Ephraim
provoked him to anger most bitterly: therefore shall he leave his blood upon him, and his reproach shall his Lord return unto him.
Ephraim has
provoked bitter anger, so his Lord will leave his bloodguilt upon him and repay him
for his contempt.
And now they sin more and more, and have made them
molten images of their silver, and idols according to their own understanding, all of it the work of the
craftsmen: they say of them, Let the men that sacrifice
kiss the
calves.
Now they sin more and more and make
for themselves cast images, idols
skillfully made from their silver, all of them the work of
craftsmen. People say of them, “They offer human sacrifice and
kiss the
calves!”
Yet I am the LORD thy God from the land of Egypt, and thou shalt know no god but me: for there is no saviour beside me.
Yet I am the LORD your God ever since the land of Egypt; you know no God but Me,
for there is no
Savior besides Me.
According to their pasture, so were they filled; they were filled, and their heart was
exalted; therefore have they
forgotten me.
When they had pasture, they became satisfied; when they were satisfied, their hearts became proud, and as a result they
forgot Me.
The sorrows of a
travailing woman shall come upon him: he is an unwise son;
for he should not stay long in the place of the breaking
forth of children.
Labor pains come upon him, but he is an unwise son. When the time arrives, he fails to present himself at the opening of the
womb.
Samaria shall become
desolate;
for she hath rebelled against her God: they shall fall by the sword: their infants shall be
dashed in pieces, and their women with child shall be
ripped up.
Samaria will bear her guilt because she has rebelled against her God. They will fall by the sword; their little ones will be
dashed to pieces, and their
pregnant women
ripped open.
O Israel, return unto the LORD thy God; for thou hast fallen by thine iniquity.
Return, O Israel, to the LORD your God,
for you have
stumbled by your iniquity.
Asshur shall not save us; we will not
ride upon horses: neither will we say any more to the work of our hands, Ye are our gods:
for in thee the fatherless findeth mercy.
Assyria will not save us, nor will we
ride on horses. We will never again say, ‘Our gods!’ to the work of our own hands.
For in You the fatherless find
compassion.”
I will
heal their
backsliding, I will love them freely:
for mine anger is turned away from him.
I will
heal their
apostasy; I will freely love them,
for My anger has turned away from them.
I will be as the
dew unto Israel: he shall grow as the
lily, and cast
forth his roots as
Lebanon.
I will be like the
dew to Israel; he will
blossom like the
lily and take root like the cedars of
Lebanon.
Who is wise, and he shall understand these things?
prudent, and he shall know them?
for the ways of the LORD are right, and the just shall walk in them: but the transgressors shall fall therein.
Awake, ye drunkards, and
weep; and
howl, all ye drinkers of wine, because of the new wine;
for it is cut off from your mouth.
Wake up, you drunkards, and
weep;
wail, all you drinkers of wine, because of the sweet wine,
for it has been cut off from your mouth.
For a nation is come up upon my land, strong, and without number, whose teeth are the teeth of a lion, and he hath the
cheek teeth of a great lion.
For a nation has invaded My land, powerful and without number; its teeth are the teeth of a lion, and its fangs are the fangs of a
lioness.
The field is wasted, the land mourneth; for the corn is wasted: the new wine is dried up, the oil languisheth.
The field is ruined; the land mourns. For the grain is destroyed, the new wine is dried up, and the oil fails.
Be ye
ashamed, O ye
husbandmen;
howl, O ye vinedressers,
for the wheat and
for the barley; because the harvest of the field is perished.
Be dismayed, O farmers,
wail, O vinedressers, over the wheat and barley, because the harvest of the field has perished.
Gird yourselves, and
lament, ye priests:
howl, ye ministers of the altar: come, lie all night in
sackcloth, ye ministers of my God:
for the meat offering and the drink offering is
withholden from the house of your God.
Put on
sackcloth and
lament, O priests;
wail, O ministers of the altar. Come,
spend the night in
sackcloth, O ministers of my God, because the grain and drink offerings are
withheld from the house of your God.
Alas for the day!
for the day of the LORD is at hand, and as a destruction from the
Almighty shall it come.
Alas for the day!
For the Day of the LORD is near, and it will come as destruction from the
Almighty.
The seed is
rotten under their clods, the garners are laid
desolate, the barns are broken down;
for the corn is
withered.
The seeds lie
shriveled beneath the clods; the storehouses are in ruins; the
granaries are broken down,
for the grain has
withered away.
O LORD, to thee will I cry:
for the fire hath
devoured the pastures of the wilderness, and the flame hath burned all the trees of the field.
To You, O LORD, I call,
for fire has consumed the open pastures and flames have
scorched all the trees of the field.
The beasts of the field cry also unto thee:
for the rivers of waters are dried up, and the fire hath
devoured the pastures of the wilderness.
Even the beasts of the field
pant for You,
for the streams of water have dried up, and fire has consumed the open pastures.
Blow ye the
trumpet in
Zion, and sound an
alarm in my holy mountain: let all the inhabitants of the land
tremble:
for the day of the LORD cometh,
for it is
nigh at hand;
Blow the ram’s horn in
Zion; sound the
alarm on My holy mountain! Let all who dwell in the land
tremble,
for the Day of the LORD is coming; indeed, it is near—
Like the noise of
chariots on the tops of mountains shall they
leap, like the noise of a flame of fire that devoureth the
stubble, as a strong people set in battle
array.
They shall run like mighty men; they shall
climb the wall like men of war; and they shall march every one on his ways, and they shall not break their ranks:
They charge like mighty men; they scale the walls like men of war. Each one marches in
formation, not
swerving from the course.
And the LORD shall utter his voice before his army:
for his camp is very great:
for he is strong that executeth his word:
for the day of the LORD is great and very terrible; and who can
abide it?
The LORD raises His voice in the presence of His army. Indeed, His camp is very large,
for mighty are those who obey His command.
For the Day of the LORD is great and very
dreadful. Who can
endure it?
And
rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the LORD your God:
for he is
gracious and
merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the evil.
So
rend your hearts and not your garments, and return to the LORD your God.
For He is
gracious and
compassionate, slow to anger, abounding in loving devotion. And He relents from sending
disaster.
Who knoweth if he will return and
repent, and leave a blessing behind him; even a meat offering and a drink offering unto the LORD your God?
Who knows? He may turn and relent and leave a blessing behind Him— grain and drink offerings for the LORD your God.
Then will the LORD be
jealous for his land, and
pity his people.
Then the LORD became
jealous for His land, and He
spared His people.
But I will remove far off from you the northern army, and will drive him into a land barren and
desolate, with his face toward the east sea, and his hinder part toward the utmost sea, and his
stink shall come up, and his ill savour shall come up, because he hath done great things.
The northern army I will drive away from you,
banishing it to a barren and
desolate land, its front ranks into the Eastern Sea, and its rear guard into the Western Sea. And its
stench will rise; its foul
odor will
ascend.
For He has done great things.
Fear not, O land; be
glad and
rejoice:
for the LORD will do great things.
Do not be afraid, O land;
rejoice and be
glad,
for the LORD has done great things.
Be not afraid, ye beasts of the field: for the pastures of the wilderness do spring, for the tree beareth her fruit, the fig tree and the vine do yield their strength.
Do not be afraid, O beasts of the field, for the open pastures have turned green, the trees bear their fruit, and the fig tree and vine yield their best.
Be
glad then, ye children of
Zion, and
rejoice in the LORD your God:
for he hath given you the
former rain moderately, and he will cause to come down
for you the rain, the
former rain, and the latter rain in the first month.
Be
glad, O children of
Zion, and
rejoice in the LORD your God,
for He has given you the autumn rains
for your
vindication. He sends you showers, both autumn and spring rains, as before.
And I will restore to you the years that the
locust hath eaten, the
cankerworm, and the caterpiller, and the
palmerworm, my great army which I sent among you.
And ye shall eat in
plenty, and be satisfied, and praise the name of the LORD your God, that hath dealt
wondrously with you: and my people shall never be
ashamed.
You will have
plenty to eat, until you are satisfied. You will praise the name of the LORD your God, who has worked wonders
for you. My people will never again be put to shame.
And it shall come to pass, that
whosoever shall call on the name of the LORD shall be delivered:
for in mount
Zion and in Jerusalem shall be
deliverance, as the LORD hath said, and in the
remnant whom the LORD shall call.
And
everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved;
for on Mount
Zion and in Jerusalem there will be
deliverance, as the LORD has promised, among the
remnant called by the LORD.
For, behold, in those days, and in that time, when I shall bring again the captivity of Judah and Jerusalem,
“
Yes, in those days and at that time, when I restore Judah and Jerusalem from captivity,
I will also gather all nations, and will bring them down into the valley of
Jehoshaphat, and will
plead with them there
for my people and
for my
heritage Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations, and parted my land.
I will gather all the nations and bring them down to the Valley of
Jehoshaphat. There I will enter into judgment against them concerning My people, My inheritance, Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations as they divided up My land.
And they have cast lots
for my people; and have given a boy
for an
harlot, and sold a
girl for wine, that they might drink.
Because ye have taken my silver and my gold, and have carried into your temples my goodly pleasant things:
For you took My silver and gold and carried off My finest treasures to your temples.
And I will sell your sons and your daughters into the hand of the children of Judah, and they shall sell them to the
Sabeans, to a people far off:
for the LORD hath spoken it.
I will sell your sons and daughters into the hands of the people of Judah, and they will sell them to the
Sabeans—to a distant nation.” Indeed, the LORD has spoken.
Proclaim ye this among the Gentiles; Prepare war,
wake up the mighty men, let all the men of war draw near; let them come up:
Proclaim this among the nations: “Prepare
for war;
rouse the mighty men; let all the men of war advance and attack!
Let the heathen be
wakened, and come up to the valley of
Jehoshaphat:
for there will I sit to judge all the heathen round about.
Let the nations be
roused and advance to the Valley of
Jehoshaphat,
for there I will sit down to judge all the nations on every side.
Put ye in the
sickle,
for the harvest is ripe: come, get you down;
for the press is full, the fats overflow;
for their wickedness is great.
Swing the
sickle,
for the harvest is ripe. Come,
trample the grapes,
for the winepress is full; the wine vats overflow because their wickedness is great.
Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision: for the day of the LORD is near in the valley of decision.
Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision! For the Day of the LORD is near in the valley of decision.
The LORD also shall
roar out of
Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the heavens and the earth shall
shake: but the LORD will be the hope of his people, and the strength of the children of Israel.
The LORD will
roar from
Zion and raise His voice from Jerusalem; heaven and earth will
tremble. But the LORD will be a refuge
for His people, a
stronghold for the people of Israel.
So shall ye know that I am the LORD your God dwelling in
Zion, my holy mountain: then shall Jerusalem be holy, and there shall no strangers pass through her any more.
Then you will know that I am the LORD your God, who dwells in
Zion, My holy mountain. Jerusalem will be holy, never again to be overrun by
foreigners.
And it shall come to pass in that day, that the mountains shall drop down new wine, and the hills shall flow with milk, and all the rivers of Judah shall flow with waters, and a fountain shall come
forth of the house of the LORD, and shall water the valley of
Shittim.
And in that day the mountains will
drip with sweet wine, and the hills will flow with milk. All the streams of Judah will run with water, and a spring will flow from the house of the LORD to water the Valley of
Acacias.
Egypt shall be a
desolation, and
Edom shall be a
desolate wilderness,
for the violence against the children of Judah, because they have shed innocent blood in their land.
Egypt will become
desolate, and
Edom a desert wasteland, because of the violence done to the people of Judah, in whose land they shed innocent blood.
But Judah shall dwell for ever, and Jerusalem from generation to generation.
But Judah will be inhabited
forever, and Jerusalem from generation to generation.
For I will
avenge their blood, which I have not yet
avenged.”
For the LORD dwells in
Zion.
Thus saith the LORD;
For three transgressions of Damascus, and
for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they have
threshed Gilead with
threshing instruments of iron:
This is what the LORD says: “
For three transgressions of Damascus, even four, I will not
revoke My judgment, because they
threshed Gilead with sledges of iron.
Thus saith the LORD;
For three transgressions of
Gaza, and
for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they carried away
captive the whole captivity, to deliver them up to
Edom:
This is what the LORD says: “
For three transgressions of
Gaza, even four, I will not
revoke My judgment, because they exiled a whole population, delivering them up to
Edom.
Thus saith the LORD;
For three transgressions of Tyrus, and
for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they delivered up the whole captivity to
Edom, and remembered not the brotherly covenant:
This is what the LORD says: “
For three transgressions of Tyre, even four, I will not
revoke My judgment, because they delivered up a whole congregation of exiles to
Edom and broke a covenant of
brotherhood.
Thus saith the LORD;
For three transgressions of
Edom, and
for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because he did pursue his brother with the sword, and did cast off all
pity, and his anger did
tear perpetually, and he kept his wrath
for ever:
This is what the LORD says: “
For three transgressions of
Edom, even four, I will not
revoke My judgment, because he pursued his brother with the sword and
stifled all
compassion; his anger
raged continually, and his
fury flamed
incessantly.
Thus saith the LORD;
For three transgressions of the children of
Ammon, and
for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they have
ripped up the women with child of
Gilead, that they might
enlarge their border:
Thus saith the LORD;
For three transgressions of Moab, and
for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because he burned the bones of the king of
Edom into lime:
This is what the LORD says: “
For three transgressions of Moab, even four, I will not
revoke My judgment, because he burned to lime the bones of
Edom’s king.
Thus saith the LORD;
For three transgressions of Judah, and
for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they have
despised the law of the LORD, and have not kept his commandments, and their lies caused them to
err, after the which their fathers have walked:
This is what the LORD says: “
For three transgressions of Judah, even four, I will not
revoke My judgment, because they
reject the Law of the LORD and fail to keep His statutes; they are led
astray by the lies in which their fathers walked.
Thus saith the LORD;
For three transgressions of Israel, and
for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they sold the righteous
for silver, and the poor
for a pair of
shoes;
This is what the LORD says: “
For three transgressions of Israel, even four, I will not
revoke My judgment, because they sell the righteous
for silver and the
needy for a pair of
sandals.
Also I brought you up from the land of Egypt, and led you forty years through the wilderness, to possess the land of the Amorite.
And I brought you up from the land of Egypt and led you forty years in the wilderness, that you might take possession of the land of the Amorite.
And I raised up of your sons
for prophets, and of your young men
for Nazarites. Is it not even thus, O ye children of Israel? saith the LORD.
I raised up prophets from your sons and Nazirites from your young men. Is this not true, O children of Israel?” declares the LORD.
Therefore the flight shall perish from the swift, and the strong shall not
strengthen his
force, neither shall the mighty deliver himself:
Escape will fail the swift, the strong will not prevail by his strength, and the mighty will not save his life.
You only have I known of all the families of the earth: therefore I will
punish you
for all your
iniquities.
“Only you have I known from all the families of the earth; therefore I will
punish you
for all your
iniquities.”
Will a lion
roar in the
forest, when he hath no prey? will a young lion cry out of his den, if he have taken nothing?
Does a lion
roar in the
forest when he has no prey? Does a young lion
growl in his den if he has caught nothing?
Can a bird fall in a
snare upon the earth, where no
gin is
for him? shall one take up a
snare from the earth, and have taken nothing at all?
Does a bird land in a
snare where no
bait has been set? Does a
trap spring from the ground when it has nothing to catch?
For they know not to do right, saith the LORD, who store up violence and
robbery in their palaces.
“For they know not how to do right,” declares the LORD. “They store up violence and destruction in their citadels.”
That in the day that I shall visit the transgressions of Israel upon him I will also visit the altars of
Bethel: and the horns of the altar shall be cut off, and fall to the ground.
On the day I
punish Israel
for their transgressions, I will visit destruction on the altars of
Bethel; the horns of the altar will be cut off, and they will fall to the ground.
Offer
leavened bread as a
thank offering, and loudly
proclaim your
freewill offerings.
For that is what you children of Israel love to do,” declares the Lord GOD.
So two or three cities
wandered unto one city, to drink water; but they were not satisfied: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the LORD.
People
staggered from city to city
for water to drink, but they were not satisfied; yet you did not return to Me,” declares the LORD.
For, lo, he that formeth the mountains, and createth the wind, and declareth unto man what is his thought, that maketh the morning darkness, and treadeth upon the high places of the earth, The LORD, The God of hosts, is his name.
For behold, He who
forms the mountains, who creates the wind and reveals His thoughts to man, who turns the
dawn to darkness and strides on the heights of the earth— the LORD, the God of Hosts, is His name.”
The virgin of Israel is fallen; she shall no more rise: she is
forsaken upon her land; there is none to raise her up.
“Fallen is Virgin Israel, never to rise again. She lies abandoned on her land, with no one to raise her up.”
For thus saith the Lord GOD; The city that went out by a thousand shall leave an hundred, and that which went forth by an hundred shall leave ten, to the house of Israel.
This is what the Lord GOD says: “The city that marches out a thousand strong will only see a hundred return, and the one that marches out a hundred strong will have but ten left in the house of Israel.”
For thus saith the LORD unto the house of Israel, Seek ye me, and ye shall live:
For this is what the LORD says to the house of Israel: “Seek Me and live!
Seek him that maketh the seven stars and
Orion, and turneth the shadow of death into the morning, and maketh the day dark with night: that calleth
for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth: The LORD is his name:
He who made the
Pleiades and
Orion, who turns darkness into
dawn and darkens day into night, who
summons the waters of the sea and pours them over the face of the earth— the LORD is His name—
That strengtheneth the
spoiled against the strong, so that the
spoiled shall come against the
fortress.
Forasmuch therefore as your
treading is upon the poor, and ye take from him burdens of wheat: ye have built houses of
hewn stone, but ye shall not dwell in them; ye have planted pleasant vineyards, but ye shall not drink wine of them.
Therefore, because you
trample on the poor and exact from him a tax of grain, you will never live in the stone houses you have built; you will never drink the wine from the
lush vineyards you have planted.
For I know your
manifold transgressions and your mighty sins: they
afflict the just, they take a
bribe, and they turn aside the poor in the gate from their right.
For I know that your transgressions are many and your sins are numerous. You
oppress the righteous by taking bribes; you deprive the poor of justice in the gate.
Therefore the
prudent shall keep silence in that time;
for it is an evil time.
Therefore, the
prudent keep silent in such times,
for the days are evil.
And in all vineyards shall be
wailing:
for I will pass through thee, saith the LORD.
There will be
wailing in all the vineyards,
for I will pass through your midst,” says the LORD.
Woe unto you that desire the day of the LORD! to what end is it
for you? the day of the LORD is darkness, and not light.
Woe to you who long
for the Day of the LORD! What will the Day of the LORD be
for you? It will be darkness and not light.
Though ye offer me burnt offerings and your meat offerings, I will not accept them: neither will I regard the peace offerings of your fat beasts.
Even though you offer Me burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them;
for your peace offerings of
fattened cattle I will have no regard.
Take thou away from me the noise of thy songs;
for I will not hear the
melody of thy viols.
Take away from Me the noise of your songs! I will not
listen to the music of your harps.
Have ye offered unto me sacrifices and offerings in the wilderness forty years, O house of Israel?
Did you bring Me sacrifices and offerings forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel?
But ye have borne the tabernacle of your
Moloch and Chiun your images, the star of your god, which ye made to
yourselves.
You have taken along Sakkuth your king and Kaiwan your star god, the idols you made
for yourselves.
Woe to them that are at ease in
Zion, and trust in the mountain of Samaria, which are named chief of the nations, to whom the house of Israel came!
Woe to those at ease in
Zion and those secure on Mount Samaria, the distinguished ones of the
foremost nation, to whom the house of Israel comes.
You drink wine by the bowlful and
anoint yourselves with the finest oils, but you fail to
grieve over the ruin of Joseph.
And a man’s uncle shall take him up, and he that burneth him, to bring out the bones out of the house, and shall say unto him that is by the sides of the house, Is there yet any with thee? and he shall say, No. Then shall he say, Hold thy tongue: for we may not make mention of the name of the LORD.
And when the relative who is to burn the bodies picks them up to remove them from the house, he will call to one inside, “Is
anyone else with you?” “None,” that person will answer. “Silence,” the relative will
retort, “
for the name of the LORD must not be
invoked.”
For, behold, the LORD commandeth, and he will
smite the great house with breaches, and the little house with clefts.
For the LORD gives a command: “The great house will be
smashed to pieces, and the small house to
rubble.”
Shall horses run upon the rock? will one
plow there with oxen?
for ye have turned judgment into gall, and the fruit of righteousness into
hemlock:
“Do horses
gallop on the cliffs? Does one
plow the sea with oxen? But you have turned justice into poison and the fruit of righteousness into
wormwood—
But, behold, I will raise up against you a nation, O house of Israel, saith the LORD the God of hosts; and they shall
afflict you from the entering in of Hemath unto the river of the wilderness.
For behold, I will raise up a nation against you, O house of Israel,” declares the LORD, the God of Hosts, “and they will
oppress you from Lebo-
hamath to the
Brook of the Arabah.”
Thus hath the Lord GOD shewed unto me; and, behold, he formed grasshoppers in the beginning of the shooting up of the latter growth; and, lo, it was the latter growth after the king’s mowings.
This is what the Lord GOD showed me: He was preparing swarms of locusts just after the king’s harvest, as the late spring crop was coming up.
And it came to pass, that when they had made an end of eating the grass of the land, then I said, O Lord GOD,
forgive, I
beseech thee: by whom shall Jacob arise?
for he is small.
And when the locusts had eaten every green plant in the land, I said, “Lord GOD, please
forgive! How will Jacob
survive, since he is so small?”
The LORD
repented for this: It shall not be, saith the LORD.
So the LORD relented from this plan. “It will not happen,” He said.
Thus hath the Lord GOD shewed unto me: and, behold, the Lord GOD called to
contend by fire, and it
devoured the great deep, and did eat up a part.
This is what the Lord GOD showed me: The Lord GOD was calling
for judgment by fire. It consumed the great deep and
devoured the land.
Then said I, O Lord GOD, cease, I
beseech thee: by whom shall Jacob arise?
for he is small.
Then I said, “Lord GOD, please stop! How will Jacob
survive, since he is so small?”
The LORD
repented for this: This also shall not be, saith the Lord GOD.
So the LORD relented from this plan. “It will not happen either,” said the Lord GOD.
For thus
Amos saith,
Jeroboam shall die by the sword, and Israel shall surely be led away
captive out of their own land.
for this is what
Amos has said: ‘
Jeroboam will die by the sword, and Israel will surely go into exile, away from their homeland.’”
But
prophesy not again any more at
Bethel:
for it is the king’s chapel, and it is the king’s court.
But never
prophesy at
Bethel again, because it is the sanctuary of the king and the temple of the kingdom.”
Therefore thus saith the LORD; Thy wife shall be an
harlot in the city, and thy sons and thy daughters shall fall by the sword, and thy land shall be divided by line; and thou shalt die in a
polluted land: and Israel shall surely go into captivity
forth of his land.
Therefore this is what the LORD says: ‘Your wife will become a
prostitute in the city, and your sons and daughters will fall by the sword. Your land will be divided by a measuring line, and you
yourself will die on pagan soil. And Israel will surely go into exile, away from their homeland.’”
