The meat offering and the drink offering is cut off
from the house of the LORD; the priests, the LORD’S ministers,
mourn.
Grain and drink offerings have been cut off
from the house of the LORD; the priests are in
mourning, those who minister before the LORD.
The vine is dried up, and the fig tree languisheth; the
pomegranate tree, the palm tree also, and the apple tree, even all the trees of the field, are
withered: because joy is
withered away
from the sons of men.
Gird yourselves, and
lament, ye priests:
howl, ye ministers of the altar: come, lie all night in
sackcloth, ye ministers of my God: for the meat offering and the drink offering is
withholden from the house of your God.
Put on
sackcloth and
lament, O priests;
wail, O ministers of the altar. Come,
spend the night in
sackcloth, O ministers of my God, because the grain and drink offerings are
withheld from the house of your God.
Alas for the day! for the day of the LORD is at hand, and as a destruction
from the
Almighty shall it come.
Alas for the day! For the Day of the LORD is near, and it will come as destruction
from the
Almighty.
Is not the meat cut off before our eyes,
yea, joy and
gladness from the house of our God?
Has not the food been cut off before our very eyes— joy and
gladness from the house of our God?
They shall run like mighty men; they shall
climb the wall like men of war; and they shall march every one on his ways, and they shall not break their ranks:
They charge like mighty men; they scale the walls like men of war. Each one marches in formation, not
swerving from the course.
And
rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the LORD your God: for he is
gracious and
merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the evil.
So
rend your hearts and not your garments, and return to the LORD your God. For He is
gracious and
compassionate, slow to anger, abounding in loving devotion. And He relents
from sending
disaster.
But I will remove far off
from you the northern army, and will drive him into a land barren and
desolate, with his face toward the east sea, and his hinder part toward the utmost sea, and his
stink shall come up, and his ill savour shall come up, because he hath done great things.
The northern army I will drive away
from you,
banishing it to a barren and
desolate land, its front ranks into the Eastern Sea, and its rear guard into the Western Sea. And its
stench will rise; its foul
odor will
ascend. For He has done great things.
For, behold, in those days, and in that time, when I shall bring again the captivity of Judah and Jerusalem,
“
Yes, in those days and at that time, when I restore Judah and Jerusalem
from captivity,
The children also of Judah and the children of Jerusalem have ye sold unto the Grecians, that ye might remove them far from their border.
You sold the people of Judah and Jerusalem to the Greeks, to send them far from their homeland.
Behold, I will raise them out of the place
whither ye have sold them, and will return your recompence upon your own head:
Behold, I will
rouse them
from the places to which you sold them; I will return your
recompense upon your heads.
The LORD also shall
roar out of
Zion, and utter his voice
from Jerusalem; and the heavens and the earth shall
shake: but the LORD will be the hope of his people, and the strength of the children of Israel.
The LORD will
roar from Zion and raise His voice
from Jerusalem; heaven and earth will
tremble. But the LORD will be a refuge for His people, a
stronghold for the people of Israel.
And it shall come to pass in that day, that the mountains shall drop down new wine, and the hills shall flow with milk, and all the rivers of Judah shall flow with waters, and a fountain shall come forth of the house of the LORD, and shall water the valley of
Shittim.
And in that day the mountains will
drip with sweet wine, and the hills will flow with milk. All the streams of Judah will run with water, and a spring will flow
from the house of the LORD to water the Valley of
Acacias.
But Judah shall dwell for ever, and Jerusalem from generation to generation.
But Judah will be inhabited
forever, and Jerusalem
from generation to generation.
And he said, The LORD will
roar from Zion, and utter his voice
from Jerusalem; and the habitations of the
shepherds shall
mourn, and the top of
Carmel shall wither.
I will break also the bar of Damascus, and cut off the inhabitant
from the plain of
Aven, and him that holdeth the
sceptre from the house of
Eden: and the people of Syria shall go into captivity unto Kir, saith the LORD.
I will break down the gates of Damascus; I will cut off the ruler of the Valley of
Aven and the one who wields the
scepter in Beth-
eden. The people of
Aram will be exiled to Kir,” says the LORD.
And I will cut off the inhabitant
from Ashdod, and him that holdeth the
sceptre from Ashkelon, and I will turn mine hand against
Ekron: and the
remnant of the Philistines shall perish, saith the Lord GOD.
I will cut off the ruler of
Ashdod and the one who wields the
scepter in Ashkelon. I will turn My hand against
Ekron, and the
remnant of the Philistines will perish,” says the Lord GOD.
And I will cut off the judge
from the midst thereof, and will
slay all the princes thereof with him, saith the LORD.
I will cut off the ruler of Moab and kill all the officials with him,” says the LORD.
Yet destroyed I the Amorite before them, whose height was like the height of the cedars, and he was strong as the oaks; yet I destroyed his fruit from above, and his roots from beneath.
Yet it was I who destroyed the Amorite before them, though his height was like that of the cedars, and he was as strong as the oaks. Yet I destroyed his fruit above and his roots below.
Also I brought you up from the land of Egypt, and led you forty years through the wilderness, to possess the land of the Amorite.
And I brought you up from the land of Egypt and led you forty years in the wilderness, that you might take possession of the land of the Amorite.
And I raised up of your sons for prophets, and of your young men for
Nazarites. Is it not even thus, O ye children of Israel? saith the LORD.
I raised up prophets from your sons and Nazirites from your young men. Is this not true, O children of Israel?” declares the LORD.
Therefore the flight shall perish
from the swift, and the strong shall not
strengthen his force, neither shall the mighty deliver himself:
Escape will fail the swift, the strong will not prevail by his strength, and the mighty will not save his life.
Hear this word that the LORD hath spoken against you, O children of Israel, against the whole family which I brought up from the land of Egypt, saying,
Hear this word that the LORD has spoken against you, O children of Israel, against the whole family that I brought up out of the land of Egypt:
You only have I known of all the families of the earth: therefore I will
punish you for all your
iniquities.
“Only you have I known
from all the families of the earth; therefore I will
punish you for all your
iniquities.”
Can a bird fall in a
snare upon the earth, where no
gin is for him? shall one take up a
snare from the earth, and have taken nothing at all?
Does a bird land in a
snare where no
bait has been set? Does a
trap spring
from the ground when it has nothing to catch?
Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; An
adversary there shall be even round about the land; and he shall bring down thy strength
from thee, and thy palaces shall be
spoiled.
Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: “An enemy will
surround the land; he will pull down your strongholds and
plunder your citadels.”
Thus saith the LORD; As the
shepherd taketh out of the mouth of the lion two legs, or a piece of an ear; so shall the children of Israel be taken out that dwell in Samaria in the corner of a bed, and in Damascus in a
couch.
This is what the LORD says: “As the
shepherd snatches
from the mouth of the lion two legs or a piece of an ear, so the Israelites dwelling in Samaria will be
rescued having just the corner of a bed or the
cushion of a
couch.
And also I have
withholden the rain
from you, when there were yet three months to the harvest: and I caused it to rain upon one city, and caused it not to rain upon another city: one piece was rained upon, and the piece
whereupon it rained not
withered.
“I also
withheld the rain
from you when the harvest was three months away. I sent rain on one city but
withheld it
from another. One field received rain; another without rain
withered.
So two or three cities
wandered unto one city, to drink water; but they were not satisfied: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the LORD.
People
staggered from city to city for water to drink, but they were not satisfied; yet you did not return to Me,” declares the LORD.
I have overthrown some of you, as God overthrew
Sodom and
Gomorrah, and ye were as a
firebrand plucked out of the burning: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the LORD.
Forasmuch therefore as your
treading is upon the poor, and ye take
from him burdens of wheat: ye have built houses of
hewn stone, but ye shall not dwell in them; ye have planted pleasant vineyards, but ye shall not drink wine of them.
Therefore, because you
trample on the poor and exact
from him a tax of grain, you will never live in the stone houses you have built; you will never drink the wine
from the
lush vineyards you have planted.
For I know your
manifold transgressions and your mighty sins: they
afflict the just, they take a
bribe, and they turn aside the poor in the gate
from their right.
For I know that your transgressions are many and your sins are numerous. You
oppress the righteous by taking bribes; you deprive the poor of justice in the gate.
As if a man did
flee from a lion, and a bear met him; or went into the house, and
leaned his hand on the wall, and a serpent
bit him.
It will be like a man who flees
from a lion, only to
encounter a bear, or who enters his house and rests his hand against the wall, only to be
bitten by a
snake.
Take thou away
from me the noise of thy songs; for I will not hear the
melody of thy viols.
Take away
from Me the noise of your songs! I will not
listen to the music of your harps.
Pass ye unto
Calneh, and see; and
from thence go ye to
Hamath the great: then go down to
Gath of the Philistines: be they better than these kingdoms? or their border greater than your border?
Cross over to
Calneh and see; go
from there to the great
Hamath; then go down to
Gath of the Philistines. Are you better than these kingdoms? Is their territory larger than yours?
That lie upon beds of ivory, and stretch themselves upon their couches, and eat the lambs out of the flock, and the
calves out of the midst of the
stall;
You lie on beds inlaid with ivory, and
lounge upon your couches. You
dine on lambs
from the flock and
calves from the
stall.
And a man’s uncle shall take him up, and he that burneth him, to bring out the bones out of the house, and shall say unto him that is by the sides of the house, Is there yet any with thee? and he shall say, No. Then shall he say, Hold thy tongue: for we may not make mention of the name of the LORD.
And when the relative who is to burn the bodies picks them up to remove them
from the house, he will call to one inside, “Is
anyone else with you?” “None,” that person will answer. “Silence,” the relative will
retort, “for the name of the LORD must not be
invoked.”
But, behold, I will raise up against you a nation, O house of Israel, saith the LORD the God of hosts; and they shall
afflict you
from the entering in of Hemath unto the river of the wilderness.
For behold, I will raise up a nation against you, O house of Israel,” declares the LORD, the God of Hosts, “and they will
oppress you
from Lebo-
hamath to the
Brook of the Arabah.”
The LORD
repented for this: It shall not be, saith the LORD.
So the LORD relented from this plan. “It will not happen,” He said.
The LORD
repented for this: This also shall not be, saith the Lord GOD.
So the LORD relented from this plan. “It will not happen either,” said the Lord GOD.
For thus
Amos saith,
Jeroboam shall die by the sword, and Israel shall surely be led away
captive out of their own land.
for this is what
Amos has said: ‘
Jeroboam will die by the sword, and Israel will surely go into exile, away
from their homeland.’”
And the LORD took me as I followed the flock, and the LORD said unto me, Go,
prophesy unto my people Israel.
But the LORD took me
from following the flock and said to me, ‘Go,
prophesy to My people Israel.’
Therefore thus saith the LORD; Thy wife shall be an
harlot in the city, and thy sons and thy daughters shall fall by the sword, and thy land shall be divided by line; and thou shalt die in a
polluted land: and Israel shall surely go into captivity forth of his land.
Therefore this is what the LORD says: ‘Your wife will become a
prostitute in the city, and your sons and daughters will fall by the sword. Your land will be divided by a measuring line, and you
yourself will die on pagan soil. And Israel will surely go into exile, away
from their homeland.’”
And they shall
wander from sea to sea, and
from the north even to the east, they shall run to and
fro to seek the word of the LORD, and shall not find it.
People will
stagger from sea to sea and
roam from north to east, seeking the word of the LORD, but they will not find it.
In that day shall the fair virgins and young men
faint for
thirst.
In that day the lovely young women— the young men as well— will
faint from thirst.
Though they
dig into
hell, thence shall mine hand take them; though they
climb up to heaven, thence will I bring them down:
Though they
dig down to
Sheol,
from there My hand will take them; and though they
climb up to heaven,
from there I will pull them down.
And though they hide themselves in the top of
Carmel, I will search and take them out thence; and though they be
hid from my sight in the bottom of the sea, thence will I command the serpent, and he shall
bite them:
Though they hide themselves
atop Carmel, there I will
track them and seize them; and though they hide
from Me at the bottom of the sea, there I will command the serpent to
bite them.
Are ye not as children of the Ethiopians unto me, O children of Israel? saith the LORD. Have not I brought up Israel out of the land of Egypt? and the Philistines from Caphtor, and the Syrians from Kir?
“Are you not like the Cushites to Me, O children of Israel?” declares the LORD. “Did I not bring Israel up from the land of Egypt, the Philistines from Caphtor, and the Arameans from Kir?
Behold, the eyes of the Lord GOD are upon the sinful kingdom, and I will destroy it from off the face of the earth; saving that I will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob, saith the LORD.
Surely the eyes of the Lord GOD are on the sinful kingdom, and I will destroy it from the face of the earth. Yet I will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob,” declares the LORD.
And I will bring again the captivity of my people of Israel, and they shall build the waste cities, and inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards, and drink the wine thereof; they shall also make gardens, and eat the fruit of them.
I will restore My people Israel from captivity; they will rebuild and inhabit the ruined cities. They will plant vineyards and drink their wine; they will make gardens and eat their fruit.
And I will plant them upon their land, and they shall no more be pulled up out of their land which I have given them, saith the LORD thy God.
I will firmly plant them in their own land, never again to be uprooted from the land that I have given them,” says the LORD your God.
The vision of
Obadiah. Thus saith the Lord GOD concerning
Edom; We have heard a rumour
from the LORD, and an ambassador is sent among the heathen, Arise ye, and let us rise up against her in battle.
This is the vision of
Obadiah: This is what the Lord GOD says about
Edom— We have heard a message
from the LORD; an
envoy has been sent among the nations to say, “Rise up, and let us go to battle against her!”—
Though thou
exalt thyself as the eagle, and though thou set thy nest among the stars, thence will I bring thee down, saith the LORD.
Though you
soar like the eagle and make your nest among the stars, even
from there I will bring you down,” declares the LORD.
And the house of Jacob shall be a fire, and the house of Joseph a flame, and the house of
Esau for
stubble, and they shall
kindle in them, and
devour them; and there shall not be any remaining of the house of
Esau; for the LORD hath spoken it.
Then the house of Jacob will be a
blazing fire, and the house of Joseph a burning flame; but the house of
Esau will be
stubble— Jacob will set it
ablaze and
consume it. Therefore no
survivor will remain
from the house of
Esau.” For the LORD has spoken.
And they of the south shall possess the mount of
Esau; and they of the plain the Philistines: and they shall possess the fields of Ephraim, and the fields of Samaria: and Benjamin shall possess
Gilead.
Those
from the Negev will possess the mountains of
Esau; those
from the foothills will possess the land of the Philistines. They will occupy the fields of Ephraim and Samaria, and Benjamin will possess
Gilead.
And the captivity of this host of the children of Israel shall possess that of the
Canaanites, even unto Zarephath; and the captivity of Jerusalem, which is in Sepharad, shall possess the cities of the south.
And the exiles of this host of the Israelites will possess the land of the
Canaanites as far as Zarephath; and the exiles
from Jerusalem who are in Sepharad will possess the cities of the Negev.
But
Jonah rose up to
flee unto
Tarshish from the presence of the LORD, and went down to
Joppa; and he found a ship going to
Tarshish: so he paid the
fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto
Tarshish from the presence of the LORD.
Then said they unto him, Tell us, we pray thee, for whose cause this evil is upon us; What is thine occupation? and whence comest thou? what is thy country? and of what people art thou?
“Tell us now,” they demanded, “who is to
blame for this
calamity that is upon us? What is your occupation, and where have you come
from? What is your country, and who are your people?”
Then were the men exceedingly afraid, and said unto him, Why hast thou done this? For the men knew that he fled from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them.
Then the men were even more afraid and said to him, “What have you done?” The men knew that he was
fleeing from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them.
So they took up
Jonah, and cast him forth into the sea: and the sea ceased
from her
raging.
At this, they
picked up
Jonah and cast him into the sea, and the
raging sea grew calm.
Then
Jonah prayed unto the LORD his God out of the fish’s
belly,
From inside the fish,
Jonah prayed to the LORD his God,
saying: “In my distress I called to the LORD, and He answered me.
From the
belly of
Sheol I called for help, and You heard my voice.
Then I said, I am cast out of thy sight; yet I will look again toward thy holy temple.
At this, I said, ‘I have been banished from Your sight; yet I will look once more toward Your holy temple.’
I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; the earth with her bars was about me for ever: yet hast thou brought up my life from corruption, O LORD my God.
To the roots of the mountains I descended; the earth beneath me
barred me in
forever! But You raised my life
from the pit, O LORD my God!
But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of
thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have
vowed. Salvation is of the LORD.
But I, with the voice of
thanksgiving, will sacrifice to You. I will
fulfill what I have
vowed. Salvation is
from the LORD!”
So the people of
Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on
sackcloth,
from the greatest of them even to the least of them.
And the Ninevites believed God. They proclaimed a fast and dressed in
sackcloth,
from the greatest of them to the least.
For word came unto the king of
Nineveh, and he arose
from his throne, and he laid his
robe from him, and covered him with
sackcloth, and sat in ashes.
When word reached the king of
Nineveh, he got up
from his throne, took off his royal
robe, covered himself with
sackcloth, and sat in ashes.
But let man and beast be covered with
sackcloth, and cry
mightily unto God:
yea, let them turn every one
from his evil way, and
from the violence that is in their hands.
Furthermore, let both man and beast be covered with
sackcloth, and have
everyone call out earnestly to God. Let each one turn
from his evil ways and
from the violence in his hands.
Who can tell if God will turn and
repent, and turn away
from his fierce anger, that we perish not?
Who knows? God may turn and relent; He may turn from His fierce anger, so that we will not perish.”
And God saw their works, that they turned
from their evil way; and God
repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not.
When God saw their actions—that they had turned
from their evil ways—He relented
from the
disaster He had threatened to bring upon them.
And he prayed unto the LORD, and said, I pray thee, O LORD, was not this my saying, when I was yet in my country? Therefore I fled before unto
Tarshish: for I knew that thou art a
gracious God, and
merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repentest thee of the evil.
So he prayed to the LORD, saying, “O LORD, is this not what I said while I was still in my own country? This is why I was so quick to
flee toward
Tarshish. I knew that You are a
gracious and
compassionate God, slow to anger, abounding in loving devotion—One who relents
from sending
disaster.
Therefore now, O LORD, take, I
beseech thee, my life
from me; for it is better for me to die than to live.
And now, O LORD, please take my life from me, for it is better for me to die than to live.”
And the LORD God prepared a
gourd, and made it to come up over
Jonah, that it might be a shadow over his head, to deliver him
from his grief. So
Jonah was exceeding
glad of the
gourd.
So the LORD God appointed a vine, and it grew up to provide shade over
Jonah’s head to ease his discomfort, and
Jonah was greatly pleased with the plant.
And should not I
spare Nineveh, that great city, wherein are more than
sixscore thousand persons that cannot
discern between their right hand and their left hand; and also much cattle?
So should I not care about the great city of
Nineveh, which has more than 120,000 people who cannot tell their right hand
from their left, and many cattle as well?”
Hear, all ye people;
hearken, O earth, and all that therein is: and let the Lord GOD be witness against you, the Lord
from his holy temple.
Hear, O peoples, all of you;
listen, O earth, and
everyone in it! May the Lord GOD bear witness against you, the Lord
from His holy temple.
For, behold, the LORD cometh forth out of his place, and will come down, and
tread upon the high places of the earth.
For behold, the LORD comes forth
from His dwelling place; He will come down and
tread on the high places of the earth.
Pass ye away, thou inhabitant of Saphir, having thy shame naked: the inhabitant of Zaanan came not forth in the
mourning of Beth-ezel; he shall receive of you his standing.
Depart in shameful nakedness, O dwellers of Shaphir. The dwellers of Zaanan will not come out. Beth-ezel is in
mourning; its support is taken
from you.
For the inhabitant of Maroth waited carefully for good: but evil came down from the LORD unto the gate of Jerusalem.
For the dwellers of Maroth pined for good, but
calamity came down
from the LORD, even to the gate of Jerusalem.
Make thee
bald, and
poll thee for thy delicate children;
enlarge thy
baldness as the eagle; for they are gone into captivity
from thee.
Therefore thus saith the LORD; Behold, against this family do I
devise an evil,
from which ye shall not remove your necks; neither shall ye go
haughtily: for this time is evil.
Therefore this is what the LORD says: “I am
planning against this nation a
disaster from which you cannot free your necks. Then you will not walk so proudly, for it will be a time of
calamity.
In that day shall one take up a parable against you, and
lament with a
doleful lamentation, and say, We be utterly
spoiled: he hath changed the portion of my people: how hath he removed it
from me! turning away he hath divided our fields.
In that day they will take up a
proverb against you and
taunt you with this bitter
lamentation: ‘We are utterly ruined! He has changed the portion of my people. How He has removed it
from me! He has
allotted our fields to traitors.’”
Even of late my people is risen up as an enemy: ye pull off the
robe with the garment
from them that pass by securely as men
averse from war.
But of late My people have risen up like an enemy: You strip off the splendid
robe from unsuspecting passersby like men returning
from battle.
The women of my people have ye cast out from their pleasant houses; from their children have ye taken away my glory for ever.
You drive the women of My people
from their pleasant homes. You take away My blessing
from their children
forever.
Who
hate the good, and love the evil; who
pluck off their skin
from off them, and their flesh
from off their bones;
You
hate good and love evil. You
tear the skin
from my people and strip the flesh
from their bones.
Who also eat the flesh of my people, and
flay their skin
from off them; and they break their bones, and
chop them in pieces, as for the pot, and as flesh within the
caldron.
You eat the flesh of my people after
stripping off their skin and breaking their bones. You
chop them up like flesh for the
cooking pot, like meat in a cauldron.”
Then shall they cry unto the LORD, but he will not hear them: he will even hide his face
from them at that time, as they have
behaved themselves ill in their doings.
Then they will cry out to the LORD, but He will not answer them. At that time He will hide His face from them because of the evil they have done.
Then shall the seers be
ashamed, and the diviners confounded:
yea, they shall all cover their lips; for there is no answer of God.
Then the seers will be
ashamed and the diviners will be disgraced. They will all cover their mouths because there is no answer
from God.”
And many nations shall come, and say, Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, and to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for the law shall go forth of
Zion, and the word of the LORD
from Jerusalem.
And many nations will come and say: “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob. He will teach us His ways, so that we may walk in His paths.” For the law will go forth
from Zion and the word of the LORD
from Jerusalem.
And I will make her that
halted a
remnant, and her that was cast far off a strong nation: and the LORD shall reign over them in mount
Zion from henceforth, even for ever.
And I will make the
lame into a
remnant, and the outcast into a strong nation. Then the LORD will rule over them in Mount
Zion from that day and
forever.
Be in pain, and labour to bring forth, O daughter of
Zion, like a woman in
travail: for now shalt thou go forth out of the city, and thou shalt dwell in the field, and thou shalt go even to Babylon; there shalt thou be delivered; there the LORD shall
redeem thee
from the hand of thine enemies.
Writhe in
agony, O Daughter of
Zion, like a woman in labor. For now you will leave the city and camp in the open fields. You will go to Babylon; there you will be
rescued; there the LORD will
redeem you
from the hand of your enemies!
But thou,
Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been
from of old,
from everlasting.
But you,
Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come forth for Me One to be ruler over Israel— One whose origins are of old,
from the days of
eternity.
And they shall waste the land of Assyria with the sword, and the land of
Nimrod in the entrances thereof: thus shall he deliver us
from the Assyrian, when he cometh into our land, and when he treadeth within our borders.
And they will rule the land of Assyria with the sword, and the land of
Nimrod with the
blade drawn. So He will deliver us when Assyria invades our land and marches into our borders.
And the
remnant of Jacob shall be in the midst of many people as a
dew from the LORD, as the showers upon the grass, that tarrieth not for man, nor waiteth for the sons of men.
Then the
remnant of Jacob will be in the midst of many peoples like
dew from the LORD, like showers on the grass, which do not wait for man or
linger for mankind.
And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the LORD, that I will cut off thy horses out of the midst of thee, and I will destroy thy
chariots:
“In that day,” declares the LORD, “I will remove your horses
from among you and
wreck your
chariots.
And I will cut off witchcrafts out of thine hand; and thou shalt have no more soothsayers:
I will cut the
sorceries from your hand, and you will have no fortune-tellers.
Thy
graven images also will I cut off, and thy standing images out of the midst of thee; and thou shalt no more worship the work of thine hands.
I will also cut off the carved images and sacred pillars from among you, so that you will no longer bow down to the work of your own hands.
And I will
pluck up thy groves out of the midst of thee: so will I destroy thy cities.
I will root out the Asherah poles
from your midst and
demolish your cities.
For I brought thee up out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed thee out of the house of servants; and I sent before thee Moses, Aaron, and
Miriam.
