Then
Rehoboam went to
Shechem, for all Israel had gone there to make
him king.
That they sent and called
him. And
Jeroboam and all the congregation of Israel came, and spake unto
Rehoboam, saying,
So they sent for
Jeroboam, and he and the whole assembly of Israel came to
Rehoboam and said,
And they spake unto
him, saying, If thou
wilt be a servant unto this people this day, and
wilt serve them, and answer them, and speak good words to them, then they will be thy servants for ever.
They replied, “If you will be a servant to these people and serve them this day, and if you will
respond by speaking kind words to them, they will be your servants
forever.”
But he
forsook the counsel of the old men, which they had given
him, and consulted with the young men that were grown up with
him, and which stood before
him:
But
Rehoboam rejected the advice of the elders; instead, he consulted the young men who had grown up with
him and served
him.
And the young men that were grown up with him spake unto him, saying, Thus shalt thou speak unto this people that spake unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, but make thou it lighter unto us; thus shalt thou say unto them, My little finger shall be thicker than my father’s loins.
The young men who had grown up with
him replied, “This is how you should answer these people who said to you, ‘Your father made our yoke heavy, but you should make it lighter.’ This is what you should tell them: ‘My little finger is thicker than my father’s
waist!
And the king answered the people roughly, and
forsook the old men’s counsel that they gave
him;
And the king answered the people harshly. He rejected the advice of the elders
Then king
Rehoboam sent Adoram, who was over the tribute; and all Israel stoned
him with stones, that he died. Therefore king
Rehoboam made speed to get
him up to his
chariot, to
flee to Jerusalem.
Then King
Rehoboam sent out Adoram, who was in charge of the forced labor, but all Israel stoned
him to death. And King
Rehoboam mounted his
chariot in
haste and escaped to Jerusalem.
And it came to pass, when all Israel heard that
Jeroboam was come again, that they sent and called
him unto the congregation, and made
him king over all Israel: there was none that followed the house of David, but the tribe of Judah only.
When all Israel heard that
Jeroboam had returned, they summoned
him to the assembly and made
him king over all Israel. Only the tribe of Judah followed the house of David.
And it came to pass, when king
Jeroboam heard the saying of the man of God, which had
cried against the altar in
Bethel, that he put forth his hand from the altar, saying, Lay hold on
him. And his hand, which he put forth against
him, dried up, so that he could not pull it in again to
him.
Now when King
Jeroboam, who was at the altar in
Bethel, heard the word that the man of God had
cried out against it, he stretched out his hand and said, “Seize
him!” But the hand he stretched out toward
him withered, so that he could not pull it back.
And the king answered and said unto the man of God, Intreat now the face of the LORD thy God, and pray for me, that my hand may be restored me again. And the man of God
besought the LORD, and the king’s hand was restored
him again, and became as it was before.
Then the king
responded to the man of God, “
Intercede with the LORD your God and pray that my hand may be restored.” So the man of God
interceded with the LORD, and the king’s hand was restored to
him as it was before.
Now there dwelt an old prophet in
Bethel; and his sons came and told
him all the works that the man of God had done that day in
Bethel: the words which he had spoken unto the king, them they told also to their father.
Now a certain old prophet was living in
Bethel, and his sons came and told
him all the deeds that the man of God had done that day in
Bethel. They also told their father the words that the man had spoken to the king.
And their father said unto them, What way went he? For his sons had seen what way the man of God went, which came from Judah.
“Which way did he go?” their father asked. And his sons showed him the way taken by the man of God, who had come from Judah.
And went after the man of God, and found him sitting under an oak: and he said unto him, Art thou the man of God that camest from Judah? And he said, I am.
and went after the man of God. He found him sitting under an oak tree and asked, “Are you the man of God who came from Judah?” “I am,” he replied.
Then he said unto him, Come home with me, and eat bread.
So the prophet said to the man of God, “Come home with me and eat some bread.”
He said unto
him, I am a prophet also as thou art; and an angel spake unto me by the word of the LORD, saying, Bring
him back with thee into thine house, that he may eat bread and drink water. But he
lied unto
him.
Then the prophet replied, “I too am a prophet like you, and an angel spoke to me by the word of the LORD, saying, ‘Bring him back with you to your house, so that he may eat bread and drink water.’” The old prophet was lying to him,
So he went back with
him, and did eat bread in his house, and
drank water.
but the man of God went back with
him,
ate bread in his house, and
drank water.
And it came to pass, as they sat at the table, that the word of the LORD came unto the prophet that brought him back:
While they were sitting at the table, the word of the LORD came to the prophet who had brought him back,
And it came to pass, after he had eaten bread, and after he had
drunk, that he
saddled for
him the
ass, to wit, for the prophet whom he had brought back.
And after the man of God had finished eating and drinking, the old prophet who had brought
him back
saddled the
donkey for
him.
And when he was gone, a lion met
him by the way, and
slew him: and his
carcase was cast in the way, and the
ass stood by it, the lion also stood by the
carcase.
As he went on his way, a lion met
him on the road and killed
him, and his body was left lying in the road, with the
donkey and the lion standing beside it.
And when the prophet that brought
him back from the way heard thereof, he said, It is the man of God, who was
disobedient unto the word of the LORD: therefore the LORD hath delivered
him unto the lion, which hath
torn him, and slain
him, according to the word of the LORD, which he spake unto
him.
When the prophet who had brought
him back from his journey heard this, he said, “It is the man of God who disobeyed the command of the LORD. Therefore the LORD has delivered
him to the lion, and it has
mauled him and killed
him, according to the word that the LORD had spoken to
him.”
And the prophet took up the
carcase of the man of God, and laid it upon the
ass, and brought it back: and the old prophet came to the city, to
mourn and to
bury him.
So the old prophet lifted up the body of the man of God, laid it on the
donkey, and brought it back to his own city to
mourn for
him and
bury him.
And he laid his
carcase in his own grave; and they
mourned over
him, saying,
Alas, my brother!
Then he laid the body in his own tomb, and they
lamented over
him, “Oh, my brother!”
And it came to pass, after he had buried
him, that he spake to his sons, saying, When I am dead, then
bury me in the
sepulchre wherein the man of God is buried; lay my bones beside his bones:
After he had buried
him, the prophet said to his sons, “When I die, you must
bury me in the tomb where the man of God is buried. Lay my bones beside his bones,
After this thing
Jeroboam returned not from his evil way, but made again of the lowest of the people priests of the high places:
whosoever would, he consecrated
him, and he became one of the priests of the high places.
Even after these events,
Jeroboam did not
repent of his evil ways, but again he appointed priests for the high places from every class of people. He ordained
anyone who desired to be a priest of the high places.
And take with thee ten
loaves, and cracknels, and a
cruse of honey, and go to
him: he shall tell thee what shall become of the child.
Take with you ten
loaves of bread, some cakes, and a
jar of honey, and go to
him. He will tell you what will become of the boy.”
Therefore, behold, I will bring evil upon the house of
Jeroboam, and will cut off from
Jeroboam him that pisseth against the wall, and
him that is shut up and left in Israel, and will take away the
remnant of the house of
Jeroboam, as a man taketh away dung, till it be all gone.
Because of all this, behold, I am bringing
disaster on the house of
Jeroboam: I will cut off from
Jeroboam every male, both slave and free, in Israel; I will burn up the house of
Jeroboam as one burns up dung until it is gone!
Him that dieth of
Jeroboam in the city shall the dogs eat; and
him that dieth in the field shall the fowls of the air eat: for the LORD hath spoken it.
Anyone belonging to
Jeroboam who dies in the city will be eaten by dogs, and
anyone who dies in the field will be eaten by the birds of the air.’ For the LORD has spoken.
And all Israel shall
mourn for
him, and
bury him: for he only of
Jeroboam shall come to the grave, because in
him there is found some good thing toward the LORD God of Israel in the house of
Jeroboam.
All Israel will
mourn for
him and
bury him. For this is the only one belonging to
Jeroboam who will receive a proper burial, because only in
him has the LORD, the God of Israel, found any good in the house of
Jeroboam.
Moreover the LORD shall raise
him up a king over Israel, who shall cut off the house of
Jeroboam that day: but what? even now.
Moreover, the LORD will raise up for
Himself a king over Israel who will cut off the house of
Jeroboam. This is the day—
yes, even
today!
And they buried
him; and all Israel
mourned for
him, according to the word of the LORD, which he spake by the hand of his servant
Ahijah the prophet.
And they buried
him, and all Israel
mourned for
him, according to the word that the LORD had spoken through His servant
Ahijah the prophet.
And Judah did evil in the sight of the LORD, and they
provoked him to jealousy with their sins which they had committed, above all that their fathers had done.
And Judah did evil in the sight of the LORD, and by the sins they committed they
provoked Him to
jealous anger more than all their fathers had done.
And he walked in all the sins of his father, which he had done before him: and his heart was not perfect with the LORD his God, as the heart of David his father.
And Abijam walked in all the sins that his father before
him had committed, and his heart was not as fully devoted to the LORD his God as the heart of David his
forefather had been.
Nevertheless for David’s sake did the LORD his God give him a lamp in Jerusalem, to set up his son after him, and to establish Jerusalem:
Nevertheless, for the sake of David, the LORD his God gave him a lamp in Jerusalem by raising up a son to succeed him and to make Jerusalem strong.
Because David did that which was right in the eyes of the LORD, and turned not aside from any thing that he commanded him all the days of his life, save only in the matter of Uriah the Hittite.
For David had done what was right in the eyes of the LORD and had not turned aside from anything the LORD commanded all the days of his life, except in the matter of Uriah the Hittite.
And Abijam
slept with his fathers; and they buried
him in the city of David: and
Asa his son reigned in his
stead.
And Abijam rested with his fathers and was buried in the City of David, and his son
Asa reigned in his place.
And he brought in the things which his father had dedicated, and the things which himself had dedicated, into the house of the LORD, silver, and gold, and vessels.
And he brought into the house of the LORD the silver and gold and other articles that he and his father had dedicated.
Even in the third year of
Asa king of Judah did
Baasha slay him, and reigned in his
stead.
In the third year of
Asa’s reign over Judah,
Baasha killed
Nadab and reigned in his place.
And it came to pass, when he reigned, that he
smote all the house of
Jeroboam; he left not to
Jeroboam any that breathed, until he had destroyed
him, according unto the saying of the LORD, which he spake by his servant
Ahijah the Shilonite:
As soon as
Baasha became king, he struck down the entire household of
Jeroboam. He did not leave to
Jeroboam anyone that breathed, but destroyed them all according to the word that the LORD had spoken through His servant
Ahijah the Shilonite,
Him that dieth of
Baasha in the city shall the dogs eat; and
him that dieth of his in the fields shall the fowls of the air eat.
Anyone belonging to
Baasha who dies in the city will be eaten by dogs, and
anyone who dies in the field will be eaten by the birds of the air.”
And also by the hand of the prophet
Jehu the son of Hanani came the word of the LORD against
Baasha, and against his house, even for all the evil that he did in the sight of the LORD, in
provoking him to anger with the work of his hands, in being like the house of
Jeroboam; and because he killed
him.
Moreover, the word of the LORD came through the prophet
Jehu son of Hanani against
Baasha and his house, because of all the evil he had done in the sight of the LORD,
provoking Him to anger with the work of his hands and becoming like the house of
Jeroboam, and also because
Baasha had struck down the house of
Jeroboam.
And his servant Zimri, captain of half his
chariots,
conspired against
him, as he was in Tirzah, drinking
himself drunk in the house of Arza
steward of his house in Tirzah.
However, while Elah was in Tirzah getting
drunk in the house of Arza the
steward of his household there, Elah’s servant Zimri, the commander of half his
chariots,
conspired against
him.
And Zimri went in and
smote him, and killed
him, in the twenty and seventh year of
Asa king of Judah, and reigned in his
stead.
So in the twenty-seventh year of
Asa’s reign over Judah, Zimri went in, struck Elah down, and killed
him. And Zimri reigned in his place.
And it came to pass, when he began to reign, as soon as he sat on his throne, that he
slew all the house of
Baasha: he left
him not one that pisseth against a wall, neither of his kinsfolks, nor of his friends.
As soon as Zimri began to reign and was seated on the throne, he struck down the entire household of
Baasha. He did not leave a single male, whether a
kinsman or friend.
And Omri went up from Gibbethon, and all Israel with him, and they besieged Tirzah.
Then Omri and all the Israelites marched up from Gibbethon and besieged Tirzah.
And it came to pass, when Zimri saw that the city was taken, that he went into the palace of the king’s house, and burnt the king’s house over him with fire, and died,
When Zimri saw that the city was captured, he entered the citadel of the royal palace and burned it down upon himself. So he died
Then were the people of Israel divided into two parts: half of the people followed Tibni the son of Ginath, to make him king; and half followed Omri.
At that time the people of Israel were divided: Half of the people supported Tibni son of Ginath as king, and half supported Omri.
But Omri wrought evil in the eyes of the LORD, and did worse than all that were before him.
But Omri did evil in the sight of the LORD and acted more wickedly than all who were before him.
And
Ahab the son of Omri did evil in the sight of the LORD above all that were before
him.
However,
Ahab son of Omri did evil in the sight of the LORD, more than all who were before
him.
And it came to pass, as if it had been a light thing for
him to walk in the sins of
Jeroboam the son of Nebat, that he took to wife
Jezebel the daughter of Ethbaal king of the Zidonians, and went and served
Baal, and worshipped
him.
And as if it were not enough for
him to walk in the sins of
Jeroboam son of Nebat, he even married
Jezebel the daughter of Ethbaal king of the Sidonians, and he then proceeded to serve and worship
Baal.
And
Ahab made a
grove; and
Ahab did more to
provoke the LORD God of Israel to anger than all the kings of Israel that were before
him.
Then he set up an Asherah pole. Thus
Ahab did more to
provoke the LORD, the God of Israel, to anger than all the kings of Israel before
him.
And the word of the LORD came unto him, saying,
Then a revelation from the LORD came to
Elijah:
So he went and did according unto the word of the LORD: for he went and dwelt by the
brook Cherith, that is before Jordan.
So
Elijah did what the LORD had told
him, and he went and lived by the
Brook of Cherith, east of the Jordan.
And the ravens brought
him bread and flesh in the morning, and bread and flesh in the evening; and he
drank of the
brook.
The ravens would bring
him bread and meat in the morning and evening, and he would drink from the
brook.
And the word of the LORD came unto him, saying,
Then the word of the LORD came to
Elijah:
And it came to pass after these things, that the son of the woman, the
mistress of the house, fell sick; and his sickness was so
sore, that there was no breath left in
him.
Later, the son of the woman who owned the house became ill, and his sickness grew worse and worse, until no breath remained in him.
And he said unto her, Give me thy son. And he took
him out of her
bosom, and carried
him up into a
loft, where he abode, and laid
him upon his own bed.
But
Elijah said to her, “Give me your son.” So he took
him from her arms, carried
him to the upper room where he was staying, and laid
him on his own bed.
And he stretched
himself upon the child three times, and
cried unto the LORD, and said, O LORD my God, I pray thee, let this child’s soul come into
him again.
Then he stretched
himself out over the child three times and
cried out to the LORD, “O LORD my God, please let this boy’s life return to
him!”
And the LORD heard the voice of
Elijah; and the soul of the child came into
him again, and he revived.
And the LORD
listened to the voice of
Elijah, and the child’s life returned to
him, and he lived.
And
Elijah took the child, and brought
him down out of the chamber into the house, and delivered
him unto his mother: and
Elijah said, See, thy son liveth.
Then
Elijah took the child, brought
him down from the upper room into the house, and gave
him to his mother. “Look, your son is alive,”
Elijah declared.
So
Elijah went to present
himself to
Ahab. The famine was severe in Samaria,
So they divided the land between them to pass throughout it:
Ahab went one way by
himself, and
Obadiah went another way by
himself.
So they divided the land to
explore.
Ahab went one way by
himself, and
Obadiah went the other way by
himself.
And as
Obadiah was in the way, behold,
Elijah met
him: and he knew
him, and fell on his face, and said, Art thou that my lord
Elijah?
Now as
Obadiah went on his way,
Elijah suddenly met
him. When
Obadiah recognized
him, he fell facedown and said, “Is it you, my lord
Elijah?”
And he answered
him, I am: go, tell thy lord, Behold,
Elijah is here.
“It is I,” he answered. “Go tell your master, ‘
Elijah is here!’”
And
Elijah said, As the LORD of hosts liveth, before whom I stand, I will surely
shew myself unto
him to day.
Then
Elijah said, “As surely as the LORD of Hosts lives, before whom I stand, I will present myself to
Ahab today.”
And it came to pass, when
Ahab saw
Elijah, that
Ahab said unto
him, Art thou he that troubleth Israel?
When
Ahab saw
Elijah, he said to
him, “Is that you, O troubler of Israel?”
And
Elijah came unto all the people, and said, How long
halt ye between two opinions? if the LORD be God, follow
him: but if
Baal, then follow
him. And the people answered
him not a word.
Then
Elijah approached all the people and said, “How long will you waver between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow
Him. But if
Baal is God, follow
him.” But the people did not answer a word.
And call ye on the name of your gods, and I will call on the name of the LORD: and the God that answereth by fire, let him be God. And all the people answered and said, It is well spoken.
Then you may call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the LORD. The God who answers by fire, He is God.” And all the people answered, “What you say is good.”
And
Elijah said unto all the people, Come near unto me. And all the people came near unto
him. And he repaired the altar of the LORD that was broken down.
Then
Elijah said to all the people, “Come near to me.” So all the people approached
him, and he repaired the altar of the LORD that had been
torn down.
And he put the wood in order, and cut the
bullock in pieces, and laid
him on the wood, and said, Fill four barrels with water, and pour it on the burnt sacrifice, and on the wood.
Next, he arranged the wood, cut up the bull, placed it on the wood,
So
Ahab went up to eat and to drink. And
Elijah went up to the top of
Carmel; and he cast
himself down upon the earth, and put his face between his knees,
So
Ahab went up to eat and drink. But
Elijah climbed to the summit of
Carmel, bent down on the ground, and put his face between his knees.
But he
himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a
juniper tree: and he requested for
himself that he might die; and said, It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers.
while he
himself traveled on a day’s journey into the wilderness. He sat down under a
broom tree and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough, LORD,” he said. “Take my life, for I am no better than my fathers.”
And as he lay and
slept under a
juniper tree, behold, then an angel touched
him, and said unto
him, Arise and eat.
Then he lay down under the
broom tree and fell
asleep. Suddenly an angel touched
him and said, “Get up and eat.”
And he looked, and, behold, there was a
cake baken on the coals, and a
cruse of water at his head. And he did eat and drink, and laid
him down again.
And he looked around, and there by his head was a
cake of bread
baked over hot coals, and a
jar of water. So he
ate and
drank and lay down again.
And the angel of the LORD came again the second time, and touched him, and said, Arise and eat; because the journey is too great for thee.
A second time the angel of the LORD returned and touched him, saying, “Get up and eat, or the journey will be too much for you.”
And he came thither unto a cave, and
lodged there; and, behold, the word of the LORD came to
him, and he said unto
him, What doest thou here,
Elijah?
There
Elijah entered a cave and spent the night. And the word of the LORD came to
him, saying, “What are you doing here,
Elijah?”
And it was so, when
Elijah heard it, that he
wrapped his face in his
mantle, and went out, and stood in the entering in of the cave. And, behold, there came a voice unto
him, and said, What doest thou here,
Elijah?
When
Elijah heard it, he
wrapped his face in his
cloak and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave. Suddenly a voice came to
him and said, “What are you doing here,
Elijah?”
And the LORD said unto
him, Go, return on thy way to the wilderness of Damascus: and when thou comest,
anoint Hazael to be king over Syria:
Then the LORD said to
him, “Go back by the way you came, and go to the Desert of Damascus. When you arrive, you are to
anoint Hazael as king over
Aram.
And it shall come to pass, that
him that escapeth the sword of
Hazael shall
Jehu slay: and
him that escapeth from the sword of
Jehu shall
Elisha slay.
Yet I have left me seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed unto
Baal, and every mouth which hath not
kissed him.
Nevertheless, I have reserved seven thousand in Israel—all whose knees have not bowed to
Baal and whose mouths have not
kissed him.”
So he departed thence, and found
Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was
plowing with twelve yoke of oxen before
him, and he with the
twelfth: and
Elijah passed by
him, and cast his
mantle upon
him.
And he left the oxen, and ran after
Elijah, and said, Let me, I pray thee,
kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow thee. And he said unto
him, Go back again: for what have I done to thee?
So
Elisha left the oxen, ran after
Elijah, and said, “Please let me
kiss my father and mother goodbye, and then I will follow you.” “Go on back,”
Elijah replied, “for what have I done to you?”
And he returned back from
him, and took a yoke of oxen, and
slew them, and boiled their flesh with the instruments of the oxen, and gave unto the people, and they did eat. Then he arose, and went after
Elijah, and ministered unto
him.
So
Elisha turned back from
him, took his pair of oxen, and slaughtered them. With the oxen’s
equipment, he
cooked the meat and gave it to the people, and they
ate. Then he set out to follow and serve
Elijah.
And Ben-
hadad the king of Syria gathered all his host together: and there were thirty and two kings with
him, and horses, and
chariots: and he went up and besieged Samaria, and
warred against it.
Now Ben-
hadad king of
Aram assembled his entire army. Accompanied by thirty-two kings with their horses and
chariots, he marched up, besieged Samaria, and
waged war against it.
And he sent messengers to
Ahab king of Israel into the city, and said unto
him, Thus saith Ben-
hadad,
Then he sent messengers into the city to
Ahab king of Israel,
Then the king of Israel called all the elders of the land, and said, Mark, I pray you, and see how this man seeketh mischief: for he sent unto me for my wives, and for my children, and for my silver, and for my gold; and I denied him not.
Then the king of Israel summoned all the elders of the land and said, “Please take note and see that this man is looking for trouble, for when he demanded my wives, my children, my silver, and my gold, I did not deny him.”
And all the elders and all the people said unto
him,
Hearken not unto
him, nor consent.
And the elders and the people all said, “Do not
listen to
him or consent to his terms.”
Wherefore he said unto the messengers of Ben-
hadad, Tell my lord the king, All that thou
didst send for to thy servant at the first I will do: but this thing I may not do. And the messengers departed, and brought
him word again.
So
Ahab answered the messengers of Ben-
hadad, “Tell my lord the king, ‘All that you demanded of your servant the first time I will do, but this thing I cannot do.’” So the messengers departed and relayed the message to Ben-
hadad.
And Ben-
hadad sent unto
him, and said, The gods do so unto me, and more also, if the dust of Samaria shall suffice for handfuls for all the people that follow me.
Then Ben-
hadad sent another message to
Ahab: “May the gods deal with me, and ever so severely, if enough dust remains of Samaria for each of my men to have a handful.”
And the king of Israel answered and said, Tell
him, Let not
him that girdeth on his
harness boast himself as he that putteth it off.
And the king of Israel replied, “Tell
him: ‘The one putting on his
armor should not
boast like one taking it off.’”
And they went out at
noon. But Ben-
hadad was drinking
himself drunk in the pavilions, he and the kings, the thirty and two kings that helped
him.
They marched out at
noon while Ben-
hadad and the 32 kings allied with
him were in their tents getting
drunk.
And the young men of the princes of the provinces went out first; and Ben-
hadad sent out, and they told
him, saying, There are men come out of Samaria.
And the young officers of the district governors marched out first. Now Ben-
hadad had sent out scouts, who reported to
him, “Men are marching out of Samaria.”
And the prophet came to the king of Israel, and said unto
him, Go,
strengthen thyself, and mark, and see what thou doest: for at the return of the year the king of Syria will come up against thee.
Afterward, the prophet approached the king of Israel and said, “Go and
strengthen your position, and take note what you must do, for in the spring the king of
Aram will come up against you.”
And the servants of the king of Syria said unto him, Their gods are gods of the hills; therefore they were stronger than we; but let us fight against them in the plain, and surely we shall be stronger than they.
Meanwhile, the servants of the king of
Aram said to
him, “Their gods are gods of the hills. That is why they prevailed over us. Instead, we should fight them on the plains; surely then we will prevail.
And his servants said unto
him, Behold now, we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel are
merciful kings: let us, I pray thee, put
sackcloth on our loins, and ropes upon our heads, and go out to the king of Israel:
peradventure he will save thy life.
Then the servants of Ben-
hadad said to
him, “Look now, we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel are
merciful. Let us go out to the king of Israel with
sackcloth around our waists and ropes around our heads. Perhaps he will
spare your life.”
Now the men did
diligently observe whether any thing would come from
him, and did
hastily catch it: and they said, Thy brother Ben-
hadad. Then he said, Go ye, bring
him. Then Ben-
hadad came forth to
him; and he caused
him to come up into the
chariot.
Now the men were looking for a sign of hope, and they quickly
grasped at this word and replied, “
Yes, your brother Ben-
hadad.” “Go and get
him!” said the king. Then Ben-
hadad came out, and
Ahab had
him come up into his
chariot.
And Ben-
hadad said unto
him, The cities, which my father took from thy father, I will restore; and thou shalt make streets for thee in Damascus, as my father made in Samaria. Then said
Ahab, I will send thee away with this covenant. So he made a covenant with
him, and sent
him away.
Ben-
hadad said to
him, “I will restore the cities my father took from your father; you may set up your own marketplaces in Damascus, as my father did in Samaria.” “By this treaty I release you,”
Ahab replied. So he made a treaty with
him and sent
him away.
