Berean Standard Bible BSB Bible
I came near unto one of them that stood by, and asked him the truth of all this. So he told me, and made me know the interpretation of the things.
I approached one of those who were standing there, and I asked him the true meaning of all this. So he told me the interpretation of these things:
And the kingdom and dominion, and the greatness of the kingdom under the whole heaven, shall be given to the people of the saints of the most High, whose kingdom is an
everlasting kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey
him.
Then the sovereignty, dominion, and greatness of the kingdoms under all of heaven will be given to the people, the saints of the Most High. His kingdom will be an
everlasting kingdom, and all rulers will serve and obey
Him.’
I saw the ram
pushing westward, and northward, and southward; so that no beasts might stand before
him, neither was there any that could deliver out of his hand; but he did according to his will, and became great.
I saw the ram charging toward the west and the north and the south. No animal could stand against
him, and there was no
deliverance from his power. He did as he pleased and became great.
And he came to the ram that had two horns, which I had seen standing before the river, and ran unto
him in the
fury of his power.
He came toward the two-horned ram I had seen standing beside the canal and
rushed at
him with
furious power.
And I saw
him come close unto the ram, and he was moved with
choler against
him, and
smote the ram, and
brake his two horns: and there was no power in the ram to stand before
him, but he cast
him down to the ground, and stamped upon
him: and there was none that could deliver the ram out of his hand.
I saw
him approach the ram in a
rage against
him, and he struck the ram and
shattered his two horns. The ram was powerless to stand against
him, and the goat threw
him to the ground and
trampled him, and no one could deliver the ram from his power.
Yea, he
magnified himself even to the prince of the host, and by
him the daily sacrifice was taken away, and the place of his sanctuary was cast down.
It
magnified itself, even to the Prince of the host; it removed His daily sacrifice and overthrew the place of His sanctuary.
And an host was given
him against the daily sacrifice by reason of
transgression, and it cast down the truth to the ground; and it practised, and
prospered.
And in the rebellion, the host and the daily sacrifice were given over to the horn, and it
flung truth to the ground and
prospered in whatever it did.
Then I heard one saint speaking, and another saint said unto that certain saint which spake, How long shall be the vision concerning the daily sacrifice, and the
transgression of
desolation, to give both the sanctuary and the host to be
trodden under foot?
Then I heard a holy one speaking, and another holy one said to
him, “How long until the
fulfillment of the vision of the daily sacrifice, the rebellion that causes
desolation, and the surrender of the sanctuary and of the host to be
trampled?”
And through his policy also he shall cause craft to
prosper in his hand; and he shall
magnify himself in his heart, and by peace shall destroy many: he shall also stand up against the Prince of princes; but he shall be broken without hand.
Through his craft and by his hand, he will cause
deceit to
prosper, and in his own mind he will make
himself great. In a time of peace he will destroy many, and he will even stand against the Prince of princes. Yet he will be broken off, but not by human hands.
And I set my face unto the Lord God, to seek by prayer and supplications, with fasting, and
sackcloth, and ashes:
So I turned my attention to the Lord God to seek
Him by prayer and petition, with fasting,
sackcloth, and ashes.
And I prayed unto the LORD my God, and made my confession, and said, O Lord, the great and
dreadful God, keeping the covenant and mercy to them that love
him, and to them that keep his commandments;
And I prayed to the LORD my God and
confessed, “O, Lord, the great and
awesome God, who keeps His covenant of loving devotion to those who love
Him and keep His commandments,
To the Lord our God belong
mercies and forgivenesses, though we have rebelled against
him;
Yea, all Israel have
transgressed thy law, even by departing, that they might not obey thy voice; therefore the
curse is poured upon us, and the oath that is written in the law of Moses the servant of God, because we have
sinned against
him.
All Israel has
transgressed Your law and turned away, refusing to obey Your voice; so the oath and the
curse written in the Law of Moses the servant of God has been poured out on us, because we have
sinned against You.
And after
threescore and two weeks shall
Messiah be cut off, but not for
himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined.
Then after the sixty-two weeks the
Messiah will be cut off and will have nothing. Then the people of the prince who is to come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end will come like a flood, and until the end there will be war; desolations have been decreed.
And he shall
confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the
oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it
desolate, even until the
consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the
desolate.
And he will
confirm a covenant with many for one week, but in the middle of the week he will put an end to sacrifice and offering. And on the wing of the temple will come the
abomination that causes
desolation, until the decreed destruction is poured out upon
him.”
In the third year of Cyrus king of Persia a thing was revealed unto Daniel, whose name was called Belteshazzar; and the thing was true, but the time appointed was long: and he understood the thing, and had understanding of the vision.
In the third year of Cyrus king of Persia, a message was revealed to Daniel, who was called Belteshazzar. The message was true, and it concerned a great conflict. And the understanding of the message was given to him in a vision.
And, behold, one like the
similitude of the sons of men touched my lips: then I opened my mouth, and spake, and said unto
him that stood before me, O my lord, by the vision my sorrows are turned upon me, and I have retained no strength.
And suddenly one with the likeness of a man touched my lips, and I opened my mouth and said to the one standing before me, “My lord, because of the vision, I am overcome with
anguish, and I have no strength.
And the king of the south shall be strong, and one of his princes; and he shall be strong above him, and have dominion; his dominion shall be a great dominion.
The king of the South will grow strong, but one of his commanders will grow even stronger and will rule his own kingdom with great authority.
And the king of the south shall be moved with
choler, and shall come forth and fight with
him, even with the king of the north: and he shall set forth a great multitude; but the multitude shall be given into his hand.
In a
rage, the king of the South will march out to fight the king of the North, who will raise a large army, but it will be delivered into the hand of his enemy.
But he that cometh against him shall do according to his own will, and none shall stand before him: and he shall stand in the glorious land, which by his hand shall be consumed.
The
invader will do as he pleases, and no one will stand against
him. He will establish
himself in the Beautiful Land, with destruction in his hand.
He shall also set his face to enter with the strength of his whole kingdom, and upright ones with him; thus shall he do: and he shall give him the daughter of women, corrupting her: but she shall not stand on his side, neither be for him.
He will
resolve to come with the strength of his whole kingdom, and will reach an agreement with the king of the South. He will give
him a daughter in marriage in order to overthrow the kingdom, but his plan will not succeed or help
him.
After this shall he turn his face unto the isles, and shall take many: but a prince for his own behalf shall cause the reproach offered by him to cease; without his own reproach he shall cause it to turn upon him.
Then he will turn his face to the coastlands and capture many of them. But a commander will put an end to his reproach and will turn it back upon him.
And in his estate shall stand up a
vile person, to whom they shall not give the honour of the kingdom: but he shall come in
peaceably, and obtain the kingdom by
flatteries.
In his place a
despicable person will arise; royal honors will not be given to
him, but he will come in a time of peace and seize the kingdom by
intrigue.
And with the arms of a flood shall they be
overflown from before
him, and shall be broken;
yea, also the prince of the covenant.
Then a flood of forces will be swept away before him and destroyed, along with a prince of the covenant.
And after the league made with
him he shall work
deceitfully: for he shall come up, and shall become strong with a small people.
After an alliance is made with
him, he will act
deceitfully; for he will rise to power with only a few people.
And he shall
stir up his power and his courage against the king of the south with a great army; and the king of the south shall be
stirred up to battle with a very great and mighty army; but he shall not stand: for they shall
forecast devices against
him.
And with a large army he will
stir up his power and his courage against the king of the South, who will
mobilize a very large and powerful army but will not
withstand the plots devised against
him.
Yea, they that feed of the portion of his meat shall destroy
him, and his army shall overflow: and many shall fall down slain.
Those who eat from his provisions will seek to destroy him; his army will be swept away, and many will fall slain.
For the ships of
Chittim shall come against
him: therefore he shall be
grieved, and return, and have
indignation against the holy covenant: so shall he do; he shall even return, and have intelligence with them that
forsake the holy covenant.
Ships of Kittim will come against
him, and he will lose heart. Then he will turn back and
rage against the holy covenant and do damage. So he will return and show favor to those who
forsake the holy covenant.
And such as do wickedly against the covenant shall he corrupt by
flatteries: but the people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits.
With
flattery he will corrupt those who
violate the covenant, but the people who know their God will firmly resist
him.
And the king shall do according to his will; and he shall
exalt himself, and
magnify himself above every god, and shall speak marvellous things against the God of gods, and shall
prosper till the
indignation be accomplished: for that that is determined shall be done.
Then the king will do as he pleases and will
exalt and
magnify himself above every god, and he will speak
monstrous things against the God of gods. He will be successful until the time of wrath is completed, for what has been decreed must be accomplished.
Neither shall he regard the God of his fathers, nor the desire of women, nor regard any god: for he shall
magnify himself above all.
He will show no regard for the gods of his fathers, nor for the one desired by women, nor for any other god, because he will
magnify himself above them all.
Thus shall he do in the most strong holds with a strange god, whom he shall acknowledge and increase with glory: and he shall cause them to rule over many, and shall divide the land for gain.
He will attack the strongest fortresses with the help of a foreign god and will greatly honor those who acknowledge him, making them rulers over many and distributing the land for a price.
And at the time of the end shall the king of the south
push at
him: and the king of the north shall come against
him like a
whirlwind, with
chariots, and with
horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter into the countries, and shall overflow and pass over.
At the time of the end, the king of the South will
engage him in battle, but the king of the North will storm out against
him with
chariots,
horsemen, and many ships,
invading many countries and
sweeping through them like a flood.
But he shall have power over the treasures of gold and of silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt: and the Libyans and the Ethiopians shall be at his steps.
He will gain control of the treasures of gold and silver and over all the riches of Egypt, and the Libyans and Cushites will also submit to him.
But
tidings out of the east and out of the north shall trouble
him: therefore he shall go forth with great
fury to destroy, and utterly to make away many.
But news from the east and the north will
alarm him, and he will go out with great
fury to destroy many and
devote them to destruction.
And he shall plant the tabernacles of his palace between the seas in the glorious holy mountain; yet he shall come to his end, and none shall help him.
He will pitch his royal tents between the sea and the beautiful holy mountain, but he will meet his end with no one to help him.
And I heard the man clothed in linen, which was upon the waters of the river, when he held up his right hand and his left hand unto heaven, and
sware by
him that liveth for ever that it shall be for a time, times, and an half; and when he shall have accomplished to
scatter the power of the holy people, all these things shall be finished.
And the man dressed in linen, who was above the waters of the river, raised his right hand and his left hand toward heaven, and I heard
him swear by
Him who lives
forever, saying, “It will be for a time, and times, and half a time. When the power of the holy people has finally been
shattered, all these things will be completed.”
The beginning of the word of the LORD by
Hosea. And the LORD said to
Hosea, Go, take unto thee a wife of whoredoms and children of whoredoms: for the land hath committed great
whoredom, departing from the LORD.
So he went and took
Gomer the daughter of Diblaim; which conceived, and bare
him a son.
So
Hosea went and married
Gomer daughter of Diblaim, and she conceived and bore
him a son.
And the LORD said unto
him, Call his name
Jezreel; for yet a little while, and I will
avenge the blood of
Jezreel upon the house of
Jehu, and will cause to cease the kingdom of the house of Israel.
Then the LORD said to
Hosea, “Name
him Jezreel, for soon I will bring the
bloodshed of
Jezreel upon the house of
Jehu, and I will put an end to the kingdom of Israel.
And she conceived again, and bare a daughter. And God said unto him, Call her name Lo-ruhamah: for I will no more have mercy upon the house of Israel; but I will utterly take them away.
Gomer again conceived and gave birth to a daughter, and the LORD said to
Hosea, “Name her Lo-ruhamah, for I will no longer have
compassion on the house of Israel, that I should ever
forgive them.
Then said God, Call his name Lo-ammi: for ye are not my people, and I will not be your God.
And the LORD said, “Name him Lo-ammi, for you are not My people, and I am not your God.
Ephraim is joined to idols: let him alone.
Ephraim is joined to idols; leave him alone!
They shall go with their flocks and with their herds to seek the LORD; but they shall not find him; he hath withdrawn himself from them.
They go with their flocks and herds to seek the LORD, but they do not find Him; He has withdrawn Himself from them.
For I will be unto Ephraim as a lion, and as a young lion to the house of Judah: I, even I, will
tear and go away; I will take away, and none shall
rescue him.
For I am like a lion to Ephraim and like a young lion to the house of Judah. I, even I, will
tear them to pieces and then go away. I will carry them off where no one can
rescue them.
In the day of our king the princes have made him sick with bottles of wine; he stretched out his hand with scorners.
The princes are inflamed with wine on the day of our king; so he joins hands with those who
mock him.
Ephraim, he hath mixed
himself among the people; Ephraim is a
cake not turned.
Ephraim mixes with the nations; Ephraim is an unturned
cake.
Strangers have
devoured his strength, and he knoweth it not:
yea, gray hairs are here and there upon
him, yet he knoweth not.
Foreigners
consume his strength, but he does not notice. Even his hair is
streaked with gray, but he does not know.
And the pride of Israel testifieth to his face: and they do not return to the LORD their God, nor seek him for all this.
Israel’s
arrogance testifies against them, yet they do not return to the LORD their God;
despite all this, they do not seek
Him.
Israel hath cast off the thing that is good: the enemy shall pursue him.
But Israel has rejected good; an enemy will pursue him.
For they are gone up to Assyria, a wild
ass alone by
himself: Ephraim hath
hired lovers.
For they have gone up to Assyria like a wild
donkey on its own. Ephraim has
hired lovers.
Because Ephraim hath made many altars to sin, altars shall be unto him to sin.
Though Ephraim multiplied the altars for sin, they became his altars for
sinning.
I have written to him the great things of my law, but they were counted as a strange thing.
Though I wrote for them the great things of My law, they regarded them as something strange.
They shall not offer wine offerings to the LORD, neither shall they be pleasing unto
him: their sacrifices shall be unto them as the bread of mourners; all that eat thereof shall be
polluted: for their bread for their soul shall not come into the house of the LORD.
They will not pour out wine offerings to the LORD, and their sacrifices will not please
Him, but will be to them like the bread of mourners; all who eat will be
defiled. For their bread will be for themselves; it will not enter the house of the LORD.
My God will cast them away, because they did not
hearken unto
him: and they shall be wanderers among the nations.
My God will
reject them because they have not obeyed
Him; and they shall be wanderers among the nations.
Israel is an empty vine, he bringeth forth fruit unto himself: according to the multitude of his fruit he hath increased the altars; according to the goodness of his land they have made goodly images.
Israel was a
luxuriant vine, yielding fruit for
himself. The more his fruit increased, the more he increased the altars. The better his land produced, the better he made the sacred pillars.
When Israel was a child, then I loved him, and called my son out of Egypt.
When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called My son.
And my people are bent to
backsliding from me: though they called them to the most High, none at all would
exalt him.
My people are bent on turning from Me. Though they call to the Most High, He will by no means
exalt them.
The LORD hath also a controversy with Judah, and will
punish Jacob according to his ways; according to his doings will he
recompense him.
The LORD also brings a charge against Judah. He will
punish Jacob according to his ways and repay
him according to his deeds.
Yea, he had power over the angel, and prevailed: he
wept, and made
supplication unto
him: he found
him in
Bethel, and there he spake with us;
Yes, he struggled with the angel and prevailed; he
wept and sought His favor; he found
Him at
Bethel and spoke with
Him there—
Ephraim
provoked him to anger most bitterly: therefore shall he leave his blood upon
him, and his reproach shall his Lord return unto
him.
Ephraim has
provoked bitter anger, so his Lord will leave his bloodguilt upon
him and repay
him for his contempt.
I gave thee a king in mine anger, and took him away in my wrath.
So in My anger I gave you a king, and in My wrath I took him away.
The sorrows of a
travailing woman shall come upon
him: he is an unwise son; for he should not stay long in the place of the breaking forth of children.
Labor pains come upon
him, but he is an unwise son. When the time arrives, he fails to present
himself at the opening of the
womb.
Take with you words, and turn to the LORD: say unto
him, Take away all iniquity, and receive us
graciously: so will we render the
calves of our lips.
Bring your confessions and return to the LORD. Say to
Him: “Take away all our iniquity and receive us
graciously, that we may present the fruit of our lips.
I will
heal their
backsliding, I will love them freely: for mine anger is turned away from
him.
I will
heal their
apostasy; I will freely love them, for My anger has turned away from them.
Ephraim shall say, What have I to do any more with idols? I have heard
him, and observed
him: I am like a green
fir tree. From me is thy fruit found.
O Ephraim, what have I to do anymore with idols? It is I who answer and watch over
him. I am like a flourishing
cypress; your fruit comes from Me.
Who is wise, and he shall understand these things?
prudent, and he shall know them? for the ways of the LORD are right, and the just shall walk in them: but the transgressors shall fall therein.
And
rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the LORD your God: for he is
gracious and
merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth
him of the evil.
So
rend your hearts and not your garments, and return to the LORD your God. For He is
gracious and
compassionate, slow to anger, abounding in loving devotion. And He relents from sending
disaster.
Who knoweth if he will return and
repent, and leave a blessing behind
him; even a meat offering and a drink offering unto the LORD your God?
Who knows? He may turn and relent and leave a blessing behind Him— grain and drink offerings for the LORD your God.
But I will remove far off from you the northern army, and will drive
him into a land barren and
desolate, with his face toward the east sea, and his hinder part toward the utmost sea, and his
stink shall come up, and his ill savour shall come up, because he hath done great things.
The northern army I will drive away from you,
banishing it to a barren and
desolate land, its front ranks into the Eastern Sea, and its rear guard into the Western Sea. And its
stench will rise; its foul
odor will
ascend. For He has done great things.
I will break also the bar of Damascus, and cut off the inhabitant from the plain of
Aven, and
him that holdeth the
sceptre from the house of
Eden: and the people of Syria shall go into captivity unto Kir, saith the LORD.
I will break down the gates of Damascus; I will cut off the ruler of the Valley of
Aven and the one who wields the
scepter in Beth-
eden. The people of
Aram will be exiled to Kir,” says the LORD.
And I will cut off the inhabitant from
Ashdod, and
him that holdeth the
sceptre from Ashkelon, and I will turn mine hand against
Ekron: and the
remnant of the Philistines shall perish, saith the Lord GOD.
I will cut off the ruler of
Ashdod and the one who wields the
scepter in Ashkelon. I will turn My hand against
Ekron, and the
remnant of the Philistines will perish,” says the Lord GOD.
And I will cut off the judge from the midst thereof, and will
slay all the princes thereof with
him, saith the LORD.
I will cut off the ruler of Moab and kill all the officials with him,” says the LORD.
Therefore the flight shall perish from the swift, and the strong shall not
strengthen his force, neither shall the mighty deliver
himself:
Escape will fail the swift, the strong will not prevail by his strength, and the mighty will not save his life.
Neither shall he stand that handleth the bow; and he that is swift of foot shall not deliver himself: neither shall he that rideth the horse deliver himself.
The archer will not stand his ground, the fleet of foot will not escape, and the
horseman will not save his life.
Can a bird fall in a
snare upon the earth, where no
gin is for
him? shall one take up a
snare from the earth, and have taken nothing at all?
Does a bird land in a
snare where no
bait has been set? Does a
trap spring from the ground when it has nothing to catch?
That in the day that I shall visit the transgressions of Israel upon
him I will also visit the altars of
Bethel: and the horns of the altar shall be cut off, and fall to the ground.
On the day I
punish Israel for their transgressions, I will visit destruction on the altars of
Bethel; the horns of the altar will be cut off, and they will fall to the ground.
Seek
him that maketh the seven stars and
Orion, and turneth the shadow of death into the morning, and maketh the day dark with night: that calleth for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth: The LORD is his name:
He who made the
Pleiades and
Orion, who turns darkness into
dawn and darkens day into night, who
summons the waters of the sea and pours them over the face of the earth— the LORD is His name—
They
hate him that rebuketh in the gate, and they
abhor him that speaketh uprightly.
There are those who
hate the one who reproves in the gate and
despise him who speaks with
integrity.
Forasmuch therefore as your
treading is upon the poor, and ye take from
him burdens of wheat: ye have built houses of
hewn stone, but ye shall not dwell in them; ye have planted pleasant vineyards, but ye shall not drink wine of them.
Therefore, because you
trample on the poor and exact from
him a tax of grain, you will never live in the stone houses you have built; you will never drink the wine from the
lush vineyards you have planted.
As if a man did
flee from a lion, and a bear met
him; or went into the house, and
leaned his hand on the wall, and a serpent
bit him.
It will be like a man who flees from a lion, only to
encounter a bear, or who enters his house and rests his hand against the wall, only to be
bitten by a
snake.
The Lord GOD hath
sworn by
himself, saith the LORD the God of hosts, I
abhor the
excellency of Jacob, and
hate his palaces: therefore will I deliver up the city with all that is therein.
The Lord GOD has
sworn by
Himself—the LORD, the God of Hosts, has declared: “I
abhor Jacob’s pride and
detest his citadels, so I will deliver up the city and everything in it.”
And a man’s uncle shall take him up, and he that burneth him, to bring out the bones out of the house, and shall say unto him that is by the sides of the house, Is there yet any with thee? and he shall say, No. Then shall he say, Hold thy tongue: for we may not make mention of the name of the LORD.
And when the relative who is to burn the bodies picks them up to remove them from the house, he will call to one inside, “Is
anyone else with you?” “None,” that person will answer. “Silence,” the relative will
retort, “for the name of the LORD must not be
invoked.”
Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that the
plowman shall overtake the
reaper, and the
treader of grapes
him that soweth seed; and the mountains shall drop sweet wine, and all the hills shall
melt.
“Behold, the days are coming,” declares the LORD, “when the
plowman will overtake the
reaper and the
treader of grapes, the
sower of seed. The mountains will
drip with sweet wine, with which all the hills will flow.
All the men of thy
confederacy have brought thee even to the border: the men that were at peace with thee have
deceived thee, and prevailed against thee; they that eat thy bread have laid a wound under thee: there is none understanding in
him.
All the men allied with you will drive you to the border; the men at peace with you will
deceive and overpower you. Those who eat your bread will set a
trap for you without your awareness of it.
So the
shipmaster came to
him, and said unto
him, What meanest thou, O sleeper? arise, call upon thy God, if so be that God will think upon us, that we perish not.
The captain approached him and said, “How can you sleep? Get up and call upon your God. Perhaps this God will consider us, so that we may not perish.”
Then said they unto him, Tell us, we pray thee, for whose cause this evil is upon us; What is thine occupation? and whence comest thou? what is thy country? and of what people art thou?
“Tell us now,” they demanded, “who is to
blame for this
calamity that is upon us? What is your occupation, and where have you come from? What is your country, and who are your people?”
Then were the men exceedingly afraid, and said unto him, Why hast thou done this? For the men knew that he fled from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them.
Then the men were even more afraid and said to
him, “What have you done?” The men knew that he was
fleeing from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them.
Then said they unto
him, What shall we do unto thee, that the sea may be calm unto us? for the sea wrought, and was
tempestuous.
Now the sea was growing worse and worse, so they said to
Jonah, “What must we do to you to calm this sea for us?”
So they took up
Jonah, and cast
him forth into the sea: and the sea ceased from her
raging.
At this, they
picked up
Jonah and cast
him into the sea, and the
raging sea grew calm.
Then the men feared the LORD exceedingly, and offered a sacrifice unto the LORD, and made vows.
Then the men feared the LORD greatly, and they offered a sacrifice to the LORD and made vows to Him.
For word came unto the king of
Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and he laid his
robe from
him, and covered
him with
sackcloth, and sat in ashes.
When word reached the king of
Nineveh, he got up from his throne, took off his royal
robe, covered
himself with
sackcloth, and sat in ashes.
So
Jonah went out of the city, and sat on the east side of the city, and there made
him a
booth, and sat under it in the shadow, till he might see what would become of the city.
Then
Jonah left the city and sat down east of it, where he made
himself a shelter and sat in its shade to see what would happen to the city.
And the LORD God prepared a
gourd, and made it to come up over
Jonah, that it might be a shadow over his head, to deliver
him from his grief. So
Jonah was exceeding
glad of the
gourd.
So the LORD God appointed a vine, and it grew up to provide shade over
Jonah’s head to ease his discomfort, and
Jonah was greatly pleased with the plant.
And it came to pass, when the sun did arise, that God prepared a
vehement east wind; and the sun beat upon the head of
Jonah, that he
fainted, and wished in
himself to die, and said, It is better for me to die than to live.
As the sun was rising, God appointed a
scorching east wind, and the sun beat down on
Jonah’s head so that he grew
faint and wished to die, saying, “It is better for me to die than to live.”
And the mountains shall be
molten under
him, and the valleys shall be
