Berean Standard Bible BSB Bible
The censers of these sinners against their own souls, let them make them broad plates for a covering of the altar: for they offered them before the LORD, therefore they are
hallowed: and they shall be a sign unto the children of Israel.
As for the censers of those who
sinned at the cost of their own lives, hammer them into sheets to overlay the altar, for these were presented before the LORD, and so have become holy. They will serve as a sign to the
Israelites.”
To be a
memorial unto the children of Israel, that no stranger, which is not of the seed of Aaron, come near to offer incense before the LORD; that he be not as
Korah, and as his company: as the LORD said to him by the hand of Moses.
just as the LORD commanded him through Moses. This was to be a reminder to the
Israelites that no outsider who is not a
descendant of Aaron should approach to offer incense before the LORD, lest he become like
Korah and his followers.
Speak unto the children of Israel, and take of every one of them a rod according to the house of their fathers, of all their princes according to the house of their fathers twelve rods: write thou every man’s name upon his rod.
“Speak to the Israelites and take from them twelve staffs, one from the leader of each tribe. Write each man’s name on his staff,
And it shall come to pass, that the man’s rod, whom I shall choose, shall
blossom: and I will make to cease from me the murmurings of the children of Israel, whereby they
murmur against you.
The staff belonging to the man I choose will
sprout, and I will rid Myself of the constant
grumbling of the
Israelites against you.”
And Moses spake unto the children of Israel, and every one of their princes gave him a rod
apiece, for each prince one, according to their fathers’ houses, even twelve rods: and the rod of Aaron was among their rods.
So Moses spoke to the Israelites, and each of their leaders gave him a staff—one for each of the leaders of their tribes, twelve staffs in all. And Aaron’s staff was among them.
And Moses brought out all the rods from before the LORD unto all the children of Israel: and they looked, and took every man his rod.
Then Moses brought out all the staffs from the LORD’s presence to all the Israelites. They saw them, and each man took his own staff.
And the children of Israel spake unto Moses, saying, Behold, we die, we perish, we all perish.
Then the Israelites declared to Moses, “Look, we are perishing! We are lost; we are all lost!
And ye shall keep the charge of the sanctuary, and the charge of the altar: that there be no wrath any more upon the children of Israel.
And you shall attend to the duties of the sanctuary and of the altar, so that wrath may not fall on the Israelites again.
And I, behold, I have taken your brethren the Levites from among the children of Israel: to you they are given as a gift for the LORD, to do the service of the tabernacle of the congregation.
Behold, I Myself have selected your fellow Levites from the Israelites as a gift to you, dedicated to the LORD to perform the service for the Tent of Meeting.
And the LORD spake unto Aaron, Behold, I also have given thee the charge of mine
heave offerings of all the
hallowed things of the children of Israel; unto thee have I given them by reason of the
anointing, and to thy sons, by an
ordinance for ever.
Then the LORD said to Aaron, “Behold, I have put you in charge of My offerings. As for all the sacred offerings of the Israelites, I have given them to you and your sons as a portion and a permanent statute.
And this is thine; the
heave offering of their gift, with all the wave offerings of the children of Israel: I have given them unto thee, and to thy sons and to thy daughters with thee, by a statute for ever: every one that is clean in thy house shall eat of it.
And this is yours as well: the offering of their gifts, along with all the wave offerings of the
Israelites. I have given this to you and your sons and daughters as a permanent statute. Every
ceremonially clean person in your household may eat it.
All the best of the oil, and all the best of the wine, and of the wheat, the firstfruits of them which they shall offer unto the LORD, them have I given thee.
I give you all the freshest olive oil and all the finest new wine and grain that the Israelites give to the LORD as their firstfruits.
All the
heave offerings of the holy things, which the children of Israel offer unto the LORD, have I given thee, and thy sons and thy daughters with thee, by a statute for ever: it is a covenant of salt for ever before the LORD unto thee and to thy seed with thee.
All the holy offerings that the Israelites present to the LORD I give to you and to your sons and daughters as a permanent statute. It is a permanent covenant of salt before the LORD for you and your offspring.”
And the LORD spake unto Aaron, Thou shalt have no inheritance in their land, neither shalt thou have any part among them: I am thy part and thine inheritance among the children of Israel.
Then the LORD said to Aaron, “You will have no inheritance in their land, nor will you have any portion among them. I am your portion and your inheritance among the Israelites.
Neither must the children of Israel henceforth come
nigh the tabernacle of the congregation, lest they bear sin, and die.
No longer may the
Israelites come near to the Tent of Meeting, or they will
incur guilt and die.
But the Levites shall do the service of the tabernacle of the congregation, and they shall bear their iniquity: it shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations, that among the children of Israel they have no inheritance.
The Levites are to perform the work of the Tent of Meeting, and they must bear their iniquity. This is a permanent statute for the generations to come. The Levites will not receive an inheritance among the Israelites.
But the
tithes of the children of Israel, which they offer as an
heave offering unto the LORD, I have given to the Levites to
inherit: therefore I have said unto them, Among the children of Israel they shall have no inheritance.
For I have given to the Levites as their inheritance the
tithe that the
Israelites present to the LORD as a contribution. That is why I told them that they would not receive an inheritance among the
Israelites.”
Thus speak unto the Levites, and say unto them, When ye take of the children of Israel the
tithes which I have given you from them for your inheritance, then ye shall offer up an
heave offering of it for the LORD, even a tenth part of the
tithe.
“Speak to the Levites and tell them: ‘When you receive from the
Israelites the
tithe that I have given you as your inheritance, you must present part of it as an offering to the LORD—a
tithe of the
tithe.
Thus ye also shall offer an
heave offering unto the LORD of all your
tithes, which ye receive of the children of Israel; and ye shall give thereof the LORD’S
heave offering to Aaron the priest.
So you are to present an offering to the LORD from all the
tithes you receive from the
Israelites, and from these you are to give the LORD’s offering to Aaron the priest.
And ye shall bear no sin by reason of it, when ye have
heaved from it the best of it: neither shall ye
pollute the holy things of the children of Israel, lest ye die.
Once you have presented the best part of it, you will not
incur guilt because of it. But you must not
defile the sacred offerings of the
Israelites, or else you will die.’”
This is the
ordinance of the law which the LORD hath commanded, saying, Speak unto the children of Israel, that they bring thee a red
heifer without spot, wherein is no
blemish, and upon which never came yoke:
“This is the statute of the law that the LORD has commanded:
Instruct the
Israelites to bring you an
unblemished red
heifer that has no defect and has never been placed under a yoke.
And he that gathereth the ashes of the
heifer shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even: and it shall be unto the children of Israel, and unto the stranger that sojourneth among them, for a statute for ever.
The man who has gathered up the ashes of the
heifer must also wash his clothes, and he will be
ceremonially unclean until evening. This is a permanent statute for the
Israelites and for the foreigner residing among them.
And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron, Because ye believed me not, to
sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them.
But the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, “Because you did not trust Me to show My
holiness in the sight of the
Israelites, you will not bring this assembly into the land that I have given them.”
This is the water of Meribah; because the children of Israel
strove with the LORD, and he was
sanctified in them.
These were the waters of Meribah, where the
Israelites quarreled with the LORD, and He showed His
holiness among them.
And the children of Israel said unto him, We will go by the high way: and if I and my cattle drink of thy water, then I will pay for it: I will only, without doing any thing else, go through on my feet.
“We will stay on the main road,” the Israelites replied, “and if we or our herds drink your water, we will pay for it. There will be no problem; only let us pass through on foot.”
And he said, Thou shalt not go through. And
Edom came out against him with much people, and with a strong hand.
But
Edom insisted, “You may not pass through.” And they came out to
confront the
Israelites with a large army and a strong hand.
Aaron shall be gathered unto his people: for he shall not enter into the land which I have given unto the children of Israel, because ye rebelled against my word at the water of Meribah.
“Aaron will be gathered to his people; he will not enter the land that I have given the Israelites, because both of you rebelled against My command at the waters of Meribah.
And the LORD sent
fiery serpents among the people, and they
bit the people; and much people of Israel died.
So the LORD sent
venomous snakes among the people, and many of the
Israelites were
bitten and died.
And the children of Israel set forward, and pitched in Oboth.
Then the Israelites set out and camped at Oboth.
The princes
digged the well, the nobles of the people
digged it, by the direction of the
lawgiver, with their
staves. And from the wilderness they went to Mattanah:
The princes
dug the well; the nobles of the people hollowed it out with their scepters and with their staffs.” From the wilderness the
Israelites went on to Mattanah,
And the children of Israel set forward, and pitched in the plains of Moab on this side Jordan by
Jericho.
Then the
Israelites traveled on and camped in the plains of Moab near the Jordan, across from
Jericho.
And Moab was
sore afraid of the people, because they were many: and Moab was distressed because of the children of Israel.
and Moab was
terrified of the people because they were numerous. Indeed, Moab
dreaded the
Israelites.
And he went after the man of Israel into the tent, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her
belly. So the plague was stayed from the children of Israel.
followed the
Israelite into his tent, and drove the
spear through both of them—through the
Israelite and on through the
belly of the woman. So the plague against the
Israelites was
halted,
Phinehas, the son of
Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, while he was
zealous for my sake among them, that I consumed not the children of Israel in my jealousy.
“
Phinehas son of
Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has turned My wrath away from the
Israelites; for he was
zealous for My sake among them, so that I did not
consume the
Israelites in My zeal.
And he shall have it, and his seed after him, even the covenant of an
everlasting priesthood; because he was
zealous for his God, and made an
atonement for the children of Israel.
It will be a covenant of permanent priesthood for him and his descendants, because he was
zealous for his God and made
atonement for the
Israelites.”
Take the sum of the people, from twenty years old and upward; as the LORD commanded Moses and the children of Israel, which went forth out of the land of Egypt.
“Take a census of the men twenty years of age or older, as the LORD has commanded Moses.” And these were the Israelites who came out of the land of Egypt:
And those that were numbered of them were twenty and three thousand, all males from a month old and upward: for they were not numbered among the children of Israel, because there was no inheritance given them among the children of Israel.
The
registration of the Levites totaled 23,000, every male a month old or more; they were not numbered among the other
Israelites, because no inheritance was given to them among the
Israelites.
These are they that were numbered by Moses and
Eleazar the priest, who numbered the children of Israel in the plains of Moab by Jordan near
Jericho.
These were the ones numbered by Moses and
Eleazar the priest when they counted the
Israelites on the plains of Moab by the Jordan, across from
Jericho.
But among these there was not a man of them whom Moses and Aaron the priest numbered, when they numbered the children of Israel in the wilderness of
Sinai.
Among all these, however, there was not one who had been numbered by Moses and Aaron the priest when they counted the
Israelites in the Wilderness of
Sinai.
And thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel, saying, If a man die, and have no son, then ye shall cause his inheritance to pass unto his daughter.
Furthermore, you shall say to the
Israelites, ‘If a man dies and leaves no son, you are to transfer his inheritance to his daughter.
And if his father have no brethren, then ye shall give his inheritance unto his
kinsman that is next to him of his family, and he shall possess it: and it shall be unto the children of Israel a statute of judgment, as the LORD commanded Moses.
And if his father has no brothers, give his inheritance to the next of
kin from his clan, that he may take possession of it. This is to be a
statutory ordinance for the
Israelites, as the LORD has commanded Moses.’”
And the LORD said unto Moses, Get thee up into this mount Abarim, and see the land which I have given unto the children of Israel.
Then the LORD said to Moses, “Go up this mountain of the Abarim range and see the land that I have given the Israelites.
And he shall stand before
Eleazar the priest, who shall ask counsel for him after the judgment of
Urim before the LORD: at his word shall they go out, and at his word they shall come in, both he, and all the children of Israel with him, even all the congregation.
He shall stand before
Eleazar the priest, who will seek counsel for him before the LORD by the judgment of the
Urim. At his command, he and all the
Israelites with him—the entire congregation—will go out and come in.”
Command the children of Israel, and say unto them, My offering, and my bread for my sacrifices made by fire, for a sweet savour unto me, shall ye observe to offer unto me in their due season.
“Command the
Israelites and say to them: See that you present to Me at its appointed time the food for My offerings by fire, as a pleasing
aroma to Me.
And Moses told the children of Israel according to all that the LORD commanded Moses.
So Moses spoke all this to the Israelites just as the LORD had commanded him.
Avenge the children of Israel of the Midianites: afterward shalt thou be gathered unto thy people.
“Take
vengeance on the Midianites for the
Israelites. After that, you will be gathered to your people.”
And the children of Israel took all the women of
Midian captives, and their little ones, and took the
spoil of all their cattle, and all their flocks, and all their goods.
The
Israelites captured the Midianite women and their children, and they
plundered all their herds, flocks, and goods.
And of the children of Israel’s half, thou shalt take one portion of fifty, of the persons, of the
beeves, of the
asses, and of the flocks, of all manner of beasts, and give them unto the Levites, which keep the charge of the tabernacle of the LORD.
From the
Israelites’ half, take one out of every fifty, whether persons, cattle,
donkeys, sheep, or other animals, and give them to the Levites who keep charge of the tabernacle of the LORD.”
And of the children of Israel’s half, which Moses divided from the men that
warred,
From the Israelites’ half, which Moses had set apart from the men who had gone to war,
Even of the children of Israel’s half, Moses took one portion of fifty, both of man and of beast, and gave them unto the Levites, which kept the charge of the tabernacle of the LORD; as the LORD commanded Moses.
From the Israelites’ half, Moses took one out of every fifty persons and animals and gave them to the Levites who kept charge of the tabernacle of the LORD, as the LORD had commanded him.
And Moses and
Eleazar the priest took the gold of the captains of thousands and of hundreds, and brought it into the tabernacle of the congregation, for a
memorial for the children of Israel before the LORD.
And Moses and
Eleazar the priest received the gold from the commanders of thousands and of hundreds and brought it into the Tent of Meeting as a
memorial for the
Israelites before the LORD.
And wherefore discourage ye the heart of the children of Israel from going over into the land which the LORD hath given them?
Why are you discouraging the Israelites from crossing into the land that the LORD has given them?
For when they went up unto the valley of
Eshcol, and saw the land, they discouraged the heart of the children of Israel, that they should not go into the land which the LORD had given them.
For when your fathers went up to the Valley of
Eshcol and saw the land, they discouraged the
Israelites from entering the land that the LORD had given them.
But we ourselves will go ready armed before the children of Israel, until we have brought them unto their place: and our little ones shall dwell in the
fenced cities because of the inhabitants of the land.
But we will arm ourselves and be ready to go
ahead of the
Israelites until we have brought them into their place. Meanwhile, our little ones will remain in the fortified cities for protection from the inhabitants of the land.
These are the journeys of the children of Israel, which went forth out of the land of Egypt with their armies under the hand of Moses and Aaron.
These are the journeys of the
Israelites when they came out of the land of Egypt by their divisions under the
leadership of Moses and Aaron.
And they departed from
Rameses in the first month, on the
fifteenth day of the first month; on the
morrow after the
passover the children of Israel went out with an high hand in the sight of all the Egyptians.
On the
fifteenth day of the first month, on the day after the
Passover, the
Israelites set out from
Rameses. They marched out defiantly in full view of all the Egyptians,
And the children of Israel removed from
Rameses, and pitched in Succoth.
The
Israelites set out from
Rameses and camped at Succoth.
And Aaron the priest went up into mount
Hor at the commandment of the LORD, and died there, in the
fortieth year after the children of Israel were come out of the land of Egypt, in the first day of the fifth month.
At the LORD’s command, Aaron the priest
climbed Mount
Hor and died there on the first day of the fifth month, in the
fortieth year after the
Israelites had come out of the land of Egypt.
And king
Arad the
Canaanite, which dwelt in the south in the land of
Canaan, heard of the coming of the children of Israel.
Now the
Canaanite king of
Arad, who lived in the Negev in the land of
Canaan, heard that the
Israelites were coming.
And they departed from mount
Hor, and pitched in Zalmonah.
And the
Israelites set out from Mount
Hor and camped at Zalmonah.
Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When ye are passed over Jordan into the land of
Canaan;
“Speak to the
Israelites and tell them: When you cross the Jordan into the land of
Canaan,
Command the children of Israel, and say unto them, When ye come into the land of
Canaan; (this is the land that shall fall unto you for an inheritance, even the land of
Canaan with the coasts thereof:)
“Command the
Israelites and say to them: When you enter the land of
Canaan, it will be
allotted to you as an inheritance with these boundaries:
And Moses commanded the children of Israel, saying, This is the land which ye shall
inherit by lot, which the LORD commanded to give unto the nine tribes, and to the half tribe:
So Moses commanded the
Israelites, “
Apportion this land by lot as an inheritance. The LORD has commanded that it be given to the nine and a half tribes.
These are they whom the LORD commanded to divide the inheritance unto the children of Israel in the land of
Canaan.
These are the ones whom the LORD commanded to
apportion the inheritance to the
Israelites in the land of
Canaan.
Command the children of Israel, that they give unto the Levites of the inheritance of their possession cities to dwell in; and ye shall give also unto the Levites suburbs for the cities round about them.
“Command the Israelites to give, from the inheritance they will possess, cities for the Levites to live in and pasturelands around the cities.
And the cities which ye shall give shall be of the possession of the children of Israel: from them that have many ye shall give many; but from them that have few ye shall give few: every one shall give of his cities unto the Levites according to his inheritance which he inheriteth.
The cities that you
apportion from the territory of the
Israelites should be given to the Levites in proportion to the inheritance of each tribe: more from a larger tribe and less from a smaller one.”
Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When ye be come over Jordan into the land of
Canaan;
“Speak to the
Israelites and tell them: When you cross the Jordan into the land of
Canaan,
These six cities shall be a refuge, both for the children of Israel, and for the stranger, and for the
sojourner among them: that every one that killeth any person unawares may
flee thither.
These six cities will serve as a refuge for the
Israelites and for the foreigner or stranger among them, so that
anyone who kills a person
unintentionally may
flee there.
Defile not therefore the land which ye shall inhabit, wherein I dwell: for I the LORD dwell among the children of Israel.
Do not
defile the land where you live and where I dwell. For I, the LORD, dwell among the
Israelites.”
And they said, The LORD commanded my lord to give the land for an inheritance by lot to the children of Israel: and my lord was commanded by the LORD to give the inheritance of Zelophehad our brother unto his daughters.
saying, “When the LORD commanded my lord to give the land as an inheritance to the Israelites by lot, He also commanded him to give the inheritance of our brother Zelophehad to his daughters.
And when the jubile of the children of Israel shall be, then shall their inheritance be put unto the inheritance of the tribe
whereunto they are received: so shall their inheritance be taken away from the inheritance of the tribe of our fathers.
And when the
Jubilee for the
Israelites comes, their inheritance will be added to the tribe into which they marry and taken away from the tribe of our fathers.”
And Moses commanded the children of Israel according to the word of the LORD, saying, The tribe of the sons of Joseph hath said well.
So at the word of the LORD, Moses commanded the Israelites: “The tribe of the sons of Joseph speaks correctly.
So shall not the inheritance of the children of Israel remove from tribe to tribe: for every one of the children of Israel shall keep himself to the inheritance of the tribe of his fathers.
No inheritance in Israel may be transferred from tribe to tribe, because each of the Israelites is to retain the inheritance of the tribe of his fathers.
These are the commandments and the judgments, which the LORD commanded by the hand of Moses unto the children of Israel in the plains of Moab by Jordan near
Jericho.
These are the commandments and ordinances that the LORD gave the
Israelites through Moses on the plains of Moab by the Jordan across from
Jericho.
And it came to pass in the
fortieth year, in the
eleventh month, on the first day of the month, that Moses spake unto the children of Israel, according unto all that the LORD had given him in commandment unto them;
In the
fortieth year, on the first day of the
eleventh month, Moses proclaimed to the
Israelites all that the LORD had commanded him concerning them.
And I commanded you at that time, saying, The LORD your God hath given you this land to possess it: ye shall pass over armed before your brethren the children of Israel, all that are meet for the war.
At that time I commanded you: “The LORD your God has given you this land to possess. All your men of
valor are to cross over, armed for battle,
ahead of your brothers, the
Israelites.
And this is the law which Moses set before the children of Israel:
This is the law that Moses set before the Israelites.
On this side Jordan, in the valley over against Beth-peor, in the land of Sihon king of the
Amorites, who dwelt at
Heshbon, whom Moses and the children of Israel
smote, after they were come forth out of Egypt:
while they were in the valley across the Jordan facing Beth-peor in the land of Sihon king of the
Amorites, who lived in
Heshbon and was defeated by Moses and the
Israelites after they had come out of Egypt.
And the children of Israel took their journey from Beeroth of the children of Jaakan to Mosera: there Aaron died, and there he was buried; and
Eleazar his son ministered in the priest’s office in his
stead.
The
Israelites traveled from Beeroth
Bene-jaakan to Moserah, where Aaron died and was buried, and
Eleazar his son succeeded him as priest.
And what he did unto Dathan and
Abiram, the sons of Eliab, the son of
Reuben: how the earth opened her mouth, and
swallowed them up, and their households, and their tents, and all the substance that was in their possession, in the midst of all Israel:
and what He did in the midst of all the
Israelites to Dathan and
Abiram, the sons of Eliab the Reubenite, when the earth opened its mouth and
swallowed them, their households, their tents, and every living thing that belonged to them.
These are the words of the covenant, which the LORD commanded Moses to make with the children of Israel in the land of Moab, beside the covenant which he made with them in
Horeb.
These are the words of the covenant that the LORD commanded Moses to make with the
Israelites in the land of Moab, in addition to the covenant He had made with them at
Horeb.
Now therefore write ye this song for you, and teach it the children of Israel: put it in their mouths, that this song may be a witness for me against the children of Israel.
Now therefore, write down for
yourselves this song and teach it to the
Israelites; have them
recite it, so that it may be a witness for Me against them.
Moses therefore wrote this song the same day, and taught it the children of Israel.
So that very day Moses wrote down this song and taught it to the Israelites.
And he gave Joshua the son of
Nun a charge, and said, Be strong and of a good courage: for thou shalt bring the children of Israel into the land which I
sware unto them: and I will be with thee.
Then the LORD commissioned Joshua son of
Nun and said, “Be strong and
courageous, for you will bring the
Israelites into the land that I
swore to give them, and I will be with you.”
Get thee up into this mountain Abarim, unto mount
Nebo, which is in the land of Moab, that is over against
Jericho; and behold the land of
Canaan, which I give unto the children of Israel for a possession:
“Go up into the Abarim Range to Mount
Nebo, in the land of Moab across from
Jericho, and view the land of
Canaan, which I am giving to the
Israelites as their own possession.
Because ye
trespassed against me among the children of Israel at the waters of Meribah-Kadesh, in the wilderness of Zin; because ye
sanctified me not in the midst of the children of Israel.
For at the waters of Meribah-kadesh in the Wilderness of Zin, both of you broke faith with Me among the Israelites by failing to treat Me as holy in their presence.
Yet thou shalt see the land before thee; but thou shalt not go thither unto the land which I give the children of Israel.
Although you shall see from a distance the land that I am giving the Israelites, you shall not enter it.”
And this is the blessing,
wherewith Moses the man of God blessed the children of Israel before his death.
This is the blessing that Moses the man of God pronounced upon the Israelites before his death.
And the children of Israel
wept for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days: so the days of
weeping and
mourning for Moses were ended.
The
Israelites grieved for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days, until the time of
weeping and
mourning for Moses came to an end.
And Joshua the son of
Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom; for Moses had laid his hands upon him: and the children of Israel
hearkened unto him, and did as the LORD commanded Moses.
Now Joshua son of
Nun was filled with the spirit of wisdom because Moses had laid his hands on him. So the
Israelites obeyed him and did as the LORD had commanded Moses.
And Joshua rose early in the morning; and they removed from
Shittim, and came to Jordan, he and all the children of Israel, and
lodged there before they passed over.
Early the next morning Joshua got up and left
Shittim with all the
Israelites. They went as far as the Jordan, where they camped before crossing over.
And Joshua said unto the children of Israel, Come
hither, and hear the words of the LORD your God.
So Joshua told the
Israelites, “Come here and
listen to the words of the LORD your God.”
And the priests that bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD stood firm on dry ground in the midst of Jordan, and all the Israelites passed over on dry ground, until all the people were passed clean over Jordan.
The priests carrying the ark of the covenant of the LORD stood firm on dry ground in the middle of the Jordan, while all Israel crossed over the dry ground, until the entire nation had crossed the Jordan.
Then Joshua called the twelve men, whom he had prepared of the children of Israel, out of every tribe a man:
So Joshua summoned the twelve men he had appointed from the Israelites, one from each tribe,
Then ye shall answer them, That the waters of Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the LORD; when it passed over Jordan, the waters of Jordan were cut off: and these stones shall be for a
memorial unto the children of Israel for ever.
you are to tell them, ‘The waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the LORD. When it crossed the Jordan, the waters were cut off.’ Therefore these stones will be a
memorial to the
Israelites forever.”
And the children of Israel did so as Joshua commanded, and took up twelve stones out of the midst of Jordan, as the LORD spake unto Joshua, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel, and carried them over with them unto the place where they
lodged, and laid them down there.
Thus the Israelites did as Joshua had commanded them. They took up twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan, one for each tribe of Israel, just as the LORD had told Joshua; and they carried them to the camp, where they set them down.
And the children of
Reuben, and the children of
Gad, and half the tribe of
Manasseh, passed over armed before the children of Israel, as Moses spake unto them:
The Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of
Manasseh crossed over before the
Israelites, armed for battle as Moses had
instructed them.
And he spake unto the children of Israel, saying, When your children shall ask their fathers in time to come, saying, What mean these stones?
Then Joshua said to the Israelites, “In the future, when your children ask their fathers, ‘What is the meaning of these stones?’
And it came to pass, when all the kings of the
Amorites, which were on the side of Jordan westward, and all the kings of the
Canaanites, which were by the sea, heard that the LORD had dried up the waters of Jordan from before the children of Israel, until we were passed over, that their heart melted, neither was there spirit in them any more, because of the children of Israel.
Now when all the Amorite kings west of the Jordan and all the
Canaanite kings along the coast heard how the LORD had dried up the waters of the Jordan before the
Israelites until they had crossed over, their hearts melted and their spirits failed for fear of the
Israelites.
For the children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness, till all the people that were men of war, which came out of Egypt, were consumed, because they obeyed not the voice of the LORD: unto whom the LORD
sware that he would not
shew them the land, which the LORD
sware unto their fathers that he would give us, a land that floweth with milk and honey.
For the
Israelites had
wandered in the wilderness forty years, until all the nation’s men of war who had come out of Egypt had died, since they did not obey the LORD. So the LORD
vowed never to let them see the land He had
sworn to their fathers to give us, a land flowing with milk and honey.
