And if thy brother be not nigh unto thee, or if thou know him not, then thou shalt bring it unto thine own house, and it shall be with thee until thy brother seek after it, and thou shalt restore it to him again.
If your brother does not live near you, or if you do not know who he is, you are to take the animal home to remain with you until your brother comes seeking it; then you can return it to him.
If there be among you any man, that is not clean by reason of uncleanness that chanceth him by night, then shall he go abroad out of the camp, he shall not come within the camp:
If any man among you becomes unclean because of a
nocturnal emission, he must leave the camp and stay outside.
And thy life shall
hang in doubt before thee; and thou shalt fear day and
night, and shalt have none assurance of thy life:
So your life will
hang in doubt before you, and you will be afraid
night and day, never certain of
survival.
But the word is very nigh unto thee, in thy mouth, and in thy heart, that thou mayest do it.
But the word is very near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart, so that you may obey it.
This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt
meditate therein day and
night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.
This Book of the Law must not depart from your mouth;
meditate on it day and
night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. For then you will
prosper and succeed in all you do.
And it was told the king of
Jericho, saying, Behold, there came men in
hither to
night of the children of Israel to search out the country.
And it was reported to the king of
Jericho: “Behold, some men of Israel have come here
tonight to
spy out the land.”
And before they were laid down, she came up unto them upon the roof;
Before the
spies lay down for the
night,
Rahab went up on the roof
And command ye them, saying, Take you hence out of the midst of Jordan, out of the place where the priests’ feet stood firm, twelve stones, and ye shall carry them over with you, and leave them in the
lodging place, where ye shall
lodge this
night.
and command them: ‘Take up for
yourselves twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan where the priests were standing, carry them with you, and set them down in the place where you
spend the
night.’”
So the ark of the LORD compassed the city, going about it once: and they came into the camp, and
lodged in the camp.
So he had the ark of the LORD carried around the city, circling it once. And the people returned to the camp and spent the night there.
So Joshua arose, and all the people of war, to go up against
Ai: and Joshua chose out thirty thousand mighty men of valour, and sent them away by
night.
So Joshua and the whole army set out to attack
Ai. Joshua chose 30,000 mighty men of
valor and sent them out at
night Joshua therefore sent them forth: and they went to lie in
ambush, and abode between
Bethel and
Ai, on the west side of
Ai: but Joshua
lodged that
night among the people.
So Joshua sent them out, and they went to the place of
ambush and lay in wait between
Bethel and
Ai, to the west of
Ai. But Joshua spent that
night among the people.
And all the people, even the people of war that were with him, went up, and drew
nigh, and came before the city, and pitched on the north side of
Ai: now there was a valley between them and
Ai.
Then all the troops who were with him marched up and approached the city. They arrived in front of
Ai and camped to the north of it, with the valley between them and the city.
And when they had set the people, even all the host that was on the north of the city, and their liers in wait on the west of the city, Joshua went that night into the midst of the valley.
So the forces were stationed with the main camp to the north of the city and the rear guard to the west of the city. And that night Joshua went into the valley.
Joshua therefore came unto them suddenly, and went up from
Gilgal all
night.
After marching all
night from
Gilgal, Joshua caught them by surprise.
And it came to pass the same
night, that the LORD said unto him, Take thy father’s young
bullock, even the second
bullock of seven years old, and throw down the altar of
Baal that thy father hath, and cut down the
grove that is by it:
On that very
night the LORD said to
Gideon, “Take your father’s young bull and a second bull seven years old,
tear down your father’s altar to
Baal, and cut down the Asherah pole beside it.
Then
Gideon took ten men of his servants, and did as the LORD had said unto him: and so it was, because he feared his father’s household, and the men of the city, that he could not do it by day, that he did it by
night.
So
Gideon took ten of his servants and did as the LORD had told him. But because he was too afraid of his father’s household and the men of the city, he did it by
night rather than in the
daytime.
And God did so that
night: for it was dry upon the
fleece only, and there was
dew on all the ground.
And that
night God did so. Only the
fleece was dry, and
dew covered the ground.
And it came to pass the same night, that the LORD said unto him, Arise, get thee down unto the host; for I have delivered it into thine hand.
That
night the LORD said to
Gideon, “Get up and go down against the camp, for I have delivered it into your hand.
Now therefore up by night, thou and the people that is with thee, and lie in wait in the field:
Now then,
tonight you and the people with you are to come and lie in wait in the fields.
And
Abimelech rose up, and all the people that were with him, by
night, and they laid wait against
Shechem in four companies.
So
Abimelech and all his troops set out by
night and lay in wait against
Shechem in four companies.
And it was told the Gazites, saying,
Samson is come
hither. And they compassed him in, and laid wait for him all
night in the gate of the city, and were quiet all the
night, saying, In the morning, when it is day, we shall kill him.
When the Gazites heard that
Samson was there, they surrounded that place and lay in wait for him all
night at the city gate. They were quiet throughout the
night, saying, “Let us wait until
dawn; then we will kill him.”
And the children of
Dan sent of their family five men from their coasts, men of valour, from Zorah, and from Eshtaol, to
spy out the land, and to search it; and they said unto them, Go, search the land: who when they came to mount Ephraim, to the house of
Micah, they
lodged there.
So the Danites sent out five men from their clans, men of
valor from Zorah and Eshtaol, to
spy out the land and
explore it. “Go and
explore the land,” they told them. The men entered the hill country of Ephraim and came to the house of
Micah, where they spent the
night.
And they sat down, and did eat and drink both of them together: for the
damsel’s father had said unto the man, Be content, I pray thee, and
tarry all
night, and let thine heart be
merry.
So they sat down and the two of them
ate and
drank together. Then the
girl’s father said to the man, “Please agree to stay overnight and let your heart be
merry.”
And when the man rose up to depart, his father in law urged him: therefore he
lodged there again.
The man got up to depart, but his father-in-law persuaded him, so he stayed there that night.
And when the man rose up to depart, he, and his
concubine, and his servant, his father in law, the
damsel’s father, said unto him, Behold, now the day draweth toward evening, I pray you
tarry all
night: behold, the day groweth to an end,
lodge here, that thine heart may be
merry; and to
morrow get you early on your way, that thou mayest go home.
When the man got up to depart with his
concubine and his servant, his father-in-law, the
girl’s father, said to him, “Look, the day is drawing to a close. Please
spend the
night. See, the day is almost over.
Spend the
night here, that your heart may be
merry. Then you can get up early
tomorrow for your journey home.”
But the man would not
tarry that
night, but he rose up and departed, and came over against
Jebus, which is Jerusalem; and there were with him two
asses saddled, his
concubine also was with him.
But the man was unwilling to
spend the
night. He got up and departed, and arrived opposite
Jebus (that is, Jerusalem), with his two
saddled donkeys and his
concubine.
And when they were by
Jebus, the day was far spent; and the servant said unto his master, Come, I pray thee, and let us turn in into this city of the Jebusites, and
lodge in it.
When they were near
Jebus and the day was almost gone, the servant said to his master, “Please, let us stop at this Jebusite city and
spend the
night here.”
And he said unto his servant, Come, and let us draw near to one of these places to
lodge all
night, in Gibeah, or in
Ramah.
He continued, “Come, let us try to reach one of these towns to
spend the
night in Gibeah or
Ramah.”
And they turned aside thither, to go in and to
lodge in Gibeah: and when he went in, he sat him down in a street of the city: for there was no man that took them into his house to
lodging.
They stopped to go in and
lodge in Gibeah. The
Levite went in and sat down in the city square, but no one would take them into his home for the
night.
And the old man said, Peace be with thee;
howsoever let all thy wants lie upon me; only
lodge not in the street.
“Peace to you,” said the old man. “Let me supply everything you need. Only do not
spend the
night in the square.”
But the men would not
hearken to him: so the man took his
concubine, and brought her forth unto them; and they knew her, and
abused her all the
night until the morning: and when the day began to spring, they let her go.
But the men would not
listen to him. So the
Levite took his
concubine and sent her outside to them, and they raped her and
abused her throughout the
night, and at
dawn they let her go.
And the
Levite, the husband of the woman that was slain, answered and said, I came into Gibeah that belongeth to Benjamin, I and my
concubine, to
lodge.
So the
Levite, the husband of the murdered woman, answered: “I and my
concubine came to Gibeah in Benjamin to
spend the
night.
And the men of Gibeah rose against me, and
beset the house round about upon me by
night, and thought to have slain me: and my
concubine have they forced, that she is dead.
And during the
night, the men of Gibeah rose up against me and surrounded the house. They intended to kill me, but they
abused my
concubine, and she died.
Turn again, my daughters, go your way; for I am too old to have an husband. If I should say, I have hope, if I should have an husband also to night, and should also bear sons;
Return home, my daughters. Go on, for I am too old to have another husband. Even if I thought there was hope for me to have a husband
tonight and to bear sons,
And now is not Boaz of our kindred, with whose maidens thou
wast? Behold, he winnoweth barley to
night in the threshingfloor.
Now is not Boaz, with whose servant girls you have been working, a relative of ours? In fact,
tonight he is
winnowing barley on the
threshing floor.
Tarry this
night, and it shall be in the morning, that if he will perform unto thee the part of a
kinsman, well; let him do the
kinsman’s part: but if he will not do the part of a
kinsman to thee, then will I do the part of a
kinsman to thee, as the LORD liveth: lie down until the morning.
Stay here
tonight, and in the morning, if he wants to
redeem you, good. Let him
redeem you. But if he does not want to
redeem you, as surely as the LORD lives, I will. Now lie here until morning.”
And Saul said,
Disperse yourselves among the people, and say unto them, Bring me
hither every man his ox, and every man his sheep, and
slay them here, and eat; and sin not against the LORD in eating with the blood. And all the people brought every man his ox with him that
night, and
slew them there.
Then he said, “Go among the troops and tell them, ‘Each man must bring me his ox or his sheep, slaughter them in this place, and then eat. Do not sin against the LORD by eating meat with the blood still in it.’” So that
night everyone brought his ox and slaughtered it there.
And Saul said, Let us go down after the Philistines by
night, and
spoil them until the morning light, and let us not leave a man of them. And they said, Do
whatsoever seemeth good unto thee. Then said the priest, Let us draw near
hither unto God.
And Saul said, “Let us go down after the Philistines by
night and
plunder them until
dawn, leaving no man alive!” “Do what seems good to you,” the troops replied. But the priest said, “We must
consult God here.”
It repenteth me that I have set up Saul to be king: for he is turned back from following me, and hath not performed my commandments. And it
grieved Samuel; and he
cried unto the LORD all
night.
“I
regret that I have made Saul king, for he has turned away from following Me and has not carried out My instructions.” And Samuel was distressed and
cried out to the LORD all that
night.
Then Samuel said unto Saul, Stay, and I will tell thee what the LORD hath said to me this night. And he said unto him, Say on.
“Stop!”
exclaimed Samuel. “Let me tell you what the LORD said to me last
night.” “Tell me,” Saul replied.
And it came to pass, when the
Philistine arose, and came and drew
nigh to meet David, that David hasted, and ran toward the army to meet the
Philistine.
As the
Philistine started forward to attack him, David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet him.
And Saul sought to
smite David even to the wall with the
javelin; but he
slipped away out of Saul’s presence, and he
smote the
javelin into the wall: and David fled, and escaped that
night.
Saul tried to pin him to the wall with his
spear. But the
spear struck the wall and David
eluded him, ran away, and escaped that
night.
Saul also sent messengers unto David’s house, to watch him, and to
slay him in the morning: and Michal David’s wife told him, saying, If thou save not thy life to
night, to
morrow thou shalt be slain.
Then Saul sent messengers to David’s house to watch him and kill him in the morning. But David’s wife Michal
warned him, “If you do not run for your life
tonight,
tomorrow you will be dead!”
And he stript off his clothes also, and
prophesied before Samuel in like manner, and lay down naked all that day and all that
night. Wherefore they say, Is Saul also among the prophets?
Then Saul
stripped off his robes and also
prophesied before Samuel. And he
collapsed and lay naked all that day and
night. That is why it is said, “Is Saul also among the prophets?”
They were a wall unto us both by night and day, all the while we were with them keeping the sheep.
They were a wall around us, both day and
night, the whole time we were
herding our sheep near them.
So David and
Abishai came to the people by
night: and, behold, Saul lay sleeping within the
trench, and his
spear stuck in the ground at his
bolster: but
Abner and the people lay round about him.
That
night David and
Abishai came to the troops, and Saul was lying there
asleep in the inner circle of the camp, with his
spear stuck in the ground by his head. And
Abner and the troops were lying around him.
And Saul
disguised himself, and put on other
raiment, and he went, and two men with him, and they came to the woman by
night: and he said, I pray thee, divine unto me by the familiar spirit, and bring me him up, whom I shall name unto thee.
So Saul
disguised himself by putting on different clothes, and he set out with two of his men. They came to the woman at
night, and Saul said, “
Consult a spirit for me. Bring up for me the one I name.”
Then Saul fell
straightway all along on the earth, and was
sore afraid, because of the words of Samuel: and there was no strength in him; for he had eaten no bread all the day, nor all the
night.
Immediately Saul fell flat on the ground,
terrified by the words of Samuel. And his strength was gone, because he had not eaten anything all that day and
night.
And she brought it before Saul, and before his servants; and they did eat. Then they rose up, and went away that night.
She served it to Saul and his servants, and they
ate. And that
night they got up and left.
And they gave him a piece of a
cake of figs, and two clusters of
raisins: and when he had eaten, his spirit came again to him: for he had eaten no bread, nor
drunk any water, three days and three
nights.
a piece of a fig
cake and two clusters of
raisins. So he
ate and was revived, for he had not had any food or water for three days and three
nights.
All the
valiant men arose, and went all
night, and took the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons from the wall of Beth-shan, and came to
Jabesh, and burnt them there.
all their men of
valor set out, journeyed all
night, and
retrieved the bodies of Saul and his sons from the wall of Beth-shan. When they arrived at
Jabesh, they burned the bodies there.
And
Abner and his men walked all that
night through the plain, and passed over Jordan, and went through all Bithron, and they came to
Mahanaim.
And all that
night Abner and his men marched through the Arabah. They crossed the Jordan, marched all morning, and arrived at
Mahanaim.
And they took up
Asahel, and buried him in the
sepulchre of his father, which was in
Bethlehem. And
Joab and his men went all
night, and they came to
Hebron at break of day.
For when they came into the house, he lay on his bed in his
bedchamber, and they
smote him, and
slew him, and
beheaded him, and took his head, and
gat them away through the plain all
night.
They had entered the house while
Ish-bosheth was lying on his bed, and having
stabbed and killed him, they
beheaded him, took his head, and traveled all
night by way of the Arabah.
And it came to pass that
night, that the word of the LORD came unto
Nathan, saying,
But that
night the word of the LORD came to
Nathan, saying,
And
Joab drew
nigh, and the people that were with him, unto the battle against the Syrians: and they fled before him.
So
Joab and his troops advanced to fight the Arameans, who fled before him.
And if so be that the king’s wrath arise, and he say unto thee, Wherefore approached ye so nigh unto the city when ye did fight? knew ye not that they would shoot from the wall?
if the king’s anger flares, he may ask you, ‘Why did you get so close to the city to fight? Did you not
realize they would shoot from
atop the wall?
Who
smote Abimelech the son of Jerubbesheth? did not a woman cast a piece of a
millstone upon him from the wall, that he died in Thebez? why went ye
nigh the wall? then say thou, Thy servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.
Who was the one to strike
Abimelech son of Jerubbesheth? Was it not a woman who dropped an upper
millstone on him from the wall, so that he died in Thebez? Why did you get so close to the wall?’ If so, then you are to say, ‘Your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead as well.’”
David therefore
besought God for the child; and David fasted, and went in, and lay all
night upon the earth.
David
pleaded with God for the boy. He fasted and went into his house and spent the
night lying in
sackcloth on the ground.
And it was so, that when any man came
nigh to him to do him
obeisance, he put forth his hand, and took him, and
kissed him.
Also, when
anyone approached to bow down to him,
Absalom would reach out his hand, take hold of him, and
kiss him.
Moreover
Ahithophel said unto
Absalom, Let me now choose out twelve thousand men, and I will arise and pursue after David this
night:
For, said Hushai, thou knowest thy father and his men, that they be mighty men, and they be
chafed in their minds, as a bear
robbed of her whelps in the field: and thy father is a man of war, and will not
lodge with the people.
He continued, “You know your father and his men. They are mighty men, and as fierce as a wild bear
robbed of her cubs. Moreover, your father is a man of war who will not
spend the
night with the troops.
Now therefore send quickly, and tell David, saying,
Lodge not this
night in the plains of the wilderness, but speedily pass over; lest the king be
swallowed up, and all the people that are with him.
Now send quickly and tell David, ‘Do not
spend the
night at the fords of the wilderness, but be sure to cross over. Otherwise the king and all the people with him will be
swallowed up.’”
Now therefore arise, go forth, and speak
comfortably unto thy servants: for I
swear by the LORD, if thou go not forth, there will not
tarry one with thee this
night: and that will be worse unto thee than all the evil that
befell thee from thy youth until now.
Now therefore get up! Go out and speak comfort to your servants, for I
swear by the LORD that if you do not go out, not a man will remain with you
tonight. This will be worse for you than all the
adversity that has
befallen you from your youth until now!”
And Rizpah the daughter of Aiah took
sackcloth, and spread it for her upon the rock, from the beginning of harvest until water dropped upon them out of heaven, and suffered neither the birds of the air to rest on them by day, nor the beasts of the field by
night.
And Rizpah the daughter of Aiah took
sackcloth and spread it out for herself on a rock. From the beginning of the harvest until the rain from heaven poured down on the bodies, she did not allow the birds of the air to rest on them by day, nor the beasts of the field by
night.
Now the days of David drew nigh that he should die; and he charged Solomon his son, saying,
As the time drew near for David to die, he charged his son Solomon,
In
Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream by
night: and God said, Ask what I shall give thee.
One
night at
Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream, and God said, “Ask, and I will give it to you!”
And this woman’s child died in the night; because she overlaid it.
During the night this woman’s son died because she rolled over on him.
So she got up in the middle of the
night and took my son from my side while I was
asleep. She laid him in her
bosom and put her dead son at my
bosom.
That thine eyes may be open toward this house
night and day, even toward the place of which thou hast said, My name shall be there: that thou mayest
hearken unto the prayer which thy servant shall make toward this place.
May Your eyes be open toward this temple night and day, toward the place of which You said, ‘My Name shall be there,’ so that You may hear the prayer that Your servant prays toward this place.
And let these my words,
wherewith I have made
supplication before the LORD, be
nigh unto the LORD our God day and
night, that he maintain the cause of his servant, and the cause of his people Israel at all times, as the matter shall require:
And may these words with which I have made my petition before the LORD be near to the LORD our God day and
night, so that He may
uphold the cause of His servant and of His people Israel as each day requires,
And he arose, and did eat and drink, and went in the strength of that meat forty days and forty
nights unto
Horeb the mount of God.
So he got up and
ate and
drank. And strengthened by that food, he walked forty days and forty
nights until he reached
Horeb, the mountain of God.
And he came thither unto a cave, and
lodged there; and, behold, the word of the LORD came to him, and he said unto him, What doest thou here,
Elijah?
There
Elijah entered a cave and spent the
night. And the word of the LORD came to him, saying, “What are you doing here,
Elijah?”
Therefore sent he thither horses, and
chariots, and a great host: and they came by
night, and compassed the city about.
the king of
Aram sent horses,
chariots, and a great army. They went there by
night and surrounded the city.
And the king arose in the
night, and said unto his servants, I will now
shew you what the Syrians have done to us. They know that we be
hungry; therefore are they gone out of the camp to hide themselves in the field, saying, When they come out of the city, we shall catch them alive, and get into the city.
So the king got up in the
night and said to his servants, “Let me tell you what the Arameans have done to us. They know we are
starving, so they have left the camp to hide in the field, thinking, ‘When they come out of the city, we will take them alive and enter the city.’”
So
Joram went over to Zair, and all the
chariots with him: and he rose by
night, and
smote the Edomites which compassed him about, and the captains of the
chariots: and the people fled into their tents.
So Jehoram crossed over to Zair with all his
chariots. When the Edomites surrounded him and his
chariot commanders, he rose up and attacked by
night. His troops, however, fled to their homes.
And it came to pass that
night, that the angel of the LORD went out, and
smote in the camp of the Assyrians an hundred
fourscore and five thousand: and when they arose early in the morning, behold, they were all dead corpses.
And that very night the angel of the LORD went out and struck down 185,000 men in the camp of the Assyrians. When the people got up the next morning, there were all the dead bodies!
And the city was broken up, and all the men of war fled by night by the way of the gate between two walls, which is by the king’s garden: (now the Chaldees were against the city round about:) and the king went the way toward the plain.
Then the city was breached; and though the Chaldeans had surrounded the city, all the men of war fled by night by way of the gate between the two walls near the king’s garden. They headed toward the Arabah,
And they
lodged round about the house of God, because the charge was upon them, and the opening thereof every morning
pertained to them.
They would
spend the
night stationed around the house of God, because they were responsible for guarding it and opening it every morning.
And these are the singers, chief of the fathers of the Levites, who remaining in the chambers were free: for they were employed in that work day and night.
Those who were musicians, the heads of
Levite families, stayed in the temple chambers and were
exempt from other duties because they were on duty day and
night.
Moreover they that were
nigh them, even unto
Issachar and
Zebulun and
Naphtali, brought bread on
asses, and on camels, and on mules, and on oxen, and meat, meal, cakes of figs, and bunches of
raisins, and wine, and oil, and oxen, and sheep abundantly: for there was joy in Israel.
And their neighbors from as far away as
Issachar,
Zebulun, and
Naphtali came bringing food on
donkeys, camels, mules, and oxen—abundant supplies of flour, fig cakes and
raisin cakes, wine and oil, oxen and sheep. Indeed, there was joy in Israel.
And it came to pass the same
night, that the word of God came to
Nathan, saying,
But that
night the word of God came to
Nathan, saying,
So
Joab and the people that were with him drew
nigh before the Syrians unto the battle; and they fled before him.
So
Joab and his troops advanced to fight the Arameans, who fled before him.
In that night did God appear unto Solomon, and said unto him, Ask what I shall give thee.
That night God appeared to Solomon and said, “Ask, and I will give it to you!”
That thine eyes may be open upon this house day and
night, upon the place
whereof thou hast said that thou wouldest put thy name there; to
hearken unto the prayer which thy servant prayeth toward this place.
May Your eyes be open toward this temple day and night, toward the place where You said You would put Your Name, so that You may hear the prayer that Your servant prays toward this place.
And the LORD appeared to Solomon by night, and said unto him, I have heard thy prayer, and have chosen this place to myself for an house of sacrifice.
the LORD appeared to him at night and said to him: “I have heard your prayer and have chosen this place for Myself as a house of sacrifice.
Then Jehoram went forth with his princes, and all his
chariots with him: and he rose up by
night, and
smote the Edomites which compassed him in, and the captains of the
chariots.
So Jehoram crossed into
Edom with his officers and all his
chariots. When the Edomites surrounded him and his
chariot commanders, he rose up and attacked by
night.
And afterward they made ready for themselves, and for the priests: because the priests the sons of Aaron were
busied in offering of burnt offerings and the fat until
night; therefore the Levites prepared for themselves, and for the priests the sons of Aaron.
Afterward, they made preparations for themselves and for the priests, since the priests, the descendants of Aaron, were offering up burnt offerings and fat until
nightfall. So the Levites made preparations for themselves and for the priests, the descendants of Aaron.
Let thine ear now be
attentive, and thine eyes open, that thou mayest hear the prayer of thy servant, which I pray before thee now, day and
night, for the children of Israel thy servants, and
confess the sins of the children of Israel, which we have
sinned against thee: both I and my father’s house have
sinned.
let Your eyes be open and Your ears
attentive to hear the prayer that I, Your servant, now pray before You day and
night for Your servants, the Israelites. I
confess the sins that we Israelites have committed against You. Both I and my father’s house have
sinned.
And I arose in the
night, I and some few men with me; neither told I any man what my God had put in my heart to do at Jerusalem: neither was there any beast with me, save the beast that I
rode upon.
I set out at
night with a few men. I did not tell
anyone what my God had laid on my heart to do for Jerusalem. The only animal with me was the one on which I was riding.
And I went out by
night by the gate of the valley, even before the
dragon well, and to the dung port, and viewed the walls of Jerusalem, which were broken down, and the gates thereof were consumed with fire.
So I went out at
night through the Valley Gate toward the Well of the Serpent and the Dung Gate, and I
inspected the walls of Jerusalem that had been broken down and the gates that had been destroyed by fire.
Then went I up in the
night by the
brook, and viewed the wall, and turned back, and entered by the gate of the valley, and so returned.
so I went up the valley by
night and
inspected the wall. Then I headed back and reentered through the Valley Gate.
Nevertheless we made our prayer unto our God, and set a watch against them day and night, because of them.
So we prayed to our God and posted a guard against them day and night.
Likewise at the same time said I unto the people, Let every one with his servant
lodge within Jerusalem, that in the
night they may be a guard to us, and labour on the day.
At that time I also said to the people, “Let every man and his servant
spend the
night inside Jerusalem, so that they can stand guard by
night and work by day.”
Afterward I came unto the house of Shemaiah the son of Delaiah the son of Mehetabeel, who was shut up; and he said, Let us meet together in the house of God, within the temple, and let us shut the doors of the temple: for they will come to
slay thee;
yea, in the
night will they come to
slay thee.
Later, I went to the house of Shemaiah son of Delaiah, the son of Mehetabel, who was confined to his house. He said: “Let us meet at the house of God inside the temple. Let us shut the temple doors because they are coming to kill you— by night they are coming to kill you!”
Moreover thou leddest them in the day by a
cloudy pillar; and in the
night by a
pillar of fire, to give them light in the way wherein they should go.
You led them with a
pillar of cloud by day and a
pillar of fire by
night, to light for them the way in which they should travel.
Yet thou in thy
manifold mercies forsookest them not in the wilderness: the
pillar of the cloud departed not from them by day, to lead them in the way; neither the
pillar of fire by
night, to
shew them light, and the way wherein they should go.
You in Your great
compassion did not
forsake them in the wilderness. By day the
pillar of cloud never turned away from guiding them on their path; and by the
night the
pillar of fire
illuminated the way they should go.
Go, gather together all the Jews that are present in
Shushan, and fast ye for me, and neither eat nor drink three days,
night or day: I also and my maidens will fast likewise; and so will I go in unto the king, which is not according to the law: and if I perish, I perish.
“Go and
assemble all the Jews who can be found in
Susa, and fast for me. Do not eat or drink for three days,
night or day, and I and my maidens will fast as you do. After that, I will go to the king, even though it is against the law. And if I perish, I perish!”
On that night could not the king sleep, and he commanded to bring the book of records of the chronicles; and they were read before the king.
That night sleep escaped the king; so he ordered the Book of Records, the Chronicles, to be brought in and read to him.
