And the sons of
Javan; Elishah, and
Tarshish, Kittim, and Dodanim.
And the sons of
Javan: Elishah,
Tarshish, the Kittites, and the
Rodanites.
And
Rebekah arose, and her damsels, and they
rode upon the camels, and followed the man: and the servant took
Rebekah, and went his way.
Then
Rebekah and her servant girls got ready, mounted the camels, and followed the man. So the servant took
Rebekah and left.
And Jacob took him
rods of green
poplar, and of the
hazel and
chesnut tree; and
pilled white strakes in them, and made the white appear which was in the
rods.
Jacob, however, took fresh branches of
poplar,
almond, and plane trees, and
peeled the bark,
exposing the white inner wood of the branches.
And he set the
rods which he had
pilled before the flocks in the gutters in the watering troughs when the flocks came to drink, that they should conceive when they came to drink.
Then he set the
peeled branches in the watering troughs in front of the flocks coming in to drink. So when the flocks were in heat and came to drink,
And it came to pass,
whensoever the stronger cattle did conceive, that Jacob laid the
rods before the eyes of the cattle in the gutters, that they might conceive among the
rods.
Whenever the stronger females of the flock were in heat, Jacob would place the branches in the troughs, in full view of the animals, so that they would breed in front of the branches.
And the LORD said unto him, What is that in thine hand? And he said, A rod.
And the LORD asked him, “What is that in your hand?” “A staff,” he replied.
And the LORD said unto Moses, Put forth thine hand, and take it by the tail. And he put forth his hand, and caught it, and it became a rod in his hand:
“Stretch out your hand and
grab it by the tail,” the LORD said to Moses, who reached out his hand and caught the
snake, and it turned back into a staff in his hand.
And thou shalt take this
rod in thine hand,
wherewith thou shalt do signs.
But take this staff in your hand so you can perform signs with it.”
And Moses took his wife and his sons, and set them upon an
ass, and he returned to the land of Egypt: and Moses took the
rod of God in his hand.
So Moses took his wife and sons, put them on a
donkey, and headed back to Egypt. And he took the staff of God in his hand.
When Pharaoh shall speak unto you, saying,
Shew a
miracle for you: then thou shalt say unto Aaron, Take thy
rod, and cast it before Pharaoh, and it shall become a serpent.
“When Pharaoh tells you, ‘Perform a
miracle,’ you are to say to Aaron, ‘Take your staff and throw it down before Pharaoh,’ and it will become a serpent.”
And Moses and Aaron went in unto Pharaoh, and they did so as the LORD had commanded: and Aaron cast down his rod before Pharaoh, and before his servants, and it became a serpent.
So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and did just as the LORD had commanded. Aaron threw his staff down before Pharaoh and his officials, and it became a serpent.
For they cast down every man his
rod, and they became serpents: but Aaron’s
rod swallowed up their
rods.
Each one threw down his staff, and it became a serpent. But Aaron’s staff
swallowed up the other staffs.
Get thee unto Pharaoh in the morning; lo, he goeth out unto the water; and thou shalt stand by the river’s
brink against he come; and the
rod which was turned to a serpent shalt thou take in thine hand.
Go to Pharaoh in the morning as you see him walking out to the water. Wait on the bank of the Nile to meet him, and take in your hand the staff that was changed into a
snake.
Thus saith the LORD, In this thou shalt know that I am the LORD: behold, I will
smite with the
rod that is in mine hand upon the waters which are in the river, and they shall be turned to blood.
This is what the LORD says: By this you will know that I am the LORD. Behold, with the staff in my hand I will strike the water of the Nile, and it will turn to blood.
And the LORD spake unto Moses, Say unto Aaron, Take thy rod, and stretch out thine hand upon the waters of Egypt, upon their streams, upon their rivers, and upon their ponds, and upon all their pools of water, that they may become blood; and that there may be blood throughout all the land of Egypt, both in vessels of wood, and in vessels of stone.
And the LORD said to Moses, “Tell Aaron, ‘Take your staff and stretch out your hand over the waters of Egypt—over their rivers and canals and ponds and reservoirs—that they may become blood.’ There will be blood throughout the land of Egypt, even in the vessels of wood and stone.”
And Moses and Aaron did so, as the LORD commanded; and he lifted up the
rod, and
smote the waters that were in the river, in the sight of Pharaoh, and in the sight of his servants; and all the waters that were in the river were turned to blood.
Moses and Aaron did just as the LORD had commanded; in the presence of Pharaoh and his officials, Aaron raised the staff and struck the water of the Nile, and all the water was turned to blood.
And the LORD spake unto Moses, Say unto Aaron, Stretch forth thine hand with thy rod over the streams, over the rivers, and over the ponds, and cause frogs to come up upon the land of Egypt.
And the LORD said to Moses, “Tell Aaron, ‘Stretch out your hand with your staff over the rivers and canals and ponds, and cause the frogs to come up
onto the land of Egypt.’”
And the LORD said unto Moses, Say unto Aaron, Stretch out thy
rod, and
smite the dust of the land, that it may become
lice throughout all the land of Egypt.
Then the LORD said to Moses, “Tell Aaron, ‘Stretch out your staff and strike the dust of the earth, that it may turn into swarms of gnats throughout the land of Egypt.’”
And they did so; for Aaron stretched out his hand with his
rod, and
smote the dust of the earth, and it became
lice in man, and in beast; all the dust of the land became
lice throughout all the land of Egypt.
This they did, and when Aaron stretched out his hand with his staff and struck the dust of the earth, gnats came upon man and beast. All the dust of the earth turned into gnats throughout the land of Egypt.
And Moses stretched forth his
rod toward heaven: and the LORD sent
thunder and
hail, and the fire ran along upon the ground; and the LORD rained
hail upon the land of Egypt.
So Moses stretched out his staff toward heaven, and the LORD sent
thunder and
hail, and
lightning struck the earth. So the LORD rained down
hail upon the land of Egypt.
And Moses stretched forth his rod over the land of Egypt, and the LORD brought an east wind upon the land all that day, and all that night; and when it was morning, the east wind brought the locusts.
So Moses stretched out his staff over the land of Egypt, and throughout that day and night the LORD sent an east wind across the land. By morning the east wind had brought the locusts.
But lift thou up thy rod, and stretch out thine hand over the sea, and divide it: and the children of Israel shall go on dry ground through the midst of the sea.
And as for you, lift up your staff and stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it, so that the Israelites can go through the sea on dry ground.
And the LORD said unto Moses, Go on before the people, and take with thee of the elders of Israel; and thy
rod,
wherewith thou smotest the river, take in thine hand, and go.
And the LORD said to Moses, “Walk on
ahead of the people and take some of the elders of Israel with you. Take along in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go.
And Moses said unto Joshua, Choose us out men, and go out, fight with Amalek: to
morrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the
rod of God in mine hand.
So Moses said to Joshua, “Choose some of our men and go out to fight the
Amalekites.
Tomorrow I will stand on the
hilltop with the staff of God in my hand.”
And if a man
smite his servant, or his
maid, with a
rod, and he die under his hand; he shall be surely punished.
If a man strikes his
manservant or
maidservant with a
rod, and the servant dies by his hand, he shall surely be punished.
And concerning the
tithe of the
herd, or of the flock, even of
whatsoever passeth under the
rod, the tenth shall be holy unto the LORD.
Every tenth animal from the
herd or flock that passes under the
shepherd’s
rod will be holy to the LORD.
Speak unto the children of Israel, and take of every one of them a rod according to the house of their fathers, of all their princes according to the house of their fathers twelve rods: write thou every man’s name upon his rod.
“Speak to the Israelites and take from them twelve staffs, one from the leader of each tribe. Write each man’s name on his staff,
And thou shalt write Aaron’s name upon the rod of Levi: for one rod shall be for the head of the house of their fathers.
and write Aaron’s name on the staff of Levi, because there must be one staff for the head of each tribe.
And it shall come to pass, that the man’s
rod, whom I shall choose, shall
blossom: and I will make to cease from me the murmurings of the children of Israel, whereby they
murmur against you.
The staff belonging to the man I choose will
sprout, and I will rid Myself of the constant
grumbling of the Israelites against you.”
And Moses spake unto the children of Israel, and every one of their princes gave him a
rod apiece, for each prince one, according to their fathers’ houses, even twelve
rods: and the
rod of Aaron was among their
rods.
So Moses spoke to the Israelites, and each of their leaders gave him a staff—one for each of the leaders of their tribes, twelve staffs in all. And Aaron’s staff was among them.
And Moses laid up the rods before the LORD in the tabernacle of witness.
Then Moses placed the staffs before the LORD in the Tent of the Testimony.
And it came to pass, that on the
morrow Moses went into the tabernacle of witness; and, behold, the
rod of Aaron for the house of Levi was
budded, and brought forth buds, and
bloomed blossoms, and yielded almonds.
The next day Moses entered the Tent of the Testimony and saw that Aaron’s staff, representing the house of Levi, had
sprouted, put forth buds,
blossomed, and produced almonds.
And Moses brought out all the rods from before the LORD unto all the children of Israel: and they looked, and took every man his rod.
Then Moses brought out all the staffs from the LORD’s presence to all the Israelites. They saw them, and each man took his own staff.
And the LORD said unto Moses, Bring Aaron’s
rod again before the testimony, to be kept for a
token against the rebels; and thou shalt quite take away their murmurings from me, that they die not.
The LORD said to Moses, “Put Aaron’s staff back in front of the Testimony, to be kept as a sign for the
rebellious, so that you may put an end to their
grumbling against Me, lest they die.”
Take the rod, and gather thou the assembly together, thou, and Aaron thy brother, and speak ye unto the rock before their eyes; and it shall give forth his water, and thou shalt bring forth to them water out of the rock: so thou shalt give the congregation and their beasts drink.
“Take the staff and
assemble the congregation. You and your brother Aaron are to speak to the rock while they watch, and it will pour out its water. You will bring out water from the rock and provide drink for the congregation and their
livestock.”
And Moses took the rod from before the LORD, as he commanded him.
So Moses took the staff from the LORD’s presence, just as he had been commanded.
And Moses lifted up his hand, and with his
rod he
smote the rock twice: and the water came out abundantly, and the congregation
drank, and their beasts also.
Then Moses raised his hand and struck the rock twice with his staff, so that a great amount of water
gushed out, and the congregation and their
livestock were able to drink.
And he had thirty sons that
rode on thirty
ass colts, and they had thirty cities, which are called Havoth-
jair unto this day, which are in the land of
Gilead.
He had thirty sons who
rode on thirty
donkeys. And they had thirty towns in the land of
Gilead, which to this day are called Havvoth-
jair.
And he had forty sons and thirty nephews, that
rode on
threescore and ten
ass colts: and he judged Israel eight years.
He had forty sons and thirty grandsons, who
rode on seventy
donkeys. And he judged Israel eight years.
But
Jonathan heard not when his father charged the people with the oath: wherefore he put forth the end of the
rod that was in his hand, and
dipped it in an
honeycomb, and put his hand to his mouth; and his eyes were
enlightened.
Jonathan, however, had not heard that his father had charged the people with the oath. So he reached out the end of the staff in his hand,
dipped it into the
honeycomb, and put his hand to his mouth; and his eyes
brightened.
Then Saul said to
Jonathan, Tell me what thou hast done. And
Jonathan told him, and said, I did but taste a little honey with the end of the
rod that was in mine hand, and, lo, I must die.
“Tell me what you have done,” Saul commanded him. So
Jonathan told him, “I only tasted a little honey with the end of the staff that was in my hand. And now I must die?”
And it was so, as she
rode on the
ass, that she came down by the
covert of the hill, and, behold, David and his men came down against her; and she met them.
As
Abigail came riding her
donkey into a mountain
ravine, she saw David and his men coming down toward her, and she met them.
And
Abigail hasted, and arose, and
rode upon an
ass, with five damsels of hers that went after her; and she went after the messengers of David, and became his wife.
So
Abigail hurried and got on a
donkey, and attended by five of her maidens, she followed David’s messengers and became his wife.
And David
smote them from the
twilight even unto the evening of the next day: and there escaped not a man of them, save four hundred young men, which
rode upon camels, and fled.
And David struck them down from
twilight until the evening of the next day. Not a man escaped, except four hundred young men who fled, riding off on camels.
I will be his father, and he shall be my son. If he commit iniquity, I will
chasten him with the
rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men:
I will be his Father, and he will be My son. When he does wrong, I will discipline him with the rod of men and with the blows of the sons of men.
And
Absalom met the servants of David. And
Absalom rode upon a
mule, and the
mule went under the thick boughs of a great oak, and his head caught hold of the oak, and he was taken up between the heaven and the earth; and the
mule that was under him went away.
Now
Absalom was riding on his
mule when he met the servants of David, and as the
mule went under the thick branches of a large oak,
Absalom’s head was caught fast in the tree. The
mule under him kept going, so that he was suspended in midair.
And he
rode upon a
cherub, and did fly: and he was seen upon the wings of the wind.
And it came to pass in the mean while, that the heaven was black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. And
Ahab rode, and went to
Jezreel.
Meanwhile, the sky grew dark with clouds and wind, and a heavy rain began to fall. So
Ahab rode away and went to
Jezreel.
So there went one on
horseback to meet him, and said, Thus saith the king, Is it peace? And
Jehu said, What hast thou to do with peace? turn thee behind me. And the
watchman told, saying, The
messenger came to them, but he cometh not again.
So a
horseman rode off to meet
Jehu and said, “This is what the king asks: ‘Have you come in peace?’” “What do you know about peace?”
Jehu replied. “Fall in behind me.” And the
watchman reported, “The
messenger reached them, but he is not coming back.”
Then said
Jehu to Bidkar his captain, Take up, and cast him in the portion of the field of
Naboth the Jezreelite: for remember how that, when I and thou
rode together after
Ahab his father, the LORD laid this burden upon him;
And
Jehu said to Bidkar his officer, “
Pick him up and throw him into the field of
Naboth the Jezreelite. For remember that when you and I were riding together behind his father
Ahab, the LORD lifted up this burden against him:
And the sons of
Javan; Elishah, and
Tarshish, Kittim, and Dodanim.
And the sons of
Javan: Elishah,
Tarshish, the Kittites, and the
Rodanites.
And I arose in the night, I and some few men with me; neither told I any man what my God had put in my heart to do at Jerusalem: neither was there any beast with me, save the beast that I
rode upon.
I set out at night with a few men. I did not tell
anyone what my God had laid on my heart to do for Jerusalem. The only animal with me was the one on which I was riding.
So the posts that
rode upon mules and camels went out, being
hastened and pressed on by the king’s commandment. And the decree was given at
Shushan the palace.
The couriers
rode out in
haste on their royal horses, pressed on by the command of the king. And the edict was also issued in the citadel of
Susa.
Let him take his
rod away from me, and let not his fear
terrify me:
Let Him remove His
rod from me, so that His terror will no longer
frighten me.
Their houses are safe from fear, neither is the rod of God upon them.
Their homes are safe from fear; no rod of punishment from God is upon them.
His bones are as strong pieces of brass; his bones are like bars of iron.
His bones are tubes of bronze; his limbs are rods of iron.
Thou shalt break them with a
rod of iron; thou shalt
dash them in pieces like a
potter’s vessel.
You will break them with an iron
scepter; You will
shatter them like pottery.”
And he
rode upon a
cherub, and did fly:
yea, he did fly upon the wings of the wind.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy
rod and thy staff they comfort me.
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
Remember thy congregation, which thou hast purchased of old; the
rod of thine inheritance, which thou hast redeemed; this mount
Zion, wherein thou hast dwelt.
Remember Your congregation, which You purchased long ago and redeemed as the tribe of Your inheritance— Mount
Zion where You dwell.
Then will I visit their
transgression with the
rod, and their iniquity with stripes.
I will attend to their
transgression with the
rod, and to their iniquity with stripes.
The LORD shall send the
rod of thy strength out of
Zion: rule thou in the midst of thine enemies.
The LORD extends Your mighty
scepter from
Zion: “Rule in the midst of Your enemies.”
For the rod of the wicked shall not rest upon the lot of the righteous; lest the righteous put forth their hands unto iniquity.
For the
scepter of the wicked will not rest upon the land
allotted to the righteous, so that the righteous will not put forth their hands to injustice.
In the lips of him that hath understanding wisdom is found: but a rod is for the back of him that is void of understanding.
Wisdom is found on the lips of the
discerning, but a
rod is for the back of him who lacks judgment.
He that spareth his
rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him
betimes.
He who spares the
rod hates his son, but he who loves him disciplines him
diligently.
In the mouth of the
foolish is a
rod of pride: but the lips of the wise shall preserve them.
The proud speech of a
fool brings a
rod to his back, but the lips of the wise protect them.
He that soweth iniquity shall
reap vanity: and the
rod of his anger shall fail.
He who sows injustice will
reap disaster, and the
rod of his
fury will be destroyed.
Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the
rod of correction shall drive it far from him.
Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child, but the
rod of discipline drives it far from him.
Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the
rod, he shall not die.
Do not
withhold discipline from a child; although you strike him with a
rod, he will not die.
Thou shalt beat him with the
rod, and shalt deliver his soul from
hell.
Strike him with a
rod, and you will deliver his soul from
Sheol.
A
whip for the horse, a
bridle for the
donkey, and a
rod for the backs of fools!
The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame.
A rod of correction imparts wisdom, but a child left to himself disgraces his mother.
His hands are as gold rings set with the
beryl: his
belly is as bright ivory overlaid with sapphires.
His arms are
rods of gold set with
beryl. His body is an ivory
panel bedecked with sapphires.
For thou hast broken the yoke of his burden, and the staff of his shoulder, the
rod of his
oppressor, as in the day of
Midian.
For as in the day of
Midian You have
shattered the yoke of their burden, the bar across their shoulders, and the
rod of their
oppressor.
O Assyrian, the
rod of mine anger, and the staff in their hand is mine
indignation.
Woe to Assyria, the
rod of My anger; the staff in their hands is My wrath.
Shall the
axe boast itself against him that heweth
therewith? or shall the saw
magnify itself against him that shaketh it? as if the
rod should
shake itself against them that lift it up, or as if the staff should lift up itself, as if it were no wood.
Does an
axe raise itself above the one who swings it? Does a saw
boast over him who saws with it? It would be like a
rod waving the one who lifts it, or a staff lifting him who is not wood!
Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD of hosts, O my people that dwellest in
Zion, be not afraid of the Assyrian: he shall
smite thee with a
rod, and shall lift up his staff against thee, after the manner of Egypt.
Therefore this is what the Lord GOD of Hosts says: “O My people who dwell in
Zion, do not fear Assyria, who strikes you with a
rod and lifts his staff against you as the Egyptians did.
And the LORD of hosts shall
stir up a
scourge for him according to the slaughter of
Midian at the rock of Oreb: and as his
rod was upon the sea, so shall he lift it up after the manner of Egypt.
And the LORD of Hosts will
brandish a
whip against them, as when He struck
Midian at the rock of Oreb. He will raise His staff over the sea, as He did in Egypt.
And there shall come forth a
rod out of the stem of
Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots:
Then a shoot will spring up from the
stump of
Jesse, and a Branch from his roots will bear fruit.
But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with
equity for the
meek of the earth: and he shall
smite the earth with the
rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he
slay the wicked.
but with righteousness He will judge the poor, and with
equity He will decide for the lowly of the earth. He will strike the earth with the
rod of His mouth and
slay the wicked with the breath of His lips.
Rejoice not thou, whole Palestina, because the
rod of him that
smote thee is broken: for out of the serpent’s root shall come forth a
cockatrice, and his fruit shall be a
fiery flying serpent.
Do not
rejoice, all you Philistines, that the
rod that struck you is broken. For a
viper will spring from the root of the
snake, and a flying serpent from its egg.
For through the voice of the LORD shall the Assyrian be beaten down, which
smote with a
rod.
For Assyria will be
shattered at the voice of the LORD; He will strike them with His
scepter.
And in every place where the grounded staff shall pass, which the LORD shall lay upon him, it shall be with tabrets and harps: and in battles of
shaking will he fight with it.
And with every stroke of the
rod of punishment that the LORD brings down on them, the tambourines and lyres will sound as He battles with weapons
brandished.
Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, Jeremiah, what seest thou? And I said, I see a
rod of an
almond tree.
And the word of the LORD came to me, asking, “Jeremiah, what do you see?” “I see a branch of an
almond tree,” I replied.
The portion of Jacob is not like them: for he is the former of all things; and Israel is the rod of his inheritance: The LORD of hosts is his name.
The Portion of Jacob is not like these, for He is the Maker of all things, and Israel is the tribe of His inheritance— the LORD of Hosts is His name.
All ye that are about him,
bemoan him; and all ye that know his name, say, How is the strong staff broken, and the beautiful
rod!
The portion of Jacob is not like them; for he is the former of all things: and Israel is the rod of his inheritance: the LORD of hosts is his name.
The Portion of Jacob is not like these, for He is the Maker of all things, and of the tribe of His inheritance— the LORD of Hosts is His name.
I am the man that hath seen
affliction by the
rod of his wrath.
I am the man who has seen
affliction under the
rod of God’s wrath.
Behold the day, behold, it is come: the morning is gone forth; the
rod hath
blossomed, pride hath
budded.
Violence is risen up into a
rod of wickedness: none of them shall remain, nor of their multitude, nor of any of theirs: neither shall there be
wailing for them.
Their violence has grown into a
rod to
punish their wickedness. None of them will remain: none of their multitude, none of their wealth, and nothing of value.
And she had strong
rods for the sceptres of them that bare rule, and her
stature was
exalted among the thick branches, and she appeared in her height with the multitude of her branches.
It had strong branches, fit for a ruler’s
scepter. It towered high above the thick branches, conspicuous for its height and for its dense foliage.
But she was
plucked up in
fury, she was cast down to the ground, and the east wind dried up her fruit: her strong
rods were broken and
withered; the fire consumed them.
But it was uprooted in
fury, cast down to the ground, and the east wind dried up its fruit. Its strong branches were
stripped off and they
withered; the fire consumed them.
And fire is gone out of a
rod of her branches, which hath
devoured her fruit, so that she hath no strong
rod to be a
sceptre to rule. This is a
lamentation, and shall be for a
lamentation.
Fire has gone out from its main branch and
devoured its fruit; on it no strong branch remains fit for a ruler’s
scepter.’ This is a
lament and shall be used as a
lament.”
And I will cause you to pass under the rod, and I will bring you into the bond of the covenant:
I will make you pass under the rod and will bring you into the bond of the covenant.
It is sharpened to make a
sore slaughter; it is
furbished that it may
glitter: should we then make
mirth? it contemneth the
rod of my son, as every tree.
it is sharpened for the slaughter, polished to
flash like
lightning! Should we
rejoice in the
scepter of My son? The sword despises every such stick.
Because it is a trial, and what if the sword
contemn even the
rod? it shall be no more, saith the Lord GOD.
Surely testing will come! And what if even the
scepter, which the sword despises, does not continue?’ declares the Lord GOD.
