But when
Ahaziah the king of Judah saw this, he fled by the way of the garden house. And
Jehu followed after him, and
said,
Smite him also in the
chariot. And they did so at the going up to Gur, which is by Ibleam. And he fled to
Megiddo, and died there.
When King
Ahaziah of Judah saw this, he fled up the road toward Beth-haggan. And
Jehu pursued him,
shouting, “Shoot him too!” So they shot
Ahaziah in his
chariot on the
Ascent of Gur, near Ibleam, and he fled to
Megiddo and died there.
And as
Jehu entered in at the gate, she
said, Had Zimri peace, who
slew his master?
And as
Jehu entered the gate, she asked, “Have you come in peace, O Zimri, murderer of your master?”
And he lifted up his face to the window, and said, Who is on my side? who? And there looked out to him two or three eunuchs.
He looked up at the window and called out, “Who is on my side? Who?” And two or three eunuchs looked down at him.
And he
said, Throw her down. So they threw her down: and some of her blood was
sprinkled on the wall, and on the horses: and he
trode her under foot.
“Throw her down!”
yelled Jehu. So they threw her down, and her blood splattered on the wall and on the horses as they
trampled her underfoot.
And when he was come in, he did eat and drink, and
said, Go, see now this
cursed woman, and
bury her: for she is a king’s daughter.
Then
Jehu went in and
ate and
drank. “Take care of this
cursed woman,” he
said, “and
bury her, for she was the daughter of a king.”
Wherefore they came again, and told him. And he
said, This is the word of the LORD, which he spake by his servant
Elijah the Tishbite, saying, In the portion of
Jezreel shall dogs eat the flesh of
Jezebel:
So they went back and told
Jehu, who replied, “This is the word of the LORD, which He spoke through His servant
Elijah the Tishbite: ‘On the plot of ground at
Jezreel the dogs will
devour the flesh of
Jezebel.
But they were exceedingly afraid, and said, Behold, two kings stood not before him: how then shall we stand?
But they were
terrified and reasoned, “If two kings could not stand against him, how can we?”
Then he wrote a letter the second time to them, saying, If ye be mine, and if ye will
hearken unto my voice, take ye the heads of the men your master’s sons, and come to me to
Jezreel by to
morrow this time. Now the king’s sons, being seventy persons, were with the great men of the city, which brought them up.
Then
Jehu wrote them a second letter and
said: “If you are on my side, and if you will obey me, then bring the heads of your master’s sons to me at
Jezreel by this time
tomorrow.” Now the sons of the king, seventy in all, were being brought up by the leading men of the city.
And there came a
messenger, and told him, saying, They have brought the heads of the king’s sons. And he
said, Lay ye them in two heaps at the entering in of the gate until the morning.
When the
messenger arrived, he told
Jehu, “They have brought the heads of the sons of the king.” And
Jehu ordered, “Pile them in two heaps at the entrance of the gate until morning.”
And it came to pass in the morning, that he went out, and stood, and
said to all the people, Ye be righteous: behold, I
conspired against my master, and
slew him: but who
slew all these?
The next morning,
Jehu went out and stood before all the people and
said, “You are innocent. It was I who
conspired against my master and killed him. But who killed all these?
Jehu met with the brethren of
Ahaziah king of Judah, and
said, Who are ye? And they answered, We are the brethren of
Ahaziah; and we go down to
salute the children of the king and the children of the queen.
Jehu met some relatives of
Ahaziah king of Judah and asked, “Who are you?” “We are relatives of
Ahaziah,” they answered, “and we have come down to
greet the sons of the king and of the queen mother.”
And he
said, Take them alive. And they took them alive, and
slew them at the pit of the shearing house, even two and forty men; neither left he any of them.
Then
Jehu ordered, “Take them alive.” So his men took them alive, then slaughtered them at the well of Beth-
eked—forty-two men. He
spared none of them.
And when he was departed thence, he lighted on Jehonadab the son of Rechab coming to meet him: and he
saluted him, and
said to him, Is thine heart right, as my heart is with thy heart? And Jehonadab answered, It is. If it be, give me thine hand. And he gave him his hand; and he took him up to him into the
chariot.
When he left there, he found Jehonadab son of Rechab, who was coming to meet him.
Jehu greeted him and asked, “Is your heart as true to mine as my heart is to yours?” “It is!” Jehonadab replied. “If it is,”
said Jehu, “give me your hand.” So he gave him his hand, and
Jehu helped him into his
chariot,
And he
said, Come with me, and see my zeal for the LORD. So they made him
ride in his
chariot.
saying, “Come with me and see my zeal for the LORD!” So he had him
ride in his
chariot.
And
Jehu gathered all the people together, and
said unto them,
Ahab served
Baal a little; but
Jehu shall serve him much.
Then
Jehu brought all the people together and
said, “
Ahab served
Baal a little, but
Jehu will serve him a lot.
And
Jehu said to the keeper of the
wardrobe, “Bring out garments for all the servants of
Baal.” So he brought out garments for them.
And
Jehu went, and Jehonadab the son of Rechab, into the house of
Baal, and
said unto the worshippers of
Baal, Search, and look that there be here with you none of the servants of the LORD, but the worshippers of
Baal only.
Next,
Jehu and Jehonadab son of Rechab entered the temple of
Baal, and
Jehu said to the servants of
Baal, “Look around to see that there are no servants of the LORD here among you—only servants of
Baal.”
And when they went in to offer sacrifices and burnt offerings,
Jehu appointed
fourscore men without, and
said, If any of the men whom I have brought into your hands escape, he that letteth him go, his life shall be for the life of him.
And they went in to offer sacrifices and burnt offerings. Now
Jehu had stationed eighty men outside and
warned them, “If
anyone allows one of the men I am delivering into your hands to escape, he will
forfeit his life for theirs.”
And it came to pass, as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt offering, that
Jehu said to the guard and to the captains, Go in, and
slay them; let none come forth. And they
smote them with the edge of the sword; and the guard and the captains cast them out, and went to the city of the house of
Baal.
When he had finished making the burnt offering,
Jehu said to the guards and officers, “Go in and kill them. Do not let
anyone out.” So the guards and officers put them to the sword, threw the bodies out, and went into the inner room of the temple of
Baal.
And the LORD
said unto
Jehu, Because thou hast done well in
executing that which is right in mine eyes, and hast done unto the house of
Ahab according to all that was in mine heart, thy children of the fourth generation shall sit on the throne of Israel.
Nevertheless, the LORD
said to
Jehu, “Because you have done well in carrying out what is right in My sight and have done to the house of
Ahab all that was in My heart, four generations of your sons will sit on the throne of Israel.”
And he brought forth the king’s son, and put the crown upon him, and gave him the testimony; and they made him king, and
anointed him; and they
clapped their hands, and
said, God save the king.
Then Jehoiada brought out the king’s son, put the crown on him, presented him with the Testimony, and proclaimed him king. They
anointed him, and the people
clapped their hands and declared, “Long live the king!”
But Jehoiada the priest commanded the captains of the hundreds, the officers of the host, and said unto them, Have her forth without the ranges: and him that followeth her kill with the sword. For the priest had said, Let her not be slain in the house of the LORD.
And Jehoiada the priest ordered the commanders of hundreds in charge of the army, “Bring her out between the ranks, and put to the sword
anyone who follows her.” For the priest had
said, “She must not be put to death in the house of the LORD.”
And Jehoash said to the priests, All the money of the dedicated things that is brought into the house of the LORD, even the money of every one that passeth the account, the money that every man is set at, and all the money that cometh into any man’s heart to bring into the house of the LORD,
Then
Joash said to the priests, “Collect all the money brought as sacred gifts into the house of the LORD—the census money, the money from vows, and the money brought
voluntarily into the house of the LORD.
Then king Jehoash called for Jehoiada the priest, and the other priests, and said unto them, Why repair ye not the breaches of the house? now therefore receive no more money of your acquaintance, but deliver it for the breaches of the house.
So King
Joash called Jehoiada and the other priests and
said, “Why have you not repaired the damage to the temple? Now, therefore, take no more money from your
constituency, but hand it over for the repair of the temple.”
Now
Elisha was fallen sick of his sickness
whereof he died. And
Joash the king of Israel came down unto him, and
wept over his face, and
said, O my father, my father, the
chariot of Israel, and the
horsemen thereof.
When
Elisha had fallen sick with the illness from which he would die, Jehoash king of Israel came down to him and
wept over him, saying, “My father, my father, the
chariots and
horsemen of Israel!”
And
Elisha said unto him, Take bow and arrows. And he took unto him bow and arrows.
Elisha told him, “Take a bow and some arrows.” So Jehoash took a bow and some arrows.
And he
said to the king of Israel, Put thine hand upon the bow. And he put his hand upon it: and
Elisha put his hands upon the king’s hands.
Then
Elisha said to the king of Israel, “Put your hand on the bow.” So the king put his hand on the bow, and
Elisha put his hands on the king’s hands.
And he
said, Open the window eastward. And he opened it. Then
Elisha said, Shoot. And he shot. And he
said, The
arrow of the LORD’S
deliverance, and the
arrow of
deliverance from Syria: for thou shalt
smite the Syrians in Aphek, till thou have consumed them.
“Open the east window,”
said Elisha. So he opened it and
Elisha said, “Shoot!” So he shot. And
Elisha declared: “This is the LORD’s
arrow of victory, the
arrow of victory over
Aram, for you shall strike the Arameans in Aphek until you have put an end to them.”
And he
said, Take the arrows. And he took them. And he
said unto the king of Israel,
Smite upon the ground. And he
smote thrice, and stayed.
Then
Elisha said, “Take the arrows!” So he took them, and
Elisha said to the king of Israel, “Strike the ground!” So he struck the ground three times and stopped.
And the man of God was
wroth with him, and
said, Thou shouldest have
smitten five or six times; then hadst thou
smitten Syria till thou hadst consumed it: whereas now thou shalt
smite Syria but
thrice.
But the man of God was
angry with him and
said, “You should have struck the ground five or six times. Then you would have struck down
Aram until you had put an end to it. But now you will strike down
Aram only three times.”
Then
Amaziah sent messengers to Jehoash, the son of
Jehoahaz son of
Jehu, king of Israel, saying, Come, let us look one another in the face.
Then
Amaziah sent messengers to the king of Israel Jehoash son of
Jehoahaz, the son of
Jehu. “Come, let us meet face to face,” he
said.
And the LORD
said not that he would
blot out the name of Israel from under heaven: but he saved them by the hand of
Jeroboam the son of
Joash.
and since the LORD had
said that He would not
blot out the name of Israel from under heaven, He saved them by the hand of
Jeroboam son of Jehoash.
For they served idols,
whereof the LORD had
said unto them, Ye shall not do this thing.
They served idols, although the LORD had told them, “You shall not do this thing.”
Until the LORD removed Israel out of his sight, as he had said by all his servants the prophets. So was Israel carried away out of their own land to Assyria unto this day.
Finally, the LORD removed Israel from His presence, as He had declared through all His servants the prophets. So Israel was exiled from their homeland into Assyria, where they are to this day.
And
Rab-shakeh
said unto them, Speak ye now to
Hezekiah, Thus saith the great king, the king of Assyria, What confidence is this wherein thou trustest?
The
Rabshakeh said to them, “Tell
Hezekiah that this is what the great king, the king of Assyria, says: What is the basis of this confidence of yours?
But if ye say unto me, We trust in the LORD our God: is not that he, whose high places and whose altars
Hezekiah hath taken away, and hath
said to Judah and Jerusalem, Ye shall worship before this altar in Jerusalem?
But if you say to me, ‘We trust in the LORD our God,’ is He not the One whose high places and altars
Hezekiah has removed, saying to Judah and Jerusalem: ‘You must worship before this altar in Jerusalem’?
Am I now come up without the LORD against this place to destroy it? The LORD said to me, Go up against this land, and destroy it.
So now, was it apart from the LORD that I have come up against this place to destroy it? The LORD Himself said to me, ‘Go up against this land and destroy it.’”
Then
said Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, and Shebna, and Joah, unto
Rab-shakeh, Speak, I pray thee, to thy servants in the
Syrian language; for we understand it: and talk not with us in the Jews’ language in the ears of the people that are on the wall.
Then Eliakim son of Hilkiah, along with Shebnah and Joah,
said to the
Rabshakeh, “Please speak to your servants in
Aramaic, since we understand it. Do not speak with us in Hebrew in the hearing of the people on the wall.”
But
Rab-shakeh
said unto them, Hath my master sent me to thy master, and to thee, to speak these words? hath he not sent me to the men which sit on the wall, that they may eat their own dung, and drink their own
piss with you.
But the
Rabshakeh replied, “Has my master sent me to speak these words only to you and your master, and not to the men sitting on the wall, who are destined with you to eat their own dung and drink their own
urine?”
And they
said unto him, Thus saith
Hezekiah, This day is a day of trouble, and of
rebuke, and
blasphemy: for the children are come to the birth, and there is not strength to bring forth.
to tell him, “This is what
Hezekiah says:
Today is a day of distress,
rebuke, and disgrace; for children have come to the point of birth, but there is no strength to deliver them.
And Isaiah
said unto them, Thus shall ye say to your master, Thus saith the LORD, Be not afraid of the words which thou hast heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have
blasphemed me.
who replied, “Tell your master that this is what the LORD says: ‘Do not be afraid of the words you have heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have
blasphemed Me.
And
Hezekiah prayed before the LORD, and
said, O LORD God of Israel, which dwellest between the cherubims, thou art the God, even thou alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth: thou hast made heaven and earth.
And
Hezekiah prayed before the LORD: “O LORD, God of Israel, enthroned between the
cherubim, You alone are God over all the kingdoms of the earth. You made the heavens and the earth.
By the messengers thou hast reproached the Lord, and hast
said, With the multitude of my
chariots I am come up to the height of the mountains, to the sides of
Lebanon, and will cut down the tall
cedar trees thereof, and the choice
fir trees thereof: and I will enter into the lodgings of his borders, and into the forest of his
Carmel.
Through your servants you have
taunted the Lord, and you have
said: “With my many
chariots I have ascended to the heights of the mountains, to the remote peaks of
Lebanon. I have cut down its tallest cedars, the finest of its
cypresses. I have reached its
farthest outposts, the densest of its forests.
In those days was
Hezekiah sick unto death. And the prophet Isaiah the son of Amoz came to him, and
said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Set thine house in order; for thou shalt die, and not live.
In those days
Hezekiah became
mortally ill. The prophet Isaiah son of Amoz came to him and
said, “This is what the LORD says: ‘Put your house in order, for you are about to die; you will not recover.’”
And Isaiah
said, Take a
lump of figs. And they took and laid it on the
boil, and he recovered.
Then Isaiah
said, “Prepare a
poultice of figs.” So they brought it and applied it to the
boil, and
Hezekiah recovered.
And
Hezekiah said unto Isaiah, What shall be the sign that the LORD will
heal me, and that I shall go up into the house of the LORD the third day?
Now
Hezekiah had asked Isaiah, “What will be the sign that the LORD will
heal me and that I will go up to the house of the LORD on the third day?”
And Isaiah said, This sign shalt thou have of the LORD, that the LORD will do the thing that he hath spoken: shall the shadow go forward ten degrees, or go back ten degrees?
And Isaiah had replied, “This will be a sign to you from the LORD that He will do what He has promised: Would you like the shadow to go forward ten steps, or back ten steps?”
Then came Isaiah the prophet unto king
Hezekiah, and
said unto him, What
said these men? and from whence came they unto thee? And
Hezekiah said, They are come from a far country, even from Babylon.
Then the prophet Isaiah went to King
Hezekiah and asked, “Where did those men come from, and what did they say to you?” “They came from a distant land,”
Hezekiah replied, “from Babylon.”
And he
said, What have they seen in thine house? And
Hezekiah answered, All the things that are in mine house have they seen: there is nothing among my treasures that I have not shewed them.
“What have they seen in your palace?” Isaiah asked. “They have seen everything in my palace,” answered
Hezekiah. “There is nothing among my treasures that I did not show them.”
And Isaiah
said unto
Hezekiah, Hear the word of the LORD.
Then Isaiah
said to
Hezekiah, “Hear the word of the LORD:
Then
said Hezekiah unto Isaiah, Good is the word of the LORD which thou hast spoken. And he
said, Is it not good, if peace and truth be in my days?
But
Hezekiah said to Isaiah, “The word of the LORD that you have spoken is good.” For he thought, “Will there not at least be peace and security in my lifetime?”
And he built altars in the house of the LORD, of which the LORD said, In Jerusalem will I put my name.
Manasseh also built altars in the house of the LORD, of which the LORD had
said, “In Jerusalem I will put My Name.”
And he set a
graven image of the
grove that he had made in the house, of which the LORD
said to David, and to Solomon his son, In this house, and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all tribes of Israel, will I put my name for ever:
Manasseh even took the carved Asherah pole he had made and set it up in the temple, of which the LORD had
said to David and his son Solomon, “In this temple and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, I will establish My Name
forever.
And Hilkiah the high priest
said unto Shaphan the
scribe, I have found the book of the law in the house of the LORD. And Hilkiah gave the book to Shaphan, and he read it.
Then Hilkiah the high priest
said to Shaphan the
scribe, “I have found the Book of the Law in the house of the LORD!” And he gave it to Shaphan, who read it.
And Shaphan the
scribe came to the king, and brought the king word again, and
said, Thy servants have gathered the money that was found in the house, and have delivered it into the hand of them that do the work, that have the oversight of the house of the LORD.
And Shaphan the
scribe went to the king and reported, “Your servants have paid out the money that was found in the temple and have put it into the hands of the workers and supervisors of the house of the LORD.”
And she said unto them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Tell the man that sent you to me,
And Huldah said to them, “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘Tell the man who sent you
Then he
said, What title is that that I see? And the men of the city told him, It is the
sepulchre of the man of God, which came from Judah, and proclaimed these things that thou hast done against the altar of
Bethel.
Then the king asked, “What is this monument I see?” And the men of the city replied, “It is the tomb of the man of God who came from Judah and pronounced these things that you have done to the altar of
Bethel.”
And he said, Let him alone; let no man move his bones. So they let his bones alone, with the bones of the prophet that came out of Samaria.
“Let him rest,”
said Josiah. “Do not let
anyone disturb his bones.” So they left his bones undisturbed, along with those of the prophet who had come from Samaria.
And the LORD said, I will remove Judah also out of my sight, as I have removed Israel, and will cast off this city Jerusalem which I have chosen, and the house of which I said, My name shall be there.
For the LORD had
said, “I will remove Judah from My sight, just as I removed Israel. I will
reject this city Jerusalem, which I chose, and the temple of which I
said, ‘My Name shall be there.’”
And he carried out thence all the treasures of the house of the LORD, and the treasures of the king’s house, and cut in pieces all the vessels of gold which Solomon king of Israel had made in the temple of the LORD, as the LORD had said.
As the LORD had declared,
Nebuchadnezzar also carried off all the treasures from the house of the LORD and the royal palace, and he cut into pieces all the gold articles that Solomon king of Israel had made in the temple of the LORD.
And Gedaliah
sware to them, and to their men, and
said unto them, Fear not to be the servants of the Chaldees: dwell in the land, and serve the king of Babylon; and it shall be well with you.
And Gedaliah took an oath before them and their men,
assuring them, “Do not be afraid of the servants of the Chaldeans. Live in the land and serve the king of Babylon, and it will be well with you.”
Then
said Saul to his armourbearer, Draw thy sword, and thrust me through
therewith; lest these
uncircumcised come and
abuse me. But his armourbearer would not; for he was
sore afraid. So Saul took a sword, and fell upon it.
Then Saul
said to his
armor-bearer, “Draw your sword and run it through me, or these
uncircumcised men will come and
torture me!” But his
armor-bearer was
terrified and refused to do it. So Saul took his own sword and fell on it.
Then all Israel gathered themselves to David unto
Hebron, saying, Behold, we are thy bone and thy flesh.
Then all Israel came together to David at
Hebron and
said, “Here we are, your own flesh and blood.
And moreover in time past, even when Saul was king, thou
wast he that leddest out and broughtest in Israel: and the LORD thy God
said unto thee, Thou shalt feed my people Israel, and thou shalt be ruler over my people Israel, and thou shalt be ruler over my people Israel.
Even in times past, while Saul was king, you were the one who led Israel out and brought them back. And the LORD your God
said, ‘You will
shepherd My people Israel, and you will be ruler over them.’”
And the inhabitants of
Jebus said to David, Thou shalt not come
hither. Nevertheless David took the castle of
Zion, which is the city of David.
The people of
Jebus said to David, “You will never get in here.” Nevertheless, David captured the fortress of
Zion (that is, the City of David).
And David
said,
Whosoever smiteth the Jebusites first shall be chief and captain. So
Joab the son of Zeruiah went first up, and was chief.
Now David had
said, “
Whoever is the first to strike down a Jebusite will become chief commander.” And
Joab son of Zeruiah went up first, and he became the chief.
And David longed, and
said, Oh that one would give me drink of the water of the well of
Bethlehem, that is at the gate!
David longed for water and
said, “Oh, that someone would get me a drink of water from the well near the gate of
Bethlehem!”
And
said, My God
forbid it me, that I should do this thing: shall I drink the blood of these men that have put their lives in
jeopardy? for with the
jeopardy of their lives they brought it. Therefore he would not drink it. These things did these three mightiest.
saying, “Far be it from me, my God, to do this! How can I drink the blood of these men who risked their lives?” Because they had brought it at the risk of their lives, David refused to drink it. Such were the exploits of the three mighty men.
And David went out to meet them, and answered and
said unto them, If ye be come
peaceably unto me to help me, mine heart shall be
knit unto you: but if ye be come to
betray me to mine enemies, seeing there is no wrong in mine hands, the God of our fathers look
thereon, and
rebuke it.
And David went out to meet them, saying, “If you have come to me in peace to help me, my heart will be united with you; but if you have come to
betray me to my enemies when my hands are free of violence, may the God of our fathers see it and judge you.”
Then the spirit came upon Amasai, who was chief of the captains, and he
said, Thine are we, David, and on thy side, thou son of
Jesse: peace, peace be unto thee, and peace be to thine helpers; for thy God helpeth thee. Then David received them, and made them captains of the band.
Then the Spirit came upon Amasai, the chief of the Thirty, and he
said: “We are yours, O David! We are with you, O son of
Jesse! Peace, peace to you, and peace to your helpers, for your God helps you.” So David received them and made them leaders of his troops.
And David said unto all the congregation of Israel, If it seem good unto you, and that it be of the LORD our God, let us send abroad unto our brethren every where, that are left in all the land of Israel, and with them also to the priests and Levites which are in their cities and suburbs, that they may gather themselves unto us:
And he said to the whole assembly of Israel, “If it seems good to you, and if this is of the LORD our God, let us send word far and wide to the rest of our brothers in all the land of Israel, and also to the priests and Levites in their cities and pasturelands, so that they may join us.
And all the congregation said that they would do so: for the thing was right in the eyes of all the people.
And because this proposal seemed right to all the people, the whole assembly agreed to it.
And David enquired of God, saying, Shall I go up against the Philistines? and
wilt thou deliver them into mine hand? And the LORD
said unto him, Go up; for I will deliver them into thine hand.
So David inquired of God, “Should I go up against the Philistines? Will You deliver them into my hand?” “Go,” replied the LORD, “for I will deliver them into your hand.”
So they came up to
Baal-perazim; and David
smote them there. Then David
said, God hath broken in upon mine enemies by mine hand like the breaking forth of waters: therefore they called the name of that place
Baal-perazim.
So David and his men went up to
Baal-perazim, where he defeated the Philistines and
said, “Like a
bursting flood, God has
burst out against my enemies by my hand.” So they called that place
Baal-perazim.
Therefore David enquired again of God; and God
said unto him, Go not up after them; turn away from them, and come upon them over against the
mulberry trees.
So David again inquired of God, who answered him, “Do not march up after them, but circle around them and attack them in front of the
balsam trees.
Then David said, None ought to carry the ark of God but the Levites: for them hath the LORD chosen to carry the ark of God, and to minister unto him for ever.
Then David
said, “No one but the Levites may carry the ark of God, because the LORD has chosen them to carry the ark of the LORD and to minister before Him
forever.”
And
said unto them, Ye are the chief of the fathers of the Levites:
sanctify yourselves, both ye and your brethren, that ye may bring up the ark of the LORD God of Israel unto the place that I have prepared for it.
And he
said to them, “You are the heads of the
Levitical families. You and your relatives must
consecrate yourselves so that you may bring the ark of the LORD, the God of Israel, to the place I have prepared for it.
Blessed be the LORD God of Israel for ever and ever. And all the people
said,
Amen, and praised the LORD.
Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, from
everlasting to
everlasting.” Then all the people
said, “
Amen!” and “Praise the LORD!”
Now it came to pass, as David sat in his house, that David
said to
Nathan the prophet, Lo, I dwell in an house of cedars, but the ark of the covenant of the LORD remaineth under curtains.
After David had settled into his palace, he
said to
Nathan the prophet, “Here I am, living in a house of
cedar, while the ark of the covenant of the LORD is under a tent.”
Then
Nathan said unto David, Do all that is in thine heart; for God is with thee.
And
Nathan replied to David, “Do all that is in your heart, for God is with you.”
And David the king came and sat before the LORD, and said, Who am I, O LORD God, and what is mine house, that thou hast brought me hitherto?
Then King David went in, sat before the LORD, and said, “Who am I, O LORD God, and what is my house, that You have brought me this far?
Therefore now, LORD, let the thing that thou hast spoken concerning thy servant and concerning his house be established for ever, and do as thou hast said.
And now, O LORD, let the word You have spoken concerning Your servant and his house be established
forever. Do as You have promised,
Let it even be established, that thy name may be
magnified for ever, saying, The LORD of hosts is the God of Israel, even a God to Israel: and let the house of David thy servant be established before thee.
so that Your name will be established and
magnified forever when it is
said, ‘The LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, is God over Israel.’ And may the house of Your servant David be established before You.
And David
said, I will
shew kindness unto Hanun the son of Nahash, because his father shewed kindness to me. And David sent messengers to comfort him concerning his father. So the servants of David came into the land of the children of
Ammon to Hanun, to comfort him.
And David
said, “I will show kindness to Hanun son of Nahash, because his father showed kindness to me.” So David sent messengers to
console Hanun concerning his father. But when David’s servants arrived in the land of the
Ammonites to
console him,
But the princes of the children of
Ammon said to Hanun, Thinkest thou that David
doth honour thy father, that he hath sent comforters unto thee? are not his servants come unto thee for to search, and to overthrow, and to
spy out the land?
the princes of the
Ammonites said to Hanun, “Just because David has sent you comforters, do you really believe he is showing respect for your father? Have not his servants come to you to
explore the land,
spy it out, and overthrow it?”
Then there went certain, and told David how the men were served. And he sent to meet them: for the men were greatly
ashamed. And the king
said,
Tarry at
Jericho until your beards be grown, and then return.
When someone came and told David about his men, he sent messengers to meet them, since the men had been thoroughly
humiliated. The king told them, “Stay in
Jericho until your beards have grown back, and then return.”
And he
said, If the Syrians be too strong for me, then thou shalt help me: but if the children of
Ammon be too strong for thee, then I will help thee.
“If the Arameans are too strong for me,”
said Joab, “then you will come to my
rescue. And if the
Ammonites are too strong for you, then I will come to your
rescue.
And David
said to
Joab and to the rulers of the people, Go, number Israel from Beer-
sheba even to
Dan; and bring the number of them to me, that I may know it.
So David
said to
Joab and the commanders of the troops, “Go and count the Israelites from
Beersheba to
Dan and bring me a report, so that I may know their number.”
And David
said unto God, I have
sinned greatly, because I have done this thing: but now, I
beseech thee, do away the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done very
foolishly.
Then David
said to God, “I have
sinned greatly because I have done this thing. Now I
beg You to take away the iniquity of Your servant, for I have acted very
foolishly.”
So
Gad came to David, and
said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Choose thee
So
Gad went and
said to David, “This is what the LORD says: ‘You must choose
And David
said unto
Gad, I am in a great strait: let me fall now into the hand of the LORD; for very great are his
mercies: but let me not fall into the hand of man.
David answered
Gad, “I am deeply distressed. Please, let me fall into the hand of the LORD, for His
mercies are very great; but do not let me fall into the hands of men.”
And God sent an angel unto Jerusalem to destroy it: and as he was destroying, the LORD
beheld, and he
repented him of the evil, and
said to the angel that destroyed, It is enough, stay now thine hand. And the angel of the LORD stood by the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite.
Then God sent an angel to destroy Jerusalem, but as the angel was doing so, the LORD saw it and relented from the
calamity, and He
said to the angel who was destroying the people, “Enough! Withdraw your hand now!” At that time the angel of the LORD was standing by the
threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.
And David
said unto God, Is it not I that commanded the people to be numbered? even I it is that have
sinned and done evil indeed; but as for these sheep, what have they done? let thine hand, I pray thee, O LORD my God, be on me, and on my father’s house; but not on thy people, that they should be plagued.
And David
said to God, “Was it not I who gave the order to count the people? I am the one who has
sinned and acted wickedly. But these sheep, what have they done? O LORD my God, please let Your hand fall upon me and my father’s house, but do not let this plague remain upon Your people.”
Then David said to Ornan, Grant me the place of this threshingfloor, that I may build an altar therein unto the LORD: thou shalt grant it me for the full price: that the plague may be stayed from the people.
Then David
said to Ornan, “Grant me the site of this
threshing floor, that I may build an altar to the LORD. Sell it to me for the full price, so that the plague upon the people may be
halted.”
And Ornan
said unto David, Take it to thee, and let my lord the king do that which is good in his eyes: lo, I give thee the oxen also for burnt offerings, and the
threshing instruments for wood, and the wheat for the meat offering; I give it all.
Ornan
said to David, “My lord the king may take whatever seems good. Look, I will give the oxen for the burnt offerings, the
threshing sledges for the wood, and the wheat for the grain offering—I will give it all.”
And king David
said to Ornan,
Nay; but I will
verily buy it for the full price: for I will not take that which is thine for the LORD, nor offer burnt offerings without cost.
“No,” replied King David, “I
insist on paying the full price, for I will not take for the LORD what belongs to you, nor will I offer burnt offerings that cost me nothing.”
Then David said, This is the house of the LORD God, and this is the altar of the burnt offering for Israel.
Then David said, “Here shall be the house of the LORD God, as well as the altar of burnt offering for Israel.”
And David
said, Solomon my son is young and tender, and the house that is to be builded for the LORD must be exceeding
magnifical, of fame and of glory throughout all countries: I will therefore now make preparation for it. So David prepared abundantly before his death.
And David
said, “My son Solomon is young and inexperienced, and the house to be built for the LORD must be exceedingly magnificent—famous and glorious throughout all lands. Therefore I must make preparations for it.” So David made
lavish preparations before his death.
And David said to Solomon, My son, as for me, it was in my mind to build an house unto the name of the LORD my God:
“My son,” said David to Solomon, “it was in my heart to build a house for the Name of the LORD my God,
