If a man
sin against his neighbour, and an oath be laid upon him to make him
swear, and the oath come before thine altar in this house;
When a man
sins against his
neighbor and is required to take an oath, and he comes to take an oath before Your altar in this temple,
And if thy people Israel be put to the worse before the enemy, because they have
sinned against thee; and shall return and
confess thy name, and pray and make
supplication before thee in this house;
When Your people Israel are defeated before an enemy because they have
sinned against You, and they return to You and
confess Your name, praying and
pleading before You in this temple,
Then hear thou from the heavens, and
forgive the
sin of thy people Israel, and bring them again unto the land which thou gavest to them and to their fathers.
then may You hear from heaven and
forgive the
sin of Your people Israel. May You restore them to the land You gave to them and their fathers.
When the heaven is shut up, and there is no rain, because they have
sinned against thee; yet if they pray toward this place, and
confess thy name, and turn from their
sin, when thou
dost afflict them;
When the
skies are shut and there is no rain because Your people have
sinned against You, and they pray toward this place and
confess Your name, and they turn from their
sins because You have
afflicted them,
Then hear thou from heaven, and
forgive the
sin of thy servants, and of thy people Israel, when thou hast taught them the good way, wherein they should walk; and send rain upon thy land, which thou hast given unto thy people for an inheritance.
then may You hear from heaven and
forgive the
sin of Your servants, Your people Israel, so that You may teach them the good way in which they should walk. May You send rain on the land that You gave Your people as an inheritance.
Then hear thou from heaven thy dwelling place, and
forgive, and render unto every man according unto all his ways, whose heart thou knowest; (for thou only knowest the hearts of the children of men:)
be heard by You from heaven, Your dwelling place. And may You
forgive and repay each man according to all his ways,
since You know his heart—for You alone know the hearts of men—
If they
sin against thee, (for there is no man which
sinneth not,) and thou be
angry with them, and deliver them over before their enemies, and they carry them away
captives unto a land far off or near;
When they
sin against You—for there is no one who does not
sin—and You become
angry with them and deliver them to an enemy who takes them as
captives to a land far or near,
Yet if they
bethink themselves in the land
whither they are carried
captive, and turn and pray unto thee in the land of their captivity, saying, We have
sinned, we have done
amiss, and have dealt wickedly;
and when they come to their senses in the land to which they were taken, and they
repent and
plead with You in the land of their captors, saying, ‘We have
sinned and done wrong; we have acted wickedly,’
Then hear thou from the heavens, even from thy dwelling place, their prayer and their supplications, and maintain their cause, and
forgive thy people which have
sinned against thee.
then may You hear from heaven, Your dwelling place, their prayer and petition, and may You
uphold their cause. May You
forgive Your people who
sinned against You.
Moreover Solomon
hallowed the middle of the court that was before the house of the LORD: for there he offered burnt offerings, and the fat of the peace offerings, because the
brasen altar which Solomon had made was not able to receive the burnt offerings, and the meat offerings, and the fat.
Then Solomon consecrated the middle of the
courtyard in front of the house of the LORD, and there he offered the burnt offerings and the fat of the peace offerings,
since the bronze altar he had made could not contain all these offerings.
If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will
forgive their
sin, and will
heal their land.
and if My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven,
forgive their
sin, and
heal their land.
And the king made of the
algum trees terraces to the house of the LORD, and to the king’s palace, and harps and
psalteries for
singers: and there were none such seen before in the land of Judah.
The king made the
algum wood into steps for the house of the LORD and for the king’s palace, and into lyres and harps for the
singers. Never before had anything like them been seen in the land of Judah.)
So
Jeroboam and all the people came to
Rehoboam on the third day, as the king
bade, saying, Come again to me on the third day.
After three days,
Jeroboam and all the people returned to
Rehoboam,
since the king had said, “Come back to me on the third day.”
And they
smote all the cities round about
Gerar; for the fear of the LORD came upon them: and they
spoiled all the cities; for there was exceeding much
spoil in them.
and attacked all the cities around
Gerar, because the terror of the LORD had fallen upon them. They
plundered all the cities,
since there was much
plunder there.
And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed
singers unto the LORD, and that should praise the beauty of
holiness, as they went out before the army, and to say, Praise the LORD; for his mercy endureth for ever.
Then
Jehoshaphat consulted with the people and appointed those who would
sing to the LORD and praise the
splendor of His
holiness. As they went out before the army, they were
singing: “Give
thanks to the LORD, for His loving devotion endures
forever.”
And when they began to
sing and to praise, the LORD set ambushments against the children of
Ammon, Moab, and mount
Seir, which were come against Judah; and they were
smitten.
The moment they began their shouts and praises, the LORD set ambushes against the men of
Ammon, Moab, and Mount
Seir who had come against Judah, and they were defeated.
Howbeit the LORD would not destroy the house of David, because of the covenant that he had made with David, and as he promised to give a light to him and to his sons for ever.
Yet the LORD was unwilling to destroy the house of David, because of the covenant He had made with David, and
since He had promised to maintain a lamp for David and his descendants
forever.
And the inhabitants of Jerusalem made
Ahaziah his youngest son king in his
stead: for the band of men that came with the Arabians to the camp had slain all the eldest. So
Ahaziah the son of Jehoram king of Judah reigned.
Then the people of Jerusalem made
Ahaziah, the youngest son of Jehoram, king in his place,
since the raiders who had come into the camp with the Arabs had killed all the older sons. So
Ahaziah son of Jehoram became king of Judah.
And she looked, and, behold, the king stood at his
pillar at the entering in, and the princes and the
trumpets by the king: and all the people of the land
rejoiced, and sounded with
trumpets, also the
singers with instruments of musick, and such as taught to
sing praise. Then
Athaliah rent her clothes, and said, Treason, Treason.
And she looked out and saw the king standing by his
pillar at the entrance. The officers and trumpeters were beside the king, and all the people of the land were
rejoicing and blowing
trumpets, while the
singers with musical instruments were leading the praises. Then
Athaliah tore her clothes and
screamed, “Treason, treason!”
Also Jehoiada appointed the offices of the house of the LORD by the hand of the priests the Levites, whom David had distributed in the house of the LORD, to offer the burnt offerings of the LORD, as it is written in the law of Moses, with
rejoicing and with
singing, as it was ordained by David.
Moreover, Jehoiada put the oversight of the house of the LORD into the hands of the
Levitical priests, whom David had appointed over the house of the LORD, to offer burnt offerings to the LORD as is written in the Law of Moses, with
rejoicing and song, as ordained by David.
But he
slew not their children, but did as it is written in the law in the book of Moses, where the LORD commanded, saying, The fathers shall not die for the children, neither shall the children die for the fathers, but every man shall die for his own
sin.
Yet he did not put their sons to death, but acted according to what is written in the Law, in the Book of Moses, where the LORD commanded: “Fathers must not be put to death for their children, and children must not be put to death for their fathers; each is to die for his own sin.”
Also he built towers in the desert, and
digged many wells: for he had much cattle, both in the low country, and in the plains:
husbandmen also, and vine dressers in the mountains, and in
Carmel: for he loved
husbandry.
Since he had much
livestock in the foothills and in the plain, he built towers in the desert and
dug many cisterns. And
since he was a lover of the soil, he had farmers and vinedressers in the hill country and in the fertile fields.
And now ye purpose to keep under the children of Judah and Jerusalem for
bondmen and
bondwomen unto you: but are there not with you, even with you,
sins against the LORD your God?
And now you intend to reduce to slavery the men and women of Judah and Jerusalem. But are you not also guilty before the LORD your God?
And said unto them, Ye shall not bring in the
captives hither: for whereas we have
offended against the LORD already, ye intend to add more to our
sins and to our
trespass: for our
trespass is great, and there is fierce wrath against Israel.
“You must not bring the
captives here,” they said, “for you are
proposing to bring guilt upon us from the LORD and to add to our
sins and our guilt. For our guilt is great, and fierce anger is upon Israel.”
For he sacrificed unto the gods of Damascus, which
smote him: and he said, Because the gods of the kings of Syria help them, therefore will I sacrifice to them, that they may help me. But they were the ruin of him, and of all Israel.
Since Damascus had defeated him, he sacrificed to their gods and said, “Because the gods of the kings of
Aram have helped them, I will sacrifice to them that they may help me.” But these gods were the
downfall of
Ahaz and of all Israel.
And they brought seven bullocks, and seven rams, and seven lambs, and seven he goats, for a sin offering for the kingdom, and for the sanctuary, and for Judah. And he commanded the priests the sons of Aaron to offer them on the altar of the LORD.
They brought seven bulls, seven rams, seven lambs, and seven male goats as a sin offering for the kingdom, for the sanctuary, and for Judah. And the king commanded the priests, the descendants of Aaron, to offer them on the altar of the LORD.
And they brought forth the he goats for the sin offering before the king and the congregation; and they laid their hands upon them:
Then they brought the goats for the sin offering before the king and the assembly, who laid their hands on them.
And the priests killed them, and they made
reconciliation with their blood upon the altar, to make an
atonement for all Israel: for the king commanded that the burnt offering and the
sin offering should be made for all Israel.
And the priests slaughtered the goats and put their blood on the altar for a
sin offering, to make
atonement for all Israel, because the king had ordered the burnt offering and the
sin offering for all Israel.
And all the congregation worshipped, and the
singers sang, and the trumpeters sounded: and all this continued until the burnt offering was finished.
The whole assembly was worshiping, the singers were singing, and the trumpeters were playing. All this continued until the burnt offering was completed.
Moreover
Hezekiah the king and the princes commanded the Levites to
sing praise unto the LORD with the words of David, and of
Asaph the
seer. And they
sang praises with
gladness, and they bowed their heads and worshipped.
Then King
Hezekiah and his officials ordered the Levites to
sing praises to the LORD in the words of David and of
Asaph the
seer. So they
sang praises with
gladness and bowed their heads and worshiped.
But the priests were too few, so that they could not
flay all the burnt offerings: wherefore their brethren the Levites did help them, till the work was ended, and until the other priests had
sanctified themselves: for the Levites were more upright in heart to
sanctify themselves than the priests.
However,
since there were not enough priests to skin all the burnt offerings, their
Levite brothers helped them until the work was finished and until the priests had been consecrated. For the Levites had been more
diligent in
consecrating themselves than the priests had been.
For they could not keep it at that time, because the priests had not
sanctified themselves sufficiently, neither had the people gathered themselves together to Jerusalem.
since they had been unable to observe it at the regular time, because not enough priests had consecrated themselves and the people had not been gathered in Jerusalem.
For there were many in the congregation that were not
sanctified: therefore the Levites had the charge of the killing of the passovers for every one that was not clean, to
sanctify them unto the LORD.
Since there were many in the assembly who had not consecrated themselves, the Levites were in charge of slaughtering the
Passover lambs for every unclean person to
consecrate the lambs to the LORD.
And the children of Israel that were present at Jerusalem kept the feast of
unleavened bread seven days with great
gladness: and the Levites and the priests praised the LORD day by day,
singing with loud instruments unto the LORD.
The Israelites who were present in Jerusalem celebrated the Feast of
Unleavened Bread for seven days with great joy, and the Levites and priests praised the LORD day after day, accompanied by loud instruments of praise to the LORD.
So there was great joy in Jerusalem: for since the time of Solomon the son of David king of Israel there was not the like in Jerusalem.
So there was great
rejoicing in Jerusalem, for nothing like this had happened there
since the days of Solomon son of David king of Israel.
And
Hezekiah appointed the courses of the priests and the Levites after their courses, every man according to his service, the priests and Levites for burnt offerings and for peace offerings, to minister, and to give
thanks, and to praise in the gates of the tents of the LORD.
Hezekiah reestablished the divisions of the priests and Levites—each of them according to their duties as priests or Levites—for the burnt offerings and peace offerings, for ministry, for giving
thanks, and for
singing praises at the gates of the LORD’s dwelling.
And
Azariah the chief priest of the house of
Zadok answered him, and said,
Since the people began to bring the offerings into the house of the LORD, we have had enough to eat, and have left
plenty: for the LORD hath blessed his people; and that which is left is this great store.
and
Azariah, the chief priest of the household of
Zadok, answered him, “
Since the people began to bring their contributions into the house of the LORD, we have had enough to eat and there is
plenty left over, because the LORD has blessed His people; this great abundance is what is left over.”
His prayer also, and how God was intreated of him, and all his
sin, and his
trespass, and the places wherein he built high places, and set up groves and
graven images, before he was humbled: behold, they are written among the sayings of the seers.
His prayer and how God received his
plea, as well as all his
sin and unfaithfulness, and the sites where he built high places and set up Asherah poles and idols before he humbled himself, they are indeed written in the Records of the Seers.
And afterward they made ready for themselves, and for the priests: because the priests the sons of Aaron were
busied in offering of burnt offerings and the fat until night; therefore the Levites prepared for themselves, and for the priests the sons of Aaron.
Afterward, they made preparations for themselves and for the priests,
since the priests, the descendants of Aaron, were offering up burnt offerings and fat until
nightfall. So the Levites made preparations for themselves and for the priests, the descendants of Aaron.
And the
singers the sons of
Asaph were in their place, according to the commandment of David, and
Asaph, and Heman, and
Jeduthun the king’s
seer; and the
porters waited at every gate; they might not depart from their service; for their brethren the Levites prepared for them.
The
singers, the descendants of
Asaph, were at their stations according to the command of David,
Asaph, Heman, and
Jeduthun the king’s
seer. And the gatekeepers at each gate did not need to leave their position, because their fellow Levites made preparations for them.
And there was no
passover like to that kept in Israel from the days of Samuel the prophet; neither did all the kings of Israel keep such a
passover as
Josiah kept, and the priests, and the Levites, and all Judah and Israel that were present, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
No such
Passover had been observed in Israel
since the days of Samuel the prophet. None of the kings of Israel ever observed a
Passover like the one that
Josiah observed with the priests, the Levites, all Judah, the Israelites who were present, and the people of Jerusalem.
Then Jeremiah
lamented over
Josiah, and to this day all the choirs of men and women
sing laments over
Josiah. They established them as a statute for Israel, and indeed they are written in the Book of Laments.
The
singers: the children of
Asaph, an hundred twenty and eight.
The
singers: the descendants of
Asaph, 128.
Beside their servants and their maids, of whom there were seven thousand three hundred thirty and seven: and there were among them two hundred singing men and singing women.
in addition to their 7,337 menservants and maidservants, as well as their 200 male and female singers.
So the priests, and the Levites, and some of the people, and the
singers, and the
porters, and the
Nethinims, dwelt in their cities, and all Israel in their cities.
So the priests, the Levites, the singers, the gatekeepers, and the temple servants, along with some of the people, settled in their own towns; and the rest of the Israelites settled in their towns.
Then they came to
Zerubbabel, and to the chief of the fathers, and said unto them, Let us build with you: for we seek your God, as ye do; and we do sacrifice unto him
since the days of Esar-haddon king of Assur, which brought us up
hither.
they approached
Zerubbabel and the heads of the families, saying, “Let us build with you because, like you, we seek your God and have been sacrificing to Him
since the time of King Esar-haddon of Assyria, who brought us here.”
But
Zerubbabel, and Jeshua, and the rest of the chief of the fathers of Israel, said unto them, Ye have nothing to do with us to build an house unto our God; but we ourselves together will build unto the LORD God of Israel, as king Cyrus the king of Persia hath commanded us.
But
Zerubbabel, Jeshua, and the other heads of the families of Israel replied, “You have no part with us in building a house for our God,
since we alone must build it for the LORD, the God of Israel, as Cyrus king of Persia has commanded us.”
But after that our fathers had
provoked the God of heaven unto wrath, he gave them into the hand of
Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, the
Chaldean, who destroyed this house, and carried the people away into Babylon.
But
since our fathers angered the God of heaven, He delivered them into the hand of
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, the
Chaldean who destroyed this temple and carried away the people to Babylon.
Then came the same Sheshbazzar, and laid the foundation of the house of God which is in Jerusalem: and since that time even until now hath it been in building, and yet it is not finished.
So this Sheshbazzar came and laid the foundation of the house of God in Jerusalem, and from that time until now it has been under construction, but it has not yet been completed.”
And offered at the
dedication of this house of God an hundred bullocks, two hundred rams, four hundred lambs; and for a
sin offering for all Israel, twelve he goats, according to the number of the tribes of Israel.
For the
dedication of the house of God they offered a hundred bulls, two hundred rams, four hundred lambs, and a
sin offering for all Israel of twelve male goats, one for each tribe of Israel.
And there went up some of the children of Israel, and of the priests, and the Levites, and the
singers, and the
porters, and the
Nethinims, unto Jerusalem, in the seventh year of
Artaxerxes the king.
So in the seventh year of King
Artaxerxes, he went up to Jerusalem with some of the Israelites, including priests, Levites,
singers, gatekeepers, and temple servants.
Also we
certify you, that touching any of the priests and Levites,
singers,
porters,
Nethinims, or ministers of this house of God, it shall not be lawful to
impose toll, tribute, or custom, upon them.
And be
advised that you have no authority to
impose tribute, duty, or
toll on any of the priests, Levites,
singers, doorkeepers, temple servants, or other servants of this house of God.
And by the good hand of our God upon us they brought us a man of understanding, of the sons of Mahli, the son of Levi, the son of Israel; and Sherebiah, with his sons and his brethren, eighteen;
And
since the
gracious hand of our God was upon us, they brought us Sherebiah—a man of insight from the descendants of Mahli son of Levi, the son of Israel—along with his sons and brothers, 18 men;
For I was
ashamed to require of the king a band of soldiers and
horsemen to help us against the enemy in the way: because we had spoken unto the king, saying, The hand of our God is upon all them for good that seek him; but his power and his wrath is against all them that
forsake him.
For I was
ashamed to ask the king for an
escort of soldiers and
horsemen to protect us from our enemies on the road,
since we had told him, “The hand of our God is
gracious to all who seek Him, but His great anger is against all who
forsake Him.”
Also the children of those that had been carried away, which were come out of the captivity, offered burnt offerings unto the God of Israel, twelve bullocks for all Israel,
ninety and six rams, seventy and seven lambs, twelve he goats for a
sin offering: all this was a burnt offering unto the LORD.
Then the exiles who had returned from captivity sacrificed burnt offerings to the God of Israel: 12 bulls for all Israel, 96 rams, 77 lambs, and a sin offering of 12 male goats. All this was a burnt offering to the LORD.
Since the days of our fathers have we been in a great
trespass unto this day; and for our
iniquities have we, our kings, and our priests, been delivered into the hand of the kings of the lands, to the sword, to captivity, and to a
spoil, and to confusion of face, as it is this day.
From the days of our fathers to this day, our guilt has been great. Because of our
iniquities, we and our kings and priests have been delivered into the hands of the kings of the earth and put to the sword and captivity, to
pillage and
humiliation, as we are this day.
Of the
singers also; Eliashib: and of the
porters; Shallum, and Telem, and
Uri.
From the
singers: Eliashib. From the gatekeepers: Shallum, Telem, and
Uri.
Let thine ear now be
attentive, and thine eyes open, that thou mayest hear the prayer of thy servant, which I pray before thee now, day and night, for the children of Israel thy servants, and
confess the
sins of the children of Israel, which we have
sinned against thee: both I and my father’s house have
sinned.
let Your eyes be open and Your ears
attentive to hear the prayer that I, Your servant, now pray before You day and night for Your servants, the Israelites. I
confess the
sins that we Israelites have committed against You. Both I and my father’s house have
sinned.
And cover not their iniquity, and let not their
sin be
blotted out from before thee: for they have
provoked thee to anger before the builders.
Do not cover up their iniquity or let their
sin be
blotted out from Your sight, for they have
provoked the builders.
Therefore was he
hired, that I should be afraid, and do so, and
sin, and that they might have matter for an evil report, that they might reproach me.
He had been
hired to
intimidate me so that I would
sin by doing as he suggested, so they could give me a bad name in order to discredit me.
For there were many in Judah
sworn unto him, because he was the son in law of Shechaniah the son of Arah; and his son Johanan had taken the daughter of Meshullam the son of Berechiah.
For many in Judah were bound by oath to him, since he was a son-in-law of Shecaniah son of Arah, and his son Jehohanan had married the daughter of Meshullam son of Berechiah.
Now it came to pass, when the wall was built, and I had set up the doors, and the
porters and the
singers and the Levites were appointed,
When the wall had been rebuilt and I had set the doors in place, the gatekeepers, singers, and Levites were appointed.
The
singers: the children of
Asaph, an hundred forty and eight.
The
singers: the descendants of
Asaph, 148.
Beside their manservants and their maidservants, of whom there were seven thousand three hundred thirty and seven: and they had two hundred forty and five singing men and singing women.
in addition to their 7,337 menservants and maidservants, as well as their 245 male and female singers.
So the priests, and the Levites, and the
porters, and the
singers, and some of the people, and the
Nethinims, and all Israel, dwelt in their cities; and when the seventh month came, the children of Israel were in their cities.
So the priests, Levites, gatekeepers, singers, and temple servants, along with some of the people and the rest of the Israelites, settled in their own towns. And by the seventh month the Israelites had settled in their towns.
And
Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people; (for he was above all the people;) and when he opened it, all the people stood up:
Ezra opened the book in full view of all the people,
since he was standing above them all, and as he opened it, all the people stood up.
Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our Lord: neither be ye
sorry; for the joy of the LORD is your strength.
Then
Nehemiah told them, “Go and eat what is rich, drink what is sweet, and send out portions to those who have nothing prepared,
since today is holy to our Lord. Do not
grieve, for the joy of the LORD is your strength.”
So the Levites stilled all the people, saying, Hold your peace, for the day is holy; neither be ye
grieved.
And the Levites calmed all the people, saying, “Be still,
since today is holy. Do not
grieve.”
And all the congregation of them that were come again out of the captivity made booths, and sat under the booths: for
since the days of Jeshua the son of
Nun unto that day had not the children of Israel done so. And there was very great
gladness.
The whole assembly who had returned from exile made booths and lived in them. From the days of Joshua son of
Nun until that day, the Israelites had not celebrated like this. And there was great
rejoicing.
And the seed of Israel separated themselves from all strangers, and stood and
confessed their
sins, and the
iniquities of their fathers.
Those of
Israelite descent separated themselves from all the foreigners, and they stood and
confessed their
sins and the
iniquities of their fathers.
Thou camest down also upon mount
Sinai, and spakest with them from heaven, and gavest them right judgments, and true laws, good statutes and commandments:
You came down on Mount
Sinai and spoke with them from heaven. You gave them just ordinances, true laws, and good statutes and commandments.
And testifiedst against them, that thou mightest bring them again unto thy law: yet they dealt proudly, and
hearkened not unto thy commandments, but
sinned against thy judgments, (which if a man do, he shall live in them;) and withdrew the shoulder, and
hardened their neck, and would not hear.
You
admonished them to turn back to Your law, but they were
arrogant and disobeyed Your commandments. They
sinned against Your ordinances, by which a man will live if he practices them. They
stubbornly shrugged their shoulders; they
stiffened their necks and would not obey.
Now therefore, our God, the great, the mighty, and the terrible God, who keepest covenant and mercy, let not all the trouble seem little before thee, that hath come upon us, on our kings, on our princes, and on our priests, and on our prophets, and on our fathers, and on all thy people, since the time of the kings of Assyria unto this day.
So now, our God, the great and mighty and
awesome God who keeps His
gracious covenant, do not view lightly all the
hardship that has come upon us, and upon our kings and leaders, our priests and prophets, our ancestors and all Your people, from the days of the kings of Assyria until
today.
And it yieldeth much increase unto the kings whom thou hast set over us because of our sins: also they have dominion over our bodies, and over our cattle, at their pleasure, and we are in great distress.
Its abundant harvest goes to the kings You have set over us because of our
sins. And they rule over our bodies and our
livestock as they please. We are in great distress.
And the rest of the people, the priests, the Levites, the
porters, the
singers, the
Nethinims, and all they that had separated themselves from the people of the lands unto the law of God, their wives, their sons, and their daughters, every one having knowledge, and having understanding;
“The rest of the people—the priests, Levites, gatekeepers, singers, temple servants, and all who had separated themselves from the people of the land to obey the Law of God—along with their wives and all their sons and daughters who are able to understand,
For the
shewbread, and for the continual meat offering, and for the continual burnt offering, of the sabbaths, of the new moons, for the set feasts, and for the holy things, and for the
sin offerings to make an
atonement for Israel, and for all the work of the house of our God.
for the
showbread, for the regular grain offerings and burnt offerings, for the Sabbath offerings, for the New Moons and appointed feasts, for the holy offerings, for the
sin offerings to make
atonement for Israel, and for all the duties of the house of our God.
For the children of Israel and the children of Levi shall bring the offering of the corn, of the new wine, and the oil, unto the chambers, where are the vessels of the sanctuary, and the priests that minister, and the
porters, and the
singers: and we will not
forsake the house of our God.
For the Israelites and the Levites are to bring the contributions of grain, new wine, and oil to the storerooms where the articles of the sanctuary are kept and where the ministering priests, the gatekeepers, and the singers stay. Thus we will not neglect the house of our God.”
The
overseer also of the Levites at Jerusalem was Uzzi the son of Bani, the son of Hashabiah, the son of Mattaniah, the son of Micha. Of the sons of
Asaph, the
singers were over the business of the house of God.
Now the
overseer of the Levites in Jerusalem was Uzzi son of Bani, the son of Hashabiah, the son of Mattaniah, the son of
Mica. He was one of
Asaph’s descendants, who were the
singers in charge of the service of the house of God.
For it was the king’s commandment concerning them, that a certain portion should be for the singers, due for every day.
For there was a command from the king concerning the
singers, an
ordinance regulating their daily
activities.
And at the
dedication of the wall of Jerusalem they sought the Levites out of all their places, to bring them to Jerusalem, to keep the
dedication with
gladness, both with thanksgivings, and with
singing, with cymbals,
psalteries, and with harps.
And the sons of the singers gathered themselves together, both out of the plain country round about Jerusalem, and from the villages of Netophathi;
The singers were also assembled from the region around Jerusalem, from the villages of the Netophathites,
Also from the house of
Gilgal, and out of the fields of Geba and Azmaveth: for the
singers had builded them villages round about Jerusalem.
from Beth-
gilgal, and from the fields of Geba and Azmaveth, for they had built villages for themselves around Jerusalem.
And Maaseiah, and Shemaiah, and
Eleazar, and Uzzi, and Jehohanan, and Malchijah, and
Elam, and Ezer. And the
singers sang loud, with Jezrahiah their
overseer.
and also Maaseiah, Shemaiah,
Eleazar, Uzzi, Jehohanan, Malchijah,
Elam, and Ezer. Then the choirs
sang out under the direction of Jezrahiah.
And both the
singers and the
porters kept the ward of their God, and the ward of the
purification, according to the commandment of David, and of Solomon his son.
They performed the service of their God and the service of
purification, along with the
singers and gatekeepers, as David and his son Solomon had prescribed.
For in the days of David and
Asaph of old there were chief of the
singers, and songs of praise and
thanksgiving unto God.
For long ago, in the days of David and
Asaph, there were directors for the
singers and for the songs of praise and
thanksgiving to God.
And all Israel in the days of
Zerubbabel, and in the days of
Nehemiah, gave the portions of the
singers and the
porters, every day his portion: and they
sanctified holy things unto the Levites; and the Levites
sanctified them unto the children of Aaron.
So in the days of
Zerubbabel and
Nehemiah, all Israel contributed the daily portions for the
singers and gatekeepers. They also set aside daily portions for the Levites, and the Levites set aside daily portions for the descendants of Aaron.
And he had prepared for him a great chamber, where
aforetime they laid the meat offerings, the
frankincense, and the vessels, and the
tithes of the corn, the new wine, and the oil, which was commanded to be given to the Levites, and the
singers, and the
porters; and the offerings of the priests.
and had prepared for
Tobiah a large room where they had previously stored the grain offerings, the
frankincense, the temple articles, and the
tithes of grain, new wine, and oil prescribed for the Levites,
singers, and gatekeepers, along with the contributions for the priests.
And I perceived that the portions of the Levites had not been given them: for the Levites and the singers, that did the work, were fled every one to his field.
I also learned that because the portions for the Levites had not been given to them, all the Levites and singers responsible for performing the service had gone back to their own fields.
Then
contended I with the rulers, and said, Why is the house of God
forsaken? And I gathered them together, and set them in their place.
So I
rebuked the officials and asked, “Why has the house of God been neglected?” Then I gathered the Levites and
singers together and stationed them at their posts,
Did not Solomon king of Israel
sin by these things? yet among many nations was there no king like him, who was beloved of his God, and God made him king over all Israel: nevertheless even him did
outlandish women cause to
sin.
Did not King Solomon of Israel sin in matters like this? There was not a king like him among many nations, and he was loved by his God, who made him king over all Israel—yet foreign women drew him into sin.
What shall we do unto the queen Vashti according to law, because she hath not performed the commandment of the king
Ahasuerus by the chamberlains?
“According to law,” he asked, “what should be done with Queen Vashti,
since she refused to obey the command of King
Xerxes delivered by the eunuchs?”
Now it came to pass, when they spake daily unto him, and he
hearkened not unto them, that they told
Haman, to see whether
Mordecai’s matters would stand: for he had told them that he was a
Jew.
And the letters were sent by posts into all the king’s provinces, to destroy, to kill, and to cause to perish, all Jews, both young and old, little children and women, in one day, even upon the
thirteenth day of the
twelfth month, which is the month
Adar, and to take the
spoil of them for a prey.
And the letters were sent by couriers to each of the royal provinces with the order to destroy, kill, and
annihilate all the Jews—young and old, women and children—and to
plunder their possessions on a
single day, the
thirteenth day of
Adar, the
twelfth month.
And
Haman told Zeresh his wife and all his friends every thing that had
befallen him. Then said his wise men and Zeresh his wife unto him, If
Mordecai be of the seed of the Jews, before whom thou hast begun to fall, thou shalt not prevail against him, but shalt surely fall before him.
Haman told his wife Zeresh and all his friends everything that had happened. His advisers and his wife Zeresh said to him, “
Since Mordecai, before whom your
downfall has begun, is Jewish, you will not prevail against him—for surely you will fall before him.”
And it was so, when the days of their feasting were gone about, that Job sent and
sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all: for Job said, It may be that my sons have
sinned, and
cursed God in their hearts. Thus did Job continually.
And when the days of feasting were over, Job would send for his children to
purify them, rising early in the morning to offer burnt offerings for all of them. For Job thought, “Perhaps my children have
sinned and
cursed God in their hearts.” This was Job’s regular practice.
In all this, Job did not
sin or charge God with
wrongdoing.
But he said unto her, Thou speakest as one of the
foolish women speaketh. What? shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil? In all this did not Job
sin with his lips.
“You speak as a
foolish woman speaks,” he told her. “Should we accept from God only good and not
adversity?” In all this, Job did not
sin in what he said.
And thou shalt know that thy tabernacle shall be in peace; and thou shalt visit thy
habitation, and shalt not
sin.
You will know that your tent is secure, and find nothing
amiss when
inspecting your home.
I have
sinned; what shall I do unto thee, O thou preserver of men? why hast thou set me as a mark against thee, so that I am a burden to myself?
If I have
sinned, what have I done to You, O watcher of mankind? Why have You made me Your
target, so that I am a burden to You?
