Sharp arrows of the mighty, with coals of
juniper.
Sharp arrows will come from the
warrior, with burning coals of the
broom tree!
For the LORD hath chosen Jacob unto himself, and Israel for his peculiar
treasure.
For the LORD has chosen Jacob as His own, Israel as His
treasured possession.
He causeth the vapours to
ascend from the ends of the earth; he maketh lightnings for the rain; he bringeth the wind out of his
treasuries.
He causes the clouds to rise from the ends of the earth. He generates the
lightning with the rain and brings forth the wind from His storehouses.
Mountains, and all hills; fruitful trees, and all cedars:
mountains and all hills, fruit trees and all cedars,
If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for
hid treasures;
if you seek it like silver and search it out like hidden
treasure,
She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: and happy is every one that retaineth her.
She is a tree of life to those who embrace her, and those who lay hold of her are blessed.
My son, keep my words, and lay up my commandments with thee.
My son, keep my words and
treasure my commandments within you.
That I may cause those that love me to
inherit substance; and I will fill their
treasures.
Treasures of wickedness profit nothing: but righteousness delivereth from death.
Ill-
gotten treasures profit nothing, but righteousness brings
deliverance from death.
The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise.
The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, and he who wins souls is wise.
Hope
deferred maketh the heart sick: but when the desire cometh, it is a
tree of life.
Hope
deferred makes the heart sick, but desire fulfilled is a
tree of life.
In the house of the righteous is much
treasure: but in the revenues of the wicked is trouble.
The house of the righteous has great
treasure, but the income of the wicked is trouble.
Better is little with the fear of the LORD than great
treasure and trouble
therewith.
Better a little with the fear of the LORD than great
treasure with
turmoil.
There is gold, and a multitude of
rubies: but the lips of knowledge are a precious
jewel.
There is an abundance of gold and
rubies, but lips of knowledge are a rare
treasure.
The getting of
treasures by a lying tongue is a vanity
tossed to and
fro of them that seek death.
Making a fortune by a lying tongue is a
vanishing mist, a deadly pursuit.
There is
treasure to be desired and oil in the dwelling of the wise; but a
foolish man spendeth it up.
Precious
treasures and oil are in the dwelling of the wise, but a
foolish man consumes them.
And by knowledge shall the chambers be filled with all precious and pleasant riches.
through knowledge its rooms are filled with every precious and beautiful
treasure.
Whoso keepeth the fig
tree shall eat the fruit thereof: so he that waiteth on his master shall be honoured.
Whoever tends a fig
tree will eat its fruit, and he who looks after his master will be honored.
For three things the earth is disquieted, and for four which it cannot bear:
Under three things the earth trembles, under four it cannot bear up:
I made me gardens and orchards, and I planted trees in them of all kind of fruits:
I made gardens and parks for myself, where I planted all kinds of fruit trees.
I made me pools of water, to water
therewith the wood that bringeth forth
trees:
I built reservoirs to water my groves of flourishing trees.
I gathered me also silver and gold, and the peculiar
treasure of kings and of the provinces: I
gat me men singers and women singers, and the delights of the sons of men, as musical instruments, and that of all sorts.
and I accumulated for myself silver and gold and the
treasure of kings and provinces. I gathered to myself male and female singers, and the delights of the sons of men—many concubines.
If the clouds be full of rain, they empty themselves upon the earth: and if the tree fall toward the south, or toward the north, in the place where the tree falleth, there it shall be.
If the clouds are full, they will pour out rain upon the earth; whether a tree falls to the south or to the north, in the place where it falls, there it will lie.
In the day when the keepers of the house shall
tremble, and the strong men shall bow themselves, and the grinders cease because they are few, and those that look out of the windows be
darkened,
on the day the keepers of the house
tremble and the strong men
stoop, when those
grinding cease because they are few and those watching through windows see
dimly,
Also when they shall be afraid of that which is high, and fears shall be in the way, and the
almond tree shall
flourish, and the
grasshopper shall be a burden, and desire shall fail: because man goeth to his long home, and the mourners go about the streets:
when men fear the heights and dangers of the road, when the
almond tree blossoms, the
grasshopper loses its spring, and the caper
berry shrivels— for then man goes to his eternal home and mourners walk the streets.
As the apple tree among the trees of the wood, so is my beloved among the sons. I sat down under his shadow with great delight, and his fruit was sweet to my taste.
Like an apple tree among the trees of the forest is my beloved among the young men. I delight to sit in his shade, and his fruit is sweet to my taste.
The fig
tree putteth forth her green figs, and the vines with the tender
grape give a good smell. Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away.
The fig
tree ripens its figs; the
blossoming vines spread their
fragrance. Arise, come away, my
darling; come away with me, my beautiful one.”
Thine head upon thee is like
Carmel, and the hair of thine head like purple; the king is held in the
galleries.
Your head crowns you like Mount
Carmel, the hair of your head like purple threads; the king is captured in your
tresses.
This thy
stature is like to a palm
tree, and thy breasts to clusters of grapes.
Your
stature is like a palm
tree; your breasts are clusters of fruit.
I said, I will go up to the palm tree, I will take hold of the boughs thereof: now also thy breasts shall be as clusters of the vine, and the smell of thy nose like apples;
I said, “I will
climb the palm
tree; I will take hold of its fruit.” May your breasts be like clusters of the vine, the
fragrance of your breath like apples,
The mandrakes give a smell, and at our gates are all manner of pleasant fruits, new and old, which I have laid up for thee, O my beloved.
The mandrakes send forth a
fragrance, and at our door is every delicacy, new as well as old, that I have
treasured up for you, my beloved.
Who is this that cometh up from the wilderness,
leaning upon her beloved? I raised thee up under the apple
tree: there thy mother brought thee forth: there she brought thee forth that bare thee.
Who is this coming up from the wilderness,
leaning on her beloved? I
roused you under the apple
tree; there your mother conceived you; there she
travailed and brought you forth.
When ye come to appear before me, who hath required this at your hand, to
tread my courts?
When you come to appear before Me, who has required this of you— this
trampling of My courts?
Their land also is full of silver and gold, neither is there any end of their
treasures; their land is also full of horses, neither is there any end of their
chariots:
Their land is full of silver and gold, with no limit to their
treasures; their land is full of horses, with no limit to their
chariots.
Therefore is the anger of the LORD
kindled against his people, and he hath stretched forth his hand against them, and hath
smitten them: and the hills did
tremble, and their carcases were
torn in the midst of the streets. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.
Therefore the anger of the LORD burns against His people; His hand is raised against them to strike them down. The mountains
quake, and the corpses lay like refuse in the streets.
Despite all this, His anger is not turned away; His hand is still upraised.
But yet in it shall be a tenth, and it shall return, and shall be eaten: as a
teil tree, and as an oak, whose substance is in them, when they cast their leaves: so the holy seed shall be the substance thereof.
And though a tenth remains in the land, it will be burned again. As the
terebinth and oak leave stumps when felled, so the holy seed will be a
stump in the land.”
And it was told the house of David, saying, Syria is
confederate with Ephraim. And his heart was moved, and the heart of his people, as the
trees of the wood are moved with the wind.
When it was reported to the house of David that
Aram was in league with Ephraim, the hearts of
Ahaz and his people
trembled like
trees in the forest
shaken by the wind.
And on all hills that shall be
digged with the
mattock, there shall not come thither the fear of briers and thorns: but it shall be for the sending forth of oxen, and for the
treading of lesser cattle.
For fear of the briers and thorns, you will no longer
traverse the hills once tilled by the
hoe; they will become places for oxen to
graze and sheep to
trample.
To turn aside the
needy from judgment, and to take away the right from the poor of my people, that widows may be their prey, and that they may
rob the fatherless!
to deprive the poor of fair
treatment and
withhold justice from the
oppressed of My people, to make widows their prey and orphans their
plunder.
I will send him against an
hypocritical nation, and against the people of my wrath will I give him a charge, to take the
spoil, and to take the prey, and to
tread them down like the
mire of the streets.
I will send him against a godless nation; I will
dispatch him against a people destined for My
rage, to take spoils and seize
plunder, and to
trample them down like clay in the streets.
For he saith, By the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom; for I am
prudent: and I have removed the bounds of the people, and have
robbed their
treasures, and I have put down the inhabitants like a
valiant man:
For he says: ‘By the strength of my hand I have done this, and by my wisdom, for I am
clever. I have removed the boundaries of nations and
plundered their
treasures; like a mighty one I subdued their rulers.
And the rest of the trees of his forest shall be few, that a child may write them.
The remaining trees of its forests will be so few that a child could count them.
They are gone over the passage: they have taken up their
lodging at Geba;
Ramah is afraid; Gibeah of Saul is fled.
They have crossed at the
ford: “We will
spend the night at Geba.”
Ramah trembles; Gibeah of Saul flees.
Behold, the Lord, the LORD of hosts, shall
lop the
bough with terror: and the high ones of
stature shall be
hewn down, and the
haughty shall be humbled.
Behold, the Lord GOD of Hosts will
lop off the branches with
terrifying power. The tall
trees will be cut down, the lofty ones will be felled.
Therefore I will
shake the heavens, and the earth shall remove out of her place, in the wrath of the LORD of hosts, and in the day of his fierce anger.
Therefore I will make the heavens
tremble, and the earth will be
shaken from its place at the wrath of the LORD of Hosts on the day of His burning anger.
Yea, the
fir trees rejoice at thee, and the cedars of
Lebanon, saying, Since thou art laid down, no feller is come up against us.
They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, and consider thee, saying, Is this the man that made the earth to
tremble, that did
shake kingdoms;
Those who see you will
stare; they will
ponder your fate: “Is this the man who
shook the earth and made the kingdoms
tremble,
That I will break the Assyrian in my land, and upon my mountains
tread him under foot: then shall his yoke depart from off them, and his burden depart from off their shoulders.
I will break Assyria in My land; I will
trample him on My mountain. His yoke will be taken off My people, and his burden removed from their shoulders.”
And
Heshbon shall cry, and Elealeh: their voice shall be heard even unto Jahaz: therefore the armed soldiers of Moab shall cry out; his life shall be
grievous unto him.
Heshbon and Elealeh cry out; their voices are heard as far as Jahaz. Therefore the soldiers of Moab cry out; their souls
tremble within.
And
gladness is taken away, and joy out of the
plentiful field; and in the vineyards there shall be no singing, neither shall there be
shouting: the
treaders shall
tread out no wine in their presses; I have made their
vintage shouting to cease.
Joy and
gladness are removed from the
orchard; no one sings or shouts in the vineyards. No one tramples the grapes in the winepresses; I have put an end to the
cheering.
Yet
gleaning grapes shall be left in it, as the
shaking of an olive
tree, two or three
berries in the top of the
uppermost bough, four or five in the outmost fruitful branches thereof, saith the LORD God of Israel.
Yet gleanings will remain, like an olive
tree that has been beaten— two or three
berries atop the
tree, four or five on its fruitful branches,” declares the LORD, the God of Israel.
The burden of Egypt. Behold, the LORD rideth upon a swift cloud, and shall come into Egypt: and the idols of Egypt shall be moved at his presence, and the heart of Egypt shall
melt in the midst of it.
This is the burden against Egypt: Behold, the LORD rides on a swift cloud; He is coming to Egypt. The idols of Egypt will
tremble before Him, and the hearts of the Egyptians will
melt within them.
In that day shall Egypt be like unto women: and it shall be afraid and fear because of the
shaking of the hand of the LORD of hosts, which he shaketh over it.
In that day the Egyptians will be like women. They will
tremble with fear beneath the
uplifted hand of the LORD of Hosts, when He brandishes it against them.
And the land of Judah shall be a terror unto Egypt, every one that maketh mention thereof shall be afraid in himself, because of the counsel of the LORD of hosts, which he hath determined against it.
The land of Judah will bring terror to Egypt; whenever Judah is mentioned, Egypt will
tremble over what the LORD of Hosts has
planned against it.
A
dire vision is declared to me: “The
traitor still betrays, and the destroyer still destroys. Go up, O
Elam! Lay siege, O Media! I will put an end to all her
groaning.”
For it is a day of trouble, and of
treading down, and of
perplexity by the Lord GOD of hosts in the valley of vision, breaking down the walls, and of crying to the mountains.
For the Lord GOD of Hosts has set a day of
tumult and
trampling and confusion in the Valley of Vision— of breaking down the walls and crying to the mountains.
Thus saith the Lord GOD of hosts, Go, get thee unto this
treasurer, even unto Shebna, which is over the house, and say,
This is what the Lord GOD of Hosts says: “Go, say to Shebna, the
steward in charge of the palace:
He stretched out his hand over the sea, he
shook the kingdoms: the LORD hath given a commandment against the merchant city, to destroy the strong holds thereof.
The LORD has stretched out His hand over the sea; He has made kingdoms
tremble. He has given a command that the strongholds of
Canaan be destroyed.
Yet her profits and wages will be set apart to the LORD; they will not be stored or saved, for her profit will go to those who live before the LORD, for abundant food and fine clothing.
When thus it shall be in the midst of the land among the people, there shall be as the
shaking of an olive
tree, and as the
gleaning grapes when the
vintage is done.
So will it be on the earth and among the nations, like a harvested olive
tree, like a
gleaning after a
grape harvest.
The foot shall
tread it down, even the feet of the poor, and the steps of the
needy.
The burden of the beasts of the south: into the land of trouble and
anguish, from whence come the young and old lion, the
viper and
fiery flying serpent, they will carry their riches upon the shoulders of young
asses, and their
treasures upon the bunches of camels, to a people that shall not profit them.
This is the burden against the beasts of the Negev: Through a land of
hardship and distress, of
lioness and lion, of
viper and flying serpent, they carry their wealth on the backs of
donkeys and their
treasures on the humps of camels, to a people of no profit to them.
Many days and years shall ye be troubled, ye careless women: for the
vintage shall fail, the gathering shall not come.
In a little more than a year you will
tremble, O secure ones. For the
grape harvest will fail and the fruit harvest will not arrive.
Tremble, ye women that are at ease; be troubled, ye careless ones: strip you, and make you bare, and
gird sackcloth upon your loins.
Woe to you, O destroyer never destroyed, O
traitor never
betrayed! When you have finished destroying, you will be destroyed. When you have finished
betraying, you will be
betrayed.
And wisdom and knowledge shall be the stability of thy times, and strength of salvation: the fear of the LORD is his
treasure.
He will be the sure foundation for your times, a
storehouse of salvation, wisdom, and knowledge. The fear of the LORD is
Zion’s
treasure.
The
highways lie waste, the
wayfaring man ceaseth: he hath broken the covenant, he hath
despised the cities, he regardeth no man.
The
highways are deserted; travel has ceased. The
treaty has been broken, the witnesses are
despised, and human life is disregarded.
The sinners in
Zion are afraid;
fearfulness hath surprised the hypocrites. Who among us shall dwell with the
devouring fire? who among us shall dwell with
everlasting burnings?
And all the host of heaven shall be dissolved, and the heavens shall be rolled together as a
scroll: and all their host shall fall down, as the leaf falleth off from the vine, and as a falling fig from the fig
tree.
All the stars of heaven will be dissolved. The
skies will be rolled up like a
scroll, and all their stars will fall like
withered leaves from the vine, like foliage from the fig
tree.
Hearken not to
Hezekiah: for thus saith the king of Assyria, Make an agreement with me by a present, and come out to me: and eat ye every one of his vine, and every one of his fig
tree, and drink ye every one the waters of his own
cistern;
Do not
listen to
Hezekiah, for this is what the king of Assyria says: Make peace with me and come out to me. Then every one of you will eat from his own vine and his own fig
tree, and drink water from his own
cistern,
By thy servants hast thou reproached the Lord, and hast said, By the multitude of my
chariots am I come up to the height of the mountains, to the sides of
Lebanon; and I will cut down the tall cedars thereof, and the choice
fir trees thereof: and I will enter into the height of his border, and the forest of his
Carmel.
Through your servants you have
taunted the Lord, and you have said: “With my many
chariots I have ascended to the heights of the mountains, to the remote peaks of
Lebanon. I have cut down its tallest cedars, the finest of its
cypresses. I have reached its
farthest heights, the densest of its forests.
And
Hezekiah was
glad of them, and shewed them the house of his precious things, the silver, and the gold, and the spices, and the precious
ointment, and all the house of his armour, and all that was found in his
treasures: there was nothing in his house, nor in all his dominion, that
Hezekiah shewed them not.
And
Hezekiah welcomed the envoys
gladly and showed them what was in his
treasure house—the silver, the gold, the spices, and the precious oil, as well as his entire
armory—all that was found in his storehouses. There was nothing in his palace or in all his dominion that
Hezekiah did not show them.
Then said he, What have they seen in thine house? And
Hezekiah answered, All that is in mine house have they seen: there is nothing among my
treasures that I have not shewed them.
“What have they seen in your palace?” Isaiah asked. “They have seen everything in my palace,” answered
Hezekiah. “There is nothing among my
treasures that I did not show them.”
The isles saw it, and feared; the ends of the earth were afraid, drew near, and came.
The islands see and fear; the ends of the earth
tremble. They approach and come forward.
I will plant in the wilderness the
cedar, the
shittah tree, and the
myrtle, and the oil
tree; I will set in the desert the
fir tree, and the pine, and the box
tree together:
I will plant cedars in the wilderness,
acacias, myrtles, and olive
trees. I will set
cypresses in the desert, elms and
boxwood together,
I have raised up one from the north, and he shall come: from the rising of the sun shall he call upon my name: and he shall come upon princes as upon
morter, and as the
potter treadeth clay.
I have raised up one from the north, and he has come— one from the east who calls on My name. He will march over rulers as if they were mortar, like a
potter who
treads the clay.
Fear ye not, neither be afraid: have not I told thee from that time, and have declared it? ye are even my witnesses. Is there a God beside me?
yea, there is no God; I know not any.
Do not
tremble or fear. Have I not told you and declared it long ago? You are My witnesses! Is there any God but Me? There is no other Rock; I know not one.”
They that make a
graven image are all of them vanity; and their
delectable things shall not profit; and they are their own witnesses; they see not, nor know; that they may be
ashamed.
All makers of idols are nothing, and the things they
treasure are worthless. Their witnesses fail to see or
comprehend, so they are put to shame.
He heweth him down cedars, and taketh the
cypress and the oak, which he strengtheneth for himself among the
trees of the forest: he planteth an ash, and the rain
doth nourish it.
He cuts down cedars or retrieves a
cypress or oak. He lets it grow strong among the
trees of the forest. He plants a
laurel, and the rain makes it grow.
And none considereth in his heart, neither is there knowledge nor understanding to say, I have burned part of it in the fire;
yea, also I have
baked bread upon the coals thereof; I have
roasted flesh, and eaten it: and shall I make the residue thereof an
abomination? shall I fall down to the stock of a
tree?
And no one considers in his heart, no one has the knowledge or insight to say, “I burned half of it in the fire, and I
baked bread on its coals; I
roasted meat and I
ate. Shall I make something
detestable with the rest of it? Shall I bow down to a block of wood?”
Sing, O ye heavens; for the LORD hath done it:
shout, ye lower parts of the earth: break forth into singing, ye mountains, O forest, and every
tree therein: for the LORD hath redeemed Jacob, and
glorified himself in Israel.
Sing for joy, O heavens, for the LORD has done this;
shout aloud, O depths of the earth. Break forth in song, O mountains, you forests and all your
trees. For the LORD has redeemed Jacob, and revealed His glory in Israel.
And I will give thee the treasures of darkness, and hidden riches of secret places, that thou mayest know that I, the LORD, which call thee by thy name, am the God of Israel.
I will give you the treasures of darkness and the riches hidden in secret places, so that you may know that I am the LORD, the God of Israel, who calls you by name.
You have never heard; you have never understood; for a long time your ears have not been open. For I knew how
deceitful you are; you have been called a
rebel from birth.
Thus saith thy Lord the LORD, and thy God that pleadeth the cause of his people, Behold, I have taken out of thine hand the cup of
trembling, even the
dregs of the cup of my
fury; thou shalt no more drink it again:
Thus says your Lord, the LORD, even your God, who defends His people: “See, I have removed from your hand the cup of
staggering. From that
goblet, the cup of My
fury, you will never drink again.
For ye shall go out with joy, and be led forth with peace: the mountains and the hills shall break forth before you into singing, and all the
trees of the field shall
clap their hands.
You will indeed go out with joy and be led forth in peace; the mountains and hills will
burst into song before you, and all the
trees of the field will
clap their hands.
Instead of the
thorn shall come up the
fir tree, and instead of the
brier shall come up the
myrtle tree: and it shall be to the LORD for a name, for an
everlasting sign that shall not be cut off.
Instead of the thornbush, a
cypress will grow, and instead of the
brier, a
myrtle will spring up; they will make a name for the LORD, an
everlasting sign, never to be destroyed.”
Neither let the son of the stranger, that hath joined himself to the LORD, speak, saying, The LORD hath utterly separated me from his people: neither let the
eunuch say, Behold, I am a dry
tree.
Let no foreigner who has joined himself to the LORD say, “The LORD will utterly
exclude me from His people.” And let the
eunuch not say, “I am but a dry
tree.”
Enflaming
yourselves with idols under every green
tree,
slaying the children in the valleys under the clifts of the rocks?
who burn with
lust among the oaks, under every
luxuriant tree, who slaughter your children in the valleys, under the clefts of the rocks?
The way of peace they know not; and there is no judgment in their goings: they have made them
crooked paths:
whosoever goeth therein shall not know peace.
The way of peace they have not known, and there is no justice in their tracks. They have turned them into
crooked paths; no one who
treads on them will know peace.
Then thou shalt see, and flow together, and thine heart shall fear, and be enlarged; because the abundance of the sea shall be converted unto thee, the forces of the Gentiles shall come unto thee.
Then you will look and be
radiant, and your heart will
tremble and swell with joy, because the riches of the sea will be brought to you, and the wealth of the nations will come to you.
The glory of
Lebanon shall come unto thee, the
fir tree, the pine
tree, and the box together, to
beautify the place of my sanctuary; and I will make the place of my feet glorious.
To
appoint unto them that
mourn in
Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for
mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of
heaviness; that they might be called
trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be
glorified.
to
console the mourners in
Zion— to give them a crown of beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for
mourning, and a garment of praise for a spirit of
despair. So they will be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that He may be
glorified.
Wherefore art thou red in thine
apparel, and thy garments like him that
treadeth in the winefat?
Why are Your clothes red, and Your garments like one who treads the winepress?
I have
trodden the winepress alone; and of the people there was none with me: for I will
tread them in mine anger, and
trample them in my
fury; and their blood shall be
sprinkled upon my garments, and I will
stain all my
raiment.
“I have
trodden the winepress alone, and no one from the nations was with Me. I
trampled them in My anger and
trod them down in My
fury; their blood
spattered My garments, and all My clothes were
stained.
