And the cities which ye shall give shall be of the possession of the children of Israel: from them that have many ye shall give many; but from them that have few ye shall give few: every one shall give of his cities unto the Levites according to his inheritance which he inheriteth.
The cities that you
apportion from the territory of the Israelites should be given to the Levites in proportion to the inheritance of each
tribe: more from a larger
tribe and less from a smaller one.”
And they shall be unto you cities for refuge from the
avenger; that the
manslayer die not, until he stand before the congregation in judgment.
You are to have these cities as a refuge from the
avenger, so that the
manslayer will not die until he stands
trial before the assembly.
And if they be married to any of the sons of the other
tribes of the children of Israel, then shall their inheritance be taken from the inheritance of our fathers, and shall be put to the inheritance of the
tribe whereunto they are received: so shall it be taken from the lot of our inheritance.
But if they marry any of the men from the other
tribes of Israel, their inheritance will be withdrawn from the portion of our fathers and added to the
tribe into which they marry. So our
allotted inheritance would be taken away.
And when the jubile of the children of Israel shall be, then shall their inheritance be put unto the inheritance of the
tribe whereunto they are received: so shall their inheritance be taken away from the inheritance of the
tribe of our fathers.
And when the
Jubilee for the Israelites comes, their inheritance will be added to the
tribe into which they marry and taken away from the
tribe of our fathers.”
And Moses commanded the children of Israel according to the word of the LORD, saying, The tribe of the sons of Joseph hath said well.
So at the word of the LORD, Moses commanded the Israelites: “The tribe of the sons of Joseph speaks correctly.
This is the thing which the LORD
doth command concerning the daughters of Zelophehad, saying, Let them marry to whom they think best; only to the family of the
tribe of their father shall they marry.
This is what the LORD has commanded concerning the daughters of Zelophehad: They may marry
anyone they please, provided they marry within a clan of the
tribe of their father.
So shall not the inheritance of the children of Israel remove from tribe to tribe: for every one of the children of Israel shall keep himself to the inheritance of the tribe of his fathers.
No inheritance in Israel may be transferred from tribe to tribe, because each of the Israelites is to retain the inheritance of the tribe of his fathers.
And every daughter, that possesseth an inheritance in any tribe of the children of Israel, shall be wife unto one of the family of the tribe of her father, that the children of Israel may enjoy every man the inheritance of his fathers.
Every daughter who possesses an inheritance from any
Israelite tribe must marry within a clan of the
tribe of her father, so that every
Israelite will possess the inheritance of his fathers.
Neither shall the inheritance remove from one tribe to another tribe; but every one of the tribes of the children of Israel shall keep himself to his own inheritance.
No inheritance may be transferred from one tribe to another, for each tribe of Israel must retain its inheritance.”
And they were married into the families of the sons of
Manasseh the son of Joseph, and their inheritance remained in the
tribe of the family of their father.
They married within the clans of the descendants of
Manasseh son of Joseph, and their inheritance remained within the
tribe of their father’s clan.
Take you wise men, and understanding, and known among your tribes, and I will make them rulers over you.
Choose for
yourselves wise, understanding, and respected men from each of your
tribes, and I will
appoint them as your leaders.”
So I took the chief of your
tribes, wise men, and known, and made them heads over you, captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, and captains over
fifties, and captains over tens, and officers among your
tribes.
So I took the leaders of your
tribes, wise and respected men, and appointed them as leaders over you—as commanders of thousands, of hundreds, of
fifties, and of tens, and as officers for your
tribes.
and the saying pleased me well: and I took twelve men of you, one of a tribe:
The plan seemed good to me, so I selected twelve men from among you, one from each tribe.
And the rest of
Gilead, and all
Bashan, being the kingdom of
Og, gave I unto the half
tribe of
Manasseh; all the region of
Argob, with all
Bashan, which was called the land of giants.
When thou art in
tribulation, and all these things are come upon thee, even in the latter days, if thou turn to the LORD thy God, and shalt be
obedient unto his voice;
When you are in distress and all these things have happened to you, then in later days you will return to the LORD your God and
listen to His voice.
Or hath God
assayed to go and take him a nation from the midst of another nation, by temptations, by signs, and by wonders, and by war, and by a mighty hand, and by a stretched out arm, and by great terrors, according to all that the LORD your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes?
Or has any god tried to take as his own a nation out of another nation—by trials, signs, wonders, and war, by a strong hand and an outstretched arm, and by great terrors—as the LORD your God did for you in Egypt, before your eyes?
And it came to pass, when ye heard the voice out of the midst of the darkness, (for the mountain did burn with fire,) that ye came near unto me, even all the heads of your tribes, and your elders;
And when you heard the voice out of the darkness while the mountain was
blazing with fire, all the heads of your
tribes and your elders approached me,
The great temptations which thine eyes saw, and the signs, and the wonders, and the mighty hand, and the stretched out arm, whereby the LORD thy God brought thee out: so shall the LORD thy God do unto all the people of whom thou art afraid.
the great trials that you saw, the signs and wonders, and the mighty hand and outstretched arm by which the LORD your God brought you out. The LORD your God will do the same to all the peoples you now fear.
At that time the LORD separated the
tribe of Levi, to bear the ark of the covenant of the LORD, to stand before the LORD to minister unto him, and to
bless in his name, unto this day.
At that time the LORD set apart the
tribe of Levi to carry the ark of the covenant of the LORD, to stand before the LORD to serve Him, and to
pronounce blessings in His name, as they do to this day.
But unto the place which the LORD your God shall choose out of all your
tribes to put his name there, even unto his
habitation shall ye seek, and thither thou shalt come:
Instead, you must seek the place the LORD your God will choose from among all your tribes to establish as a dwelling for His Name, and there you must go.
But in the place which the LORD shall choose in one of thy tribes, there thou shalt offer thy burnt offerings, and there thou shalt do all that I command thee.
you must offer them only in the place the LORD will choose in one of your
tribal territories, and there you shall do all that I command you.
And that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams, shall be put to death; because he hath spoken to turn you away from the LORD your God, which brought you out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed you out of the house of
bondage, to thrust thee out of the way which the LORD thy God commanded thee to walk in. So shalt thou put the evil away from the midst of thee.
Such a prophet or dreamer must be put to death, because he has advocated rebellion against the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt and redeemed you from the house of slavery; he has
tried to turn you from the way in which the LORD your God has commanded you to walk. So you must
purge the evil from among you.
And thou shalt keep the feast of weeks unto the LORD thy God with a
tribute of a
freewill offering of thine hand, which thou shalt give unto the LORD thy God, according as the LORD thy God hath blessed thee:
And you shall
celebrate the Feast of Weeks to the LORD your God with a
freewill offering that you give in proportion to how the LORD your God has blessed you,
Judges and officers shalt thou make thee in all thy gates, which the LORD thy God giveth thee, throughout thy tribes: and they shall judge the people with just judgment.
You are to
appoint judges and officials for your
tribes in every town that the LORD your God is giving you. They are to judge the people with righteous judgment.
The priests the Levites, and all the tribe of Levi, shall have no part nor inheritance with Israel: they shall eat the offerings of the LORD made by fire, and his inheritance.
The
Levitical priests—indeed the whole
tribe of Levi—shall have no portion or inheritance with Israel. They are to eat the offerings made by fire to the LORD; that is their inheritance.
For the LORD thy God hath chosen him out of all thy tribes, to stand to minister in the name of the LORD, him and his sons for ever.
For the LORD your God has chosen Levi and his sons out of all your tribes to stand and minister in His name for all time.
And it shall be, if it make thee answer of peace, and open unto thee, then it shall be, that all the people that is found therein shall be tributaries unto thee, and they shall serve thee.
If they accept your offer of peace and open their gates, all the people there will become forced laborers to serve you.
And the priests the sons of Levi shall come near; for them the LORD thy God hath chosen to minister unto him, and to
bless in the name of the LORD; and by their word shall every controversy and every stroke be
tried:
And the priests, the sons of Levi, shall come forward, for the LORD your God has chosen them to serve Him and
pronounce blessings in His name and to give a ruling in every dispute and case of
assault.
Then thou shalt bring her home to thine house; and she shall
shave her head, and
pare her
nails;
then you shall bring her into your house. She must
shave her head,
trim her
nails,
These shall stand upon mount
Gerizim to
bless the people, when ye are come over Jordan;
Simeon, and Levi, and Judah, and
Issachar, and Joseph, and Benjamin:
“When you have crossed the Jordan, these
tribes shall stand on Mount
Gerizim to
bless the people:
Simeon, Levi, Judah,
Issachar, Joseph, and Benjamin.
The great temptations which thine eyes have seen, the signs, and those great miracles:
You saw with your own eyes the great
trials, and those
miraculous signs and wonders.
And we took their land, and gave it for an inheritance unto the Reubenites, and to the Gadites, and to the half
tribe of
Manasseh.
We took their land and gave it as an inheritance to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-
tribe of
Manasseh.
Ye stand this day all of you before the LORD your God; your captains of your tribes, your elders, and your officers, with all the men of Israel,
All of you are standing
today before the LORD your God—you leaders of
tribes, elders, officials, and all the men of Israel,
Lest there should be among you man, or woman, or family, or
tribe, whose heart turneth away this day from the LORD our God, to go and serve the gods of these nations; lest there should be among you a root that beareth gall and
wormwood;
Make sure there is no man or woman, clan or
tribe among you
today whose heart turns away from the LORD our God to go and worship the gods of those nations. Make sure there is no root among you that bears such poisonous and bitter fruit,
And the LORD shall separate him unto evil out of all the tribes of Israel, according to all the curses of the covenant that are written in this book of the law:
and single him out from all the
tribes of Israel for
disaster, according to all the curses of the covenant written in this Book of the Law.
Gather unto me all the elders of your tribes, and your officers, that I may speak these words in their ears, and call heaven and earth to record against them.
Assemble before me all the elders of your
tribes and all your officers so that I may speak these words in their hearing and call heaven and earth to witness against them.
And he was king in
Jeshurun, when the heads of the people and the
tribes of Israel were gathered together.
So the LORD became King in
Jeshurun when the leaders of the people gathered, when the
tribes of Israel came together.
And to the Reubenites, and to the Gadites, and to half the
tribe of
Manasseh, spake Joshua, saying,
But to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-
tribe of
Manasseh, Joshua said,
Now therefore take you twelve men out of the tribes of Israel, out of every tribe a man.
Now choose twelve men from the tribes of Israel, one from each tribe.
Take you twelve men out of the people, out of every tribe a man,
“Choose twelve men from among the people, one from each tribe,
Then Joshua called the twelve men, whom he had prepared of the children of Israel, out of every tribe a man:
So Joshua summoned the twelve men he had appointed from the Israelites, one from each tribe,
And Joshua said unto them, Pass over before the ark of the LORD your God into the midst of Jordan, and take ye up every man of you a stone upon his shoulder, according unto the number of the tribes of the children of Israel:
and said to them, “Cross over before the ark of the LORD your God into the middle of the Jordan. Each of you is to take a stone upon his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of Israel,
And the children of Israel did so as Joshua commanded, and took up twelve stones out of the midst of Jordan, as the LORD spake unto Joshua, according to the number of the
tribes of the children of Israel, and carried them over with them unto the place where they
lodged, and laid them down there.
Thus the Israelites did as Joshua had commanded them. They took up twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan, one for each tribe of Israel, just as the LORD had told Joshua; and they carried them to the camp, where they set them down.
And the children of
Reuben, and the children of
Gad, and half the
tribe of
Manasseh, passed over armed before the children of Israel, as Moses spake unto them:
The Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-
tribe of
Manasseh crossed over before the Israelites, armed for battle as Moses had
instructed them.
But the children of Israel committed a
trespass in the
accursed thing: for
Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the
tribe of Judah, took of the
accursed thing: and the anger of the LORD was
kindled against the children of Israel.
The Israelites, however, acted unfaithfully regarding the things devoted to destruction.
Achan son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the
tribe of Judah, took some of what was set apart. So the anger of the LORD burned against the Israelites.
In the morning therefore ye shall be brought according to your tribes: and it shall be, that the tribe which the LORD taketh shall come according to the families thereof; and the family which the LORD shall take shall come by households; and the household which the LORD shall take shall come man by man.
In the morning you must present
yourselves tribe by
tribe. The
tribe that the LORD selects shall come forward clan by clan, and the clan that the LORD selects shall come forward family by family, and the family that the LORD selects shall come forward man by man.
So Joshua rose up early in the morning, and brought Israel by their tribes; and the tribe of Judah was taken:
So Joshua arose early the next morning and had Israel come forward tribe by tribe, and the tribe of Judah was selected.
And he brought his household man by man; and
Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the
tribe of Judah, was taken.
And he had the family of Zabdi come forward man by man, and
Achan son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the
tribe of Judah, was selected.
So Joshua took the whole land, according to all that the LORD said unto Moses; and Joshua gave it for an inheritance unto Israel according to their divisions by their tribes. And the land rested from war.
So Joshua took the entire land, in keeping with all that the LORD had spoken to Moses. And Joshua gave it as an inheritance to Israel according to the allotments to their tribes. Then the land had rest from war.
Them did Moses the servant of the LORD and the children of Israel
smite: and Moses the servant of the LORD gave it for a possession unto the Reubenites, and the Gadites, and the half
tribe of
Manasseh.
Moses, the servant of the LORD, and the Israelites had struck them down and given their land as an inheritance to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-
tribe of
Manasseh.
And these are the kings of the country which Joshua and the children of Israel
smote on this side Jordan on the west, from
Baal-
gad in the valley of
Lebanon even unto the mount Halak, that goeth up to
Seir; which Joshua gave unto the
tribes of Israel for a possession according to their divisions;
And these are the kings of the land that Joshua and the Israelites conquered beyond the Jordan to the west, from
Baal-
gad in the Valley of
Lebanon to Mount Halak, which rises toward
Seir (according to the allotments to the
tribes of Israel, Joshua gave them as an inheritance
Now therefore divide this land for an inheritance unto the nine
tribes, and the half
tribe of
Manasseh,
Now therefore divide this land as an inheritance to the nine
tribes and the half-
tribe of
Manasseh.”
Only unto the tribe of Levi he gave none inheritance; the sacrifices of the LORD God of Israel made by fire are their inheritance, as he said unto them.
To the tribe of Levi, however, Moses had given no inheritance. The offerings made by fire to the LORD, the God of Israel, are their inheritance, just as He had promised them.
And Moses gave unto the
tribe of the children of
Reuben inheritance according to their families.
This is what Moses had given to the clans of the
tribe of
Reuben:
And Moses gave inheritance unto the
tribe of
Gad, even unto the children of
Gad according to their families.
This is what Moses had given to the clans of the
tribe of
Gad:
And Moses gave inheritance unto the half
tribe of
Manasseh: and this was the possession of the half
tribe of the children of
Manasseh by their families.
This is what Moses had given to the clans of the half-
tribe of
Manasseh, that is, to half the
tribe of the descendants of
Manasseh:
But unto the tribe of Levi Moses gave not any inheritance: the LORD God of Israel was their inheritance, as he said unto them.
To the tribe of Levi, however, Moses had given no inheritance. The LORD, the God of Israel, is their inheritance, just as He had promised them.
And these are the countries which the children of Israel inherited in the land of
Canaan, which
Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of
Nun, and the heads of the fathers of the
tribes of the children of Israel, distributed for inheritance to them.
Now these are the portions that the Israelites inherited in the land of
Canaan, as distributed by
Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of
Nun, and the heads of the families of the
tribes of Israel.
By lot was their inheritance, as the LORD commanded by the hand of Moses, for the nine tribes, and for the half tribe.
Their inheritance was assigned by lot for the nine and a half tribes, as the LORD had commanded through Moses.
For Moses had given the inheritance of two tribes and an half tribe on the other side Jordan: but unto the Levites he gave none inheritance among them.
For Moses had given the inheritance east of the Jordan to the other two and a half tribes. But he granted no inheritance among them to the Levites.
For the children of Joseph were two
tribes,
Manasseh and Ephraim: therefore they gave no part unto the Levites in the land, save cities to dwell in, with their suburbs for their cattle and for their substance.
The descendants of Joseph became two
tribes,
Manasseh and Ephraim. And no portion of the land was given to the Levites, except for cities in which to live, along with pasturelands for their flocks and herds.
This then was the lot of the
tribe of the children of Judah by their families; even to the border of
Edom the wilderness of Zin southward was the
uttermost part of the south coast.
Now the
allotment for the clans of the
tribe of Judah extended to the border of
Edom, to the Wilderness of Zin at the extreme southern boundary:
This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Judah according to their families.
This is the inheritance of the clans of the tribe of Judah.
And the
uttermost cities of the
tribe of the children of Judah toward the coast of
Edom southward were Kabzeel, and Eder, and Jagur,
These were the
southernmost cities of the
tribe of Judah in the Negev toward the border of
Edom:
The border went out from Tappuah westward unto the river Kanah; and the goings out thereof were at the sea. This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Ephraim by their families.
From Tappuah the border went westward to the
Brook of Kanah and ended at the Sea. This was the inheritance of the clans of the
tribe of Ephraim,
But they did not drive out the
Canaanites who lived in
Gezer. So the
Canaanites dwell among the Ephraimites to this day, but they are forced laborers.
Yet it came to pass, when the children of Israel were
waxen strong, that they put the
Canaanites to
tribute; but did not utterly drive them out.
However, when the Israelites grew stronger, they put the
Canaanites to forced labor; but they failed to drive them out completely.
And there remained among the children of Israel seven tribes, which had not yet received their inheritance.
there were still seven tribes of Israel who had not yet received their inheritance.
Give out from among you three men for each tribe: and I will send them, and they shall rise, and go through the land, and describe it according to the inheritance of them; and they shall come again to me.
Appoint three men from each
tribe, and I will send them out to survey the land and map it out, according to the inheritance of each. Then they will return to me
But the Levites have no part among you; for the priesthood of the LORD is their inheritance: and
Gad, and
Reuben, and half the
tribe of
Manasseh, have received their inheritance beyond Jordan on the east, which Moses the servant of the LORD gave them.
The Levites, however, have no portion among you, because their inheritance is the priesthood of the LORD. And
Gad,
Reuben, and half the
tribe of
Manasseh have already received the inheritance that Moses the servant of the LORD gave them beyond the Jordan to the east.”
And the lot of the tribe of the children of Benjamin came up according to their families: and the coast of their lot came forth between the children of Judah and the children of Joseph.
The first lot came up for the clans of the
tribe of Benjamin. Their
allotted territory lay between the
tribes of Judah and Joseph:
And Jordan was the border of it on the east side. This was the inheritance of the children of Benjamin, by the coasts thereof round about, according to their families.
On the east side the border was the Jordan. These were the borders around the inheritance of the clans of the tribe of Benjamin.
Now the cities of the
tribe of the children of Benjamin according to their families were
Jericho, and Beth-hoglah, and the valley of Keziz,
These were the cities of the clans of the tribe of Benjamin:
And Zelah, Eleph, and Jebusi, which is Jerusalem, Gibeath, and Kirjath; fourteen cities with their villages. This is the inheritance of the children of Benjamin according to their families.
Zelah, Haeleph,
Jebus (that is, Jerusalem), Gibeah, and Kiriath-jearim—fourteen cities, along with their villages. This was the inheritance of the clans of the
tribe of Benjamin.
And the second lot came forth to
Simeon, even for the
tribe of the children of
Simeon according to their families: and their inheritance was within the inheritance of the children of Judah.
The second lot came out for the clans of the
tribe of
Simeon:
And all the villages that were round about these cities to Baalath-beer, Ramath of the south. This is the inheritance of the
tribe of the children of
Simeon according to their families.
and all the villages surrounding these cities as far as Baalath-beer (
Ramah of the Negev). This was the inheritance of the clans of the
tribe of
Simeon.
And the third lot came up for the children of
Zebulun according to their families: and the border of their inheritance was unto Sarid:
The third lot came up for the clans of the
tribe of
Zebulun:
This is the inheritance of the children of
Zebulun according to their families, these cities with their villages.
This was the inheritance of the clans of the
tribe of
Zebulun, including these cities and their villages.
And the fourth lot came out to
Issachar, for the children of
Issachar according to their families.
The fourth lot came out for the clans of the
tribe of
Issachar:
This is the inheritance of the
tribe of the children of
Issachar according to their families, the cities and their villages.
This was the inheritance of the clans of the
tribe of
Issachar, including these cities and their villages.
And the fifth lot came out for the tribe of the children of Asher according to their families.
The fifth lot came out for the clans of the tribe of Asher:
This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Asher according to their families, these cities with their villages.
This was the inheritance of the clans of the tribe of Asher, including these cities and their villages.
The sixth lot came out to the children of
Naphtali, even for the children of
Naphtali according to their families.
The sixth lot came out for the clans of the
tribe of
Naphtali:
This is the inheritance of the
tribe of the children of
Naphtali according to their families, the cities and their villages.
This was the inheritance of the clans of the
tribe of
Naphtali, including these cities and their villages.
And the seventh lot came out for the
tribe of the children of
Dan according to their families.
The seventh lot came out for the clans of the
tribe of
Dan:
This is the inheritance of the
tribe of the children of
Dan according to their families, these cities with their villages.
This was the inheritance of the clans of the
tribe of
Dan, including these cities and their villages.
These are the inheritances which
Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of
Nun, and the heads of the fathers of the
tribes of the children of Israel, divided for an inheritance by lot in
Shiloh before the LORD, at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. So they made an end of dividing the country.
These are the inheritances that
Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of
Nun, and the heads of the families distributed by lot to the
tribes of Israel at
Shiloh before the LORD at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting. So they finished dividing up the land.
And he shall dwell in that city, until he stand before the congregation for judgment, and until the death of the high priest that shall be in those days: then shall the
slayer return, and come unto his own city, and unto his own house, unto the city from whence he fled.
He is to stay in that city until he stands
trial before the assembly and until the death of the high priest serving at that time. Then the
manslayer may return to his own home in the city from which he fled.”
