Of the children of
Simeon, mighty men of valour for the
war, seven thousand and one hundred.
From
Simeon: 7,100 mighty men of
valor, ready for battle.
And of the children of Benjamin, the kindred of Saul, three thousand: for hitherto the greatest part of them had kept the ward of the house of Saul.
From Benjamin, the
kinsmen of Saul: 3,000, most of whom had remained
loyal to the house of Saul up to that time.
Of
Zebulun, such as went forth to battle,
expert in
war, with all instruments of
war, fifty thousand, which could keep rank: they were not of double heart.
From
Zebulun: 50,000 fit for service, trained for battle with all kinds of weapons of
war, who with one purpose were devoted to David.
And of the Danites
expert in
war twenty and eight thousand and six hundred.
From
Dan: 28,600 prepared for battle.
And of Asher, such as went forth to battle,
expert in
war, forty thousand.
From Asher: 40,000 fit for service, prepared for battle.
And on the other side of Jordan, of the Reubenites, and the Gadites, and of the half tribe of
Manasseh, with all manner of instruments of
war for the battle, an hundred and twenty thousand.
And from east of the Jordan, from
Reuben,
Gad, and the half-tribe of
Manasseh there: 120,000 armed with every kind of weapon of
war.
All these men of
war, that could keep rank, came with a perfect heart to
Hebron, to make David king over all Israel: and all the rest also of Israel were of one heart to make David king.
All these men of
war,
arrayed for battle, came to
Hebron fully determined to make David king over all Israel. And all the rest of the Israelites were of one mind to make David king.
He sent Hadoram his son to king David, to
enquire of his
welfare, and to
congratulate him, because he had fought against Hadarezer, and
smitten him; (for Hadarezer had
war with Tou;) and with him all manner of vessels of gold and silver and brass.
he sent his son Hadoram to
greet King David and
bless him for fighting and defeating Hadadezer, who had been at
war with Tou. Hadoram brought all kinds of articles of gold and silver and bronze,
And it came to pass, that after the year was
expired, at the time that kings go out to battle,
Joab led forth the power of the army, and wasted the country of the children of
Ammon, and came and besieged Rabbah. But David
tarried at Jerusalem. And
Joab smote Rabbah, and destroyed it.
In the spring, at the time when kings march out to
war,
Joab led out the army and
ravaged the land of the
Ammonites. He came to Rabbah and besieged it, but David remained in Jerusalem. And
Joab attacked Rabbah and
demolished it.
And it came to pass after this, that there arose
war at
Gezer with the Philistines; at which time Sibbechai the Hushathite
slew Sippai, that was of the children of the
giant: and they were subdued.
Some time later,
war broke out with the Philistines at
Gezer. At that time Sibbecai the Hushathite killed Sippai, a
descendant of the
Rephaim, and the Philistines were subdued.
And there was
war again with the Philistines; and Elhanan the son of
Jair slew Lahmi the brother of
Goliath the Gittite, whose
spear staff was like a
weaver’s beam.
Once again there was a battle with the Philistines, and Elhanan son of
Jair killed Lahmi the brother of
Goliath the Gittite, the shaft of whose
spear was like a
weaver’s beam.
And yet again there was
war at
Gath, where was a man of great
stature, whose fingers and toes were four and twenty, six on each hand, and six on each foot: and he also was the son of the
giant.
And there was still another battle at
Gath, where there was a man of great
stature with six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot—twenty-four in all. He too was descended from Rapha,
But the word of the LORD came to me, saying, Thou hast shed blood abundantly, and hast made great wars: thou shalt not build an house unto my name, because thou hast shed much blood upon the earth in my sight.
but this word of the LORD came to me: ‘You have shed much blood and
waged great
wars. You are not to build a house for My Name because you have shed so much blood on the ground before Me.
And they cast lots, ward against ward, as well the small as the great, the teacher as the scholar.
They cast lots for their duties, young and old alike, teacher as well as pupil.
Among these were the divisions of the
porters, even among the chief men, having
wards one against another, to minister in the house of the LORD.
These divisions of the gatekeepers, through their chief men, had duties for ministering in the house of the LORD, just as their brothers did.
To Shuppim and Hosah the lot came forth westward, with the gate Shallecheth, by the
causeway of the going up,
ward against
ward.
The lots for the West Gate and the Shallecheth Gate on the ascending
highway fell to Shuppim and Hosah. There were guards stationed at every watch.
But God said unto me, Thou shalt not build an house for my name, because thou hast been a man of war, and hast shed blood.
but God said to me, ‘You are not to build a house for My Name, because you are a man of
war who has
spilled blood.’
If thy people go out to war against their enemies by the way that thou shalt send them, and they pray unto thee toward this city which thou hast chosen, and the house which I have built for thy name;
When Your people go to war against their enemies, wherever You send them, and when they pray to You in the direction of the city You have chosen and the house I have built for Your Name,
But of the children of Israel did Solomon make no servants for his work; but they were men of
war, and chief of his captains, and captains of his
chariots and
horsemen.
But Solomon did not
consign any of the Israelites to slave labor, because they were his men of
war, his officers and captains, and the commanders of his
chariots and cavalry.
And when
Rehoboam was come to Jerusalem, he gathered of the house of Judah and Benjamin an hundred and
fourscore thousand chosen men, which were
warriors, to fight against Israel, that he might bring the kingdom again to
Rehoboam.
When
Rehoboam arrived in Jerusalem, he
mobilized the house of Judah and Benjamin—180,000 chosen
warriors—to fight against Israel and restore the kingdom to
Rehoboam.
Now the acts of
Rehoboam, from first to last, are they not written in the records of Shemaiah the Prophet and of
Iddo the
Seer concerning the
genealogies? There was
war between
Rehoboam and
Jeroboam throughout their days.
He reigned three years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name also was Michaiah the daughter of Uriel of Gibeah. And there was
war between
Abijah and
Jeroboam.
and he reigned in Jerusalem three years. His mother’s name was Micaiah daughter of Uriel; she was from Gibeah. And there was
war between
Abijah and
Jeroboam.
And
Abijah set the battle in
array with an army of
valiant men of
war, even four hundred thousand chosen men:
Jeroboam also set the battle in
array against him with eight hundred thousand chosen men, being mighty men of valour.
Abijah went into battle with an army of 400,000 chosen men, while
Jeroboam drew up in formation against him with 800,000 chosen and mighty men of
valor.
And he built
fenced cities in Judah: for the land had rest, and he had no
war in those years; because the LORD had given him rest.
Because the land was at peace,
Asa built fortified cities in Judah. In those days no one made
war with him, because the LORD had given him rest.
And there was no more
war unto the five and
thirtieth year of the reign of
Asa.
And there was no
war until the thirty-fifth year of
Asa’s reign.
For the eyes of the LORD run to and
fro throughout the whole earth, to
shew himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him.
Herein thou hast done
foolishly: therefore from henceforth thou shalt have
wars.
For the eyes of the LORD
roam to and
fro over all the earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose hearts are fully devoted to Him. You have acted
foolishly in this matter. From now on, therefore, you will be at
war.”
And the fear of the LORD fell upon all the kingdoms of the lands that were round about Judah, so that they made no
war against
Jehoshaphat.
And the
dread of the LORD fell upon all the kingdoms of the lands that surrounded Judah, so that they did not make
war against
Jehoshaphat.
And he had much business in the cities of Judah: and the men of war, mighty men of valour, were in Jerusalem.
and kept vast supplies in the cities of Judah. He also had
warriors in Jerusalem who were mighty men of
valor.
And next him was Jehozabad, and with him an hundred and
fourscore thousand ready prepared for the
war.
and next to him, Jehozabad, and with him 180,000 armed for battle.
And
Ahab king of Israel said unto
Jehoshaphat king of Judah,
Wilt thou go with me to
Ramoth-
gilead? And he answered him, I am as thou art, and my people as thy people; and we will be with thee in the
war.
Ahab king of Israel asked
Jehoshaphat king of Judah, “Will you go with me against
Ramoth-
gilead?” And
Jehoshaphat replied, “I am like you, and my people are your people; we will join you in the
war.”
Therefore the king of Israel gathered together of prophets four hundred men, and said unto them, Shall we go to
Ramoth-
gilead to battle, or shall I
forbear? And they said, Go up; for God will deliver it into the king’s hand.
So the king of Israel assembled the prophets, four hundred men, and asked them, “Should we go to
war against
Ramoth-
gilead, or should we
refrain?” “Go up,” they replied, “and God will deliver it into the hand of the king.”
And when he was come to the king, the king said unto him, Micaiah, shall we go to
Ramoth-
gilead to battle, or shall I
forbear? And he said, Go ye up, and
prosper, and they shall be delivered into your hand.
When Micaiah arrived, the king asked him, “Micaiah, should we go to
war against
Ramoth-
gilead, or should we
refrain?” “Go up and triumph,” Micaiah replied, “for they will be given into your hand.”
And what cause
soever shall come to you of your brethren that dwell in their cities, between blood and blood, between law and commandment, statutes and judgments, ye shall even
warn them that they
trespass not against the LORD, and so wrath come upon you, and upon your brethren: this do, and ye shall not
trespass.
For every dispute that comes before you from your brothers who dwell in their cities—whether it regards
bloodshed or some other
violation of law, commandments, statutes, or ordinances—you are to
warn them, so that they will not
incur guilt before the LORD and wrath will not come upon you and your brothers. Do this, and you will not
incur guilt.
It came to pass after this also, that the children of Moab, and the children of
Ammon, and with them other beside the
Ammonites, came against
Jehoshaphat to battle.
After this, the Moabites and
Ammonites, together with some of the Meunites, came to make
war against
Jehoshaphat.
And they came up into Judah, and
brake into it, and carried away all the substance that was found in the king’s house, and his sons also, and his wives; so that there was never a son left him, save
Jehoahaz, the youngest of his sons.
So they went to
war against Judah, invaded it, and carried off all the possessions found in the king’s palace, along with his sons and wives; not a son was left to him except
Jehoahaz, his youngest.
He walked also after their counsel, and went with Jehoram the son of
Ahab king of Israel to
war against
Hazael king of Syria at
Ramoth-
gilead: and the Syrians
smote Joram.
And it came to pass at the end of the year, that the host of Syria came up against him: and they came to Judah and Jerusalem, and destroyed all the princes of the people from among the people, and sent all the
spoil of them unto the king of Damascus.
In the spring, the army of
Aram went to
war against
Joash. They entered Judah and Jerusalem and destroyed all the leaders of the people, and they sent all the
plunder to their king in Damascus.
Moreover
Amaziah gathered Judah together, and made them captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, according to the houses of their fathers, throughout all Judah and Benjamin: and he numbered them from twenty years old and above, and found them three hundred thousand choice men, able to go forth to
war, that could handle
spear and shield.
Then
Amaziah gathered the people of Judah and assigned them according to their families to commanders of thousands and of hundreds. And he numbered those twenty years of age or older throughout Judah and Benjamin and found 300,000 chosen men able to serve in the army, bearing the
spear and shield.
He
hired also an hundred thousand mighty men of valour out of Israel for an hundred talents of silver.
He also
hired 100,000 mighty
warriors from Israel for a hundred talents of silver.
And he went forth and
warred against the Philistines, and
brake down the wall of
Gath, and the wall of Jabneh, and the wall of
Ashdod, and built cities about
Ashdod, and among the Philistines.
Uzziah went out to
wage war against the Philistines, and he
tore down the walls of
Gath, Jabneh, and
Ashdod. Then he built cities near
Ashdod and among the Philistines.
Moreover Uzziah had an host of fighting men, that went out to
war by bands, according to the number of their account by the hand of Jeiel the
scribe and Maaseiah the ruler, under the hand of Hananiah, one of the king’s captains.
Uzziah had an army ready for battle that went out to
war by assigned divisions, as recorded by Jeiel the
scribe and Maaseiah the officer under the direction of Hananiah, one of the royal officers.
And under their hand was an army, three hundred thousand and seven thousand and five hundred, that made war with mighty power, to help the king against the enemy.
Under their authority was an army of 307,500 trained for war, a powerful force to support the king against his enemies.
He fought also with the king of the
Ammonites, and prevailed against them. And the children of
Ammon gave him the same year an hundred talents of silver, and ten thousand measures of wheat, and ten thousand of barley. So much did the children of
Ammon pay unto him, both the second year, and the third.
Jotham
waged war against the king of the
Ammonites and defeated them, and that year they gave him a hundred talents of silver, ten thousand cors of wheat, and ten thousand cors of barley. They paid him the same in the second and third years.
Now the rest of the acts of Jotham, and all his wars, and his ways, lo, they are written in the book of the kings of Israel and Judah.
As for the rest of the acts of Jotham, along with all his wars and his ways, they are indeed written in the Book of the Kings of Israel and Judah.
Then certain of the heads of the children of Ephraim,
Azariah the son of Johanan, Berechiah the son of Meshillemoth, and Jehizkiah the son of Shallum, and
Amasa the son of Hadlai, stood up against them that came from the
war,
Then some of the leaders of the Ephraimites—
Azariah son of Jehohanan, Berechiah son of Meshillemoth, Jehizkiah son of Shallum, and
Amasa son of Hadlai—stood in opposition to those arriving from the
war.
And when
Hezekiah saw that
Sennacherib was come, and that he was purposed to fight against Jerusalem,
And he set captains of
war over the people, and gathered them together to him in the street of the gate of the city, and spake
comfortably to them, saying,
Hezekiah appointed military commanders over the people and gathered the people in the square of the city gate. Then he encouraged them, saying,
Now after this he built a wall without the city of David, on the west side of
Gihon, in the valley, even to the entering in at the fish gate, and compassed about Ophel, and raised it up a very great height, and put captains of
war in all the
fenced cities of Judah.
After this,
Manasseh rebuilt the outer wall of the City of David from west of
Gihon in the valley to the entrance of the Fish Gate, and he brought it around the hill of Ophel and
heightened it considerably. He also stationed military commanders in all the fortified cities of Judah.
And Hilkiah, and they that the king had appointed, went to Huldah the
prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of Tikvath, the son of Hasrah, keeper of the
wardrobe; (now she dwelt in Jerusalem in the college:) and they spake to her to that effect.
So Hilkiah and those the king had designated went and spoke to Huldah the
prophetess, the wife of Shallum son of Tokhath, the son of Hasrah, the keeper of the
wardrobe. She lived in Jerusalem, in the Second District.
But he sent ambassadors to him, saying, What have I to do with thee, thou king of Judah? I come not against thee this day, but against the house
wherewith I have
war: for God commanded me to make
haste:
forbear thee from
meddling with God, who is with me, that he destroy thee not.
But Neco sent messengers to him, saying, “What is the issue between you and me, O king of Judah? I have not come against you
today, but I am fighting another dynasty. God told me to
hurry; so stop
opposing God, who is with me, or He will destroy you!”
Our kings and leaders and priests and fathers did not obey Your law or
listen to Your commandments and
warnings that You gave them.
And if the people of the land bring
ware or any
victuals on the sabbath day to sell, that we would not
buy it of them on the sabbath, or on the holy day: and that we would leave the seventh year, and the
exaction of every debt.
When the people of the land bring
merchandise or any kind of grain to sell on the Sabbath day, we will not
buy from them on a Sabbath or holy day. Every seventh year we will let the fields lie
fallow, and will
cancel every debt.
And the chief of the Levites: Hashabiah, Sherebiah, and Jeshua the son of Kadmiel, with their brethren over against them, to praise and to give
thanks, according to the commandment of David the man of God,
ward over against
ward.
The leaders of the Levites were Hashabiah, Sherebiah, and Jeshua son of Kadmiel, along with their associates, who stood across from them to give praise and
thanksgiving as one section alternated with the other, as prescribed by David the man of God.
Mattaniah, and Bakbukiah,
Obadiah, Meshullam, Talmon, Akkub, were
porters keeping the
ward at the thresholds of the gates.
Mattaniah, Bakbukiah,
Obadiah, Meshullam, Talmon, and Akkub were gatekeepers who guarded the storerooms at the gates.
And both the singers and the
porters kept the
ward of their God, and the
ward of the
purification, according to the commandment of David, and of Solomon his son.
They performed the service of their God and the service of
purification, along with the singers and gatekeepers, as David and his son Solomon had prescribed.
In those days saw I in Judah some
treading winepresses on the sabbath, and bringing in
sheaves, and
lading asses; as also wine, grapes, and figs, and all manner of burdens, which they brought into Jerusalem on the sabbath day: and I
testified against them in the day wherein they sold
victuals.
In those days I saw people in Judah
treading winepresses on the Sabbath and bringing in grain and loading it on
donkeys, along with wine, grapes, and figs. All kinds of goods were being brought into Jerusalem on the Sabbath day. So I
warned them against selling food on that day.
There dwelt men of Tyre also therein, which brought fish, and all manner of ware, and sold on the sabbath unto the children of Judah, and in Jerusalem.
Additionally, men of Tyre who lived there were importing fish and all kinds of
merchandise and selling them on the Sabbath to the people of Judah in Jerusalem.
So the merchants and sellers of all kind of
ware lodged without Jerusalem once or twice.
Once or twice, the merchants and those who sell all kinds of goods camped outside Jerusalem,
Then I
testified against them, and said unto them, Why
lodge ye about the wall? if ye do so again, I will lay hands on you. From that time forth came they no more on the sabbath.
but I
warned them, “Why are you camping in front of the wall? If you do it again, I will lay hands on you.” From that time on, they did not return on the Sabbath.
Thus
cleansed I them from all strangers, and appointed the
wards of the priests and the Levites, every one in his business;
Thus I
purified the priests and Levites from everything foreign, and I assigned specific duties to each of the priests and Levites.
Now it came to pass, when they spake daily unto him, and he
hearkened not unto them, that they told
Haman, to see whether
Mordecai’s matters would stand: for he had told them that he was a
Jew.
In famine he shall
redeem thee from death: and in
war from the power of the sword.
In famine He will
redeem you from death, and in battle from the stroke of the sword.
What time they wax
warm, they
vanish: when it is hot, they are consumed out of their place.
but ceasing in the dry season and
vanishing from their channels in the heat.
Thou renewest thy witnesses against me, and increasest thine
indignation upon me; changes and
war are against me.
You produce new witnesses against me and multiply Your anger toward me. Hardships
assault me in wave after wave.
He breaketh me with breach upon breach, he runneth upon me like a
giant.
He breaks me with wound upon wound; He rushes me like a mighty
warrior.
Though he
heap up silver as the dust, and prepare
raiment as the clay;
Though he heaps up silver like dust and piles up a
wardrobe like clay,
If his loins have not blessed me, and if he were not
warmed with the
fleece of my sheep;
if his heart has not blessed me for
warming him with the
fleece of my sheep,
Then he openeth the ears of men, and sealeth their instruction,
He opens their ears and terrifies them with warnings
How thy garments are warm, when he quieteth the earth by the south wind?
You whose clothes get hot when the land lies
hushed under the south wind,
Which I have reserved against the time of trouble, against the day of battle and war?
which I hold in reserve for times of trouble, for the day of war and battle?
Which leaveth her eggs in the earth, and warmeth them in dust,
For she leaves her eggs on the ground and lets them warm in the sand.
At the blast of the horn, he snorts with
fervor. He catches the
scent of battle from
afar— the shouts of captains and the cry of
war.
He teacheth my hands to war, so that a bow of steel is broken by mine arms.
He trains my hands for battle; my arms can bend a bow of bronze.
His going forth is from the end of the heaven, and his circuit unto the ends of it: and there is nothing
hid from the heat thereof.
it rises at one end of the heavens and runs its circuit to the other; nothing is deprived of its
warmth.
Moreover by them is thy servant
warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward.
By them indeed Your servant is
warned; in keeping them is great reward.
Though an host should
encamp against me, my heart shall not fear: though
war should rise against me, in this will I be
confident.
Though an army encamps around me, my heart will not fear; though a war breaks out against me, I will keep my trust.
There is no king saved by the multitude of an host: a mighty man is not delivered by much strength.
No king is saved by his vast army; no
warrior is delivered by his great strength.
Many, O LORD my God, are thy wonderful works which thou hast done, and thy thoughts which are to us-ward: they cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee: if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered.
Many, O LORD my God, are the wonders You have done, and the plans You have for us— none can compare to You— if I
proclaim and declare them, they are more than I can count.
Gird thy sword upon thy
thigh, O most mighty, with thy glory and thy majesty.
He maketh
wars to cease unto the end of the earth; he breaketh the bow, and cutteth the
spear in
sunder; he burneth the
chariot in the fire.
He makes
wars to cease throughout the earth; He breaks the bow and
shatters the
spear; He burns the shields in the fire.
The words of his mouth were smoother than butter, but war was in his heart: his words were softer than oil, yet were they drawn swords.
His speech is smooth as butter, but
war is in his heart. His words are softer than oil, yet they are swords
unsheathed.
Rebuke the company of
spearmen, the multitude of the bulls, with the
calves of the people, till every one submit himself with pieces of silver:
scatter thou the people that delight in
war.
Rebuke the beast in the reeds, the
herd of bulls among the
calves of the nations, until it submits, bringing bars of silver.
Scatter the nations who delight in
war.
There
brake he the arrows of the bow, the shield, and the sword, and the battle.
Selah.
There He
shattered the flaming arrows, the shield and sword and weapons of
war.
Selah Then the Lord
awaked as one out of sleep, and like a mighty man that shouteth by reason of wine.
Then the Lord
awoke as from sleep, like a mighty
warrior overcome by wine.
Hear, O My people, and I will
warn you: O Israel, if only you would
listen to Me!
Then thou spakest in vision to thy holy one, and saidst, I have laid help upon one that is mighty; I have
exalted one chosen out of the people.
You once spoke in a vision; to Your godly ones You said, “I have bestowed help on a
warrior; I have
exalted one chosen from the people.
Sharp arrows of the mighty, with coals of
juniper.
Sharp arrows will come from the
warrior, with burning coals of the
broom tree!
I am for peace: but when I speak, they are for war.
I am in favor of peace; but when I speak, they want war.
As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth.
Like arrows in the hand of a
warrior, so are children born in one’s youth.
Which imagine mischiefs in their heart; continually are they gathered together for war.
who
devise evil in their hearts and
stir up
war all day long.
Blessed be the LORD my strength, which teacheth my hands to war, and my fingers to fight:
Blessed be the LORD, my Rock, who trains my hands for war, my fingers for battle.
He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city.
He who is slow to anger is better than a
warrior, and he who controls his temper is greater than one who captures a city.
Every purpose is established by counsel: and with good advice make war.
For by wise counsel thou shalt make thy war: and in multitude of counsellors there is safety.
Only with sound guidance should you
wage war, and victory lies in a multitude of counselors.
A time to love, and a time to
hate; a time of
war, and a time of peace.
a time to love and a time to
hate, a time for
war and a time for peace.
Again, if two lie together, then they have heat: but how can one be warm alone?
Again, if two lie down together, they will keep warm; but how can one keep warm alone?
Better is a poor and a wise child than an old and
foolish king, who will no more be
admonished.
Better is a poor but wise youth than an old but
foolish king who no longer knows how to take a
warning.
It is good that thou shouldest take hold of this;
yea, also from this withdraw not thine hand: for he that feareth God shall come forth of them all.
It is good to
grasp the one and not let the other slip from your hand. For he who fears God will follow both
warnings.
There is no man that hath power over the spirit to retain the spirit; neither hath he power in the day of death: and there is no discharge in that war; neither shall wickedness deliver those that are given to it.
As no man has power over the wind to contain it, so no one has authority over his day of death. As no one can be discharged in wartime, so wickedness will not release those who practice it.
Wisdom is better than weapons of
war: but one
sinner destroyeth much good.
Wisdom is better than weapons of
war, but one
sinner destroys much good.
