And further, by these, my son, be
admonished: of making many books there is no end; and much study is a
weariness of the flesh.
And by these, my son, be further
warned: There is no end to the making of many books, and much study wearies the body.
They all hold swords, being
expert in
war: every man hath his sword upon his
thigh because of fear in the night.
All are skilled with the sword, experienced in warfare. Each has his sword at his side prepared for the terror of the night.
Thy neck is like the tower of David builded for an armoury,
whereon there
hang a thousand bucklers, all shields of mighty men.
Your neck is like the tower of David, built with rows of stones; on it
hang a thousand shields, all of them shields of
warriors.
And he shall judge among the nations, and shall
rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn
war any more.
Then He will judge between the nations and
arbitrate for many peoples. They will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into
pruning hooks. Nation will no longer take up the sword against nation, nor train anymore for
war.
The mighty man, and the man of
war, the judge, and the prophet, and the
prudent, and the ancient,
the mighty man and the
warrior, the judge and the prophet, the
soothsayer and the elder,
Thy men shall fall by the sword, and thy mighty in the war.
Your men will fall by the sword, and your warriors in battle.
And it came to pass in the days of
Ahaz the son of Jotham, the son of Uzziah, king of Judah, that Rezin the king of Syria, and Pekah the son of Remaliah, king of Israel, went up toward Jerusalem to
war against it, but could not prevail against it.
Now in the days that
Ahaz son of Jotham, the son of Uzziah, was king of Judah, Rezin king of
Aram marched up to
wage war against Jerusalem. He was accompanied by Pekah son of Remaliah the king of Israel, but he could not overpower the city.
For every battle of the
warrior is with confused noise, and garments rolled in blood; but this shall be with burning and fuel of fire.
For every
trampling boot of battle and every garment rolled in blood will be burned as fuel for the fire.
Therefore shall the Lord, the Lord of hosts, send among his fat ones
leanness; and under his glory he shall
kindle a burning like the burning of a fire.
Therefore the Lord GOD of Hosts will send a wasting disease among Assyria’s
stout warriors, and under his
pomp will be
kindled a fire like a burning flame.
I have commanded my
sanctified ones, I have also called my mighty ones for mine anger, even them that
rejoice in my highness.
I have commanded My
sanctified ones; I have even summoned My
warriors to
execute My wrath and
exult in My triumph.
The noise of a multitude in the mountains, like as of a great people; a
tumultuous noise of the kingdoms of nations gathered together: the LORD of hosts mustereth the host of the battle.
Listen, a
tumult on the mountains, like that of a great multitude!
Listen, an
uproar among the kingdoms, like nations gathered together! The LORD of Hosts is
mobilizing an army for
war.
And he
cried, A lion: My lord, I stand continually upon the
watchtower in the
daytime, and I am set in my
ward whole nights:
For they fled from the swords, from the drawn sword, and from the bent bow, and from the
grievousness of
war.
For they
flee from the sword— the sword that is drawn— from the bow that is bent, and from the stress of battle.
And the residue of the number of archers, the mighty men of the children of
Kedar, shall be diminished: for the LORD God of Israel hath spoken it.
The remaining archers, the
warriors of
Kedar, will be few.” For the LORD, the God of Israel, has spoken.
In measure, when it shooteth forth, thou
wilt debate with it: he stayeth his rough wind in the day of the east wind.
By
warfare and exile You
contended with her and removed her with a fierce wind, as on the day the east wind blows.
And the multitude of all the nations that fight against
Ariel, even all that fight against her and her
munition, and that distress her, shall be as a dream of a night vision.
All the many nations going out to battle against
Ariel— even all who
war against her, laying siege and attacking her— will be like a dream, like a vision in the night,
I say, sayest thou, (but they are but vain words) I have counsel and strength for
war: now on whom
dost thou trust, that thou rebellest against me?
You claim to have a
strategy and strength for
war, but these are empty words. In whom are you now trusting, that you have rebelled against me?
When the
Rabshakeh heard that the king of Assyria had left
Lachish, he withdrew and found the king fighting against
Libnah.
And he heard say concerning Tirhakah king of
Ethiopia, He is come forth to make
war with thee. And when he heard it, he sent messengers to
Hezekiah, saying,
Speak ye
comfortably to Jerusalem, and cry unto her, that her
warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity is
pardoned: for she hath received of the LORD’S hand double for all her sins.
“Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and
proclaim to her that her forced labor has been completed; her iniquity has been
pardoned. For she has received from the hand of the LORD double for all her sins.”
Thou shalt seek them, and shalt not find them, even them that
contended with thee: they that
war against thee shall be as nothing, and as a thing of
nought.
You will seek them but will not find them. Those who
wage war against you will come to nothing.
The LORD shall go forth as a mighty man, he shall
stir up jealousy like a man of
war: he shall cry,
yea,
roar; he shall prevail against his enemies.
The LORD goes forth like a mighty one; He stirs up His zeal like a
warrior. He shouts;
yes, He roars in triumph over His enemies:
Which bringeth forth the
chariot and horse, the army and the power; they shall lie down together, they shall not rise: they are extinct, they are
quenched as
tow.
Then shall it be for a man to burn: for he will take thereof, and
warm himself;
yea, he kindleth it, and baketh bread;
yea, he maketh a god, and worshippeth it; he maketh it a
graven image, and falleth down
thereto.
It serves as fuel for man. He takes some of it to
warm himself, and he kindles a fire and bakes his bread; he even fashions it into a god and worships it; he makes an
idol and bows down to it.
He burneth part thereof in the fire; with part thereof he eateth flesh; he roasteth
roast, and is satisfied:
yea, he
warmeth himself, and saith,
Aha, I am
warm, I have seen the fire:
He burns half of it in the fire, and he roasts meat on that half. He eats the
roast and is satisfied. Indeed, he
warms himself and says, “
Ah! I am
warm; I see the fire.”
Therefore shall evil come upon thee; thou shalt not know from whence it riseth: and mischief shall fall upon thee; thou shalt not be able to put if off: and
desolation shall come upon thee suddenly, which thou shalt not know.
But
disaster will come upon you; you will not know how to charm it away. A
calamity will
befall you that you will be unable to
ward off.
Devastation will happen to you suddenly and unexpectedly.
Behold, they shall be as
stubble; the fire shall burn them; they shall not deliver themselves from the power of the flame: there shall not be a coal to
warm at, nor fire to sit before it.
Surely they are like
stubble; the fire will burn them up. They cannot deliver themselves from the power of the flame. There will be no coals to
warm them or fire to sit beside.
Make ye mention to the nations; behold,
publish against Jerusalem, that watchers come from a far country, and give out their voice against the cities of Judah.
Warn the nations now!
Proclaim to Jerusalem: “A
besieging army comes from a distant land; they raise their voices against the cities of Judah.
My
bowels, my
bowels! I am pained at my very heart; my heart maketh a noise in me; I cannot hold my peace, because thou hast heard, O my soul, the sound of the
trump, the
alarm of
war.
My
anguish, my
anguish! I
writhe in pain! Oh, the pain in my chest! My heart pounds within me; I cannot be silent. For I have heard the sound of the horn, the
alarm of battle.
Prepare ye
war against her; arise, and let us go up at
noon.
Woe unto us! for the day goeth away, for the shadows of the evening are stretched out.
‘Prepare for battle against her; rise up, let us attack at
noon.
Woe to us, for the
daylight is
fading; the evening shadows grow long.
To whom shall I speak, and give
warning, that they may hear? behold, their ear is
uncircumcised, and they cannot
hearken: behold, the word of the LORD is unto them a reproach; they have no delight in it.
To whom can I give this
warning? Who will
listen to me? Look, their ears are closed, so they cannot hear. See, the word of the LORD has become offensive to them; they find no pleasure in it.
They shall lay hold on bow and
spear; they are cruel, and have no mercy; their voice roareth like the sea; and they
ride upon horses, set in
array as men for
war against thee, O daughter of
Zion.
They
grasp the bow and
spear; they are cruel and
merciless. Their voice roars like the sea, and they
ride upon horses, lined up like men in formation against you, O Daughter of
Zion.”
Gather up thy wares out of the land, O inhabitant of the fortress.
Gather up your belongings from this land, you who live under siege.
For I earnestly
protested unto your fathers in the day that I brought them up out of the land of Egypt, even unto this day, rising early and
protesting, saying, Obey my voice.
For from the time I brought your fathers out of the land of Egypt until
today, I strongly
warned them again and again, saying, ‘Obey My voice.’
Why shouldest thou be as a man
astonied, as a mighty man that cannot save? yet thou, O LORD, art in the midst of us, and we are called by thy name; leave us not.
Why are You like a man taken by surprise, like a
warrior powerless to save? Yet You are among us, O LORD, and we are called by Your name. Do not
forsake us!
If that nation, against whom I have pronounced, turn from their evil, I will
repent of the evil that I thought to do unto them.
But if that nation I
warned turns from its evil, then I will relent of the
disaster I had
planned to bring.
But the LORD is with me as a mighty terrible one: therefore my persecutors shall
stumble, and they shall not prevail: they shall be greatly
ashamed; for they shall not
prosper: their
everlasting confusion shall never be forgotten.
But the LORD is with me like a
fearsome warrior. Therefore, my persecutors will
stumble and will not prevail. Since they have not succeeded, they will be utterly put to shame, with an
everlasting disgrace that will never be forgotten.
Enquire, I pray thee, of the LORD for us; for Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon maketh
war against us; if so be that the LORD will deal with us according to all his
wondrous works, that he may go up from us.
“Please inquire of the LORD on our behalf, since
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon is
waging war against us. Perhaps the LORD will perform for us something like all His past wonders, so that
Nebuchadnezzar will withdraw from us.”
Thus saith the LORD God of Israel; Behold, I will turn back the weapons of
war that are in your hands,
wherewith ye fight against the king of Babylon, and against the Chaldeans, which
besiege you without the walls, and I will
assemble them into the midst of this city.
this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘I will turn against you the weapons of
war in your hands, with which you are fighting the king of Babylon and the Chaldeans who
besiege you outside the wall, and I will
assemble their forces in the center of this city.
He that abideth in this city shall die by the sword, and by the famine, and by the
pestilence: but he that goeth out, and falleth to the Chaldeans that
besiege you, he shall live, and his life shall be unto him for a prey.
Whoever stays in this city will die by sword and famine and plague, but
whoever goes out and surrenders to the Chaldeans who
besiege you will live; he will retain his life like a
spoil of
war.
I spake unto thee in thy prosperity; but thou saidst, I will not hear. This hath been thy manner from thy youth, that thou obeyedst not my voice.
I
warned you when you were secure. You said, ‘I will not
listen.’ This has been your way from youth, that you have not obeyed My voice.
The prophets that have been before me and before thee of old
prophesied both against many countries, and against great kingdoms, of
war, and of evil, and of
pestilence.
The prophets of old who preceded you and me
prophesied war,
disaster, and plague against many lands and great kingdoms.
And I will
punish him and his seed and his servants for their iniquity; and I will bring upon them, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and upon the men of Judah, all the evil that I have pronounced against them; but they
hearkened not.
I will
punish him and his descendants and servants for their iniquity. I will bring on them, on the residents of Jerusalem, and on the men of Judah, all the
calamity about which I
warned them but they did not
listen.”
And when he was in the gate of Benjamin, a captain of the ward was there, whose name was Irijah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah; and he took Jeremiah the prophet, saying, Thou fallest away to the Chaldeans.
But when he reached the Gate of Benjamin, the captain of the guard, whose name was Irijah son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah, seized him and said, “You are deserting to the Chaldeans!”
Thus saith the LORD, He that remaineth in this city shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the
pestilence: but he that goeth forth to the Chaldeans shall live; for he shall have his life for a prey, and shall live.
“This is what the LORD says:
Whoever stays in this city will die by sword and famine and plague, but
whoever surrenders to the Chaldeans will live; he will retain his life like a
spoil of
war, and he will live.
Therefore the princes said unto the king, We
beseech thee, let this man be put to death: for thus he weakeneth the hands of the men of
war that remain in this city, and the hands of all the people, in speaking such words unto them: for this man seeketh not the
welfare of this people, but the
hurt.
Then the officials said to the king, “This man ought to die, for he is discouraging the warriors who remain in this city, as well as all the people, by speaking such words to them; this man is not seeking the well-being of these people, but their ruin.”
Then said
Zedekiah unto Jeremiah, Let no man know of these words, and thou shalt not die.
And it came to pass, that when
Zedekiah the king of Judah saw them, and all the men of
war, then they fled, and went forth out of the city by night, by the way of the king’s garden, by the gate
betwixt the two walls: and he went out the way of the plain.
When
Zedekiah king of Judah and all the soldiers saw them, they fled. They left the city at night by way of the king’s garden, through the gate between the two walls, and they went out along the route to the Arabah.
For I will surely deliver thee, and thou shalt not fall by the sword, but thy life shall be for a prey unto thee: because thou hast put thy trust in me, saith the LORD.
For I will surely
rescue you so that you do not fall by the sword. Because you have trusted in Me, you will escape with your life like a
spoil of
war, declares the LORD.’”
Ishmael also
slew all the Jews that were with him, even with Gedaliah, at
Mizpah, and the Chaldeans that were found there, and the men of
war.
Ishmael also killed all the Jews who were with Gedaliah at
Mizpah, as well as the
Chaldean soldiers who were there.
Then took Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces that were with him, all the
remnant of the people whom he had recovered from
Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, from
Mizpah, after that he had slain Gedaliah the son of
Ahikam, even mighty men of
war, and the women, and the children, and the eunuchs, whom he had brought again from
Gibeon:
Then Johanan son of Kareah and all the commanders of the armies with him took the whole
remnant of the people from
Mizpah whom he had recovered from
Ishmael son of Nethaniah after
Ishmael had killed Gedaliah son of
Ahikam: the soldiers, women, children, and court officials he had brought back from
Gibeon.
Saying, No; but we will go into the land of Egypt, where we shall see no
war, nor hear the sound of the
trumpet, nor have hunger of bread; and there will we dwell:
and if you say, ‘No, but we will go to the land of Egypt and live there, where we will not see war or hear the sound of the ram’s horn or hunger for bread,’
The LORD hath said concerning you, O ye
remnant of Judah; Go ye not into Egypt: know certainly that I have
admonished you this day.
The LORD has told you, O
remnant of Judah, ‘Do not go to Egypt.’ Know for sure that I have
warned you
today!
And seekest thou great things for
thyself? seek them not: for, behold, I will bring evil upon all flesh, saith the LORD: but thy life will I give unto thee for a prey in all places
whither thou goest.
But as for you, do you seek great things for
yourself? Stop seeking! For I will bring
disaster on every living creature, declares the LORD, but wherever you go, I will grant your life as a
spoil of
war.”
Wherefore have I seen them dismayed and turned away back? and their mighty ones are beaten down, and are fled
apace, and look not back: for fear was round about, saith the LORD.
Why am I seeing this? They are
terrified, they are retreating; their
warriors are defeated, they
flee in
haste without looking back; terror is on every side!” declares the LORD.
Let not the swift
flee away, nor the mighty man escape; they shall
stumble, and fall toward the north by the river Euphrates.
“The swift cannot
flee, and the
warrior cannot escape! In the north by the River Euphrates they
stumble and fall.
Come up, ye horses; and
rage, ye
chariots; and let the mighty men come forth; the Ethiopians and the Libyans, that handle the shield; and the Lydians, that handle and bend the bow.
Advance, O horses! Race
furiously, O
chariots! Let the
warriors come forth—
Cush and Put carrying their shields, men of
Lydia drawing the bow.
The nations have heard of thy shame, and thy cry hath filled the land: for the mighty man hath
stumbled against the mighty, and they are fallen both together.
The nations have heard of your shame, and your outcry fills the earth, because
warrior stumbles over
warrior and both of them have fallen together.”
Why are thy
valiant men swept away? they stood not, because the LORD did drive them.
Why have your warriors been laid low? They cannot stand, for the LORD has thrust them down.
How say ye, We are mighty and strong men for the war?
How can you say, ‘We are warriors, mighty men ready for battle’?
Kerioth is taken, and the strong holds are surprised, and the mighty men’s hearts in Moab at that day shall be as the heart of a woman in her pangs.
Kirioth has been taken, and the strongholds seized. In that day the heart of Moab’s warriors will be like the heart of a woman in labor.
Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will cause an
alarm of
war to be heard in Rabbah of the
Ammonites; and it shall be a
desolate heap, and her daughters shall be burned with fire: then shall Israel be heir unto them that were his heirs, saith the LORD.
Therefore, behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will sound the battle cry against Rabbah of the
Ammonites. It will become a
heap of ruins, and its villages will be burned. Then Israel will drive out their dispossessors, says the LORD.
Therefore her young men shall fall in her streets, and all the men of war shall be cut off in that day, saith the LORD of hosts.
For her young men will fall in the streets, and all her warriors will be silenced in that day,” declares the LORD of Hosts.
For, lo, I will raise and cause to come up against Babylon an assembly of great nations from the north country: and they shall set themselves in
array against her; from thence she shall be taken: their arrows shall be as of a mighty
expert man; none shall return in vain.
For behold, I
stir up and bring against Babylon an assembly of great nations from the land of the north. They will line up against her; from the north she will be captured. Their arrows will be like skilled
warriors who do not return empty-handed.
Shout against her round about: she hath given her hand: her foundations are fallen, her walls are thrown down: for it is the
vengeance of the LORD: take
vengeance upon her; as she hath done, do unto her.
Raise a
war cry against her on every side! She has thrown up her hands in surrender; her towers have fallen; her walls are
torn down. Since this is the
vengeance of the LORD, take out your
vengeance upon her; as she has done, do the same to her.
Therefore shall her young men fall in the streets, and all her men of war shall be cut off in that day, saith the LORD.
Therefore, her young men will fall in the streets, and all her warriors will be silenced in that day,” declares the LORD.
A sword is upon the liars; and they shall
dote: a sword is upon her mighty men; and they shall be dismayed.
A sword is against her false prophets, and they will become fools. A sword is against her warriors, and they will be filled with terror.
Thou art my battle
axe and weapons of
war: for with thee will I break in pieces the nations, and with thee will I destroy kingdoms;
“You are My
war club, My weapon for battle. With you I
shatter nations; with you I bring kingdoms to ruin.
The mighty men of Babylon have forborn to fight, they have remained in their holds: their might hath failed; they became as women: they have burned her dwellingplaces; her bars are broken.
The
warriors of Babylon have stopped fighting; they sit in their strongholds. Their strength is exhausted; they have become like women. Babylon’s homes have been set
ablaze, the bars of her gates are broken.
And that the passages are stopped, and the reeds they have burned with fire, and the men of
war are
affrighted.
The fords have been seized, the marshes set on fire, and the soldiers are
terrified.”
Because the
spoiler is come upon her, even upon Babylon, and her mighty men are taken, every one of their bows is broken: for the LORD God of recompences shall surely requite.
For a destroyer is coming against her— against Babylon. Her
warriors will be captured, and their bows will be broken, for the LORD is a God of
retribution; He will repay in full.
And I will make
drunk her princes, and her wise men, her captains, and her rulers, and her mighty men: and they shall sleep a perpetual sleep, and not
wake, saith the King, whose name is the LORD of hosts.
I will make her princes and wise men
drunk, along with her governors, officials, and
warriors. Then they will fall
asleep forever and not
wake up,” declares the King, whose name is the LORD of Hosts.
Then the city was broken up, and all the men of war fled, and went forth out of the city by night by the way of the gate between the two walls, which was by the king’s garden; (now the Chaldeans were by the city round about:) and they went by the way of the plain.
Then the city was breached; and though the Chaldeans had surrounded the city, all the men of war fled the city by night by way of the gate between the two walls near the king’s garden. They headed toward the Arabah,
He took also out of the city an
eunuch, which had the charge of the men of
war; and seven men of them that were near the king’s person, which were found in the city; and the principal
scribe of the host, who
mustered the people of the land; and
threescore men of the people of the land, that were found in the midst of the city.
Of those still in the city, he took a court official who had been appointed over the men of
war, as well as seven trusted royal advisers. He also took the
scribe of the captain of the army, who had
enlisted the people of the land, and sixty men who were found in the city.
The Lord hath
trodden under foot all my mighty men in the midst of me: he hath called an assembly against me to
crush my young men: the Lord hath
trodden the virgin, the daughter of Judah, as in a winepress.
The Lord has rejected all the mighty men in my midst; He has summoned an army against me to
crush my young
warriors. Like grapes in a winepress, the Lord has
trampled the Virgin Daughter of Judah.
Thy prophets have seen vain and
foolish things for thee: and they have not discovered thine iniquity, to turn away thy captivity; but have seen for thee false burdens and causes of
banishment.
The visions of your prophets were empty and
deceptive; they did not
expose your guilt to
ward off your captivity. The burdens they envisioned for you were empty and misleading.
Son of man, I have made thee a
watchman unto the house of Israel: therefore hear the word at my mouth, and give them
warning from me.
“Son of man, I have made you a
watchman for the house of Israel. Whenever you hear a word from My mouth, give them a
warning from Me.
When I say unto the wicked, Thou shalt surely die; and thou givest him not
warning, nor speakest to
warn the wicked from his wicked way, to save his life; the same wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at thine hand.
If I say to the wicked man, ‘You will surely die,’ but you do not
warn him or speak out to
warn him from his wicked way to save his life, that wicked man will die in his iniquity, and I will hold you responsible for his blood.
Yet if thou
warn the wicked, and he turn not from his wickedness, nor from his wicked way, he shall die in his iniquity; but thou hast delivered thy soul.
But if you
warn a wicked man and he does not turn from his wickedness and his wicked way, he will die in his iniquity, but you will have saved
yourself.
Again, When a righteous man
doth turn from his righteousness, and commit iniquity, and I lay a stumblingblock before him, he shall die: because thou hast not given him
warning, he shall die in his sin, and his righteousness which he hath done shall not be remembered; but his blood will I require at thine hand.
Now if a righteous man turns from his righteousness and commits iniquity, and I put a
stumbling block before him, he will die. If you did not
warn him, he will die in his sin, and the righteous acts he did will not be remembered. And I will hold you responsible for his blood.
Nevertheless if thou
warn the righteous man, that the righteous sin not, and he
doth not sin, he shall surely live, because he is
warned; also thou hast delivered thy soul.
But if you
warn the righteous man not to sin, and he does not sin, he will indeed live because he
heeded your
warning, and you will have saved
yourself.”
So it shall be a reproach and a
taunt, an instruction and an
astonishment unto the nations that are round about thee, when I shall
execute judgments in thee in anger and in
fury and in
furious rebukes. I the LORD have spoken it.
So you will be a reproach and a
taunt, a
warning and a
horror to the nations around you, when I
execute judgments against you in anger, wrath, and
raging fury. I, the LORD, have spoken.
They have
blown the
trumpet, even to make all ready; but none goeth to the battle: for my wrath is upon all the multitude thereof.
They have
blown the
trumpet and made everything ready, but no one goes to
war, for My wrath is upon the whole multitude.
Neither shall Pharaoh with his mighty army and great company make for him in the war, by casting up mounts, and building forts, to cut off many persons:
Pharaoh with his mighty army and vast
horde will not help him in battle, when ramps are built and siege walls constructed to destroy many lives.
And they put him in ward in chains, and brought him to the king of Babylon: they brought him into holds, that his voice should no more be heard upon the mountains of Israel.
With hooks they
caged him and brought him to the king of Babylon. They brought him into captivity so that his
roar was heard no longer on the mountains of Israel.
And Aholah played the
harlot when she was mine; and she
doted on her lovers, on the Assyrians her neighbours,
Oholah
prostituted herself while she was still Mine. She
lusted after her lovers, the Assyrians—
warriors She
doted upon the Assyrians her neighbours, captains and rulers clothed most
gorgeously,
horsemen riding upon horses, all of them desirable young men.
She too
lusted after the Assyrians—governors and commanders,
warriors dressed in
splendor,
horsemen riding on steeds, all desirable young men.
And he shall set engines of war against thy walls, and with his axes he shall break down thy towers.
He will direct the blows of his
battering rams against your walls and
tear down your towers with his axes.
They of Persia and of Lud and of
Phut were in thine army, thy men of
war: they
hanged the shield and
helmet in thee; they set forth thy
comeliness.
Men of Persia,
Lydia, and Put served as
warriors in your army. They hung their shields and helmets on your walls; they gave you
splendor.
Tarshish was thy merchant by reason of the multitude of all kind of riches; with silver, iron, tin, and lead, they traded in thy fairs.
Tarshish was your merchant because of your great wealth of goods; they exchanged silver, iron, tin, and lead for your
wares.
They of the house of
Togarmah traded in thy fairs with horses and
horsemen and mules.
The men of Beth-
togarmah exchanged horses,
war horses, and mules for your
wares.
Syria was thy merchant by reason of the multitude of the
wares of thy making: they occupied in thy fairs with emeralds, purple, and
broidered work, and fine linen, and coral, and
agate.
Aram was your customer because of your many products; they exchanged
turquoise, purple,
embroidered work, fine linen, coral, and
rubies for your
wares.
Damascus was thy merchant in the multitude of the wares of thy making, for the multitude of all riches; in the wine of Helbon, and white wool.
Because of your many products and your great wealth of goods, Damascus traded with you wine from Helbon, wool from Zahar,
and casks of wine from Izal for your
wares. Wrought iron,
cassia, and sweet cane were exchanged for your
merchandise.
The merchants of
Sheba and Raamah, they were thy merchants: they occupied in thy fairs with chief of all spices, and with all precious stones, and gold.
The merchants of
Sheba and Raamah traded with you; for your
wares they exchanged gold, the finest of all spices, and precious stones.
Thy riches, and thy fairs, thy
merchandise, thy mariners, and thy pilots, thy calkers, and the occupiers of thy
merchandise, and all thy men of
war, that are in thee, and in all thy company which is in the midst of thee, shall fall into the midst of the seas in the day of thy ruin.
Your wealth,
wares, and
merchandise, your sailors, captains, and shipwrights, your merchants and all the
warriors within you, with all the other people on board, will sink into the heart of the sea on the day of your
downfall.
When thy
wares went forth out of the seas, thou filledst many people; thou
didst enrich the kings of the earth with the multitude of thy riches and of thy
merchandise.
When your
wares went out to sea, you satisfied many nations. You enriched the kings of the earth with your abundant wealth and
merchandise.
And they shall not lie with the mighty that are fallen of the
uncircumcised, which are gone down to
hell with their weapons of
war: and they have laid their swords under their heads, but their
iniquities shall be upon their bones, though they were the terror of the mighty in the land of the living.
They do not lie down with the fallen
warriors of old, who went down to
Sheol with their weapons of
war, whose swords were placed under their heads, whose shields rested on their bones, although the terror of the mighty was once in the land of the living.
If when he
seeth the sword come upon the land, he blow the
trumpet, and
warn the people;
and he sees the sword coming against that land and blows the ram’s horn to
warn the people.
Then
whosoever heareth the sound of the
trumpet, and taketh not
warning; if the sword come, and take him away, his blood shall be upon his own head.
Then if
anyone hears the sound of the horn but fails to
heed the
warning, and the sword comes and takes him away, his blood will be on his own head.
