Now go, write it before them in a table, and note it in a book, that it may be for the time to come for ever and ever:
Go now, write it on a
tablet in their presence and
inscribe it on a
scroll; it will be for the days to come, a
witness forever and ever.
And he shall break it as the breaking of the potters’ vessel that is broken in pieces; he shall not
spare: so that there shall not be found in the
bursting of it a
sherd to take fire from the
hearth, or to take water
withal out of the pit.
And though the Lord give you the bread of
adversity, and the water of
affliction, yet shall not thy teachers be removed into a corner any more, but thine eyes shall see thy teachers:
The Lord will give you the bread of
adversity and the water of
affliction, but your Teacher will no longer hide Himself—
with your own eyes you will see Him.
Then shall he give the rain of thy seed, that thou shalt
sow the ground
withal; and bread of the increase of the earth, and it shall be fat and
plenteous: in that day shall thy cattle feed in large pastures.
Then He will send rain for the seed that you have sown in the ground, and the food that comes from your land will be rich and
plentiful. On that day your cattle will
graze in open pastures.
Behold, the name of the LORD cometh from far, burning
with his anger, and the burden thereof is heavy: his lips are full of
indignation, and his tongue as a
devouring fire:
Behold, the Name of the LORD comes from
afar,
with burning anger and dense smoke. His lips are full of
fury, and His tongue is like a
consuming fire.
And his breath, as an overflowing stream, shall reach to the midst of the neck, to
sift the nations
with the
sieve of vanity: and there shall be a
bridle in the jaws of the people, causing them to
err.
His breath is like a
rushing torrent that rises to the neck. He comes to
sift the nations in a
sieve of destruction; He bridles the jaws of the peoples to lead them
astray.
Ye shall have a song, as in the night when a holy
solemnity is kept; and
gladness of heart, as when one goeth
with a pipe to come into the mountain of the LORD, to the mighty One of Israel.
You will sing as on the night of a holy festival, and your heart will
rejoice like one who walks to the music of a
flute, going up to the mountain of the LORD, to the Rock of Israel.
And the LORD shall cause his glorious voice to be heard, and shall
shew the lighting down of his arm,
with the
indignation of his anger, and
with the flame of a
devouring fire,
with scattering, and
tempest, and hailstones.
And the LORD will cause His
majestic voice to be heard and His mighty arm to be revealed, striking in
angry wrath
with a flame of
consuming fire, and
with cloudburst, storm, and hailstones.
For through the voice of the LORD shall the Assyrian be beaten down, which
smote with a rod.
For Assyria will be
shattered at the voice of the LORD; He will strike them
with His
scepter.
And in every place where the grounded staff shall pass, which the LORD shall lay upon him, it shall be
with tabrets and harps: and in battles of
shaking will he fight
with it.
And
with every stroke of the rod of punishment that the LORD brings down on them, the tambourines and lyres will sound as He battles
with weapons
brandished.
For
Tophet is ordained of old;
yea, for the king it is prepared; he hath made it deep and large: the pile thereof is fire and much wood; the breath of the LORD, like a stream of
brimstone,
doth kindle it.
For Topheth has long been prepared; it has been made ready for the king. Its funeral
pyre is deep and wide,
with plenty of fire and wood. The breath of the LORD, like a
torrent of burning sulfur, sets it
ablaze.
Then shall the Assyrian fall
with the sword, not of a mighty man; and the sword, not of a mean man, shall
devour him: but he shall
flee from the sword, and his young men shall be
discomfited.
“Then Assyria will fall, but not by the sword of man; a sword will
devour them, but not one made by mortals. They will
flee before the sword, and their young men will be put to forced labor.
Behold, a king shall reign in righteousness, and princes shall rule in judgment.
Behold, a king will reign in righteousness, and princes will rule with justice.
The instruments also of the
churl are evil: he deviseth wicked devices to destroy the poor
with lying words, even when the
needy speaketh right.
The weapons of the
scoundrel are destructive; he hatches plots to destroy the poor
with lies, even when the
plea of the
needy is just.
Upon the land of my people shall come up thorns and briers;
yea, upon all the houses of joy in the
joyous city:
and for the land of my people, overgrown
with thorns and briers— even for every house of
merriment in this city of
revelry.
Woe to you, O destroyer never destroyed, O
traitor never
betrayed! When you have finished destroying, you will be destroyed. When you have finished
betraying, you will be
betrayed.
The LORD is
exalted; for he dwelleth on high: he hath filled
Zion with judgment and righteousness.
The LORD is
exalted, for He dwells on high; He has filled
Zion with justice and righteousness.
Behold, their
valiant ones shall cry
without: the ambassadors of peace shall
weep bitterly.
Behold, their
valiant ones cry
aloud in the streets; the envoys of peace
weep bitterly.
The
highways lie waste, the
wayfaring man ceaseth: he hath broken the covenant, he hath
despised the cities, he regardeth no man.
The
highways are deserted; travel has ceased. The treaty has been broken, the
witnesses are
despised, and human life is disregarded.
The sinners in
Zion are afraid;
fearfulness hath surprised the hypocrites. Who among us shall dwell
with the
devouring fire? who among us shall dwell
with everlasting burnings?
He that walketh righteously, and speaketh uprightly; he that despiseth the gain of oppressions, that shaketh his hands from holding of bribes, that stoppeth his ears from hearing of blood, and shutteth his eyes from seeing evil;
He who walks righteously and speaks
with sincerity, who refuses gain from
extortion, whose hand never takes a
bribe, who stops his ears against
murderous plots and shuts his eyes
tightly against evil—
But there the glorious LORD will be unto us a place of broad rivers and streams; wherein shall go no
galley with oars, neither shall
gallant ship pass thereby.
But there the
Majestic One, our LORD, will be for us a place of rivers and wide canals, where no
galley with oars will row, and no
majestic vessel will pass.
For the
indignation of the LORD is upon all nations, and his
fury upon all their armies: he hath utterly destroyed them, he hath delivered them to the slaughter.
The LORD is
angry with all the nations and
furious with all their armies. He will
devote them to destruction; He will give them over to slaughter.
Their slain also shall be cast out, and their
stink shall come up out of their carcases, and the mountains shall be melted
with their blood.
Their slain will be left unburied, and the
stench of their corpses will rise; the mountains will flow
with their blood.
And all the host of heaven shall be dissolved, and the heavens shall be rolled together as a
scroll: and all their host shall fall down, as the leaf falleth off from the vine, and as a falling fig from the fig tree.
All the stars of heaven will be dissolved. The
skies will be rolled up like a
scroll, and all their stars will fall like
withered leaves from the vine, like foliage from the fig tree.
The sword of the LORD is filled
with blood, it is made fat
with fatness, and
with the blood of lambs and goats,
with the fat of the
kidneys of rams: for the LORD hath a sacrifice in
Bozrah, and a great slaughter in the land of
Idumea.
The sword of the LORD is bathed in blood. It drips
with fat—
with the blood of lambs and goats,
with the fat of the
kidneys of rams. For the LORD has a sacrifice in
Bozrah, a great slaughter in the land of
Edom.
And the unicorns shall come down
with them, and the bullocks
with the bulls; and their land shall be
soaked with blood, and their dust made fat
with fatness.
And the wild oxen will fall
with them, the young bulls
with the strong ones. Their land will be
drenched with blood, and their soil will be
soaked with fat.
And thorns shall come up in her palaces,
nettles and brambles in the fortresses thereof: and it shall be an
habitation of
dragons, and a court for owls.
Her towers will be overgrown
with thorns, her fortresses
with thistles and briers. She will become a
haunt for jackals, an abode for ostriches.
The wild beasts of the desert shall also meet
with the wild beasts of the island, and the
satyr shall cry to his fellow; the
screech owl also shall rest there, and find for herself a place of rest.
The desert creatures will meet
with hyenas, and one wild goat will call to another. There the night creature will settle and find her place of
repose.
There shall the great
owl make her nest, and lay, and
hatch, and gather under her shadow: there shall the vultures also be gathered, every one
with her
mate.
There the
owl will make her nest; she will lay and
hatch her eggs and gather her
brood under her shadow. Even there the birds of prey will gather, each
with its
mate.
Say to them that are of a fearful heart, Be strong, fear not: behold, your God will come
with vengeance, even God
with a recompence; he will come and save you.
Say to those
with anxious hearts: “Be strong, do not fear! Behold, your God will come
with vengeance.
With divine
retribution He will come to save you.”
The
parched ground will become a
pool, the
thirsty land springs of water. In the
haunt where jackals once lay, there will be grass and reeds and
papyrus.
Now therefore give pledges, I pray thee, to my master the king of Assyria, and I will give thee two thousand horses, if thou be able on thy part to set riders upon them.
Now, therefore, make a
bargain with my master, the king of Assyria. I will give you two thousand horses—if you can put riders on them!
And am I now come up without the LORD against this land to destroy it? the LORD said unto me, Go up against this land, and destroy it.
So now, was it apart from the LORD that I have come up against this land to destroy it? The LORD Himself said to me, ‘Go up against this land and destroy it.’”
But
Rabshakeh said, Hath my master sent me to thy master and to thee to speak these words? hath he not sent me to the men that sit upon the wall, that they may eat their own dung, and drink their own
piss with you?
But the
Rabshakeh replied, “Has my master sent me to speak these words only to you and your master, and not to the men sitting on the wall, who are destined
with you to eat their own dung and drink their own
urine?”
Then
Rabshakeh stood, and
cried with a loud voice in the Jews’ language, and said, Hear ye the words of the great king, the king of Assyria.
Then the
Rabshakeh stood and called out loudly in Hebrew: “Hear the words of the great king, the king of Assyria!
Hearken not to
Hezekiah: for thus saith the king of Assyria, Make an agreement
with me by a present, and come out to me: and eat ye every one of his vine, and every one of his fig tree, and drink ye every one the waters of his own
cistern;
Do not
listen to
Hezekiah, for this is what the king of Assyria says: Make peace
with me and come out to me. Then every one of you will eat from his own vine and his own fig tree, and drink water from his own
cistern,
Then came Eliakim, the son of Hilkiah, that was over the household, and Shebna the
scribe, and Joah, the son of
Asaph, the recorder, to
Hezekiah with their clothes rent, and told him the words of
Rabshakeh.
And it came to pass, when king
Hezekiah heard it, that he rent his clothes, and covered himself
with sackcloth, and went into the house of the LORD.
On hearing this report, King
Hezekiah tore his clothes, put on
sackcloth, and entered the house of the LORD.
And he sent Eliakim, who was over the household, and Shebna the
scribe, and the elders of the priests covered
with sackcloth, unto Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz.
And he sent Eliakim the palace
administrator, Shebna the
scribe, and the leading priests, all wearing
sackcloth, to the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz
And Isaiah said unto them, Thus shall ye say unto your master, Thus saith the LORD, Be not afraid of the words that thou hast heard,
wherewith the servants of the king of Assyria have
blasphemed me.
who replied, “Tell your master that this is what the LORD says: ‘Do not be afraid of the words you have heard,
with which the servants of the king of Assyria have
blasphemed Me.
When the
Rabshakeh heard that the king of Assyria had left
Lachish, he
withdrew and found the king fighting against
Libnah.
And he heard say concerning Tirhakah king of
Ethiopia, He is come forth to make war
with thee. And when he heard it, he sent messengers to
Hezekiah, saying,
By thy servants hast thou reproached the Lord, and hast said, By the multitude of my
chariots am I come up to the height of the mountains, to the sides of
Lebanon; and I will cut down the tall cedars thereof, and the choice
fir trees thereof: and I will enter into the height of his border, and the forest of his
Carmel.
Through your servants you have
taunted the Lord, and you have said: “
With my many
chariots I have ascended to the heights of the mountains, to the remote peaks of
Lebanon. I have cut down its tallest cedars, the finest of its
cypresses. I have reached its
farthest heights, the densest of its forests.
I have
digged, and
drunk water; and
with the sole of my feet have I dried up all the rivers of the besieged places.
I have
dug wells and
drunk foreign waters.
With the soles of my feet I have dried up all the streams of Egypt.”
Therefore thus saith the LORD concerning the king of Assyria, He shall not come into this city, nor shoot an
arrow there nor come before it
with shields, nor cast a bank against it.
So this is what the LORD says about the king of Assyria: ‘He will not enter this city or shoot an
arrow into it. He will not come before it
with a shield or build up a siege
ramp against it.
So
Sennacherib king of Assyria broke camp and
withdrew. He returned to
Nineveh and stayed there.
One day, while he was worshiping in the temple of his god
Nisroch, his sons
Adrammelech and Sharezer put him to the sword and escaped to the land of
Ararat. And his son Esar-haddon reigned in his place.
And said, Remember now, O LORD, I
beseech thee, how I have walked before thee in truth and
with a perfect heart, and have done that which is good in thy sight. And
Hezekiah wept sore.
saying, “Please, O LORD, remember how I have walked before You faithfully and
with wholehearted devotion; I have done what was good in Your sight.” And
Hezekiah wept bitterly.
I said, I shall not see the LORD, even the LORD, in the land of the living: I shall behold man no more with the inhabitants of the world.
I said, “I will never again see the LORD, even the LORD, in the land of the living; I will no longer look on mankind with those who dwell in this world.
Mine age is departed, and is removed from me as a
shepherd’s tent: I have cut off like a
weaver my life: he will cut me off
with pining sickness: from day even to night
wilt thou make an end of me.
My dwelling has been
picked up and removed from me like a
shepherd’s tent. I have rolled up my life like a
weaver; He cuts me off from the
loom; from day until night You make an end of me.
The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: because the spirit of the LORD bloweth upon it: surely the people is grass.
The grass
withers and the flowers fall when the breath of the LORD blows on them; indeed, the people are grass.
The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.
The grass
withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God stands
forever.”
O
Zion, that bringest good
tidings, get thee up into the high mountain; O Jerusalem, that bringest good
tidings, lift up thy voice
with strength; lift it up, be not afraid; say unto the cities of Judah, Behold your God!
Go up on a high mountain, O
Zion,
herald of good news. Raise your voice loudly, O Jerusalem,
herald of good news. Lift it up, do not be afraid! Say to the cities of Judah, “Here is your God!”
Behold, the Lord GOD will come with strong hand, and his arm shall rule for him: behold, his reward is with him, and his work before him.
Behold, the Lord GOD comes
with might, and His arm establishes His rule. His reward is
with Him, and His
recompense accompanies Him.
He shall feed his flock like a
shepherd: he shall gather the lambs
with his arm, and carry them in his
bosom, and shall gently lead those that are
with young.
He tends His flock like a
shepherd; He gathers the lambs in His arms and carries them close to His heart. He gently leads the
nursing ewes.
Who hath measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, and meted out heaven
with the span, and
comprehended the dust of the earth in a measure, and
weighed the mountains in scales, and the hills in a balance?
Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, or marked off the heavens
with the span of his hand? Who has held the dust of the earth in a
basket, or
weighed the mountains on a scale and the hills
with a balance?
With whom took he counsel, and who
instructed him, and taught him in the path of judgment, and taught him knowledge, and shewed to him the way of understanding?
Whom did He
consult to
enlighten Him, and who taught Him the paths of justice? Who imparted knowledge to Him and showed Him the way of understanding?
To an
idol that a
craftsman casts and a metalworker overlays
with gold and fits
with silver chains?
Yea, they shall not be planted;
yea, they shall not be sown:
yea, their stock shall not take root in the earth: and he shall also blow upon them, and they shall
wither, and the
whirlwind shall take them away as
stubble.
No sooner are they planted, no sooner are they sown, no sooner have their stems taken root in the ground, than He blows on them and they
wither, and a
whirlwind sweeps them away like
stubble.
But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up
with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be
weary; and they shall walk, and not
faint.
But those who wait upon the LORD will renew their strength; they will mount up
with wings like eagles; they will run and not grow
weary, they will walk and not
faint.
Who raised up the righteous man from the east, called him to his foot, gave the nations before him, and made him rule over kings? he gave them as the dust to his sword, and as driven
stubble to his bow.
Who has
aroused one from the east and called him to his feet in righteousness? He hands nations over to him and subdues kings before him. He turns them to dust
with his sword, to windblown
chaff with his bow.
He pursued them, and passed safely; even by the way that he had not gone with his feet.
He pursues them, going on safely, hardly touching the path with his feet.
Who hath wrought and done it, calling the generations from the beginning? I the LORD, the first, and with the last; I am he.
Who has performed this and carried it out, calling forth the generations from the beginning? I, the LORD—the first and the last— I am He.”
So the
carpenter encouraged the
goldsmith, and he that smootheth
with the hammer him that
smote the
anvil, saying, It is ready for the sodering: and he fastened it
with nails, that it should not be moved.
Fear thou not; for I am
with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will
strengthen thee;
yea, I will help thee;
yea, I will
uphold thee
with the right hand of my righteousness.
Do not fear, for I am
with you; do not be afraid, for I am your God. I will
strengthen you; I will surely help you; I will
uphold you
with My right hand of righteousness.
Behold, all they that were incensed against thee shall be
ashamed and confounded: they shall be as nothing; and they that
strive with thee shall perish.
Behold, all who
rage against you will be
ashamed and disgraced; those who
contend with you will be reduced to nothing and will perish.
Thou shalt seek them, and shalt not find them, even them that
contended with thee: they that war against thee shall be as nothing, and as a thing of
nought.
You will seek them but will not find them. Those who
wage war against you will come to nothing.
Behold, I will make thee a new sharp
threshing instrument having teeth: thou shalt
thresh the mountains, and beat them small, and shalt make the hills as
chaff.
Behold, I will make you into a
threshing sledge, new and sharp,
with many teeth. You will
thresh the mountains and
crush them, and reduce the hills to
chaff.
When the poor and
needy seek water, and there is none, and their tongue faileth for
thirst, I the LORD will hear them, I the God of Israel will not
forsake them.
The poor and
needy seek water, but there is none; their tongues are
parched with thirst. I, the LORD, will answer them; I, the God of Israel, will not
forsake them.
But this is a people
robbed and
spoiled; they are all of them
snared in holes, and they are
hid in prison houses: they are for a prey, and none delivereth; for a
spoil, and none saith, Restore.
When thou passest through the waters, I will be
with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame
kindle upon thee.
When you pass through the waters, I will be
with you; and when you go through the rivers, they will not
overwhelm you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be
scorched; the flames will not set you
ablaze.
Fear not: for I am with thee: I will bring thy seed from the east, and gather thee from the west;
Do not be afraid, for I am with you; I will bring your offspring from the east and gather you from the west.
Let all the nations be gathered together, and let the people be assembled: who among them can declare this, and
shew us former things? let them bring forth their
witnesses, that they may be justified: or let them hear, and say, It is truth.
All the nations gather together and the peoples
assemble. Who among them can declare this, and
proclaim to us the former things? Let them present their
witnesses to
vindicate them, so that others may hear and say, “It is true.”
Ye are my witnesses, saith the LORD, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me.
“You are My witnesses,” declares the LORD, “and My servant whom I have chosen, so that you may consider and believe Me and understand that I am He. Before Me no god was formed, and after Me none will come.
I have declared, and have saved, and I have shewed, when there was no strange god among you: therefore ye are my witnesses, saith the LORD, that I am God.
I alone decreed and saved and proclaimed— I, and not some foreign god among you. So you are My witnesses,” declares the LORD, “that I am God.
Thou hast not brought me the small cattle of thy burnt offerings; neither hast thou honoured me
with thy sacrifices. I have not caused thee to serve
with an offering, nor
wearied thee
with incense.
You have not brought Me sheep for burnt offerings, nor honored Me
with your sacrifices. I have not burdened you
with offerings, nor
wearied you
with frankincense.
Thou hast bought me no sweet cane
with money, neither hast thou filled me
with the fat of thy sacrifices: but thou hast made me to serve
with thy sins, thou hast
wearied me
with thine
iniquities.
You have not bought Me sweet cane
with your silver, nor satisfied Me
with the fat of your sacrifices. But you have burdened Me
with your sins; you have
wearied Me
with your
iniquities.
One shall say, I am the LORD’S; and another shall call himself by the name of Jacob; and another shall
subscribe with his hand unto the LORD, and
surname himself by the name of Israel.
One will say, ‘I belong to the LORD,’ another will call himself by the name of Jacob, and still another will write on his hand, ‘The LORD’s,’ and will take the name of Israel.”
Fear ye not, neither be afraid: have not I told thee from that time, and have declared it? ye are even my
witnesses. Is there a God beside me?
yea, there is no God; I know not any.
Do not
tremble or fear. Have I not told you and declared it long ago? You are My
witnesses! Is there any God but Me? There is no other Rock; I know not one.”
They that make a
graven image are all of them vanity; and their
delectable things shall not profit; and they are their own
witnesses; they see not, nor know; that they may be
ashamed.
All makers of idols are nothing, and the things they
treasure are worthless. Their
witnesses fail to see or
comprehend, so they are put to shame.
The smith
with the
tongs both worketh in the coals, and fashioneth it
with hammers, and worketh it
with the strength of his arms:
yea, he is
hungry, and his strength faileth: he drinketh no water, and is
faint.
The
blacksmith takes a tool and labors over the coals; he fashions an
idol with hammers and forges it
with his strong arms. Yet he grows
hungry and loses his strength; he fails to drink water and grows
faint.
The
carpenter stretcheth out his rule; he marketh it out
with a line; he fitteth it
with planes, and he marketh it out
with the compass, and maketh it after the figure of a man, according to the beauty of a man; that it may remain in the house.
The woodworker extends a measuring line; he marks it out
with a
stylus; he shapes it
with chisels and outlines it
with a compass. He fashions it in the likeness of man, like man in all his glory, that it may dwell in a
shrine.
He burneth part thereof in the fire;
with part thereof he eateth flesh; he roasteth
roast, and is satisfied:
yea, he warmeth himself, and saith,
Aha, I am warm, I have seen the fire:
He burns half of it in the fire, and he roasts meat on that half. He eats the
roast and is satisfied. Indeed, he warms himself and says, “
Ah! I am warm; I see the fire.”
And none considereth in his heart, neither is there knowledge nor understanding to say, I have burned part of it in the fire;
yea, also I have
baked bread upon the coals thereof; I have
roasted flesh, and eaten it: and shall I make the residue thereof an
abomination? shall I fall down to the stock of a tree?
And no one considers in his heart, no one has the knowledge or insight to say, “I burned half of it in the fire, and I
baked bread on its coals; I
roasted meat and I
ate. Shall I make something
detestable with the rest of it? Shall I bow down to a block of wood?”
Drop down, ye heavens, from above, and let the
skies pour down righteousness: let the earth open, and let them bring forth salvation, and let righteousness spring up together; I the LORD have created it.
Drip down, O heavens, from above, and let the
skies pour down righteousness. Let the earth open up that salvation may
sprout and righteousness spring up
with it; I, the LORD, have created it.
Woe unto him that striveth
with his Maker! Let the
potsherd strive with the potsherds of the earth. Shall the clay say to him that fashioneth it, What makest thou? or thy work, He hath no hands?
Woe to him who quarrels
with his Maker— one clay pot among many. Does the clay ask the
potter, ‘What are you making?’ Does your work say, ‘He has no hands’?
Thus saith the LORD, The labour of Egypt, and
merchandise of
Ethiopia and of the
Sabeans, men of
stature, shall come over unto thee, and they shall be thine: they shall come after thee; in chains they shall come over, and they shall fall down unto thee, they shall make
supplication unto thee, saying, Surely God is in thee; and there is none else, there is no God.
This is what the LORD says: “The products of Egypt and the
merchandise of
Cush, along
with the
Sabeans, men of
stature, will come over to you and will be yours; they will
trudge behind you; they will come over in chains and bow down to you. They will
confess to you: ‘God is indeed
with you, and there is no other; there is no other God.’”
But Israel shall be saved in the LORD
with an
everlasting salvation: ye shall not be
ashamed nor confounded world
without end.
I bring near my righteousness; it shall not be far off, and my salvation shall not
tarry: and I will place salvation in
Zion for Israel my glory.
I am bringing My righteousness near; it is not far away, and My salvation will not be delayed. I will grant salvation to
Zion and
adorn Israel
with My
splendor.
Come down, and sit in the dust, O virgin daughter of Babylon, sit on the ground: there is no throne, O daughter of the Chaldeans: for thou shalt no more be called tender and delicate.
“Go down and sit in the dust, O Virgin Daughter of Babylon. Sit on the ground
without a throne, O Daughter of
Chaldea! For you will no longer be called tender or delicate.
I was
wroth with my people, I have
polluted mine inheritance, and given them into thine hand: thou
didst shew them no mercy; upon the ancient hast thou very
heavily laid thy yoke.
I was
angry with My people; I
profaned My
heritage, and I placed them under your control. You showed them no mercy; even on the elderly you laid a most heavy yoke.
Stand now
with thine enchantments, and
with the multitude of thy
sorceries, wherein thou hast laboured from thy youth; if so be thou shalt be able to profit, if so be thou mayest prevail.
So take your stand
with your spells and
with your many
sorceries,
with which you have
wearied yourself from your youth. Perhaps you will succeed; perhaps you will
inspire terror!
Thus shall they be unto thee
with whom thou hast laboured, even thy merchants, from thy youth: they shall
wander every one to his quarter; none shall save thee.
This is what they are to you— those with whom you have labored and traded from youth— each one strays in his own direction; not one of them can save you.
Behold, I have refined thee, but not
with silver; I have chosen thee in the furnace of
affliction.
See, I have refined you, but not as silver; I have tested you in the furnace of
affliction.
