The heaven for height, and the earth for depth, and the heart of kings is unsearchable.
As the heavens are high and the earth is deep, so the hearts of kings cannot be searched.
As an
earring of gold, and an ornament of fine gold, so is a wise reprover upon an
obedient ear.
He that passeth by, and meddleth with
strife belonging not to him, is like one that taketh a dog by the
ears.
Like one who grabs a dog by the ears is a passerby who meddles in a quarrel not his own.
Burning lips and a wicked heart are like a
potsherd covered with silver
dross.
Like
glaze covering an
earthen vessel are burning lips and a wicked heart.
He that blesseth his friend with a loud voice, rising
early in the morning, it shall be counted a
curse to him.
If one blesses his
neighbor with a loud voice
early in the morning, it will be counted to him as a
curse.
He that turneth away his
ear from hearing the law, even his prayer shall be
abomination.
Who hath ascended up into heaven, or descended? who hath gathered the wind in his fists? who hath bound the waters in a garment? who hath established all the ends of the earth? what is his name, and what is his son’s name, if thou canst tell?
Who has ascended to heaven and come down? Who has gathered the wind in His hands? Who has bound up the waters in His
cloak? Who has established all the ends of the
earth? What is His name, and what is the name of His Son— surely you know!
There is a generation, whose teeth are as swords, and their jaw teeth as
knives, to
devour the poor from off the
earth, and the
needy from among men.
The grave; and the barren
womb; the
earth that is not filled with water; and the fire that saith not, It is enough.
Sheol, the barren
womb, land never satisfied with water, and fire that never says, ‘Enough!’
For three things the earth is disquieted, and for four which it cannot bear:
Under three things the earth trembles, under four it cannot bear up:
There be four things which are little upon the earth, but they are exceeding wise:
Four things on earth are small, yet they are exceedingly wise:
She considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of her hands she planteth a
vineyard.
One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth for ever.
Generations come and generations go, but the
earth remains
forever.
All things are full of labour; man cannot utter it: the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.
All things are
wearisome, more than one can describe; the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the
ear content with hearing.
Who knoweth the spirit of man that goeth upward, and the spirit of the beast that goeth
downward to the
earth?
Who knows if the spirit of man rises upward and the spirit of the animal descends into the earth?
Be not
rash with thy mouth, and let not thine heart be
hasty to utter any thing before God: for God is in heaven, and thou upon
earth: therefore let thy words be few.
Do not be quick to speak, and do not be
hasty in your heart to utter a word before God. After all, God is in heaven and you are on
earth. So let your words be few.
Moreover the profit of the earth is for all: the king himself is served by the field.
The produce of the earth is taken by all; the king himself profits from the fields.
For there is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not.
Surely there is no righteous man on earth who does good and never sins.
There is a vanity which is done upon the earth; that there be just men, unto whom it happeneth according to the work of the wicked; again, there be wicked men, to whom it happeneth according to the work of the righteous: I said that this also is vanity.
There is a
futility that is done on the
earth: There are righteous men who get what the actions of the wicked deserve, and there are wicked men who get what the actions of the righteous deserve. I say that this too is
futile.
When I applied mine heart to know wisdom, and to see the business that is done upon the
earth: (for also there is that neither day nor night
seeth sleep with his eyes:)
When I applied my mind to know wisdom and to observe the task that one performs on the earth—though his eyes do not see sleep in the day or even in the night—
I have seen servants upon horses, and princes walking as servants upon the earth.
I have seen slaves on
horseback, while princes go on foot like slaves.
Give a portion to seven, and also to eight; for thou knowest not what evil shall be upon the earth.
Divide your portion among seven, or even eight, for you do not know what
disaster may
befall the land.
If the clouds be full of rain, they empty themselves upon the earth: and if the tree fall toward the south, or toward the north, in the place where the tree falleth, there it shall be.
If the clouds are full, they will pour out rain upon the earth; whether a tree falls to the south or to the north, in the place where it falls, there it will lie.
Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.
before the dust returns to the ground from which it came and the spirit returns to God who gave it.
The flowers appear on the
earth; the time of the singing of birds is come, and the voice of the
turtle is heard in our land;
The flowers have appeared in the
countryside; the season of singing has come, and the
cooing of turtledoves is heard in our land.
Let us get up
early to the vineyards; let us see if the vine
flourish, whether the tender
grape appear, and the pomegranates
bud forth: there will I give thee my loves.
Let us go
early to the vineyards to see if the vine has
budded, if the
blossom has opened, if the pomegranates are in
bloom— there I will give you my love.
Hear, O heavens, and give
ear, O
earth: for the LORD hath spoken, I have
nourished and brought up children, and they have rebelled against me.
Listen, O heavens, and give
ear, O
earth, for the LORD has spoken: “I have raised children and brought them up, but they have rebelled against Me.
Hear the word of the LORD, ye rulers of
Sodom; give
ear unto the law of our God, ye people of
Gomorrah.
Hear the word of the LORD, you rulers of
Sodom;
listen to the instruction of our God, you people of
Gomorrah!
And they shall go into the holes of the rocks, and into the caves of the
earth, for fear of the LORD, and for the glory of his majesty, when he ariseth to
shake terribly the
earth.
Men will
flee to caves in the rocks and holes in the ground, away from the terror of the LORD and from the
splendor of His majesty, when He rises to
shake the
earth.
To go into the clefts of the rocks, and into the tops of the
ragged rocks, for fear of the LORD, and for the glory of his majesty, when he ariseth to
shake terribly the
earth.
They will
flee to caverns in the rocks and crevices in the cliffs, away from the terror of the LORD and from the
splendor of His majesty, when He rises to
shake the
earth.
The bonnets, and the ornaments of the legs, and the headbands, and the tablets, and the earrings,
their headdresses,
ankle chains, and sashes; their
perfume bottles and charms;
In that day shall the branch of the LORD be beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the earth shall be excellent and comely for them that are escaped of Israel.
On that day the Branch of the LORD will be beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the land will be the pride and glory of Israel’s survivors.
Woe unto them that join house to house, that lay field to field, till there be no place, that they may be placed alone in the midst of the
earth!
Woe to you who add house to house and join field to field until no place is left and you live alone in the land.
In mine
ears said the LORD of hosts, Of a truth many houses shall be
desolate, even great and fair, without inhabitant.
I heard the LORD of Hosts declare: “Surely many houses will become
desolate, great mansions left unoccupied.
Woe unto them that rise up
early in the morning, that they may follow strong drink; that continue until night, till wine inflame them!
Woe to those who rise
early in the morning in pursuit of strong drink, who
linger into the evening, to be inflamed by wine.
And he will lift up an
ensign to the nations from far, and will hiss unto them from the end of the
earth: and, behold, they shall come with speed swiftly:
He lifts a
banner for the distant nations and whistles for those at the ends of the
earth. Behold—how speedily and swiftly they come!
And one
cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole
earth is full of his glory.
And they were calling out to one another: “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of Hosts; all the earth is full of His glory.”
Make the heart of this people fat, and make their
ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their
ears, and understand with their heart, and convert, and be
healed.
Make the hearts of this people calloused;
deafen their
ears and close their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their
ears, understand with their hearts, and turn and be
healed.”
Associate
yourselves, O ye people, and ye shall be broken in pieces; and give
ear, all ye of far countries:
gird yourselves, and ye shall be broken in pieces;
gird yourselves, and ye shall be broken in pieces.
And they shall look unto the
earth; and behold trouble and darkness,
dimness of
anguish; and they shall be driven to darkness.
Then they will look to the
earth and see only distress and darkness and the
gloom of
anguish. And they will be driven into utter darkness.
And my hand hath found as a nest the riches of the people: and as one gathereth eggs that are left, have I gathered all the
earth; and there was none that moved the wing, or opened the mouth, or
peeped.
My hand reached as into a nest to seize the wealth of the nations. Like one gathering abandoned eggs, I gathered all the
earth. No wing
fluttered, no
beak opened or
chirped.’”
And shall make him of quick understanding in the fear of the LORD: and he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of his ears:
And He will delight in the fear of the LORD. He will not judge by what His eyes see, and He will not decide by what His ears hear,
But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with
equity for the
meek of the
earth: and he shall
smite the
earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he
slay the wicked.
but with righteousness He will judge the poor, and with
equity He will decide for the lowly of the
earth. He will strike the
earth with the rod of His mouth and
slay the wicked with the breath of His lips.
They shall not
hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain: for the
earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea.
They will neither
harm nor destroy on all My holy mountain, for the
earth will be full of the knowledge of the LORD as the sea is full of water.
And he shall set up an
ensign for the nations, and shall
assemble the outcasts of Israel, and gather together the
dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the
earth.
He will raise a
banner for the nations and gather the exiles of Israel; He will collect the scattered of Judah from the four corners of the
earth.
Sing unto the LORD; for he hath done excellent things: this is known in all the earth.
Sing to the LORD, for He has done glorious things. Let this be known in all the earth.
Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, cruel both with wrath and fierce anger, to lay the land
desolate: and he shall destroy the sinners thereof out of it.
Behold, the Day of the LORD is coming— cruel, with
fury and burning anger— to make the
earth a
desolation and to destroy the sinners within it.
Therefore I will
shake the heavens, and the
earth shall remove out of her place, in the wrath of the LORD of hosts, and in the day of his fierce anger.
Therefore I will make the heavens
tremble, and the
earth will be
shaken from its place at the wrath of the LORD of Hosts on the day of His burning anger.
The whole earth is at rest, and is quiet: they break forth into singing.
All the earth is at peace and at rest; they break out in song.
Hell from beneath is moved for thee to meet thee at thy coming: it stirreth up the dead for thee, even all the chief ones of the
earth; it hath raised up from their thrones all the kings of the nations.
Sheol beneath is eager to meet you upon your arrival. It stirs the spirits of the dead to
greet you— all the rulers of the
earth. It makes all the kings of the nations rise from their thrones.
They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, and consider thee, saying, Is this the man that made the
earth to
tremble, that did
shake kingdoms;
Those who see you will
stare; they will
ponder your fate: “Is this the man who
shook the
earth and made the kingdoms
tremble,
Prepare slaughter for his children for the iniquity of their fathers; that they do not rise, nor possess the land, nor fill the face of the world with cities.
Prepare a place to slaughter his sons for the
iniquities of their forefathers. They will never rise up to possess a land or cover the
earth with their cities.
This is the purpose that is purposed upon the whole earth: and this is the hand that is stretched out upon all the nations.
This is the plan devised for the whole earth, and this is the hand stretched out over all the nations.
This is the word that the LORD hath spoken concerning Moab since that time.
This is the message that the LORD spoke earlier concerning Moab.
And it shall be as when the
harvestman gathereth the corn, and reapeth the
ears with his arm; and it shall be as he that gathereth
ears in the valley of
Rephaim.
as the
reaper gathers the standing grain and harvests the
ears with his arm, as one gleans heads of grain in the Valley of
Rephaim.
All ye inhabitants of the world, and dwellers on the
earth, see ye, when he lifteth up an
ensign on the mountains; and when he bloweth a
trumpet, hear ye.
All you people of the world and dwellers of the
earth, when a
banner is raised on the mountains, you will see it; when a ram’s horn sounds, you will hear it.
They shall be left together unto the fowls of the mountains, and to the beasts of the earth: and the fowls shall summer upon them, and all the beasts of the earth shall winter upon them.
They will all be left to the mountain birds of prey, and to the beasts of the land. The birds will feed on them in summer, and all the wild animals in winter.
In that day shall Israel be the third with Egypt and with Assyria, even a blessing in the midst of the land:
In that day Israel will join a three-party alliance with Egypt and Assyria—a blessing upon the earth.
And it was revealed in mine
ears by the LORD of hosts, Surely this iniquity shall not be
purged from you till ye die, saith the Lord GOD of hosts.
The LORD of Hosts has revealed in my hearing: “Until your dying day, this sin of yours will never be
atoned for,” says the Lord GOD of Hosts.
Who hath taken this counsel against Tyre, the crowning city, whose merchants are princes, whose traffickers are the honourable of the earth?
Who
planned this against Tyre, the
bestower of crowns, whose traders are princes, whose merchants are
renowned on the
earth?
The LORD of hosts hath purposed it, to
stain the pride of all glory, and to bring into contempt all the honourable of the
earth.
The LORD of Hosts
planned it, to
defile all its glorious beauty, to disgrace all the
renowned of the
earth.
And it shall come to pass after the end of seventy years, that the LORD will visit Tyre, and she shall turn to her
hire, and shall commit
fornication with all the kingdoms of the world upon the face of the
earth.
And at the end of seventy years, the LORD will restore Tyre. Then she will return to
hire as a
prostitute and sell herself to all the kingdoms on the face of the
earth.
Behold, the LORD maketh the
earth empty, and maketh it waste, and turneth it
upside down, and scattereth abroad the inhabitants thereof.
Behold, the LORD lays waste the
earth and leaves it in ruins. He will twist its surface and
scatter its inhabitants—
The land shall be utterly
emptied, and utterly
spoiled: for the LORD hath spoken this word.
The
earth will be utterly laid waste and thoroughly
plundered. For the LORD has spoken this word.
The
earth mourneth and fadeth away, the world languisheth and fadeth away, the
haughty people of the
earth do
languish.
The
earth mourns and
withers; the world languishes and fades; the
exalted of the
earth waste away.
Therefore hath the
curse devoured the
earth, and they that dwell therein are
desolate: therefore the inhabitants of the
earth are burned, and few men left.
Therefore a
curse has consumed the
earth, and its inhabitants must bear the guilt; the
earth’s dwellers have been burned, and only a few
survive.
When thus it shall be in the midst of the land among the people, there shall be as the
shaking of an olive tree, and as the
gleaning grapes when the
vintage is done.
So will it be on the
earth and among the nations, like a harvested olive tree, like a
gleaning after a
grape harvest.
Fear, and the pit, and the
snare, are upon thee, O inhabitant of the
earth.
Terror and pit and
snare await you, O dweller of the
earth.
And it shall come to pass, that he who fleeth from the noise of the fear shall fall into the pit; and he that cometh up out of the midst of the pit shall be taken in the
snare: for the windows from on high are open, and the foundations of the
earth do
shake.
Whoever flees the sound of
panic will fall into the pit, and
whoever climbs from the pit will be caught in the
snare. For the windows of heaven are open, and the foundations of the
earth are
shaken.
The earth is utterly broken down, the earth is clean dissolved, the earth is moved exceedingly.
The
earth is utterly broken apart, the
earth is split open, the
earth is
shaken violently.
The
earth shall
reel to and
fro like a
drunkard, and shall be removed like a
cottage; and the
transgression thereof shall be heavy upon it; and it shall fall, and not rise again.
The
earth staggers like a
drunkard and sways like a
shack.
Earth’s rebellion weighs it down, and it falls, never to rise again.
And it shall come to pass in that day, that the LORD shall
punish the host of the high ones that are on high, and the kings of the
earth upon the
earth.
In that day the LORD will
punish the host of heaven above and the kings of the
earth below.
He will
swallow up death in victory; and the Lord GOD will
wipe away tears from off all faces; and the
rebuke of his people shall he take away from off all the
earth: for the LORD hath spoken it.
He will
swallow up death
forever. The Lord GOD will
wipe away the tears from every face and remove the disgrace of His people from the whole
earth. For the LORD has spoken.
With my soul have I desired thee in the night;
yea, with my spirit within me will I seek thee
early: for when thy judgments are in the
earth, the inhabitants of the world will learn righteousness.
My soul longs for You in the night; indeed, my spirit seeks You at
dawn. For when Your judgments come upon the
earth, the people of the world learn righteousness.
Thou hast increased the nation, O LORD, thou hast increased the nation: thou art
glorified: thou hadst removed it far unto all the ends of the
earth.
You have enlarged the nation, O LORD; You have enlarged the nation. You have gained glory for
Yourself; You have extended all the borders of the land.
We have been with child, we have been in pain, we have as it were brought forth wind; we have not wrought any
deliverance in the
earth; neither have the inhabitants of the world fallen.
We were with child; we
writhed in pain; but we gave birth to wind. We have given no salvation to the
earth, nor brought any life into the world.
Thy dead men shall live, together with my dead body shall they arise.
Awake and sing, ye that dwell in dust: for thy
dew is as the
dew of herbs, and the
earth shall cast out the dead.
Your dead will live; their bodies will rise.
Awake and sing, you who dwell in the dust! For your
dew is like the
dew of the morning, and the
earth will bring forth her dead.
For, behold, the LORD cometh out of his place to
punish the inhabitants of the
earth for their iniquity: the
earth also shall disclose her blood, and shall no more cover her slain.
For behold, the LORD is coming out of His dwelling to
punish the inhabitants of the
earth for their iniquity. The
earth will
reveal her
bloodshed and will no longer
conceal her slain.
Behold, the Lord hath a mighty and strong one, which as a
tempest of
hail and a destroying storm, as a flood of mighty waters overflowing, shall cast down to the
earth with the hand.
Behold, the Lord has one who is strong and mighty. Like a
hailstorm or destructive
tempest, like a driving rain or flooding
downpour, he will
smash that crown to the ground.
Now therefore be ye not mockers, lest your bands be made strong: for I have heard from the Lord GOD of hosts a consumption, even determined upon the whole earth.
So now, do not
mock, or your
shackles will become heavier. Indeed, I have heard from the Lord GOD of Hosts a decree of destruction against the whole land.
Give ye
ear, and hear my voice;
hearken, and hear my speech.
Listen and hear my voice. Pay attention and hear what I say.
And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left.
And whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear this command behind you: “This is the way. Walk in it.”
Then shall he give the rain of thy seed, that thou shalt
sow the ground
withal; and bread of the increase of the
earth, and it shall be fat and
plenteous: in that day shall thy cattle feed in large pastures.
Then He will send rain for the seed that you have sown in the ground, and the food that comes from your land will be rich and
plentiful. On that day your cattle will
graze in open pastures.
And the eyes of them that see shall not be
dim, and the
ears of them that hear shall
hearken.
Then the eyes of those who see will no longer be closed, and the
ears of those who hear will
listen.
Rise up, ye women that are at ease; hear my voice, ye careless daughters; give ear unto my speech.
He that walketh righteously, and speaketh uprightly; he that despiseth the gain of oppressions, that shaketh his hands from holding of bribes, that stoppeth his ears from hearing of blood, and shutteth his eyes from seeing evil;
He who walks righteously and speaks with
sincerity, who refuses gain from
extortion, whose hand never takes a
bribe, who stops his
ears against
murderous plots and shuts his eyes
tightly against evil—
Come near, ye nations, to hear; and
hearken, ye people: let the
earth hear, and all that is therein; the world, and all things that come forth of it.
Come near, O nations, to
listen; pay attention, O peoples. Let the
earth hear, and all that fills it, the world and all that springs from it.
Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the
ears of the
deaf shall be unstopped.
Then the eyes of the blind will be opened and the
ears of the
deaf unstopped.
Then said Eliakim and Shebna and Joah unto
Rabshakeh, Speak, I pray thee, unto thy servants in the
Syrian language; for we understand it: and speak not to us in the Jews’ language, in the
ears of the people that are on the wall.
Then Eliakim, Shebna, and Joah said to the
Rabshakeh, “Please speak to your servants in
Aramaic, since we understand it. Do not speak to us in Hebrew in the hearing of the people on the wall.”
O LORD of hosts, God of Israel, that dwellest between the cherubims, thou art the God, even thou alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth: thou hast made heaven and earth.
“O LORD of Hosts, God of Israel, enthroned above the
cherubim, You alone are God over all the kingdoms of the
earth. You made the heavens and the
earth.
Incline thine
ear, O LORD, and hear; open thine eyes, O LORD, and see: and hear all the words of
Sennacherib, which hath sent to reproach the living God.
Incline Your
ear, O LORD, and hear; open Your eyes, O LORD, and see.
Listen to all the words that
Sennacherib has sent to
defy the living God.
Now therefore, O LORD our God, save us from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that thou art the LORD, even thou only.
And now, O LORD our God, save us from his hand, so that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that You alone, O LORD, are God.”
Because thy
rage against me, and thy
tumult, is come up into mine
ears, therefore will I put my hook in thy nose, and my
bridle in thy lips, and I will turn thee back by the way by which thou camest.
Because your
rage and
arrogance against Me have reached My
ears, I will put My hook in your nose and My
bit in your mouth; I will send you back the way you came.’
Then the angel of the LORD went forth, and
smote in the camp of the Assyrians a hundred and
fourscore and five thousand: and when they arose
early in the morning, behold, they were all dead corpses.
Then the angel of the LORD went out and struck down 185,000 men in the camp of the Assyrians. When the people got up the next morning, there were all the dead bodies!
Who hath measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, and meted out heaven with the span, and
comprehended the dust of the
earth in a measure, and
weighed the mountains in scales, and the hills in a balance?
Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, or marked off the heavens with the span of his hand? Who has held the dust of the
earth in a
basket, or
weighed the mountains on a scale and the hills with a balance?
