Grain
for bread must be ground, but it is not endlessly
threshed. Though the wheels of the
cart roll over it, the horses do not
crush it.
This also cometh forth from the LORD of hosts, which is wonderful in counsel, and excellent in working.
This also comes from the LORD of Hosts, who is wonderful in counsel and excellent in wisdom.
And I will camp against thee round about, and will lay siege against thee with a mount, and I will raise forts against thee.
I will camp in a circle around you; I will
besiege you with towers and set up siege works against you.
It shall even be as when an
hungry man dreameth, and, behold, he eateth; but he awaketh, and his soul is empty: or as when a
thirsty man dreameth, and, behold, he drinketh; but he awaketh, and, behold, he is
faint, and his soul hath
appetite: so shall the multitude of all the nations be, that fight against mount
Zion.
as when a
hungry man dreams he is eating, then awakens still
hungry; as when a
thirsty man dreams he is drinking, then awakens
faint and
parched. So will it be
for all the many nations who go to battle against Mount
Zion.
For the LORD hath poured out upon you the spirit of deep sleep, and hath closed your eyes: the prophets and your rulers, the seers hath he covered.
For the LORD has poured out on you a spirit of deep sleep. He has shut your eyes, O prophets; He has covered your heads, O seers.
And the vision of all is become unto you as the words of a book that is sealed, which men deliver to one that is learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee: and he saith, I cannot; for it is sealed:
And the entire vision will be to you like the words sealed in a
scroll. If it is handed to someone to read, he will say, “I cannot, because it is sealed.”
Wherefore the Lord said,
Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the
precept of men:
Therefore the Lord said: “These people draw near to Me with their mouths and honor Me with their lips, but their hearts are far from Me. Their worship of Me is but rules taught by men.
Therefore, behold, I will proceed to do a marvellous work among this people, even a marvellous work and a wonder:
for the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the understanding of their
prudent men shall be
hid.
Therefore I will again
confound these people with wonder upon wonder. The wisdom of the wise will
vanish, and the intelligence of the intelligent will be hidden.”
Surely your turning of things
upside down shall be esteemed as the
potter’s clay:
for shall the work say of him that made it, He made me not? or shall the thing framed say of him that framed it, He had no understanding?
You have turned things
upside down, as if the
potter were regarded as clay. Shall what is
formed say to him who
formed it, “He did not make me”? Can the pottery say of the
potter, “He has no understanding”?
Is it not yet a very little while, and
Lebanon shall be turned into a fruitful field, and the fruitful field shall be esteemed as a
forest?
For the terrible one is brought to
nought, and the
scorner is consumed, and all that watch
for iniquity are cut off:
For the
ruthless will
vanish, the mockers will disappear, and all who look
for evil will be cut down—
That make a man an
offender for a word, and lay a
snare for him that reproveth in the gate, and turn aside the just
for a thing of
nought.
those who
indict a man with a word, who
ensnare the
mediator at the gate, and who with false charges deprive the innocent of justice.
But when he
seeth his children, the work of mine hands, in the midst of him, they shall
sanctify my name, and
sanctify the Holy One of Jacob, and shall fear the God of Israel.
For when he sees his children around him, the work of My hands, they will honor My name, they will
sanctify the Holy One of Jacob, and they will stand in
awe of the God of Israel.
Woe to the
rebellious children, saith the LORD, that take counsel, but not of me; and that cover with a covering, but not of my spirit, that they may add sin to sin:
“
Woe to the
rebellious children,” declares the LORD, “to those who carry out a plan that is not Mine, who
form an alliance, but against My will,
heaping up sin upon sin.
For his princes were at Zoan, and his ambassadors came to Hanes.
For though their princes are at Zoan and their envoys have arrived in Hanes,
They were all
ashamed of a people that could not profit them, nor be an help nor profit, but a shame, and also a reproach.
everyone will be put to shame because of a people useless to them. They cannot be of help; they are good
for nothing but shame and reproach.”
For the Egyptians shall help in vain, and to no purpose: therefore have I
cried concerning this, Their strength is to sit still.
Egypt’s help is
futile and empty; therefore I have called her
Rahab Who Sits Still.
Now go, write it before them in a table, and note it in a book, that it may be for the time to come for ever and ever:
Go now, write it on a
tablet in their presence and
inscribe it on a
scroll; it will be
for the days to come, a witness
forever and ever.
For thus saith the Lord GOD, the Holy One of Israel; In returning and rest shall ye be saved; in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength: and ye would not.
For the Lord GOD, the Holy One of Israel, has said: “By
repentance and rest you would be saved; your strength would lie in quiet confidence— but you were not willing.”
But ye said, No;
for we will
flee upon horses; therefore shall ye
flee: and, We will
ride upon the swift; therefore shall they that pursue you be swift.
“No,” you say, “we will
flee on horses.” Therefore you will
flee! “We will
ride swift horses,” but your pursuers will be faster.
And therefore will the LORD wait, that he may be
gracious unto you, and therefore will he be
exalted, that he may have mercy upon you:
for the LORD is a God of judgment: blessed are all they that wait
for him.
Therefore the LORD longs to be
gracious to you; therefore He rises to show you
compassion,
for the LORD is a just God. Blessed are all who wait
for Him.
For the people shall dwell in
Zion at Jerusalem: thou shalt
weep no more: he will be very
gracious unto thee at the voice of thy cry; when he shall hear it, he will answer thee.
O people in
Zion who dwell in Jerusalem, you will
weep no more. He will surely be
gracious when you cry
for help; when He hears, He will answer you.
Then shall he give the rain of thy seed, that thou shalt
sow the ground
withal; and bread of the increase of the earth, and it shall be fat and
plenteous: in that day shall thy cattle feed in large pastures.
Then He will send rain
for the seed that you have sown in the ground, and the food that comes from your land will be rich and
plentiful. On that day your cattle will
graze in open pastures.
For through the voice of the LORD shall the Assyrian be beaten down, which
smote with a rod.
For Assyria will be
shattered at the voice of the LORD; He will strike them with His
scepter.
For Tophet is ordained of old;
yea,
for the king it is prepared; he hath made it deep and large: the pile thereof is fire and much wood; the breath of the LORD, like a stream of
brimstone,
doth kindle it.
For Topheth has long been prepared; it has been made ready
for the king. Its funeral
pyre is deep and wide, with
plenty of fire and wood. The breath of the LORD, like a
torrent of burning sulfur, sets it
ablaze.
Woe to them that go down to Egypt
for help; and stay on horses, and trust in
chariots, because they are many; and in
horsemen, because they are very strong; but they look not unto the Holy One of Israel, neither seek the LORD!
Woe to those who go down to Egypt
for help, who
rely on horses, who trust in their abundance of
chariots and in their multitude of
horsemen. They do not look to the Holy One of Israel; they do not seek the LORD.
For thus hath the LORD spoken unto me, Like as the lion and the young lion
roaring on his prey, when a multitude of
shepherds is called
forth against him, he will not be afraid of their voice, nor
abase himself
for the noise of them: so shall the LORD of hosts come down to fight
for mount
Zion, and
for the hill thereof.
For this is what the LORD has said to me: “Like a lion
roaring or a young lion over its prey— and though a band of
shepherds is called out against it, it is not
terrified by their
shouting or subdued by their
clamor— so the LORD of Hosts will come down to do battle on Mount
Zion and its heights.
For in that day every man shall cast away his idols of silver, and his idols of gold, which your own hands have made unto you for a sin.
For on that day, every one of you will
reject the idols of silver and gold that your own hands have
sinfully made.
Then shall the Assyrian fall with the sword, not of a mighty man; and the sword, not of a mean man, shall
devour him: but he shall
flee from the sword, and his young men shall be
discomfited.
“Then Assyria will fall, but not by the sword of man; a sword will
devour them, but not one made by mortals. They will
flee before the sword, and their young men will be put to
forced labor.
And he shall pass over to his strong hold
for fear, and his princes shall be afraid of the
ensign, saith the LORD, whose fire is in
Zion, and his furnace in Jerusalem.
Their rock will pass away
for fear, and their princes will
panic at the sight of the battle standard,” declares the LORD, whose fire is in
Zion, whose furnace is in Jerusalem.
For the
vile person will speak
villany, and his heart will work iniquity, to
practise hypocrisy, and to utter error against the LORD, to make empty the soul of the
hungry, and he will cause the drink of the
thirsty to fail.
But the liberal deviseth liberal things; and by liberal things shall he stand.
But a noble man makes honorable plans; he stands up for worthy causes.
Many days and years shall ye be troubled, ye careless women:
for the
vintage shall fail, the gathering shall not come.
In a little more than a year you will
tremble, O secure ones.
For the
grape harvest will fail and the fruit harvest will not arrive.
They shall
lament for the teats,
for the pleasant fields,
for the fruitful vine.
Beat your breasts for the pleasant fields, for the fruitful vines,
Upon the land of my people shall come up thorns and briers;
yea, upon all the houses of joy in the
joyous city:
and
for the land of my people, overgrown with thorns and briers— even
for every house of
merriment in this city of
revelry.
Because the palaces shall be
forsaken; the multitude of the city shall be left; the
forts and towers shall be
for dens
for ever, a joy of wild
asses, a pasture of flocks;
Until the spirit be poured upon us from on high, and the wilderness be a fruitful field, and the fruitful field be counted for a forest.
until the Spirit is poured out upon us from on high. Then the desert will be an
orchard, and the
orchard will seem like a
forest.
And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
The work of righteousness will be peace; the service of righteousness will be quiet confidence
forever.
When it shall
hail, coming down on the
forest; and the city shall be low in a low place.
But
hail will level the
forest, and the city will sink to the depths.
Blessed are ye that
sow beside all waters, that send
forth thither the feet of the ox and the
ass.
Blessed are those who
sow beside abundant waters, who let the ox and
donkey range freely.
O LORD, be
gracious unto us; we have waited
for thee: be thou their arm every morning, our salvation also in the time of trouble.
O LORD, be
gracious to us! We wait
for You. Be our strength every morning and our salvation in time of trouble.
The LORD is
exalted;
for he dwelleth on high: he hath filled
Zion with judgment and righteousness.
The LORD is
exalted,
for He dwells on high; He has filled
Zion with justice and righteousness.
And wisdom and knowledge shall be the stability of thy times, and strength of salvation: the fear of the LORD is his
treasure.
He will be the sure foundation
for your times, a
storehouse of salvation, wisdom, and knowledge. The fear of the LORD is
Zion’s
treasure.
Ye shall conceive
chaff, ye shall bring
forth stubble: your breath, as fire, shall
devour you.
He shall dwell on high: his place of defence shall be the munitions of rocks: bread shall be given him; his waters shall be sure.
he will dwell on the heights; the mountain
fortress will be his refuge; his food will be provided and his water
assured.
Thine heart shall
meditate terror. Where is the
scribe? where is the receiver? where is he that counted the towers?
Your mind will
ponder the
former terror: “Where is he who
tallies? Where is he who weighs? Where is he who counts the towers?”
But there the glorious LORD will be unto us a place of broad rivers and streams; wherein shall go no
galley with oars, neither shall
gallant ship pass thereby.
But there the
Majestic One, our LORD, will be
for us a place of rivers and wide canals, where no
galley with oars will row, and no
majestic vessel will pass.
For the LORD is our judge, the LORD is our
lawgiver, the LORD is our king; he will save us.
For the LORD is our Judge, the LORD is our
lawgiver, the LORD is our King. It is He who will save us.
And the inhabitant shall not say, I am sick: the people that dwell therein shall be
forgiven their iniquity.
And no resident of
Zion will say, “I am sick.” The people who dwell there will be
forgiven of iniquity.
Come near, ye nations, to hear; and
hearken, ye people: let the earth hear, and all that is therein; the world, and all things that come
forth of it.
Come near, O nations, to
listen; pay attention, O peoples. Let the earth hear, and all that fills it, the world and all that springs from it.
For the
indignation of the LORD is upon all nations, and his
fury upon all their armies: he hath utterly destroyed them, he hath delivered them to the slaughter.
The LORD is
angry with all the nations and
furious with all their armies. He will
devote them to destruction; He will give them over to slaughter.
For my sword shall be bathed in heaven: behold, it shall come down upon
Idumea, and upon the people of my
curse, to judgment.
When My sword has
drunk its fill in the heavens, then it will come down upon
Edom, upon the people I have devoted to destruction.
The sword of the LORD is filled with blood, it is made fat with fatness, and with the blood of lambs and goats, with the fat of the
kidneys of rams:
for the LORD hath a sacrifice in
Bozrah, and a great slaughter in the land of
Idumea.
The sword of the LORD is bathed in blood. It drips with fat— with the blood of lambs and goats, with the fat of the
kidneys of rams.
For the LORD has a sacrifice in
Bozrah, a great slaughter in the land of
Edom.
For it is the day of the LORD’S
vengeance, and the year of recompences
for the controversy of
Zion.
It shall not be
quenched night nor day; the smoke thereof shall go up
for ever: from generation to generation it shall lie waste; none shall pass through it
for ever and ever.
It will not be
quenched—day or night. Its smoke will
ascend forever. From generation to generation it will lie
desolate; no one will ever again pass through it.
And thorns shall come up in her palaces,
nettles and brambles in the
fortresses thereof: and it shall be an
habitation of
dragons, and a court
for owls.
Her towers will be overgrown with thorns, her
fortresses with thistles and briers. She will become a
haunt for jackals, an abode
for ostriches.
The wild beasts of the desert shall also meet with the wild beasts of the island, and the
satyr shall cry to his fellow; the
screech owl also shall rest there, and find
for herself a place of rest.
The desert creatures will meet with
hyenas, and one wild goat will call to another. There the night creature will settle and find her place of
repose.
Seek ye out of the book of the LORD, and read: no one of these shall fail, none shall want her
mate:
for my mouth it hath commanded, and his spirit it hath gathered them.
Search and read the
scroll of the LORD: Not one of these will go missing, not one will lack her
mate, because He has ordered it by His mouth, and He will gather them by His Spirit.
And he hath cast the lot for them, and his hand hath divided it unto them by line: they shall possess it for ever, from generation to generation shall they dwell therein.
He has
allotted their portion; His hand has distributed it by measure. They will possess it
forever; they will dwell in it from generation to generation.
The wilderness and the solitary place shall be
glad for them; and the desert shall
rejoice, and
blossom as the rose.
The wilderness and the land will be
glad; the desert will
rejoice and
blossom like a rose.
Then shall the
lame man
leap as an
hart, and the tongue of the
dumb sing:
for in the wilderness shall waters break out, and streams in the desert.
Then the
lame will
leap like a deer and the
mute tongue will
shout for joy.
For waters will
gush forth in the wilderness, and streams in the desert.
And an
highway shall be there, and a way, and it shall be called The way of
holiness; the unclean shall not pass over it; but it shall be
for those: the
wayfaring men, though fools, shall not
err therein.
And there will be a
highway called the Way of
Holiness. The unclean will not travel it— only those who walk in the Way— and fools will not
stray onto it.
Now it came to pass in the
fourteenth year of king
Hezekiah, that
Sennacherib king of Assyria came up against all the defenced cities of Judah, and took them.
Then came
forth unto him Eliakim, Hilkiah’s son, which was over the house, and Shebna the
scribe, and Joah,
Asaph’s son, the recorder.
Then Eliakim son of Hilkiah the palace
administrator, Shebna the
scribe, and Joah son of
Asaph the recorder, went out to him.
I say, sayest thou, (but they are but vain words) I have counsel and strength
for war: now on whom
dost thou trust, that thou rebellest against me?
You claim to have a
strategy and strength
for war, but these are empty words. In whom are you now trusting, that you have rebelled against me?
How then
wilt thou turn away the face of one captain of the least of my master’s servants, and put thy trust on Egypt
for chariots and
for horsemen?
For how can you
repel a single officer among the least of my master’s servants when you depend on Egypt
for chariots and
horsemen?
Then said Eliakim and Shebna and Joah unto
Rabshakeh, Speak, I pray thee, unto thy servants in the
Syrian language;
for we understand it: and speak not to us in the Jews’ language, in the ears of the people that are on the wall.
Then Eliakim, Shebna, and Joah said to the
Rabshakeh, “Please speak to your servants in
Aramaic, since we understand it. Do not speak to us in Hebrew in the hearing of the people on the wall.”
Thus saith the king, Let not
Hezekiah deceive you:
for he shall not be able to deliver you.
This is what the king says: Do not let
Hezekiah deceive you,
for he cannot deliver you.
Hearken not to
Hezekiah:
for thus saith the king of Assyria, Make an agreement with me by a present, and come out to me: and eat ye every one of his vine, and every one of his fig tree, and drink ye every one the waters of his own
cistern;
Do not
listen to
Hezekiah,
for this is what the king of Assyria says: Make peace with me and come out to me. Then every one of you will eat from his own vine and his own fig tree, and drink water from his own
cistern,
But they held their peace, and answered him not a word: for the king’s commandment was, saying, Answer him not.
But the people remained silent and did not answer a word,
for Hezekiah had commanded, “Do not answer him.”
And they said unto him, Thus saith
Hezekiah, This day is a day of trouble, and of
rebuke, and of
blasphemy:
for the children are come to the birth, and there is not strength to bring
forth.
to tell him, “This is what
Hezekiah says:
Today is a day of distress,
rebuke, and disgrace;
for children have come to the point of birth, but there is no strength to deliver them.
It may be the LORD thy God will hear the words of
Rabshakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master hath sent to reproach the living God, and will reprove the words which the LORD thy God hath heard: wherefore lift up thy prayer
for the
remnant that is left.
Perhaps the LORD your God will hear the words of the
Rabshakeh, whom his master the king of Assyria has sent to
defy the living God, and He will
rebuke him
for the words that the LORD your God has heard. Therefore lift up a prayer
for the
remnant that still survives.”
When the
Rabshakeh heard that the king of Assyria had left
Lachish, he withdrew and found the king fighting against
Libnah.
And he heard say concerning Tirhakah king of
Ethiopia, He is come
forth to make war with thee. And when he heard it, he sent messengers to
Hezekiah, saying,
And have cast their gods into the fire: for they were no gods, but the work of men’s hands, wood and stone: therefore they have destroyed them.
They have cast their gods into the fire and destroyed them, for they were not gods, but only wood and stone—the work of human hands.
By thy servants hast thou reproached the Lord, and hast said, By the multitude of my
chariots am I come up to the height of the mountains, to the sides of
Lebanon; and I will cut down the tall cedars thereof, and the choice
fir trees thereof: and I will enter into the height of his border, and the
forest of his
Carmel.
Through your servants you have
taunted the Lord, and you have said: “With my many
chariots I have ascended to the heights of the mountains, to the remote peaks of
Lebanon. I have cut down its tallest cedars, the finest of its
cypresses. I have reached its
farthest heights, the densest of its
forests.
I have
digged, and
drunk water; and with the sole of my feet have I dried up all the rivers of the besieged places.
I have
dug wells and
drunk foreign waters. With the soles of my feet I have dried up all the streams of Egypt.”
Hast thou not heard long ago, how I have done it; and of ancient times, that I have
formed it? now have I brought it to pass, that thou shouldest be to lay waste defenced cities into
ruinous heaps.
Have you not heard? Long ago I ordained it; in days of old I
planned it. Now I have brought it to pass, that you should
crush fortified cities into piles of
rubble.
For out of Jerusalem shall go
forth a
remnant, and they that escape out of mount
Zion: the zeal of the LORD of hosts shall do this.
For a
remnant will go
forth from Jerusalem, and survivors from Mount
Zion. The zeal of the LORD of Hosts will
accomplish this.
For I will defend this city to save it for mine own sake, and for my servant David’s sake.
‘I will defend this city and save it for My own sake and for the sake of My servant David.’”
Then the angel of the LORD went
forth, and
smote in the camp of the Assyrians a hundred and
fourscore and five thousand: and when they arose early in the morning, behold, they were all dead corpses.
Then the angel of the LORD went out and struck down 185,000 men in the camp of the Assyrians. When the people got up the next morning, there were all the dead bodies!
In those days was
Hezekiah sick unto death. And Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz came unto him, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Set thine house in order:
for thou shalt die, and not live.
In those days
Hezekiah became
mortally ill. The prophet Isaiah son of Amoz came to him and said, “This is what the LORD says: ‘Put your house in order,
for you are about to die; you will not recover.’”
Behold, for peace I had great bitterness: but thou hast in love to my soul delivered it from the pit of corruption: for thou hast cast all my sins behind thy back.
Surely
for my own
welfare I had such great
anguish; but Your love has delivered me from the pit of
oblivion,
for You have cast all my sins behind Your back.
For the grave cannot praise thee, death can not
celebrate thee: they that go down into the pit cannot hope
for thy truth.
For Sheol cannot
thank You; Death cannot praise You. Those who descend to the Pit cannot hope
for Your faithfulness.
For Isaiah had said, Let them take a
lump of figs, and lay it
for a
plaister upon the
boil, and he shall recover.
Now Isaiah had said, “Prepare a
lump of pressed figs and apply it to the
boil, and he will recover.”
At that time Merodach-baladan, the son of Baladan, king of Babylon, sent letters and a present to
Hezekiah:
for he had heard that he had been sick, and was recovered.
At that time Merodach-baladan son of Baladan king of Babylon sent letters and a gift to
Hezekiah,
for he had heard about
Hezekiah’s illness and recovery.
Then said
Hezekiah to Isaiah, Good is the word of the LORD which thou hast spoken. He said moreover,
For there shall be peace and truth in my days.
But
Hezekiah said to Isaiah, “The word of the LORD that you have spoken is good.”
For he thought, “At least there will be peace and security in my lifetime.”
Speak ye
comfortably to Jerusalem, and cry unto her, that her warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity is
pardoned:
for she hath received of the LORD’S hand double
for all her sins.
“Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and
proclaim to her that her
forced labor has been completed; her iniquity has been
pardoned.
For she has received from the hand of the LORD double
for all her sins.”
The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a
highway for our God.
A voice of one calling: “Prepare the way
for the LORD in the wilderness; make a straight
highway for our God in the desert.
And the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.
And the glory of the LORD will be revealed, and all humanity together will see it. For the mouth of the LORD has spoken.”
The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.
The grass
withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God stands
forever.”
Behold, the Lord GOD will come with strong hand, and his arm shall rule for him: behold, his reward is with him, and his work before him.
Behold, the Lord GOD comes with might, and His arm establishes His rule. His reward is with Him, and His
recompense accompanies Him.
And
Lebanon is not sufficient to burn, nor the beasts thereof sufficient
for a burnt offering.
Lebanon is not sufficient
for fuel, nor its animals enough
for a burnt offering.
Lift up your eyes on high, and behold who hath created these things, that bringeth out their host by number: he calleth them all by names by the greatness of his might, for that he is strong in power; not one faileth.
Lift up your eyes on high: Who created all these? He leads
forth the
starry host by number; He calls each one by name. Because of His great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing.
Keep silence before me, O islands; and let the people renew their strength: let them come near; then let them speak: let us come near together to judgment.
“Be silent before Me, O islands, and let the peoples renew their strength. Let them come
forward and
testify; let us together draw near
for judgment.
Who hath wrought and done it, calling the generations from the beginning? I the LORD, the first, and with the last; I am he.
Who has performed this and carried it out, calling forth the generations from the beginning? I, the LORD—the first and the last— I am He.”
The isles saw it, and feared; the ends of the earth were afraid, drew near, and came.
The islands see and fear; the ends of the earth
tremble. They approach and come
forward.
So the
carpenter encouraged the
goldsmith, and he that smootheth with the hammer him that
smote the
anvil, saying, It is ready
for the sodering: and he fastened it with
nails, that it should not be moved.
