For thy Maker is thine husband; the LORD of hosts is
his name; and thy
Redeemer the Holy One of Israel; The God of the whole earth shall he be called.
For your husband is your Maker— the LORD of Hosts is
His name— the Holy One of Israel is your
Redeemer; He is called the God of all the earth.
Behold, I have created the smith that bloweth the coals in the fire, and that bringeth forth an instrument for his work; and I have created the waster to destroy.
Behold, I have created the
craftsman who fans the coals into flame and forges a weapon fit for its task; and I have created the destroyer to
wreak havoc.
Let the wicked
forsake his way, and the unrighteous man
his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly
pardon.
Let the wicked man
forsake his own way and the unrighteous man
his own thoughts; let him return to the LORD, that He may have
compassion, and to our God, for He will freely
pardon.
Blessed is the man that doeth this, and the son of man that layeth hold on it; that keepeth the sabbath from
polluting it, and keepeth
his hand from doing any evil.
Blessed is the man who does this, and the son of man who holds it fast, who keeps the Sabbath without
profaning it and keeps
his hand from doing any evil.”
Neither let the son of the stranger, that hath joined himself to the LORD, speak, saying, The LORD hath utterly separated me from
his people: neither let the
eunuch say, Behold, I am a dry tree.
Let no foreigner who has joined himself to the LORD say, “The LORD will utterly
exclude me from
His people.” And let the
eunuch not say, “I am but a dry tree.”
Also the sons of the stranger, that join themselves to the LORD, to serve him, and to love the name of the LORD, to be
his servants, every one that keepeth the sabbath from
polluting it, and taketh hold of my covenant;
And the foreigners who join themselves to the LORD to minister to Him, to love the name of the LORD, and to be
His servants— all who keep the Sabbath without
profaning it and who hold fast to My covenant—
His watchmen are blind: they are all ignorant, they are all
dumb dogs, they cannot bark; sleeping, lying down, loving to
slumber.
Israel’s
watchmen are blind, they are all
oblivious; they are all
mute dogs, they cannot bark; they are dreamers lying around, loving to
slumber.
Yea, they are
greedy dogs which can never have enough, and they are
shepherds that cannot understand: they all look to their own way, every one for
his gain, from
his quarter.
Like
ravenous dogs, they are never satisfied. They are
shepherds with no
discernment; they all turn to their own way, each one seeking
his own gain:
He shall enter into peace: they shall rest in their beds, each one walking in his uprightness.
Those who walk uprightly enter into peace; they find rest, lying down in death.
When thou criest, let thy companies deliver thee; but the wind shall carry them all away; vanity shall take them: but he that putteth
his trust in me shall possess the land, and shall
inherit my holy mountain;
When you cry out, let your companies of idols deliver you! Yet the wind will carry off all of them, a breath will take them away. But he who seeks refuge in Me will
inherit the land and possess My holy mountain.”
I was
enraged by
his sinful
greed, so I struck him and
hid My face in anger; yet he kept turning back to the desires of
his heart.
I have seen
his ways, and will
heal him: I will lead him also, and restore comforts unto him and to
his mourners.
I have seen
his ways, but I will
heal him; I will guide him and restore comfort to him and
his mourners,
Is it such a fast that I have chosen? a day for a man to
afflict his soul? is it to bow down
his head as a
bulrush, and to spread
sackcloth and ashes under him?
wilt thou call this a fast, and an acceptable day to the LORD?
Is this the fast I have chosen: a day for a man to deny himself, to bow
his head like a reed, and to spread out
sackcloth and ashes? Will you call this a fast and a day acceptable to the LORD?
Behold, the LORD’S hand is not
shortened, that it cannot save; neither
his ear heavy, that it cannot hear:
Surely the arm of the LORD is not too short to save, nor His ear too dull to hear.
But your
iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have
hid his face from you, that he will not hear.
But your
iniquities have built barriers between you and your God, and your sins have hidden
His face from you, so that He does not hear.
None calleth for justice, nor any pleadeth for truth: they trust in vanity, and speak lies; they conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity.
No one calls for justice; no one pleads
his case
honestly. They
rely on empty pleas; they tell lies; they conceive mischief and give birth to iniquity.
And he saw that there was no man, and wondered that there was no
intercessor: therefore
his arm brought salvation unto him; and
his righteousness, it sustained him.
He saw that there was no man; He was
amazed that there was no one to
intercede. So
His own arm brought salvation, and
His own righteousness sustained Him.
For he put on righteousness as a
breastplate, and an
helmet of salvation upon
his head; and he put on the garments of
vengeance for clothing, and was
clad with zeal as a
cloke.
According to their deeds, accordingly he will repay,
fury to
his adversaries, recompence to
his enemies; to the islands he will repay recompence.
So shall they fear the name of the LORD from the west, and his glory from the rising of the sun. When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the LORD shall lift up a standard against him.
So shall they fear the name of the LORD where the sun sets, and
His glory where it rises. For He will come like a
raging flood, driven by the breath of the LORD.
For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: but the LORD shall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee.
For behold, darkness covers the earth, and thick darkness is over the peoples; but the LORD will rise upon you, and His glory will appear over you.
A little one shall become a thousand, and a small one a strong nation: I the LORD will
hasten it in
his time.
The least of you will become a thousand, and the smallest a mighty nation. I am the LORD; in its time I will
accomplish it quickly.
Thou shalt no more be termed
Forsaken; neither shall thy land any more be termed
Desolate: but thou shalt be called Hephzi-
bah, and thy land Beulah: for the LORD delighteth in thee, and thy land shall be married.
No longer will you be called
Forsaken, nor your land named
Desolate; but you will be called Hephzibah, and your land Beulah; for the LORD will take delight in you, and your land will be
His bride.
For as a young man marrieth a virgin, so shall thy sons marry thee: and as the
bridegroom rejoiceth over the
bride, so shall thy God
rejoice over thee.
For as a young man marries a young woman, so your sons will marry you; and as a
bridegroom rejoices over
his bride, so your God will
rejoice over you.
The LORD hath
sworn by
his right hand, and by the arm of
his strength, Surely I will no more give thy corn to be meat for thine enemies; and the sons of the stranger shall not drink thy wine, for the which thou hast laboured:
The LORD has
sworn by
His right hand and by
His mighty arm: “Never again will I give your grain to your enemies for food, nor will foreigners drink the new wine for which you have
toiled.
Behold, the LORD hath proclaimed unto the end of the world, Say ye to the daughter of
Zion, Behold, thy salvation cometh; behold,
his reward is with him, and
his work before him.
Behold, the LORD has proclaimed to the ends of the earth, “Say to Daughter
Zion: See, your
Savior comes! Look,
His reward is with Him, and
His recompense goes before Him.”
Who is this that cometh from
Edom, with
dyed garments from
Bozrah? this that is glorious in
his apparel, travelling in the greatness of
his strength? I that speak in righteousness, mighty to save.
I will mention the lovingkindnesses of the LORD, and the praises of the LORD, according to all that the LORD hath bestowed on us, and the great goodness toward the house of Israel, which he hath bestowed on them according to
his mercies, and according to the multitude of
his lovingkindnesses.
I will make known the LORD’s loving devotion and
His praiseworthy acts, because of all that the LORD has done for us— the many good things for the house of Israel according to
His great
compassion and loving devotion.
In all their
affliction he was
afflicted, and the angel of
his presence saved them: in
his love and in
his pity he redeemed them; and he bare them, and carried them all the days of old.
In all their distress, He too was
afflicted, and the Angel of
His Presence saved them. In
His love and
compassion He redeemed them; He lifted them up and carried them all the days of old.
But they rebelled, and
vexed his holy Spirit: therefore he was turned to be their enemy, and he fought against them.
But they rebelled and
grieved His Holy Spirit. So He turned and became their enemy, and He Himself fought against them.
Then he remembered the days of old, Moses, and
his people, saying, Where is he that brought them up out of the sea with the
shepherd of
his flock? where is he that put
his holy Spirit within him?
Then
His people remembered the days of old, the days of Moses. Where is He who brought them through the sea with the
shepherds of
His flock? Where is the One who set
His Holy Spirit among them,
That led them by the right hand of Moses with
his glorious arm, dividing the water before them, to make himself an
everlasting name?
who sent
His glorious arm to lead them by the right hand of Moses, who divided the waters before them to gain for Himself
everlasting renown,
And ye shall leave your name for a
curse unto my chosen: for the Lord GOD shall
slay thee, and call
his servants by another name:
You will leave behind your name as a
curse for My chosen ones, and the Lord GOD will
slay you; but to
His servants He will give another name.
There shall be no more thence an infant of days, nor an old man that hath not filled
his days: for the child shall die an hundred years old; but the
sinner being an hundred years old shall be
accursed.
No longer will a
nursing infant live but a few days, or an old man fail to live out
his years. For the youth will die at a hundred years, and he who fails to reach a hundred will be considered
accursed.
Hear the word of the LORD, ye that
tremble at
his word; your brethren that
hated you, that cast you out for my name’s sake, said, Let the LORD be
glorified: but he shall appear to your joy, and they shall be
ashamed.
You who
tremble at
His word, hear the word of the LORD: “Your brothers who
hate you and
exclude you because of My name have said, ‘Let the LORD be
glorified that we may see your joy!’ But they will be put to shame.”
A voice of noise from the city, a voice from the temple, a voice of the LORD that rendereth recompence to his enemies.
Hear the
uproar from the city;
listen to the voice from the temple! It is the voice of the LORD, repaying
His enemies what they deserve!
As one whom his mother comforteth, so will I comfort you; and ye shall be comforted in Jerusalem.
As a mother comforts her son, so will I comfort you, and you will be
consoled over Jerusalem.”
And when ye see this, your heart shall
rejoice, and your bones shall
flourish like an
herb: and the hand of the LORD shall be known toward
his servants, and
his indignation toward
his enemies.
When you see, you will
rejoice, and you will
flourish like grass; then the hand of the LORD will be revealed to
His servants, but
His wrath will be shown to
His enemies.
For, behold, the LORD will come with fire, and with
his chariots like a
whirlwind, to render
his anger with
fury, and
his rebuke with flames of fire.
For by fire and by
his sword will the LORD
plead with all flesh: and the slain of the LORD shall be many.
For by fire and by
His sword, the LORD will
execute judgment on all flesh, and many will be slain by the LORD.
To whom the word of the LORD came in the days of
Josiah the son of Amon king of Judah, in the
thirteenth year of
his reign.
The word of the LORD came to Jeremiah in the
thirteenth year of the reign of
Josiah son of Amon king of Judah,
Then the LORD put forth his hand, and touched my mouth. And the LORD said unto me, Behold, I have put my words in thy mouth.
Then the LORD reached out His hand, touched my mouth, and said to me: “Behold, I have put My words in your mouth.
For, lo, I will call all the families of the kingdoms of the north, saith the LORD; and they shall come, and they shall set every one his throne at the entering of the gates of Jerusalem, and against all the walls thereof round about, and against all the cities of Judah.
For I am about to
summon all the clans and kingdoms of the north,” declares the LORD. “Their kings will come and set up their thrones at the entrance of the gates of Jerusalem. They will attack all her surrounding walls and all the other cities of Judah.
Israel was
holiness unto the LORD, and the firstfruits of
his increase: all that
devour him shall
offend; evil shall come upon them, saith the LORD.
Israel was holy to the LORD, the firstfruits of
His harvest. All who
devoured her found themselves guilty;
disaster came upon them,’” declares the LORD.
The young lions
roared upon him, and
yelled, and they made
his land waste:
his cities are burned without inhabitant.
The young lions have
roared at him; they have
growled with a loud voice. They have laid waste
his land;
his cities lie in ruins, without inhabitant.
Yet thou sayest, Because I am innocent, surely
his anger shall turn from me. Behold, I will
plead with thee, because thou sayest, I have not
sinned.
you say, ‘I am innocent. Surely
His anger will turn from me.’ Behold, I will judge you, because you say, ‘I have not
sinned.’
They say, If a man put away
his wife, and she go from him, and become another man’s, shall he return unto her again? shall not that land be greatly
polluted? but thou hast played the
harlot with many lovers; yet return again to me, saith the LORD.
“If a man divorces
his wife and she leaves him to marry another, can he ever return to her? Would not such a land be completely
defiled? But you have played the
harlot with many lovers— and you would return to Me?” declares the LORD.
Will he reserve his anger for ever? will he keep it to the end? Behold, thou hast spoken and done evil things as thou couldest.
Will He be
angry forever? Will He be
indignant to the end?’ This you have spoken, but you keep doing all the evil you can.”
The lion is come up from
his thicket, and the destroyer of the Gentiles is on
his way; he is gone forth from
his place to make thy land
desolate; and thy cities shall be laid waste, without an inhabitant.
A lion has gone up from
his thicket, and a destroyer of nations has set out. He has left
his lair to lay waste your land. Your cities will be reduced to ruins and lie uninhabited.
Behold, he shall come up as clouds, and
his chariots shall be as a
whirlwind:
his horses are swifter than eagles.
Woe unto us! for we are
spoiled.
Behold, he advances like the clouds,
his chariots like the
whirlwind.
His horses are swifter than eagles.
Woe to us, for we are ruined!
I
beheld, and, lo, the fruitful place was a wilderness, and all the cities thereof were broken down at the presence of the LORD, and by
his fierce anger.
I looked, and the fruitful land was a desert. All its cities were
torn down before the LORD, before
His fierce anger.
They were as fed horses in the morning: every one
neighed after
his neighbour’s wife.
Neither say they in their heart, Let us now fear the LORD our God, that giveth rain, both the former and the latter, in his season: he reserveth unto us the appointed weeks of the harvest.
They have not said in their hearts, ‘Let us fear the LORD our God, who gives the rains, both autumn and spring, in season, who keeps for us the appointed weeks of harvest.’
The
shepherds with their flocks shall come unto her; they shall pitch their tents against her round about; they shall feed every one in
his place.
Shepherds and their flocks will come against her; they will pitch their tents all around her, each tending
his own portion:
Therefore thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will lay stumblingblocks before this people, and the fathers and the sons together shall fall upon them; the neighbour and his friend shall perish.
Therefore this is what the LORD says: “I will lay
stumbling blocks before this people; fathers and sons alike will be
staggered; friends and neighbors will perish.”
For if ye throughly
amend your ways and your doings; if ye throughly
execute judgment between a man and
his neighbour;
For if you really correct your ways and deeds, if you act justly toward one another,
Cut off thine hair, O Jerusalem, and cast it away, and take up a
lamentation on high places; for the LORD hath rejected and
forsaken the generation of
his wrath.
Cut off your hair and throw it away. Raise up a
lamentation on the barren heights, for the LORD has rejected and
forsaken the generation of
His wrath.’
At that time, saith the LORD, they shall bring out the bones of the kings of Judah, and the bones of his princes, and the bones of the priests, and the bones of the prophets, and the bones of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, out of their graves:
“At that time,” declares the LORD, “the bones of the kings of Judah, the bones of the officials, the bones of the priests, the bones of the prophets, and the bones of the people of Jerusalem will be removed from their graves.
I
hearkened and heard, but they spake not
aright: no man
repented him of
his wickedness, saying, What have I done? every one turned to
his course, as the horse rusheth into the battle.
I have
listened and heard; they do not speak what is right. No one repents of
his wickedness, asking, ‘What have I done?’
Everyone has pursued
his own course like a horse charging into battle.
The
snorting of
his horses was heard from
Dan: the whole land
trembled at the sound of the
neighing of
his strong ones; for they are come, and have
devoured the land, and all that is in it; the city, and those that dwell therein.
The
snorting of enemy horses is heard from
Dan. At the sound of the
neighing of mighty steeds, the whole land quakes. They come to
devour the land and everything in it, the city and all who dwell in it.
Take ye
heed every one of
his neighbour, and trust ye not in any brother: for every brother will utterly
supplant, and every neighbour will walk with slanders.
And they will
deceive every one
his neighbour, and will not speak the truth: they have taught their tongue to speak lies, and
weary themselves to commit iniquity.
Each one betrays
his friend; no one tells the truth. They have taught their tongues to lie; they wear themselves out
committing iniquity.
Their tongue is as an
arrow shot out; it speaketh
deceit: one speaketh
peaceably to
his neighbour with
his mouth, but in heart he layeth
his wait.
Their tongues are deadly arrows; they speak
deception. With
his mouth a man speaks peace to
his neighbor, but in
his heart he sets a
trap for him.
Yet hear the word of the LORD, O ye women, and let your ear receive the word of
his mouth, and teach your daughters
wailing, and every one her neighbour
lamentation.
Now, O women, hear the word of the LORD. Open your ears to the word of
His mouth. Teach your daughters to
wail, and one another to
lament.
Thus saith the LORD, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches:
This is what the LORD says: “Let not the wise man
boast in
his wisdom, nor the strong man in
his strength, nor the wealthy man in
his riches.
But the LORD is the true God, he is the living God, and an
everlasting king: at
his wrath the earth shall
tremble, and the nations shall not be able to
abide his indignation.
But the LORD is the true God; He is the living God and eternal King. The earth quakes at
His wrath, and the nations cannot
endure His indignation.
He hath made the earth by
his power, he hath established the world by
his wisdom, and hath stretched out the heavens by
his discretion.
The LORD made the earth by His power; He established the world by His wisdom and stretched out the heavens by His understanding.
When he uttereth
his voice, there is a multitude of waters in the heavens, and he causeth the vapors to
ascend from the ends of the earth; he maketh lightnings with rain, and bringeth forth the wind out of
his treasures.
When He thunders, the waters in the heavens
roar; He causes the clouds to rise from the ends of the earth. He generates the
lightning with the rain and brings forth the wind from
His storehouses.
Every man is
brutish in
his knowledge: every founder is confounded by the
graven image: for
his molten image is
falsehood, and there is no breath in them.
Every man is senseless and devoid of knowledge; every
goldsmith is put to shame by
his idols. For
his molten images are a
fraud, and there is no breath in them.
The portion of Jacob is not like them: for he is the former of all things; and Israel is the rod of his inheritance: The LORD of hosts is his name.
The Portion of Jacob is not like these, for He is the Maker of all things, and Israel is the tribe of His inheritance— the LORD of Hosts is His name.
O LORD, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps.
I know, O LORD, that a man’s way is not his own; no one who walks directs his own steps.
Pour out thy
fury upon the heathen that know thee not, and upon the families that call not on thy name: for they have eaten up Jacob, and
devoured him, and consumed him, and have made
his habitation desolate.
Pour out Your wrath on the nations that do not acknowledge You, and on the families that do not call on Your name. For they have
devoured Jacob; they have consumed him and finished him off; they have
devastated his homeland.
Yet they obeyed not, nor inclined their ear, but walked every one in the imagination of their evil heart: therefore I will bring upon them all the words of this covenant, which I commanded them to do; but they did them not.
Yet they would not obey or
incline their ears, but each one followed the
stubbornness of
his evil heart. So I brought on them all the curses of this covenant I had commanded them to follow but they did not keep.”
But I was like a lamb or an ox that is brought to the slaughter; and I knew not that they had devised devices against me, saying, Let us destroy the tree with the fruit thereof, and let us cut him off from the land of the living, that his name may be no more remembered.
For I was like a gentle lamb led to slaughter; I did not know that they had
plotted against me: “Let us destroy the tree with its fruit; let us cut him off from the land of the living, that
his name may be remembered no more.”
And it shall come to pass, after that I have
plucked them out I will return, and have
compassion on them, and will bring them again, every man to
his heritage, and every man to
his land.
But after I have uprooted them, I will once again have
compassion on them and return each one to
his inheritance and to
his land.
Can the
Ethiopian change
his skin, or the
leopard his spots? then may ye also do good, that are accustomed to do evil.
Can the
Ethiopian change
his skin, or the
leopard his spots? Neither are you able to do good— you who are accustomed to doing evil.
Both the great and the small shall die in this land: they shall not be buried, neither shall men
lament for them, nor cut themselves, nor make themselves
bald for them:
“Both great and small will die in this land. They will not be buried or
mourned, nor will
anyone cut himself or
shave his head for them.
And ye have done worse than your fathers; for, behold, ye walk every one after the imagination of
his evil heart, that they may not
hearken unto me:
And you have done more evil than your fathers. See how each of you follows the
stubbornness of
his evil heart instead of obeying Me.
Thus saith the LORD;
Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh
his arm, and whose heart departeth from the LORD.
This is what the LORD says: “
Cursed is the man who trusts in mankind, who makes the flesh
his strength and turns
his heart from the LORD.
I the LORD search the heart, I try the
reins, even to give every man according to
his ways, and according to the fruit of
his doings.
I, the LORD, search the heart; I examine the mind to reward a man according to his way, by what his deeds deserve.
As the
partridge sitteth on eggs, and hatcheth them not; so he that getteth riches, and not by right, shall leave them in the midst of
his days, and at
his end shall be a
fool.
Like a
partridge hatching eggs it did not lay is the man who makes a fortune unjustly. In the middle of
his days
his riches will desert him, and in the end he will be the
fool.”
And the vessel that he made of clay was
marred in the hand of the
potter: so he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the
potter to make it.
But the vessel that he was shaping from the clay became
flawed in
his hand; so he formed it into another vessel, as it seemed best for him to do.
O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this
potter? saith the LORD. Behold, as the clay is in the
potter’s hand, so are ye in mine hand, O house of Israel.
“O house of Israel, declares the LORD, can I not treat you as this
potter treats
his clay? Just like clay in the
potter’s hand, so are you in My hand, O house of Israel.
Now therefore go to, speak to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying, Thus saith the LORD; Behold, I frame evil against you, and
devise a
device against you: return ye now every one from
his evil way, and make your ways and your doings good.
Now therefore, tell the men of Judah and the residents of Jerusalem that this is what the LORD says: ‘Behold, I am
planning a
disaster for you and
devising a plan against you. Turn now, each of you, from your evil ways, and correct your ways and deeds.’
And they said, There is no hope: but we will walk after our own devices, and we will every one do the imagination of his evil heart.
But they will reply, ‘It is hopeless. We will follow our own plans, and each of us will act according to the
stubbornness of
his evil heart.’”
Then said they, Come, and let us
devise devices against Jeremiah; for the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, and let us
smite him with the tongue, and let us not give
heed to any of
his words.
Then some said, “Come, let us make plans against Jeremiah, for the law will never be lost to the priest, nor counsel to the wise, nor an
oracle to the prophet. Come, let us
denounce him and pay no
heed to any of
his words.”
And say, Hear ye the word of the LORD, O kings of Judah, and inhabitants of Jerusalem; Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will bring evil upon this place, the which
whosoever heareth,
his ears shall
tingle.
saying, ‘Hear the word of the LORD, O kings of Judah and residents of Jerusalem. This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: I am going to bring such
disaster on this place that the ears of all who hear of it will ring,
And I will make this city
desolate, and an
hissing; every one that passeth thereby shall be
astonished and
hiss because of all the plagues thereof.
And I will cause them to eat the flesh of their sons and the flesh of their daughters, and they shall eat every one the flesh of
his friend in the siege and straitness,
wherewith their enemies, and they that seek their lives, shall
straiten them.
I will make them eat the flesh of their sons and daughters, and they will eat one another’s flesh in the siege and distress inflicted on them by their enemies who seek their lives.’
Then I said, I will not make mention of him, nor speak any more in
his name. But
his word was in mine heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I was
weary with
forbearing, and I could not stay.
If I say, “I will not mention Him or speak any more in
His name,”
His message becomes a fire burning in my heart, shut up in my bones, and I become
weary of holding it in, and I cannot prevail.
Enquire, I pray thee, of the LORD for us; for Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon maketh war against us; if so be that the LORD will deal with us according to all
his wondrous works, that he may go up from us.
“Please inquire of the LORD on our behalf, since
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon is
waging war against us. Perhaps the LORD will perform for us something like all
His past wonders, so that
Nebuchadnezzar will withdraw from us.”
And afterward, saith the LORD, I will deliver
Zedekiah king of Judah, and
his servants, and the people, and such as are left in this city from the
pestilence, from the sword, and from the famine, into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, and into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of those that seek their life: and he shall
smite them with the edge of the sword; he shall not
spare them, neither have
pity, nor have mercy.
‘After that,’ declares the LORD, ‘I will hand over
Zedekiah king of Judah,
his officers, and the people in this city who
survive the plague and sword and famine, to
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and to their enemies who seek their lives. He will put them to the sword; he will not
spare them or show
pity or
compassion.’
He that abideth in this city shall die by the sword, and by the famine, and by the
pestilence: but he that goeth out, and falleth to the Chaldeans that
besiege you, he shall live, and
his life shall be unto him for a prey.
Whoever stays in this city will die by sword and famine and plague, but
whoever goes out and surrenders to the Chaldeans who
besiege you will live; he will retain
his life like a
spoil of war.
O house of David, thus saith the LORD;
Execute judgment in the morning, and deliver him that is
spoiled out of the hand of the
oppressor, lest my
fury go out like fire, and burn that none can
quench it, because of the evil of your doings.
O house of David, this is what the LORD says: ‘
Administer justice every morning, and
rescue the
victim of
robbery from the hand of
his oppressor, or My wrath will go forth like fire and burn with no one to
extinguish it because of their evil deeds.
Thus saith the LORD;
Execute ye judgment and righteousness, and deliver the
spoiled out of the hand of the
oppressor: and do no wrong, do no violence to the stranger, the fatherless, nor the widow, neither shed innocent blood in this place.
This is what the LORD says:
Administer justice and righteousness.
Rescue the
victim of
robbery from the hand of
his oppressor. Do no wrong or violence to the foreigner, the fatherless, or the widow. Do not shed innocent blood in this place.
For if ye do this thing indeed, then shall there enter in by the gates of this house kings sitting upon the throne of David, riding in
chariots and on horses, he, and
his servants, and
his people.
For if you will indeed carry out these commands, then kings who sit on David’s throne will enter through the gates of this palace riding on
chariots and horses—they and their officials and their people.
And I will prepare destroyers against thee, every one with his weapons: and they shall cut down thy choice cedars, and cast them into the fire.
I will
appoint destroyers against you, each man with
his weapons, and they will cut down the choicest of your cedars and throw them into the fire.
And many nations shall pass by this city, and they shall say every man to his neighbour, Wherefore hath the LORD done thus unto this great city?
And many nations will pass by this city and ask one another, ‘Why has the LORD done such a thing to this great city?’
Weep ye not for the dead, neither
bemoan him: but
weep sore for him that goeth away: for he shall return no more, nor see
his native country.
Do not
weep for the dead king; do not
mourn his loss.
Weep bitterly for the one who is exiled, for he will never return to see
his native land.
