Berean Standard Bible BSB Bible
I am the LORD: that is my name: and my glory will I
not give to another, neither my praise to
graven images.
I am the LORD; that is My name! I will not yield My glory to another or My praise to idols.
And I will bring the blind by a way that they knew
not; I will lead them in paths that they have
not known: I will make darkness light before them, and
crooked things straight. These things will I do unto them, and
not forsake them.
I will lead the blind by a way they did
not know; I will guide them on unfamiliar paths. I will turn darkness into light before them and rough places into level ground. These things I will do for them, and I will
not forsake them.
Seeing many things, but thou observest not; opening the ears, but he heareth not.
Though seeing many things, you do not keep watch. Though your ears are open, you do not hear.”
Who gave Jacob for a
spoil, and Israel to the robbers? did
not the LORD, he against whom we have
sinned? for they would
not walk in his ways, neither were they
obedient unto his law.
Who gave Jacob up for
spoil, and Israel to the plunderers? Was it
not the LORD, against whom we have
sinned? They were unwilling to walk in His ways, and they would
not obey His law.
Therefore he hath poured upon him the
fury of his anger, and the strength of battle: and it hath set him on fire round about, yet he knew
not; and it burned him, yet he laid it
not to heart.
So He poured out on them His
furious anger and the fierceness of battle. It
enveloped them in flames, but they did
not understand; it consumed them, but they did
not take it to heart.
But now thus saith the LORD that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine.
Now this is what the LORD says— He who created you, O Jacob, and He who formed you, O Israel: “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; you are Mine!
When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall
not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt
not be burned; neither shall the flame
kindle upon thee.
When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you go through the rivers, they will
not overwhelm you. When you walk through the fire, you will
not be
scorched; the flames will
not set you
ablaze.
Fear not: for I am with thee: I will bring thy seed from the east, and gather thee from the west;
Do not be afraid, for I am with you; I will bring your offspring from the east and gather you from the west.
I will say to the north, Give up; and to the south, Keep not back: bring my sons from far, and my daughters from the ends of the earth;
I will say to the north, ‘Give them up!’ and to the south, ‘Do
not hold them back!’ Bring My sons from
afar, and My daughters from the ends of the earth—
I have declared, and have saved, and I have shewed, when there was no strange god among you: therefore ye are my witnesses, saith the LORD, that I am God.
I alone decreed and saved and proclaimed— I, and not some foreign god among you. So you are My witnesses,” declares the LORD, “that I am God.
Which bringeth forth the
chariot and horse, the army and the power; they shall lie down together, they shall
not rise: they are extinct, they are
quenched as
tow.
Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old.
“Do not call to mind the former things; pay no attention to the things of old.
Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.
Behold, I am about to do something new; even now it is coming. Do you not see it? Indeed, I will make a way in the wilderness and streams in the desert.
But thou hast
not called upon me, O Jacob; but thou hast been
weary of me, O Israel.
But you have
not called on Me, O Jacob, because you have grown
weary of Me, O Israel.
Thou hast
not brought me the small cattle of thy burnt offerings; neither hast thou honoured me with thy sacrifices. I have
not caused thee to serve with an offering, nor
wearied thee with incense.
You have
not brought Me sheep for burnt offerings, nor honored Me with your sacrifices. I have
not burdened you with offerings, nor
wearied you with
frankincense.
Thou hast bought me no sweet cane with money, neither hast thou filled me with the fat of thy sacrifices: but thou hast made me to serve with thy sins, thou hast
wearied me with thine
iniquities.
You have
not bought Me sweet cane with your silver, nor satisfied Me with the fat of your sacrifices. But you have burdened Me with your sins; you have
wearied Me with your
iniquities.
I, even I, am he that blotteth out thy transgressions for mine own sake, and will not remember thy sins.
I,
yes I, am He who blots out your transgressions for My own sake and remembers your sins no more.
Thus saith the LORD that made thee, and formed thee from the
womb, which will help thee; Fear
not, O Jacob, my servant; and thou, Jesurun, whom I have chosen.
This is the word of the LORD, your Maker, who formed you from the
womb and who will help you: “Do
not be afraid, O Jacob My servant,
Jeshurun, whom I have chosen.
Fear ye
not, neither be afraid: have
not I told thee from that time, and have declared it? ye are even my witnesses. Is there a God beside me?
yea, there is no God; I know
not any.
Do
not tremble or fear. Have I
not told you and declared it long ago? You are My witnesses! Is there any God but Me? There is no other Rock; I know
not one.”
They that make a
graven image are all of them vanity; and their
delectable things shall
not profit; and they are their own witnesses; they see
not, nor know; that they may be
ashamed.
All makers of idols are
nothing, and the things they
treasure are worthless. Their witnesses fail to see or
comprehend, so they are put to shame.
Who hath formed a god, or
molten a
graven image that is profitable for
nothing?
Who fashions a god or casts an
idol which profits him
nothing?
They have not known nor understood: for he hath shut their eyes, that they cannot see; and their hearts, that they cannot understand.
They do
not comprehend or
discern, for He has shut their eyes so they cannot see and closed their minds so they cannot understand.
He feedeth on ashes: a
deceived heart hath turned him aside, that he cannot deliver his soul, nor say, Is there
not a lie in my right hand?
He feeds on ashes. His
deluded heart has led him
astray, and he cannot deliver himself or say, “Is
not this thing in my right hand a lie?”
Remember these, O Jacob and Israel; for thou art my servant: I have formed thee; thou art my servant: O Israel, thou shalt not be forgotten of me.
Remember these things, O Jacob, for you are My servant, O Israel. I have made you, and you are My servant; O Israel, I will never
forget you.
Thus saith the LORD to his
anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have
holden, to
subdue nations before him; and I will loose the loins of kings, to open before him the two leaved gates; and the gates shall
not be shut;
This is what the LORD says to Cyrus His
anointed, whose right hand I have
grasped to
subdue nations before him, to disarm kings, to open the doors before him, so that the gates will
not be shut:
For Jacob my servant’s sake, and Israel mine
elect, I have even called thee by thy name: I have
surnamed thee, though thou hast
not known me.
For the sake of Jacob My servant and Israel My chosen one, I call you by name; I have given you a title of honor, though you have not known Me.
I am the LORD, and there is none else, there is no God beside me: I
girded thee, though thou hast
not known me:
I am the LORD, and there is no other; there is no God but Me. I will
equip you for battle, though you have
not known Me,
I have raised him up in righteousness, and I will direct all his ways: he shall build my city, and he shall let go my
captives,
not for price nor reward, saith the LORD of hosts.
I will raise up Cyrus in righteousness, and I will make all his ways straight. He will rebuild My city and set My exiles free, but not for payment or reward, says the LORD of Hosts.”
But Israel shall be saved in the LORD with an
everlasting salvation: ye shall
not be
ashamed nor confounded world without end.
For thus saith the LORD that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited: I am the LORD; and there is none else.
For thus says the LORD, who created the heavens—He is God; He formed the earth and fashioned it; He established it; He did
not create it to be empty, but formed it to be inhabited: “I am the LORD, and there is no other.
I have not spoken in secret, in a dark place of the earth: I said not unto the seed of Jacob, Seek ye me in vain: I the LORD speak righteousness, I declare things that are right.
I have not spoken in secret, from a place in a land of darkness. I did not say to the descendants of Jacob, ‘Seek Me in a wasteland.’ I, the LORD, speak the truth; I say what is right.
Tell ye, and bring them near;
yea, let them take counsel together: who hath declared this from ancient time? who hath told it from that time? have
not I the LORD? and there is no God else beside me; a just God and a Saviour; there is none beside me.
Speak up and present your case—
yes, let them take counsel together. Who
foretold this long ago? Who
announced it from ancient times? Was it
not I, the LORD? There is no other God but Me, a righteous God and
Savior; there is none but Me.
I have
sworn by myself, the word is gone out of my mouth in righteousness, and shall
not return, That unto me every
knee shall bow, every tongue shall
swear.
By Myself I have
sworn; truth has gone out from My mouth, a word that will
not be
revoked: Every
knee will bow before Me, every tongue will
swear allegiance.
They
stoop, they bow down together; they could
not deliver the burden, but themselves are gone into captivity.
The gods cower; they
crouch together, unable to
relieve the burden; but they themselves go into captivity.
They bear him upon the shoulder, they carry him, and set him in his place, and he standeth; from his place shall he
not remove:
yea, one shall cry unto him, yet can he
not answer, nor save him out of his trouble.
They lift it to their shoulder and carry it along; they set it in its place, and there it stands,
not budging from that spot. They cry out to it, but it does
not answer; it saves no one from his troubles.
Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure:
I declare the end from the beginning, and ancient times from what is still to come. I say, ‘My purpose will stand, and all My good pleasure I will
accomplish.’
I bring near my righteousness; it shall
not be far off, and my salvation shall
not tarry: and I will place salvation in
Zion for Israel my glory.
I am bringing My righteousness near; it is
not far away, and My salvation will
not be delayed. I will grant salvation to
Zion and
adorn Israel with My
splendor.
Thy nakedness shall be uncovered,
yea, thy shame shall be seen: I will take
vengeance, and I will
not meet thee as a man.
Your nakedness will be uncovered and your shame will be exposed. I will take
vengeance; I will
spare no one.”
And thou saidst, I shall be a lady for ever: so that thou
didst not lay these things to thy heart, neither
didst remember the latter end of it.
You said, ‘I will be queen
forever.’ You did
not take these things to heart or consider their outcome.
Therefore hear now this, thou that art given to pleasures, that dwellest
carelessly, that sayest in thine heart, I am, and none else beside me; I shall
not sit as a widow, neither shall I know the loss of children:
So now hear this, O lover of
luxury who sits securely, who says to herself, ‘I am, and there is none besides me. I will never be a widow or know the loss of children.’
Therefore shall evil come upon thee; thou shalt
not know from whence it riseth: and mischief shall fall upon thee; thou shalt
not be able to put if off: and
desolation shall come upon thee suddenly, which thou shalt
not know.
But
disaster will come upon you; you will
not know how to charm it away. A
calamity will
befall you that you will be unable to ward off.
Devastation will happen to you suddenly and unexpectedly.
Behold, they shall be as
stubble; the fire shall burn them; they shall
not deliver themselves from the power of the flame: there shall
not be a coal to warm at, nor fire to sit before it.
Surely they are like
stubble; the fire will burn them up. They cannot deliver themselves from the power of the flame. There will be no coals to warm them or fire to sit beside.
Thus shall they be unto thee with whom thou hast laboured, even thy merchants, from thy youth: they shall
wander every one to his quarter; none shall save thee.
This is what they are to you— those with whom you have labored and traded from youth— each one strays in his own direction; not one of them can save you.
Hear ye this, O house of Jacob, which are called by the name of Israel, and are come forth out of the waters of Judah, which
swear by the name of the LORD, and make mention of the God of Israel, but
not in truth, nor in righteousness.
“
Listen to this, O house of Jacob, you who are called by the name of Israel, who have descended from the line of Judah, who
swear by the name of the LORD, who
invoke the God of Israel— but
not in truth or righteousness—
I have even from the beginning declared it to thee; before it came to pass I shewed it thee: lest thou shouldest say, Mine
idol hath done them, and my
graven image, and my
molten image, hath commanded them.
Therefore I declared it to you long ago; I
announced it before it came to pass, so that you could
not claim, ‘My
idol has done this; my carved image and
molten god has ordained it.’
Thou hast heard, see all this; and will
not ye declare it? I have shewed thee new things from this time, even hidden things, and thou
didst not know them.
You have heard these things; look at them all. Will you not acknowledge them? From now on I will tell you of new things, hidden things unknown to you.
They are created now, and not from the beginning; even before the day when thou heardest them not; lest thou shouldest say, Behold, I knew them.
They are created now, and
not long ago; you have
not heard of them before
today. So you cannot claim, ‘I already knew them!’
You have never heard; you have never understood; for a long time your ears have
not been open. For I knew how
deceitful you are; you have been called a
rebel from birth.
For my name’s sake will I
defer mine anger, and for my praise will I
refrain for thee, that I cut thee
not off.
For the sake of My name I will delay My wrath; for the sake of My praise I will restrain it, so that you will not be cut off.
Behold, I have refined thee, but
not with silver; I have chosen thee in the furnace of
affliction.
See, I have refined you, but
not as silver; I have tested you in the furnace of
affliction.
For mine own sake, even for mine own sake, will I do it: for how should my name be
polluted? and I will
not give my glory unto another.
For My own sake, My very own sake, I will act; for how can I let Myself be
defamed? I will
not yield My glory to another.
Come ye near unto me, hear ye this; I have not spoken in secret from the beginning; from the time that it was, there am I: and now the Lord GOD, and his Spirit, hath sent me.
Come near to Me and
listen to this: From the beginning I have
not spoken in secret; from the time it happened, I was there.” And now the Lord GOD has sent me, accompanied by His Spirit.
Thy seed also had been as the sand, and the offspring of thy
bowels like the gravel thereof; his name should
not have been cut off nor destroyed from before me.
Your descendants would have been as countless as the sand, and your offspring as numerous as its grains; their name would never be cut off or
eliminated from My presence.”
And they
thirsted not when he led them through the deserts: he caused the waters to flow out of the rock for them: he
clave the rock also, and the waters
gushed out.
They did
not thirst when He led them through the deserts; He made water flow for them from the rock; He split the rock, and water
gushed out.
And now, saith the LORD that formed me from the
womb to be his servant, to bring Jacob again to him, Though Israel be
not gathered, yet shall I be glorious in the eyes of the LORD, and my God shall be my strength.
And now says the LORD, who formed Me from the
womb to be His Servant, to bring Jacob back to Him, that Israel might be gathered to Him— for I am honored in the sight of the LORD, and My God is My strength—
And he said, It is a light thing that thou shouldest be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved of Israel: I will also give thee for a light to the Gentiles, that thou mayest be my salvation unto the end of the earth.
He says: “It is not enough for You to be My Servant, to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the protected ones of Israel. I will also make You a light for the nations, to bring My salvation to the ends of the earth.”
They shall
not hunger nor
thirst; neither shall the heat nor sun
smite them: for he that hath mercy on them shall lead them, even by the springs of water shall he guide them.
They will
not hunger or
thirst, nor will
scorching heat or sun beat down on them. For He who has
compassion on them will guide them and lead them beside springs of water.
And kings shall be thy
nursing fathers, and their queens thy
nursing mothers: they shall bow down to thee with their face toward the earth, and
lick up the dust of thy feet; and thou shalt know that I am the LORD: for they shall
not be
ashamed that wait for me.
Kings will be your
foster fathers, and their queens your
nursing mothers. They will bow to you facedown and
lick the dust at your feet. Then you will know that I am the LORD; those who hope in Me will never be put to shame.”
The Lord GOD hath opened mine ear, and I was
not rebellious, neither turned away back.
The Lord GOD has opened My ears, and I have
not been
rebellious, nor have I turned back.
I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that
plucked off the hair: I
hid not my face from shame and
spitting.
I offered My back to those who struck Me, and My cheeks to those who
tore out My
beard. I did
not hide My face from
scorn and
spittle.
For the Lord GOD will help me; therefore shall I
not be confounded: therefore have I set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall
not be
ashamed.
Because the Lord GOD helps Me, I have not been disgraced; therefore I have set My face like flint, and I know that I will not be put to shame.
Lift up your eyes to the heavens, and look upon the earth beneath: for the heavens shall
vanish away like smoke, and the earth shall wax old like a garment, and they that dwell therein shall die in like manner: but my salvation shall be for ever, and my righteousness shall
not be abolished.
Lift up your eyes to the heavens, and look at the earth below; for the heavens will
vanish like smoke, the earth will wear out like a garment, and its people will die like gnats. But My salvation will last
forever, and My righteousness will never fail.
Hearken unto me, ye that know righteousness, the people in whose heart is my law; fear ye
not the reproach of men, neither be ye afraid of their revilings.
Listen to Me, you who know what is right, you people with My law in your hearts: Do
not fear the
scorn of men; do
not be broken by their insults.
Awake,
awake, put on strength, O arm of the LORD;
awake, as in the ancient days, in the generations of old. Art thou
not it that hath cut
Rahab, and wounded the
dragon?
Awake,
awake, put on strength, O arm of the LORD.
Wake up as in days past, as in generations of old. Was it
not You who cut
Rahab to pieces, who pierced through the
dragon?
Art thou
not it which hath dried the sea, the waters of the great deep; that hath made the depths of the sea a way for the
ransomed to pass over?
Was it not You who dried up the sea, the waters of the great deep, who made a road in the depths of the sea for the redeemed to cross over?
The
captive exile hasteneth that he may be loosed, and that he should
not die in the pit, nor that his bread should fail.
The
captive will soon be freed; he will
not die in the
dungeon, and his bread will
not be lacking.
For thus saith the LORD, Ye have sold
yourselves for
nought; and ye shall be redeemed without money.
For this is what the LORD says: “You were sold for nothing, and without money you will be redeemed.”
For ye shall
not go out with
haste, nor go by flight: for the LORD will go before you; and the God of Israel will be your rereward.
For you will
not leave in a
hurry nor
flee in
haste, for the LORD goes before you, and the God of Israel is your rear guard.
So shall he
sprinkle many nations; the kings shall shut their mouths at him: for that which had
not been told them shall they see; and that which they had
not heard shall they consider.
so He will
sprinkle many nations. Kings will shut their mouths because of Him. For they will see what they have
not been told, and they will understand what they have
not heard.
He is
despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we
hid as it were our faces from him; he was
despised, and we esteemed him
not.
He was
despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, acquainted with grief. Like one from whom men hide their faces, He was
despised, and we esteemed Him
not.
He was
oppressed, and he was
afflicted, yet he opened
not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is
dumb, so he openeth
not his mouth.
He was
oppressed and
afflicted, yet He did
not open His mouth. He was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is silent, so He did
not open His mouth.
Sing, O barren, thou that
didst not bear; break forth into singing, and cry
aloud, thou that
didst not travail with child: for more are the children of the
desolate than the children of the married wife, saith the LORD.
“
Shout for joy, O barren woman, who bears no children; break forth in song and cry
aloud, you who have never
travailed; because more are the children of the
desolate woman than of her who has a husband,” says the LORD.
Enlarge the place of thy tent, and let them stretch forth the curtains of thine habitations:
spare not,
lengthen thy cords, and
strengthen thy stakes;
“
Enlarge the site of your tent, stretch out the curtains of your dwellings, do
not hold back.
Lengthen your ropes and drive your stakes in deep.
Fear
not; for thou shalt
not be
ashamed: neither be thou confounded; for thou shalt
not be put to shame: for thou shalt
forget the shame of thy youth, and shalt
not remember the reproach of thy
widowhood any more.
Do
not be afraid, for you will
not be put to shame; do
not be
intimidated, for you will
not be
humiliated. For you will
forget the shame of your youth and will remember no more the reproach of your
widowhood.
For this is as the waters of
Noah unto me: for as I have
sworn that the waters of
Noah should no more go over the earth; so have I
sworn that I would
not be
wroth with thee, nor
rebuke thee.
“For to Me this is like the days of
Noah, when I
swore that the waters of
Noah would never again cover the earth. So I have
sworn that I will
not be
angry with you or
rebuke you.
For the mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed; but my kindness shall not depart from thee, neither shall the covenant of my peace be removed, saith the LORD that hath mercy on thee.
Though the mountains may be removed and the hills may be
shaken, My loving devotion will
not depart from you, and My covenant of peace will
not be broken,” says the LORD, who has
compassion on you.
O thou
afflicted,
tossed with
tempest, and
not comforted, behold, I will lay thy stones with fair colors, and lay thy foundations with sapphires.
In righteousness shalt thou be established: thou shalt be far from oppression; for thou shalt not fear: and from terror; for it shall not come near thee.
In righteousness you will be established, far from oppression, for you will have no fear. Terror will be far removed, for it will not come near you.
Behold, they shall surely gather together, but
not by me:
whosoever shall gather together against thee shall fall for thy sake.
If
anyone attacks you, it is
not from Me;
whoever assails you will fall before you.
Wherefore do ye
spend money for that which is
not bread? and your labour for that which satisfieth
not?
hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness.
Why
spend money on that which is
not bread, and your labor on that which does
not satisfy?
Listen carefully to Me, and eat what is good, and your soul will delight in the richest of foods.
Behold, thou shalt call a nation that thou knowest
not, and nations that knew
not thee shall run unto thee because of the LORD thy God, and for the Holy One of Israel; for he hath
glorified thee.
Surely you will
summon a nation you do
not know, and nations who do
not know you will run to you. For the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, has bestowed glory on you.”
For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD.
“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways,” declares the LORD.
For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth
not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and
bud, that it may give seed to the
sower, and bread to the eater:
For just as rain and snow fall from heaven and do
not return without watering the earth, making it
bud and
sprout, and providing seed to
sow and food to eat,
So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall
not return unto me void, but it shall
accomplish that which I please, and it shall
prosper in the thing
whereto I sent it.
so My word that proceeds from My mouth will
not return to Me empty, but it will
accomplish what I please, and it will
prosper where I send it.
Instead of the
thorn shall come up the
fir tree, and instead of the
brier shall come up the
myrtle tree: and it shall be to the LORD for a name, for an
everlasting sign that shall
not be cut off.
Instead of the thornbush, a
cypress will grow, and instead of the
brier, a
myrtle will spring up; they will make a name for the LORD, an
everlasting sign, never to be destroyed.”
Neither let the son of the stranger, that hath joined himself to the LORD, speak, saying, The LORD hath utterly separated me from his people: neither let the
eunuch say, Behold, I am a dry tree.
Let no foreigner who has joined himself to the LORD say, “The LORD will utterly
exclude me from His people.” And let the
eunuch not say, “I am but a dry tree.”
Even unto them will I give in mine house and within my walls a place and a name better than of sons and of daughters: I will give them an
everlasting name, that shall
not be cut off.
I will give them, in My house and within My walls, a
memorial and a name better than that of sons and daughters. I will give them an
everlasting name that will
not be cut off.
Thou art
wearied in the greatness of thy way; yet saidst thou
not, There is no hope: thou hast found the life of thine hand; therefore thou
wast not grieved.
You are
wearied by your many journeys, but you did
not say, “There is no hope!” You found
renewal of your strength; therefore you did
not grow weak.
And of whom hast thou been afraid or feared, that thou hast
lied, and hast
not remembered me, nor laid it to thy heart? have
not I held my peace even of old, and thou fearest me
not?
Whom have you
dreaded and feared, so that you
lied and failed to remember Me or take this to heart? Is it
not because I have long been silent that you do
not fear Me?
I will declare thy righteousness, and thy works; for they shall not profit thee.
I will
expose your righteousness and your works, and they will
not profit you.
For I will
not contend for ever, neither will I be always
wroth: for the spirit should fail before me, and the souls which I have made.
For I will
not accuse you
forever, nor will I always be
angry; for then the spirit of man would grow weak before Me, with the breath of those I have made.
“Cry
aloud, do
not hold back! Raise your voice like a ram’s horn. Declare to My people their
transgression and to the house of Jacob their sins.
Yet they seek me daily, and delight to know my ways, as a nation that did righteousness, and
forsook not the
ordinance of their God: they ask of me the ordinances of justice; they take delight in approaching to God.
For day after day they seek Me and delight to know My ways, like a nation that does what is right and does
not forsake the justice of their God. They ask Me for righteous judgments; they delight in the nearness of God.”
Wherefore have we fasted, say they, and thou seest
not? wherefore have we
afflicted our soul, and thou takest no knowledge? Behold, in the day of your fast ye find pleasure, and exact all your labours.
“Why have we fasted, and You have
not seen? Why have we humbled ourselves, and You have
not noticed?” “Behold, on the day of your fast, you do as you please, and you
oppress all your workers.
Behold, ye fast for
strife and
debate, and to
smite with the
fist of wickedness: ye shall
not fast as ye do this day, to make your voice to be heard on high.
Is
not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to
undo the heavy burdens, and to let the
oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke?
Isn’t this the fast that I have chosen: to break the chains of wickedness, to
untie the cords of the yoke, to set the
oppressed free and
tear off every yoke?
Is it
not to deal thy bread to the
hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide
not thyself from thine own flesh?
Isn’t it to share your bread with the
hungry, to bring the poor and homeless into your home, to
clothe the naked when you see him, and
not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?
