And the LORD shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in
drought, and make fat thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail
not.
The LORD will always guide you; He will satisfy you in a sun-
scorched land and
strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail.
If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the LORD, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words:
If you turn your foot from breaking the Sabbath, from doing as you please on My holy day, if you call the Sabbath a delight, and the LORD’s holy day honorable, if you honor it by not going your own way or seeking your own pleasure or speaking idle words,
Behold, the LORD’S hand is
not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear:
Surely the arm of the LORD is not too short to save, nor His ear too dull to hear.
But your
iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have
hid his face from you, that he will
not hear.
But your
iniquities have built barriers between you and your God, and your sins have hidden His face from you, so that He does
not hear.
Their webs shall not become garments, neither shall they cover themselves with their works: their works are works of iniquity, and the act of violence is in their hands.
Their cobwebs cannot be made into clothing, and they cannot cover themselves with their works. Their deeds are sinful deeds, and acts of violence are in their hands.
The way of peace they know
not; and there is no judgment in their goings: they have made them
crooked paths:
whosoever goeth therein shall
not know peace.
The way of peace they have
not known, and there is no justice in their tracks. They have turned them into
crooked paths; no one who treads on them will know peace.
Therefore is judgment far from us, neither
doth justice overtake us: we wait for light, but behold obscurity; for brightness, but we walk in darkness.
Therefore justice is far from us, and righteousness does
not reach us. We hope for light, but there is darkness; for brightness, but we walk in
gloom.
As for me, this is my covenant with them, saith the LORD; My spirit that is upon thee, and my words which I have put in thy mouth, shall not depart out of thy mouth, nor out of the mouth of thy seed, nor out of the mouth of thy seed’s seed, saith the LORD, from henceforth and for ever.
“As for Me, this is My covenant with them,” says the LORD. “My Spirit will not depart from you, and My words that I have put in your mouth will not depart from your mouth or from the mouths of your children and grandchildren, from now on and forevermore,” says the LORD.
Therefore thy gates shall be open continually; they shall not be shut day nor night; that men may bring unto thee the forces of the Gentiles, and that their kings may be brought.
Your gates will always stand open; they will never be shut, day or night, so that the wealth of the nations may be brought into you, with their kings being led in
procession.
For the nation and kingdom that will
not serve thee shall perish;
yea, those nations shall be utterly wasted.
For the nation or kingdom that will not serve you will perish; it will be utterly destroyed.
Thy sun shall no more go down; neither shall thy moon withdraw itself: for the LORD shall be thine
everlasting light, and the days of thy
mourning shall be ended.
Your sun will no longer set, and your moon will
not wane; for the LORD will be your
everlasting light, and the days of your sorrow will cease.
For
Zion’s sake will I
not hold my peace, and for Jerusalem’s sake I will
not rest, until the righteousness thereof go forth as brightness, and the salvation thereof as a lamp that burneth.
For
Zion’s sake I will
not keep silent, and for Jerusalem’s sake I will
not keep still, until her righteousness shines like a bright light, her salvation like a
blazing torch.
I have set
watchmen upon thy walls, O Jerusalem, which shall never hold their peace day nor night: ye that make mention of the LORD, keep
not silence,
On your walls, O Jerusalem, I have posted
watchmen; they will never be silent day or night. You who call on the LORD shall take no rest for
yourselves,
The LORD hath
sworn by his right hand, and by the arm of his strength, Surely I will no more give thy corn to be meat for thine enemies; and the sons of the stranger shall
not drink thy wine, for the which thou hast laboured:
The LORD has
sworn by His right hand and by His mighty arm: “Never again will I give your grain to your enemies for food, nor will foreigners drink the new wine for which you have
toiled.
And they shall call them, The holy people, The redeemed of the LORD: and thou shalt be called, Sought out, A city
not forsaken.
And they will be called the Holy People, the Redeemed of The LORD; and you will be called Sought Out, A City
Not Forsaken.
For he said, Surely they are my people, children that will not lie: so he was their Saviour.
For He said, “They are surely My people, sons who will
not be
disloyal.” So He became their
Savior.
That led them through the deep, as an horse in the wilderness, that they should
not stumble?
who led them through the depths like a horse in the wilderness, so that they did
not stumble?
Doubtless thou art our father, though Abraham be ignorant of us, and Israel acknowledge us
not: thou, O LORD, art our father, our
redeemer; thy name is from
everlasting.
Yet You are our Father, though Abraham does
not know us and Israel does
not acknowledge us. You, O LORD, are our Father; our
Redeemer from
Everlasting is Your name.
We are thine: thou never barest rule over them; they were not called by thy name.
We have become like those You never ruled, like those not called by Your name.
When thou
didst terrible things which we looked
not for, thou camest down, the mountains flowed down at thy presence.
When You did
awesome works that we did
not expect, You came down, and the mountains
trembled at Your presence.
For since the beginning of the world men have not heard, nor perceived by the ear, neither hath the eye seen, O God, beside thee, what he hath prepared for him that waiteth for him.
From ancient times no one has heard, no ear has perceived, no eye has seen any God besides You, who acts on behalf of those who wait for Him.
Be
not wroth very
sore, O LORD, neither remember iniquity for ever: behold, see, we
beseech thee, we are all thy people.
Do
not be
angry, O LORD, beyond measure; do
not remember our iniquity
forever. Oh, look upon us, we pray; we are all Your people!
I am sought of them that asked not for me; I am found of them that sought me not: I said, Behold me, behold me, unto a nation that was not called by my name.
“I revealed Myself to those who did not ask for Me; I was found by those who did not seek Me. To a nation that did not call My name, I said, ‘Here I am! Here I am!’
I have spread out my hands all the day unto a
rebellious people, which walketh in a way that was
not good, after their own thoughts;
All day long I have held out My hands to an
obstinate people who walk in the wrong path, who follow their own imaginations,
Which say, Stand by
thyself, come
not near to me; for I am holier than thou. These are a smoke in my nose, a fire that burneth all the day.
They say, ‘Keep to
yourself; do
not come near me, for I am holier than you!’ Such people are smoke in My nostrils, a fire that burns all day long.
Behold, it is written before Me: I will not keep silent, but I will repay; I will pay it back into their laps,
Thus saith the LORD, As the new wine is found in the
cluster, and one saith, Destroy it
not; for a blessing is in it: so will I do for my servants’ sakes, that I may
not destroy them all.
This is what the LORD says: “As the new wine is found in a
cluster of grapes, and men say, ‘Do
not destroy it, for it contains a blessing,’ so I will act on behalf of My servants; I will
not destroy them all.
Therefore will I number you to the sword, and ye shall all bow down to the slaughter: because when I called, ye did not answer; when I spake, ye did not hear; but did evil before mine eyes, and did choose that wherein I delighted not.
I will
destine you for the sword, and you will all
kneel down to be slaughtered, because I called and you did
not answer, I spoke and you did
not listen; you did evil in My sight and chose that in which I did
not delight.”
For, behold, I
create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall
not be remembered, nor come into mind.
For behold, I will
create new heavens and a new earth. The former things will
not be remembered, nor will they come to mind.
There shall be no more thence an infant of days, nor an old man that hath
not filled his days: for the child shall die an hundred years old; but the
sinner being an hundred years old shall be
accursed.
No longer will a
nursing infant live but a few days, or an old man fail to live out his years. For the youth will die at a hundred years, and he who fails to reach a hundred will be considered
accursed.
They shall
not build, and another inhabit; they shall
not plant, and another eat: for as the days of a tree are the days of my people, and mine
elect shall long enjoy the work of their hands.
No longer will they build houses for others to inhabit, nor plant for others to eat. For as is the lifetime of a tree, so will be the days of My people, and My chosen ones will fully enjoy the work of their hands.
They shall not labour in vain, nor bring forth for trouble; for they are the seed of the blessed of the LORD, and their offspring with them.
They will
not labor in vain or bear children
doomed to
disaster; for they will be a people blessed by the LORD— they and their descendants with them.
The wolf and the lamb shall feed together, and the lion shall eat straw like the
bullock: and dust shall be the serpent’s meat. They shall
not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain, saith the LORD.
The wolf and the lamb will feed together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox, but the food of the serpent will be dust. They will neither
harm nor destroy on all My holy mountain,” says the LORD.
For all those things hath mine hand made, and all those things have been, saith the LORD: but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a
contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word.
Has
not My hand made all these things? And so they came into being,” declares the LORD. “This is the one I will esteem: he who is humble and
contrite in spirit, who trembles at My word.
I also will choose their delusions, and will bring their fears upon them; because when I called, none did answer; when I spake, they did not hear: but they did evil before mine eyes, and chose that in which I delighted not.
So I will choose their punishment and I will bring terror upon them, because I called and no one answered, I spoke and no one
listened. But they did evil in My sight and chose that in which I did
not delight.”
Shall I bring to the birth, and
not cause to bring forth? saith the LORD: shall I cause to bring forth, and shut the
womb? saith thy God.
Shall I bring a
baby to the point of birth and
not deliver it?” says the LORD. “Or will I who deliver close the
womb?” says your God.
And I will set a sign among them, and I will send those that escape of them unto the nations, to
Tarshish,
Pul, and Lud, that draw the bow, to
Tubal, and
Javan, to the isles
afar off, that have
not heard my fame, neither have seen my glory; and they shall declare my glory among the Gentiles.
I will establish a sign among them, and I will send survivors from among them to the nations—to
Tarshish, Put, and the archers of Lud; to
Tubal,
Javan, and the islands far away who have
not heard of My fame or seen My glory. So they will
proclaim My glory among the nations.
And they shall go forth, and look upon the carcases of the men that have
transgressed against me: for their worm shall
not die, neither shall their fire be
quenched; and they shall be an
abhorring unto all flesh.
“As they go forth, they will see the corpses of the men who have rebelled against Me; for their worm will never die, their fire will never be
quenched, and they will be a
horror to all mankind.”
Then said I,
Ah, Lord GOD! behold, I cannot speak: for I am a child.
“
Ah, Lord GOD,” I said, “I surely do
not know how to speak, for I am only a child!”
But the LORD said unto me, Say
not, I am a child: for thou shalt go to all that I shall send thee, and
whatsoever I command thee thou shalt speak.
But the LORD told me: “Do
not say, ‘I am only a child.’ For to
everyone I send you, you must go, and all that I command you, you must speak.
Be not afraid of their faces: for I am with thee to deliver thee, saith the LORD.
Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you to deliver you,” declares the LORD.
Thou therefore
gird up thy loins, and arise, and speak unto them all that I command thee: be
not dismayed at their faces, lest I
confound thee before them.
Get
yourself ready. Stand up and tell them everything that I command you. Do
not be
intimidated by them, or I will
terrify you before them.
And they shall fight against thee; but they shall not prevail against thee; for I am with thee, saith the LORD, to deliver thee.
They will fight against you but will never overcome you, since I am with you to deliver you,” declares the LORD.
Go and cry in the ears of Jerusalem, saying, Thus saith the LORD; I remember thee, the kindness of thy youth, the love of thine
espousals, when thou wentest after me in the wilderness, in a land that was
not sown.
“Go and
proclaim in the hearing of Jerusalem that this is what the LORD says: ‘I remember the devotion of your youth, your love as a
bride, how you followed Me in the wilderness, in a land
not sown.
Neither said they, Where is the LORD that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, that led us through the wilderness, through a land of deserts and of pits, through a land of
drought, and of the shadow of death, through a land that no man passed through, and where no man dwelt?
They did
not ask, ‘Where is the LORD who brought us up from the land of Egypt, who led us through the wilderness, through a land of deserts and pits, a land of
drought and darkness, a land where no one travels and no one lives?’
The priests said
not, Where is the LORD? and they that handle the law knew me
not: the pastors also
transgressed against me, and the prophets
prophesied by
Baal, and walked after things that do
not profit.
The priests did
not ask, ‘Where is the LORD?’ The experts in the law no longer knew Me, and the leaders rebelled against Me. The prophets
prophesied by
Baal and followed useless idols.
Hath a nation changed their gods, which are yet no gods? but my people have changed their glory for that which
doth not profit.
Has a nation ever changed its gods, though they are no gods at all? Yet My people have exchanged their Glory for useless idols.
Hast thou
not procured this unto
thyself, in that thou hast
forsaken the LORD thy God, when he led thee by the way?
Have you
not brought this on
yourself by
forsaking the LORD your God when He led you in the way?
Thine own wickedness shall correct thee, and thy backslidings shall reprove thee: know therefore and see that it is an evil thing and bitter, that thou hast
forsaken the LORD thy God, and that my fear is
not in thee, saith the Lord GOD of hosts.
Your own evil will discipline you; your own
apostasies will
reprimand you. Consider and
realize how evil and bitter it is for you to
forsake the LORD your God and to have no fear of Me,” declares the Lord GOD of Hosts.
For of old time I have broken thy yoke, and
burst thy bands; and thou saidst, I will
not transgress; when upon every high hill and under every green tree thou wanderest, playing the
harlot.
“For long ago you broke your yoke and
tore off your chains, saying, ‘I will
not serve!’ Indeed, on every high hill and under every green tree you lay down as a
prostitute.
How canst thou say, I am
not polluted, I have
not gone after
Baalim? see thy way in the valley, know what thou hast done: thou art a swift
dromedary traversing her ways;
“How can you say, ‘I am
not defiled; I have
not run after the Baals’? Look at your
behavior in the valley; acknowledge what you have done. You are a swift young she-
camel galloping here and there,
A wild
ass used to the wilderness, that snuffeth up the wind at her pleasure; in her occasion who can turn her away? all they that seek her will
not weary themselves; in her month they shall find her.
a wild
donkey at home in the wilderness,
sniffing the wind in the heat of her desire. Who can restrain her passion? All who seek her need
not weary themselves; in mating season they will find her.
Saying to a stock, Thou art my father; and to a stone, Thou hast brought me forth: for they have turned their back unto me, and not their face: but in the time of their trouble they will say, Arise, and save us.
say to a tree, ‘You are my father,’ and to a stone, ‘You gave me birth.’ For they have turned their backs to Me and
not their faces, yet in the time of trouble they
beg, ‘Rise up and save us!’
Also in thy skirts is found the blood of the souls of the poor innocents: I have not found it by secret search, but upon all these.
Moreover, your skirts are
stained with the blood of the innocent poor, though you did
not find them breaking in. But in spite of all these things
Yet thou sayest, Because I am innocent, surely his anger shall turn from me. Behold, I will
plead with thee, because thou sayest, I have
not sinned.
you say, ‘I am innocent. Surely His anger will turn from me.’ Behold, I will judge you, because you say, ‘I have
not sinned.’
Yea, thou shalt go forth from him, and thine hands upon thine head: for the LORD hath rejected thy confidences, and thou shalt
not prosper in them.
Moreover, you will leave that place with your hands on your head, for the LORD has rejected those you trust; you will
not prosper by their help.”
They say, If a man put away his wife, and she go from him, and become another man’s, shall he return unto her again? shall
not that land be greatly
polluted? but thou hast played the
harlot with many lovers; yet return again to me, saith the LORD.
“If a man divorces his wife and she leaves him to marry another, can he ever return to her? Would
not such a land be completely
defiled? But you have played the
harlot with many lovers— and you would return to Me?” declares the LORD.
Lift up thine eyes unto the high places, and see where thou hast
not been
lien with. In the ways hast thou sat for them, as the Arabian in the wilderness; and thou hast
polluted the land with thy whoredoms and with thy wickedness.
“Lift up your eyes to the barren heights and see. Is there any place where you have
not been
violated? You sat beside the
highways waiting for your lovers, like a
nomad in the desert. You have
defiled the land with your
prostitution and wickedness.
Wilt thou
not from this time cry unto me, My father, thou art the guide of my youth?
Have you not just called to Me, ‘My Father, You are my friend from youth.
And I said after she had done all these things, Turn thou unto me. But she returned
not. And her
treacherous sister Judah saw it.
I thought that after she had done all these things, she would return to Me. But she did not return, and her unfaithful sister Judah saw it.
And I saw, when for all the causes whereby
backsliding Israel committed
adultery I had put her away, and given her a bill of
divorce; yet her
treacherous sister Judah feared
not, but went and played the
harlot also.
She saw that because faithless Israel had committed
adultery, I gave her a
certificate of
divorce and sent her away. Yet that unfaithful sister Judah had no fear and
prostituted herself as well.
And yet for all this her
treacherous sister Judah hath
not turned unto me with her whole heart, but
feignedly, saith the LORD.
Yet in spite of all this, her unfaithful sister Judah did not return to Me with all her heart, but only in pretense,” declares the LORD.
Go and
proclaim these words toward the north, and say, Return, thou
backsliding Israel, saith the LORD; and I will
not cause mine anger to fall upon you: for I am
merciful, saith the LORD, and I will
not keep anger for ever.
Go,
proclaim this message toward the north: ‘Return, O faithless Israel,’ declares the LORD. ‘I will no longer look on you with anger, for I am
merciful,’ declares the LORD. ‘I will
not be
angry forever.
Only acknowledge thine iniquity, that thou hast
transgressed against the LORD thy God, and hast scattered thy ways to the strangers under every green tree, and ye have
not obeyed my voice, saith the LORD.
Only acknowledge your guilt, that you have rebelled against the LORD your God. You have scattered your favors to foreign gods under every green tree and have not obeyed My voice,’” declares the LORD.
But I said, How shall I put thee among the children, and give thee a pleasant land, a goodly
heritage of the hosts of nations? and I said, Thou shalt call me, My father; and shalt
not turn away from me.
Then I said, ‘How I long to make you My sons and give you a desirable land, the most beautiful inheritance of all the nations!’ I thought you would call Me ‘Father’ and never turn away from following Me.
We lie down in our shame, and our confusion covereth us: for we have
sinned against the LORD our God, we and our fathers, from our youth even unto this day, and have
not obeyed the voice of the LORD our God.
Let us lie down in our shame; let our disgrace cover us. We have
sinned against the LORD our God, both we and our fathers; from our youth even to this day we have
not obeyed the voice of the LORD our God.”
If thou
wilt return, O Israel, saith the LORD, return unto me: and if thou
wilt put away thine abominations out of my sight, then shalt thou
not remove.
“If you will return, O Israel, return to Me,” declares the LORD. “If you will remove your
detestable idols from My sight and no longer waver,
For thus saith the LORD to the men of Judah and Jerusalem, Break up your
fallow ground, and
sow not among thorns.
For this is what the LORD says to the men of Judah and Jerusalem: “Break up your
unplowed ground, and do
not sow among the thorns.
Set up the standard toward
Zion: retire, stay
not: for I will bring evil from the north, and a great destruction.
Raise a signal flag toward
Zion. Seek refuge! Do
not delay! For I am bringing
disaster from the north, and terrible destruction.
So put on
sackcloth,
mourn and
wail, for the fierce anger of the LORD has
not turned away from us.”
At that time shall it be said to this people and to Jerusalem, A dry wind of the high places in the wilderness toward the daughter of my people,
not to
fan, nor to
cleanse,
At that time it will be said to this people and to Jerusalem, “A
searing wind from the barren heights in the desert blows toward the daughter of My people, but
not to
winnow or to
sift;
For my people is
foolish, they have
not known me; they are
sottish children, and they have none understanding: they are wise to do evil, but to do good they have no knowledge.
“For My people are fools; they have
not known Me. They are
foolish children, without understanding. They are skilled in doing evil, but they know
not how to do good.”
For thus hath the LORD said, The whole land shall be
desolate; yet will I
not make a full end.
For this is what the LORD says: “The whole land will be
desolate, but I will
not finish its destruction.
For this shall the earth
mourn, and the heavens above be black: because I have spoken it, I have purposed it, and will
not repent, neither will I turn back from it.
Therefore the earth will
mourn and the heavens above will grow dark. I have spoken, I have
planned, and I will
not relent or turn back.”
The whole city shall
flee for the noise of the
horsemen and
bowmen; they shall go into thickets, and
climb up upon the rocks: every city shall be
forsaken, and
not a man dwell therein.
Every city flees at the sound of the
horseman and archer. They enter the thickets and
climb among the rocks. Every city is abandoned; no inhabitant is left.
Run ye to and
fro through the streets of Jerusalem, and see now, and know, and seek in the broad places thereof, if ye can find a man, if there be any that executeth judgment, that seeketh the truth; and I will
pardon it.
“Go up and down the streets of Jerusalem. Look now and take
note; search her squares. If you can find a single person,
anyone who acts justly,
anyone who seeks the truth, then I will
forgive the city.
O LORD, are
not thine eyes upon the truth? thou hast
stricken them, but they have
not grieved; thou hast consumed them, but they have refused to receive correction: they have made their faces harder than a rock; they have refused to return.
O LORD, do
not Your eyes look for truth? You struck them, but they felt no pain. You finished them off, but they refused to accept discipline. They have made their faces harder than stone and refused to
repent.
Therefore I said, Surely these are poor; they are
foolish: for they know
not the way of the LORD, nor the judgment of their God.
Then I said, “They are only the poor; they have played the
fool, for they do
not know the way of the LORD, the justice of their God.
How shall I
pardon thee for this? thy children have
forsaken me, and
sworn by them that are no gods: when I had fed them to the full, they then committed
adultery, and assembled themselves by troops in the harlots’ houses.
“Why should I
forgive you? Your children have
forsaken Me and
sworn by gods that are
not gods. I satisfied their needs, yet they committed
adultery and assembled at the houses of prostitutes.
Shall I
not visit for these things? saith the LORD: and shall
not my soul be
avenged on such a nation as this?
Should I
not punish them for these things?” declares the LORD. “Should I
not avenge Myself on such a nation as this?
Go ye up upon her walls, and destroy; but make not a full end: take away her battlements; for they are not the LORD’S.
Go up through her vineyards and
ravage them, but do
not finish them off. Strip off her branches, for they do
not belong to the LORD.
They have
belied the LORD, and said, It is
not he; neither shall evil come upon us; neither shall we see sword nor famine:
They have
lied about the LORD and said: “He will
not do anything;
harm will
not come to us; we will
not see sword or famine.
And the prophets shall become wind, and the word is not in them: thus shall it be done unto them.
The prophets are but wind, for the word is
not in them. So let their own predictions
befall them.”
Lo, I will bring a nation upon you from far, O house of Israel, saith the LORD: it is a mighty nation, it is an ancient nation, a nation whose language thou knowest not, neither understandest what they say.
Behold, I am bringing a distant nation against you, O house of Israel,” declares the LORD. “It is an established nation, an ancient nation, a nation whose language you do not know and whose speech you do not understand.
Nevertheless in those days, saith the LORD, I will not make a full end with you.
“Yet even in those days,” declares the LORD, “I will not make a full end of you.
And it shall come to pass, when ye shall say, Wherefore doeth the LORD our God all these things unto us? then shalt thou answer them, Like as ye have
forsaken me, and served strange gods in your land, so shall ye serve strangers in a land that is
not yours.
And when the people ask, ‘For what
offense has the LORD our God done all these things to us?’ You are to tell them, ‘Just as you have
forsaken Me and served foreign gods in your land, so will you serve foreigners in a land that is
not your own.’”
Hear now this, O
foolish people, and without understanding; which have eyes, and see
not; which have ears, and hear
not:
“Hear this, O
foolish and senseless people, who have eyes but do
not see, who have ears but do
not hear.
Fear ye
not me? saith the LORD: will ye
not tremble at my presence, which have placed the sand for the bound of the sea by a perpetual decree, that it cannot pass it: and though the waves thereof
toss themselves, yet can they
not prevail; though they
roar, yet can they
not pass over it?
Do you
not fear Me?” declares the LORD. “Do you
not tremble before Me, the One who set the sand as the boundary for the sea, an
enduring barrier it cannot cross? The waves
surge, but they cannot prevail. They
roar but cannot cross it.
Neither say they in their heart, Let us now fear the LORD our God, that giveth rain, both the former and the latter, in his season: he reserveth unto us the appointed weeks of the harvest.
They have not said in their hearts, ‘Let us fear the LORD our God, who gives the rains, both autumn and spring, in season, who keeps for us the appointed weeks of harvest.’
They are
waxen fat, they
shine:
yea, they overpass the deeds of the wicked: they judge
not the cause, the cause of the fatherless, yet they
prosper; and the right of the
needy do they
not judge.
They have grown fat and
sleek, and have
excelled in the deeds of the wicked. They have
not taken up the cause of the fatherless, that they might
prosper; nor have they defended the rights of the
needy.
Shall I
not visit for these things? saith the LORD: shall
not my soul be
avenged on such a nation as this?
Should I
not punish them for these things?” declares the LORD. “Should I
not avenge Myself on such a nation as this?
For thus hath the LORD of hosts said,
Hew ye down trees, and cast a mount against Jerusalem: this is the city to be visited; she is wholly oppression in the midst of her.
For this is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Cut down the trees and raise a siege
ramp against Jerusalem. This city must be punished; there is
nothing but oppression in her midst.
Be thou
instructed, O Jerusalem, lest my soul depart from thee; lest I make thee
desolate, a land
not inhabited.
Be
forewarned, O Jerusalem, or I will turn away from you; I will make you a
desolation, a land without inhabitant.”
Were they
ashamed when they had committed
abomination?
nay, they were
not at all
ashamed, neither could they
blush: therefore they shall fall among them that fall: at the time that I visit them they shall be cast down, saith the LORD.
Are they
ashamed of the
abomination they have committed? No, they have no shame at all; they do
not even know how to
blush. So they will fall among the fallen; when I
punish them, they will
collapse,” says the LORD.
Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein.
This is what the LORD says: “Stand at the crossroads and look. Ask for the ancient paths: ‘Where is the good way?’ Then walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls. But they said, ‘We will not walk in it!’
I appointed
watchmen over you and said, ‘
Listen for the sound of the ram’s horn.’ But they answered, ‘We will
not listen!’
Hear, O earth: behold, I will bring evil upon this people, even the fruit of their thoughts, because they have

Hear, O earth! I am bringing
disaster on this people, the fruit of their own schemes, because they have paid no attention to My word and have rejected My instruction.
To what purpose cometh there to me incense from
Sheba, and the sweet cane from a far country? your burnt offerings are
not acceptable, nor your sacrifices sweet unto me.
What use to Me is
frankincense from
Sheba or sweet cane from a distant land? Your burnt offerings are
not acceptable; your sacrifices do
not please Me.”
Go not forth into the field, nor walk by the way; for the sword of the enemy and fear is on every side.
Do not go out to the fields; do not walk the road. For the enemy has a sword; terror is on every side.
The
bellows are burned, the lead is consumed of the fire; the founder melteth in vain: for the wicked are
not plucked away.
The
bellows blow fiercely, blasting away the lead with fire. The refining proceeds in vain, for the wicked are
not purged.
