It came even to pass, as the trumpeters and singers were as one, to make one sound to be heard in praising and

But will God in very deed dwell with men on the earth? behold, heaven and the heaven of heavens cannot contain thee; how much less this house which I have built!
But will God indeed dwell with man upon the earth? Even heaven, the highest heaven, cannot contain You, much less this temple I have built.
That thine eyes may be open upon this house day and night, upon the place
whereof thou hast said that thou wouldest put thy name there; to
hearken unto the prayer which thy servant prayeth toward this place.
May Your eyes be open toward this temple day and night, toward the place where You said You would put Your Name, so that You may hear the prayer that Your servant prays toward this place.
If a man sin against his neighbour, and an oath be laid upon him to make him
swear, and the oath come before thine altar in this house;
When a man sins against his
neighbor and is required to take an oath, and he comes to take an oath before Your altar in this
temple,
And if thy people Israel be put to the worse before the enemy, because they have
sinned against thee; and shall return and
confess thy name, and pray and make
supplication before thee in this house;
When Your people Israel are defeated before an enemy because they have
sinned against You, and they return to You and
confess Your name, praying and
pleading before You in this
temple,
Then what prayer or what
supplication soever shall be made of any man, or of all thy people Israel, when every one shall know his own
sore and his own grief, and shall spread forth his hands in this house:
then may whatever prayer or petition Your people Israel make—each knowing his own afflictions and spreading out his hands toward this temple—
Moreover concerning the stranger, which is not of thy people Israel, but is come from a far country for thy great name’s sake, and thy mighty hand, and thy stretched out arm; if they come and pray in this house;
And as for the foreigner who is not of Your people Israel but has come from a distant land because of Your great name and Your mighty hand and outstretched arm—when he comes and prays toward this temple,

For now have I chosen and
sanctified this house, that my name may be there for ever: and mine eyes and mine heart shall be there perpetually.
For I have now chosen and consecrated this
temple so that My Name may be there
forever. My eyes and My heart will be there for all time.
Then will I
pluck them up by the roots out of my land which I have given them; and this house, which I have
sanctified for my name, will I cast out of my sight, and will make it to be a
proverb and a
byword among all nations.
then I will
uproot Israel from the soil I have given them, and I will
banish from My presence this
temple I have
sanctified for My Name. I will make it an object of
scorn and
ridicule among all the peoples.
And this house, which is high, shall be an
astonishment to every one that passeth by it; so that he shall say, Why hath the LORD done thus unto this land, and unto this house?

temple has become a
heap of
rubble, all who pass by it will be
appalled and say, ‘Why has the LORD done such a thing to this land and to this
temple?’

Asa heard these words, and the prophecy of
Oded the prophet, he took courage, and put away the
abominable idols out of all the land of Judah and Benjamin, and out of the cities which he had taken from mount Ephraim, and renewed the altar of the LORD, that was before the
porch of the LORD.
When
Asa heard these words and the prophecy of
Azariah son of
Oded the prophet, he took courage and removed the

If, when evil cometh upon us, as the sword, judgment, or
pestilence, or famine, we stand before this house, and in thy presence, (for thy name is in this house,) and cry unto thee in our
affliction, then thou
wilt hear and help.
‘If
disaster comes upon us—whether sword or judgment, plague or famine—we will stand before this
temple and before You, for Your Name is in this
temple. We will cry out to You in our distress, and You will hear us and save us.’
And the Levites shall compass the king round about, every man with his weapons in his hand; and
whosoever else cometh into the house, he shall be put to death: but be ye with the king when he cometh in, and when he goeth out.
The Levites must
surround the king with weapons in hand, and
anyone who enters the
temple must be put to death. You must stay close to the king wherever he goes.”

howbeit he entered not into the

temple of the LORD. But the people still

cleanse it, and brought out all the uncleanness that they found in the

brook Kidron.

bowels slew him there with the sword.
and the LORD sent an angel who

valor and every leader and commander in the camp of the king of Assyria. So he withdrew to his own land in disgrace. And when he entered the
temple of his god, some of his own sons struck him down with the sword.
And he set a carved image, the
idol which he had made, in the house of God, of which God had said to David and to Solomon his son, In this house, and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen before all the tribes of Israel, will I put my name for ever:
Manasseh even took the carved image he had made and set it up in the house of God, of which God had said to David and his son Solomon, “In this

Nebuchadnezzar had brought forth out of Jerusalem, and had put them in the house of his gods;
King Cyrus also brought out the articles belonging to the house of the LORD that
Nebuchadnezzar had carried away from Jerusalem and placed in the

And when the builders laid the foundation of the
temple of the LORD, they set the priests in their
apparel with
trumpets, and the Levites the sons of
Asaph with cymbals, to praise the LORD, after the
ordinance of David king of Israel.

temple of the LORD, the priests in their

Now when the
adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the children of the captivity builded the
temple unto the LORD God of Israel;
When the enemies of Judah and Benjamin heard that the exiles were building a temple for the LORD, the God of Israel,
At the same time came to them Tatnai, governor on this side the river, and Shethar-boznai, and their companions, and said thus unto them, Who hath commanded you to build this house, and to make up this wall?
At that time Tattenai the governor of the region west of the Euphrates, Shethar-bozenai, and their associates went to the Jews and asked, “Who authorized you to rebuild this temple and restore this structure?”
Then asked we those elders, and said unto them thus, Who commanded you to build this house, and to make up these walls?
So we questioned the elders and asked, “Who authorized you to rebuild this temple and restore this structure?”
And thus they returned us answer, saying, We are the servants of the God of heaven and earth, and build the house that was builded these many years ago, which a great king of Israel builded and set up.
And this is the answer they returned: “We are servants of the God of heaven and earth, and we are rebuilding the temple that was built many years ago, which a great king of Israel built and completed.
But after that our fathers had
provoked the God of heaven unto wrath, he gave them into the hand of
Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, the
Chaldean, who destroyed this house, and carried the people away into Babylon.
But since our fathers angered the God of heaven, He delivered them into the hand of
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, the
Chaldean who destroyed this
temple and carried away the people to Babylon.
And the vessels also of gold and silver of the house of God, which
Nebuchadnezzar took out of the
temple that was in Jerusalem, and brought them into the
temple of Babylon, those did Cyrus the king take out of the
temple of Babylon, and they were delivered unto one, whose name was Sheshbazzar, whom he had made governor;
He also removed from the
temple of Babylon the gold and silver articles belonging to the house of God, which
Nebuchadnezzar had taken and carried there from the
temple in Jerusalem. King Cyrus gave these articles to a man named Sheshbazzar, whom he appointed governor
And said unto him, Take these vessels, go, carry them into the temple that is in Jerusalem, and let the house of God be builded in his place.
and
instructed, ‘Take these articles, put them in the
temple in Jerusalem, and let the house of God be rebuilt on its original site.’
And also let the golden and silver vessels of the house of God, which
Nebuchadnezzar took forth out of the
temple which is at Jerusalem, and brought unto Babylon, be restored, and brought again unto the
temple which is at Jerusalem, every one to his place, and place them in the house of God.
Furthermore, the gold and silver articles of the house of God, which
Nebuchadnezzar took from the
temple in Jerusalem and carried to Babylon, must also be returned to the
temple in Jerusalem and deposited in the house of God.

Iddo the chief at the place Casiphia, and I told them what they should say unto
Iddo, and to his brethren the
Nethinims, at the place Casiphia, that they should bring unto us ministers for the house of our God.
And I sent them to
Iddo, the leader at Casiphia, with a message for him and his
kinsmen, the
temple servants at Casiphia, that they should bring to us ministers for the house of our God.

And a letter unto
Asaph the keeper of the king’s forest, that he may give me timber to make beams for the gates of the palace which
appertained to the house, and for the wall of the city, and for the house that I shall enter into. And the king granted me, according to the good hand of my God upon me.
And may I have a letter to
Asaph, keeper of the king’s forest, so that he will give me timber to make beams for the gates of the citadel to the
temple, for the city wall, and for the house I will occupy.” And because the
gracious hand of my God was upon me, the king granted my requests.

After him repaired Malchiah the

Afterward I came unto the house of Shemaiah the son of Delaiah the son of Mehetabeel, who was shut up; and he said, Let us meet together in the house of God, within the
temple, and let us shut the doors of the
temple: for they will come to
slay thee;
yea, in the night will they come to
slay thee.
Later, I went to the house of Shemaiah son of Delaiah, the son of Mehetabel, who was confined to his house. He said: “Let us meet at the house of God inside the temple. Let us shut the temple doors because they are coming to kill you— by night they are coming to kill you!”
And I said, Should such a man as I
flee? and who is there, that, being as I am, would go into the
temple to save his life? I will not go in.
But I replied, “Should a man like me run away? Should one like me go into the temple to save his own life? I will not go!”

The temple servants and descendants of the servants of Solomon numbered 392 in all.
So the priests, and the Levites, and the
porters, and the singers, and some of the people, and the
Nethinims, and all Israel, dwelt in their cities; and when the seventh month came, the children of Israel were in their cities.
So the priests, Levites, gatekeepers, singers, and temple servants, along with some of the people and the rest of the Israelites, settled in their own towns. And by the seventh month the Israelites had settled in their towns.
And the rest of the people, the priests, the Levites, the
porters, the singers, the
Nethinims, and all they that had separated themselves from the people of the lands unto the law of God, their wives, their sons, and their daughters, every one having knowledge, and having understanding;

Now these are the chief of the province that dwelt in Jerusalem: but in the cities of Judah dwelt every one in his possession in their cities, to wit, Israel, the priests, and the Levites, and the
Nethinims, and the children of Solomon’s servants.
These are the heads of the provinces who settled in Jerusalem. (In the villages of Judah, however, each lived on his own property in their towns—the Israelites, priests, Levites, temple servants, and descendants of Solomon’s servants—
And their brethren that did the work of the house were eight hundred twenty and two: and Adaiah the son of Jeroham, the son of Pelaliah, the son of Amzi, the son of

temple articles, and the
tithes of grain, new wine, and oil prescribed for the Levites, singers, and gatekeepers, along with the contributions for the priests.
But as for me, I will come into thy house in the multitude of thy mercy: and in thy fear will I worship toward thy holy temple.
But I will enter Your house by the abundance of Your loving devotion; in reverence I will bow down toward Your holy temple.
The LORD is in his holy temple, the LORD’S throne is in heaven: his eyes behold, his eyelids try, the children of men.
The LORD is in His holy temple; the LORD is on His heavenly throne. His eyes are watching closely; they examine the sons of men.
In my distress I called upon the LORD, and
cried unto my God: he heard my voice out of his
temple, and my cry came before him, even into his ears.
In my distress I called upon the LORD; I
cried to my God for help. From His
temple He heard my voice, and my cry for His help reached His ears.
One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to
enquire in his
temple.
One thing I have asked of the LORD; this is what I desire: to dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to
gaze on the beauty of the LORD and seek Him in His
temple.
The voice of the LORD maketh the hinds to
calve, and discovereth the forests: and in his
temple doth every one speak of his glory.
The voice of the LORD twists the oaks and strips the forests bare. And in His temple all cry, “Glory!”
We have thought of thy lovingkindness, O God, in the midst of thy temple.
Within Your
temple, O God, we
contemplate Your loving devotion.
Blessed is the man whom thou choosest, and causest to approach unto thee, that he may dwell in thy courts: we shall be satisfied with the goodness of thy house, even of thy holy temple.
Blessed is the one You choose and bring near to dwell in Your courts! We are filled with the goodness of Your house, the
holiness of Your
temple.
Because of thy temple at Jerusalem shall kings bring presents unto thee.
Because of Your temple at Jerusalem kings will bring You gifts.
O God, the heathen are come into thine inheritance; thy holy
temple have they
defiled; they have laid Jerusalem on heaps.
The nations, O God, have invaded Your inheritance; they have
defiled Your holy
temple and reduced Jerusalem to
rubble.
I will worship toward thy holy
temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou hast
magnified thy word above all thy name.
I bow down toward Your holy
temple and give
thanks to Your name for Your loving devotion and Your faithfulness; You have
exalted Your name and Your word above all else.
Thy lips are like a thread of scarlet, and thy speech is comely: thy
temples are like a piece of a
pomegranate within thy locks.
As a piece of a
pomegranate are thy
temples within thy locks.
In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple.
In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord seated on a throne, high and
exalted; and the train of His
robe filled the
temple.
And the posts of the door moved at the voice of him that
cried, and the house was filled with smoke.
At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds
shook, and the
temple was filled with smoke.
He is gone up to Bajith, and to Dibon, the high places, to
weep: Moab shall
howl over
Nebo, and over Medeba: on all their heads shall be
baldness, and every
beard cut off.
Dibon goes up to its
temple to
weep at its high places. Moab wails over
Nebo, as well as over Medeba. Every head is
shaved, every
beard is cut off.
One day, while he was worshiping in the
temple of his god
Nisroch, his sons
Adrammelech and Sharezer put him to the sword and escaped to the land of
Ararat. And his son Esar-haddon reigned in his place.
That saith of Cyrus, He is my
shepherd, and shall perform all my pleasure: even saying to Jerusalem, Thou shalt be built; and to the
temple, Thy foundation shall be laid.

shepherd will

temple, ‘Let its foundation be laid.’”
Our holy and our beautiful house, where our fathers praised thee, is burned up with fire: and all our pleasant things are laid waste.
Our holy and beautiful
temple, where our fathers praised You, has been burned with fire, and all that was
dear to us lies in ruins.
A voice of noise from the city, a voice from the temple, a voice of the LORD that rendereth recompence to his enemies.
Hear the
uproar from the city;
listen to the voice from the
temple! It is the voice of the LORD, repaying His enemies what they deserve!
Trust ye not in lying words, saying, The temple of the LORD, The temple of the LORD, The temple of the LORD, are these.
Do not trust in
deceptive words,
chanting: ‘This is the
temple of the LORD, the
temple of the LORD, the
temple of the LORD.’
Egypt, and Judah, and
Edom, and the children of
Ammon, and Moab, and all that are in the utmost corners, that dwell in the wilderness: for all these nations are
uncircumcised, and all the house of Israel are
uncircumcised in the heart.
Egypt, Judah,
Edom,
Ammon, Moab, and all the inhabitants of the desert who
clip the hair of their
temples. For all these nations are
uncircumcised, and the whole house of Israel is
uncircumcised in heart.”
The LORD shewed me, and, behold, two baskets of figs were set before the
temple of the LORD, after that Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon had carried away
captive Jeconiah the son of
Jehoiakim king of Judah, and the princes of Judah, with the carpenters and smiths, from Jerusalem, and had brought them to Babylon.
After
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had carried away Jeconiah son of
Jehoiakim king of Judah, as well as the officials of Judah and the
craftsmen and metalsmiths from Jerusalem, and had brought them to Babylon, the LORD showed me two baskets of figs placed in front of the
temple of the LORD.
Micah the Morasthite
prophesied in the days of
Hezekiah king of Judah, and spake to all the people of Judah, saying, Thus saith the LORD of hosts;
Zion shall be
plowed like a field, and Jerusalem shall become heaps, and the mountain of the house as the high places of a forest.
“
Micah the Moreshite
prophesied in the days of
Hezekiah king of Judah and told all the people of Judah that this is what the LORD of Hosts says: ‘
Zion will be
plowed like a field, Jerusalem will become a
heap of
rubble, and the
temple mount a wooded ridge.’
And I will
kindle a fire in the houses of the gods of Egypt; and he shall burn them, and carry them away
captives: and he shall
array himself with the land of Egypt, as a
shepherd putteth on his garment; and he shall go forth from thence in peace.
I will
kindle a fire in the
temples of the gods of Egypt, and
Nebuchadnezzar will burn those
temples and take their gods as
captives. So he will
wrap himself with the land of Egypt as a
shepherd wraps himself in his garment, and he will depart from there unscathed.
He shall break also the images of Beth-shemesh, that is in the land of Egypt; and the houses of the gods of the Egyptians shall he burn with fire.
He will
demolish the sacred pillars of the
temple of the sun in the land of Egypt, and he will burn down the
temples of the gods of Egypt.’”
And their camels shall be a
booty, and the multitude of their cattle a
spoil: and I will
scatter into all winds them that are in the utmost corners; and I will bring their
calamity from all sides thereof, saith the LORD.
Their camels will become
plunder, and their large herds will be
spoil. I will
scatter to the wind in every direction those who
shave their
temples; I will bring
calamity on them from all sides,” declares the LORD.
The voice of them that
flee and escape out of the land of Babylon, to declare in
Zion the
vengeance of the LORD our God, the
vengeance of his
temple.
Listen to the fugitives and refugees from the land of Babylon, declaring in
Zion the
vengeance of the LORD our God, the
vengeance for His
temple.
Make bright the arrows; gather the shields: the LORD hath raised up the spirit of the kings of the Medes: for his
device is against Babylon, to destroy it; because it is the
vengeance of the LORD, the
vengeance of his
temple.
Sharpen the arrows! Fill the quivers! The LORD has
aroused the spirit of the kings of the Medes, because His plan is aimed at Babylon to destroy her, for it is the
vengeance of the LORD—
vengeance for His
temple.
The caldrons also, and the shovels, and the
snuffers, and the
bowls, and the spoons, and all the vessels of brass
wherewith they ministered, took they away.
They also took away the pots, shovels,
wick trimmers,
sprinkling bowls, dishes, and all the articles of bronze used in the
temple service.
How is the gold become
dim! how is the most fine gold changed! the stones of the sanctuary are poured out in the top of every street.
How the gold has become
tarnished, the pure gold has become dull! The
gems of the
temple lie scattered on every street corner.
And he brought me into the inner court of the LORD’S house, and, behold, at the door of the
temple of the LORD, between the
porch and the altar, were about five and twenty men, with their backs toward the
temple of the LORD, and their faces toward the east; and they worshipped the sun toward the east.
So He brought me to the inner court of the house of the LORD, and there at the entrance to the
temple of the LORD, between the
portico and the altar, were about twenty-five men with their backs to the
temple of the LORD and their faces toward the east; and they were bowing to the east in worship of the sun.
And the glory of the God of Israel was gone up from the
cherub,
whereupon he was, to the
threshold of the house. And he called to the man clothed with linen, which had the writer’s
inkhorn by his side;
Then the glory of the God of Israel rose from above the
cherubim, where it had been, and moved to the
threshold of the
temple. And He called to the man clothed in linen who had the writing
kit at his side.
Slay utterly old and young, both maids, and little children, and women: but come not near any man upon whom is the mark; and begin at my sanctuary. Then they began at the ancient men which were before the house.
Slaughter the old men, the young men and maidens, the women and children; but do not go near
anyone who has the mark. Now begin at My sanctuary.” So they began with the elders who were before the
temple.
And he said unto them,
Defile the house, and fill the courts with the slain: go ye forth. And they went forth, and
slew in the city.
Then He told them, “
Defile the
temple and fill the courts with the slain. Go forth!” So they went out and began killing throughout the city.
Now the cherubims stood on the right side of the house, when the man went in; and the cloud filled the inner court.
Now when the man went in, the
cherubim were standing on the south side of the
temple, and a cloud filled the inner court.
