For the zeal of thine house hath eaten me up; and the reproaches of them that reproached thee are fallen upon me.
because zeal for Your house has consumed me, and
the insults of those who
insult You have fallen on me.
They that sit in the gate speak against me; and I was the song of the drunkards.
Those who sit at
the gate
mock me, and I am
the song of drunkards.
But as for me, my prayer is unto thee, O LORD, in an acceptable time: O God, in the multitude of thy mercy hear me, in the truth of thy salvation.
But my prayer to You, O LORD, is for a time of favor. In Your abundant loving devotion, O God, answer me with Your sure salvation.
Deliver me out of
the mire, and let me not sink: let me be delivered from
them that
hate me, and out of
the deep waters.
Rescue me from
the mire and do not let me sink; deliver me from my foes and out of
the deep waters.
Let not
the waterflood overflow me, neither let
the deep
swallow me up, and let not
the pit shut her mouth upon me.
Do not let
the floods
engulf me or
the depths
swallow me up; let not
the Pit close its mouth over me.
Hear me, O LORD; for thy lovingkindness is good: turn unto me according to
the multitude of thy tender
mercies.
Answer me, O LORD, for Your loving devotion is good; turn to me in keeping with Your great
compassion.
Thou hast known my reproach, and my shame, and my dishonour: mine
adversaries are all before
thee.
You know my reproach, my shame and disgrace. All my
adversaries are before You.
Reproach hath broken my heart; and I am full of
heaviness: and I looked for some to take
pity, but
there was none; and for comforters, but I found none.
Insults have broken my heart, and I am in
despair. I looked for sympathy, but
there was none, for comforters, but I found no one.
They gave me also gall for my meat; and in my
thirst they gave me
vinegar to drink.
Let
their table become a
snare before
them: and that which should have been for
their welfare, let it become a
trap.
Let
their eyes be
darkened, that
they see not; and make
their loins continually to
shake.
May
their eyes be
darkened so
they cannot see, and
their backs be bent
forever.
Pour out thine
indignation upon
them, and let thy wrathful anger take hold of
them.
Pour out Your wrath upon them, and let Your burning anger overtake them.
May their place be deserted; let there be no one to dwell in their tents.
For
they persecute him whom thou hast
smitten; and
they talk to
the grief of those whom thou hast wounded.
For
they persecute the one You struck and recount
the pain of those You wounded.
Add iniquity unto their iniquity: and let them not come into thy righteousness.
Add iniquity to their iniquity; let them not share in Your righteousness.
Let
them be
blotted out of
the book of
the living, and not be written with
the righteous.
May
they be
blotted out of
the Book of Life and not listed with
the righteous.
This also shall please
the LORD better than an ox or
bullock that hath horns and
hoofs.
And this will please
the LORD more than an ox, more than a bull with horns and
hooves.
The humble shall see this, and be
glad: and your heart shall live that seek God.
The humble will see and
rejoice. You who seek God, let your hearts be revived!
For the LORD heareth the poor, and despiseth not his prisoners.
Let the heaven and earth praise him, the seas, and every thing that moveth therein.
Let heaven and earth praise Him, the seas and everything that moves in them.
For God will save
Zion, and will build
the cities of Judah: that
they may dwell
there, and have it in possession.
For God will save
Zion and rebuild
the cities of Judah, that
they may dwell
there and possess it.
The seed also of his servants shall
inherit it: and
they that love his name shall dwell
therein.
The descendants of His servants will
inherit it, and those who love His name will settle in it.
Let
them be
ashamed and confounded that seek after my soul: let
them be turned backward, and put to confusion, that desire my
hurt.
Let
them be turned back for a reward of
their shame that say,
Aha,
aha.
May those who say, “
Aha,
aha!” retreat because of
their shame.
Let all those that seek
thee rejoice and be
glad in
thee: and let such as love thy salvation say continually, Let God be
magnified.
May all who seek You
rejoice and be
glad in You; may those who love Your salvation always say, “Let God be
magnified!”
In thee, O LORD, do I put my trust: let me never be put to confusion.
In You, O LORD, I have taken refuge; let me never be put to shame.
Be thou my strong
habitation,
whereunto I may continually resort: thou hast given commandment to save me; for thou art my rock and my fortress.
Be my rock of refuge, where I can always go. Give the command to save me, for You are my rock and my fortress.
Deliver me, O my God, out of the hand of the wicked, out of the hand of the unrighteous and cruel man.
Deliver me, O my God, from
the hand of
the wicked, from
the grasp of
the unjust and
ruthless.
By
thee have I been
holden up from
the womb: thou art he that took me out of my mother’s
bowels: my praise shall be continually of
thee.
I have
leaned on You since birth; You pulled me from my mother’s
womb. My praise is always for You.
Let my mouth be filled with thy praise and with thy honour all the day.
My mouth is filled with Your praise and with Your
splendor all day long.
Cast me not off in
the time of old age;
forsake me not when my strength faileth.
Do not discard me in my old age; do not
forsake me when my strength fails.
For mine enemies speak against me; and they that lay wait for my soul take counsel together,
For my enemies speak against me, and those who lie in wait for my life
conspire,
Saying, God hath
forsaken him:
persecute and take him; for
there is none to deliver him.
saying, “God has
forsaken him; pursue him and seize him, for
there is no one to
rescue him.”
Let
them be confounded and consumed that are
adversaries to my soul; let
them be covered with reproach and dishonour that seek my
hurt.
May
the accusers of my soul be
ashamed and consumed; may those who seek my
harm be covered with
scorn and disgrace.
But I will hope continually, and will yet praise thee more and more.
But I will always hope and will praise You more and more.
My mouth shall
shew forth thy righteousness and thy salvation all
the day; for I know not
the numbers
thereof.
My mouth will declare Your righteousness and Your salvation all day long, though I cannot know their full measure.
I will go in the strength of the Lord GOD: I will make mention of thy righteousness, even of thine only.
I will enter in
the strength of
the Lord GOD; I will
proclaim Your righteousness—Yours alone.
Now also when I am old and greyheaded, O God,
forsake me not; until I have shewed thy strength unto this generation, and thy power to every one that is to come.
Even when I am old and gray, do not
forsake me, O God, until I
proclaim Your power to
the next generation, Your might to all who are to come.
Thy righteousness also, O God, is very high, who hast done great things: O God, who is like unto thee!
Your righteousness reaches to the heavens, O God, You who have done great things. Who, O God, is like You?
Thou, which hast shewed me great and
sore troubles, shalt
quicken me again, and shalt bring me up again from
the depths of
the earth.
Though You have shown me many troubles and misfortunes, You will revive me once again. Even from the depths of the earth You will bring me back up.
I will also praise
thee with
the psaltery, even thy truth, O my God: unto
thee will I sing with
the harp, O thou Holy One of Israel.
So I will praise You with
the harp for Your faithfulness, O my God; I will sing praise to You with
the lyre, O Holy One of Israel.
My lips shall greatly
rejoice when I sing unto
thee; and my soul, which thou hast redeemed.
When I sing praise to You my lips will
shout for joy, along with my soul, which You have redeemed.
My tongue also shall talk of thy righteousness all
the day long: for
they are confounded, for
they are brought unto shame, that seek my
hurt.
My tongue will indeed
proclaim Your righteousness all day long, for those who seek my
harm are disgraced and confounded.
Give the king thy judgments, O God, and thy righteousness unto the king’s son.
Endow the king with Your justice, O God, and
the son of
the king with Your righteousness.
The mountains shall bring peace to the people, and the little hills, by righteousness.
May the mountains bring peace to the people, and the hills bring righteousness.
He shall judge
the poor of
the people, he shall save
the children of
the needy, and shall break in pieces
the oppressor.
They shall fear
thee as long as
the sun and moon
endure, throughout all generations.
May they fear him as long as the sun shines, as long as the moon remains, through all generations.
He shall come down like rain upon
the mown grass: as showers that water
the earth.
May he be like rain that falls on freshly cut grass, like spring showers that water the earth.
In his days shall
the righteous
flourish; and abundance of peace so long as
the moon endureth.
May
the righteous
flourish in his days and prosperity abound, until
the moon is no more.
He shall have dominion also from sea to sea, and from the river unto the ends of the earth.
May he rule from sea to sea, and from the Euphrates to the ends of the earth.
They that dwell in
the wilderness shall bow before him; and his enemies shall
lick the dust.
May
the nomads bow before him, and his enemies
lick the dust.
The kings of
Tarshish and of
the isles shall bring presents:
the kings of
Sheba and Seba shall offer gifts.
May
the kings of
Tarshish and distant shores bring tribute; may
the kings of
Sheba and Seba offer gifts.
For he shall deliver
the needy when he crieth;
the poor also, and him that hath no helper.
For he will deliver
the needy who cry out and
the afflicted who have no helper.
He shall
redeem their soul from
deceit and violence: and precious shall
their blood be in his sight.
He will
redeem them from oppression and violence, for
their blood is precious in his sight.
And he shall live, and to him shall be given of
the gold of
Sheba: prayer also shall be made for him continually; and daily shall he be praised.
Long may he live! May gold from
Sheba be given him. May people ever pray for him; may
they bless him all day long.
There shall be an handful of corn in
the earth upon
the top of
the mountains;
the fruit
thereof shall
shake like
Lebanon: and
they of
the city shall
flourish like grass of
the earth.
May
there be an abundance of grain in
the land; may it
sway atop the hills. May its fruit trees
flourish like
the forests of
Lebanon, and its people like
the grass of
the field.
His name shall
endure for ever: his name shall be continued as long as
the sun: and men shall be blessed in him: all nations shall call him blessed.
May his name
endure forever; may his name continue as long as
the sun shines. In him may all nations be blessed; may
they call him blessed.
Blessed be
the LORD God,
the God of Israel, who only doeth
wondrous things.
Blessed be
the LORD God,
the God of Israel, who alone does
marvelous deeds.
And blessed be his glorious name for ever: and let
the whole earth be filled with his glory;
Amen, and
Amen.
And blessed be His glorious name
forever; may all
the earth be filled with His glory.
Amen and
amen.
The prayers of David
the son of
Jesse are ended.
Thus conclude
the prayers of David son of
Jesse.
For I was
envious at
the foolish, when I saw
the prosperity of
the wicked.
For there are no bands in their death: but their strength is firm.
They have no struggle in their death; their bodies are well-fed.
They are not in trouble as other men; neither are they plagued like other men.
They are free of
the burdens others carry;
they are not
afflicted like other men.
Therefore pride compasseth them about as a chain; violence covereth them as a garment.
Therefore pride is
their necklace; a garment of violence covers
them.
Their eyes stand out with fatness: they have more than heart could wish.
From their prosperity proceeds iniquity; the imaginations of their hearts run wild.
They are corrupt, and speak wickedly concerning oppression:
they speak
loftily.
They set their mouth against the heavens, and their tongue walketh through the earth.
They set
their mouths against
the heavens, and
their tongues
strut across
the earth.
Therefore his people return
hither: and waters of a full cup are
wrung out to
them.
So their people return to this place and drink up waters in abundance.
And
they say, How
doth God know? and is
there knowledge in
the most High?
The wicked say, “How can God know? Does the Most High have knowledge?”
Behold,
these are
the ungodly, who
prosper in
the world;
they increase in riches.
Behold, these are the wicked— always carefree as they increase their wealth.
For all
the day long have I been plagued, and
chastened every morning.
For I am
afflicted all day long and punished every morning.
If I say, I will speak thus; behold, I should
offend against
the generation of thy children.
If I had said, “I will speak this way,”
then I would have
betrayed Your children.
Until I went into the sanctuary of God; then understood I their end.
until I entered God’s sanctuary;
then I
discerned their end.
Surely thou
didst set
them in
slippery places: thou castedst
them down into destruction.
Surely You set
them on
slick ground; You cast
them down into ruin.
How are
they brought into
desolation, as in a moment!
they are utterly consumed with terrors.
How suddenly they are laid waste, completely swept away by terrors!
As a dream when one awaketh; so, O Lord, when thou awakest, thou shalt
despise their image.
So
foolish was I, and ignorant: I was as a beast before
thee.
I was senseless and ignorant; I was a
brute beast before You.
Nevertheless I am continually with
thee: thou hast
holden me by my right hand.
Yet I am always with You; You hold my right hand.
Whom have I in heaven but thee? and there is none upon earth that I desire beside thee.
Whom have I in heaven but You? And on earth I desire no one besides You.
My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever.
My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is
the strength of my heart and my portion
forever.
For, lo,
they that are far from
thee shall perish: thou hast destroyed all
them that go a
whoring from
thee.
Those far from You will surely perish; You destroy all who are unfaithful to You.
But it is good for me to draw near to God: I have put my trust in the Lord GOD, that I may declare all thy works.
But as for me, it is good to draw near to God. I have made
the Lord GOD my refuge, that I may
proclaim all Your works.
O God, why hast thou cast us off for ever? why
doth thine anger smoke against
the sheep of thy pasture?
Why have You rejected us
forever, O God? Why does Your anger
smolder against
the sheep of Your pasture?
Remember thy congregation, which thou hast purchased of old;
the rod of thine inheritance, which thou hast redeemed; this mount
Zion, wherein thou hast dwelt.
Remember Your congregation, which You purchased long ago and redeemed as
the tribe of Your inheritance— Mount
Zion where You dwell.
Lift up thy feet unto the perpetual desolations; even all that the enemy hath done wickedly in the sanctuary.
Turn Your steps to
the everlasting ruins, to everything in
the sanctuary
the enemy has destroyed.
Thine enemies
roar in
the midst of thy congregations;
they set up
their ensigns for signs.
Your foes have
roared within Your meeting place;
they have
unfurled their banners as signs,
A man was famous according as he had lifted up axes upon the thick trees.
But now they break down the carved work thereof at once with axes and hammers.
and
smashing all
the carvings with hatchets and picks.
They have cast fire into thy sanctuary,
they have
defiled by casting down
the dwelling place of thy name to
the ground.
They have burned Your sanctuary to
the ground;
they have
defiled the dwelling place of Your Name.
They said in their hearts, Let us destroy them together: they have burned up all the synagogues of God in the land.
They said in
their hearts, “We will
crush them completely.”
They burned down every place where God met us in
the land.
We see not our signs: there is no more any prophet: neither is there among us any that knoweth how long.
There are no signs for us to see. There is no longer any prophet. And none of us knows how long this will last.
O God, how long shall
the adversary reproach? shall
the enemy
blaspheme thy name for ever?
Why withdrawest thou thy hand, even thy right hand?
pluck it out of thy
bosom.
Why do You withdraw Your strong right hand? Stretch it out to destroy them!
For God is my King of old, working salvation in the midst of the earth.
Yet God is my King from ancient times, working salvation on the earth.
Thou
didst divide
the sea by thy strength: thou brakest
the heads of
the dragons in
the waters.
You divided
the sea by Your strength; You
smashed the heads of
the dragons of
the sea;
Thou brakest
the heads of
leviathan in pieces, and gavest him to be meat to
the people inhabiting
the wilderness.
Thou
didst cleave the fountain and
the flood: thou driedst up mighty rivers.
You broke open the fountain and the flood; You dried up the ever-flowing rivers.
