But if ye refuse and
rebel, ye shall be
devoured with
the sword: for
the mouth of
the LORD hath spoken it.
But if you resist and
rebel, you will be
devoured by
the sword.” For
the mouth of
the LORD has spoken.
How is
the faithful city become an
harlot! it was full of judgment; righteousness
lodged in it; but now murderers.
See how
the faithful city has become a
harlot! She once was full of justice; righteousness resided within her, but now only murderers!
Thy princes are
rebellious, and companions of
thieves: every one loveth gifts, and followeth after rewards:
they judge not
the fatherless, neither
doth the cause of
the widow come unto
them.
Your rulers are rebels, friends of
thieves.
They all love bribes and
chasing after rewards.
They do not defend
the fatherless, and
the plea of
the widow never comes before
them.
Therefore saith
the Lord,
the LORD of hosts,
the mighty One of Israel,
Ah, I will ease me of mine
adversaries, and
avenge me of mine enemies:
Therefore the Lord GOD of Hosts,
the Mighty One of Israel, declares: “
Ah, I will be relieved of My foes and
avenge Myself on My enemies.
And I will turn my hand upon
thee, and purely
purge away thy
dross, and take away all thy tin:
I will turn My hand against you; I will thoroughly
purge your
dross; I will remove all your impurities.
And I will restore thy judges as at the first, and thy counsellors as at the beginning: afterward thou shalt be called, The city of righteousness, the faithful city.
I will restore your judges as at first, and your counselors as at the beginning. After that you will be called the City of Righteousness, the Faithful City.”
And
the destruction of
the transgressors and of
the sinners shall be together, and
they that
forsake the LORD shall be consumed.
But rebels and sinners will together be
shattered, and those who
forsake the LORD will perish.
For
they shall be
ashamed of
the oaks which ye have desired, and ye shall be confounded for
the gardens that ye have chosen.
Surely you will be
ashamed of
the sacred oaks in which you have delighted; you will be
embarrassed by
the gardens that you have chosen.
And
the strong shall be as
tow, and
the maker of it as a
spark, and
they shall both burn together, and none shall
quench them.
The strong man will become
tinder and his work will be a
spark; both will burn together, with no one to
quench the flames.
The word that Isaiah the son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem.
This is the message that was revealed to Isaiah son of Amoz concerning Judah and Jerusalem:
And it shall come to pass in
the last days, that
the mountain of
the LORD’S house shall be established in
the top of
the mountains, and shall be
exalted above
the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it.
In the last days the mountain of the house of the LORD will be established as the chief of the mountains; it will be raised above the hills, and all nations will stream to it.
And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to
the mountain of
the LORD, to
the house of
the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of
Zion shall go forth
the law, and
the word of
the LORD from Jerusalem.
And many peoples will come and say: “Come, let us go up to
the mountain of
the LORD, to
the house of
the God of Jacob. He will teach us His ways so that we may walk in His paths.” For
the law will go forth from
Zion, and
the word of
the LORD from Jerusalem.
And he shall judge among
the nations, and shall
rebuke many people: and
they shall beat
their swords into plowshares, and
their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall
they learn war any more.
Then He will judge between
the nations and
arbitrate for many peoples.
They will beat
their swords into plowshares and
their spears into
pruning hooks. Nation will no longer take up
the sword against nation, nor train anymore for war.
O house of Jacob, come ye, and let us walk in the light of the LORD.
Come, O house of Jacob, let us walk in the light of the LORD.
Therefore thou hast
forsaken thy people
the house of Jacob, because
they be
replenished from
the east, and are soothsayers like
the Philistines, and
they please
themselves in
the children of strangers.
For You have abandoned Your people, the house of Jacob, because they are filled with influences from the east; they are soothsayers like the Philistines; they strike hands with the children of foreigners.
Their land also is full of silver and gold, neither is
there any end of
their treasures;
their land is also full of horses, neither is
there any end of
their chariots:
Their land is full of silver and gold, with no limit to
their treasures;
their land is full of horses, with no limit to
their chariots.
Their land also is full of idols; they worship the work of their own hands, that which their own fingers have made:
Their land is full of idols; they bow down to the work of their hands, to what their fingers have made.
And
the mean man boweth down, and
the great man humbleth himself:
therefore forgive them not.
So mankind is brought low, and man is humbled— do not
forgive them!
Enter into the rock, and hide thee in the dust, for fear of the LORD, and for the glory of his majesty.
Go into
the rocks and hide in
the dust from
the terror of
the LORD and
the splendor of His majesty.
The lofty looks of man shall be humbled, and
the haughtiness of men shall be bowed down, and
the LORD alone shall be
exalted in that day.
The proud look of man will be humbled, and
the loftiness of men brought low;
the LORD alone will be
exalted in that day.
For the day of the LORD of hosts shall be upon every one that is proud and lofty, and upon every one that is lifted up; and he shall be brought low:
For
the Day of
the LORD of Hosts will come against all
the proud and lofty, against all that is
exalted— it will be humbled—
And upon all
the cedars of
Lebanon, that are high and lifted up, and upon all
the oaks of
Bashan,
against all
the cedars of
Lebanon, lofty and lifted up, against all
the oaks of
Bashan,
And upon all the high mountains, and upon all the hills that are lifted up,
against all the tall mountains, against all the high hills,
And upon all
the ships of
Tarshish, and upon all pleasant pictures.
against every ship of
Tarshish, and against every stately vessel.
And
the loftiness of man shall be bowed down, and
the haughtiness of men shall be made low: and
the LORD alone shall be
exalted in that day.
So
the pride of man will be brought low, and
the loftiness of men will be humbled;
the LORD alone will be
exalted in that day,
And
the idols he shall utterly
abolish.
and
the idols will
vanish completely.
And
they shall go into
the holes of
the rocks, and into
the caves of
the earth, for fear of
the LORD, and for
the glory of his majesty, when he ariseth to
shake terribly the earth.
Men will
flee to caves in
the rocks and holes in
the ground, away from
the terror of
the LORD and from
the splendor of His majesty, when He rises to
shake the earth.
In that day a man shall cast his idols of silver, and his idols of gold, which they made each one for himself to worship, to the moles and to the bats;
In that day men will cast away to the moles and bats their idols of silver and gold— the idols they made to worship.
To go into
the clefts of
the rocks, and into
the tops of
the ragged rocks, for fear of
the LORD, and for
the glory of his majesty, when he ariseth to
shake terribly the earth.
They will
flee to caverns in
the rocks and crevices in
the cliffs, away from
the terror of
the LORD and from
the splendor of His majesty, when He rises to
shake the earth.
Cease ye from man, whose breath is in his nostrils: for wherein is he to be accounted of?
Put no more trust in man, who has only the breath in his nostrils. Of what account is he?
For, behold,
the Lord,
the LORD of hosts,
doth take away from Jerusalem and from Judah
the stay and
the staff,
the whole stay of bread, and
the whole stay of water,
For behold, the Lord GOD of Hosts is about to remove from Jerusalem and Judah both supply and support: the whole supply of food and water,
The mighty man, and
the man of war,
the judge, and
the prophet, and
the prudent, and
the ancient,
the mighty man and
the warrior,
the judge and
the prophet,
the soothsayer and
the elder,
And I will give children to be their princes, and babes shall rule over them.
“I will make mere lads their leaders, and children will rule over them.”
And
the people shall be
oppressed, every one by another, and every one by his neighbour:
the child shall
behave himself proudly against
the ancient, and
the base against
the honourable.
The people will
oppress one another, man against man,
neighbor against
neighbor;
the young will rise up against
the old, and
the base against
the honorable.
When a man shall take hold of his brother of the house of his father, saying, Thou hast clothing, be thou our ruler, and let this ruin be under thy hand:
A man will seize his brother within his father’s house: “You have a
cloak—you be our leader! Take charge of this
heap of
rubble.”
In that day shall he
swear, saying, I will not be an
healer; for in my house is neither bread nor clothing: make me not a ruler of
the people.
On that day he will cry
aloud: “I am not a
healer. I have no food or clothing in my house. Do not make me leader of
the people!”
For Jerusalem is ruined, and Judah is fallen: because
their tongue and
their doings are against
the LORD, to
provoke the eyes of his glory.
For Jerusalem has
stumbled and Judah has fallen because
they spoke and acted against
the LORD,
defying His glorious presence.
The shew of
their countenance
doth witness against
them; and
they declare
their sin as
Sodom,
they hide it not.
Woe unto
their soul! for
they have rewarded evil unto
themselves.
The expression on
their faces testifies against
them, and like
Sodom they flaunt their sin;
they do not
conceal it.
Woe to
them, for
they have brought
disaster upon
themselves.
Say ye to the righteous, that it shall be well with him: for they shall eat the fruit of their doings.
Tell the righteous it will be well with them, for they will enjoy the fruit of their labor.
Woe unto
the wicked! it shall be ill with him: for
the reward of his hands shall be given him.
Woe to
the wicked;
disaster is upon
them! For
they will be repaid with what
their hands have done.
As for my people, children are
their oppressors, and women rule over
them. O my people,
they which lead
thee cause
thee to
err, and destroy
the way of thy paths.
Youths
oppress My people, and women rule over
them. O My people, your guides mislead you;
they turn you from your paths.
The LORD standeth up to
plead, and standeth to judge
the people.
The LORD arises to
contend; He stands to judge
the people.
The LORD will enter into judgment with
the ancients of his people, and
the princes
thereof: for ye have eaten up
the vineyard;
the spoil of
the poor is in your houses.
The LORD brings this charge against
the elders and leaders of His people: “You have
devoured the vineyard;
the plunder of
the poor is in your houses.
What mean ye that ye beat my people to pieces, and
grind the faces of
the poor? saith
the LORD GOD of hosts.
Why do you
crush My people and
grind the faces of
the poor?” declares
the Lord GOD of Hosts.
Moreover
the LORD saith, Because
the daughters of
Zion are
haughty, and walk with stretched forth necks and
wanton eyes, walking and
mincing as
they go, and making a
tinkling with
their feet:
Therefore the LORD will
smite with a
scab the crown of
the head of
the daughters of
Zion, and
the LORD will discover
their secret parts.
the Lord will bring sores on
the heads of
the daughters of
Zion, and
the LORD will make
their foreheads bare.”
In that day
the Lord will take away
the bravery of
their tinkling ornaments about
their feet, and
their cauls, and
their round tires like
the moon,
In that day
the Lord will take away
their finery:
their anklets and headbands and crescents;
The chains, and the bracelets, and the mufflers,
their pendants, bracelets, and veils;
The bonnets, and the ornaments of the legs, and the headbands, and the tablets, and the earrings,
their headdresses,
ankle chains, and sashes;
their perfume bottles and charms;
The rings, and nose jewels,
their signet rings and nose rings;
The changeable suits of
apparel, and
the mantles, and
the wimples, and
the crisping pins,
their festive robes, capes, cloaks, and purses;
The glasses, and the fine linen, and the hoods, and the vails.
and their mirrors, linen garments, tiaras, and shawls.
And it shall come to pass, that instead of sweet smell
there shall be
stink; and instead of a
girdle a rent; and instead of well set hair
baldness; and instead of a stomacher a
girding of
sackcloth; and burning instead of beauty.
Instead of
fragrance there will be a
stench; instead of a belt, a rope; instead of styled hair,
baldness; instead of fine clothing,
sackcloth; instead of beauty, shame.
Thy men shall fall by the sword, and thy mighty in the war.
Your men will fall by the sword, and your warriors in battle.
And
the gates of
Zion will
lament and
mourn; destitute, she will sit on
the ground.
In that day shall the branch of the LORD be beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the earth shall be excellent and comely for them that are escaped of Israel.
On that day the Branch of the LORD will be beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the land will be the pride and glory of Israel’s survivors.
And it shall come to pass, that he that is left in
Zion, and he that remaineth in Jerusalem, shall be called holy, even every one that is written among
the living in Jerusalem:
Whoever remains in
Zion and
whoever is left in Jerusalem will be called holy— all in Jerusalem who are recorded among
the living—
When
the Lord shall have washed away
the filth of
the daughters of
Zion, and shall have
purged the blood of Jerusalem from
the midst
thereof by
the spirit of judgment, and by
the spirit of burning.
when
the Lord has washed away
the filth of
the daughters of
Zion and
cleansed the bloodstains from
the heart of Jerusalem by a spirit of judgment and a spirit of fire.
And
the LORD will
create upon every dwelling place of mount
Zion, and upon her
assemblies, a cloud and smoke by day, and
the shining of a flaming fire by night: for upon all
the glory shall be a defence.
Then the LORD will
create over all of Mount
Zion and over her
assemblies a cloud of smoke by day and a
glowing flame of fire by night. For over all
the glory
there will be a
canopy,
And
there shall be a tabernacle for a shadow in
the daytime from
the heat, and for a place of refuge, and for a
covert from storm and from rain.
a shelter to give shade from the heat by day, and a refuge and hiding place from the storm and the rain.
And he
fenced it, and gathered out
the stones
thereof, and planted it with
the choicest vine, and built a tower in
the midst of it, and also made a winepress
therein: and he looked that it should bring forth grapes, and it brought forth wild grapes.
He
dug it up and cleared
the stones and planted
the finest vines. He built a
watchtower in
the middle and
dug out a winepress as well. He waited for
the vineyard to yield good grapes, but
the fruit it produced was
sour!
And now go to; I will tell you what I will do to my
vineyard: I will take away
the hedge thereof, and it shall be eaten up; and break down
the wall
thereof, and it shall be
trodden down:
Now I will tell you what I am about to do to My
vineyard: I will take away its
hedge, and it will be consumed; I will
tear down its wall, and it will be
trampled.
And I will lay it waste: it shall not be
pruned, nor
digged; but
there shall come up briers and thorns: I will also command
the clouds that
they rain no rain upon it.
I will make it a wasteland, neither
pruned nor cultivated, and thorns and briers will grow up. I will command
the clouds that rain shall not fall on it.”
For
the vineyard of
the LORD of hosts is
the house of Israel, and
the men of Judah his pleasant plant: and he looked for judgment, but behold oppression; for righteousness, but behold a cry.
For
the vineyard of
the LORD of Hosts is
the house of Israel, and
the men of Judah are
the plant of His delight. He looked for justice, but saw
bloodshed; for righteousness, but heard a cry of distress.
Woe unto
them that join house to house, that lay field to field, till
there be no place, that
they may be placed alone in
the midst of
the earth!
Woe to you who add house to house and join field to field until no place is left and you live alone in
the land.
In mine ears said
the LORD of hosts, Of a truth many houses shall be
desolate, even great and fair, without inhabitant.
I heard
the LORD of Hosts declare: “Surely many houses will become
desolate, great mansions left unoccupied.
Yea, ten acres of
vineyard shall yield one bath, and
the seed of an homer shall yield an
ephah.
For ten acres of
vineyard will yield but a bath of wine, and a homer of seed only an
ephah of grain.”
Woe unto
them that rise up early in
the morning, that
they may follow strong drink; that continue until night, till wine inflame
them!
Woe to those who rise early in
the morning in pursuit of strong drink, who
linger into
the evening, to be inflamed by wine.
And
the harp, and
the viol,
the tabret, and pipe, and wine, are in
their feasts: but
they regard not
the work of
the LORD, neither consider
the operation of his hands.
At
their feasts are
the lyre and
harp, tambourines and flutes and wine.
They disregard
the actions of
the LORD and fail to see
the work of His hands.
Therefore my people are gone into captivity, because
they have no knowledge: and
their honourable men are
famished, and
their multitude dried up with
thirst.
Therefore hell hath enlarged herself, and opened her mouth without measure: and
their glory, and
their multitude, and
their pomp, and he that rejoiceth, shall descend into it.
Therefore Sheol enlarges its throat and opens wide its enormous jaws, and down go
Zion’s nobles and masses, her revelers and carousers!
And the mean man shall be brought down, and the mighty man shall be humbled, and the eyes of the lofty shall be humbled:
So mankind will be brought low, and each man humbled;
the arrogant will lower
their eyes.
But
the LORD of hosts shall be
exalted in judgment, and God that is holy shall be
sanctified in righteousness.
But
the LORD of Hosts will be
exalted by His justice, and
the holy God will show Himself holy in righteousness.
Then shall the lambs feed after their manner, and the waste places of the fat ones shall strangers eat.
Lambs will
graze as in
their own pastures, and strangers will feed in
the ruins of
the wealthy.
Woe unto
them that draw iniquity with cords of vanity, and sin as it were with a
cart rope:
Woe to those who draw iniquity with cords of
deceit and pull sin along with
cart ropes,
That say, Let him make speed, and
hasten his work, that we may see it: and let
the counsel of
the Holy One of Israel draw
nigh and come, that we may know it!
to those who say, “Let Him
hurry and
hasten His work so that we may see it! Let
the plan of
the Holy One of Israel come so that we may know it!”
Woe unto
them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!
Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who turn darkness to light and light to darkness, who replace bitter with sweet and sweet with bitter.
Woe unto
them that are wise in
their own eyes, and
prudent in
their own sight!
Woe to those who are wise in
their own eyes and
clever in
their own sight.
Woe unto
them that are mighty to drink wine, and men of strength to
mingle strong drink:
Woe to those who are heroes in drinking wine and champions in
mixing strong drink,
Which
justify the wicked for reward, and take away
the righteousness of
the righteous from him!
who
acquit the guilty for a
bribe and deprive
the innocent of justice.
Therefore as
the fire devoureth
the stubble, and
the flame consumeth
the chaff, so
their root shall be as
rottenness, and
their blossom shall go up as dust: because
they have cast away
the law of
the LORD of hosts, and
despised the word of
the Holy One of Israel.
Therefore, as a tongue of fire consumes
the straw, and as dry grass shrivels in
the flame, so
their roots will decay and
their blossoms will blow away like dust; for
they have rejected
the instruction of
the LORD of Hosts and
despised the word of
the Holy One of Israel.
Therefore is
the anger of
the LORD
kindled against his people, and he hath stretched forth his hand against
them, and hath
smitten them: and
the hills did
tremble, and
their carcases were
torn in
the midst of
the streets. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.
Therefore the anger of
the LORD burns against His people; His hand is raised against
them to strike
them down.
The mountains
quake, and
the corpses lay like refuse in
the streets.
Despite all this, His anger is not turned away; His hand is still upraised.
And he will lift up an
ensign to
the nations from far, and will hiss unto
them from
the end of
the earth: and, behold,
they shall come with speed swiftly:
He lifts a
banner for
the distant nations and whistles for those at
the ends of
the earth. Behold—how speedily and swiftly
they come!
None of
them grows
weary or stumbles; no one slumbers or sleeps. No belt is loose and no
sandal strap is broken.
Whose arrows are sharp, and all
their bows bent,
their horses’
hoofs shall be counted like flint, and
their wheels like a
whirlwind:
Their arrows are sharpened, and all
their bows are
strung.
The hooves of
their horses are like flint;
their chariot wheels are like a
whirlwind.
Their roaring shall be like a lion,
they shall
roar like young lions:
yea,
they shall
roar, and lay hold of
the prey, and shall carry it away safe, and none shall deliver it.
Their roaring is like that of a lion;
they roar like young lions.
They growl and seize
their prey;
they carry it away from
deliverance.
And in that day
they shall
roar against
them like
the roaring of
the sea: and if one look unto
the land, behold darkness and sorrow, and
the light is
darkened in
the heavens
thereof.
In that day
they will
roar over it, like
the roaring of
the sea. If one looks over
the land, he will see darkness and distress; even
the light will be obscured by clouds.
In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple.
In
the year that King Uzziah died, I saw
the Lord seated on a throne, high and
exalted; and
the train of His
robe filled
the temple.
Above it stood
the seraphims: each one had six wings; with
twain he covered his face, and with
twain he covered his feet, and with
twain he did fly.
Above Him stood
seraphim, each having six wings: With two wings
they covered
their faces, with two
they covered
their feet, and with two
they were flying.
And one
cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is
the LORD of hosts:
the whole earth is full of his glory.
And they were calling out to one another: “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of Hosts; all the earth is full of His glory.”
And
the posts of
the door moved at
the voice of him that
cried, and
the house was filled with smoke.
At
the sound of
their voices
the doorposts and thresholds
shook, and
the temple was filled with smoke.
Then said I,
Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in
the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen
the King,
the LORD of hosts.
Then I said: “
Woe is me, for I am ruined, because I am a man of unclean lips dwelling among a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen
the King,
the LORD of Hosts.”
Then flew one of
the seraphims unto me, having a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with
the tongs from off
the altar:
Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me.
Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying: “Whom shall I send? Who will go for Us?” And I said: “Here am I. Send me!”
Make
the heart of this people fat, and make
their ears heavy, and shut
their eyes; lest
they see with
their eyes, and hear with
their ears, and understand with
their heart, and convert, and be
healed.
Make
the hearts of this people calloused;
deafen their ears and close
their eyes. Otherwise
they might see with
their eyes, hear with
their ears, understand with
their hearts, and turn and be
healed.”
Then said I, Lord, how long? And he answered, Until
the cities be wasted without inhabitant, and
the houses without man, and
the land be utterly
desolate,
Then I asked: “How long, O Lord?” And He replied: “Until
the cities lie ruined and without inhabitant, until
the houses are left unoccupied and
the land is
desolate and
ravaged,
And
the LORD have removed men far away, and
there be a great
forsaking in
the midst of
the land.
until
the LORD has driven men far away and
the land is utterly
forsaken.
But yet in it shall be a tenth, and it shall return, and shall be eaten: as a
teil tree, and as an oak, whose substance is in
them, when
they cast
their leaves: so
the holy seed shall be
the substance
thereof.
And though a tenth remains in
the land, it will be burned again. As
the terebinth and oak leave stumps when felled, so
the holy seed will be a
stump in
the land.”
And it came to pass in
the days of
Ahaz the son of Jotham,
the son of Uzziah, king of Judah, that Rezin
the king of Syria, and Pekah
the son of Remaliah, king of Israel, went up toward Jerusalem to war against it, but could not prevail against it.
Now in
the days that
Ahaz son of Jotham,
the son of Uzziah, was king of Judah, Rezin king of
Aram marched up to
wage war against Jerusalem. He was accompanied by Pekah son of Remaliah
the king of Israel, but he could not overpower
the city.
