Son of man, What is the vine tree more than any tree, or than a branch which is among the trees of the forest?
“Son of man, how does the wood of the vine
surpass any other branch among the
trees in the forest?
Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; As the vine tree among the trees of the forest, which I have given to the fire for fuel, so will I give the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Like the wood of the vine among the trees of the forest, which I have given to the fire for fuel, so I will give up the people of Jerusalem.
He took also of the seed of the land, and planted it in a fruitful field; he placed it by great waters, and set it as a
willow tree.
He took some of the seed of the land and planted it in fertile soil; he placed it by abundant waters and set it out like a
willow.
And all the
trees of the field shall know that I the LORD have brought down the high
tree, have
exalted the low
tree, have dried up the green
tree, and have made the dry
tree to
flourish: I the LORD have brought down the high
tree, have
exalted the low
tree, have dried up the green
tree, and have made the dry
tree to
flourish: I the LORD have spoken and have done it.
Then all the
trees of the field will know that I am the LORD. I bring the tall
tree down and make the low
tree tall. I dry up the green
tree and make the
withered tree flourish. I, the LORD, have spoken, and I have done it.’”
For when I had brought them into the land, for the which I lifted up mine hand to give it to them, then they saw every high hill, and all the thick
trees, and they offered there their sacrifices, and there they presented the
provocation of their offering: there also they made their sweet savour, and poured out there their drink offerings.
When I brought them into the land that I
swore to give them and they saw any high hill or
leafy tree, there they offered their sacrifices, presented offerings that
provoked Me, sent up their
fragrant incense, and poured out their drink offerings.
And say to the forest of the south, Hear the word of the LORD; Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will
kindle a fire in thee, and it shall
devour every green
tree in thee, and every dry
tree: the flaming flame shall not be
quenched, and all faces from the south to the north shall be burned therein.
Say to the forest of the Negev: Hear the word of the LORD! This is what the Lord GOD says: I am about to
ignite in you a fire, and it will
devour all your
trees, both green and dry. The
blazing flame will not be
quenched, and by it every face from south to north will be
scorched.
It is sharpened to make a
sore slaughter; it is
furbished that it may
glitter: should we then make
mirth? it contemneth the rod of my son, as every
tree.
it is sharpened for the slaughter, polished to
flash like
lightning! Should we
rejoice in the
scepter of My son? The sword despises every such stick.
They have made all thy ship boards of
fir trees of Senir: they have taken cedars from
Lebanon to make masts for thee.
The waters made him great, the deep set him up on high with her rivers running round about his plants, and sent out her little rivers unto all the trees of the field.
The waters made it grow; the deep springs made it tall, directing their streams all around its base and sending their channels to all the trees of the field.
Therefore his height was
exalted above all the
trees of the field, and his boughs were multiplied, and his branches became long because of the multitude of waters, when he shot forth.
Therefore it towered higher than all the trees of the field. Its branches multiplied, and its boughs grew long as it spread them out because of the abundant waters.
The cedars in the garden of God could not hide him: the
fir trees were not like his boughs, and the
chesnut trees were not like his branches; nor any
tree in the garden of God was like unto him in his beauty.
The cedars in the garden of God could not rival it; the
cypresses could not compare with its branches, nor the plane
trees match its boughs. No
tree in the garden of God could compare with its beauty.
I have made him fair by the multitude of his branches: so that all the
trees of
Eden, that were in the garden of God,
envied him.
I made it beautiful with its many branches, the
envy of all the
trees of
Eden, which were in the garden of God.’
To the end that none of all the
trees by the waters
exalt themselves for their height, neither shoot up their top among the thick boughs, neither their
trees stand up in their height, all that drink water: for they are all delivered unto death, to the
nether parts of the earth, in the midst of the children of men, with them that go down to the pit.
This happened so that no other
trees by the waters would become great in height and set their tops among the clouds, and no other well-watered
trees would reach them in height. For they have all been
consigned to death, to the depths of the earth, among the mortals who descend to the Pit.’
Thus saith the Lord GOD; In the day when he went down to the grave I caused a
mourning: I covered the deep for him, and I restrained the floods thereof, and the great waters were stayed: and I caused
Lebanon to
mourn for him, and all the
trees of the field
fainted for him.
This is what the Lord GOD says: ‘On the day it was brought down to
Sheol, I caused
mourning. I covered the deep because of it; I held back its rivers; its abundant waters were restrained. I made
Lebanon mourn for it, and all the
trees of the field
fainted because of it.
I made the nations to
shake at the sound of his fall, when I cast him down to
hell with them that descend into the pit: and all the
trees of
Eden, the choice and best of
Lebanon, all that drink water, shall be comforted in the
nether parts of the earth.
I made the nations
quake at the sound of its
downfall, when I cast it down to
Sheol with those who descend to the Pit. Then all the
trees of
Eden, the choicest and best of
Lebanon, all the well-watered
trees, were
consoled in the earth below.
To whom art thou thus like in glory and in greatness among the
trees of
Eden? yet shalt thou be brought down with the
trees of
Eden unto the
nether parts of the earth: thou shalt lie in the midst of the
uncircumcised with them that be slain by the sword. This is Pharaoh and all his multitude, saith the Lord GOD.
Who then is like you in glory and greatness among the
trees of
Eden? You also will be brought down to the depths of the earth to be with the
trees of
Eden. You will lie among the
uncircumcised, with those slain by the sword. This is Pharaoh and all his multitude, declares the Lord GOD.’”
And the tree of the field shall yield her fruit, and the earth shall yield her increase, and they shall be safe in their land, and shall know that I am the LORD, when I have broken the bands of their yoke, and delivered them out of the hand of those that served themselves of them.
The
trees of the field will give their fruit, and the land will yield its produce; My flock will be secure in their land. Then they will know that I am the LORD, when I have broken the bars of their yoke and delivered them from the hands that
enslaved them.
And I will multiply the fruit of the tree, and the increase of the field, that ye shall receive no more reproach of famine among the heathen.
I will also make the fruit of the
trees and the crops of the field
plentiful, so that you will no longer bear reproach among the nations on account of famine.
And there were narrow windows to the little chambers, and to their posts within the gate round about, and likewise to the arches: and windows were round about inward: and upon each post were palm trees.
The gate chambers and their side pillars had
beveled windows all around the inside of the
gateway. The
porticos also had windows all around on the inside. Each side
pillar was decorated with palm
trees.
And their windows, and their arches, and their palm trees, were after the measure of the gate that looketh toward the east; and they went up unto it by seven steps; and the arches thereof were before them.
Its windows,
portico, and palm
trees had the same measurements as those of the gate facing east. Seven steps led up to it, with its
portico opposite them.
And there were seven steps to go up to it, and the arches thereof were before them: and it had palm trees, one on this side, and another on that side, upon the posts thereof.
Seven steps led up to it, and its
portico was opposite them; it had palm
trees on its side pillars, one on each side.
And the arches thereof were toward the utter court; and palm trees were upon the posts thereof: and the going up to it had eight steps.
Its
portico faced the outer court, and its side pillars were decorated with palm
trees. Eight steps led up to it.
And the arches thereof were toward the outward court; and palm trees were upon the posts thereof, on this side, and on that side: and the going up to it had eight steps.
Its
portico faced the outer court, and its side pillars were decorated with palm
trees on each side. Eight steps led up to it.
And the posts thereof were toward the utter court; and palm trees were upon the posts thereof, on this side, and on that side: and the going up to it had eight steps.
Its
portico faced the outer court, and its side pillars were decorated with palm
trees on each side. Eight steps led up to it.
And it was made with cherubims and palm
trees, so that a palm
tree was between a
cherub and a
cherub; and every
cherub had two faces;
were alternating carved
cherubim and palm
trees. Each
cherub had two faces:
So that the face of a man was toward the palm tree on the one side, and the face of a young lion toward the palm tree on the other side: it was made through all the house round about.
the face of a man was toward the palm tree on one side, and the face of a young lion was toward the palm tree on the other side. They were carved all the way around the temple.
From the ground unto above the door were cherubims and palm trees made, and on the wall of the temple.
Cherubim and palm
trees were carved on the wall of the outer sanctuary from the floor to the space above the entrance.
And there were made on them, on the doors of the temple, cherubims and palm
trees, like as were made upon the walls; and there were thick planks upon the face of the
porch without.
Cherubim and palm
trees like those on the walls were carved on the doors of the outer sanctuary, and there was a wooden
canopy outside, on the front of the
portico.
And there were narrow windows and palm
trees on the one side and on the other side, on the sides of the
porch, and upon the side chambers of the house, and thick planks.
There were
beveled windows and palm
trees on the sidewalls of the
portico. The side rooms of the temple also had
canopies.
Now when I had returned, behold, at the bank of the river were very many trees on the one side and on the other.
When I arrived, I saw a great number of trees along both banks of the river.
And by the river upon the bank thereof, on this side and on that side, shall grow all
trees for meat, whose leaf shall not
fade, neither shall the fruit thereof be consumed: it shall bring forth new fruit according to his months, because their waters they issued out of the sanctuary: and the fruit thereof shall be for meat, and the leaf thereof for medicine.
Along both banks of the river, fruit
trees of all kinds will grow. Their leaves will not wither, and their fruit will not fail. Each month they will bear fruit, because the water from the sanctuary flows to them. Their fruit will be used for food and their leaves for
healing.”
Thus were the visions of mine head in my bed; I saw, and behold a tree in the midst of the earth, and the height thereof was great.
In these visions of my mind as I was lying in bed, I saw this come to pass: There was a tree in the midst of the land, and its height was great.
The tree grew, and was strong, and the height thereof reached unto heaven, and the sight thereof to the end of all the earth:
The tree grew large and strong; its top reached the sky, and it was visible to the ends of the earth.
He
cried aloud, and said thus,
Hew down the
tree, and cut off his branches,
shake off his leaves, and
scatter his fruit: let the beasts get away from under it, and the fowls from his branches:
He called out in a loud voice: ‘Cut down the
tree and
chop off its branches; strip off its leaves and
scatter its fruit. Let the beasts
flee from under it, and the birds from its branches.
The tree that thou sawest, which grew, and was strong, whose height reached unto the heaven, and the sight thereof to all the earth;
The tree you saw that grew large and strong, whose top reached the sky and was visible to all the earth,
It is thou, O king, that art grown and become strong: for thy greatness is grown, and reacheth unto heaven, and thy dominion to the end of the earth.
you, O king, are that tree! For you have become great and strong; your greatness has grown to reach the sky, and your dominion extends to the ends of the earth.
And whereas the king saw a watcher and an holy one coming down from heaven, and saying,
Hew the
tree down, and destroy it; yet leave the
stump of the roots thereof in the earth, even with a band of iron and brass, in the tender grass of the field; and let it be wet with the
dew of heaven, and let his portion be with the beasts of the field, till seven times pass over him;
And you, O king, saw a watcher, a holy one, coming down from heaven and saying: ‘Cut down the
tree and destroy it, but leave the
stump with its roots in the ground, and a band of iron and bronze around it, in the tender grass of the field. Let him be
drenched with the
dew of heaven, and
graze with the beasts of the field till seven times pass him by.’
And whereas they commanded to leave the
stump of the
tree roots; thy kingdom shall be sure unto thee, after that thou shalt have known that the heavens do rule.
As for the command to leave the
stump of the
tree with its roots, your kingdom will be restored to you as soon as you acknowledge that Heaven rules.
And I will destroy her vines and her fig
trees,
whereof she hath said, These are my rewards that my lovers have given me: and I will make them a forest, and the beasts of the field shall eat them.
I will destroy her vines and fig
trees, which she thinks are the wages paid by her lovers. So I will make them into a
thicket, and the beasts of the field will
devour them.
I found Israel like grapes in the wilderness; I saw your fathers as the firstripe in the fig
tree at her first time: but they went to
Baal-peor, and separated themselves unto that shame; and their abominations were according as they loved.
I found Israel like grapes in the wilderness. I saw your fathers as the firstfruits of the fig
tree in its first season. But they went to
Baal-peor, and consecrated themselves to Shame; so they became as
detestable as the thing they loved.
His branches shall spread, and his beauty shall be as the olive
tree, and his smell as
Lebanon.
Ephraim shall say, What have I to do any more with idols? I have heard him, and observed him: I am like a green
fir tree. From me is thy fruit found.
O Ephraim, what have I to do anymore with idols? It is I who answer and watch over him. I am like a flourishing
cypress; your fruit comes from Me.
He hath laid my vine waste, and barked my fig tree: he hath made it clean bare, and cast it away; the branches thereof are made white.
It has laid waste My
grapevine and
splintered My fig
tree. It has
stripped off the bark and thrown it away; the branches have turned white.
The vine is dried up, and the fig
tree languisheth; the
pomegranate tree, the palm
tree also, and the apple
tree, even all the
trees of the field, are
withered: because joy is
withered away from the sons of men.
O LORD, to thee will I cry: for the fire hath
devoured the pastures of the wilderness, and the flame hath burned all the
trees of the field.
To You, O LORD, I call, for fire has consumed the open pastures and flames have
scorched all the
trees of the field.
Be not afraid, ye beasts of the field: for the pastures of the wilderness do spring, for the tree beareth her fruit, the fig tree and the vine do yield their strength.
Do not be afraid, O beasts of the field, for the open pastures have turned green, the trees bear their fruit, and the fig tree and vine yield their best.
I have
smitten you with blasting and
mildew: when your gardens and your vineyards and your fig
trees and your olive
trees increased, the
palmerworm devoured them: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the LORD.
“I struck you with
blight and
mildew in your growing gardens and vineyards; the
locust devoured your fig and olive
trees, yet you did not return to Me,” declares the LORD.
Then answered
Amos, and said to
Amaziah, I was no prophet, neither was I a prophet’s son; but I was an
herdman, and a gatherer of sycomore fruit:
“I was not a prophet,”
Amos replied, “nor was I the son of a prophet; rather, I was a
herdsman and a tender of
sycamore-fig
trees.
But they shall sit every man under his vine and under his fig tree; and none shall make them afraid: for the mouth of the LORD of hosts hath spoken it.
And each man will sit under his own vine and under his own fig
tree, with no one to
frighten him. For the mouth of the LORD of Hosts has spoken.
The shield of his mighty men is made red, the
valiant men are in scarlet: the
chariots shall be with flaming torches in the day of his preparation, and the
fir trees shall be
terribly shaken.
The shields of his mighty men are red; the
valiant warriors are dressed in scarlet. The fittings of the
chariots flash like fire on the day they are prepared, and the spears of
cypress have been
brandished.
All thy strong holds shall be like fig
trees with the firstripe figs: if they be
shaken, they shall even fall into the mouth of the eater.
All your fortresses are fig
trees with the first ripe figs; when
shaken, they fall into the mouth of the eater!
Although the fig
tree shall not
blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no
herd in the stalls:
Though the fig
tree does not
bud and no fruit is on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though the sheep are cut off from the fold and no cattle are in the stalls,
Is the seed yet in the
barn?
yea, as yet the vine, and the fig
tree, and the
pomegranate, and the olive
tree, hath not brought forth: from this day will I
bless you.
Is there still seed in the
barn? The vine, the fig, the
pomegranate, and the olive
tree have not yet yielded fruit. But from this day on, I will
bless you.”
I saw by night, and behold a man riding upon a red horse, and he stood among the
myrtle trees that were in the bottom; and behind him were there red horses,
speckled, and white.
I looked out into the night and saw a man riding on a red horse. He was standing among the
myrtle trees in the hollow, and behind him were red,
sorrel, and white horses.
And the man that stood among the
myrtle trees answered and said, These are they whom the LORD hath sent to walk to and
fro through the earth.
Then the man standing among the
myrtle trees explained, “They are the ones the LORD has sent to
patrol the earth.”
And they answered the angel of the LORD that stood among the
myrtle trees, and said, We have walked to and
fro through the earth, and, behold, all the earth sitteth still, and is at rest.
And the riders answered the angel of the LORD who was standing among the
myrtle trees, “We have
patrolled the earth, and behold, all the earth is at rest and
tranquil.”
In that day, saith the LORD of hosts, shall ye call every man his neighbour under the vine and under the fig tree.
On that day, declares the LORD of Hosts, you will each
invite your
neighbor to sit under your own vine and fig
tree.’”
And two olive
trees by it, one upon the right side of the
bowl, and the other upon the left side thereof.
There are also two olive
trees beside it, one on the right side of the
bowl and the other on its left.”
Then answered I, and said unto him, What are these two olive
trees upon the right side of the
candlestick and upon the left side thereof?
Then I asked the angel, “What are the two olive trees on the right and left of the lampstand?”
And now also the
axe is laid unto the root of the
trees: therefore every
tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is
hewn down, and cast into the fire.
The
axe lies ready at the root of the
trees, and every
tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.
Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.
Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit.
A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.
A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit.
Every
tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is
hewn down, and cast into the fire.
Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.
Either make the tree good, and his fruit good; or else make the tree corrupt, and his fruit corrupt: for the tree is known by his fruit.
Make a tree good and its fruit will be good, or make a tree bad and its fruit will be bad; for a tree is known by its fruit.
Which indeed is the least of all seeds: but when it is grown, it is the greatest among herbs, and becometh a
tree, so that the birds of the air come and
lodge in the branches thereof.
Although it is the smallest of all seeds, yet it grows into the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and nest in its branches.”
And a very great multitude spread their garments in the way; others cut down branches from the trees, and strawed them in the way.
A massive crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road.
And when he saw a fig
tree in the way, he came to it, and found nothing
thereon, but leaves only, and said unto it, Let no fruit grow on thee
henceforward for ever. And presently the fig
tree withered away.
Seeing a fig
tree by the road, He went up to it but found nothing on it except leaves. “May you never bear fruit again!” He said. And immediately the
tree withered.
And when the disciples saw it, they
marvelled, saying, How soon is the fig
tree withered away!
When the disciples saw this, they
marveled and asked, “How did the fig
tree wither so quickly?”
Jesus answered and said unto them,
Verily I say unto you, If ye have faith, and doubt not, ye shall not only do this which is done to the fig
tree, but also if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; it shall be done.
“Truly I tell you,” Jesus replied, “if you have faith and do not doubt, not only will you do what was done to the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, ‘Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ it will happen.
Now learn a parable of the fig
tree; When his branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is
nigh:
Now learn this
lesson from the fig
tree: As soon as its branches become tender and
sprout leaves, you know that summer is near.
And he looked up, and said, I see men as trees, walking.
The man looked up and said, “I can see the people, but they look like trees walking around.”
And many spread their garments in the way: and others cut down branches off the trees, and strawed them in the way.
Many in the crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others spread branches they had cut from the fields.
And seeing a fig
tree afar off having leaves, he came, if
haply he might find any thing
thereon: and when he came to it, he found nothing but leaves; for the time of figs was not yet.
Seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, He went to see if there was any fruit on it. But when He reached it, He found nothing on it except leaves, since it was not the season for figs.
And Jesus answered and said unto it, No man eat fruit of thee
hereafter for ever. And his disciples heard it.
Then He said to the tree, “May no one ever eat of your fruit again.” And His disciples heard this statement.
And in the morning, as they passed by, they saw the fig tree dried up from the roots.
As they were walking back in the morning, they saw the fig
tree withered from its roots.
And Peter calling to
remembrance saith unto him, Master, behold, the fig
tree which thou cursedst is
withered away.
Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When her branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is near:
Now learn this
lesson from the fig
tree: As soon as its branches become tender and
sprout leaves, you know that summer is near.
And now also the
axe is laid unto the root of the
trees: every
tree therefore which bringeth not forth good fruit is
hewn down, and cast into the fire.
The
axe lies ready at the root of the
trees, and every
tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.”
For a good
tree bringeth not forth corrupt fruit; neither
doth a corrupt
tree bring forth good fruit.
No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit.
For every
tree is known by his own fruit. For of thorns men do not gather figs, nor of a
bramble bush gather they grapes.
For each tree is known by its own fruit. Indeed, figs are not gathered from thornbushes, nor grapes from brambles.
He spake also this parable; A certain man had a fig
tree planted in his
vineyard; and he came and sought fruit
thereon, and found none.
Then Jesus told this parable: “A man had a fig
tree that was planted in his
vineyard. He went to look for fruit on it, but did not find any.
Then said he unto the dresser of his
vineyard, Behold, these three years I come seeking fruit on this fig
tree, and find none: cut it down; why cumbereth it the ground?
So he said to the keeper of the
vineyard, ‘Look, for the past three years I have come to search for fruit on this fig
tree and
haven’t found any. Therefore cut it down! Why should it use up the soil?’
It is like a grain of
mustard seed, which a man took, and cast into his garden; and it grew, and waxed a great
tree; and the fowls of the air
lodged in the branches of it.
It is like a
mustard seed that a man
tossed into his garden. It grew and became a
tree, and the birds of the air nested in its branches.”
And the Lord said, If ye had faith as a grain of
mustard seed, ye might say unto this
sycamine tree, Be thou
plucked up by the root, and be thou planted in the sea; and it should obey you.
And the Lord answered, “If you have faith the size of a
mustard seed, you can say to this
mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it will obey you.
And he ran before, and
climbed up into a sycomore
tree to see him: for he was to pass that way.
And he spake to them a parable; Behold the fig tree, and all the trees;
Then Jesus told them a parable: “Look at the fig tree and all the trees.
For if they do these things in a green tree, what shall be done in the dry?
For if men do these things while the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry?”
Nathanael saith unto him, Whence knowest thou me? Jesus answered and said unto him, Before that Philip called thee, when thou
wast under the fig
tree, I saw thee.
“How do You know me?”
Nathanael asked. Jesus replied, “Before Philip called you, I saw you under the fig
tree.”
Jesus answered and said unto him, Because I said unto thee, I saw thee under the fig tree, believest thou? thou shalt see greater things than these.
Jesus said to him, “Do you believe just because I told you I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these.”
Took branches of palm
trees, and went forth to meet him, and
cried,
Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord.
They took palm branches and went out to meet Him,
shouting: “
Hosanna!” “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Blessed is the King of Israel!”
The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom ye
slew and
hanged on a
tree.
The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom you had killed by hanging Him on a tree.
And we are witnesses of all things which he did both in the land of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom they
slew and
hanged on a
tree:
We are witnesses of all that He did, both in the land of the Jews and in Jerusalem. And although they put Him to death by hanging Him on a tree,
And when they had fulfilled all that was written of him, they took him down from the
tree, and laid him in a
sepulchre.
When they had carried out all that was written about Him, they took Him down from the tree and laid Him in a tomb.
And if some of the branches be broken off, and thou, being a wild olive
tree,
wert graffed in among them, and with them partakest of the root and fatness of the olive
tree;
Now if some branches have been broken off, and you, a wild olive shoot, have been
grafted in among the others to share in the
nourishment of the olive root,
For if thou
wert cut out of the olive
tree which is wild by nature, and
wert graffed contrary to nature into a good olive
tree: how much more shall these, which be the natural branches, be graffed into their own olive
tree?
For if you were cut from a wild olive
tree, and contrary to nature were
grafted into one that is cultivated, how much more readily will these, the natural branches, be
grafted into their own olive
tree!
Christ hath redeemed us from the
curse of the law, being made a
curse for us: for it is written,
Cursed is every one that hangeth on a
tree:
Christ redeemed us from the
curse of the law by becoming a
curse for us. For it is written: “
Cursed is
everyone who is hung on a
tree.”
Can the fig
tree, my brethren, bear olive
berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh.
My brothers, can a fig
tree grow olives, or a
grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.
Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the
tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were
healed.
He Himself bore our sins in His body on the
tree, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. “By His stripes you are
healed.”
These are spots in your feasts of charity, when they feast with you, feeding themselves without fear: clouds they are without water, carried about of winds;
trees whose fruit withereth, without fruit, twice dead,
plucked up by the roots;
These men are hidden reefs in your love feasts,
shamelessly feasting with you but
shepherding only themselves. They are clouds without water, carried along by the wind; fruitless
trees in autumn, twice dead after being uprooted.
