The bricks are fallen down, but we will build
with hewn stones: the sycomores are cut down, but we will change them into cedars.
“The bricks have fallen, but we will rebuild with finished stone; the sycamores have been felled, but we will replace them with cedars.”
The Syrians before, and the Philistines behind; and they shall
devour Israel
with open mouth. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.
Aram from the east and Philistia from the west have
devoured Israel
with open mouths.
Despite all this, His anger is not turned away; His hand is still upraised.
To turn aside the
needy from judgment, and to take away the right from the poor of my people, that widows may be their prey, and that they may
rob the fatherless!
to deprive the poor of fair treatment and
withhold justice from the
oppressed of My people, to make widows their prey and orphans their
plunder.
Without me they shall bow down under the prisoners, and they shall fall under the slain. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.
Nothing will remain but to
crouch among the
captives or fall among the slain.
Despite all this, His anger is not turned away; His hand is still upraised.
Shall the
axe boast itself against him that heweth
therewith? or shall the saw
magnify itself against him that shaketh it? as if the rod should
shake itself against them that lift it up, or as if the staff should lift up itself, as if it were no wood.
Does an
axe raise itself above the one who swings it? Does a saw
boast over him who saws
with it? It would be like a rod waving the one who lifts it, or a staff lifting him who is not wood!
For though thy people Israel be as the sand of the sea, yet a
remnant of them shall return: the consumption decreed shall overflow
with righteousness.
Though your people, O Israel, be like the sand of the sea, only a
remnant will return. Destruction has been decreed, overflowing
with righteousness.
Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD of hosts, O my people that dwellest in
Zion, be not afraid of the Assyrian: he shall
smite thee
with a rod, and shall lift up his staff against thee, after the manner of Egypt.
Therefore this is what the Lord GOD of Hosts says: “O My people who dwell in
Zion, do not fear Assyria, who strikes you
with a rod and lifts his staff against you as the Egyptians did.
Behold, the Lord, the LORD of hosts, shall
lop the
bough with terror: and the high ones of
stature shall be
hewn down, and the
haughty shall be humbled.
Behold, the Lord GOD of Hosts will
lop off the branches
with terrifying power. The tall trees will be cut down, the lofty ones will be felled.
And he shall cut down the thickets of the forest
with iron, and
Lebanon shall fall by a mighty one.
He will clear the forest thickets
with an
axe, and
Lebanon will fall before the Mighty One.
But
with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove
with equity for the
meek of the earth: and he shall
smite the earth
with the rod of his mouth, and
with the breath of his lips shall he
slay the wicked.
but
with righteousness He will judge the poor, and
with equity He will decide for the lowly of the earth. He will strike the earth
with the rod of His mouth and
slay the wicked
with the breath of His lips.
The wolf also shall dwell
with the lamb, and the
leopard shall lie down
with the
kid; and the
calf and the young lion and the
fatling together; and a little child shall lead them.
The wolf will live
with the lamb, and the
leopard will lie down
with the goat; the
calf and young lion and
fatling will be together, and a little child will lead them.
And the cow and the bear shall feed; their young ones shall lie down together: and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.
The cow will
graze with the bear, their young will lie down together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox.
And the LORD shall utterly destroy the tongue of the Egyptian sea; and
with his mighty wind shall he
shake his hand over the river, and shall
smite it in the seven streams, and make men go over
dryshod.
The LORD will
devote to destruction the gulf of the Sea of Egypt;
with a
scorching wind He will
sweep His hand over the Euphrates. He will split it into seven streams for men to cross
with dry
sandals.
And in that day thou shalt say, O LORD, I will praise thee: though thou
wast angry with me, thine anger is turned away, and thou comfortedst me.
In that day you will say: “O LORD, I will praise You. Although You were
angry with me, Your anger has turned away, and You have comforted me.
Therefore with joy shall ye draw water out of the wells of salvation.
With joy you will draw water from the springs of salvation,
And they shall be afraid: pangs and sorrows shall take hold of them; they shall be in pain as a woman that travaileth: they shall be
amazed one at another; their faces shall be as flames.
Terror, pain, and
anguish will seize them; they will
writhe like a woman in labor. They will look at one another, their faces
flushed with fear.
Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, cruel both
with wrath and fierce anger, to lay the land
desolate: and he shall destroy the sinners thereof out of it.
Behold, the Day of the LORD is coming— cruel,
with fury and burning anger— to make the earth a
desolation and to destroy the sinners
within it.
And it shall be as the
chased roe, and as a sheep that no man taketh up: they shall every man turn to his own people, and
flee every one into his own land.
Like a
hunted gazelle, like a sheep
without a
shepherd, each will return to his own people, each will
flee to his native land.
Their bows also shall
dash the young men to pieces; and they shall have no
pity on the fruit of the
womb; their eye shall not
spare children.
Their bows will
dash young men to pieces; they will have no mercy on the fruit of the
womb; they will not look
with pity on the children.
For the LORD will have mercy on Jacob, and will yet choose Israel, and set them in their own land: and the strangers shall be joined
with them, and they shall
cleave to the house of Jacob.
For the LORD will have
compassion on Jacob; once again He will choose Israel and settle them in their own land. The foreigner will join them and unite
with the house of Jacob.
He who
smote the people in wrath
with a continual stroke, he that ruled the nations in anger, is
persecuted, and none hindereth.
It struck the peoples in anger
with unceasing blows; it subdued the nations in
rage with relentless persecution.
Thy
pomp is brought down to the grave, and the noise of thy viols: the worm is spread under thee, and the worms cover thee.
Your
pomp has been brought down to
Sheol, along
with the music of your harps. Maggots are your bed and worms your
blanket.
But thou art cast out of thy grave like an
abominable branch, and as the
raiment of those that are slain, thrust through
with a sword, that go down to the stones of the pit; as a
carcase trodden under feet.
But you are cast out of your grave like a rejected branch, covered by those slain
with the sword, and
dumped into a rocky pit like a
carcass trampled underfoot.
Thou shalt not be joined
with them in burial, because thou hast destroyed thy land, and slain thy people: the seed of evildoers shall never be
renowned.
You will not join them in burial, since you have destroyed your land and slaughtered your own people. The offspring of the wicked will never again be mentioned.
Prepare slaughter for his children for the iniquity of their fathers; that they do not rise, nor possess the land, nor fill the face of the world with cities.
Prepare a place to slaughter his sons for the
iniquities of their forefathers. They will never rise up to possess a land or cover the earth
with their cities.
I will also make it a possession for the
bittern, and pools of water: and I will
sweep it
with the
besom of destruction, saith the LORD of hosts.
“I will make her a place for owls and for swamplands; I will
sweep her away
with the
broom of destruction,” declares the LORD of Hosts.
And the
firstborn of the poor shall feed, and the
needy shall lie down in safety: and I will kill thy root
with famine, and he shall
slay thy
remnant.
Then the
firstborn of the poor will find pasture, and the
needy will lie down in safety, but I will kill your root by famine, and your
remnant will be slain.
In their streets they shall
gird themselves
with sackcloth: on the tops of their houses, and in their streets, every one shall
howl,
weeping abundantly.
In its streets they wear
sackcloth; on the rooftops and in the public squares they all
wail, falling down
weeping.
And
Heshbon shall cry, and Elealeh: their voice shall be heard even unto Jahaz: therefore the armed soldiers of Moab shall cry out; his life shall be
grievous unto him.
Heshbon and Elealeh cry out; their voices are heard as far as Jahaz. Therefore the soldiers of Moab cry out; their souls
tremble within.
My heart shall cry out for Moab; his fugitives shall
flee unto Zoar, an
heifer of three years old: for by the mounting up of Luhith
with weeping shall they go it up; for in the way of Horonaim they shall raise up a cry of destruction.
My heart
cries out over Moab; her fugitives
flee as far as Zoar, as far as Eglath-shelishiyah.
With weeping they
ascend the slope of Luhith; they
lament their destruction on the road to Horonaim.
For the waters of Nimrim shall be
desolate: for the hay is
withered away, the grass faileth, there is no green thing.
The waters of Nimrim are dried up, and the grass is
withered; the vegetation is gone, and the
greenery is no more.
Take counsel,
execute judgment; make thy shadow as the night in the midst of the
noonday; hide the outcasts;
bewray not him that wandereth.
“Give us counsel; render a decision. Shelter us at
noonday with shade as dark as night. Hide the refugees; do not
betray the one who flees.
Let mine outcasts dwell
with thee, Moab; be thou a
covert to them from the face of the
spoiler: for the
extortioner is at an end, the
spoiler ceaseth, the oppressors are consumed out of the land.
Let my fugitives stay
with you; be a refuge for Moab from the destroyer.” When the
oppressor has gone, destruction has ceased, and the oppressors have
vanished from the land,
For the fields of
Heshbon languish, and the vine of Sibmah: the lords of the heathen have broken down the principal plants thereof, they are come even unto Jazer, they
wandered through the wilderness: her branches are stretched out, they are gone over the sea.
For the fields of
Heshbon have
withered, along
with the grapevines of Sibmah. The rulers of the nations have
trampled its choicest vines, which had reached as far as Jazer and spread toward the desert. Their shoots had spread out and passed over the sea.
Therefore I will
bewail with the
weeping of Jazer the vine of Sibmah: I will water thee
with my tears, O
Heshbon, and Elealeh: for the
shouting for thy summer fruits and for thy harvest is fallen.
So I
weep with Jazer for the vines of Sibmah; I
drench Heshbon and Elealeh
with my tears.
Triumphant shouts have fallen silent over your summer fruit and your harvest.
But now the LORD hath spoken, saying,
Within three years, as the years of an
hireling, and the glory of Moab shall be
contemned,
with all that great multitude; and the
remnant shall be very small and feeble.
And now the LORD says, “In three years, as a
hired worker counts the years, Moab’s
splendor will become an object of contempt,
with all her many people. And those who are left will be few and feeble.”
The cities of Aroer are
forsaken: they shall be for flocks, which shall lie down, and none shall make them afraid.
The cities of Aroer are
forsaken; they will be left to the flocks, which will lie down
with no one to fear.
And it shall be as when the
harvestman gathereth the corn, and reapeth the ears
with his arm; and it shall be as he that gathereth ears in the valley of
Rephaim.
as the
reaper gathers the standing grain and harvests the ears
with his arm, as one gleans heads of grain in the Valley of
Rephaim.
And he shall not look to the altars, the work of his hands, neither shall respect that which his fingers have made, either the groves, or the images.
They will not look to the altars they have fashioned with their hands or to the Asherahs and incense altars they have made with their fingers.
Because thou hast forgotten the God of thy salvation, and hast not been mindful of the rock of thy strength, therefore shalt thou plant pleasant plants, and shalt set it with strange slips:
For you have forgotten the God of your salvation and failed to remember the Rock of your refuge. Therefore, though you
cultivate delightful plots and set out cuttings from
exotic vines—
Woe to the land shadowing
with wings, which is beyond the rivers of
Ethiopia:
For
afore the harvest, when the
bud is perfect, and the
sour grape is
ripening in the flower, he shall both cut off the sprigs
with pruninghooks, and take away and cut down the branches.
For before the harvest, when the
blossom is gone and the flower becomes a
ripening grape, He will cut off the shoots
with a
pruning knife and remove and discard the branches.
The burden of Egypt. Behold, the LORD rideth upon a swift cloud, and shall come into Egypt: and the idols of Egypt shall be moved at his presence, and the heart of Egypt shall
melt in the midst of it.
This is the burden against Egypt: Behold, the LORD rides on a swift cloud; He is coming to Egypt. The idols of Egypt will
tremble before Him, and the hearts of the Egyptians will
melt within them.
And they shall turn the rivers far away; and the
brooks of defence shall be
emptied and dried up: the reeds and flags shall
wither.
The canals will
stink; the streams of Egypt will
trickle and dry up; the reeds and rushes will
wither.
The paper reeds by the
brooks, by the mouth of the
brooks, and every thing sown by the
brooks, shall
wither, be driven away, and be no more.
The bulrushes by the Nile, by the mouth of the river, and all the fields sown along the Nile, will wither, blow away, and be no more.
In that day shall Egypt be like unto women: and it shall be afraid and fear because of the
shaking of the hand of the LORD of hosts, which he shaketh over it.
In that day the Egyptians will be like women. They will
tremble with fear beneath the
uplifted hand of the LORD of Hosts, when He brandishes it against them.
And it shall be for a sign and for a witness unto the LORD of hosts in the land of Egypt: for they shall cry unto the LORD because of the oppressors, and he shall send them a saviour, and a great one, and he shall deliver them.
It will be a sign and a
witness to the LORD of Hosts in the land of Egypt. When they cry out to the LORD because of their oppressors, He will send them a
savior and defender to
rescue them.
And the LORD shall be known to Egypt, and the Egyptians shall know the LORD in that day, and shall do sacrifice and
oblation;
yea, they shall
vow a
vow unto the LORD, and perform it.
The LORD will make Himself known to Egypt, and on that day Egypt will acknowledge the LORD. They will worship
with sacrifices and offerings; they will make vows to the LORD and
fulfill them.
And the LORD shall
smite Egypt: he shall
smite and
heal it: and they shall return even to the LORD, and he shall be intreated of them, and shall
heal them.
And the LORD will strike Egypt
with a plague; He will strike them but
heal them. They will turn to the LORD, and He will hear their prayers and
heal them.
In that day shall there be a
highway out of Egypt to Assyria, and the Assyrian shall come into Egypt, and the Egyptian into Assyria, and the Egyptians shall serve
with the Assyrians.
In that day there will be a
highway from Egypt to Assyria. The Assyrians will go to Egypt, and the Egyptians to Assyria. The Egyptians and Assyrians will worship together.
In that day shall Israel be the third with Egypt and with Assyria, even a blessing in the midst of the land:
In that day Israel will join a three-party alliance with Egypt and Assyria—a blessing upon the earth.
So shall the king of Assyria lead away the Egyptians prisoners, and the Ethiopians
captives, young and old, naked and
barefoot, even
with their buttocks uncovered, to the shame of Egypt.
so the king of Assyria will lead away the
captives of Egypt and the exiles of
Cush, young and old alike, naked and
barefoot,
with bared buttocks—to Egypt’s shame.
Therefore are my loins filled with pain: pangs have taken hold upon me, as the pangs of a woman that travaileth: I was bowed down at the hearing of it; I was dismayed at the seeing of it.
Therefore my body is filled
with anguish. Pain grips me, like the pains of a woman in labor. I am
bewildered to hear, I am dismayed to see.
And, behold, here cometh a
chariot of men,
with a couple of
horsemen. And he answered and said, Babylon is fallen, is fallen; and all the
graven images of her gods he hath broken unto the ground.
Look, here come the riders,
horsemen in pairs.” And one answered, saying: “Fallen, fallen is Babylon! All the images of her gods lie
shattered on the ground!”
The inhabitants of the land of Tema brought water to him that was
thirsty, they prevented
with their bread him that fled.
Bring water for the
thirsty, O dwellers of Tema; meet the refugees
with food.
For thus hath the Lord said unto me,
Within a year, according to the years of an
hireling, and all the glory of
Kedar shall fail:
For this is what the Lord says to me: “
Within one year, as a
hired worker would count it, all the glory of
Kedar will be gone.
Thou that art full of stirs, a
tumultuous city, a
joyous city: thy slain men are not slain
with the sword, nor dead in battle.
O city of
commotion, O town of
revelry? Your slain did not die by the sword, nor were they killed in battle.
All thy rulers are fled together, they are bound by the archers: all that are found in thee are bound together, which have fled from far.
All your rulers have fled together, captured without a bow. All your fugitives were captured together, having fled to a distant place.
Behold, the LORD will carry thee away with a mighty captivity, and will surely cover thee.
Look, O mighty man! The LORD is about to
shake you violently. He will take hold of you,
And I will
clothe him
with thy
robe, and
strengthen him
with thy
girdle, and I will commit thy government into his hand: and he shall be a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to the house of Judah.
I will
clothe him
with your
robe and
tie your
sash around him. I will put your authority in his hand, and he will be a father to the dwellers of Jerusalem and to the house of Judah.
The burden of Tyre.
Howl, ye ships of
Tarshish; for it is laid waste, so that there is no house, no entering in: from the land of
Chittim it is revealed to them.
This is the burden against Tyre:
Wail, O ships of
Tarshish, for Tyre is laid waste,
without house or
harbor. Word has reached them from the land of
Cyprus.
And it shall come to pass after the end of seventy years, that the LORD will visit Tyre, and she shall turn to her
hire, and shall commit
fornication with all the kingdoms of the world upon the face of the earth.
And at the end of seventy years, the LORD will restore Tyre. Then she will return to
hire as a
prostitute and sell herself to all the kingdoms on the face of the earth.
And it shall be, as
with the people, so
with the priest; as
with the servant, so
with his master; as
with the
maid, so
with her
mistress; as
with the
buyer, so
with the seller; as
with the
lender, so
with the
borrower; as
with the taker of
usury, so
with the giver of
usury to him.
The earth mourneth and fadeth away, the world languisheth and fadeth away, the
haughty people of the earth do
languish.
The earth mourns and
withers; the world languishes and fades; the
exalted of the earth waste away.
The new wine mourneth, the vine languisheth, all the merryhearted do
sigh.
The new wine dries up, the vine
withers. All the merrymakers now
groan.
They shall not drink wine with a song; strong drink shall be bitter to them that drink it.
They no longer sing and drink wine; strong drink is bitter to those who
consume it.
The city is left in ruins; its gate is reduced to
rubble.
Then the moon shall be confounded, and the sun
ashamed, when the LORD of hosts shall reign in mount
Zion, and in Jerusalem, and before his ancients gloriously.
The moon will be confounded and the sun will be
ashamed; for the LORD of Hosts will reign on Mount
Zion and in Jerusalem, and before His elders
with great glory.
Thou shalt bring down the noise of strangers, as the heat in a dry place; even the heat with the shadow of a cloud: the branch of the terrible ones shall be brought low.
like heat in a dry land. You
subdue the
uproar of foreigners. As the shade of a cloud cools the heat, so the song of the
ruthless is silenced.
And he shall spread forth his hands in the midst of them, as he that swimmeth spreadeth forth his hands to
swim: and he shall bring down their pride together
with the spoils of their hands.
He will spread out his hands
within it, as a
swimmer spreads his arms to
swim. His pride will be brought low,
despite the skill of his hands.
With my soul have I desired thee in the night;
yea,
with my spirit
within me will I seek thee early: for when thy judgments are in the earth, the inhabitants of the world will learn righteousness.
My soul longs for You in the night; indeed, my spirit seeks You at
dawn. For when Your judgments come upon the earth, the people of the world learn righteousness.
Like as a woman
with child, that draweth near the time of her
delivery, is in pain, and crieth out in her pangs; so have we been in thy sight, O LORD.
As a woman
with child about to give birth writhes and
cries out in pain, so were we in Your presence, O LORD.
We have been
with child, we have been in pain, we have as it were brought forth wind; we have not wrought any
deliverance in the earth; neither have the inhabitants of the world fallen.
We were
with child; we
writhed in pain; but we gave birth to wind. We have given no salvation to the earth, nor brought any life into the world.
Thy dead men shall live, together
with my dead body shall they arise.
Awake and sing, ye that dwell in dust: for thy
dew is as the
dew of herbs, and the earth shall cast out the dead.
Your dead will live; their bodies will rise.
Awake and sing, you who dwell in the dust! For your
dew is like the
dew of the morning, and the earth will bring forth her dead.
Or let him take hold of my strength, that he may make peace with me; and he shall make peace with me.
Or let them lay claim to My protection; let them make peace
with Me—
yes, let them make peace
with Me.”
He shall cause them that come of Jacob to take root: Israel shall
blossom and
bud, and fill the face of the world
with fruit.
In the days to come, Jacob will take root. Israel will
bud and
blossom and fill the whole world
with fruit.
In measure, when it shooteth forth, thou
wilt debate with it: he stayeth his rough wind in the day of the east wind.
By warfare and exile You
contended with her and removed her
with a fierce wind, as on the day the east wind blows.
When the boughs thereof are
withered, they shall be broken off: the women come, and set them on fire: for it is a people of no understanding: therefore he that made them will not have mercy on them, and he that formed them will
shew them no favour.
When its limbs are dry, they are broken off. Women come and use them for
kindling; for this is a people
without understanding. Therefore their Maker has no
compassion on them, and their
Creator shows them no favor.
And it shall come to pass in that day, that the great
trumpet shall be
blown, and they shall come which were ready to perish in the land of Assyria, and the outcasts in the land of Egypt, and shall worship the LORD in the holy mount at Jerusalem.
And in that day a great ram’s horn will sound, and those who were perishing in Assyria will come forth with those who were exiles in Egypt. And they will worship the LORD on the holy mountain in Jerusalem.
Woe to the crown of pride, to the drunkards of Ephraim, whose glorious beauty is a
fading flower, which are on the head of the fat valleys of them that are overcome
with wine!
Woe to the
majestic crown of Ephraim’s drunkards, to the
fading flower of his glorious
splendor, set on the summit above the fertile valley, the pride of those overcome by wine.
Behold, the Lord hath a mighty and strong one, which as a
tempest of
hail and a destroying storm, as a flood of mighty waters overflowing, shall cast down to the earth
with the hand.
Behold, the Lord has one who is strong and mighty. Like a
hailstorm or destructive
tempest, like a driving rain or flooding
downpour, he will
smash that crown to the ground.
For all tables are full of
vomit and
filthiness, so that there is no place clean.
For all their tables are covered
with vomit; there is not a place
without filth.
For
with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people.
Indeed,
with mocking lips and foreign tongues, He will speak to this people
Because ye have said, We have made a covenant
with death, and
with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing
scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under
falsehood have we
hid ourselves:
For you said, “We have made a covenant
with death; we have fashioned an agreement
with Sheol. When the
overwhelming scourge passes through it will not touch us, because we have made lies our refuge and
falsehood our hiding place.”
And your covenant
with death shall be
disannulled, and your agreement
with hell shall not stand; when the overflowing
scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be
trodden down by it.
Your covenant
with death will be dissolved, and your agreement
with Sheol will not stand. When the
overwhelming scourge passes through, you will be
trampled by it.
When he hath made plain the face thereof,
doth he not cast abroad the
fitches, and
scatter the
cummin, and cast in the principal wheat and the appointed barley and
rie in their place?
When he has leveled its surface, does he not
sow caraway and
scatter cumin? He plants wheat in rows and barley in plots, and
rye within its border.
Grain for bread must be ground, but it is not endlessly
threshed. Though the wheels of the
cart roll over it, the horses do not
crush it.
And I will camp against thee round about, and will lay siege against thee with a mount, and I will raise forts against thee.
I will camp in a circle around you; I will
besiege you
with towers and set up siege works against you.
Stay
yourselves, and wonder; cry ye out, and cry: they are
drunken, but not
with wine; they
stagger, but not
with strong drink.
Wherefore the Lord said,
Forasmuch as this people draw near me
with their mouth, and
with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the
precept of men:
Therefore the Lord said: “These people draw near to Me with their mouths and honor Me with their lips, but their hearts are far from Me. Their worship of Me is but rules taught by men.
Therefore, behold, I will proceed to do a marvellous work among this people, even a marvellous work and a wonder: for the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the understanding of their
prudent men shall be
hid.
Therefore I will again
confound these people
with wonder upon wonder. The wisdom of the wise will
vanish, and the intelligence of the intelligent will be hidden.”
That make a man an
offender for a word, and lay a
snare for him that reproveth in the gate, and turn aside the just for a thing of
nought.
those who
indict a man
with a word, who
ensnare the
mediator at the gate, and who
with false charges deprive the innocent of justice.
Woe to the
rebellious children, saith the LORD, that take counsel, but not of me; and that cover
with a covering, but not of my spirit, that they may add sin to sin:
“
Woe to the
rebellious children,” declares the LORD, “to those who carry out a plan that is not Mine, who form an alliance, but against My will,
heaping up sin upon sin.
That walk to go down into Egypt, and have not asked at my mouth; to
strengthen themselves in the strength of Pharaoh, and to trust in the shadow of Egypt!
They set out to go down to Egypt without asking My advice, to seek shelter under Pharaoh’s protection and take refuge in Egypt’s shade.
