Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets.
Surely the Lord GOD does nothing
without revealing His plan to His servants the prophets.
And I will
smite the winter house
with the summer house; and the houses of ivory shall perish, and the great houses shall have an end, saith the LORD.
I will
tear down the winter house along
with the summer house; the houses of ivory will also perish, and the great houses will come to an end,” declares the LORD.
The Lord GOD hath
sworn by his
holiness, that, lo, the days shall come upon you, that he will take you away
with hooks, and your
posterity with fishhooks.
The Lord GOD has
sworn by His
holiness: “Behold, the days are coming when you will be taken away
with hooks, and your
posterity with fishhooks.
Offer
leavened bread as a
thank offering, and loudly
proclaim your
freewill offerings. For that is what you children of Israel love to do,” declares the Lord GOD.
And I also have given you cleanness of teeth in all your cities, and want of bread in all your places: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the LORD.
“I
beset all your cities
with cleanness of teeth and all your towns
with lack of bread, yet you did not return to Me,” declares the LORD.
And also I have
withholden the rain from you, when there were yet three months to the harvest: and I caused it to rain upon one city, and caused it not to rain upon another city: one piece was rained upon, and the piece
whereupon it rained not
withered.
“I also
withheld the rain from you when the harvest was three months away. I sent rain on one city but
withheld it from another. One field received rain; another
without rain
withered.
I have
smitten you
with blasting and
mildew: when your gardens and your vineyards and your fig trees and your olive trees increased, the
palmerworm devoured them: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the LORD.
“I struck you
with blight and
mildew in your growing gardens and vineyards; the
locust devoured your fig and olive trees, yet you did not return to Me,” declares the LORD.
I have sent among you the
pestilence after the manner of Egypt: your young men have I slain
with the sword, and have taken away your horses; and I have made the
stink of your camps to come up unto your nostrils: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the LORD.
“I sent plagues among you like those of Egypt; I killed your young men
with the sword, along
with your captured horses. I filled your nostrils
with the
stench of your camp, yet you did not return to Me,” declares the LORD.
The virgin of Israel is fallen; she shall no more rise: she is
forsaken upon her land; there is none to raise her up.
“Fallen is Virgin Israel, never to rise again. She lies abandoned on her land, with no one to raise her up.”
Seek the LORD, and ye shall live; lest he break out like fire in the house of Joseph, and
devour it, and there be none to
quench it in
Bethel.
Seek the LORD and live, or He will
sweep like fire through the house of Joseph; it will
devour everything,
with no one at
Bethel to
extinguish it.
Seek him that maketh the seven stars and
Orion, and turneth the shadow of death into the morning, and maketh the day dark
with night: that calleth for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth: The LORD is his name:
He who made the
Pleiades and
Orion, who turns darkness into
dawn and darkens day into night, who
summons the waters of the sea and pours them over the face of the earth— the LORD is His name—
They
hate him that rebuketh in the gate, and they
abhor him that speaketh uprightly.
There are those who
hate the one who reproves in the gate and
despise him who speaks
with integrity.
Seek good, and not evil, that ye may live: and so the LORD, the God of hosts, shall be with you, as ye have spoken.
Seek good, not evil, so that you may live. And the LORD, the God of Hosts, will be with you, as you have claimed.
Shall not the day of the LORD be darkness, and not light? even very dark, and no brightness in it?
Will not the Day of the LORD be darkness and not light, even
gloom with no brightness in it?
That lie upon beds of ivory, and stretch themselves upon their couches, and eat the lambs out of the flock, and the
calves out of the midst of the
stall;
You lie on beds inlaid
with ivory, and
lounge upon your couches. You
dine on lambs from the flock and
calves from the
stall.
You drink wine by the bowlful and
anoint yourselves with the finest oils, but you fail to
grieve over the ruin of Joseph.
Therefore now shall they go
captive with the first that go
captive, and the
banquet of them that stretched themselves shall be removed.
Therefore, you will now go into exile as the first of the
captives, and your feasting and
lounging will come to an end.
The Lord GOD hath
sworn by himself, saith the LORD the God of hosts, I
abhor the
excellency of Jacob, and
hate his palaces: therefore will I deliver up the city
with all that is therein.
The Lord GOD has
sworn by Himself—the LORD, the God of Hosts, has declared: “I
abhor Jacob’s pride and
detest his citadels, so I will deliver up the city and everything in it.”
And a man’s uncle shall take him up, and he that burneth him, to bring out the bones out of the house, and shall say unto him that is by the sides of the house, Is there yet any with thee? and he shall say, No. Then shall he say, Hold thy tongue: for we may not make mention of the name of the LORD.
And when the relative who is to burn the bodies picks them up to remove them from the house, he will call to one inside, “Is
anyone else
with you?” “None,” that person will answer. “Silence,” the relative will
retort, “for the name of the LORD must not be
invoked.”
For, behold, the LORD commandeth, and he will
smite the great house
with breaches, and the little house
with clefts.
For the LORD gives a command: “The great house will be
smashed to pieces, and the small house to
rubble.”
Shall horses run upon the rock? will one
plow there
with oxen? for ye have turned judgment into gall, and the fruit of righteousness into
hemlock:
“Do horses
gallop on the cliffs? Does one
plow the sea
with oxen? But you have turned justice into poison and the fruit of righteousness into
wormwood—
Thus he shewed me: and, behold, the Lord stood upon a wall made by a plumbline, with a plumbline in his hand.
This is what He showed me: Behold, the Lord was standing by a wall true to
plumb,
with a
plumb line in His hand.
And the high places of Isaac shall be
desolate, and the
sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste; and I will rise against the house of
Jeroboam with the sword.
The high places of Isaac will be deserted, and the
sanctuaries of Israel will be laid waste; and I will rise up against the house of
Jeroboam with My sword.”
And the songs of the temple shall be howlings in that day, saith the Lord GOD: there shall be many dead bodies in every place; they shall cast them forth with silence.
“In that day,” declares the Lord GOD, “the songs of the temple will turn to
wailing. Many will be the corpses,
strewn in silence everywhere!”
Hear this, O ye that
swallow up the
needy, even to make the poor of the land to fail,
Hear this, you who
trample the
needy, who do away
with the poor of the land,
Saying, When will the new moon be gone, that we may sell corn? and the sabbath, that we may set forth wheat, making the
ephah small, and the
shekel great, and
falsifying the balances by
deceit?
asking, “When will the New Moon be over, that we may sell grain? When will the Sabbath end, that we may market wheat? Let us reduce the
ephah and increase the
shekel; let us
cheat with dishonest scales.
That we may
buy the poor for silver, and the
needy for a pair of
shoes;
yea, and sell the refuse of the wheat?
Let us
buy the poor
with silver and the
needy for a pair of
sandals, selling even the
chaff with the wheat!”
I saw the LORD standing upon the altar: and he said,
Smite the
lintel of the door, that the posts may
shake: and cut them in the head, all of them; and I will
slay the last of them
with the sword: he that fleeth of them shall not
flee away, and he that escapeth of them shall not be delivered.
I saw the Lord standing beside the altar, and He said: “Strike the tops of the pillars so that the thresholds
shake.
Topple them on the heads of all the people, and I will kill the rest
with the sword. None of those who
flee will get away; none of the fugitives will escape.
Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that the
plowman shall overtake the
reaper, and the
treader of grapes him that soweth seed; and the mountains shall drop sweet wine, and all the hills shall
melt.
“Behold, the days are coming,” declares the LORD, “when the
plowman will overtake the
reaper and the
treader of grapes, the
sower of seed. The mountains will
drip with sweet wine,
with which all the hills will flow.
All the men of thy
confederacy have brought thee even to the border: the men that were at peace
with thee have
deceived thee, and prevailed against thee; they that eat thy bread have laid a wound under thee: there is none understanding in him.
All the men allied
with you will drive you to the border; the men at peace
with you will
deceive and overpower you. Those who eat your bread will set a
trap for you
without your awareness of it.
For thy violence against thy brother Jacob shame shall cover thee, and thou shalt be cut off for ever.
Because of the violence against your brother Jacob, you will be covered
with shame and cut off
forever.
But
Jonah rose up to
flee unto
Tarshish from the presence of the LORD, and went down to
Joppa; and he found a ship going to
Tarshish: so he paid the
fare thereof, and went down into it, to go
with them unto
Tarshish from the presence of the LORD.
Wherefore they
cried unto the LORD, and said, We
beseech thee, O LORD, we
beseech thee, let us not perish for this man’s life, and lay not upon us innocent blood: for thou, O LORD, hast done as it pleased thee.
So they
cried out to the LORD: “Please, O LORD, do not let us perish on account of this man’s life! Do not charge us
with innocent blood! For You, O LORD, have done as You pleased.”
I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; the earth with her bars was about me for ever: yet hast thou brought up my life from corruption, O LORD my God.
To the roots of the mountains I descended; the earth beneath me
barred me in
forever! But You raised my life from the pit, O LORD my God!
When my soul
fainted within me I remembered the LORD: and my prayer came in unto thee, into thine holy temple.
As my life was
fading away, I remembered the LORD. My prayer went up to You, to Your holy temple.
But I will sacrifice unto thee
with the voice of
thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have
vowed. Salvation is of the LORD.
But I,
with the voice of
thanksgiving, will sacrifice to You. I will
fulfill what I have
vowed. Salvation is from the LORD!”
So
Jonah arose, and went unto
Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD. Now
Nineveh was an exceeding great city of three days’ journey.
This time
Jonah got up and went to
Nineveh, in accordance
with the word of the LORD. Now
Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, requiring a three-day journey.
For word came unto the king of
Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and he laid his
robe from him, and covered him
with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.
When word reached the king of
Nineveh, he got up from his throne, took off his royal
robe, covered himself
with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.
But let man and beast be covered
with sackcloth, and cry
mightily unto God:
yea, let them turn every one from his evil way, and from the violence that is in their hands.
Furthermore, let both man and beast be covered
with sackcloth, and have
everyone call out earnestly to God. Let each one turn from his evil ways and from the violence in his hands.
And the LORD God prepared a
gourd, and made it to come up over
Jonah, that it might be a shadow over his head, to deliver him from his grief. So
Jonah was exceeding
glad of the
gourd.
So the LORD God appointed a vine, and it grew up to provide shade over
Jonah’s head to ease his discomfort, and
Jonah was greatly pleased
with the plant.
But God prepared a worm when the morning rose the next day, and it
smote the
gourd that it
withered.
When
dawn came the next day, God appointed a worm that attacked the plant so that it
withered.
And all the
graven images thereof shall be beaten to pieces, and all the
hires thereof shall be burned
with the fire, and all the idols thereof will I lay
desolate: for she gathered it of the
hire of an
harlot, and they shall return to the
hire of an
harlot.
All her carved images will be
smashed to pieces; all her wages will be burned in the fire, and I will destroy all her idols. Since she collected the wages of a
prostitute, they will be used again on a
prostitute.
In that day shall one take up a parable against you, and
lament with a
doleful lamentation, and say, We be utterly
spoiled: he hath changed the portion of my people: how hath he removed it from me! turning away he hath divided our fields.
In that day they will take up a
proverb against you and
taunt you
with this bitter
lamentation: ‘We are utterly ruined! He has changed the portion of my people. How He has removed it from me! He has
allotted our fields to traitors.’”
Even of late my people is risen up as an enemy: ye pull off the
robe with the garment from them that pass by securely as men
averse from war.
But of late My people have risen up like an enemy: You strip off the splendid
robe from
unsuspecting passersby like men returning from battle.
Arise ye, and depart; for this is not your rest: because it is
polluted, it shall destroy you, even
with a
sore destruction.
Arise and depart, for this is not your place of rest, because its
defilement brings destruction— a
grievous destruction!
Who also eat the flesh of my people, and
flay their skin from off them; and they break their bones, and
chop them in pieces, as for the pot, and as flesh
within the
caldron.
You eat the flesh of my people after
stripping off their skin and breaking their bones. You
chop them up like flesh for the
cooking pot, like meat in a cauldron.”
Thus saith the LORD concerning the prophets that make my people
err, that
bite with their teeth, and cry, Peace; and he that putteth not into their mouths, they even prepare war against him.
This is what the LORD says: “As for the prophets who lead My people
astray, who
proclaim peace while they
chew with their teeth, but declare war against one who puts nothing in their mouths:
Therefore night shall be unto you, that ye shall not have a vision; and it shall be dark unto you, that ye shall not divine; and the sun shall go down over the prophets, and the day shall be dark over them.
Therefore night will come over you
without visions, and darkness
without divination. The sun will set on these prophets, and the
daylight will turn black over them.
But truly I am full of power by the spirit of the LORD, and of judgment, and of might, to declare unto Jacob his
transgression, and to Israel his sin.
As for me, however, I am filled
with power by the Spirit of the LORD,
with justice and courage, to declare to Jacob his
transgression and to Israel his sin.
They build up
Zion with blood, and Jerusalem
with iniquity.
But they shall sit every man under his vine and under his fig tree; and none shall make them afraid: for the mouth of the LORD of hosts hath spoken it.
And each man will sit under his own vine and under his own fig tree,
with no one to
frighten him. For the mouth of the LORD of Hosts has spoken.
Now gather
thyself in troops, O daughter of troops: he hath laid siege against us: they shall
smite the judge of Israel
with a rod upon the
cheek.
Now, O daughter of troops,
mobilize your troops; for a siege is laid against us!
With a rod they will strike the
cheek of the judge of Israel.
And they shall waste the land of Assyria
with the sword, and the land of
Nimrod in the entrances thereof: thus shall he deliver us from the Assyrian, when he cometh into our land, and when he treadeth
within our borders.
And they will rule the land of Assyria
with the sword, and the land of
Nimrod with the
blade drawn. So He will deliver us when Assyria invades our land and marches into our borders.
And the
remnant of Jacob shall be among the Gentiles in the midst of many people as a lion among the beasts of the forest, as a young lion among the flocks of sheep: who, if he go through, both treadeth down, and teareth in pieces, and none can deliver.
Then the
remnant of Jacob will be among the nations, in the midst of many peoples, like a lion among the beasts of the forest, like a young lion among flocks of sheep, which tramples and tears as it passes through,
with no one to
rescue them.
Hear ye, O mountains, the LORD’S controversy, and ye strong foundations of the earth: for the LORD hath a controversy
with his people, and he will
plead with Israel.
Hear, O mountains, the LORD’s
indictment, you
enduring foundations of the earth. For the LORD has a case against His people, and He will
argue it against Israel:
Wherewith shall I come before the LORD, and bow myself before the high God? shall I come before him
with burnt offerings,
with calves of a year old?
With what shall I come before the LORD when I bow before the God on high? Should I come to Him
with burnt offerings,
with year-old
calves?
Will the LORD be pleased
with thousands of rams, or
with ten thousands of rivers of oil? shall I give my
firstborn for my
transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?
Would the LORD be pleased
with thousands of rams,
with ten thousand rivers of oil? Shall I present my
firstborn for my
transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?
He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what
doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk
humbly with thy God?
He has shown you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk
humbly with your God?
Shall I count them pure
with the wicked balances, and
with the
bag of
deceitful weights?
Thou shalt eat, but not be satisfied; and thy casting down shall be in the midst of thee; and thou shalt take hold, but shalt not deliver; and that which thou deliverest will I give up to the sword.
You will eat but not be satisfied, and your hunger will remain with you. What you acquire, you will not preserve; and what you save, I will give to the sword.
Thou shalt
sow, but thou shalt not
reap; thou shalt
tread the olives, but thou shalt not
anoint thee
with oil; and sweet wine, but shalt not drink wine.
The good man is perished out of the earth: and there is none upright among men: they all lie in wait for blood; they
hunt every man his brother
with a net.
The godly man has perished from the earth; there is no one upright among men. They all lie in wait for blood; they
hunt one another
with a net.
That they may do evil
with both hands earnestly, the prince asketh, and the judge asketh for a reward; and the great man, he uttereth his
mischievous desire: so they
wrap it up.
Both hands are skilled at evil; the prince and the judge demand a
bribe. When the powerful utters his evil desire, they all
conspire together.
Then she that is mine enemy shall see it, and shame shall cover her which said unto me, Where is the LORD thy God? mine eyes shall behold her: now shall she be
trodden down as the
mire of the streets.
Then my enemy will see and will be covered
with shame— she who said to me, “Where is the LORD your God?” My eyes will see her; at that time she will be
trampled like mud in the streets.
Shepherd with Your staff Your people, the flock of Your inheritance. They live alone in a
woodland, surrounded by pastures. Let them
graze in
Bashan and
Gilead, as in the days of old.
He rebuketh the sea, and maketh it dry, and drieth up all the rivers:
Bashan languisheth, and
Carmel, and the flower of
Lebanon languisheth.
He rebukes the sea and dries it up; He makes all the rivers run dry.
Bashan and
Carmel wither, and the flower of
Lebanon wilts.
Who can stand before his
indignation? and who can
abide in the fierceness of his anger? his
fury is poured out like fire, and the rocks are thrown down by him.
But with an overrunning flood he will make an utter end of the place thereof, and darkness shall pursue his enemies.
But
with an
overwhelming flood He will make an end of
Nineveh and pursue His enemies into darkness.
For while they be folden together as thorns, and while they are
drunken as drunkards, they shall be
devoured as
stubble fully dry.
The shield of his mighty men is made red, the
valiant men are in scarlet: the
chariots shall be
with flaming torches in the day of his preparation, and the
fir trees shall be
terribly shaken.
The shields of his mighty men are red; the
valiant warriors are dressed in scarlet. The fittings of the
chariots flash like fire on the day they are prepared, and the spears of
cypress have been
brandished.
And Huzzab shall be led away
captive, she shall be brought up, and her maids shall lead her as
with the voice of doves, tabering upon their breasts.
It is decreed that the city be exiled and carried away; her maidservants
moan like doves, and beat upon their breasts.
Where is the dwelling of the lions, and the feeding place of the young lions, where the lion, even the old lion, walked, and the lion’s
whelp, and none made them afraid?
Where is the lions’
lair or the feeding ground of the young lions, where the lion and
lioness prowled with their cubs,
with nothing to
frighten them away?
The lion did
tear in pieces enough for his whelps, and
strangled for his lionesses, and filled his holes
with prey, and his dens
with ravin.
Woe to the
bloody city! it is all full of lies and
robbery; the prey departeth not;
Woe to the city of blood, full of lies, full of
plunder, never
without prey.
The
horseman lifteth up both the bright sword and the
glittering spear: and there is a multitude of slain, and a great number of carcases; and there is none end of their corpses; they
stumble upon their corpses:
Art thou better than
populous No, that was
situate among the rivers, that had the waters round about it, whose
rampart was the sea, and her wall was from the sea?
Are you better than
Thebes, stationed by the Nile
with water around her, whose
rampart was the sea, whose wall was the water?
All thy strong holds shall be like fig trees
with the firstripe figs: if they be
shaken, they shall even fall into the mouth of the eater.
All your fortresses are fig trees
with the first ripe figs; when
shaken, they fall into the mouth of the eater!
Thy
shepherds slumber, O king of Assyria: thy nobles shall dwell in the dust: thy people is scattered upon the mountains, and no man gathereth them.
O king of Assyria, your
shepherds slumber; your officers sleep. Your people are scattered on the mountains
with no one to gather them.
They take up all of them
with the angle, they catch them in their net, and gather them in their
drag: therefore they
rejoice and are
glad.
The
foe pulls all of them up
with a hook; he catches them in his
dragnet, and gathers them in his fishing net; so he rejoices
gladly.
Shall they therefore empty their net, and not
spare continually to
slay the nations?
Will he, therefore, empty his net and continue to
slay nations
without mercy?
And the LORD answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it.
Then the LORD answered me: “Write down this vision and clearly
inscribe it on tablets, so that a
herald may run
with it.
Shall not all these take up a parable against him, and a
taunting proverb against him, and say,
Woe to him that increaseth that which is not his! how long? and to him that ladeth himself
with thick clay!
Will not all of these take up a
taunt against him, speaking
with mockery and
derision: ‘
Woe to him who amasses what is not his and makes himself rich
with many loans! How long will this go on?’
Woe to him that buildeth a town
with blood, and stablisheth a city by iniquity!
Woe to him who builds a city
with bloodshed and establishes a town by iniquity!
For the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea.
For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD as the waters cover the sea.
Thou art filled
with shame for glory: drink thou also, and let thy
foreskin be uncovered: the cup of the LORD’S right hand shall be turned unto thee, and shameful
spewing shall be on thy glory.
You will be filled
with shame instead of glory. You too must drink and
expose your
uncircumcision! The cup in the LORD’s right hand will come around to you, and utter disgrace will cover your glory.
Woe unto him that saith to the wood,
Awake; to the
dumb stone, Arise, it shall teach! Behold, it is laid over
with gold and silver, and there is no breath at all in the midst of it.
Woe to him who says to wood, ‘
Awake!’ or to silent stone, ‘Arise!’ Can it give guidance? Behold, it is overlaid
with gold and silver, yet there is no breath in it at all.”
Thy bow was made quite naked, according to the oaths of the tribes, even thy word.
Selah. Thou
didst cleave the earth
with rivers.
You
brandished Your bow; You called for many arrows.
Selah You split the earth
with rivers.
The mountains saw thee, and they
trembled: the overflowing of the water passed by: the deep uttered his voice, and lifted up his hands on high.
The mountains saw You and
quaked; torrents of water swept by. The deep
roared with its voice and lifted its hands on high.
You marched across the earth
with fury; You
threshed the nations in wrath.
Thou wentest forth for the salvation of thy people, even for salvation
with thine
anointed; thou woundedst the head out of the house of the wicked, by discovering the foundation unto the neck.
Selah.
You went forth for the salvation of Your people, to save Your
anointed. You
crushed the head of the house of the wicked and
stripped him from head to
toe.
Selah With his own
spear You pierced his head, when his warriors stormed out to
scatter us,
gloating as though ready to secretly
devour the weak.
Thou
didst walk through the sea
with thine horses, through the
heap of great waters.
When I heard, my
belly trembled; my lips
quivered at the voice:
rottenness entered into my bones, and I
trembled in myself, that I might rest in the day of trouble: when he cometh up unto the people, he will
invade them
with his troops.
I heard and
trembled within; my lips
quivered at the sound. Decay entered my bones; I
trembled where I stood. Yet I must wait patiently for the day of distress to come upon the people who
invade us.
The LORD God is my strength, and he will make my feet like hinds’ feet, and he will make me to walk upon mine high places. To the chief singer on my stringed instruments.
GOD the Lord is my strength; He makes my feet like those of a deer; He makes me walk upon the heights! For the choirmaster. With stringed instruments.
I will
consume man and beast; I will
consume the fowls of the heaven, and the fishes of the sea, and the stumblingblocks
with the wicked; and I will cut off man from off the land, saith the LORD.
“I will
sweep away man and beast; I will
sweep away the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea, and the idols
with their wicked worshipers. I will cut off mankind from the face of the earth,” declares the LORD.
I will also stretch out mine hand upon Judah, and upon all the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and I will cut off the
remnant of
Baal from this place, and the name of the Chemarims
with the priests;
“I will stretch out My hand against Judah and against all who dwell in Jerusalem. I will cut off from this place every
remnant of
Baal, the names of the
idolatrous and pagan priests—
And it shall come to pass in the day of the LORD’S sacrifice, that I will
punish the princes, and the king’s children, and all such as are clothed
with strange
apparel.
“On the Day of the LORD’s sacrifice I will
punish the princes, the sons of the king, and all who are dressed in foreign
apparel.
In the same day also will I
punish all those that
leap on the
threshold, which fill their masters’ houses
with violence and
deceit.
And it shall come to pass at that time, that I will search Jerusalem
with candles, and
punish the men that are settled on their
lees: that say in their heart, The LORD will not do good, neither will he do evil.
And at that time I will search Jerusalem
with lamps and
punish the men settled in
complacency, who say to themselves, ‘The LORD will do nothing, either good or bad.’
