And the unicorns shall come down with them,
and the bullocks with the bulls;
and their land shall be
soaked with blood,
and their dust made fat with fatness.
And the wild oxen will fall with them, the young bulls with the strong ones. Their land will be
drenched with blood,
and their soil will be
soaked with fat.
For it is the day of the LORD’S
vengeance,
and the year of recompences for the controversy of
Zion.
And the streams thereof shall be turned into pitch,
and the dust thereof into
brimstone,
and the land thereof shall become burning pitch.
Edom’s streams will be turned to tar,
and her soil to sulfur; her land will become a
blazing pitch.
It shall not be
quenched night nor day; the smoke thereof shall go up for ever: from generation to generation it shall lie waste; none shall pass through it for ever
and ever.
It will not be
quenched—day or night. Its smoke will
ascend forever. From generation to generation it will lie
desolate; no one will ever again pass through it.
But the
cormorant and the
bittern shall possess it; the
owl also
and the
raven shall dwell in it:
and he shall stretch out upon it the line of confusion,
and the stones of
emptiness.
The desert
owl and screech owl will possess it,
and the great
owl and raven will dwell in it. The LORD will stretch out over
Edom a measuring line of
chaos and a
plumb line of destruction.
They shall call the nobles thereof to the kingdom, but none shall be there, and all her princes shall be nothing.
No nobles will be left to
proclaim a king,
and all her princes will come to nothing.
And thorns shall come up in her palaces,
nettles and brambles in the fortresses thereof:
and it shall be an
habitation of
dragons,
and a court for owls.
Her towers will be overgrown with thorns, her fortresses with thistles
and briers. She will become a
haunt for jackals, an abode for ostriches.
The wild beasts of the desert shall also meet with the wild beasts of the island,
and the
satyr shall cry to his fellow; the
screech owl also shall rest there,
and find for herself a place of rest.
The desert creatures will meet with
hyenas,
and one wild goat will call to another. There the night creature will settle
and find her place of
repose.
There shall the great
owl make her nest,
and lay,
and hatch,
and gather under her shadow: there shall the vultures also be gathered, every one with her
mate.
There the
owl will make her nest; she will lay
and hatch her eggs
and gather her
brood under her shadow. Even there the birds of prey will gather, each with its
mate.
Seek ye out of the book of the LORD,
and read: no one of these shall fail, none shall want her
mate: for my mouth it hath commanded,
and his spirit it hath gathered them.
Search
and read the
scroll of the LORD: Not one of these will go missing, not one will lack her
mate, because He has ordered it by His mouth,
and He will gather them by His Spirit.
And he hath cast the lot for them, and his hand hath divided it unto them by line: they shall possess it for ever, from generation to generation shall they dwell therein.
He has
allotted their portion; His hand has distributed it by measure. They will possess it
forever; they will dwell in it from generation to generation.
The wilderness
and the solitary place shall be
glad for them;
and the desert shall
rejoice,
and blossom as the rose.
The wilderness
and the land will be
glad; the desert will
rejoice and blossom like a rose.
Say to them that are of a fearful heart, Be strong, fear not: behold, your God will come with
vengeance, even God with a recompence; he will come
and save you.
Say to those with anxious hearts: “Be strong, do not fear! Behold, your God will come with
vengeance. With divine
retribution He will come to save you.”
Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened,
and the ears of the
deaf shall be unstopped.
Then the eyes of the blind will be opened
and the ears of the
deaf unstopped.
Then shall the
lame man
leap as an
hart,
and the tongue of the
dumb sing: for in the wilderness shall waters break out,
and streams in the desert.
Then the
lame will
leap like a deer
and the
mute tongue will
shout for joy. For waters will
gush forth in the wilderness,
and streams in the desert.
The
parched ground will become a
pool, the
thirsty land springs of water. In the
haunt where jackals once lay, there will be grass
and reeds
and papyrus.
And an
highway shall be there,
and a way,
and it shall be called The way of
holiness; the unclean shall not pass over it; but it shall be for those: the
wayfaring men, though fools, shall not
err therein.
And there will be a
highway called the Way of
Holiness. The unclean will not travel it— only those who walk in the Way—
and fools will not
stray onto it.
No lion shall be there, nor any
ravenous beast shall go up
thereon, it shall not be found there; but the redeemed shall walk there:
No lion will be there,
and no
vicious beast will go up on it. Such will not be found there, but the redeemed will walk upon it.
Now it came to pass in the
fourteenth year of king
Hezekiah, that
Sennacherib king of Assyria came up against all the defenced cities of Judah,
and took them.
Then came forth unto him Eliakim, Hilkiah’s son, which was over the house,
and Shebna the
scribe,
and Joah,
Asaph’s son, the recorder.
Then Eliakim son of Hilkiah the palace
administrator, Shebna the
scribe,
and Joah son of
Asaph the recorder, went out to him.
And Rabshakeh said unto them, Say ye now to
Hezekiah, Thus saith the great king, the king of Assyria, What confidence is this wherein thou trustest?
The
Rabshakeh said to them, “Tell
Hezekiah that this is what the great king, the king of Assyria, says: What is the basis of this confidence of yours?
I say, sayest thou, (but they are but vain words) I have counsel
and strength for war: now on whom
dost thou trust, that thou rebellest against me?
You claim to have a
strategy and strength for war, but these are empty words. In whom are you now trusting, that you have rebelled against me?
Lo, thou trustest in the staff of this broken reed, on Egypt;
whereon if a man
lean, it will go into his hand,
and pierce it: so is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all that trust in him.
Look now, you are trusting in Egypt, that
splintered reed of a staff that will
pierce the hand of
anyone who leans on it. Such is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who trust in him.
But if thou say to me, We trust in the LORD our God: is it not he, whose high places
and whose altars
Hezekiah hath taken away,
and said to Judah
and to Jerusalem, Ye shall worship before this altar?
But if you say to me, ‘We trust in the LORD our God,’ is He not the One whose high places
and altars
Hezekiah has removed, saying to Judah
and Jerusalem, ‘You must worship before this altar’?
Now therefore give pledges, I pray thee, to my master the king of Assyria, and I will give thee two thousand horses, if thou be able on thy part to set riders upon them.
Now, therefore, make a
bargain with my master, the king of Assyria. I will give you two thousand horses—if you can put riders on them!
How then
wilt thou turn away the face of one captain of the least of my master’s servants,
and put thy trust on Egypt for
chariots and for
horsemen?
For how can you
repel a single officer among the least of my master’s servants when you depend on Egypt for
chariots and horsemen?
And am I now come up without the LORD against this land to destroy it? the LORD said unto me, Go up against this land, and destroy it.
So now, was it apart from the LORD that I have come up against this land to destroy it? The LORD Himself said to me, ‘Go up against this land and destroy it.’”
Then said Eliakim
and Shebna
and Joah unto
Rabshakeh, Speak, I pray thee, unto thy servants in the
Syrian language; for we understand it:
and speak not to us in the Jews’ language, in the ears of the people that are on the wall.
Then Eliakim, Shebna,
and Joah said to the
Rabshakeh, “Please speak to your servants in
Aramaic, since we understand it. Do not speak to us in Hebrew in the hearing of the people on the wall.”
But
Rabshakeh said, Hath my master sent me to thy master
and to thee to speak these words? hath he not sent me to the men that sit upon the wall, that they may eat their own dung,
and drink their own
piss with you?
But the
Rabshakeh replied, “Has my master sent me to speak these words only to you
and your master,
and not to the men sitting on the wall, who are destined with you to eat their own dung
and drink their own
urine?”
Then
Rabshakeh stood,
and cried with a loud voice in the Jews’ language,
and said, Hear ye the words of the great king, the king of Assyria.
Then the
Rabshakeh stood
and called out loudly in Hebrew: “Hear the words of the great king, the king of Assyria!
Hearken not to
Hezekiah: for thus saith the king of Assyria, Make an agreement with me by a present,
and come out to me:
and eat ye every one of his vine,
and every one of his fig tree,
and drink ye every one the waters of his own
cistern;
Do not
listen to
Hezekiah, for this is what the king of Assyria says: Make peace with me
and come out to me. Then every one of you will eat from his own vine
and his own fig tree,
and drink water from his own
cistern,
Until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of corn and wine, a land of bread and vineyards.
until I come and take you away to a land like your own—a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards.
Where are the gods of
Hamath and Arphad? where are the gods of
Sepharvaim?
and have they delivered Samaria out of my hand?
Where are the gods of
Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of
Sepharvaim? Have they delivered Samaria from my hand?
But they held their peace, and answered him not a word: for the king’s commandment was, saying, Answer him not.
But the people remained silent
and did not answer a word, for
Hezekiah had commanded, “Do not answer him.”
Then came Eliakim, the son of Hilkiah, that was over the household,
and Shebna the
scribe,
and Joah, the son of
Asaph, the recorder, to
Hezekiah with their clothes rent,
and told him the words of
Rabshakeh.
And it came to pass, when king
Hezekiah heard it, that he rent his clothes,
and covered himself with
sackcloth,
and went into the house of the LORD.
On hearing this report, King
Hezekiah tore his clothes, put on
sackcloth,
and entered the house of the LORD.
And he sent Eliakim, who was over the household,
and Shebna the
scribe,
and the elders of the priests covered with
sackcloth, unto Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz.
And he sent Eliakim the palace
administrator, Shebna the
scribe,
and the leading priests, all wearing
sackcloth, to the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz
And they said unto him, Thus saith
Hezekiah, This day is a day of trouble,
and of
rebuke,
and of
blasphemy: for the children are come to the birth,
and there is not strength to bring forth.
to tell him, “This is what
Hezekiah says:
Today is a day of distress,
rebuke,
and disgrace; for children have come to the point of birth, but there is no strength to deliver them.
It may be the LORD thy God will hear the words of
Rabshakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master hath sent to reproach the living God,
and will reprove the words which the LORD thy God hath heard: wherefore lift up thy prayer for the
remnant that is left.
Perhaps the LORD your God will hear the words of the
Rabshakeh, whom his master the king of Assyria has sent to
defy the living God,
and He will
rebuke him for the words that the LORD your God has heard. Therefore lift up a prayer for the
remnant that still survives.”
And Isaiah said unto them, Thus shall ye say unto your master, Thus saith the LORD, Be not afraid of the words that thou hast heard,
wherewith the servants of the king of Assyria have
blasphemed me.
who replied, “Tell your master that this is what the LORD says: ‘Do not be afraid of the words you have heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have
blasphemed Me.
Behold, I will send a blast upon him, and he shall hear a rumour, and return to his own land; and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land.
Behold, I will put a spirit in him so that he will hear a
rumor and return to his own land, where I will cause him to fall by the sword.’”
When the
Rabshakeh heard that the king of Assyria had left
Lachish, he withdrew
and found the king fighting against
Libnah.
And he heard say concerning Tirhakah king of
Ethiopia, He is come forth to make war with thee.
And when he heard it, he sent messengers to
Hezekiah, saying,
Behold, thou hast heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands by destroying them utterly; and shalt thou be delivered?
Surely you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all the other countries,
devoting them to destruction. Will you then be
spared?
Have the gods of the nations delivered them which my fathers have destroyed, as Gozan,
and Haran,
and Rezeph,
and the children of
Eden which were in Telassar?
Did the gods of the nations destroyed by my fathers
rescue those nations—the gods of Gozan,
Haran,
and Rezeph,
and of the people of
Eden in Telassar?
Where is the king of
Hamath,
and the king of Arphad,
and the king of the city of
Sepharvaim, Hena,
and Ivah?
And Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers,
and read it:
and Hezekiah went up unto the house of the LORD,
and spread it before the LORD.
So
Hezekiah received the letter from the messengers, read it,
and went up to the house of the LORD
and spread it out before the LORD.
And Hezekiah prayed unto the LORD, saying,
O LORD of hosts, God of Israel, that dwellest between the cherubims, thou art the God, even thou alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth: thou hast made heaven and earth.
“O LORD of Hosts, God of Israel, enthroned above the
cherubim, You alone are God over all the kingdoms of the earth. You made the heavens
and the earth.
Incline thine ear, O LORD,
and hear; open thine eyes, O LORD,
and see:
and hear all the words of
Sennacherib, which hath sent to reproach the living God.
Incline Your ear, O LORD,
and hear; open Your eyes, O LORD,
and see.
Listen to all the words that
Sennacherib has sent to
defy the living God.
Of a truth, LORD, the kings of Assyria have laid waste all the nations, and their countries,
Truly, O LORD, the kings of Assyria have laid waste all these countries and their lands.
And have cast their gods into the fire: for they were no gods, but the work of men’s hands, wood and stone: therefore they have destroyed them.
They have cast their gods into the fire and destroyed them, for they were not gods, but only wood and stone—the work of human hands.
Now therefore, O LORD our God, save us from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that thou art the LORD, even thou only.
And now, O LORD our God, save us from his hand, so that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that You alone, O LORD, are God.”
This is the word which the LORD hath spoken concerning him; The virgin, the daughter of
Zion, hath
despised thee,
and laughed thee to
scorn; the daughter of Jerusalem hath
shaken her head at thee.
this is the word that the LORD has spoken against him: ‘The Virgin Daughter of
Zion despises you
and mocks you; the Daughter of Jerusalem shakes her head behind you.
Whom hast thou reproached
and blasphemed?
and against whom hast thou
exalted thy voice,
and lifted up thine eyes on high? even against the Holy One of Israel.
Whom have you
taunted and blasphemed? Against whom have you raised your voice
and lifted your eyes in pride? Against the Holy One of Israel!
By thy servants hast thou reproached the Lord,
and hast said, By the multitude of my
chariots am I come up to the height of the mountains, to the sides of
Lebanon;
and I will cut down the tall cedars thereof,
and the choice
fir trees thereof:
and I will enter into the height of his border,
and the forest of his
Carmel.
Through your servants you have
taunted the Lord,
and you have said: “With my many
chariots I have ascended to the heights of the mountains, to the remote peaks of
Lebanon. I have cut down its tallest cedars, the finest of its
cypresses. I have reached its
farthest heights, the densest of its forests.
I have
digged,
and drunk water;
and with the sole of my feet have I dried up all the rivers of the besieged places.
I have
dug wells
and drunk foreign waters. With the soles of my feet I have dried up all the streams of Egypt.”
Hast thou not heard long ago, how I have done it;
and of ancient times, that I have formed it? now have I brought it to pass, that thou shouldest be to lay waste defenced cities into
ruinous heaps.
Have you not heard? Long ago I ordained it; in days of old I
planned it. Now I have brought it to pass, that you should
crush fortified cities into piles of
rubble.
Therefore their inhabitants were of small power, they were dismayed
and confounded: they were as the grass of the field,
and as the green
herb, as the grass on the housetops,
and as corn blasted before it be grown up.
Therefore their inhabitants, devoid of power, are dismayed
and ashamed. They are like plants in the field, tender green shoots, grass on the rooftops,
scorched before it is grown.
But I know thy abode,
and thy going out,
and thy coming in,
and thy
rage against me.
But I know your sitting down, your going out
and coming in,
and your
raging against Me.
Because thy
rage against me,
and thy
tumult, is come up into mine ears, therefore will I put my hook in thy nose,
and my
bridle in thy lips,
and I will turn thee back by the way by which thou camest.
Because your
rage and arrogance against Me have reached My ears, I will put My hook in your nose
and My
bit in your mouth; I will send you back the way you came.’
And this shall be a sign unto thee, Ye shall eat this year such as groweth of itself;
and the second year that which springeth of the same:
and in the third year
sow ye,
and reap,
and plant vineyards,
and eat the fruit thereof.
And this will be a sign to you, O
Hezekiah: This year you will eat what grows on its own,
and in the second year what springs from the same. But in the third year you will
sow and reap; you will plant vineyards
and eat their fruit.
And the
remnant that is escaped of the house of Judah shall again take root
downward,
and bear fruit upward:
And the
surviving remnant of the house of Judah will again take root below
and bear fruit above.
For out of Jerusalem shall go forth a
remnant,
and they that escape out of mount
Zion: the zeal of the LORD of hosts shall do this.
For a
remnant will go forth from Jerusalem,
and survivors from Mount
Zion. The zeal of the LORD of Hosts will
accomplish this.
By the way that he came, by the same shall he return, and shall not come into this city, saith the LORD.
He will go back the way he came, and he will not enter this city,’ declares the LORD.
For I will defend this city to save it for mine own sake, and for my servant David’s sake.
‘I will defend this city and save it for My own sake and for the sake of My servant David.’”
Then the angel of the LORD went forth,
and smote in the camp of the Assyrians a hundred
and fourscore and five thousand:
and when they arose early in the morning, behold, they were all dead corpses.
Then the angel of the LORD went out and struck down 185,000 men in the camp of the Assyrians. When the people got up the next morning, there were all the dead bodies!
So
Sennacherib king of Assyria broke camp
and withdrew. He returned to
Nineveh and stayed there.
One day, while he was worshiping in the temple of his god
Nisroch, his sons
Adrammelech and Sharezer put him to the sword
and escaped to the land of
Ararat.
And his son Esar-haddon reigned in his place.
In those days was
Hezekiah sick unto death.
And Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz came unto him,
and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Set thine house in order: for thou shalt die,
and not live.
In those days
Hezekiah became
mortally ill. The prophet Isaiah son of Amoz came to him
and said, “This is what the LORD says: ‘Put your house in order, for you are about to die; you will not recover.’”
Then
Hezekiah turned his face toward the wall,
and prayed unto the LORD,
Then
Hezekiah turned his face to the wall
and prayed to the LORD,
And said, Remember now, O LORD, I
beseech thee, how I have walked before thee in truth
and with a perfect heart,
and have done that which is good in thy sight.
And Hezekiah wept sore.
saying, “Please, O LORD, remember how I have walked before You faithfully
and with wholehearted devotion; I have done what was good in Your sight.”
And Hezekiah wept bitterly.
Then came the word of the LORD to Isaiah, saying,
And the word of the LORD came to Isaiah, saying,
Go,
and say to
Hezekiah, Thus saith the LORD, the God of David thy father, I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears: behold, I will add unto thy days fifteen years.
“Go
and tell
Hezekiah that this is what the LORD, the God of your father David, says: ‘I have heard your prayer; I have seen your tears. Behold, I will add fifteen years to your life.
And I will deliver thee and this city out of the hand of the king of Assyria: and I will defend this city.
And I will deliver you and this city from the hand of the king of Assyria. I will defend this city.
And this shall be a sign unto thee from the LORD, that the LORD will do this thing that he hath spoken;
This will be a sign to you from the LORD that He will do what He has promised:
The writing of
Hezekiah king of Judah, when he had been sick,
and was recovered of his sickness:
This is a writing by
Hezekiah king of Judah after his illness
and recovery:
I said in the cutting off of my days, I shall go to the gates of the grave: I am deprived of the residue of my years.
I said, “In the prime of my life I must go through the gates of
Sheol and be deprived of the remainder of my years.”
Mine age is departed,
and is removed from me as a
shepherd’s tent: I have cut off like a
weaver my life: he will cut me off with pining sickness: from day even to night
wilt thou make an end of me.
My dwelling has been
picked up
and removed from me like a
shepherd’s tent. I have rolled up my life like a
weaver; He cuts me off from the
loom; from day until night You make an end of me.
What shall I say? he hath both spoken unto me, and himself hath done it: I shall go softly all my years in the bitterness of my soul.
What can I say? He has spoken to me,
and He Himself has done this. I will walk slowly all my years because of the
anguish of my soul.
O Lord, by these things men live,
and in all these things is the life of my spirit: so
wilt thou recover me,
and make me to live.
O Lord, by such things men live, and in all of them my spirit finds life. You have restored me to health and have let me live.
For Isaiah had said, Let them take a
lump of figs,
and lay it for a
plaister upon the
boil,
and he shall recover.
Now Isaiah had said, “Prepare a
lump of pressed figs
and apply it to the
boil,
and he will recover.”
Hezekiah also had said, What is the sign that I shall go up to the house of the LORD?
And Hezekiah had asked, “What will be the sign that I will go up to the house of the LORD?”
At that time Merodach-baladan, the son of Baladan, king of Babylon, sent letters
and a present to
Hezekiah: for he had heard that he had been sick,
and was recovered.
At that time Merodach-baladan son of Baladan king of Babylon sent letters
and a gift to
Hezekiah, for he had heard about
Hezekiah’s illness
and recovery.
And Hezekiah was
glad of them,
and shewed them the house of his precious things, the silver,
and the gold,
and the spices,
and the precious
ointment,
and all the house of his armour,
and all that was found in his treasures: there was nothing in his house, nor in all his dominion, that
Hezekiah shewed them not.
And Hezekiah welcomed the envoys
gladly and showed them what was in his
treasure house—the silver, the gold, the spices,
and the precious oil, as well as his entire
armory—all that was found in his storehouses. There was nothing in his palace or in all his dominion that
Hezekiah did not show them.
Then came Isaiah the prophet unto king
Hezekiah,
and said unto him, What said these men?
and from whence came they unto thee?
And Hezekiah said, They are come from a far country unto me, even from Babylon.
Then the prophet Isaiah went to King
Hezekiah and asked, “Where did those men come from,
and what did they say to you?” “They came to me from a distant land,”
Hezekiah replied, “from Babylon.”
Then said he, What have they seen in thine house?
And Hezekiah answered, All that is in mine house have they seen: there is nothing among my treasures that I have not shewed them.
“What have they seen in your palace?” Isaiah asked. “They have seen everything in my palace,” answered
Hezekiah. “There is nothing among my treasures that I did not show them.”
Behold, the days come, that all that is in thine house, and that which thy fathers have laid up in store until this day, shall be carried to Babylon: nothing shall be left, saith the LORD.
The time will surely come when everything in your palace and all that your fathers have stored up until this day will be carried off to Babylon. Nothing will be left, says the LORD.
And of thy sons that shall issue from thee, which thou shalt
beget, shall they take away;
and they shall be eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon.
And some of your descendants, your own flesh and blood, will be taken away to be eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon.”
Then said
Hezekiah to Isaiah, Good is the word of the LORD which thou hast spoken. He said moreover, For there shall be peace
and truth in my days.
But
Hezekiah said to Isaiah, “The word of the LORD that you have spoken is good.” For he thought, “At least there will be peace
and security in my lifetime.”
Speak ye
comfortably to Jerusalem,
and cry unto her, that her warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity is
pardoned: for she hath received of the LORD’S hand double for all her sins.
“Speak tenderly to Jerusalem,
and proclaim to her that her forced labor has been completed; her iniquity has been
pardoned. For she has received from the hand of the LORD double for all her sins.”
Every valley shall be
exalted,
and every mountain
and hill shall be made low:
and the
crooked shall be made straight,
and the rough places plain:
Every valley shall be lifted up,
and every mountain
and hill made low; the uneven ground will become smooth,
and the
rugged land a plain.
And the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.
And the glory of the LORD will be revealed, and all humanity together will see it. For the mouth of the LORD has spoken.”
The voice said, Cry.
And he said, What shall I cry? All flesh is grass,
and all the
goodliness thereof is as the flower of the field:
A voice says, “Cry out!” And I asked, “What should I cry out?” “All flesh is like grass, and all its glory like the flowers of the field.
The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: because the spirit of the LORD bloweth upon it: surely the people is grass.
The grass
withers and the flowers fall when the breath of the LORD blows on them; indeed, the people are grass.
The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.
The grass
withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God stands
forever.”
