hired out themselves for bread; and they that were
hungry ceased: so that the barren hath born seven; and she that hath many children is waxed feeble.
The well-fed
hire themselves out for food, but the
starving hunger no more. The barren woman gives
birth to seven, but she who has many sons pines away.

Phinehas’ wife, was with child, near to be delivered: and when she heard the

birth. When she heard the news of the capture of God’s ark and the deaths of her father-in-law and her husband, she
collapsed and gave
birth, for her labor pains overtook her.
And about the time of her death the women that stood by her said unto her, Fear not; for thou hast born a son. But she answered not, neither did she regard it.

birth to a son!” But she did not
respond or pay any
heed.
And the
Philistine said to David, Come to me, and I will give thy flesh unto the fowls of the air, and to the beasts of the field.
“Come here,” he called to David, “and I will give your flesh to the birds of the air and the beasts of the field!”
This day will the LORD deliver thee into mine hand; and I will
smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.
This day the LORD will deliver you into my hand. This day I will strike you down, cut off your head, and give the
carcasses of the Philistines to the
birds of the air and the creatures of the earth. Then the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel.

sheba his wife, and went in unto her, and lay with her: and she bare a son, and he called his name Solomon: and the LORD loved him.

And Rizpah the daughter of Aiah took
sackcloth, and spread it for her upon the rock, from the beginning of harvest until water dropped upon them out of heaven, and suffered neither the
birds of the air to rest on them by day, nor the beasts of the field by night.
And Rizpah the daughter of Aiah took
sackcloth and spread it out for herself on a rock. From the beginning of the harvest until the rain from heaven poured down on the bodies, she did not allow the
birds of the air to rest on them by day, nor the beasts of the field by night.
And the one woman said, O my lord, I and this woman dwell in one house; and I was delivered of a child with her in the house.
One woman said, “Please, my lord, this woman and I live in the same house, and I gave birth while she was in the house.
And it came to pass the third day after that I was delivered, that this woman was delivered also: and we were together; there was no stranger with us in the house, save we two in the house.
On the third day after I gave
birth, this woman also had a
baby. We were alone, with no one in the house but the two of us.
And he spake of trees, from the
cedar tree that is in
Lebanon even unto the
hyssop that springeth out of the wall: he spake also of beasts, and of fowl, and of
creeping things, and of fishes.
He spoke of trees, from the
cedar in
Lebanon to the
hyssop growing in the wall, and he taught about animals,
birds, reptiles, and fish.

Him that dieth of
Jeroboam in the city shall the dogs eat; and him that dieth in the field shall the fowls of the air eat: for the LORD hath spoken it.
Anyone belonging to
Jeroboam who dies in the city will be eaten by dogs, and
anyone who dies in the field will be eaten by the
birds of the air.’ For the LORD has spoken.
Him that dieth of
Baasha in the city shall the dogs eat; and him that dieth of his in the fields shall the fowls of the air eat.
Anyone belonging to
Baasha who dies in the city will be eaten by dogs, and
anyone who dies in the field will be eaten by the
birds of the air.”
Him that dieth of
Ahab in the city the dogs shall eat; and him that dieth in the field shall the fowls of the air eat.
Anyone belonging to
Ahab who dies in the city will be eaten by dogs, and
anyone who dies in the field will be eaten by the
birds of the air.”

birth to a son, just as

And they said unto him, Thus saith
Hezekiah, This day is a day of trouble, and of
rebuke, and
blasphemy: for the children are come to the
birth, and there is not strength to bring forth.
to tell him, “This is what
Hezekiah says:
Today is a day of distress,
rebuke, and disgrace; for children have come to the point of
birth, but there is no strength to deliver them.
And his wife Jehudijah bare Jered the father of Gedor, and
Heber the father of Socho, and Jekuthiel the father of Zanoah. And these are the sons of Bithiah the daughter of Pharaoh, which Mered took.
And Mered’s wife Bithiah gave
birth to
Miriam,
Shammai, and Ishbah the father of Eshtemoa. These were the children of Pharaoh’s daughter Bithiah. Mered also took a
Judean wife, who gave
birth to Jered the father of Gedor,
Heber the father of Soco, and Jekuthiel the father of Zanoah.
And at Beth-marcaboth, and Hazar-susim, and at Beth-birei, and at Shaaraim. These were their cities unto the reign of David.
Beth-marcaboth, Hazar-susim, Beth-biri, and Shaaraim. These were their cities until the reign of David.
For Judah prevailed above his brethren, and of him came the chief ruler; but the
birthright was Joseph’s:)
And though Judah prevailed over his brothers and a ruler came from him, the
birthright belonged to Joseph.
And Maachah the wife of Machir bare a son, and she called his name Peresh; and the name of his brother was Sheresh; and his sons were Ulam and Rakem.

Heber, and Malchiel, who is the father of
Birzavith.
The sons of Beriah:
Heber, as well as Malchiel, who was the father of
Birzaith.
After this opened Job his mouth, and
cursed his day.
After this, Job opened his mouth and
cursed the day of his
birth.
Let the day perish wherein I was born, and the night in which it was said, There is a man child conceived.
“May the day of my birth perish, and the night it was said, ‘A boy is conceived.’
Why died I not from the
womb? why did I not give up the ghost when I came out of the
belly?
Why did I not perish at
birth; why did I not die as I came from the
womb?
Or as an hidden untimely birth I had not been; as infants which never saw light.
Or why was I not hidden like a
stillborn child, like an infant who never sees
daylight?
But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee; and the fowls of the air, and they shall tell thee:
But ask the animals, and they will
instruct you; ask the
birds of the air, and they will tell you.
They conceive mischief, and bring forth vanity, and their
belly prepareth
deceit.
There is a path which no fowl knoweth, and which the
vulture’s eye hath not seen:
No
bird of prey knows that path; no
falcon’s eye has seen it.
Seeing it is
hid from the eyes of all living, and kept close from the fowls of the air.
It is hidden from the eyes of every living thing and concealed from the birds of the air.
Who teacheth us more than the beasts of the earth, and maketh us wiser than the fowls of heaven?
who teaches us more than the beasts of the earth and makes us wiser than the birds of the air?’
From whose
womb does the ice
emerge? Who gives
birth to the
frost from heaven,
Knowest thou the time when the wild goats of the rock bring forth? or canst thou mark when the hinds do
calve?
“Do you know when mountain goats give
birth? Have you watched the
doe bear her
fawn?
Canst thou number the months that they fulfil? or knowest thou the time when they bring forth?
Can you count the months they are
pregnant? Do you know the time they give
birth?
Wilt thou play with him as with a
bird? or
wilt thou bind him for thy maidens?
Can you
pet him like a
bird or put him on a
leash for your maidens?
Behold, he travaileth with iniquity, and hath conceived mischief, and brought forth
falsehood.
Behold, the wicked man travails with evil; he conceives trouble and
births falsehood.
The fowl of the air, and the fish of the sea, and
whatsoever passeth through the paths of the seas.
the
birds of the air and the fish of the sea, all that
swim the paths of the seas.
In the LORD put I my trust: How say ye to my soul,
Flee as a
bird to your mountain?
In the LORD I take refuge. How then can you say to me: “
Flee like a
bird to your mountain!
I was cast upon thee from the
womb: thou art my God from my mother’s
belly.
From
birth I was cast upon You; from my mother’s
womb You have been my God.
I know all the fowls of the mountains: and the wild beasts of the field are mine.
I know every bird in the mountains, and the creatures of the field are Mine.
As a
snail which melteth, let every one of them pass away: like the untimely
birth of a woman, that they may not see the sun.
Like a
slug that dissolves in its
slime, like a woman’s
stillborn child, may they never see the sun.
By thee have I been
holden up from the
womb: thou art he that took me out of my mother’s
bowels: my praise shall be continually of thee.
I have
leaned on You since
birth; You pulled me from my mother’s
womb. My praise is always for You.
He rained flesh also upon them as dust, and
feathered fowls like as the sand of the sea:
He rained meat on them like dust, and winged birds like the sand of the sea.
The dead bodies of thy servants have they given to be meat unto the fowls of the heaven, the flesh of thy saints unto the beasts of the earth.
They have given the corpses of Your servants as food to the birds of the air, the flesh of Your saints to the beasts of the earth.
I watch, and am as a
sparrow alone upon the house top.
I lie
awake; I am like a
lone bird on a housetop.
By them shall the fowls of the heaven have their
habitation, which sing among the branches.
The birds of the air nest beside the springs; they sing among the branches.
Where the
birds make their nests: as for the
stork, the
fir trees are her house.
where the
birds build their nests; the
stork makes her home in the
cypresses.
Our soul is escaped as a
bird out of the
snare of the fowlers: the
snare is broken, and we are escaped.
We have escaped like a
bird from the
snare of the fowler; the net is
torn, and we have
slipped away.
Beasts, and all cattle;
creeping things, and flying fowl:
wild animals and all cattle,
crawling creatures and flying
birds,
Surely in vain the net is spread in the sight of any bird.
How
futile it is to spread the net where any
bird can see it!
Deliver
thyself as a
roe from the hand of the hunter, and as a
bird from the hand of the fowler.
Free
yourself, like a
gazelle from the hand of the hunter, like a
bird from the
snare of the fowler.
Till a
dart strike through his liver; as a
bird hasteth to the
snare, and knoweth not that it is for his life.
until an
arrow pierces his liver, like a
bird darting into a
snare— not knowing it will cost him his life.
Thy father and thy mother shall be
glad, and she that bare thee shall
rejoice.
May your father and mother be
glad, and may she who gave you
birth rejoice!
As the
bird by wandering, as the
swallow by flying, so the
curse causeless shall not come.
As a bird that wandereth from her nest, so is a man that wandereth from his place.
Like a bird that strays from its nest is a man who wanders from his home.
If a man
beget an hundred children, and live many years, so that the days of his years be many, and his soul be not filled with good, and also that he have no burial; I say, that an untimely
birth is better than he.
A man may father a hundred children and live for many years; yet no matter how long he lives, if he is unsatisfied with his prosperity and does not even receive a proper burial, I say that a
stillborn child is better off than he.
A good name is better than precious
ointment; and the day of death than the day of one’s
birth.
A good name is better than fine
perfume, and one’s day of death is better than his day of
birth.
For man also knoweth not his time: as the fishes that are taken in an evil net, and as the
birds that are caught in the
snare; so are the sons of men
snared in an evil time, when it falleth suddenly upon them.
For surely no man knows his time: Like fish caught in a cruel net or
birds trapped in a
snare, so men are ensnared in an evil time that suddenly falls upon them.
Curse not the king, no not in thy thought; and
curse not the rich in thy
bedchamber: for a
bird of the air shall carry the voice, and that which hath wings shall tell the matter.
Do not
curse the king even in your thoughts, or
curse the rich even in your
bedroom, for a
bird of the air may carry your words, and a winged creature may report your speech.
And the doors shall be shut in the streets, when the sound of the
grinding is low, and he shall rise up at the voice of the
bird, and all the daughters of musick shall be brought low;
when the doors to the street are shut and the sound of the mill fades away, when one rises at the sound of a
bird and all the daughters of song grow
faint,
The flowers appear on the earth; the time of the singing of
birds is come, and the voice of the
turtle is heard in our land;
The flowers have appeared in the
countryside; the season of singing has come, and the
cooing of turtledoves is heard in our land.
Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name
Immanuel.
Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin will be with child and will give
birth to a son, and will call Him
Immanuel.
And I went unto the
prophetess; and she conceived, and bare a son. Then said the LORD to me, Call his name Maher-shalal-
hash-baz.
And I had relations with the
prophetess, and she conceived and gave
birth to a son. The LORD said to me, “Name him Maher-shalal-
hash-baz.
For it shall be, that, as a wandering
bird cast out of the nest, so the daughters of Moab shall be at the fords of
Arnon.
Like
fluttering birds pushed out of the nest, so are the daughters of Moab at the fords of the
Arnon:
They shall be left together unto the fowls of the mountains, and to the beasts of the earth: and the fowls shall summer upon them, and all the beasts of the earth shall winter upon them.
They will all be left to the mountain birds of prey, and to the beasts of the land. The birds will feed on them in summer, and all the wild animals in winter.
Be thou
ashamed, O Zidon: for the sea hath spoken, even the strength of the sea, saying, I
travail not, nor bring forth children, neither do I
nourish up young men, nor bring up virgins.
Be
ashamed, O
Sidon, the
stronghold of the sea, for the sea has spoken: “I have not been in labor or given
birth. I have not raised young men or brought up young women.”
Like as a woman with child, that draweth near the time of her
delivery, is in pain, and crieth out in her pangs; so have we been in thy sight, O LORD.
As a woman with child about to give
birth writhes and
cries out in pain, so were we in Your presence, O LORD.
We have been with child, we have been in pain, we have as it were brought forth wind; we have not wrought any
deliverance in the earth; neither have the inhabitants of the world fallen.
We were with child; we
writhed in pain; but we gave
birth to wind. We have given no salvation to the earth, nor brought any life into the world.
As birds flying, so will the LORD of hosts defend Jerusalem; defending also he will deliver it; and passing over he will preserve it.
Like
birds hovering overhead, so the LORD of Hosts will protect Jerusalem. He will shield it and deliver it; He will pass over it and preserve it.”
Ye shall conceive
chaff, ye shall bring forth
stubble: your breath, as fire, shall
devour you.
There shall the great
owl make her nest, and lay, and
hatch, and gather under her shadow: there shall the vultures also be gathered, every one with her
mate.
There the
owl will make her nest; she will lay and
hatch her eggs and gather her
brood under her shadow. Even there the
birds of prey will gather, each with its
mate.
And they said unto him, Thus saith
Hezekiah, This day is a day of trouble, and of
rebuke, and of
blasphemy: for the children are come to the
birth, and there is not strength to bring forth.
to tell him, “This is what
Hezekiah says:
Today is a day of distress,
rebuke, and disgrace; for children have come to the point of
birth, but there is no strength to deliver them.
Hearken unto me, O house of Jacob, and all the
remnant of the house of Israel, which are borne by me from the
belly, which are carried from the
womb:
“
Listen to Me, O house of Jacob, all the
remnant of the house of Israel, who have been sustained from the
womb, carried along since
birth.
Calling a
ravenous bird from the east, the man that executeth my counsel from a far country:
yea, I have spoken it, I will also bring it to pass; I have purposed it, I will also do it.
I
summon a
bird of prey from the east, a man for My purpose from a far-off land. Truly I have spoken, and truly I will bring it to pass. I have
planned it, and I will surely do it.
You have never heard; you have never understood; for a long time your ears have not been open. For I knew how
deceitful you are; you have been called a
rebel from
birth.
Look unto Abraham your father, and unto
Sarah that bare you: for I called him alone, and blessed him, and increased him.
Look to Abraham your father, and to
Sarah who gave you
birth. When I called him, he was but one; then I blessed him and multiplied him.
None calleth for justice, nor any pleadeth for truth: they trust in vanity, and speak lies; they conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity.
No one calls for justice; no one pleads his case
honestly. They
rely on empty pleas; they tell lies; they conceive mischief and give
birth to iniquity.
Before she
travailed, she brought forth; before her pain came, she was delivered of a man child.
“Before she was in labor, she gave birth; before she was in pain, she delivered a boy.
Who hath heard such a thing? who hath seen such things? Shall the earth be made to bring forth in one day? or shall a nation be born at once? for as soon as
Zion travailed, she brought forth her children.
Who has heard of such as this? Who has seen such things? Can a country be born in a day or a nation be delivered in an instant? Yet as soon as
Zion was in labor, she gave
birth to her children.
Shall I bring to the
birth, and not cause to bring forth? saith the LORD: shall I cause to bring forth, and shut the
womb? saith thy God.
Shall I bring a
baby to the point of
birth and not deliver it?” says the LORD. “Or will I who deliver close the
womb?” says your God.
Saying to a stock, Thou art my father; and to a stone, Thou hast brought me forth: for they have turned their back unto me, and not their face: but in the time of their trouble they will say, Arise, and save us.
say to a tree, ‘You are my father,’ and to a stone, ‘You gave me
birth.’ For they have turned their backs to Me and not their faces, yet in the time of trouble they
beg, ‘Rise up and save us!’
I
beheld, and, lo, there was no man, and all the
birds of the heavens were fled.
I looked, and no man was left; all the birds of the air had fled.
As a
cage is full of
birds, so are their houses full of
deceit: therefore they are become great, and
waxen rich.
Like cages full of
birds, so their houses are full of
deceit. Therefore they have become powerful and rich.
And the carcases of this people shall be meat for the fowls of the heaven, and for the beasts of the earth; and none shall
fray them away.
The corpses of this people will become food for the
birds of the air and the beasts of the earth, and there will be no one to
scare them away.
For the mountains will I take up a
weeping and
wailing, and for the habitations of the wilderness a
lamentation, because they are burned up, so that none can pass through them; neither can men hear the voice of the cattle; both the fowl of the heavens and the beast are fled; they are gone.
I will take up a
weeping and
wailing for the mountains, a
dirge over the wilderness pasture, for they have been
scorched so no one passes through, and the lowing of cattle is not heard. Both the
birds of the air and the beasts have fled; they have gone away.
How long shall the land
mourn, and the herbs of every field wither, for the wickedness of them that dwell therein? the beasts are consumed, and the
birds; because they said, He shall not see our last end.
How long will the land
mourn and the grass of every field be
withered? Because of the evil of its residents, the animals and
birds have been swept away, for the people have said, “He cannot see what our end will be.”
Is not My inheritance to Me like a
speckled bird of prey with other
birds of prey circling against her? Go, gather all the beasts of the field; bring them to
devour her.
And I will
appoint over them four kinds, saith the LORD: the sword to
slay, and the dogs to
tear, and the fowls of the heaven, and the beasts of the earth, to
devour and destroy.
I will
appoint over them four kinds of destroyers, declares the LORD: the sword to kill, the dogs to
drag away, and the
birds of the air and beasts of the earth to
devour and destroy.
They shall die of
grievous deaths; they shall not be
lamented; neither shall they be buried; but they shall be as dung upon the face of the earth: and they shall be consumed by the sword, and by famine; and their carcases shall be meat for the fowls of heaven, and for the beasts of the earth.
“They will die from deadly diseases. They will not be
mourned or buried, but will lie like dung on the ground. They will be finished off by sword and famine, and their corpses will become food for the
birds of the air and beasts of the earth.”
And I will make void the counsel of Judah and Jerusalem in this place; and I will cause them to fall by the sword before their enemies, and by the hands of them that seek their lives: and their carcases will I give to be meat for the fowls of the heaven, and for the beasts of the earth.
And in this place I will ruin the plans of Judah and Jerusalem. I will make them fall by the sword before their enemies, by the hands of those who seek their lives, and I will give their
carcasses as food to the
birds of the air and the beasts of the earth.
And I will cast thee out, and thy mother that bare thee, into another country, where ye were not born; and there shall ye die.
I will
hurl you and the mother who gave you
birth into another land, where neither of you were born—and there you both will die.
Ask ye now, and see whether a man
doth travail with child? wherefore do I see every man with his hands on his loins, as a woman in
travail, and all faces are turned into paleness?
Ask now, and see: Can a male give birth? Why then do I see every man with his hands on his stomach like a woman in labor and every face turned pale?
I will even give them into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of them that seek their life: and their dead bodies shall be for meat unto the fowls of the heaven, and to the beasts of the earth.
I will deliver into the hands of their enemies who seek their lives. Their corpses will become food for the birds of the air and the beasts of the earth.
He made many to fall,
yea, one fell upon another: and they said, Arise, and let us go again to our own people, and to the land of our
nativity, from the
oppressing sword.
They continue to
stumble; indeed, they have fallen over one another. They say, ‘Get up! Let us return to our people and to the land of our
birth, away from the sword of the
oppressor.’
Mine enemies
chased me
sore, like a
bird, without cause.
Without cause my enemies
hunted me like a
bird.
Wherefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against your
pillows,
wherewith ye there
hunt the souls to make them fly, and I will
tear them from your arms, and will let the souls go, even the souls that ye
hunt to make them fly.
Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: See, I am against the magic charms with which you
ensnare souls like
birds, and I will
tear them from your arms. So I will free the souls you have ensnared like
birds.
