But they
hearkened not, nor inclined their ear,
but walked in the counsels and in the imagination of their evil heart, and went backward, and not forward.
Yet they did not
listen or
incline their ear,
but they followed the
stubborn inclinations of their own evil hearts. They went backward and not forward.
Yet they
hearkened not unto me, nor inclined their ear,
but hardened their neck: they did worse than their fathers.
Yet they would not
listen to Me or
incline their ear,
but they
stiffened their necks and did more evil than their fathers.
Therefore thou shalt speak all these words unto them;
but they will not
hearken to thee: thou shalt also call unto them;
but they will not answer thee.
When you tell them all these things, they will not
listen to you. When you call to them, they will not answer.
But thou shalt say unto them, This is a nation that obeyeth not the voice of the LORD their God, nor receiveth correction: truth is perished, and is cut off from their mouth.
Therefore you must say to them, ‘This is the nation that would not
listen to the voice of the LORD their God and would not receive correction. Truth has perished; it has disappeared from their lips.
Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that it shall no more be called
Tophet, nor the valley of the son of
Hinnom,
but the valley of slaughter: for they shall
bury in
Tophet, till there be no place.
So behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when this place will no longer be called Topheth and the Valley of
Hinnom,
but the Valley of Slaughter. For they will
bury the dead in Topheth until there is no more room.
And they shall spread them before the sun, and the moon, and all the host of heaven, whom they have loved, and whom they have served, and after whom they have walked, and whom they have sought, and whom they have worshipped: they shall not be gathered, nor be buried; they shall be for dung upon the face of the earth.
They will be exposed to the sun and moon, and to all the host of heaven which they have loved, served, followed, consulted, and worshiped. Their bones will not be gathered up or buried, but will become like dung lying on the ground.
I
hearkened and heard,
but they spake not
aright: no man
repented him of his wickedness, saying, What have I done? every one turned to his course, as the horse rusheth into the battle.
I have
listened and heard; they do not speak what is right. No one repents of his wickedness, asking, ‘What have I done?’
Everyone has pursued his own course like a horse charging into battle.
Yea, the
stork in the heaven knoweth her appointed times; and the
turtle and the
crane and the
swallow observe the time of their coming;
but my people know not the judgment of the LORD.
Even the
stork in the sky knows her appointed seasons. The
turtledove, the swift, and the
thrush keep their time of
migration,
but My people do not know the requirements of the LORD.
We looked for peace, but no good came; and for a time of health, and behold trouble!
We hoped for peace,
but no good has come, for a time of
healing,
but there was only terror.
The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved.
“The harvest has passed, the summer has ended, but we have not been saved.”
And they bend their tongues like their bow for lies:
but they are not
valiant for the truth upon the earth; for they proceed from evil to evil, and they know not me, saith the LORD.
“They bend their tongues like bows; lies prevail over truth in the land. For they proceed from evil to evil, and they do not take Me into account,” declares the LORD.
Their tongue is as an
arrow shot out; it speaketh
deceit: one speaketh
peaceably to his neighbour with his mouth,
but in heart he layeth his wait.
Their tongues are deadly arrows; they speak
deception. With his mouth a man speaks peace to his
neighbor,
but in his heart he sets a
trap for him.
But have walked after the imagination of their own heart, and after
Baalim, which their fathers taught them:
Instead, they have followed the
stubbornness of their hearts and gone after the Baals, as their fathers taught them.”
But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the LORD which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the LORD.
But let him who boasts
boast in this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the LORD, who exercises loving devotion, justice and righteousness on the earth— for I delight in these things,” declares the LORD.
They are upright as the palm tree, but speak not: they must needs be borne, because they cannot go. Be not afraid of them; for they cannot do evil, neither also is it in them to do good.
Like scarecrows in a
cucumber patch, their idols cannot speak. They must be carried because they cannot walk. Do not fear them, for they can do no
harm, and neither can they do any good.”
But they are altogether senseless and
foolish,
instructed by worthless idols made of wood!
But the LORD is the true God, he is the living God, and an
everlasting king: at his wrath the earth shall
tremble, and the nations shall not be able to
abide his
indignation.
But the LORD is the true God; He is the living God and eternal King. The earth quakes at His wrath, and the nations cannot
endure His
indignation.
Woe is me for my
hurt! my wound is
grievous:
but I said, Truly this is a grief, and I must bear it.
Woe to me because of my brokenness; my wound is
grievous!
But I said, “This is truly my sickness, and I must bear it.”
O LORD, correct me, but with judgment; not in thine anger, lest thou bring me to nothing.
Correct me, O LORD, but only with justice— not in Your anger, or You will bring me to nothing.
Yet they obeyed not, nor inclined their ear, but walked every one in the imagination of their evil heart: therefore I will bring upon them all the words of this covenant, which I commanded them to do; but they did them not.
Yet they would not obey or
incline their ears,
but each one followed the
stubbornness of his evil heart. So I brought on them all the curses of this covenant I had commanded them to follow
but they did not keep.”
Therefore thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will bring evil upon them, which they shall not be able to escape; and though they shall cry unto me, I will not
hearken unto them.
Therefore this is what the LORD says: ‘I am about to bring upon them a
disaster that they cannot escape. They will cry out to Me,
but I will not
listen to them.
Then shall the cities of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem go, and cry unto the gods unto whom they offer incense: but they shall not save them at all in the time of their trouble.
Then the cities of Judah and the residents of Jerusalem will go and cry out to the gods to which they have been burning incense,
but these gods certainly will not save them in their time of
disaster.
The LORD called thy name, A green olive tree, fair, and of goodly fruit: with the noise of a great
tumult he hath
kindled fire upon it, and the branches of it are broken.
The LORD once called you a flourishing olive tree, beautiful with well-formed fruit.
But with a mighty
roar He will set it on fire, and its branches will be consumed.
But I was like a lamb or an ox that is brought to the slaughter; and I knew not that they had devised devices against me, saying, Let us destroy the tree with the fruit thereof, and let us cut him off from the land of the living, that his name may be no more remembered.
For I was like a gentle lamb led to slaughter; I did not know that they had
plotted against me: “Let us destroy the tree with its fruit; let us cut him off from the land of the living, that his name may be remembered no more.”
But, O LORD of hosts, that judgest righteously, that triest the
reins and the heart, let me see thy
vengeance on them: for unto thee have I revealed my cause.
O LORD of Hosts, who judges righteously, who examines the heart and mind, let me see Your
vengeance upon them, for to You I have committed my cause.
Thou hast planted them,
yea, they have taken root: they grow,
yea, they bring forth fruit: thou art near in their mouth, and far from their
reins.
You planted them, and they have taken root. They have grown and produced fruit. You are ever on their lips, but far from their hearts.
But thou, O LORD, knowest me: thou hast seen me, and tried mine heart toward thee: pull them out like sheep for the slaughter, and prepare them for the day of slaughter.
But You know me, O LORD; You see me and test my heart toward You.
Drag away the wicked like sheep to the slaughter and set them apart for the day of
carnage.
They have made it
desolate, and being
desolate it mourneth unto me; the whole land is made
desolate, because no man layeth it to heart.
They have made it a
desolation;
desolate before Me, it mourns. All the land is laid waste,
but no man takes it to heart.
They have sown wheat,
but shall
reap thorns: they have put themselves to pain,
but shall not profit: and they shall be
ashamed of your revenues because of the fierce anger of the LORD.
They have sown wheat
but harvested thorns. They have exhausted themselves to no
avail. Bear the shame of your harvest because of the fierce anger of the LORD.”
And it shall come to pass, after that I have
plucked them out I will return, and have
compassion on them, and will bring them again, every man to his
heritage, and every man to his land.
But after I have uprooted them, I will once again have
compassion on them and return each one to his inheritance and to his land.
But if they will not obey, I will utterly
pluck up and destroy that nation, saith the LORD.
But if they will not obey, then I will
uproot that nation; I will
uproot it and destroy it, declares the LORD.”
Thus saith the LORD unto me, Go and get thee a linen
girdle, and put it upon thy loins, and put it not in water.
This is what the LORD said to me: “Go and
buy yourself a linen loincloth and put it around your
waist,
but do not let it touch water.”
Then I went to Euphrates, and
digged, and took the
girdle from the place where I had
hid it: and, behold, the
girdle was
marred, it was profitable for nothing.
So I went to Perath and
dug up the loincloth, and I took it from the place where I had hidden it.
But now it was ruined—of no use at all.
For as the
girdle cleaveth to the loins of a man, so have I caused to
cleave unto me the whole house of Israel and the whole house of Judah, saith the LORD; that they might be unto me for a people, and for a name, and for a praise, and for a glory:
but they would not hear.
For just as a loincloth clings to a man’s
waist, so I have made the whole house of Israel and the whole house of Judah
cling to Me, declares the LORD, so that they might be My people for My
renown and praise and glory.
But they did not
listen.
And I will
dash them one against another, even the fathers and the sons together, saith the LORD: I will not
pity, nor
spare, nor have mercy,
but destroy them.
I will
smash them against one another, fathers and sons alike, declares the LORD. I will allow no mercy or
pity or
compassion to keep Me from destroying them.’”
Give glory to the LORD your God, before he cause darkness, and before your feet
stumble upon the dark mountains, and, while ye look for light, he turn it into the shadow of death, and make it gross darkness.
Give glory to the LORD your God before He brings darkness, before your feet
stumble on the
dusky mountains. You wait for light,
but He turns it into deep
gloom and thick darkness.
But if ye will not hear it, my soul shall
weep in secret places for your pride; and mine eye shall
weep sore, and run down with tears, because the LORD’S flock is carried away
captive.
But if you do not
listen, I will
weep in secret because of your pride. My eyes will overflow with tears, because the LORD’s flock has been taken
captive.
And their nobles have sent their little ones to the waters: they came to the pits, and found no water; they returned with their vessels empty; they were
ashamed and confounded, and covered their heads.
The nobles send their servants for water; they go to the cisterns,
but find no water; their jars return empty. They are
ashamed and
humiliated; they cover their heads.
O the hope of Israel, the saviour thereof in time of trouble, why shouldest thou be as a stranger in the land, and as a
wayfaring man that turneth aside to
tarry for a night?
O Hope of Israel, its
Savior in times of distress, why are You like a stranger in the land, like a traveler who stays
but a night?
When they fast, I will not hear their cry; and when they offer burnt offering and an
oblation, I will not accept them:
but I will
consume them by the sword, and by the famine, and by the
pestilence.
Although they may fast, I will not
listen to their cry; although they may offer burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them. Instead, I will finish them off by sword and famine and plague.”
Then said I,
Ah, Lord GOD! behold, the prophets say unto them, Ye shall not see the sword, neither shall ye have famine;
but I will give you
assured peace in this place.
“
Ah, Lord GOD!” I replied, “Look, the prophets are telling them, ‘You will not see the sword or suffer famine,
but I will give you lasting peace in this place.’”
Hast thou utterly rejected Judah? hath thy soul
lothed Zion? why hast thou
smitten us, and there is no
healing for us? we looked for peace, and there is no good; and for the time of
healing, and behold trouble!
Have You rejected Judah completely? Do You
despise Zion? Why have You
stricken us so that we are beyond
healing? We hoped for peace,
but no good has come, and for the time of
healing,
but there was only terror.
Therefore thus saith the LORD, If thou return, then will I bring thee again, and thou shalt stand before me: and if thou take forth the precious from the
vile, thou shalt be as my mouth: let them return unto thee;
but return not thou unto them.
Therefore this is what the LORD says: “If you return, I will restore you; you will stand in My presence. And if you speak words that are noble instead of worthless, you will be My
spokesman. It is they who must turn to you,
but you must not turn to them.
And I will make thee unto this people a
fenced brasen wall: and they shall fight against thee,
but they shall not prevail against thee: for I am with thee to save thee and to deliver thee, saith the LORD.
Then I will make you a wall to this people, a fortified wall of bronze; they will fight against you but will not overcome you, for I am with you to save and deliver you, declares the LORD.
They shall die of
grievous deaths; they shall not be
lamented; neither shall they be buried;
but they shall be as dung upon the face of the earth: and they shall be consumed by the sword, and by famine; and their carcases shall be meat for the fowls of heaven, and for the beasts of the earth.
“They will die from deadly diseases. They will not be
mourned or buried,
but will lie like dung on the ground. They will be finished off by sword and famine, and their corpses will become food for the birds of the air and beasts of the earth.”
But, The LORD liveth, that brought up the children of Israel from the land of the north, and from all the lands
whither he had driven them: and I will bring them again into their land that I gave unto their fathers.
Instead they will say, ‘As surely as the LORD lives, who brought the Israelites up out of the land of the north and all the other lands to which He had banished them.’ For I will return them to their land that I gave to their forefathers.
Behold, I will send for many fishers, saith the LORD, and they shall fish them; and after will I send for many hunters, and they shall
hunt them from every mountain, and from every hill, and out of the holes of the rocks.
But for now I will send for many
fishermen, declares the LORD, and they will catch them. After that I will send for many hunters, and they will
hunt them down on every mountain and hill, even from the clefts of the rocks.
O LORD, my strength, and my fortress, and my refuge in the day of
affliction, the Gentiles shall come unto thee from the ends of the earth, and shall say, Surely our fathers have inherited lies, vanity, and things wherein there is no profit.
O LORD, my strength and my fortress, my refuge in the day of distress, the nations will come to You from the ends of the earth, and they will say, “Our fathers inherited nothing but lies, worthless idols of no benefit at all.
For he shall be like the
heath in the desert, and shall not see when good cometh;
but shall inhabit the
parched places in the wilderness, in a salt land and not inhabited.
He will be like a
shrub in the desert; he will not see when prosperity comes. He will dwell in the
parched places of the desert, in a salt land where no one lives.
Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD, and whose hope the LORD is.
But blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in Him.
For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh,
but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of
drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.
He is like a tree planted by the waters that sends out its roots toward the stream. It does not fear when the heat comes, and its leaves are always green. It does not
worry in a year of
drought, nor does it cease to produce fruit.
As for me, I have not
hastened from being a
pastor to follow thee: neither have I desired the
woeful day; thou knowest: that which came out of my lips was right before thee.
But I have not run away from being Your
shepherd; I have not desired the day of
despair. You know that the
utterance of my lips was spoken in Your presence.
Let them be confounded that
persecute me,
but let not me be confounded: let them be dismayed,
but let not me be dismayed: bring upon them the day of evil, and destroy them with double destruction.
Let my persecutors be put to shame,
but do not let me be put to shame. Let them be
terrified,
but do not let me be
terrified. Bring upon them the day of
disaster and
shatter them with double destruction.
Neither carry forth a burden out of your houses on the sabbath day, neither do ye any work,
but hallow ye the sabbath day, as I commanded your fathers.
You must not carry a load out of your houses or do any work on the Sabbath day, but you must keep the Sabbath day holy, just as I commanded your forefathers.
But they obeyed not, neither inclined their ear, but made their neck stiff, that they might not hear, nor receive instruction.
And it shall come to pass, if ye
diligently hearken unto me, saith the LORD, to bring in no burden through the gates of this city on the sabbath day,
but hallow the sabbath day, to do no work therein;
If, however, you
listen carefully to Me, says the LORD, and bring no load through the gates of this city on the Sabbath day, and keep the Sabbath day holy, and do no work on it,
But if ye will not
hearken unto me to
hallow the sabbath day, and not to bear a burden, even entering in at the gates of Jerusalem on the sabbath day; then will I
kindle a fire in the gates thereof, and it shall
devour the palaces of Jerusalem, and it shall not be
quenched.
But if you do not
listen to Me to keep the Sabbath day holy by not carrying a load while entering the gates of Jerusalem on the Sabbath day, then I will
kindle an
unquenchable fire in its gates to
consume the citadels of Jerusalem.’”
And the vessel that he made of clay was
marred in the hand of the
potter: so he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the
potter to make it.
But the vessel that he was shaping from the clay became
flawed in his hand; so he formed it into another vessel, as it seemed best for him to do.
If that nation, against whom I have pronounced, turn from their evil, I will
repent of the evil that I thought to do unto them.
But if that nation I
warned turns from its evil, then I will relent of the
disaster I had
planned to bring.
And they said, There is no hope: but we will walk after our own devices, and we will every one do the imagination of his evil heart.
But they will reply, ‘It is hopeless. We will follow our own plans, and each of us will act according to the
stubbornness of his evil heart.’”
Yet, LORD, thou knowest all their counsel against me to
slay me:
forgive not their iniquity, neither
blot out their sin from thy sight,
but let them be overthrown before thee; deal thus with them in the time of thine anger.
But You, O LORD, know all their deadly plots against me. Do not
wipe out their guilt or
blot out their sin from Your sight. Let them be overthrown before You; deal with them in the time of Your anger.
Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that this place shall no more be called
Tophet, nor The valley of the son of
Hinnom,
but The valley of slaughter.
So behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when this place will no longer be called Topheth or the Valley of Ben-
hinnom,
but the Valley of Slaughter.
And it came to pass on the
morrow, that Pashur brought forth Jeremiah out of the stocks. Then said Jeremiah unto him, The LORD hath not called thy name Pashur,
but Magor-missabib.
The next day, when Pashhur released Jeremiah from the stocks, Jeremiah said to him, “The LORD does not call you Pashhur, but Magor-missabib.
Then I said, I will not make mention of him, nor speak any more in his name.
But his word was in mine heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I was
weary with
forbearing, and I could not stay.
If I say, “I will not mention Him or speak any more in His name,” His message becomes a fire burning in my heart, shut up in my bones, and I become
weary of holding it in, and I cannot prevail.
But the LORD is with me as a mighty terrible one: therefore my persecutors shall
stumble, and they shall not prevail: they shall be greatly
ashamed; for they shall not
prosper: their
everlasting confusion shall never be forgotten.
But the LORD is with me like a
fearsome warrior. Therefore, my persecutors will
stumble and will not prevail. Since they have not succeeded, they will be utterly put to shame, with an
everlasting disgrace that will never be forgotten.
But, O LORD of hosts, that triest the righteous, and seest the
reins and the heart, let me see thy
vengeance on them: for unto thee have I opened my cause.
O LORD of Hosts, who examines the righteous, who sees the heart and mind, let me see Your
vengeance upon them, for to You I have committed my cause.
Then said Jeremiah unto them, Thus shall ye say to
Zedekiah:
But Jeremiah answered, “You are to tell
Zedekiah that
He that abideth in this city shall die by the sword, and by the famine, and by the
pestilence:
but he that goeth out, and falleth to the Chaldeans that
besiege you, he shall live, and his life shall be unto him for a prey.
Whoever stays in this city will die by sword and famine and plague,
but whoever goes out and surrenders to the Chaldeans who
besiege you will live; he will retain his life like a
spoil of war.
But I will
punish you according to the fruit of your doings, saith the LORD: and I will
kindle a fire in the forest thereof, and it shall
devour all things round about it.
I will
punish you as your deeds deserve, declares the LORD. I will
kindle a fire in your forest that will
consume everything around you.’”
But if ye will not hear these words, I
swear by myself, saith the LORD, that this house shall become a
desolation.
But if you do not obey these words, then I
swear by Myself, declares the LORD, that this house will become a pile of
rubble.’”
For thus saith the LORD unto the king’s house of Judah; Thou art
Gilead unto me, and the head of
Lebanon: yet surely I will make thee a wilderness, and cities which are not inhabited.
For this is what the LORD says concerning the house of the king of Judah: “You are like
Gilead to Me, like the summit of
Lebanon;
but I will surely turn you into a desert, like cities that are uninhabited.
Weep ye not for the dead, neither
bemoan him:
but weep sore for him that goeth away: for he shall return no more, nor see his native country.
Do not
weep for the dead king; do not
mourn his loss.
Weep bitterly for the one who is exiled, for he will never return to see his native land.
For thus saith the LORD touching Shallum the son of
Josiah king of Judah, which reigned instead of
Josiah his father, which went forth out of this place; He shall not return thither any more:
For this is what the LORD says concerning Shallum son of
Josiah, king of Judah, who succeeded his father
Josiah but has gone forth from this place: “He will never return,
But he shall die in the place
whither they have led him
captive, and shall see this land no more.
but he will die in the place to which he was exiled; he will never see this land again.”
But thine eyes and thine heart are not
but for thy
covetousness, and for to shed innocent blood, and for oppression, and for violence, to do it.
“
But your eyes and heart are set on nothing except your own
dishonest gain, on
shedding innocent blood, on practicing
extortion and oppression.”
I spake unto thee in thy prosperity; but thou saidst, I will not hear. This hath been thy manner from thy youth, that thou obeyedst not my voice.
I
warned you when you were secure. You said, ‘I will not
listen.’ This has been your way from youth, that you have not obeyed My voice.
But to the land
whereunto they desire to return, thither shall they not return.
You will never return to the land for which you long.”
But, The LORD liveth, which brought up and which led the seed of the house of Israel out of the north country, and from all countries
whither I had driven them; and they shall dwell in their own land.
Instead they will say, ‘As surely as the LORD lives, who brought and led the descendants of the house of Israel up out of the land of the north and all the other lands to which He had banished them.’ Then they will dwell once more in their own land.”
For who hath stood in the counsel of the LORD, and hath perceived and heard his word? who hath marked his word, and heard it?
But which of them has stood in the council of the LORD to see and hear His word? Who has given
heed to His word and obeyed it?
But if they had stood in my counsel, and had caused my people to hear my words, then they should have turned them from their evil way, and from the evil of their doings.
But if they had stood in My council, they would have proclaimed My words to My people and turned them back from their evil ways and deeds.”
The prophet that hath a dream, let him tell a dream; and he that hath my word, let him speak my word faithfully. What is the
chaff to the wheat? saith the LORD.
Let the prophet who has a dream retell it, but let him who has My word speak it truthfully. For what is straw compared to grain?” declares the LORD.
And the burden of the LORD shall ye mention no more: for every man’s word shall be his burden; for ye have
perverted the words of the living God, of the LORD of hosts our God.
But refer no more to the burden of the LORD, for each man’s word becomes the burden, so that you
pervert the words of the living God, the LORD of Hosts, our God.
But since ye say, The burden of the LORD; therefore thus saith the LORD; Because ye say this word, The burden of the LORD, and I have sent unto you, saying, Ye shall not say, The burden of the LORD;
But if you claim, ‘This is the burden of the LORD,’ then this is what the LORD says: Because you have said, ‘This is the burden of the LORD,’ and I specifically told you not to make this claim,
One
basket had very good figs, even like the figs that are first ripe: and the other
basket had very
naughty figs, which could not be eaten, they were so bad.
One
basket had very good figs, like those that
ripen early,
but the other
basket contained very poor figs, so bad they could not be eaten.
Then said the LORD unto me, What seest thou, Jeremiah? And I said, Figs; the good figs, very good; and the evil, very evil, that cannot be eaten, they are so evil.
“Jeremiah,” the LORD asked, “what do you see?” “Figs!” I replied. “The good figs are very good, but the bad figs are very bad, so bad they cannot be eaten.”
And as the evil figs, which cannot be eaten, they are so evil; surely thus saith the LORD, So will I give
Zedekiah the king of Judah, and his princes, and the residue of Jerusalem, that remain in this land, and them that dwell in the land of Egypt:
But like the bad figs, so bad they cannot be eaten,’ says the LORD, ‘so will I deal with
Zedekiah king of Judah, his officials, and the
remnant of Jerusalem—those remaining in this land and those living in the land of Egypt.
From the
thirteenth year of
Josiah the son of Amon king of Judah, even unto this day, that is the three and
twentieth year, the word of the LORD hath come unto me, and I have spoken unto you, rising early and speaking;
but ye have not
hearkened.
“From the
thirteenth year of
Josiah son of Amon king of Judah until this very day—twenty-three years—the word of the LORD has come to me, and I have spoken to you again and again,
but you have not
listened.
And the LORD hath sent unto you all his servants the prophets, rising early and sending them;
but ye have not
hearkened, nor inclined your ear to hear.
And the LORD has sent all His servants the prophets to you again and again,
but you have not
listened or inclined your ear to hear.
Yet ye have not
hearkened unto me, saith the LORD; that ye might
provoke me to anger with the works of your hands to your own
hurt.
‘
But to your own
harm, you have not
listened to Me,’ declares the LORD, ‘so you have
provoked Me to anger with the works of your hands.’
And it shall come to pass, when seventy years are accomplished, that I will
punish the king of Babylon, and that nation, saith the LORD, for their iniquity, and the land of the Chaldeans, and will make it perpetual desolations.
But when seventy years are complete, I will
punish the king of Babylon and that nation, the land of the Chaldeans, for their guilt, declares the LORD, and I will make it an
everlasting desolation.
To
hearken to the words of my servants the prophets, whom I sent unto you, both rising up early, and sending them,
but ye have not
hearkened;
and if you do not
listen to the words of My servants the prophets, whom I have sent you again and again even though you did not
listen,
Then spake Jeremiah unto all the princes and to all the people, saying, The LORD sent me to
prophesy against this house and against this city all the words that ye have heard.
But Jeremiah said to all the officials and all the people, “The LORD sent me to
prophesy against this house and against this city all the words that you have heard.
But know ye for certain, that if ye put me to death, ye shall surely bring innocent blood upon
yourselves, and upon this city, and upon the inhabitants thereof: for of a truth the LORD hath sent me unto you to speak all these words in your ears.
But know for certain that if you put me to death, you will bring innocent blood upon
yourselves, upon this city, and upon its residents; for truly the LORD has sent me to speak all these words in your hearing.”
Did
Hezekiah king of Judah and all Judah put him at all to death? did he not fear the LORD, and
besought the LORD, and the LORD
repented him of the evil which he had pronounced against them? Thus might we
procure great evil against our souls.
Did
Hezekiah king of Judah or
anyone else in Judah put him to death? Did
Hezekiah not fear the LORD and seek His favor, and did not the LORD relent of the
disaster He had pronounced against them?
But we are about to bring great
harm on ourselves!”
And when
Jehoiakim the king, with all his mighty men, and all the princes, heard his words, the king sought to put him to death:
but when Urijah heard it, he was afraid, and fled, and went into Egypt;
King
Jehoiakim and all his mighty men and officials heard his words, and the king sought to put him to death.
But when Uriah found out about it, he fled in fear and went to Egypt.
Therefore
hearken not ye to your prophets, nor to your diviners, nor to your dreamers, nor to your enchanters, nor to your sorcerers, which speak unto you, saying, Ye shall not serve the king of Babylon:
But as for you, do not
listen to your prophets, your diviners, your interpreters of dreams, your mediums, or your sorcerers who declare, ‘You will not serve the king of Babylon.’
But the nations that bring their neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon, and serve him, those will I let remain still in their own land, saith the LORD; and they shall till it, and dwell therein.
But the nation that will put its neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon and serve him, I will leave in its own land, to
cultivate it and reside in it, declares the LORD.”
But if they be prophets, and if the word of the LORD be with them, let them now make
intercession to the LORD of hosts, that the vessels which are left in the house of the LORD, and in the house of the king of Judah, and at Jerusalem, go not to Babylon.
If they are indeed prophets and the word of the LORD is with them, let them now
plead with the LORD of Hosts that the articles remaining in the house of the LORD, in the palace of the king of Judah, and in Jerusalem, not be taken to Babylon.
Then the word of the LORD came unto Jeremiah the prophet, after that Hananiah the prophet had broken the yoke from off the neck of the prophet Jeremiah, saying,
But shortly after Hananiah the prophet had broken the yoke off his neck, the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah:
Go and tell Hananiah, saying, Thus saith the LORD; Thou hast broken the yokes of wood; but thou shalt make for them yokes of iron.
“Go and tell Hananiah that this is what the LORD says: ‘You have broken a yoke of wood, but in its place you have fashioned a yoke of iron.’
