Then said Ziba unto the king, According to all that my lord the king hath commanded his servant, so shall thy servant do. As for Mephibosheth, said the king, he shall eat at my table, as one of the king’s sons.
And Ziba said to the king, “Your servant will do all that my lord the king has commanded.” So Mephibosheth
ate at David’s table like one of the king’s own sons.
So Mephibosheth dwelt in Jerusalem: for he did
eat continually at the king’s table; and was
lame on both his feet.
So Mephibosheth lived in Jerusalem, because he always
ate at the king’s table, and he was
lame in both feet.
And Uriah said unto David, The ark, and Israel, and Judah,
abide in tents; and my lord
Joab, and the servants of my lord, are
encamped in the open fields; shall I then go into mine house, to
eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife? as thou livest, and as thy soul liveth, I will not do this thing.
Uriah answered, “The ark and Israel and Judah are dwelling in tents, and my master
Joab and his soldiers are camped in the open field. How can I go to my house to
eat and drink and sleep with my wife? As surely as you live, and as your soul lives, I will not do such a thing!”
And when David had called him, he did
eat and drink before him; and he made him
drunk: and at even he went out to lie on his bed with the servants of his lord, but went not down to his house.
Then David invited Uriah to
eat and drink with him, and he got Uriah
drunk. And in the evening Uriah went out to lie down on his
cot with his master’s servants, but he did not go home.
But the poor man had nothing, save one little
ewe lamb, which he had bought and
nourished up: and it grew up together with him, and with his children; it did
eat of his own meat, and
drank of his own cup, and lay in his
bosom, and was unto him as a daughter.
but the poor man had nothing except one small
ewe lamb that he had bought. He raised it, and it grew up with him and his children. It shared his food and
drank from his cup; it
slept in his arms and was like a daughter to him.
And the elders of his house arose, and went to him, to raise him up from the earth: but he would not, neither did he eat bread with them.
The elders of his household stood beside him to help him up from the ground, but he was unwilling and would not eat anything with them.
Then David arose from the earth, and washed, and
anointed himself, and changed his
apparel, and came into the house of the LORD, and worshipped: then he came to his own house; and when he required, they set bread before him, and he did
eat.
Then David got up from the ground, washed and
anointed himself, changed his clothes, and went into the house of the LORD and worshiped. Then he went to his own house, and at his request they set food before him, and he
ate.
Then said his servants unto him, What thing is this that thou hast done? thou
didst fast and
weep for the child, while it was alive; but when the child was dead, thou
didst rise and
eat bread.
“What is this you have done?” his servants asked. “While the child was alive, you fasted and
wept, but when he died, you got up and
ate.”
And Jonadab said unto him, Lay thee down on thy bed, and make
thyself sick: and when thy father cometh to see thee, say unto him, I pray thee, let my sister Tamar come, and give me meat, and dress the meat in my sight, that I may see it, and
eat it at her hand.
Jonadab told him, “Lie down on your bed and pretend you are ill. When your father comes to see you, say to him, ‘Please let my sister Tamar come and give me something to eat. Let her prepare it in my sight so I may watch her and eat it from her hand.’”
So Amnon lay down, and made himself sick: and when the king was come to see him, Amnon said unto the king, I pray thee, let Tamar my sister come, and make me a couple of cakes in my sight, that I may eat at her hand.
So Amnon lay down and
feigned illness. When the king came to see him, Amnon said, “Please let my sister Tamar come and make a couple of cakes in my sight, so that I may
eat from her hand.”
And she took a pan, and poured them out before him; but he refused to eat. And Amnon said, Have out all men from me. And they went out every man from him.
Then she brought the pan and set it down before him, but he refused to
eat. “Send
everyone away!” said Amnon. And
everyone went out.
And Amnon said unto Tamar, Bring the meat into the chamber, that I may eat of thine hand. And Tamar took the cakes which she had made, and brought them into the chamber to Amnon her brother.
Then Amnon said to Tamar, “Bring the food into the
bedroom, so that I may
eat it from your hand.” Tamar took the cakes she had made and went to her brother Amnon’s
bedroom.
And when she had brought them unto him to eat, he took hold of her, and said unto her, Come lie with me, my sister.
And when she had brought them to him to eat, he took hold of her and said, “Come lie with me, my sister!”
And the king said unto Ziba, What meanest thou by these? And Ziba said, The
asses be for the king’s household to
ride on; and the bread and summer fruit for the young men to
eat; and the wine, that such as be
faint in the wilderness may drink.
“Why do you have these?” asked the king. Ziba replied, “The
donkeys are for the king’s household to
ride, the bread and summer fruit are for the young men to
eat, and the wine is to refresh those who become exhausted in the wilderness.”
And honey, and butter, and sheep, and
cheese of
kine, for David, and for the people that were with him, to
eat: for they said, The people is
hungry, and
weary, and
thirsty, in the wilderness.
honey, curds, sheep, and
cheese from the
herd for David and his people to
eat. For they said, “The people have become
hungry, exhausted, and
thirsty in the wilderness.”
For all of my father’s house were but dead men before my lord the king: yet
didst thou set thy servant among them that did
eat at thine own table. What right therefore have I yet to cry any more unto the king?
For all the house of my
grandfather deserves death from my lord the king, yet you have set your servant among those who
eat at your table. What further right, then, do I have to keep appealing to the king?”
I am this day
fourscore years old: and can I
discern between good and evil? can thy servant taste what I
eat or what I drink? can I hear any more the voice of singing men and singing women? wherefore then should thy servant be yet a burden unto my lord the king?
I am now eighty years old. Can I
discern what is good and what is not? Can your servant taste what he
eats or drinks? Can I still hear the voice of singing men and women? Why should your servant be an added burden to my lord the king?
And all the men of Judah answered the men of Israel, Because the king is near of
kin to us: wherefore then be ye
angry for this matter? have we
eaten at all of the king’s cost? or hath he given us any gift?
And all the men of Judah replied to the men of Israel, “We did this because the king is our relative. Why does this anger you? Have we ever eaten at the king’s expense or received anything for ourselves?”
For he is gone down this day, and hath slain oxen and fat cattle and sheep in abundance, and hath called all the king’s sons, and the captains of the host, and
Abiathar the priest; and, behold, they
eat and drink before him, and say, God save king Adonijah.
For
today he has gone down and sacrificed an abundance of oxen,
fattened calves, and sheep, and has invited all the sons of the king, the commanders of the army, and
Abiathar the priest. And behold, they are
eating and drinking before him, saying, ‘Long live King Adonijah!’
And Adonijah and all the guests that were with him heard it as they had made an end of
eating. And when
Joab heard the sound of the
trumpet, he said, Wherefore is this noise of the city being in an
uproar?
Now Adonijah and all his guests were finishing their feast when they heard the sound of the ram’s horn. “Why is the city in such a loud
uproar?” asked
Joab.
But
shew kindness unto the sons of Barzillai the Gileadite, and let them be of those that
eat at thy table: for so they came to me when I fled because of
Absalom thy brother.
But show loving devotion to the sons of Barzillai the Gileadite, and let them be among those who
eat at your table, because they stood by me when I fled from your brother
Absalom.
Judah and Israel were many, as the sand which is by the sea in multitude,
eating and drinking, and making
merry.
The people of Judah and Israel were as numerous as the sand on the
seashore, and they were
eating and drinking and
rejoicing.
And the man of God said unto the king, If thou
wilt give me half thine house, I will not go in with thee, neither will I
eat bread nor drink water in this place:
But the man of God replied, “If you were to give me half your possessions, I still would not go with you, nor would I eat bread or drink water in this place.
For so was it charged me by the word of the LORD, saying, Eat no bread, nor drink water, nor turn again by the same way that thou camest.
For this is what I was commanded by the word of the LORD: ‘You must not eat bread or drink water or return by the way you came.’”
Then he said unto him, Come home with me, and eat bread.
So the prophet said to the man of God, “Come home with me and eat some bread.”
And he said, I may not return with thee, nor go in with thee: neither will I eat bread nor drink water with thee in this place:
But the man replied, “I cannot return with you or eat bread or drink water with you in this place.
For it was said to me by the word of the LORD, Thou shalt eat no bread nor drink water there, nor turn again to go by the way that thou camest.
For I have been told by the word of the LORD: ‘You must not eat bread or drink water there or return by the way you came.’”
He said unto him, I am a prophet also as thou art; and an angel spake unto me by the word of the LORD, saying, Bring him back with thee into thine house, that he may
eat bread and drink water. But he
lied unto him.
Then the prophet replied, “I too am a prophet like you, and an angel spoke to me by the word of the LORD, saying, ‘Bring him back with you to your house, so that he may eat bread and drink water.’” The old prophet was lying to him,
So he went back with him, and did
eat bread in his house, and
drank water.
but the man of God went back with him,
ate bread in his house, and
drank water.
But camest back, and hast
eaten bread and
drunk water in the place, of the which the LORD did say to thee,
Eat no bread, and drink no water; thy
carcase shall not come unto the
sepulchre of thy fathers.
but you went back and
ate bread and
drank water in the place where He told you not to do so, your body shall never reach the tomb of your fathers.’”
And it came to pass, after he had
eaten bread, and after he had
drunk, that he
saddled for him the
ass, to wit, for the prophet whom he had brought back.
And after the man of God had finished
eating and drinking, the old prophet who had brought him back
saddled the
donkey for him.
and he went and found the body lying in the road, with the
donkey and the lion standing beside it. The lion had not
eaten the body or
mauled the
donkey.
Him that dieth of
Jeroboam in the city shall the dogs
eat; and him that dieth in the field shall the fowls of the air
eat: for the LORD hath spoken it.
Anyone belonging to
Jeroboam who dies in the city will be
eaten by dogs, and
anyone who dies in the field will be
eaten by the birds of the air.’ For the LORD has spoken.
Him that dieth of
Baasha in the city shall the dogs
eat; and him that dieth of his in the fields shall the fowls of the air
eat.
Anyone belonging to
Baasha who dies in the city will be
eaten by dogs, and
anyone who dies in the field will be
eaten by the birds of the air.”
And she said, As the LORD thy God liveth, I have not a
cake, but an handful of meal in a barrel, and a little oil in a
cruse: and, behold, I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and dress it for me and my son, that we may
eat it, and die.
But she replied, “As surely as the LORD your God lives, I have no bread—only a handful of flour in a
jar and a little oil in a
jug. Look, I am gathering a couple of sticks to take home and prepare a meal for myself and my son, so that we may
eat it and die.”
And she went and did according to the saying of
Elijah: and she, and he, and her house, did
eat many days.
So she went and did according to the word of
Elijah, and there was food every day for
Elijah and the woman and her household.
Now therefore send, and gather to me all Israel unto mount
Carmel, and the prophets of
Baal four hundred and fifty, and the prophets of the groves four hundred, which
eat at
Jezebel’s table.
Now
summon all Israel to meet me on Mount
Carmel, along with the four hundred and fifty prophets of
Baal and the four hundred prophets of Asherah who
eat at
Jezebel’s table.”
And
Elijah said unto
Ahab, Get thee up,
eat and drink; for there is a sound of abundance of rain.
And
Elijah said to
Ahab, “Go up,
eat and drink, for there is the sound of a heavy rain.”
So
Ahab went up to
eat and to drink. And
Elijah went up to the top of
Carmel; and he cast himself down upon the earth, and put his face between his knees,
So
Ahab went up to
eat and drink. But
Elijah climbed to the summit of
Carmel, bent down on the ground, and put his face between his knees.
And as he lay and
slept under a
juniper tree, behold, then an angel touched him, and said unto him, Arise and
eat.
Then he lay down under the
broom tree and fell
asleep. Suddenly an angel touched him and said, “Get up and
eat.”
And he looked, and, behold, there was a
cake baken on the coals, and a
cruse of water at his head. And he did
eat and drink, and laid him down again.
And he looked around, and there by his head was a
cake of bread
baked over hot coals, and a
jar of water. So he
ate and
drank and lay down again.
And the angel of the LORD came again the second time, and touched him, and said, Arise and eat; because the journey is too great for thee.
A second time the angel of the LORD returned and touched him, saying, “Get up and eat, or the journey will be too much for you.”
And he arose, and did
eat and drink, and went in the strength of that meat forty days and forty nights unto
Horeb the mount of God.
So he got up and
ate and
drank. And strengthened by that food, he walked forty days and forty nights until he reached
Horeb, the mountain of God.
And he returned back from him, and took a yoke of oxen, and
slew them, and boiled their flesh with the instruments of the oxen, and gave unto the people, and they did
eat. Then he arose, and went after
Elijah, and ministered unto him.
So
Elisha turned back from him, took his pair of oxen, and slaughtered them. With the oxen’s
equipment, he
cooked the meat and gave it to the people, and they
ate. Then he set out to follow and serve
Elijah.
And
Ahab came into his house heavy and displeased because of the word which
Naboth the Jezreelite had spoken to him: for he had said, I will not give thee the inheritance of my fathers. And he laid him down upon his bed, and turned away his face, and would
eat no bread.
So
Ahab went to his palace,
sullen and
angry because
Naboth the Jezreelite had told him, “I will not give you the inheritance of my fathers.” He lay down on his bed, turned his face away, and refused to
eat.
But
Jezebel his wife came to him, and said unto him, Why is thy spirit so
sad, that thou
eatest no bread?
Soon his wife
Jezebel came in and asked, “Why are you so
sullen that you refuse to
eat?”
And
Jezebel his wife said unto him,
Dost thou now
govern the kingdom of Israel? arise, and
eat bread, and let thine heart be
merry: I will give thee the
vineyard of
Naboth the Jezreelite.
But his wife
Jezebel said to him, “Do you not reign over Israel? Get up,
eat some food, and be
cheerful, for I will get you the
vineyard of
Naboth the Jezreelite.”
Him that dieth of
Ahab in the city the dogs shall
eat; and him that dieth in the field shall the fowls of the air
eat.
Anyone belonging to
Ahab who dies in the city will be
eaten by dogs, and
anyone who dies in the field will be
eaten by the birds of the air.”
And it fell on a day, that
Elisha passed to Shunem, where was a great woman; and she
constrained him to
eat bread. And so it was, that as
oft as he passed by, he turned in thither to
eat bread.
One day
Elisha went to Shunem, and a prominent woman who lived there persuaded him to have a meal. So whenever he would pass by, he would stop there to
eat.
So they poured out for the men to
eat. And it came to pass, as they were
eating of the
pottage, that they
cried out, and said, O thou man of God, there is death in the pot. And they could not
eat thereof.
And they poured it out for the men to
eat, but when they tasted the
stew they
cried out, “There is death in the pot, O man of God!” And they could not
eat it.
But he said, Then bring meal. And he cast it into the pot; and he said, Pour out for the people, that they may
eat. And there was no
harm in the pot.
Then
Elisha said, “Get some flour.” He threw it into the pot and said, “Pour it out for the people to
eat.” And there was nothing
harmful in the pot.
And there came a man from
Baal-shalisha, and brought the man of God bread of the firstfruits, twenty
loaves of barley, and full ears of corn in the
husk thereof. And he said, Give unto the people, that they may
eat.
Now a man from
Baal-shalishah came to the man of God with a
sack of twenty
loaves of barley bread from the first ripe grain. “Give it to the people to
eat,” said
Elisha.
And his
servitor said, What, should I set this before an hundred men? He said again, Give the people, that they may
eat: for thus saith the LORD, They shall
eat, and shall leave thereof.
But his servant asked, “How am I to set twenty
loaves before a hundred men?” “Give it to the people to
eat,” said
Elisha, “for this is what the LORD says: ‘They will
eat and have some left over.’”
So he set it before them, and they did eat, and left thereof, according to the word of the LORD.
So he set it before them, and they
ate and had some left over, according to the word of the LORD.
And he answered, Thou shalt not
smite them: wouldest thou
smite those whom thou hast taken
captive with thy sword and with thy bow? set bread and water before them, that they may
eat and drink, and go to their master.
“Do not kill them,” he replied. “Would you kill those you have captured with your own sword or bow? Set food and water before them, that they may eat and drink and then return to their master.”
And he prepared great provision for them: and when they had
eaten and
drunk, he sent them away, and they went to their master. So the bands of Syria came no more into the land of Israel.
So the king prepared a great feast for them, and after they had finished
eating and drinking, he sent them away, and they returned to their master. And the
Aramean raiders did not come into the land of Israel again.
And the king said unto her, What aileth thee? And she answered, This woman said unto me, Give thy son, that we may
eat him to day, and we will
eat my son to
morrow.
Then the king asked her, “What is the matter?” And she answered, “This woman said to me, ‘Give up your son, that we may
eat him, and
tomorrow we will
eat my son.’
So we boiled my son, and did
eat him: and I said unto her on the next day, Give thy son, that we may
eat him: and she hath
hid her son.
So we boiled my son and
ate him, and the next day I said to her, ‘Give up your son, that we may
eat him.’ But she had hidden her son.”
Then a lord on whose hand the king
leaned answered the man of God, and said, Behold, if the LORD would make windows in heaven, might this thing be? And he said, Behold, thou shalt see it with thine eyes, but shalt not
eat thereof.
But the officer on whose arm the king
leaned answered the man of God, “Look, even if the LORD were to make windows in heaven, could this really happen?” “You will see it with your own eyes,” replied
Elisha, “but you will not
eat any of it.”
And when these lepers came to the
uttermost part of the camp, they went into one tent, and did
eat and drink, and carried thence silver, and gold, and
raiment, and went and
hid it; and came again, and entered into another tent, and carried thence also, and went and
hid it.
When the lepers reached the edge of the camp, they went into a tent to
eat and drink. Then they carried off the silver, gold, and clothing, and went and
hid them. On returning, they entered another tent, carried off some items from there, and
hid them.
And that lord answered the man of God, and said, Now, behold, if the LORD should make windows in heaven, might such a thing be? And he said, Behold, thou shalt see it with thine eyes, but shalt not eat thereof.
And the officer had answered the man of God, “Look, even if the LORD were to make windows in heaven, could this really happen?” So
Elisha had replied, “You will see it with your own eyes, but you will not
eat any of it!”
And the dogs shall
eat Jezebel in the portion of
Jezreel, and there shall be none to
bury her. And he opened the door, and fled.
And on the plot of ground at
Jezreel the dogs will
devour Jezebel, and there will be no one to
bury her.’” Then the young prophet opened the door and ran.
And when he was come in, he did
eat and drink, and said, Go, see now this
cursed woman, and
bury her: for she is a king’s daughter.
Then
Jehu went in and
ate and
drank. “Take care of this
cursed woman,” he said, “and
bury her, for she was the daughter of a king.”
Wherefore they came again, and told him. And he said, This is the word of the LORD, which he spake by his servant
Elijah the Tishbite, saying, In the portion of
Jezreel shall dogs
eat the flesh of
Jezebel:
So they went back and told
Jehu, who replied, “This is the word of the LORD, which He spoke through His servant
Elijah the Tishbite: ‘On the plot of ground at
Jezreel the dogs will
devour the flesh of
Jezebel.
But
Rab-shakeh said unto them, Hath my master sent me to thy master, and to thee, to speak these words? hath he not sent me to the men which sit on the wall, that they may
eat their own dung, and drink their own
piss with you.
But the
Rabshakeh replied, “Has my master sent me to speak these words only to you and your master, and not to the men sitting on the wall, who are destined with you to
eat their own dung and drink their own
urine?”
Hearken not to
Hezekiah: for thus saith the king of Assyria, Make an agreement with me by a present, and come out to me, and then
eat ye every man of his own vine, and every one of his fig tree, and drink ye every one the waters of his
cistern:
Do not
listen to
Hezekiah, for this is what the king of Assyria says: Make peace with me and come out to me. Then every one of you will
eat from his own vine and his own fig tree, and drink water from his own
cistern,
And this shall be a sign unto thee, Ye shall
eat this year such things as grow of themselves, and in the second year that which springeth of the same; and in the third year
sow ye, and
reap, and plant vineyards, and
eat the fruits thereof.
And this will be a sign to you, O
Hezekiah: This year you will
eat what grows on its own, and in the second year what springs from the same. But in the third year you will
sow and
reap; you will plant vineyards and
eat their fruit.
Nevertheless the priests of the high places came not up to the altar of the LORD in Jerusalem, but they did
eat of the
unleavened bread among their brethren.
Although the priests of the high places did not come up to the altar of the LORD in Jerusalem, they
ate unleavened bread with their fellow priests.
And changed his prison garments: and he did eat bread continually before him all the days of his life.
So
Jehoiachin changed out of his prison clothes, and he
dined regularly at the king’s table for the rest of his life.
And there they were with David three days, eating and drinking: for their brethren had prepared for them.
They spent three days there eating and drinking with David, for their relatives had provided for them.
And did
eat and drink before the LORD on that day with great
gladness. And they made Solomon the son of David king the second time, and
anointed him unto the LORD to be the chief governor, and
Zadok to be priest.
That day they
ate and
drank with great joy in the presence of the LORD. Then, for a second time, they designated David’s son Solomon as king,
anointing him before the LORD as ruler, and
Zadok as the priest.
And the men which were expressed by name rose up, and took the
captives, and with the
spoil clothed all that were naked among them, and
arrayed them, and
shod them, and gave them to
eat and to drink, and
anointed them, and carried all the feeble of them upon
asses, and brought them to
Jericho, the city of palm trees, to their brethren: then they returned to Samaria.
Then the men who were designated by name arose, took charge of the
captives, and provided from the
plunder clothing for the naked. They clothed them, gave them
sandals and food and drink,
anointed their wounds, and put all the feeble on
donkeys. So they brought them to
Jericho, the City of Palms, to their brothers. Then they returned to Samaria.
And
Hezekiah spake
comfortably unto all the Levites that taught the good knowledge of the LORD: and they did
eat throughout the feast seven days, offering peace offerings, and making confession to the LORD God of their fathers.
And
Hezekiah encouraged all the Levites who performed
skillfully before the LORD. For seven days they
ate their assigned portion, sacrificing
fellowship offerings and giving
thanks to the LORD, the God of their fathers.
And
Azariah the chief priest of the house of
Zadok answered him, and said, Since the people began to bring the offerings into the house of the LORD, we have had enough to
eat, and have left
plenty: for the LORD hath blessed his people; and that which is left is this great store.
and
Azariah, the chief priest of the household of
Zadok, answered him, “Since the people began to bring their contributions into the house of the LORD, we have had enough to
eat and there is
plenty left over, because the LORD has blessed His people; this great abundance is what is left over.”
And the Tirshatha said unto them, that they should not
eat of the most holy things, till there stood up a priest with
Urim and with
Thummim.
The governor ordered them not to
eat the most holy things until there was a priest to
consult the
Urim and
Thummim.
And the children of Israel, which were come again out of captivity, and all such as had separated themselves unto them from the
filthiness of the heathen of the land, to seek the LORD God of Israel, did
eat,
The Israelites who had returned from exile
ate it, together with all who had separated themselves from the uncleanness of the peoples of the land to seek the LORD, the God of Israel.
Now therefore give not your daughters unto their sons, neither take their daughters unto your sons, nor seek their peace or their wealth for ever: that ye may be strong, and eat the good of the land, and leave it for an inheritance to your children for ever.
Now, therefore, do not give your daughters in marriage to their sons or take their daughters for your sons. Never seek their peace or prosperity, so that you may be strong and may
eat the good things of the land, leaving it as an inheritance to your sons
forever.’
Then
Ezra rose up from before the house of God, and went into the chamber of Johanan the son of Eliashib: and when he came thither, he did
eat no bread, nor drink water: for he
mourned because of the
transgression of them that had been carried away.
Then
Ezra withdrew from before the house of God and walked to the chamber of Jehohanan son of Eliashib. And while he stayed there, he
ate no food and
drank no water, because he was
mourning over the unfaithfulness of the exiles.
For there were that said, We, our sons, and our daughters, are many: therefore we take up corn for them, that we may eat, and live.
Some were saying, “We and our sons and daughters are numerous. We must get grain in order to eat and stay alive.”
Moreover from the time that I was appointed to be their governor in the land of Judah, from the
twentieth year even unto the two and
thirtieth year of
Artaxerxes the king, that is, twelve years, I and my brethren have not
eaten the bread of the governor.
Furthermore, from the day King
Artaxerxes appointed me to be their governor in the land of Judah, from his
twentieth year until his thirty-second year (twelve years total), neither I nor my brothers
ate the food
allotted to the governor.
And the Tirshatha said unto them, that they should not
eat of the most holy things, till there stood up a priest with
Urim and
Thummim.
The governor ordered them not to
eat the most holy things until there was a priest to
consult the
Urim and
Thummim.
Then he said unto them, Go your way,
eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our Lord: neither be ye
sorry; for the joy of the LORD is your strength.
Then
Nehemiah told them, “Go and
eat what is rich, drink what is sweet, and send out portions to those who have nothing prepared, since
today is holy to our Lord. Do not
grieve, for the joy of the LORD is your strength.”
And all the people went their way to
eat, and to drink, and to send portions, and to make great
mirth, because they had understood the words that were declared unto them.
Then all the people began to
eat and drink, to send out portions, and to
rejoice greatly, because they understood the words that had been made known to them.
And they took strong cities, and a fat land, and possessed houses full of all goods, wells
digged, vineyards, and oliveyards, and fruit trees in abundance: so they did
eat, and were filled, and became fat, and delighted themselves in thy great goodness.
They captured fortified cities and fertile land and took houses full of all goods, wells already
dug, vineyards, olive groves, and fruit trees in abundance. So they
ate and were filled; they grew fat and delighted in Your great goodness.
Behold, we are servants this day, and for the land that thou gavest unto our fathers to eat the fruit thereof and the good thereof, behold, we are servants in it:
So here we are
today as slaves in the land You gave our fathers to enjoy its fruit and goodness— here we are as slaves!
Go, gather together all the Jews that are present in
Shushan, and fast ye for me, and neither
eat nor drink three days, night or day: I also and my maidens will fast likewise; and so will I go in unto the king, which is not according to the law: and if I perish, I perish.
“Go and
assemble all the Jews who can be found in
Susa, and fast for me. Do not
eat or drink for three days, night or day, and I and my maidens will fast as you do. After that, I will go to the king, even though it is against the law. And if I perish, I perish!”
And his sons went and feasted in their houses, every one his day; and sent and called for their three sisters to eat and to drink with them.
Job’s sons would take turns holding feasts in their homes, and they would
invite their three sisters to
eat and drink with them.
And there was a day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother’s house:
One day, while Job’s sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house,
While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, Thy sons and thy daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother’s house:
While he was still speaking, another
messenger came and reported: “Your sons and daughters were
eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house,
For my
sighing cometh before I
eat, and my roarings are poured out like the waters.
I
sigh when food is put before me, and my groans pour out like water.
Whose harvest the
hungry eateth up, and taketh it even out of the thorns, and the
robber swalloweth up their substance.
Can that which is unsavoury be eaten without salt? or is there any taste in the white of an egg?
Is tasteless food
eaten without salt, or is there
flavor in the white of an egg?
And he, as a
rotten thing, consumeth, as a garment that is
moth eaten.
So man wastes away like something
rotten, like a
moth-
eaten garment.
When he is about to fill his
belly, God shall cast the
fury of his wrath upon him, and shall rain it upon him while he is
eating.
When he has filled his stomach, God will
vent His
fury upon him, raining it down on him as he
eats.
And another dieth in the bitterness of his soul, and never eateth with pleasure.
Yet another man dies in the bitterness of his soul, having never tasted prosperity.
Then let me
sow, and let another
eat;
yea, let my offspring be rooted out.
then may another eat what I have sown, and may my crops be uprooted.
Or have
eaten my
morsel myself alone, and the fatherless hath not
eaten thereof;
if I have
eaten my
morsel alone, not sharing it with the fatherless—
If I have eaten the fruits thereof without money, or have caused the owners thereof to lose their life:
if I have
devoured its produce without payment or broken the spirit of its tenants,
