I
have sent among you the
pestilence after the manner of Egypt: your young men
have I slain with the sword, and
have taken away your horses; and I
have made the
stink of your camps to come up unto your nostrils: yet
have ye not returned unto me, saith the LORD.
“I sent plagues among you like those of Egypt; I killed your young men with the sword, along with your captured horses. I filled your nostrils with the
stench of your camp, yet you did not return to Me,” declares the LORD.
I
have overthrown some of you, as God overthrew
Sodom and
Gomorrah, and ye were as a
firebrand plucked out of the burning: yet
have ye not returned unto me, saith the LORD.
For thus saith the Lord GOD; The city that went out by a thousand shall leave an hundred, and that which went forth by an hundred shall leave ten, to the house of Israel.
This is what the Lord GOD says: “The city that marches out a thousand strong will only see a hundred return, and the one that marches out a hundred strong will have but ten left in the house of Israel.”
Forasmuch therefore as your
treading is upon the poor, and ye take from him burdens of wheat: ye
have built houses of
hewn stone, but ye shall not dwell in them; ye
have planted pleasant vineyards, but ye shall not drink wine of them.
Therefore, because you
trample on the poor and exact from him a tax of grain, you will never live in the stone houses you
have built; you will never drink the wine from the
lush vineyards you
have planted.
Seek good, and not evil, that ye may live: and so the LORD, the God of hosts, shall be with you, as ye have spoken.
Seek good, not evil, so that you may live. And the LORD, the God of Hosts, will be with you, as you have claimed.
Though ye offer me burnt offerings and your meat offerings, I will not accept them: neither will I regard the peace offerings of your fat beasts.
Even though you offer Me burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them; for your peace offerings of
fattened cattle I will
have no regard.
Have ye offered unto me sacrifices and offerings in the wilderness forty years, O house of Israel?
Did you bring Me sacrifices and offerings forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel?
But ye
have borne the tabernacle of your
Moloch and Chiun your images, the star of your god, which ye made to
yourselves.
You
have taken along Sakkuth your king and Kaiwan your star god, the idols you made for
yourselves.
Shall horses run upon the rock? will one
plow there with oxen? for ye
have turned judgment into gall, and the fruit of righteousness into
hemlock:
“Do horses
gallop on the cliffs? Does one
plow the sea with oxen? But you
have turned justice into poison and the fruit of righteousness into
wormwood—
Ye which
rejoice in a thing of
nought, which say,
Have we not taken to us horns by our own strength?
you who
rejoice in Lo-
debar and say, ‘Did we not take Karnaim by our own strength?’
Are ye not as children of the Ethiopians unto me, O children of Israel? saith the LORD. Have not I brought up Israel out of the land of Egypt? and the Philistines from Caphtor, and the Syrians from Kir?
“Are you not like the Cushites to Me, O children of Israel?” declares the LORD. “Did I not bring Israel up from the land of Egypt, the Philistines from Caphtor, and the Arameans from Kir?
And I will plant them upon their land, and they shall no more be pulled up out of their land which I have given them, saith the LORD thy God.
I will firmly plant them in their own land, never again to be uprooted from the land that I have given them,” says the LORD your God.
The vision of
Obadiah. Thus saith the Lord GOD concerning
Edom; We
have heard a rumour from the LORD, and an ambassador is sent among the heathen, Arise ye, and let us rise up against her in battle.
This is the vision of
Obadiah: This is what the Lord GOD says about
Edom— We
have heard a message from the LORD; an
envoy has been sent among the nations to say, “Rise up, and let us go to battle against her!”—
Behold, I
have made thee small among the heathen: thou art greatly
despised.
“Behold, I will make you small among the nations; you will be deeply
despised.
If
thieves came to thee, if robbers by night, (how art thou cut off!) would they not
have stolen till they had enough? if the grapegatherers came to thee, would they not leave some grapes?
“If
thieves came to you, if robbers by night— oh, how you will be ruined— would they not
steal only what they wanted? If
grape gatherers came to you, would they not leave some gleanings?
All the men of thy
confederacy have brought thee even to the border: the men that were at peace with thee
have deceived thee, and prevailed against thee; they that eat thy bread
have laid a wound under thee: there is none understanding in him.
All the men allied with you will drive you to the border; the men at peace with you will
deceive and overpower you. Those who eat your bread will set a
trap for you without your awareness of it.
But thou shouldest not
have looked on the day of thy brother in the day that he became a stranger; neither shouldest thou
have rejoiced over the children of Judah in the day of their destruction; neither shouldest thou
have spoken proudly in the day of distress.
But you should not
gloat in that day, your brother’s day of misfortune, nor
rejoice over the people of Judah in the day of their destruction, nor
boast proudly in the day of their distress.
Thou shouldest not
have entered into the gate of my people in the day of their
calamity;
yea, thou shouldest not
have looked on their
affliction in the day of their
calamity, nor
have laid hands on their substance in the day of their
calamity;
Neither shouldest thou
have stood in the
crossway, to cut off those of his that did escape; neither shouldest thou
have delivered up those of his that did remain in the day of distress.
Nor should you stand at the crossroads to cut off their fugitives, nor deliver up their survivors in the day of their distress.
For the day of the LORD is near upon all the heathen: as thou hast done, it shall be done unto thee: thy reward shall return upon thine own head.
For the Day of the LORD is near for all the nations. As you
have done, it will be done to you; your
recompense will return upon your own head.
For as ye
have drunk upon my holy mountain, so shall all the heathen drink continually,
yea, they shall drink, and they shall
swallow down, and they shall be as though they had not been.
For as you
drank on My holy mountain, so all the nations will drink continually. They will drink and
gulp it down; they will be as if they had never existed.
Then said they unto him, Tell us, we pray thee, for whose cause this evil is upon us; What is thine occupation? and whence comest thou? what is thy country? and of what people art thou?
“Tell us now,” they demanded, “who is to
blame for this
calamity that is upon us? What is your occupation, and where
have you come from? What is your country, and who are your people?”
Then were the men exceedingly afraid, and said unto him, Why hast thou done this? For the men knew that he fled from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them.
Then the men were even more afraid and said to him, “What
have you done?” The men knew that he was
fleeing from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them.
Wherefore they
cried unto the LORD, and said, We
beseech thee, O LORD, we
beseech thee, let us not perish for this man’s life, and lay not upon us innocent blood: for thou, O LORD, hast done as it pleased thee.
So they
cried out to the LORD: “Please, O LORD, do not let us perish on account of this man’s life! Do not charge us with innocent blood! For You, O LORD,
have done as You pleased.”
Then I said, I am cast out of thy sight; yet I will look again toward thy holy temple.
At this, I said, ‘I have been banished from Your sight; yet I will look once more toward Your holy temple.’
But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of
thanksgiving; I will pay that that I
have vowed. Salvation is of the LORD.
But I, with the voice of
thanksgiving, will sacrifice to You. I will
fulfill what I
have vowed. Salvation is from the LORD!”
But let man and beast be covered with
sackcloth, and cry
mightily unto God:
yea, let them turn every one from his evil way, and from the violence that is in their hands.
Furthermore, let both man and beast be covered with
sackcloth, and
have everyone call out earnestly to God. Let each one turn from his evil ways and from the violence in his hands.
Then said the LORD, Doest thou well to be
angry?
But the LORD replied, “
Have you any right to be
angry?”
And God said to
Jonah, Doest thou well to be
angry for the
gourd? And he said, I do well to be
angry, even unto death.
Then God asked
Jonah, “
Have you any right to be
angry about the plant?” “I do,” he replied. “I am
angry enough to die!”
Therefore thou shalt have none that shall cast a cord by lot in the congregation of the LORD.
Therefore, you will have no one in the assembly of the LORD to divide the land by lot.
Even of late my people is risen up as an enemy: ye pull off the
robe with the garment from them that pass by securely as men
averse from war.
But of late My people
have risen up like an enemy: You strip off the splendid
robe from
unsuspecting passersby like men returning from battle.
The women of my people have ye cast out from their pleasant houses; from their children have ye taken away my glory for ever.
You drive the women of My people from their pleasant homes. You take away My blessing from their children
forever.
The breaker is come up before them: they have broken up, and have passed through the gate, and are gone out by it: and their king shall pass before them, and the LORD on the head of them.
One who breaks open the way will go up before them; they will break through the gate, and go out by it. Their King will pass through before them, the LORD as their leader.
Then shall they cry unto the LORD, but he will not hear them: he will even hide his face from them at that time, as they
have behaved themselves ill in their doings.
Then they will cry out to the LORD, but He will not answer them. At that time He will hide His face from them because of the evil they have done.
Therefore night shall be unto you, that ye shall not have a vision; and it shall be dark unto you, that ye shall not divine; and the sun shall go down over the prophets, and the day shall be dark over them.
Therefore night will come over you without visions, and darkness without
divination. The sun will set on these prophets, and the
daylight will turn black over them.
In that day, saith the LORD, will I
assemble her that halteth, and I will gather her that is driven out, and her that I
have afflicted;
“On that day,” declares the LORD, “I will gather the
lame; I will
assemble the outcast, even those whom I
have afflicted.
Now why
dost thou cry out
aloud? is there no king in thee? is thy counsellor perished? for pangs
have taken thee as a woman in
travail.
Why do you now cry
aloud? Is there no king among you? Has your
counselor perished so that
anguish grips you like a woman in labor?
Now also many nations are gathered against thee, that say, Let her be
defiled, and let our eye look upon
Zion.
But now many nations
have assembled against you, saying, “Let her be
defiled, and let us feast our eyes on
Zion.”
But thou,
Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth
have been from of old, from
everlasting.
But you,
Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come forth for Me One to be ruler over Israel— One whose origins are of old, from the days of
eternity.
And I will cut off witchcrafts out of thine hand; and thou shalt have no more soothsayers:
I will cut the
sorceries from your hand, and you will
have no fortune-tellers.
I will take
vengeance in anger and wrath upon the nations that
have not obeyed Me.”
O my people, what
have I done unto thee? and wherein
have I
wearied thee?
testify against me.
‘My people, what
have I done to you?
Testify against Me how I
have wearied you!
For the rich men thereof are full of violence, and the inhabitants thereof
have spoken lies, and their tongue is
deceitful in their mouth.
For the wealthy of the city are full of violence, and its residents speak lies; their tongues are
deceitful in their mouths.
For the statutes of Omri are kept, and all the works of the house of
Ahab, and ye walk in their counsels; that I should make thee a
desolation, and the inhabitants thereof an
hissing: therefore ye shall bear the reproach of my people.
You
have kept the statutes of Omri and all the practices of
Ahab’s house; you
have followed their counsel. Therefore I will make you a
desolation, and your inhabitants an object of contempt; you will bear the
scorn of the nations.”
Woe is me! for I am as when they
have gathered the summer fruits, as the grapegleanings of the
vintage: there is no
cluster to eat: my soul desired the firstripe fruit.
Rejoice not against me, O mine enemy: when I fall, I shall arise; when I sit in darkness, the LORD shall be a light unto me.
Do not
gloat over me, my enemy! Though I
have fallen, I will arise; though I sit in darkness, the LORD will be my light.
I will bear the
indignation of the LORD, because I
have sinned against him, until he
plead my cause, and
execute judgment for me: he will bring me forth to the light, and I shall behold his righteousness.
Because I
have sinned against Him, I must
endure the
rage of the LORD, until He argues my case and executes justice for me. He will bring me into the light; I will see His righteousness.
Thus saith the LORD: Though they be quiet, and likewise many, yet thus shall they be cut down, when he shall pass through. Though I
have afflicted thee, I will
afflict thee no more.
This is what the LORD says: “Though they are allied and numerous, yet they will be cut down and pass away. Though I
have afflicted you, O Judah, I will
afflict you no longer.
For the LORD will restore the
splendor of Jacob like the
splendor of Israel, though destroyers
have laid them waste and ruined the branches of their vine.
The shield of his mighty men is made red, the
valiant men are in scarlet: the
chariots shall be with flaming torches in the day of his preparation, and the
fir trees shall be
terribly shaken.
The shields of his mighty men are red; the
valiant warriors are dressed in scarlet. The fittings of the
chariots flash like fire on the day they are prepared, and the spears of
cypress have been
brandished.
Thou hast multiplied thy merchants above the stars of heaven: the
cankerworm spoileth, and fleeth away.
You
have multiplied your merchants more than the stars of the sky. The young
locust strips the land and
flies away.
Art thou not from
everlasting, O LORD my God, mine Holy One? we shall not die. O LORD, thou hast ordained them for judgment; and, O mighty God, thou hast established them for correction.
Are You not from
everlasting, O LORD, my God, my Holy One? We will not die. O LORD, You
have appointed them to
execute judgment; O Rock, You
have established them for correction.
And makest men as the fishes of the sea, as the
creeping things, that
have no ruler over them?
You
have made men like the fish of the sea, like
creeping things that
have no ruler.
Because thou hast
spoiled many nations, all the
remnant of the people shall
spoil thee; because of men’s blood, and for the violence of the land, of the city, and of all that dwell therein.
Because you
have plundered many nations, the
remnant of the people will
plunder you— because of your
bloodshed against man and your violence against the land, the city, and all their dwellers.
Thou hast consulted shame to thy house by cutting off many people, and hast
sinned against thy soul.
You
have plotted shame for your house by cutting off many peoples and
forfeiting your life.
O LORD, I have heard thy speech, and was afraid: O LORD, revive thy work in the midst of the years, in the midst of the years make known; in wrath remember mercy.
O LORD, I
have heard the report of You; I stand in
awe, O LORD, of Your deeds. Revive them in these years; make them known in these years. In Your wrath, remember mercy!
And them that are turned back from the LORD; and those that have not sought the LORD, nor enquired for him.
and those who turn back from following the LORD, neither seeking the LORD nor inquiring of Him.”
And I will bring distress upon men, that they shall walk like blind men, because they
have sinned against the LORD: and their blood shall be poured out as dust, and their flesh as the dung.
I will bring such distress on mankind that they will walk like the blind, because they
have sinned against the LORD. Their blood will be poured out like dust and their flesh like dung.
Seek ye the LORD, all ye
meek of the earth, which
have wrought his judgment; seek righteousness, seek
meekness: it may be ye shall be
hid in the day of the LORD’S anger.
Seek the LORD, all you humble of the earth who carry out His justice. Seek righteousness; seek
humility. Perhaps you will be sheltered on the day of the LORD’s anger.
I
have heard the reproach of Moab, and the revilings of the children of
Ammon, whereby they
have reproached my people, and
magnified themselves against their border.
“I
have heard the reproach of Moab and the insults of the
Ammonites, who
have taunted My people and threatened their borders.
This shall they
have for their pride, because they
have reproached and
magnified themselves against the people of the LORD of hosts.
This they shall
have in return for their pride, for
taunting and
mocking the people of the LORD of Hosts.
Her prophets are light and
treacherous persons: her priests
have polluted the sanctuary, they
have done violence to the law.
Her prophets are
reckless, faithless men. Her priests
profane the sanctuary; they do violence to the law.
I
have cut off the nations: their towers are
desolate; I made their streets waste, that none passeth by: their cities are destroyed, so that there is no man, that there is none inhabitant.
“I have cut off the nations; their corner towers are destroyed. I have made their streets deserted with no one to pass through. Their cities are laid waste, with no man, no inhabitant.
In that day shalt thou not be
ashamed for all thy doings, wherein thou hast
transgressed against me: for then I will take away out of the midst of thee them that
rejoice in thy pride, and thou shalt no more be
haughty because of my holy mountain.
On that day you will not be put to shame for any of the deeds by which you
have transgressed against Me. For then I will remove from among you those who
rejoice in their pride, and you will never again be
haughty on My holy mountain.
Behold, at that time I will
undo all that
afflict thee: and I will save her that halteth, and gather her that was driven out; and I will get them praise and fame in every land where they
have been put to shame.
Behold, at that time, I will deal with all who
afflict you. I will save the
lame and gather the scattered; and I will
appoint praise and fame for the disgraced throughout the earth.
Ye
have sown much, and bring in little; ye eat, but ye
have not enough; ye drink, but ye are not filled with drink; ye
clothe you, but there is none warm; and he that earneth wages earneth wages to put it into a
bag with holes.
You
have planted much but harvested little. You eat but never
have enough. You drink but never
have your fill. You put on clothes but never get warm. You
earn wages to put into a
bag pierced through.”
Therefore the heaven over you is stayed from
dew, and the earth is stayed from her fruit.
Therefore, on account of you the heavens
have withheld their
dew and the earth has
withheld its crops.
And I called for a
drought upon the land, and upon the mountains, and upon the corn, and upon the new wine, and upon the oil, and upon that which the ground bringeth forth, and upon men, and upon cattle, and upon all the labour of the hands.
I
have summoned a
drought on the fields and on the mountains, on the grain, new wine, and oil, and on whatever the ground yields, on man and beast, and on all the labor of your hands.”
Is the seed yet in the
barn?
yea, as yet the vine, and the fig tree, and the
pomegranate, and the olive tree, hath not brought forth: from this day will I
bless you.
Is there still seed in the
barn? The vine, the fig, the
pomegranate, and the olive tree
have not yet yielded fruit. But from this day on, I will
bless you.”
In that day, saith the LORD of hosts, will I take thee, O
Zerubbabel, my servant, the son of Shealtiel, saith the LORD, and will make thee as a
signet: for I
have chosen thee, saith the LORD of hosts.
On that day, declares the LORD of Hosts, I will take you, My servant,
Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, declares the LORD, and I will make you like My
signet ring, for I
have chosen you, declares the LORD of Hosts.”
Be ye not as your fathers, unto whom the former prophets
have cried, saying, Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Turn ye now from your evil ways, and from your evil doings: but they did not hear, nor
hearken unto me, saith the LORD.
Do not be like your fathers, to whom the former prophets proclaimed that this is what the LORD of Hosts says: ‘Turn now from your evil ways and deeds.’ But they did not
listen or pay attention to Me, declares the LORD.
And they answered the angel of the LORD that stood among the
myrtle trees, and said, We
have walked to and
fro through the earth, and, behold, all the earth sitteth still, and is at rest.
And the riders answered the angel of the LORD who was standing among the
myrtle trees, “We
have patrolled the earth, and behold, all the earth is at rest and
tranquil.”
Then the angel of the LORD answered and said, O LORD of hosts, how long
wilt thou not
have mercy on Jerusalem and on the cities of Judah, against which thou hast had
indignation these
threescore and ten years?
Then the angel of the LORD said, “How long, O LORD of Hosts, will You
withhold mercy from Jerusalem and the cities of Judah, with which You
have been
angry these seventy years?”
And I am very
sore displeased with the heathen that are at ease: for I was but a little displeased, and they helped forward the
affliction.
but I am fiercely
angry with the nations that are at ease. For I was a little
angry, but they
have added to the
calamity.’
And I said unto the angel that talked with me, What be these? And he answered me, These are the horns which have scattered Judah, Israel, and Jerusalem.
So I asked the angel who was speaking with me, “What are these?” And he told me, “These are the horns that have scattered Judah, Israel, and Jerusalem.”
Then said I, What come these to do? And he spake, saying, These are the horns which
have scattered Judah, so that no man did lift up his head: but these are come to
fray them, to cast out the horns of the Gentiles, which lifted up their horn over the land of Judah to
scatter it.
“What are these coming to do?” I asked. And He replied, “These are the horns that scattered Judah so that no one could raise his head; but the
craftsmen have come to
terrify them and throw down these horns of the nations that
have lifted up their horns against the land of Judah to
scatter it.”
Ho, ho, come forth, and
flee from the land of the north, saith the LORD: for I
have spread you abroad as the four winds of the heaven, saith the LORD.
“Get up! Get up!
Flee from the land of the north,” declares the LORD, “for I
have scattered you like the four winds of heaven,” declares the LORD.
For thus saith the LORD of hosts; After the glory hath he sent me unto the nations which
spoiled you: for he that toucheth you toucheth the apple of his eye.
For this is what the LORD of Hosts says: “After His Glory has sent Me against the nations that
have plundered you—for
whoever touches you touches the apple of His eye—
And he answered and spake unto those that stood before him, saying, Take away the
filthy garments from him. And unto him he said, Behold, I
have caused thine iniquity to pass from thee, and I will
clothe thee with change of
raiment.
So the angel said to those standing before him, “Take off his
filthy clothes!” Then he said to Joshua, “See, I
have removed your iniquity, and I will
clothe you with splendid robes.”
Thus saith the LORD of hosts; If thou
wilt walk in my ways, and if thou
wilt keep my charge, then thou shalt also judge my house, and shalt also keep my courts, and I will give thee places to walk among these that stand by.
“This is what the LORD of Hosts says: ‘If you walk in My ways and keep My instructions, then you will
govern My house and will also
have charge of My courts; and I will give you a place among these who are standing here.
For behold the stone that I
have laid before Joshua; upon one stone shall be seven eyes: behold, I will
engrave the graving thereof, saith the LORD of hosts, and I will remove the iniquity of that land in one day.
See the stone I
have set before Joshua; on that one stone are seven eyes. Behold, I will
engrave on it an inscription, declares the LORD of Hosts, and I will remove the iniquity of this land in a single day.
And said unto me, What seest thou? And I said, I
have looked, and behold a
candlestick all of gold, with a
bowl upon the top of it, and his seven lamps
thereon, and seven pipes to the seven lamps, which are upon the top thereof:
“What do you see?” he asked. “I see a solid gold lampstand,” I replied, “with a
bowl at the top and seven lamps on it, with seven spouts to the lamps.
The hands of
Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this house; his hands shall also finish it; and thou shalt know that the LORD of hosts hath sent me unto you.
“The hands of
Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this house, and his hands will complete it. Then you will know that the LORD of Hosts has sent me to you.
Then
cried he upon me, and spake unto me, saying, Behold, these that go toward the north country
have quieted my spirit in the north country.
Then the LORD summoned me and said, “Behold, those going to the land of the north have given rest to My Spirit in the land of the north.”
Take of them of the captivity, even of Heldai, of Tobijah, and of Jedaiah, which are come from Babylon, and come thou the same day, and go into the house of
Josiah the son of
Zephaniah;
“Take an offering from the exiles—from Heldai, Tobijah, and Jedaiah, who
have arrived from Babylon—and go that same day to the house of
Josiah son of
Zephaniah.
And to speak unto the priests which were in the house of the LORD of hosts, and to the prophets, saying, Should I
weep in the fifth month, separating myself, as I
have done these so many years?
by asking the priests of the house of the LORD of Hosts, as well as the prophets, “Should I
weep and fast in the fifth month, as I
have done these many years?”
And it shall come to pass, that as ye were a
curse among the heathen, O house of Judah, and house of Israel; so will I save you, and ye shall be a blessing: fear not, but let your hands be strong.
As you
have been a
curse among the nations, O house of Judah and house of Israel, so I will save you, and you will be a blessing. Do not be afraid; let your hands be strong.”
So again have I thought in these days to do well unto Jerusalem and to the house of Judah: fear ye not.
“so now I have resolved to do good again to Jerusalem and Judah. Do not be afraid.
Thus saith the LORD of hosts; In those days it shall come to pass, that ten men shall take hold out of all languages of the nations, even shall take hold of the
skirt of him that is a
Jew, saying, We will go with you: for we
have heard that God is with you.
This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “In those days ten men from the nations of every tongue will
tightly grasp the
robe of a
Jew, saying, ‘Let us go with you, for we
have heard that God is with you.’”
And I will
encamp about mine house because of the army, because of him that passeth by, and because of him that returneth: and no
oppressor shall pass through them any more: for now
have I seen with mine eyes.
But I will camp around My house because of an army, because of those who march to and
fro, and never again will an
oppressor overrun My people, for now I keep watch with My own eyes.
As for thee also, by the blood of thy covenant I have sent forth thy prisoners out of the pit wherein is no water.
As for you, because of the blood of My covenant, I will release your prisoners from the waterless pit.
When I
have bent Judah for me, filled the bow with Ephraim, and raised up thy sons, O
Zion, against thy sons, O Greece, and made thee as the sword of a mighty man.
For I will bend Judah as My bow and fit it with Ephraim. I will
rouse your sons, O
Zion, against the sons of Greece. I will make you like the sword of a mighty man.
For the idols
have spoken vanity, and the diviners
have seen a lie, and
have told false dreams; they comfort in vain: therefore they went their way as a flock, they were troubled, because there was no
shepherd.
For idols speak
deceit and diviners see illusions; they tell false dreams and offer empty comfort. Therefore the people
wander like sheep,
oppressed for lack of a
shepherd.
And I will
strengthen the house of Judah, and I will save the house of Joseph, and I will bring them again to place them; for I
have mercy upon them: and they shall be as though I had not cast them off: for I am the LORD their God, and will hear them.
I will
strengthen the house of Judah and save the house of Joseph. I will restore them because I
have compassion on them, and they will be as though I had not rejected them. For I am the LORD their God, and I will answer them.
I will hiss for them, and gather them; for I have redeemed them: and they shall increase as they have increased.
I will
whistle for them to gather, for I
have redeemed them; and they will be as numerous as they once were.
Whose possessors
slay them, and hold themselves not guilty: and they that sell them say, Blessed be the LORD; for I am rich: and their own
shepherds pity them not.
whose buyers slaughter them without
remorse. Those who sell them say, ‘Blessed be the LORD, for I am rich!’ Even their own
shepherds have no
compassion on them.
For I will no more
pity the inhabitants of the land, saith the LORD: but, lo, I will deliver the men every one into his neighbour’s hand, and into the hand of his king: and they shall
smite the land, and out of their hand I will not deliver them.
For I will no longer
have compassion on the people of the land, declares the LORD, but behold, I will cause each man to fall into the hands of his
neighbor and his king, who will
devastate the land, and I will not deliver it from their hands.”
And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they
have pierced, and they shall
mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his
firstborn.
Then I will pour out on the house of David and on the people of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and prayer, and they will look on Me, the One they
have pierced. They will
mourn for Him as one mourns for an only child, and
grieve bitterly for Him as one grieves for a
firstborn son.
And it shall come to pass, that when any shall yet
prophesy, then his father and his mother that
begat him shall say unto him, Thou shalt not live; for thou speakest lies in the name of the LORD: and his father and his mother that
begat him shall thrust him through when he prophesieth.
And if
anyone still prophesies, his father and mother who bore him will say to him, ‘You shall not remain alive, because you
have spoken falsely in the name of the LORD.’ When he prophesies, his father and mother who bore him will
pierce him through.
