I will make waste mountains and hills, and dry up all their herbs; and I will make the rivers islands, and I will dry up the pools.
I will lay waste the mountains and hills and dry up all their vegetation. I will turn the rivers into dry land and
drain the marshes.
Who among you will give ear to this? who will
hearken and hear for the time to come?
Who among you will pay attention to this? Who will
listen and obey
hereafter?
I was
wroth with my people, I have
polluted mine inheritance, and given them into thine hand: thou
didst shew them no mercy; upon the ancient hast thou very
heavily laid thy yoke.
I was
angry with My people; I
profaned My
heritage, and I placed them under your control. You showed them no mercy; even on the elderly you laid a most heavy yoke.
Therefore hear now this, thou that art given to pleasures, that dwellest
carelessly, that sayest in thine heart, I am, and none else beside me; I shall not sit as a widow, neither shall I know the loss of children:
So now hear this, O lover of
luxury who sits securely, who says to
herself, ‘I am, and there is none besides me. I will never be a widow or know the loss of children.’
Thus saith the LORD, In an acceptable time have I heard thee, and in a day of salvation have I helped thee: and I will preserve thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, to establish the earth, to cause to
inherit the
desolate heritages;
This is what the LORD says: “In the time of favor I will answer You, and in the day of salvation I will help You; I will keep You and
appoint You to be a covenant for the people, to restore the land, to
apportion its
desolate inheritances,
The children which thou shalt have, after thou hast lost the other, shall say again in thine ears, The place is too strait for me: give place to me that I may dwell.
Yet the children of your
bereavement will say in your hearing, ‘This place is too small for us; make room for us to live
here.’
Thus saith the LORD, Where is the bill of your mother’s
divorcement, whom I have put away? or which of my creditors is it to whom I have sold you? Behold, for your
iniquities have ye sold
yourselves, and for your transgressions is your mother put away.
This is what the LORD says: “Where is your mother’s
certificate of
divorce with which I sent
her away? Or to which of My creditors did I sell you? Look, you were sold for your
iniquities, and for your transgressions your mother was sent away.
For the LORD shall comfort
Zion: he will comfort all
her waste places; and he will make
her wilderness like
Eden, and
her desert like the garden of the LORD; joy and
gladness shall be found therein,
thanksgiving, and the voice of
melody.
There is none to guide her among all the sons whom she hath brought forth; neither is there any that taketh her by the hand of all the sons that she hath brought up.
Among all the sons she bore, there is no one to guide her; among all the sons she brought up, there is no one to take her hand.
Now therefore, what have I
here, saith the LORD, that my people is taken away for
nought? they that rule over them make them to
howl, saith the LORD; and my name continually every day is
blasphemed.
And now what have I
here? declares the LORD. For My people have been taken without cause; those who rule them
taunt, declares the LORD, and My name is
blasphemed continually all day long.
Therefore my people shall know my name: therefore they shall know in that day that I am he that
doth speak: behold, it is I.
Therefore My people will know My name; therefore they will know on that day that I am He who speaks. Here I am!”
Depart ye, depart ye, go ye out from thence, touch no unclean thing; go ye out of the midst of her; be ye clean, that bear the vessels of the LORD.
Depart, depart, go out from there! Touch no unclean thing; come out from it,
purify yourselves, you who carry the vessels of the LORD.
He was
oppressed, and he was
afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before
her shearers is
dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.
He was
oppressed and
afflicted, yet He did not open His mouth. He was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before
her shearers is silent, so He did not open His mouth.
Sing, O barren, thou that
didst not bear; break forth into singing, and cry
aloud, thou that
didst not
travail with child: for more are the children of the
desolate than the children of the married wife, saith the LORD.
“
Shout for joy, O barren woman, who bears no children; break forth in song and cry
aloud, you who have never
travailed; because more are the children of the
desolate woman than of
her who has a husband,” says the LORD.
No weapon that is formed against thee shall
prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt
condemn. This is the
heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness is of me, saith the LORD.
No weapon formed against you shall
prosper, and you will
refute every tongue that accuses you. This is the
heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their
vindication is from Me,” declares the LORD.
“But come
here, you sons of a
sorceress, you offspring of adulterers and prostitutes!
Then shalt thou call, and the LORD shall answer; thou shalt cry, and he shall say, Here I am. If thou take away from the midst of thee the yoke, the putting forth of the finger, and speaking vanity;
Then you will call, and the LORD will answer; you will cry out, and He will say, ‘
Here I am.’ If you remove the yoke from your midst, the pointing of the finger and
malicious talk,
Then shalt thou delight
thyself in the LORD; and I will cause thee to
ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the
heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.
then you will delight
yourself in the LORD, and I will make you
ride on the heights of the land and feed you with the
heritage of your father Jacob.” For the mouth of the LORD has spoken.
I will greatly
rejoice in the LORD, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the
robe of righteousness, as a
bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments, and as a
bride adorneth
herself with
her jewels.
I will
rejoice greatly in the LORD, my soul will
exult in my God; for He has clothed me with garments of salvation and
wrapped me in a
robe of righteousness, as a
bridegroom wears a priestly
headdress, as a
bride adorns
herself with
her jewels.
For as the earth bringeth forth
her bud, and as the garden causeth the things that are sown in it to spring forth; so the Lord GOD will cause righteousness and praise to spring forth before all the nations.
For as the earth brings forth its growth, and as a garden enables seed to spring up, so the Lord GOD will cause righteousness and praise to spring up before all the nations.
For
Zion’s sake will I not hold my peace, and for Jerusalem’s sake I will not rest, until the righteousness thereof go forth as brightness, and the salvation thereof as a lamp that burneth.
For
Zion’s sake I will not keep silent, and for Jerusalem’s sake I will not keep still, until
her righteousness shines like a bright light,
her salvation like a
blazing torch.
And give him no rest, till he establish, and till he make Jerusalem a praise in the earth.
nor give Him any rest until He establishes Jerusalem and makes her the praise of the earth.
O LORD, why hast thou made us to
err from thy ways, and
hardened our heart from thy fear? Return for thy servants’ sake, the tribes of thine inheritance.
Why, O LORD, do You make us
stray from Your ways and
harden our hearts from fearing You? Return, for the sake of Your servants, the tribes of Your
heritage.
I am sought of them that asked not for me; I am found of them that sought me not: I said, Behold me, behold me, unto a nation that was not called by my name.
“I revealed Myself to those who did not ask for Me; I was found by those who did not seek Me. To a nation that did not call My name, I said, ‘Here I am! Here I am!’
And
Sharon shall be a fold of flocks, and the valley of
Achor a place for the
herds to lie down in, for my people that have sought me.
Sharon will become a pasture for flocks, and the Valley of
Achor a resting place for
herds, for My people who seek Me.
And I will
rejoice in Jerusalem, and joy in my people: and the voice of
weeping shall be no more heard in
her, nor the voice of crying.
I will
rejoice in Jerusalem and take delight in My people. The sounds of
weeping and crying will no longer be heard in
her.
Before she
travailed, she brought forth; before
her pain came, she was delivered of a man child.
“Before she was in labor, she gave birth; before she was in pain, she delivered a boy.
Who hath heard such a thing? who hath seen such things? Shall the earth be made to bring forth in one day? or shall a nation be born at once? for as soon as
Zion travailed, she brought forth
her children.
Who has heard of such as this? Who has seen such things? Can a country be born in a day or a nation be delivered in an instant? Yet as soon as
Zion was in labor, she gave birth to
her children.
Rejoice ye with Jerusalem, and be
glad with
her, all ye that love
her:
rejoice for joy with
her, all ye that
mourn for
her:
That ye may
suck, and be satisfied with the breasts of
her consolations; that ye may milk out, and be delighted with the abundance of
her glory.
so that you may
nurse and be satisfied at
her comforting breasts; you may drink deeply and delight
yourselves in
her glorious abundance.
For thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will extend peace to
her like a river, and the glory of the Gentiles like a flowing stream: then shall ye
suck, ye shall be borne upon
her sides, and be
dandled upon
her knees.
For this is what the LORD says: “I will extend peace to
her like a river, and the wealth of nations like a flowing stream; you will
nurse and be carried on
her arm, and
bounced upon
her knees.
As one whom his mother comforteth, so will I comfort you; and ye shall be comforted in Jerusalem.
As a mother comforts
her son, so will I comfort you, and you will be
consoled over Jerusalem.”
And when ye see this, your heart shall
rejoice, and your bones shall
flourish like an
herb: and the hand of the LORD shall be known toward his servants, and his
indignation toward his enemies.
When you see, you will
rejoice, and you will
flourish like grass; then the hand of the LORD will be revealed to His servants, but His wrath will be shown to His enemies.
For, lo, I will call all the families of the kingdoms of the north, saith the LORD; and they shall come, and they shall set every one his throne at the entering of the gates of Jerusalem, and against all the walls thereof round about, and against all the cities of Judah.
For I am about to
summon all the clans and kingdoms of the north,” declares the LORD. “Their kings will come and set up their thrones at the entrance of the gates of Jerusalem. They will attack all
her surrounding walls and all the other cities of Judah.
Israel was
holiness unto the LORD, and the firstfruits of his increase: all that
devour him shall
offend; evil shall come upon them, saith the LORD.
Israel was holy to the LORD, the firstfruits of His harvest. All who
devoured her found themselves guilty;
disaster came upon them,’” declares the LORD.
I brought you into a fertile land to eat its fruit and
bounty, but you came and
defiled My land, and made My inheritance
detestable.
How canst thou say, I am not
polluted, I have not gone after
Baalim? see thy way in the valley, know what thou hast done: thou art a swift
dromedary traversing her ways;
“How can you say, ‘I am not
defiled; I have not run after the Baals’? Look at your
behavior in the valley; acknowledge what you have done. You are a swift young she-
camel galloping here and there,
A wild
ass used to the wilderness, that snuffeth up the wind at
her pleasure; in
her occasion who can turn
her away? all they that seek
her will not
weary themselves; in
her month they shall find
her.
a wild
donkey at home in the wilderness,
sniffing the wind in the heat of
her desire. Who can restrain
her passion? All who seek
her need not
weary themselves; in mating season they will find
her.
Can a
maid forget her ornaments, or a
bride her attire? yet my people have forgotten me days without number.
They say, If a man put away his wife, and she go from him, and become another man’s, shall he return unto
her again? shall not that land be greatly
polluted? but thou hast played the
harlot with many lovers; yet return again to me, saith the LORD.
“If a man divorces his wife and she leaves him to marry another, can he ever return to
her? Would not such a land be completely
defiled? But you have played the
harlot with many lovers— and you would return to Me?” declares the LORD.
The LORD said also unto me in the days of
Josiah the king, Hast thou seen that which
backsliding Israel hath done? she is gone up upon every high mountain and under every green tree, and there hath played the
harlot.
Now in the days of King
Josiah, the LORD said to me, “Have you seen what faithless Israel has done? She has gone up on every high hill and under every green tree to
prostitute herself there.
And I said after she had done all these things, Turn thou unto me. But she returned not. And
her treacherous sister Judah saw it.
I thought that after she had done all these things, she would return to Me. But she did not return, and her unfaithful sister Judah saw it.
And I saw, when for all the causes whereby
backsliding Israel committed
adultery I had put
her away, and given
her a bill of
divorce; yet
her treacherous sister Judah feared not, but went and played the
harlot also.
She saw that because faithless Israel had committed
adultery, I gave
her a
certificate of
divorce and sent
her away. Yet that unfaithful sister Judah had no fear and
prostituted herself as well.
And it came to pass through the lightness of
her whoredom, that she
defiled the land, and committed
adultery with stones and with stocks.
And yet for all this
her treacherous sister Judah hath not turned unto me with
her whole heart, but
feignedly, saith the LORD.
Yet in spite of all this, her unfaithful sister Judah did not return to Me with all her heart, but only in pretense,” declares the LORD.
And the LORD said to me, “Faithless Israel has shown herself more righteous than unfaithful Judah.
But I said, How shall I put thee among the children, and give thee a pleasant land, a goodly
heritage of the hosts of nations? and I said, Thou shalt call me, My father; and shalt not turn away from me.
Then I said, ‘How I long to make you My sons and give you a desirable land, the most beautiful inheritance of all the nations!’ I thought you would call Me ‘Father’ and never turn away from following Me.
Surely as a wife
treacherously departeth from
her husband, so have ye dealt
treacherously with me, O house of Israel, saith the LORD.
But as a woman may
betray her husband, so you have
betrayed Me, O house of Israel,” declares the LORD.
Return, ye
backsliding children, and I will
heal your backslidings. Behold, we come unto thee; for thou art the LORD our God.
“Return, O faithless children, and I will
heal your
faithlessness.” “
Here we are. We come to You, for You are the LORD our God.
For shame hath
devoured the labour of our fathers from our youth; their flocks and their
herds, their sons and their daughters.
From our youth, that shameful god has consumed what our fathers have worked for— their flocks and herds, their sons and daughters.
As keepers of a field, are they against
her round about; because she hath been
rebellious against me, saith the LORD.
They
surround her like men guarding a field, because she has rebelled against Me,” declares the LORD.
For I have heard a voice as of a woman in
travail, and the
anguish as of
her that bringeth forth
her first child, the voice of the daughter of
Zion, that bewaileth
herself, that spreadeth
her hands, saying,
Woe is me now! for my soul is
wearied because of murderers.
For I hear a cry like a woman in labor, a cry of
anguish like one bearing
her first child— the cry of the Daughter of
Zion gasping for breath, stretching out
her hands to say, “
Woe is me, for my soul
faints before the murderers!”
Run ye to and
fro through the streets of Jerusalem, and see now, and know, and seek in the broad places thereof, if ye can find a man, if there be any that executeth judgment, that seeketh the truth; and I will
pardon it.
“Go up and down the streets of Jerusalem. Look now and take note; search
her squares. If you can find a single person,
anyone who acts justly,
anyone who seeks the truth, then I will
forgive the city.
Go ye up upon her walls, and destroy; but make not a full end: take away her battlements; for they are not the LORD’S.
Go up through
her vineyards and
ravage them, but do not finish them off. Strip off
her branches, for they do not belong to the LORD.
And they shall eat up thine harvest, and thy bread, which thy sons and thy daughters should eat: they shall eat up thy flocks and thine
herds: they shall eat up thy vines and thy fig trees: they shall
impoverish thy
fenced cities, wherein thou trustedst, with the sword.
They will
devour your harvest and food; they will
consume your sons and daughters; they will eat up your flocks and
herds; they will feed on your vines and fig trees. With the sword they will destroy the fortified cities in which you trust.”
The
shepherds with their flocks shall come unto
her; they shall pitch their tents against
her round about; they shall feed every one in his place.
Shepherds and their flocks will come against
her; they will pitch their tents all around
her, each tending his own portion:
Prepare ye war against
her; arise, and let us go up at
noon.
Woe unto us! for the day goeth away, for the shadows of the evening are stretched out.
‘Prepare for battle against
her; rise up, let us attack at
noon.
Woe to us, for the
daylight is
fading; the evening shadows grow long.
Arise, and let us go by night, and let us destroy her palaces.
Rise up, let us attack by night and destroy her fortresses!’”
For thus hath the LORD of hosts said,
Hew ye down trees, and cast a mount against Jerusalem: this is the city to be visited; she is wholly oppression in the midst of
her.
For this is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Cut down the trees and raise a siege
ramp against Jerusalem. This city must be punished; there is nothing but oppression in
her midst.
As a fountain casteth out
her waters, so she casteth out
her wickedness: violence and
spoil is heard in
her; before me continually is grief and wounds.
As a well gushes its water, so she pours out her evil. Violence and destruction resound in her; sickness and wounds are ever before Me.
Yea, the
stork in the heaven knoweth
her appointed times; and the
turtle and the
crane and the
swallow observe the time of their coming; but my people know not the judgment of the LORD.
Even the
stork in the sky knows
her appointed seasons. The
turtledove, the swift, and the
thrush keep their time of
migration, but My people do not know the requirements of the LORD.
Why do we sit still?
assemble yourselves, and let us enter into the defenced cities, and let us be silent there: for the LORD our God hath put us to silence, and given us water of gall to drink, because we have
sinned against the LORD.
Why are we just sitting
here? Gather together, let us
flee to the fortified cities and perish there, for the LORD our God has
doomed us. He has given us poisoned water to drink, because we have
sinned against the LORD.
Behold the voice of the cry of the daughter of my people because of them that dwell in a far country: Is not the LORD in
Zion? is not
her king in
her? Why have they
provoked me to anger with their
graven images, and with strange
vanities?
Listen to the cry of the daughter of my people from a land far away: “Is the LORD no longer in
Zion? Is
her King no longer there?” “Why have they
provoked Me to anger with their carved images, with their worthless foreign idols?”
Yet hear the word of the LORD, O ye women, and let your ear receive the word of his mouth, and teach your daughters
wailing, and every one
her neighbour
lamentation.
Now, O women, hear the word of the LORD. Open your ears to the word of His mouth. Teach your daughters to
wail, and one another to
lament.
How long shall the land
mourn, and the
herbs of every field wither, for the wickedness of them that dwell therein? the beasts are consumed, and the birds; because they said, He shall not see our last end.
How long will the land
mourn and the grass of every field be
withered? Because of the evil of its residents, the animals and birds have been swept away, for the people have said, “He cannot see what our end will be.”
I have
forsaken mine house, I have left mine
heritage; I have given the
dearly beloved of my soul into the hand of
her enemies.
I have
forsaken My house; I have abandoned My inheritance. I have given the love of My life into the hands of
her enemies.
Mine
heritage is unto me as a lion in the forest; it crieth out against me: therefore have I
hated it.
My inheritance has become to Me like a lion in the forest. She has
roared against Me; therefore I
hate her.
Is not My inheritance to Me like a
speckled bird of prey with other birds of prey circling against
her? Go, gather all the beasts of the field; bring them to
devour her.
And it shall come to pass, after that I have
plucked them out I will return, and have
compassion on them, and will bring them again, every man to his
heritage, and every man to his land.
But after I have uprooted them, I will once again have
compassion on them and return each one to his inheritance and to his land.
Judah mourneth, and the gates thereof
languish; they are black unto the ground; and the cry of Jerusalem is gone up.
“Judah mourns and
her gates
languish.
Her people
wail for the land, and a cry goes up from Jerusalem.
Yea, the hind also
calved in the field, and
forsook it, because there was no grass.
Even the
doe in the field deserts
her newborn fawn because there is no grass.
She that hath borne seven languisheth: she hath given up the ghost;
her sun is gone down while it was yet day: she hath been
ashamed and confounded: and the residue of them will I deliver to the sword before their enemies, saith the LORD.
The mother of seven will grow
faint; she will
breathe her last breath.
Her sun will set while it is still day; she will be disgraced and
humiliated. And the rest I will put to the sword in the presence of their enemies,” declares the LORD.
And thou, even
thyself, shalt discontinue from thine
heritage that I gave thee; and I will cause thee to serve thine enemies in the land which thou knowest not: for ye have
kindled a fire in mine anger, which shall burn for ever.
For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out
her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but
her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of
drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.
He is like a tree planted by the waters that sends out its roots toward the stream. It does not fear when the heat comes, and its leaves are always green. It does not
worry in a year of
drought, nor does it cease to produce fruit.
And I will make this city
desolate, and an
hissing; every one that passeth thereby shall be
astonished and hiss because of all the plagues thereof.
Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will bring upon this city and upon all
her towns all the evil that I have pronounced against it, because they have
hardened their necks, that they might not hear my words.
“This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: ‘Behold, I am about to bring on this city and on all the villages around it every
disaster I have pronounced against them, because they have
stiffened their necks so as not to
heed My words.’”
Because he
slew me not from the
womb; or that my mother might have been my grave, and
her womb to be always great with me.
because he did not kill me in the
womb so that my mother might have been my grave, and
her womb forever enlarged.
As for me, behold, I am in your hand: do with me as seemeth good and meet unto you.
As for me, here I am in your hands; do to me what you think is good and right.
Within two full years will I bring again into this place all the vessels of the LORD’S house, that
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon took away from this place, and carried them to Babylon:
Within two years I will restore to this place all the articles of the house of the LORD that
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon removed from
here and carried to Babylon.
Thus saith the LORD; Behold, I will bring again the captivity of Jacob’s tents, and have mercy on his dwellingplaces; and the city shall be builded upon
her own
heap, and the palace shall remain after the manner thereof.
This is what the LORD says: “I will restore the fortunes of Jacob’s tents and have
compassion on his dwellings. And the city will be rebuilt on
her own ruins, and the palace will stand in its rightful place.
Behold, I will bring them from the north country, and gather them from the coasts of the earth, and with them the blind and the
lame, the woman with child and
her that travaileth with child together: a great company shall return thither.
Behold, I will bring them from the land of the north and gather them from the
farthest parts of the earth, including the blind and the
lame,
expectant mothers and women in labor. They will return as a great assembly!
Therefore they shall come and sing in the height of
Zion, and shall flow together to the goodness of the LORD, for wheat, and for wine, and for oil, and for the young of the flock and of the
herd: and their soul shall be as a watered garden; and they shall not sorrow any more at all.
They will come and
shout for joy on the heights of
Zion; they will be
radiant over the
bounty of the LORD— the grain, new wine, and oil, and the young of the flocks and
herds. Their life will be like a well-watered garden, and never again will they
languish.
Thus saith the LORD; A voice was heard in
Ramah,
lamentation, and bitter
weeping;
Rahel weeping for
her children refused to be comforted for
her children, because they were not.
This is what the LORD says: “A voice is heard in
Ramah,
mourning and great
weeping,
Rachel weeping for
her children, and refusing to be comforted, because they are no more.”
Therefore all the princes sent Jehudi the son of Nethaniah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Cushi, unto
Baruch, saying, Take in thine hand the roll wherein thou hast read in the ears of the people, and come. So
Baruch the son of Neriah took the roll in his hand, and came unto them.
Then all the officials sent word to
Baruch through Jehudi son of Nethaniah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Cushi, saying, “Bring the
scroll that you read in the hearing of the people, and come
here.” So
Baruch son of Neriah took the
scroll and went to them.
Then
Zedekiah the king said, Behold, he is in your hand: for the king is not he that can do any thing against you.
“
Here he is,” replied King
Zedekiah. “He is in your hands, since the king can do nothing to stop you.”
Then the king commanded Ebed-melech the
Ethiopian, saying, Take from hence thirty men with thee, and take up Jeremiah the prophet out of the
dungeon, before he die.
So the king commanded Ebed-melech the
Cushite, “Take thirty men from
here with you and pull Jeremiah the prophet out of the
cistern before he dies.”
But we will certainly do
whatsoever thing goeth forth out of our own mouth, to burn incense unto the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto
her, as we have done, we, and our fathers, our kings, and our princes, in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem: for then had we
plenty of
victuals, and were well, and saw no evil.
Instead, we will do everything we
vowed to do: We will burn incense to the Queen of Heaven and offer drink offerings to
her, just as we, our fathers, our kings, and our officials did in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem. At that time we had
plenty of food and good things, and we saw no
disaster.
But since we left off to burn incense to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto her, we have wanted all things, and have been consumed by the sword and by the famine.
But from the time we stopped burning incense to the Queen of Heaven and pouring out drink offerings to her, we have lacked everything and have been perishing by sword and famine.”
And when we burned incense to the queen of heaven, and poured out drink offerings unto her, did we make her cakes to worship her, and pour out drink offerings unto her, without our men?
“Moreover,” said the women, “when we burned incense to the Queen of Heaven and poured out drink offerings to
her, was it without our husbands’ knowledge that we made
sacrificial cakes in
her image and poured out drink offerings to
her?”
Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, saying; Ye and your wives have both spoken with your mouths, and fulfilled with your hand, saying, We will surely perform our vows that we have
vowed, to burn incense to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto
her: ye will surely
accomplish your vows, and surely perform your vows.
This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: As for you and your wives, you have spoken with your mouths and fulfilled with your hands your words: ‘We will surely perform our vows that we have made to burn incense to the Queen of Heaven and to pour out drink offerings to
her.’ Go
ahead, then, do what you have promised! Keep your vows!
Egypt is like a very fair
heifer, but destruction cometh; it cometh out of the north.
Egypt is a beautiful
heifer, but a
gadfly from the north is coming against
her.
Also
her hired men are in the midst of
her like
fatted bullocks; for they also are turned back, and are fled away together: they did not stand, because the day of their
calamity was come upon them, and the time of their
visitation.
Even the
mercenaries among
her are like
fattened calves. They too will turn back; together they will
flee, they will not stand their ground, for the day of
calamity is coming upon them— the time of their punishment.
The voice thereof shall go like a serpent; for they shall march with an army, and come against her with axes, as hewers of wood.
Egypt will hiss like a
fleeing serpent, for the enemy will advance in force; with axes they will come against
her like
woodsmen cutting down trees.
They shall cut down her forest, saith the LORD, though it cannot be searched; because they are more than the grasshoppers, and are innumerable.
They will
chop down
her forest, declares the LORD, dense though it may be, for they are more numerous than locusts; they cannot be counted.
The LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, saith; Behold, I will
punish the multitude of No, and Pharaoh, and Egypt, with their gods, and their kings; even Pharaoh, and all them that trust in him:
The LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: “Behold, I am about to
punish Amon god of
Thebes, along with Pharaoh, Egypt with
her gods and kings, and those who trust in Pharaoh.
There shall be no more praise of Moab: in
Heshbon they have devised evil against it; come, and let us cut it off from being a nation. Also thou shalt be cut down, O
Madmen; the sword shall pursue thee.
There is no longer praise for Moab; in
Heshbon they
devise evil against
her: ‘Come, let us cut
her off from nationhood.’ You too, O people of
Madmen, will be silenced; the sword will pursue you.
Moab is destroyed; her little ones have caused a cry to be heard.
Moab will be
shattered;
her little ones will cry out.
Give wings unto Moab, that it may
flee and get away: for the cities thereof shall be
desolate, without any to dwell therein.
Put salt on Moab, for she will be laid waste;
her cities will become
desolate, with no one to dwell in them.
