Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.
To the woman He said: “I will sharply increase your
pain in
childbirth; in
pain you will bring forth children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.”
And it came to pass on the third day, when they were
sore, that two of the sons of Jacob,
Simeon and Levi, Dinah’s brethren, took each man his sword, and came upon the city boldly, and
slew all the males.
Three days later, while they were still in
pain, two of Jacob’s sons (Dinah’s brothers
Simeon and Levi) took their swords, went into the
unsuspecting city, and slaughtered every male.
The LORD shall
smite thee in the knees, and in the legs, with a
sore botch that cannot be
healed, from the sole of thy foot unto the top of thy head.
The LORD will
afflict you with
painful, incurable boils on your knees and thighs, from the soles of your feet to the top of your head.
And his daughter in law,
Phinehas’ wife, was with child, near to be delivered: and when she heard the
tidings that the ark of God was taken, and that her father in law and her husband were dead, she bowed herself and
travailed; for her
pains came upon her.
Now
Eli’s daughter-in-law, the wife of
Phinehas, was
pregnant and about to give birth. When she heard the news of the capture of God’s ark and the deaths of her father-in-law and her husband, she
collapsed and gave birth, for her labor
pains overtook her.
And when
Jehu was come to
Jezreel,
Jezebel heard of it; and she
painted her face, and
tired her head, and looked out at a window.
Now when
Jehu arrived in
Jezreel,
Jezebel heard of it. So she
painted her eyes, adorned her head, and looked down from a window.
And Jabez was more honourable than his brethren: and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, Because I bare him with sorrow.
Now Jabez was more honorable than his brothers. His mother had named him Jabez, saying, “Because I bore him in pain.”
And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, Oh that thou wouldest
bless me indeed, and
enlarge my coast, and that thine hand might be with me, and that thou wouldest keep me from evil, that it may not
grieve me! And God granted him that which he requested.
And Jabez called out to the God of Israel, “If only You would
bless me and
enlarge my territory! May Your hand be with me and keep me from
harm, so that I will be free from
pain.” And God granted the request of Jabez.
Now, behold, in my trouble I have prepared for the house of the LORD an hundred thousand talents of gold, and a thousand thousand talents of silver; and of brass and iron without weight; for it is in abundance: timber also and stone have I prepared; and thou mayest add
thereto.
Now behold, I have taken great
pains to provide for the house of the LORD—100,000 talents of gold, 1,000,000 talents of silver, and bronze and iron too great to be
weighed. I have also provided timber and stone, and you may add to them.
And it came to pass, that in process of time, after the end of two years, his
bowels fell out by reason of his sickness: so he died of
sore diseases. And his people made no burning for him, like the burning of his fathers.
This continued day after day until two full years had passed. Finally, his intestines came out because of his disease, and he died in severe pain. And his people did not make a fire in his honor as they had done for his fathers.
Then should I yet have comfort;
yea, I would
harden myself in sorrow: let him not
spare; for I have not concealed the words of the Holy One.
It still brings me comfort, and joy through
unrelenting pain, that I have not denied the words of the Holy One.
How forcible are right words! but what
doth your
arguing reprove?
How
painful are
honest words! But what does your argument prove?
But his flesh upon him shall have
pain, and his soul within him shall
mourn.
He feels only the pain of his own body and mourns only for himself.”
The wicked man travaileth with
pain all his days, and the number of years is hidden to the
oppressor.
A wicked man writhes in
pain all his days; only a few years are reserved for the
ruthless.
Though I speak, my grief is not asswaged: and though I
forbear, what am I eased?
Even if I speak, my pain is not relieved, and if I hold back, how will it go away?
My bones are pierced in me in the night season: and my sinews take no rest.
Night pierces my bones, and my
gnawing pains never rest.
He is
chastened also with
pain upon his bed, and the multitude of his bones with strong
pain:
A man is also
chastened on his bed with
pain and constant distress in his bones,
Consider my
affliction and trouble, and take away all my sins.
For my loins are filled with a
loathsome disease: and there is no soundness in my flesh.
For my loins are full of burning pain, and no soundness remains in my body.
For I am ready to
halt, and my sorrow is continually before me.
For I am ready to fall, and my pain is ever with me.
Fear took hold upon them there, and
pain, as of a woman in
travail.
My heart is
sore pained within me: and the terrors of death are fallen upon me.
My heart murmurs within me, and the terrors of death
assail me.
For they
persecute him whom thou hast
smitten; and they talk to the grief of those whom thou hast wounded.
For they
persecute the one You struck and recount the
pain of those You wounded.
But I am poor and sorrowful: let thy salvation, O God, set me up on high.
But I am in pain and distress; let Your salvation protect me, O God.
When I thought to know this, it was too painful for me;
When I tried to understand all this, it was
troublesome in my sight
The sorrows of death compassed me, and the
pains of
hell gat hold upon me: I found trouble and sorrow.
They have
stricken me, shalt thou say, and I was not sick; they have beaten me, and I felt it not: when shall I
awake? I will seek it yet again.
“They struck me, but I feel no
pain! They beat me, but I did not know it! When can I
wake up to search for another drink?”
Therefore remove sorrow from thy heart, and put away evil from thy flesh: for
childhood and youth are vanity.
So
banish sorrow from your heart, and cast off
pain from your body, for youth and
vigor are fleeting.
And they shall be afraid: pangs and sorrows shall take hold of them; they shall be in
pain as a woman that travaileth: they shall be
amazed one at another; their faces shall be as flames.
Terror,
pain, and
anguish will seize them; they will
writhe like a woman in labor. They will look at one another, their faces
flushed with fear.
And it shall come to pass in the day that the LORD shall give thee rest from thy sorrow, and from thy fear, and from the hard
bondage wherein thou
wast made to serve,
On the day that the LORD gives you rest from your
pain and
torment, and from the hard labor into which you were forced,
In the day shalt thou make thy plant to grow, and in the morning shalt thou make thy seed to
flourish: but the harvest shall be a
heap in the day of grief and of
desperate sorrow.
though on the day you plant you make them grow, and on that morning you help your seed
sprout— yet the harvest will
vanish on the day of disease and incurable
pain.
Therefore are my loins filled with pain: pangs have taken hold upon me, as the pangs of a woman that travaileth: I was bowed down at the hearing of it; I was dismayed at the seeing of it.
Therefore my body is filled with
anguish.
Pain grips me, like the
pains of a woman in labor. I am
bewildered to hear, I am dismayed to see.
As at the report concerning Egypt, so shall they be
sorely pained at the report of Tyre.
When the report reaches Egypt, they will
writhe in
agony over the news of Tyre.
Like as a woman with child, that draweth near the time of her
delivery, is in
pain, and crieth out in her pangs; so have we been in thy sight, O LORD.
As a woman with child about to give birth writhes and
cries out in
pain, so were we in Your presence, O LORD.
We have been with child, we have been in
pain, we have as it were brought forth wind; we have not wrought any
deliverance in the earth; neither have the inhabitants of the world fallen.
We were with child; we
writhed in
pain; but we gave birth to wind. We have given no salvation to the earth, nor brought any life into the world.
Before she
travailed, she brought forth; before her
pain came, she was delivered of a man child.
“Before she was in labor, she gave birth; before she was in pain, she delivered a boy.
My
bowels, my
bowels! I am
pained at my very heart; my heart maketh a noise in me; I cannot hold my peace, because thou hast heard, O my soul, the sound of the
trump, the
alarm of war.
My
anguish, my
anguish! I
writhe in
pain! Oh, the
pain in my chest! My heart pounds within me; I cannot be silent. For I have heard the sound of the horn, the
alarm of battle.
And when thou art
spoiled, what
wilt thou do? Though thou clothest
thyself with
crimson, though thou deckest thee with ornaments of gold, though thou rentest thy face with
painting, in vain shalt thou make
thyself fair; thy lovers will
despise thee, they will seek thy life.
O LORD, are not thine eyes upon the truth? thou hast
stricken them, but they have not
grieved; thou hast consumed them, but they have refused to receive correction: they have made their faces harder than a rock; they have refused to return.
O LORD, do not Your eyes look for truth? You struck them, but they felt no
pain. You finished them off, but they refused to accept discipline. They have made their faces harder than stone and refused to
repent.
We have heard the fame thereof: our hands wax feeble:
anguish hath taken hold of us, and
pain, as of a woman in
travail.
We have heard the report; our hands
hang limp.
Anguish has gripped us,
pain like that of a woman in labor.
They have sown wheat, but shall
reap thorns: they have put themselves to
pain, but shall not profit: and they shall be
ashamed of your revenues because of the fierce anger of the LORD.
They have sown wheat but harvested thorns. They have exhausted themselves to no
avail. Bear the shame of your harvest because of the fierce anger of the LORD.”
Why is my
pain perpetual, and my wound incurable, which refuseth to be
healed?
wilt thou be altogether unto me as a
liar, and as waters that fail?
Why is my
pain unending, and my wound incurable, refusing to be
healed? You have indeed become like a
mirage to me— water that is not there.
That saith, I will build me a wide house and large chambers, and cutteth him out windows; and it is cieled with
cedar, and
painted with
vermilion.
who says, ‘I will build myself a great palace, with
spacious upper rooms.’ So he cuts windows in it, panels it with
cedar, and
paints it with
vermilion.
O inhabitant of
Lebanon, that makest thy nest in the cedars, how
gracious shalt thou be when pangs come upon thee, the
pain as of a woman in
travail!
Why criest thou for thine
affliction? thy sorrow is incurable for the multitude of thine iniquity: because thy sins were increased, I have done these things unto thee.
Why do you cry out over your wound? Your pain has no cure! Because of your great iniquity and your numerous sins I have done these things to you.
Behold, the
whirlwind of the LORD goeth forth with
fury, a continuing
whirlwind: it shall fall with
pain upon the head of the wicked.
Behold, the storm of the LORD has gone out with
fury, a
whirlwind swirling down upon the heads of the wicked.
Thou
didst say,
Woe is me now! for the LORD hath added grief to my sorrow; I
fainted in my
sighing, and I find no rest.
You have said, ‘
Woe is me because the LORD has added sorrow to my
pain! I am worn out with
groaning and have found no rest.’”
Damascus is waxed feeble, and turneth herself to
flee, and fear hath seized on her:
anguish and sorrows have taken her, as a woman in
travail.
Damascus has become feeble; she has turned to
flee.
Panic has gripped her;
anguish and
pain have seized her like a woman in labor.
The king of Babylon hath heard the report of them, and his hands waxed feeble:
anguish took hold of him, and pangs as of a woman in
travail.
The king of Babylon has heard the report, and his hands
hang limp.
Anguish has gripped him,
pain like that of a woman in labor.
Babylon is suddenly fallen and destroyed:
howl for her; take
balm for her
pain, if so she may be
healed.
Suddenly Babylon has fallen and been
shattered.
Wail for her; get her
balm for her
pain; perhaps she can be
healed.
They that be slain with the sword are better than they that be slain with hunger: for these pine away,
stricken through for want of the fruits of the field.
Those slain by the sword are better off than those who die of hunger, who waste away, pierced with pain because the fields lack produce.
And
furthermore, that ye have sent for men to come from far, unto whom a
messenger was sent; and, lo, they came: for whom thou
didst wash
thyself,
paintedst thy eyes, and deckedst
thyself with ornaments,
Furthermore, you sisters sent messengers for men who came from
afar; and behold, when they arrived, you bathed for them,
painted your eyes, and adorned
yourself with
jewelry.
And there shall be no more a
pricking brier unto the house of Israel, nor any
grieving thorn of all that are round about them, that
despised them; and they shall know that I am the Lord GOD.
For the people of Israel will no longer face a
pricking brier or a
painful thorn from all around them who treat them with contempt. Then they will know that I am the Lord GOD.’
And the sword shall come upon Egypt, and great
pain shall be in
Ethiopia, when the slain shall fall in Egypt, and they shall take away her multitude, and her foundations shall be broken down.
A sword will come against Egypt, and there will be
anguish in
Cush when the slain fall in Egypt, its wealth is taken away, and its foundations are
torn down.
In that day shall messengers go forth from me in ships to make the careless Ethiopians afraid, and great pain shall come upon them, as in the day of Egypt: for, lo, it cometh.
And I will set fire in Egypt: Sin shall have great
pain, and No shall be rent
asunder, and
Noph shall have distresses daily.
The sorrows of a
travailing woman shall come upon him: he is an unwise son; for he should not stay long in the place of the breaking forth of children.
Labor
pains come upon him, but he is an unwise son. When the time arrives, he fails to present himself at the opening of the
womb.
Before their face the people shall be much pained: all faces shall gather blackness.
Nations
writhe in
horror before them; every face turns pale.
Be in
pain, and labour to bring forth, O daughter of
Zion, like a woman in
travail: for now shalt thou go forth out of the city, and thou shalt dwell in the field, and thou shalt go even to Babylon; there shalt thou be delivered; there the LORD shall
redeem thee from the hand of thine enemies.
Writhe in
agony, O Daughter of
Zion, like a woman in labor. For now you will leave the city and camp in the open fields. You will go to Babylon; there you will be
rescued; there the LORD will
redeem you from the hand of your enemies!
She is empty, and void, and waste: and the heart melteth, and the knees
smite together, and much
pain is in all loins, and the faces of them all gather blackness.
And his fame went throughout all Syria: and they brought unto him all sick people that were taken with
divers diseases and torments, and those which were possessed with devils, and those which were lunatick, and those that had the
palsy; and he
healed them.
News about Him spread all over Syria, and people brought to Him all who were ill with various diseases, those suffering acute
pain, the
demon-possessed, those having seizures, and the
paralyzed—and He
healed them.
All these are the beginning of sorrows.
All these are the beginning of birth pains.
For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be earthquakes in
divers places, and there shall be famines and troubles: these are the beginnings of sorrows.
Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, as well as famines. These are the beginning of birth pains.
A woman when she is in
travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come: but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the
anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world.
A woman has
pain in
childbirth because her time has come; but when she brings forth her child, she forgets her
anguish because of her joy that a child has been born into the world.
Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the
pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be
holden of it.
But God raised Him from the dead, releasing Him from the
agony of death, because it was impossible for Him to be held in its
clutches.
For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.
We know that the whole creation has been
groaning together in the
pains of
childbirth until the present time.
But I determined this with myself, that I would not come again to you in
heaviness.
So I made up my mind not to make another painful visit to you.
In
weariness and
painfulness, in watchings often, in hunger and
thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness.
in labor and
toil and often without sleep, in hunger and
thirst and often without food, in cold and exposure.
My little children, of whom I
travail in birth again until Christ be formed in you,
My children, for whom I am again in the
pains of
childbirth until Christ is formed in you,
For I bear him record, that he hath a great zeal for you, and them that are in
Laodicea, and them in
Hierapolis.
For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as
travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.
While people are saying, “Peace and security,” destruction will come upon them suddenly, like labor
pains on a
pregnant woman, and they will not escape.
Now no
chastening for the present seemeth to be
joyous, but
grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.
No discipline seems enjoyable at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it yields a harvest of righteousness and peace to those who have been trained by it.
For if
anyone endures the
pain of unjust suffering because he is conscious of God, this is to be
commended.
And she being with child
cried,
travailing in birth, and
pained to be delivered.
She was
pregnant and crying out in the
pain and
agony of giving birth.
And the fifth angel poured out his
vial upon the seat of the beast; and his kingdom was full of darkness; and they
gnawed their tongues for
pain,
And the fifth angel poured out his
bowl on the throne of the beast, and its kingdom was
plunged into darkness, and men began to
gnaw their tongues in
anguish And
blasphemed the God of heaven because of their
pains and their sores, and
repented not of their deeds.
and
curse the God of heaven for their
pains and sores; yet they did not
repent of their deeds.
And God shall
wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more
pain: for the former things are passed away.
‘He will
wipe away every
tear from their eyes,’ and there will be no more death or
mourning or crying or
pain, for the former things have passed away.”
And I said, No, Lord: but of very grief have I spoken: for my
reins pain me every hour, while I labour to
comprehend the way of the most High, and to seek out part of his judgment.
Then were the entrances of this world made narrow, full of sorrow and
travail: they are but few and evil, full of perils,: and very
painful.
For as the things
aforesaid shalt receive you, so
thirst and
pain are prepared for them: for it was not his will that men should come to
nought:
The same must know it after death by pain.
But if thou sayest unto me, My
lamentation is not like the earth’s, because I have lost the fruit of my
womb, which I brought forth with
pains, and bare with sorrows;
And whereas thou sawest that the great head appeared no more, it signifieth that one of them shall die upon his bed, and yet with pain.
As when a woman with child in the ninth month bringeth forth her son, with two or three hours of her birth great
pains compass her
womb, which
pains, when the child cometh forth, they
slack not a moment:
But wisdom delivered from pain those that attended upon her.
Or made it like some
vile beast, laying it over with
vermilion, and with
paint colouring it red, and covering every spot therein;
There is one that laboureth, and taketh
pains, and maketh
haste, and is so much the more behind.
Sound sleep cometh of moderate eating: he riseth early, and his wits are with him: but the
pain of watching, and
choler, and pangs of the
belly, are with an
unsatiable man.
With such
doth he
heal men, and taketh away their
pains.
Then
trembled their hearts and hands, and they were in
pain, as women in
travail.
And laid open the book of the law, wherein the heathen had sought to
paint the likeness of their images.
Now when king Alexander had heard what promises
Demetrius had sent unto
Jonathan: when also it was told him of the battles and noble acts which he and his brethren had done, and of the
pains that they had
endured,
Therefore to us, that have taken upon us this
painful labour of
abridging, it was not easy, but a matter of
sweat and watching;
Even as it is no ease unto him that prepareth a
banquet, and seeketh the benefit of others: yet for the pleasuring of many we will undertake
gladly this great
pains;
For as the master builder of a new house must care for the whole building; but he that undertaketh to set it out, and
paint it, must seek out fit things for the
adorning thereof: even so I think it is with us.
But when he was ready to die with stripes, he
groaned, and said, It is manifest unto the Lord, that hath the holy knowledge, that whereas I might have been delivered from death, I now
endure sore pains in body by being beaten: but in soul am well content to suffer these things, because I fear him.
Insomuch that the king, and they that were with him,
marvelled at the young man’s courage, for that he nothing regarded the
pains.
For our brethren, who now have suffered a short
pain, are dead under God’s covenant of
everlasting life: but thou, through the judgment of God, shalt receive just punishment for thy pride.
But the Lord
Almighty, the God of Isreal,
smote him with an incurable and invisible plague: or as soon as he had spoken these words, a
pain of the
bowels that was
remediless came upon him, and
sore torments of the inner parts;
Howbeit he nothing at all ceased from his
bragging, but still was filled with pride, breathing out fire in his
rage against the Jews, and commanding to
haste the journey: but it came to pass that he fell down from his
chariot, carried violently; so that having a
sore fall, all the members of his body were much
pained.
