All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full; unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again.
All the rivers flow into the sea, yet the sea is never full; to the place from which the streams come, there again they flow.
And I gave my heart to seek and
search out by wisdom concerning all things that are done under heaven: this
sore travail hath God given to the sons of man to be exercised
therewith.
And I set my mind to seek and
explore by wisdom all that is done under heaven. What a heavy burden God has laid upon the sons of men to occupy them!
To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
To everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven:
A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away;
a time to search and a time to count as lost, a time to keep and a time to discard,
I applied mine heart to know, and to
search, and to seek out wisdom, and the reason of things, and to know the wickedness of folly, even of
foolishness and madness:
I directed my mind to understand, to
explore, to
search out wisdom and explanations, and to understand the
stupidity of wickedness and the folly of madness.
Which yet my soul seeketh, but I find not: one man among a thousand have I found; but a woman among all those have I not found.
While my soul was still searching but not finding, among a thousand I have found one upright man, but among all these I have not found one such woman.
Then I
beheld all the work of God, that a man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun: because though a man labour to seek it out, yet he shall not find it;
yea further; though a wise man think to know it, yet shall he not be able to find it.
I saw every work of God, and that a man is unable to
comprehend the work that is done under the sun.
Despite his efforts to
search it out, he cannot find its meaning; even if the wise man claims to know, he is unable to
comprehend.
Blessed art thou, O land, when thy king is the son of nobles, and thy princes eat in due
season, for strength, and not for
drunkenness!
Blessed are you, O land whose king is a son of nobles, and whose princes feast at the proper time— for strength and not for
drunkenness.
And moreover, because the preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge;
yea, he gave good
heed, and sought out, and set in order many
proverbs.
Not only was the Teacher wise, but he also taught the people knowledge; he
pondered,
searched out, and arranged many
proverbs.
The preacher sought to find out acceptable words: and that which was written was upright, even words of truth.
The Teacher searched to find delightful sayings and to record accurate words of truth.
The flowers appear on the earth; the time of the singing of birds is come, and the voice of the
turtle is heard in our land;
The flowers have appeared in the
countryside; the
season of singing has come, and the
cooing of turtledoves is heard in our land.
He made the pillars thereof of silver, the bottom thereof of gold, the covering of it of purple, the midst thereof being
paved with love, for the daughters of Jerusalem.
He has made its posts of silver, its base of gold, its
seat of purple
fabric. Its interior is inlaid with love by the daughters of Jerusalem.
A garden inclosed is my sister, my
spouse; a spring shut up, a fountain
sealed.
My sister, my
bride, you are a garden locked up, a spring enclosed, a fountain
sealed.
Set me as a
seal upon thine heart, as a
seal upon thine arm: for love is strong as death; jealousy is cruel as the grave: the coals thereof are coals of fire, which hath a most
vehement flame.
Set me as a
seal over your heart, as a
seal upon your arm. For love is as strong as death, its jealousy as
unrelenting as
Sheol. Its sparks are
fiery flames, the fiercest
blaze of all.
And in that day they shall
roar against them like the
roaring of the
sea: and if one look unto the land, behold darkness and sorrow, and the light is
darkened in the heavens thereof.
In that day they will
roar over it, like the
roaring of the
sea. If one looks over the land, he will see darkness and distress; even the light will be obscured by clouds.
In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple.
In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord
seated on a throne, high and
exalted; and the train of His
robe filled the temple.
Bind up the testimony, seal the law among my disciples.
Bind up the testimony and seal the law among my disciples.
Nevertheless, there will be no more
gloom for those in distress. In the past He humbled the land of
Zebulun and the land of
Naphtali, but in the future He will honor the Way of the
Sea, beyond the Jordan,
Galilee of the nations:
For though thy people Israel be as the sand of the
sea, yet a
remnant of them shall return: the consumption decreed shall overflow with righteousness.
Though your people, O Israel, be like the sand of the
sea, only a
remnant will return. Destruction has been decreed, overflowing with righteousness.
And the LORD of hosts shall
stir up a
scourge for him according to the slaughter of
Midian at the rock of Oreb: and as his rod was upon the
sea, so shall he lift it up after the manner of Egypt.
And the LORD of Hosts will
brandish a
whip against them, as when He struck
Midian at the rock of Oreb. He will raise His staff over the
sea, as He did in Egypt.
They shall not
hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain: for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD, as the waters cover the
sea.
They will neither
harm nor destroy on all My holy mountain, for the earth will be full of the knowledge of the LORD as the
sea is full of water.
And it shall come to pass in that day, that the Lord shall set his hand again the second time to recover the
remnant of his people, which shall be left, from Assyria, and from Egypt, and from Pathros, and from
Cush, and from
Elam, and from
Shinar, and from
Hamath, and from the islands of the
sea.
On that day the Lord will extend His hand a second time to recover the
remnant of His people from Assyria, from Egypt, from Pathros, from
Cush, from
Elam, from
Shinar, from
Hamath, and from the islands of the
sea.
And the LORD shall utterly destroy the tongue of the Egyptian
sea; and with his mighty wind shall he
shake his hand over the river, and shall
smite it in the seven streams, and make men go over
dryshod.
The LORD will
devote to destruction the gulf of the
Sea of Egypt; with a
scorching wind He will
sweep His hand over the Euphrates. He will split it into seven streams for men to cross with dry
sandals.
For the fields of
Heshbon languish, and the vine of Sibmah: the lords of the heathen have broken down the principal plants thereof, they are come even unto Jazer, they
wandered through the wilderness: her branches are stretched out, they are gone over the
sea.
For the fields of
Heshbon have
withered, along with the grapevines of Sibmah. The rulers of the nations have
trampled its choicest vines, which had reached as far as Jazer and spread toward the desert. Their shoots had spread out and passed over the
sea.
Woe to the multitude of many people, which make a noise like the noise of the
seas; and to the
rushing of nations, that make a
rushing like the
rushing of mighty waters!
That sendeth ambassadors by the
sea, even in vessels of bulrushes upon the waters, saying, Go, ye swift messengers, to a nation scattered and
peeled, to a people terrible from their beginning hitherto; a nation meted out and
trodden down, whose land the rivers have
spoiled!
which sends couriers by
sea, in
papyrus vessels on the waters. Go, swift messengers, to a people tall and smooth-
skinned, to a people widely feared, to a powerful nation of strange speech, whose land is divided by rivers.
And the waters shall fail from the sea, and the river shall be wasted and dried up.
The waters of the Nile will dry up, and the riverbed will be
parched and empty.
The burden of the desert of the sea. As whirlwinds in the south pass through; so it cometh from the desert, from a terrible land.
This is the burden against the Desert by the
Sea: Like whirlwinds
sweeping through the Negev, an
invader comes from the desert, from a land of terror.
Be still, ye inhabitants of the isle; thou whom the merchants of Zidon, that pass over the
sea, have
replenished.
Be silent, O dwellers of the coastland, you merchants of
Sidon, whose traders have crossed the
sea.
Be thou
ashamed, O Zidon: for the
sea hath spoken, even the strength of the
sea, saying, I
travail not, nor bring forth children, neither do I
nourish up young men, nor bring up virgins.
Be
ashamed, O
Sidon, the
stronghold of the
sea, for the
sea has spoken: “I have not been in labor or given birth. I have not raised young men or brought up young women.”
He stretched out his hand over the
sea, he
shook the kingdoms: the LORD hath given a commandment against the merchant city, to destroy the strong holds thereof.
The LORD has stretched out His hand over the
sea; He has made kingdoms
tremble. He has given a command that the strongholds of
Canaan be destroyed.
They shall lift up their voice, they shall sing for the majesty of the LORD, they shall cry
aloud from the
sea.
They raise their voices, they
shout for joy; from the west they
proclaim the majesty of the LORD.
Wherefore
glorify ye the LORD in the fires, even the name of the LORD God of Israel in the isles of the
sea.
Therefore
glorify the LORD in the east.
Extol the name of the LORD, the God of Israel in the islands of the
sea.
And the vision of all is become unto you as the words of a book that is sealed, which men deliver to one that is learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee: and he saith, I cannot; for it is sealed:
And the entire vision will be to you like the words
sealed in a
scroll. If it is handed to someone to read, he will say, “I cannot, because it is
sealed.”
Seek ye out of the book of the LORD, and read: no one of these shall fail, none shall want her
mate: for my mouth it hath commanded, and his spirit it hath gathered them.
Search and read the
scroll of the LORD: Not one of these will go missing, not one will lack her
mate, because He has ordered it by His mouth, and He will gather them by His Spirit.
Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the
everlasting God, the LORD, the
Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is
weary? there is no
searching of his understanding.
Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the
everlasting God, the
Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow
tired or
weary; His understanding is beyond
searching out.
Sing unto the LORD a new song, and his praise from the end of the earth, ye that go down to the sea, and all that is therein; the isles, and the inhabitants thereof.
Sing to the LORD a new song— His praise from the ends of the earth— you who go down to the sea, and all that is in it, you islands, and all who dwell in them.
Thus saith the LORD, which maketh a way in the sea, and a path in the mighty waters;
Thus says the LORD, who makes a way in the
sea and a path through the
surging waters,
That saith to the deep, Be dry, and I will dry up thy rivers:
who says to the depths of the sea, ‘Be dry, and I will dry up your currents,’
O that thou hadst
hearkened to my commandments! then had thy peace been as a river, and thy righteousness as the waves of the
sea:
If only you had paid attention to My commandments, your peace would have been like a river, and your righteousness like waves of the sea.
Wherefore, when I came, was there no man? when I called, was there none to answer? Is my hand
shortened at all, that it cannot
redeem? or have I no power to deliver? behold, at my
rebuke I dry up the
sea, I make the rivers a wilderness: their fish stinketh, because there is no water, and dieth for
thirst.
Why was no one there when I arrived? Why did no one answer when I called? Is My hand too short to
redeem you? Or do I lack the strength to deliver you? Behold, My
rebuke dries up the
sea; I turn the rivers into a desert; the fish
rot for lack of water and die of
thirst.
The Lord GOD hath given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in
season to him that is
weary: he wakeneth morning by morning, he wakeneth mine ear to hear as the learned.
The Lord GOD has given Me the tongue of
discipleship, to
sustain the
weary with a word. He awakens Me morning by morning; He awakens My ear to
listen as a disciple.
Art thou not it which hath dried the
sea, the waters of the great deep; that hath made the depths of the
sea a way for the
ransomed to pass over?
Was it not You who dried up the sea, the waters of the great deep, who made a road in the depths of the sea for the redeemed to cross over?
But I am the LORD thy God, that divided the
sea, whose waves
roared: The LORD of hosts is his name.
For I am the LORD your God who stirs up the
sea so that its waves
roar— the LORD of Hosts is His name.
But the wicked are like the troubled
sea, when it cannot rest, whose waters cast up
mire and
dirt.
But the wicked are like the storm-
tossed sea, for it cannot be still, and its waves
churn up
mire and
muck.
Then thou shalt see, and flow together, and thine heart shall fear, and be enlarged; because the abundance of the sea shall be converted unto thee, the forces of the Gentiles shall come unto thee.
Then you will look and be
radiant, and your heart will
tremble and swell with joy, because the riches of the
sea will be brought to you, and the wealth of the nations will come to you.
Then he remembered the days of old, Moses, and his people, saying, Where is he that brought them up out of the
sea with the
shepherd of his flock? where is he that put his holy Spirit within him?
Then His people remembered the days of old, the days of Moses. Where is He who brought them through the
sea with the
shepherds of His flock? Where is the One who set His Holy Spirit among them,
A wild
ass used to the wilderness, that snuffeth up the wind at her pleasure; in her occasion who can turn her away? all they that seek her will not
weary themselves; in her month they shall find her.
a wild
donkey at home in the wilderness,
sniffing the wind in the heat of her desire. Who can restrain her passion? All who seek her need not
weary themselves; in mating
season they will find her.
Also in thy skirts is found the blood of the souls of the poor innocents: I have not found it by secret search, but upon all these.
Moreover, your skirts are
stained with the blood of the innocent poor, though you did not find them breaking in. But in spite of all these things
At that time shall it be said to this people and to Jerusalem, A dry wind of the high places in the wilderness toward the daughter of my people, not to
fan, nor to
cleanse,
At that time it will be said to this people and to Jerusalem, “A
searing wind from the barren heights in the desert blows toward the daughter of My people, but not to
winnow or to
sift;
Run ye to and
fro through the streets of Jerusalem, and see now, and know, and seek in the broad places thereof, if ye can find a man, if there be any that executeth judgment, that seeketh the truth; and I will
pardon it.
“Go up and down the streets of Jerusalem. Look now and take note;
search her squares. If you can find a single person,
anyone who acts justly,
anyone who seeks the truth, then I will
forgive the city.
Fear ye not me? saith the LORD: will ye not
tremble at my presence, which have placed the sand for the bound of the
sea by a perpetual decree, that it cannot pass it: and though the waves thereof
toss themselves, yet can they not prevail; though they
roar, yet can they not pass over it?
Do you not fear Me?” declares the LORD. “Do you not
tremble before Me, the One who set the sand as the boundary for the
sea, an
enduring barrier it cannot cross? The waves
surge, but they cannot prevail. They
roar but cannot cross it.
Neither say they in their heart, Let us now fear the LORD our God, that giveth rain, both the former and the latter, in his season: he reserveth unto us the appointed weeks of the harvest.
They have not said in their hearts, ‘Let us fear the LORD our God, who gives the rains, both autumn and spring, in season, who keeps for us the appointed weeks of harvest.’
They shall lay hold on bow and
spear; they are cruel, and have no mercy; their voice roareth like the
sea; and they
ride upon horses, set in
array as men for war against thee, O daughter of
Zion.
They
grasp the bow and
spear; they are cruel and
merciless. Their voice roars like the
sea, and they
ride upon horses, lined up like men in formation against you, O Daughter of
Zion.”
Yea, the
stork in the heaven knoweth her appointed times; and the
turtle and the
crane and the
swallow observe the time of their coming; but my people know not the judgment of the LORD.
Even the
stork in the sky knows her appointed
seasons. The
turtledove, the swift, and the
thrush keep their time of
migration, but My people do not know the requirements of the LORD.
Say unto the king and to the queen, Humble
yourselves, sit down: for your
principalities shall come down, even the crown of your glory.
Say to the king and to the queen mother: “Take a lowly seat, for your glorious crowns have fallen from your heads.”
Their widows are increased to me above the sand of the
seas: I have brought upon them against the mother of the young men a
spoiler at
noonday: I have caused him to fall upon it suddenly, and terrors upon the city.
I will make their widows more numerous than the sand of the
sea. I will bring a destroyer at
noon against the mothers of young men. I will suddenly bring upon them
anguish and dismay.
I the LORD
search the heart, I try the
reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.
I, the LORD, search the heart; I examine the mind to reward a man according to his way, by what his deeds deserve.
And all the kings of Tyrus, and all the kings of Zidon, and the kings of the isles which are beyond the sea,
all the kings of Tyre and
Sidon; the kings of the coastlands across the
sea;
For thus saith the LORD of hosts concerning the pillars, and concerning the sea, and concerning the bases, and concerning the residue of the vessels that remain in this city,
For this is what the LORD of Hosts says about the pillars, the sea, the bases, and the rest of the articles that remain in this city,
And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.
You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart.
Thus saith the LORD, which giveth the sun for a light by day, and the ordinances of the moon and of the stars for a light by night, which divideth the
sea when the waves thereof
roar; The LORD of hosts is his name:
Thus says the LORD, who gives the sun for light by day, who sets in order the moon and stars for light by night, who stirs up the
sea so that its waves
roar—the LORD of Hosts is His name:
Thus saith the LORD; If heaven above can be measured, and the foundations of the earth searched out beneath, I will also cast off all the seed of Israel for all that they have done, saith the LORD.
This is what the LORD says: “Only if the heavens above could be measured and the foundations of the earth below
searched out would I
reject all of Israel’s descendants because of all they have done,” declares the LORD.
And I
subscribed the evidence, and
sealed it, and took witnesses, and
weighed him the money in the balances.
I signed and
sealed the deed, called in witnesses, and
weighed out the silver on the scales.
So I took the evidence of the purchase, both that which was sealed according to the law and custom, and that which was open:
Then I took the deed of purchase—the sealed copy with its terms and conditions, as well as the open copy—
Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Take these evidences, this evidence of the purchase, both which is
sealed, and this evidence which is open; and put them in an
earthen vessel, that they may continue many days.
“This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: Take these deeds—both the
sealed copy and the open copy of the deed of purchase—and put them in a clay
jar to preserve them for a long time.
Men shall
buy fields for money, and
subscribe evidences, and
seal them, and take witnesses in the land of Benjamin, and in the places about Jerusalem, and in the cities of Judah, and in the cities of the mountains, and in the cities of the valley, and in the cities of the south: for I will cause their captivity to return, saith the LORD.
Fields will be purchased with silver, and deeds will be signed, sealed, and witnessed in the land of Benjamin, in the areas surrounding Jerusalem, and in the cities of Judah—the cities of the hill country, the foothills, and the Negev—because I will restore them from captivity, declares the LORD.”
Thus saith the LORD; If ye can break my covenant of the day, and my covenant of the night, and that there should not be day and night in their season;
“This is what the LORD says: If you can break My covenant with the day and My covenant with the night, so that day and night cease to occupy their appointed time,
As the host of heaven cannot be numbered, neither the sand of the sea measured: so will I multiply the seed of David my servant, and the Levites that minister unto me.
As the hosts of heaven cannot be counted and as the sand on the
seashore cannot be measured, so too will I multiply the descendants of My servant David and the Levites who minister before Me.”
As I live, saith the King, whose name is the LORD of hosts, Surely as
Tabor is among the mountains, and as
Carmel by the
sea, so shall he come.
As surely as I live, declares the King, whose name is the LORD of Hosts, there will come one who is like
Tabor among the mountains and like
Carmel by the
sea.
They shall cut down her forest, saith the LORD, though it cannot be searched; because they are more than the grasshoppers, and are innumerable.
They will
chop down her forest, declares the LORD, dense though it may be, for they are more numerous than locusts; they cannot be counted.
How can it be quiet, seeing the LORD hath given it a charge against Ashkelon, and against the sea shore? there hath he appointed it.
How can it rest when the LORD has commanded it? He has appointed it against Ashkelon and the shore of its coastland.”
O vine of Sibmah, I will
weep for thee with the
weeping of Jazer: thy plants are gone over the
sea, they reach even to the
sea of Jazer: the
spoiler is fallen upon thy summer fruits and upon thy
vintage.
I will
weep for you, O vine of Sibmah, more than I
weep for Jazer. Your tendrils have extended to the
sea; they reach even to Jazer. The destroyer has descended on your summer fruit and
grape harvest.
The earth is moved at the noise of their fall, at the cry the noise thereof was heard in the Red sea.
At the sound of their fall the earth will
quake; their cry will resound to the Red
Sea.
Concerning Damascus.
Hamath is confounded, and Arpad: for they have heard evil
tidings: they are
fainthearted; there is sorrow on the
sea; it cannot be quiet.
Concerning Damascus: “
Hamath and Arpad are put to shame, for they have heard a bad report; they are
agitated like the
sea; their
anxiety cannot be calmed.
In those days, and in that time, saith the LORD, the iniquity of Israel shall be sought for, and there shall be none; and the sins of Judah, and they shall not be found: for I will
pardon them whom I reserve.
In those days and at that time, declares the LORD, a
search will be made for Israel’s guilt, but there will be none, and for Judah’s sins, but they will not be found; for I will
forgive the
remnant I preserve.
They shall hold the bow and the
lance: they are cruel, and will not
shew mercy: their voice shall
roar like the
sea, and they shall
ride upon horses, every one put in
array, like a man to the battle, against thee, O daughter of Babylon.
They
grasp the bow and
spear; they are cruel and
merciless. Their voice roars like the
sea, and they
ride upon horses, lined up like men in formation against you, O Daughter of Babylon.
Therefore thus saith the LORD; Behold, I will
plead thy cause, and take
vengeance for thee; and I will dry up her
sea, and make her springs dry.
Therefore this is what the LORD says: “Behold, I will
plead your case and take
vengeance on your behalf; I will dry up her
sea and make her springs run dry.
The sea is come up upon Babylon: she is covered with the multitude of the waves thereof.
The
sea has come up over Babylon; she is covered in
turbulent waves.
Also the pillars of brass that were in the house of the LORD, and the bases, and the
brasen sea that was in the house of the LORD, the Chaldeans
brake, and carried all the brass of them to Babylon.
Moreover, the Chaldeans broke up the bronze pillars and stands and the bronze Sea in the house of the LORD, and they carried all the bronze to Babylon.
The two pillars, one
sea, and twelve
brasen bulls that were under the bases, which king Solomon had made in the house of the LORD: the brass of all these vessels was without weight.
As for the two pillars, the Sea, the twelve bronze bulls under it, and the movable stands that King Solomon had made for the house of the LORD, the weight of the bronze from all these articles was beyond measure.
All her people
sigh, they seek bread; they have given their pleasant things for meat to
relieve the soul: see, O LORD, and consider; for I am become
vile.
All her people
groan as they
search for bread. They have traded their treasures for food to keep themselves alive. Look, O LORD, and consider, for I have become
despised.
I called for my lovers, but they
deceived me: my priests and mine elders gave up the ghost in the city, while they sought their meat to
relieve their souls.
I called out to my lovers, but they have
betrayed me. My priests and elders perished in the city while they
searched for food to keep themselves alive.
What thing shall I take to witness for thee? what thing shall I
liken to thee, O daughter of Jerusalem? what shall I equal to thee, that I may comfort thee, O virgin daughter of
Zion? for thy breach is great like the
sea: who can
heal thee?
What can I say for you? To what can I compare you, O Daughter of Jerusalem? To what can I
liken you, that I may
console you, O Virgin Daughter of
Zion? For your wound is as deep as the
sea. Who can ever
heal you?
Let us search and try our ways, and turn again to the LORD.
Let us examine and test our ways, and turn back to the LORD.
Even the
sea monsters draw out the breast, they give
suck to their young ones: the daughter of my people is become cruel, like the ostriches in the wilderness.
Even jackals offer their breasts to
nurse their young, but the daughter of my people has become cruel, like an
ostrich in the wilderness.
And he put forth the form of an hand, and took me by a
lock of mine head; and the spirit lifted me up between the earth and the heaven, and brought me in the visions of God to Jerusalem, to the door of the inner gate that looketh toward the north; where was the
seat of the image of jealousy, which provoketh to jealousy.
He stretched out what looked like a hand and took me by the hair of my head. Then the Spirit lifted me up between earth and heaven and carried me in visions of God to Jerusalem, to the entrance of the north gate of the inner court, where the
idol that provokes jealousy was
seated.
In the day that I lifted up mine hand unto them, to bring them forth of the land of Egypt into a land that I had
espied for them, flowing with milk and honey, which is the glory of all lands:
On that day I
swore to bring them out of the land of Egypt into a land that I had
searched out for them, a land flowing with milk and honey, the glory of all lands.
And I sought for a man among them, that should make up the
hedge, and stand in the
gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it: but I found none.
I
searched for a man among them to repair the wall and stand in the
gap before Me on behalf of the land, so that I should not destroy it. But I found no one.
Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will stretch out mine hand upon the Philistines, and I will cut off the Cherethims, and destroy the
remnant of the
sea coast.
therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: Behold, I will stretch out My hand against the Philistines, and I will cut off the Cherethites and destroy the
remnant along the coast.
Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, O Tyrus, and will cause many nations to come up against thee, as the sea causeth his waves to come up.
therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Behold, O Tyre, I am against you, and I will raise up many nations against you, as the sea brings up its waves.
It shall be a place for the spreading of nets in the midst of the
sea: for I have spoken it, saith the Lord GOD: and it shall become a
spoil to the nations.
She will become a place to spread nets in the
sea, for I have spoken, declares the Lord GOD. She will become
plunder for the nations,
Then all the princes of the
sea shall come down from their thrones, and lay away their robes, and put off their
broidered garments: they shall
clothe themselves with
trembling; they shall sit upon the ground, and shall
tremble at every moment, and be
astonished at thee.
All the princes of the
sea will descend from their thrones, remove their robes, and strip off their
embroidered garments. Clothed with terror, they will sit on the ground,
trembling every moment,
appalled over you.
And they shall take up a
lamentation for thee, and say to thee, How art thou destroyed, that
wast inhabited of
seafaring men, the
renowned city, which
wast strong in the
sea, she and her inhabitants, which cause their terror to be on all that
haunt it!
Then they will
lament for you, saying, “How you have perished, O city of
renown inhabited by
seafaring men— she who was powerful on the
sea, along with her people, who imposed terror on all peoples!
Now shall the isles
tremble in the day of thy fall;
yea, the isles that are in the
sea shall be troubled at thy departure.
Now the coastlands
tremble on the day of your
downfall; the islands in the
sea are dismayed by your
demise.”’
And say unto Tyrus, O thou that art
situate at the entry of the
sea, which art a merchant of the people for many isles, Thus saith the Lord GOD; O Tyrus, thou hast said, I am of perfect beauty.
Tell Tyre, who dwells at the
gateway to the
sea, merchant of the peoples on many coasts, that this is what the Lord GOD says: You have said, O Tyre, ‘I am perfect in beauty.’
Thy borders are in the midst of the seas, thy builders have perfected thy beauty.
Your borders are in the heart of the seas; your builders perfected your beauty.
The ancients of Gebal and the wise men thereof were in thee thy calkers: all the ships of the
sea with their mariners were in thee to occupy thy
merchandise.
The ships of
Tarshish did sing of thee in thy market: and thou
wast replenished, and made very glorious in the midst of the
seas.
