What could have been done more to my
vineyard,
that I have not done in it? wherefore, when I looked
that it should bring forth grapes, brought it forth wild grapes?
What more could I have done for My
vineyard than I already did for it? Why, when I expected sweet grapes, did it bring forth
sour fruit?
And I will lay it waste: it shall not be
pruned, nor
digged; but there shall come up briers and thorns: I will also command the clouds
that they rain no rain upon it.
I will make it a wasteland, neither
pruned nor cultivated, and thorns and briers will grow up. I will command the clouds
that rain shall not fall on it.”
Woe unto them
that join house to house,
that lay field to field, till there be no place,
that they may be placed alone in the midst of the earth!
Woe to you who add house to house and join field to field until no place is left and you live alone in the land.
Woe unto them
that rise up early in the morning,
that they may follow strong drink;
that continue until night, till wine inflame them!
Woe to those who rise early in the morning in pursuit of strong drink, who
linger into the evening, to be inflamed by wine.
Therefore
hell hath enlarged herself, and opened her mouth without measure: and their glory, and their multitude, and their
pomp, and he
that rejoiceth, shall descend into it.
Therefore
Sheol enlarges its throat and opens wide its enormous jaws, and down go
Zion’s nobles and masses, her revelers and carousers!
But the LORD of hosts shall be
exalted in judgment, and God
that is holy shall be
sanctified in righteousness.
But the LORD of Hosts will be
exalted by His justice, and the holy God will show Himself holy in righteousness.
Woe unto them
that draw iniquity with cords of vanity, and sin as it were with a
cart rope:
Woe to those who draw iniquity with cords of
deceit and pull sin along with
cart ropes,
That say, Let him make speed, and
hasten his work,
that we may see it: and let the counsel of the Holy One of Israel draw
nigh and come,
that we may know it!
to those who say, “Let Him
hurry and
hasten His work so
that we may see it! Let the plan of the Holy One of Israel come so
that we may know it!”
Woe unto them
that call evil good, and good evil;
that put darkness for light, and light for darkness;
that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!
Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who turn darkness to light and light to darkness, who replace bitter with sweet and sweet with bitter.
Woe unto them
that are wise in their own eyes, and
prudent in their own sight!
Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes and
clever in their own sight.
Woe unto them
that are mighty to drink wine, and men of strength to
mingle strong drink:
Woe to those who are heroes in drinking wine and champions in
mixing strong drink,
Their
roaring shall be like a lion, they shall
roar like young lions:
yea, they shall
roar, and lay hold of the prey, and shall carry it away safe, and none shall deliver it.
Their
roaring is like
that of a lion; they
roar like young lions. They
growl and seize their prey; they carry it away from
deliverance.
And in
that day they shall
roar against them like the
roaring of the sea: and if one look unto the land, behold darkness and sorrow, and the light is
darkened in the heavens thereof.
In
that day they will
roar over it, like the
roaring of the sea. If one looks over the land, he will see darkness and distress; even the light will be obscured by clouds.
In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple.
In the year
that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord seated on a throne, high and
exalted; and the train of His
robe filled the temple.
And the posts of the door moved at the voice of him
that cried, and the house was filled with smoke.
At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds
shook, and the temple was filled with smoke.
Then
flew one of the seraphims unto me, having a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with the
tongs from off the altar:
And he laid it upon my mouth, and said, Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin
purged.
And with it he touched my mouth and said: “Now
that this has touched your lips, your iniquity is removed and your sin is
atoned for.”
And it came to pass in the days of
Ahaz the son of Jotham, the son of Uzziah, king of Judah,
that Rezin the king of Syria, and Pekah the son of Remaliah, king of Israel, went up toward Jerusalem to war against it, but could not prevail against it.
Now in the days
that Ahaz son of Jotham, the son of Uzziah, was king of Judah, Rezin king of
Aram marched up to
wage war against Jerusalem. He was accompanied by Pekah son of Remaliah the king of Israel, but he could not overpower the city.
And it was told the house of David, saying, Syria is
confederate with Ephraim. And his heart was moved, and the heart of his people, as the trees of the wood are moved with the wind.
When it was reported to the house of David
that Aram was in league with Ephraim, the hearts of
Ahaz and his people
trembled like trees in the forest
shaken by the wind.
Then said the LORD unto Isaiah, Go forth now to meet
Ahaz, thou, and
Shear-jashub thy son, at the end of the
conduit of the upper
pool in the
highway of the fuller’s field;
Then the LORD said to Isaiah, “Go out with your son
Shear-jashub to meet
Ahaz at the end of the
aqueduct that feeds the upper
pool, on the road to the
Launderer’s Field,
For the head of Syria is Damascus, and the head of Damascus is Rezin; and within
threescore and five years shall Ephraim be broken,
that it be not a people.
For the head of
Aram is Damascus, and the head of Damascus is Rezin. Within sixty-five years Ephraim will be
shattered as a people.
Butter and honey shall he eat, that he may know to refuse the evil, and choose the good.
By the time He knows enough to
reject evil and choose good, He will be eating curds and honey.
For before the child shall know to refuse the evil, and choose the good, the land
that thou abhorrest shall be
forsaken of both her kings.
For before the boy knows enough to
reject evil and choose good, the land of the two kings you
dread will be laid waste.
The LORD shall bring upon thee, and upon thy people, and upon thy father’s house, days that have not come, from the day that Ephraim departed from Judah; even the king of Assyria.
The LORD will bring on you and on your people and on the house of your father a time unlike any since the day Ephraim separated from Judah—He will bring the king of Assyria.”
And it shall come to pass in
that day,
that the LORD shall hiss for the fly
that is in the
uttermost part of the rivers of Egypt, and for the
bee that is in the land of Assyria.
On
that day the LORD will
whistle to the
flies at the
farthest streams of the Nile and to the bees in the land of Assyria.
In the same day shall the Lord
shave with a
razor that is
hired, namely, by them beyond the river, by the king of Assyria, the head, and the hair of the feet: and it shall also
consume the
beard.
On
that day the Lord will use a
razor hired from beyond the Euphrates—the king of Assyria—to
shave your head and the hair of your legs, and to remove your
beard as well.
And it shall come to pass in
that day,
that a man shall
nourish a young cow, and two sheep;
On that day a man will raise a young cow and two sheep,
And it shall come to pass, for the abundance of milk that they shall give he shall eat butter: for butter and honey shall every one eat that is left in the land.
and from the abundance of milk they give, he will eat curds; for all who remain in the land will eat curds and honey.
And it shall come to pass in that day, that every place shall be, where there were a thousand vines at a thousand silverlings, it shall even be for briers and thorns.
And on that day, in every place that had a thousand vines worth a thousand shekels of silver, only briers and thorns will be found.
And on all hills
that shall be
digged with the
mattock, there shall not come thither the fear of briers and thorns: but it shall be for the sending forth of oxen, and for the
treading of lesser cattle.
For fear of the briers and thorns, you will no longer
traverse the hills once tilled by the
hoe; they will become places for oxen to
graze and sheep to
trample.
Forasmuch as this people refuseth the waters of Shiloah
that go softly, and
rejoice in Rezin and Remaliah’s son;
“Because this people has rejected the gently flowing waters of Shiloah and
rejoiced in Rezin and the son of Remaliah,
For the LORD spake thus to me with a strong hand, and
instructed me
that I should not walk in the way of this people, saying,
For this is what the LORD has spoken to me with a strong hand,
instructing me not to walk in the way of this people:
And I will wait upon the LORD, that hideth his face from the house of Jacob, and I will look for him.
I will wait for the LORD, who is hiding His face from the house of Jacob. I will put my trust in Him.
And when they shall say unto you, Seek unto them
that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards
that peep, and
that mutter: should not a people seek unto their God? for the living to the dead?
When men tell you to
consult the spirits of the dead and the spiritists who
whisper and
mutter, shouldn’t a people
consult their God instead? Why
consult the dead on behalf of the living?
And they shall pass through it, hardly
bestead and
hungry: and it shall come to pass,
that when they shall be
hungry, they shall
fret themselves, and
curse their king and their God, and look upward.
The people
that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they
that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light
shined.
The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death, a light has
dawned.
Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.
Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish and
sustain it with justice and righteousness from
that time and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of Hosts will
accomplish this.
And all the people shall know, even Ephraim and the inhabitant of Samaria,
that say in the pride and
stoutness of heart,
All the people will know it— Ephraim and the dwellers of Samaria. With pride and
arrogance of heart they will say:
For the people turneth not unto him that smiteth them, neither do they seek the LORD of hosts.
But the people did not return to Him who struck them; they did not seek the LORD of Hosts.
The ancient and honourable, he is the head; and the prophet that teacheth lies, he is the tail.
The head is the elder and honorable man, and the tail is the prophet who teaches lies.
For the leaders of this people cause them to
err; and they
that are led of them are destroyed.
For those who guide this people mislead them, and those they mislead are
swallowed up.
For wickedness burneth as the fire: it shall
devour the briers and thorns, and shall
kindle in the thickets of the forest, and they shall mount up like the lifting up of smoke.
For wickedness burns like a fire that consumes the thorns and briers and kindles the forest thickets which roll upward in billows of smoke.
Woe unto them
that decree unrighteous decrees, and
that write
grievousness which they have prescribed;
To turn aside the
needy from judgment, and to take away the right from the poor of my people,
that widows may be their prey, and
that they may
rob the fatherless!
to deprive the poor of fair treatment and
withhold justice from the
oppressed of My people, to make widows their prey and orphans their
plunder.
Wherefore it shall come to pass,
that when the Lord hath performed his whole work upon mount
Zion and on Jerusalem, I will
punish the fruit of the
stout heart of the king of Assyria, and the glory of his high looks.
So when the Lord has completed all His work against Mount
Zion and Jerusalem, He will say, “I will
punish the king of Assyria for the fruit of his
arrogant heart and the proud look in his eyes.
And my hand hath found as a nest the riches of the people: and as one gathereth eggs
that are left, have I gathered all the earth; and there was none
that moved the wing, or opened the mouth, or
peeped.
My hand reached as into a nest to seize the wealth of the nations. Like one gathering abandoned eggs, I gathered all the earth. No wing
fluttered, no
beak opened or
chirped.’”
Shall the
axe boast itself against him
that heweth
therewith? or shall the saw
magnify itself against him
that shaketh it? as if the rod should
shake itself against them
that lift it up, or as if the staff should lift up itself, as if it were no wood.
Does an
axe raise itself above the one who swings it? Does a saw
boast over him who saws with it? It would be like a rod waving the one who lifts it, or a staff lifting him who is not wood!
And the rest of the trees of his forest shall be few, that a child may write them.
The remaining trees of its forests will be so few that a child could count them.
And it shall come to pass in
that day,
that the
remnant of Israel, and such as are escaped of the house of Jacob, shall no more again stay upon him
that smote them; but shall stay upon the LORD, the Holy One of Israel, in truth.
On
that day the
remnant of Israel and the survivors of the house of Jacob will no longer depend on him who struck them, but they will truly
rely on the LORD, the Holy One of Israel.
Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD of hosts, O my people
that dwellest in
Zion, be not afraid of the Assyrian: he shall
smite thee with a rod, and shall lift up his staff against thee, after the manner of Egypt.
Therefore this is what the Lord GOD of Hosts says: “O My people who dwell in
Zion, do not fear Assyria, who strikes you with a rod and lifts his staff against you as the Egyptians did.
And it shall come to pass in
that day,
that his burden shall be taken away from off thy shoulder, and his yoke from off thy neck, and the yoke shall be destroyed because of the
anointing.
On that day the burden will be lifted from your shoulders, and the yoke from your neck. The yoke will be broken because your neck will be too large.
As yet shall he remain at
Nob that day: he shall
shake his hand against the mount of the daughter of
Zion, the hill of Jerusalem.
And in
that day there shall be a root of
Jesse, which shall stand for an
ensign of the people; to it shall the Gentiles seek: and his rest shall be glorious.
On
that day the Root of
Jesse will stand as a
banner for the peoples. The nations will seek Him, and His place of rest will be glorious.
And it shall come to pass in
that day,
that the Lord shall set his hand again the second time to recover the
remnant of his people, which shall be left, from Assyria, and from Egypt, and from Pathros, and from
Cush, and from
Elam, and from
Shinar, and from
Hamath, and from the islands of the sea.
On
that day the Lord will extend His hand a second time to recover the
remnant of His people from Assyria, from Egypt, from Pathros, from
Cush, from
Elam, from
Shinar, from
Hamath, and from the islands of the sea.
And there shall be an
highway for the
remnant of his people, which shall be left, from Assyria; like as it was to Israel in the day
that he came up out of the land of Egypt.
There will be a
highway for the
remnant of His people who remain from Assyria, as there was for Israel when they came up from the land of Egypt.
And in
that day thou shalt say, O LORD, I will praise thee: though thou
wast angry with me, thine anger is turned away, and thou comfortedst me.
In
that day you will say: “O LORD, I will praise You. Although You were
angry with me, Your anger has turned away, and You have comforted me.
And in
that day shall ye say, Praise the LORD, call upon his name, declare his doings among the people, make mention
that his name is
exalted.
and on
that day you will say: “Give praise to the LORD;
proclaim His name! Make His works known among the peoples; declare
that His name is
exalted.
The burden of Babylon, which Isaiah the son of Amoz did see.
This is the burden against Babylon that Isaiah son of Amoz received:
Lift ye up a
banner upon the high mountain,
exalt the voice unto them,
shake the hand,
that they may go into the gates of the nobles.
Raise a
banner on a barren
hilltop; call
aloud to them. Wave your hand,
that they may enter the gates of the nobles.
I have commanded my
sanctified ones, I have also called my mighty ones for mine anger, even them
that rejoice in my highness.
I have commanded My
sanctified ones; I have even summoned My warriors to
execute My wrath and
exult in My triumph.
The noise of a multitude in the mountains, like as of a great people; a
tumultuous noise of the kingdoms of nations gathered together: the LORD of hosts mustereth the host of the battle.
Listen, a
tumult on the mountains, like
that of a great multitude!
Listen, an
uproar among the kingdoms, like nations gathered together! The LORD of Hosts is
mobilizing an army for war.
And they shall be afraid: pangs and sorrows shall take hold of them; they shall be in pain as a woman
that travaileth: they shall be
amazed one at another; their faces shall be as flames.
Terror, pain, and
anguish will seize them; they will
writhe like a woman in labor. They will look at one another, their faces
flushed with fear.
And it shall be as the
chased roe, and as a sheep
that no man taketh up: they shall every man turn to his own people, and
flee every one into his own land.
Like a
hunted gazelle, like a sheep without a
shepherd, each will return to his own people, each will
flee to his native land.
Every one that is found shall be thrust through; and every one that is joined unto them shall fall by the sword.
And it shall come to pass in the day
that the LORD shall give thee rest from thy sorrow, and from thy fear, and from the hard
bondage wherein thou
wast made to serve,
On the day
that the LORD gives you rest from your pain and
torment, and from the hard labor into which you were forced,
That thou shalt take up this
proverb against the king of Babylon, and say, How hath the
oppressor ceased! the golden city ceased!
you will sing this song of contempt against the king of Babylon: How the
oppressor has ceased, and how his
fury has ended!
He who
smote the people in wrath with a continual stroke, he
that ruled the nations in anger, is
persecuted, and none hindereth.
It struck the peoples in anger with unceasing blows; it subdued the nations in
rage with relentless persecution.
They
that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, and consider thee, saying, Is this the man
that made the earth to
tremble,
that did
shake kingdoms;
Those who see you will
stare; they will
ponder your fate: “Is this the man who
shook the earth and made the kingdoms
tremble,
That made the world as a wilderness, and destroyed the cities thereof; that opened not the house of his prisoners?
who turned the world into a desert and destroyed its cities, who refused to let the
captives return to their homes?”
But thou art cast out of thy grave like an
abominable branch, and as the
raiment of those
that are slain, thrust through with a sword,
that go down to the stones of the pit; as a
carcase trodden under feet.
But you are cast out of your grave like a rejected branch, covered by those slain with the sword, and
dumped into a rocky pit like a
carcass trampled underfoot.
Prepare slaughter for his children for the iniquity of their fathers; that they do not rise, nor possess the land, nor fill the face of the world with cities.
Prepare a place to slaughter his sons for the
iniquities of their forefathers. They will never rise up to possess a land or cover the earth with their cities.
That I will break the Assyrian in my land, and upon my mountains
tread him under foot: then shall his yoke depart from off them, and his burden depart from off their shoulders.
I will break Assyria in My land; I will
trample him on My mountain. His yoke will be taken off My people, and his burden removed from their shoulders.”
This is the purpose that is purposed upon the whole earth: and this is the hand that is stretched out upon all the nations.
This is the plan devised for the whole earth, and this is the hand stretched out over all the nations.
In the year
that king
Ahaz died was this burden.
In the year
that King
Ahaz died, this burden was received:
Rejoice not thou, whole Palestina, because the rod of him
that smote thee is broken: for out of the serpent’s root shall come forth a
cockatrice, and his fruit shall be a
fiery flying serpent.
Do not
rejoice, all you Philistines,
that the rod
that struck you is broken. For a
viper will spring from the root of the
snake, and a flying serpent from its egg.
What shall one then answer the messengers of the nation?
That the LORD hath founded
Zion, and the poor of his people shall trust in it.
What answer will be given to the envoys of
that nation? “The LORD has founded
Zion, where His
afflicted people will find refuge.”
Therefore the abundance they have
gotten, and
that which they have laid up, shall they carry away to the
brook of the willows.
So they carry their wealth and belongings over the
Brook of the Willows.
For the waters of Dimon shall be full of blood: for I will bring more upon Dimon, lions upon him
that escapeth of Moab, and upon the
remnant of the land.
The waters of Dimon are full of blood, but I will bring more upon Dimon— a lion upon the fugitives of Moab and upon the
remnant of the land.
For it shall be,
that, as a wandering bird cast out of the nest, so the daughters of Moab shall be at the fords of
Arnon.
Like
fluttering birds pushed out of the nest, so are the daughters of Moab at the fords of the
Arnon:
Take counsel,
execute judgment; make thy shadow as the night in the midst of the
noonday; hide the outcasts;
bewray not him
that wandereth.
“Give us counsel; render a decision. Shelter us at
noonday with shade as dark as night. Hide the refugees; do not
betray the one who flees.
And it shall come to pass, when it is seen
that Moab is
weary on the high place,
that he shall come to his sanctuary to pray; but he shall not prevail.
When Moab appears on the high place, when he wearies himself and enters his sanctuary to pray, it will do him no good.
This is the word that the LORD hath spoken concerning Moab since that time.
This is the message that the LORD spoke earlier concerning Moab.
But now the LORD hath spoken, saying, Within three years, as the years of an
hireling, and the glory of Moab shall be
contemned, with all
that great multitude; and the
remnant shall be very small and feeble.
And now the LORD says, “In three years, as a
hired worker counts the years, Moab’s
splendor will become an object of contempt, with all her many people. And those who are left will be few and feeble.”
And in
that day it shall come to pass,
that the glory of Jacob shall be made thin, and the fatness of his flesh shall wax
lean.
“In
that day the
splendor of Jacob will
fade, and the fat of his body will waste away,
And it shall be as when the
harvestman gathereth the corn, and reapeth the ears with his arm; and it shall be as he
that gathereth ears in the valley of
Rephaim.
as the
reaper gathers the standing grain and harvests the ears with his arm, as one gleans heads of grain in the Valley of
Rephaim.
Yet
gleaning grapes shall be left in it, as the
shaking of an olive tree, two or three
berries in the top of the
uppermost bough, four or five in the outmost fruitful branches thereof, saith the LORD God of Israel.
Yet gleanings will remain, like an olive tree
that has been beaten— two or three
berries atop the tree, four or five on its fruitful branches,” declares the LORD, the God of Israel.
At that day shall a man look to his Maker, and his eyes shall have respect to the Holy One of Israel.
In that day men will look to their Maker and turn their eyes to the Holy One of Israel.
And he shall not look to the altars, the work of his hands, neither shall respect that which his fingers have made, either the groves, or the images.
They will not look to the altars they have fashioned with their hands or to the Asherahs and incense altars they have made with their fingers.
In
that day shall his strong cities be as a
forsaken bough, and an
uppermost branch, which they left because of the children of Israel: and there shall be
desolation.
In
that day their strong cities will be like
forsaken thickets and summits, abandoned to the Israelites and to utter
desolation.
In the day shalt thou make thy plant to grow, and in the morning shalt thou make thy seed to
flourish: but the harvest shall be a
heap in the day of grief and of
desperate sorrow.
though on the day you plant you make them grow, and on
that morning you help your seed
sprout— yet the harvest will
vanish on the day of disease and incurable pain.
Woe to the multitude of many people, which make a noise like the noise of the seas; and to the
rushing of nations,
that make a
rushing like the
rushing of mighty waters!
And behold at eveningtide trouble; and before the morning he is not. This is the portion of them
that spoil us, and the lot of them
that rob us.
In the evening, there is sudden terror! Before morning, they are no more! This is the portion of those who
loot us and the lot of those who
plunder us.
That sendeth ambassadors by the sea, even in vessels of bulrushes upon the waters, saying, Go, ye swift messengers, to a nation scattered and
peeled, to a people terrible from their beginning hitherto; a nation meted out and
trodden down, whose land the rivers have
spoiled!
which sends couriers by sea, in
papyrus vessels on the waters. Go, swift messengers, to a people tall and smooth-
skinned, to a people widely feared, to a powerful nation of strange speech, whose land is divided by rivers.
In
that time shall the present be brought unto the LORD of hosts of a people scattered and
peeled, and from a people terrible from their beginning hitherto; a nation meted out and
trodden under foot, whose land the rivers have
spoiled, to the place of the name of the LORD of hosts, the mount
Zion.
At
that time gifts will be brought to the LORD of Hosts— from a people tall and smooth-
skinned, from a people widely feared, from a powerful nation of strange speech, whose land is divided by rivers— to Mount
Zion, the place of the Name of the LORD of Hosts.
And the spirit of Egypt shall fail in the midst thereof; and I will destroy the counsel thereof: and they shall seek to the idols, and to the charmers, and to them that have familiar spirits, and to the wizards.
Then the spirit of the Egyptians will be
emptied out from among them, and I will
frustrate their plans, so
that they will resort to idols and spirits of the dead, to mediums and spiritists.
The fishers also shall
mourn, and all they
that cast angle into the
brooks shall
lament, and they
that spread nets upon the waters shall
languish.
Then the
fishermen will
mourn, all who cast a hook into the Nile will
lament, and those who spread nets on the waters will pine away.
Moreover they
that work in fine flax, and they
that weave networks, shall be confounded.
The workers in flax will be dismayed, and the weavers of fine linen will turn pale.
And they shall be broken in the purposes thereof, all that make sluices and ponds for fish.
The workers in cloth will be
dejected, and all the
hired workers will be sick at heart.
The princes of Zoan are become fools, the princes of
Noph are
deceived; they have also
seduced Egypt, even they
that are the stay of the tribes thereof.
The princes of Zoan have become fools; the princes of
Memphis are
deceived. The cornerstones of her tribes have led Egypt
astray.
In
that day shall Egypt be like unto women: and it shall be afraid and fear because of the
shaking of the hand of the LORD of hosts, which he shaketh over it.
In
that day the Egyptians will be like women. They will
tremble with fear beneath the
uplifted hand of the LORD of Hosts, when He brandishes it against them.
