They shall
tremble as a bird out of Egypt, and as a
dove out of the land of Assyria: and I
will place them in their houses, saith the LORD.
They
will come
trembling like birds from Egypt and like doves from the land of Assyria. Then I
will settle them in their homes, declares the LORD.
The LORD hath also a controversy with Judah, and
will punish Jacob according to his ways; according to his doings
will he
recompense him.
The LORD also brings a charge against Judah. He
will punish Jacob according to his ways and repay him according to his deeds.
And I that am the LORD thy God from the land of Egypt will yet make thee to dwell in tabernacles, as in the days of the solemn feast.
But I am the LORD your God ever since the land of Egypt. I will again make you dwell in tents, as in the days of the appointed feast.
Is there iniquity in
Gilead? surely they are vanity: they sacrifice bullocks in
Gilgal;
yea, their altars are as heaps in the furrows of the fields.
Is there iniquity in
Gilead? They
will surely come to nothing. Do they sacrifice bulls in
Gilgal? Indeed, their altars
will be heaps of stones in the furrows of the field.
Ephraim
provoked him to anger most bitterly: therefore shall he leave his blood upon him, and his reproach shall his Lord return unto him.
Ephraim has
provoked bitter anger, so his Lord
will leave his bloodguilt upon him and repay him for his contempt.
Therefore they shall be as the morning cloud, and as the early
dew that passeth away, as the
chaff that is driven with the
whirlwind out of the floor, and as the smoke out of the
chimney.
Therefore they
will be like the morning
mist, like the early
dew that vanishes, like
chaff blown from a
threshing floor, like smoke through an open window.
Therefore I
will be unto them as a lion: as a
leopard by the way
will I observe them:
I
will meet them as a bear that is
bereaved of her whelps, and
will rend the
caul of their heart, and there
will I
devour them like a lion: the wild beast shall
tear them.
Like a bear
robbed of her cubs I
will attack them, and I
will tear open their chests. There I
will devour them like a lion, like a wild beast would
tear them apart.
I will be thy king: where is any other that may save thee in all thy cities? and thy judges of whom thou saidst, Give me a king and princes?
Where is your king now to save you in all your cities, and the rulers to whom you said, “Give me a king and princes”?
I
will ransom them from the power of the grave; I
will redeem them from death: O death, I
will be thy plagues; O grave, I
will be thy destruction:
repentance shall be
hid from mine eyes.
Though he be fruitful among his brethren, an east wind shall come, the wind of the LORD shall come up from the wilderness, and his spring shall become dry, and his fountain shall be dried up: he shall
spoil the
treasure of all pleasant vessels.
Although he
flourishes among his brothers, an east wind
will come— a wind from the LORD rising up from the desert. His fountain
will fail, and his spring
will run dry. The wind
will plunder his treasury of every precious article.
Samaria shall become
desolate; for she hath rebelled against her God: they shall fall by the sword: their infants shall be
dashed in pieces, and their women with child shall be
ripped up.
Samaria
will bear her guilt because she has rebelled against her God. They
will fall by the sword; their little ones
will be
dashed to pieces, and their
pregnant women
ripped open.
Take with you words, and turn to the LORD: say unto him, Take away all iniquity, and receive us
graciously: so
will we render the
calves of our lips.
Bring your confessions and return to the LORD. Say to Him: “Take away all our iniquity and receive us
graciously, that we may present the fruit of our lips.
Asshur shall not save us; we
will not
ride upon horses: neither
will we say any more to the work of our hands, Ye are our gods: for in thee the fatherless findeth mercy.
Assyria
will not save us, nor
will we
ride on horses. We
will never again say, ‘Our gods!’ to the work of our own hands. For in You the fatherless find
compassion.”
I
will heal their
backsliding, I
will love them freely: for mine anger is turned away from him.
I
will heal their
apostasy; I
will freely love them, for My anger has turned away from them.
I
will be as the
dew unto Israel: he shall grow as the
lily, and cast forth his roots as
Lebanon.
I
will be like the
dew to Israel; he
will blossom like the
lily and take root like the cedars of
Lebanon.
His branches shall spread, and his beauty shall be as the olive tree, and his smell as
Lebanon.
They that dwell under his shadow shall return; they shall revive as the corn, and grow as the vine: the
scent thereof shall be as the wine of
Lebanon.
They
will return and dwell in his shade; they
will grow grain and
blossom like the vine. His
renown will be like the wine of
Lebanon.
Alas for the day! for the day of the LORD is at hand, and as a destruction from the
Almighty shall it come.
Alas for the day! For the Day of the LORD is near, and it
will come as destruction from the
Almighty.
O LORD, to thee
will I cry: for the fire hath
devoured the pastures of the wilderness, and the flame hath burned all the trees of the field.
To You, O LORD, I call, for fire has consumed the open pastures and flames have
scorched all the trees of the field.
A day of darkness and of
gloominess, a day of clouds and of thick darkness, as the morning spread upon the mountains: a great people and a strong; there hath not been ever the like, neither shall be any more after it, even to the years of many generations.
a day of darkness and
gloom, a day of clouds and blackness. Like the
dawn overspreading the mountains a great and strong army appears, such as never was of old, nor
will ever be in ages to come.
A fire devoureth before them; and behind them a flame burneth: the land is as the garden of
Eden before them, and behind them a
desolate wilderness;
yea, and nothing shall escape them.
Before them a fire devours, and behind them a flame scorches. The land before them is like the Garden of
Eden, but behind them, it is like a desert wasteland— surely nothing
will escape them.
Who knoweth if he
will return and
repent, and leave a blessing behind him; even a meat offering and a drink offering unto the LORD your God?
Who knows? He may turn and relent and leave a blessing behind Him— grain and drink offerings for the LORD your God.
Then
will the LORD be
jealous for his land, and
pity his people.
Then the LORD became
jealous for His land, and He
spared His people.
Yea, the LORD
will answer and say unto his people, Behold, I
will send you corn, and wine, and oil, and ye shall be satisfied
therewith: and I
will no more make you a reproach among the heathen:
And the LORD answered His people: “Behold, I will send you grain, new wine, and oil, and by them you will be satisfied. I will never again make you a reproach among the nations.
But I
will remove far off from you the northern army, and
will drive him into a land barren and
desolate, with his face toward the east sea, and his hinder part toward the utmost sea, and his
stink shall come up, and his ill savour shall come up, because he hath done great things.
The northern army I
will drive away from you,
banishing it to a barren and
desolate land, its front ranks into the Eastern Sea, and its rear guard into the Western Sea. And its
stench will rise; its foul
odor will ascend. For He has done great things.
Fear not, O land; be
glad and
rejoice: for the LORD
will do great things.
Do not be afraid, O land;
rejoice and be
glad, for the LORD has done great things.
Be
glad then, ye children of
Zion, and
rejoice in the LORD your God: for he hath given you the former rain moderately, and he
will cause to come down for you the rain, the former rain, and the latter rain in the first month.
Be
glad, O children of
Zion, and
rejoice in the LORD your God, for He has given you the autumn rains for your
vindication. He sends you showers, both autumn and spring rains, as before.
And the floors shall be full of wheat, and the vats shall overflow with wine and oil.
The
threshing floors
will be full of grain, and the vats
will overflow with new wine and oil.
And I
will restore to you the years that the
locust hath eaten, the
cankerworm, and the caterpiller, and the
palmerworm, my great army which I sent among you.
And ye shall eat in
plenty, and be satisfied, and praise the name of the LORD your God, that hath dealt
wondrously with you: and my people shall never be
ashamed.
You
will have
plenty to eat, until you are satisfied. You
will praise the name of the LORD your God, who has worked wonders for you. My people
will never again be put to shame.
And ye shall know that I am in the midst of Israel, and that I am the LORD your God, and none else: and my people shall never be
ashamed.
Then you will know that I am present in Israel and that I am the LORD your God, and there is no other. My people will never again be put to shame.
And it shall come to pass afterward, that I
will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall
prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:
And afterward, I
will pour out My Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters
will prophesy, your old men
will dream dreams, your young men
will see visions.
And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit.
Even on My menservants and maidservants, I will pour out My Spirit in those days.
And I
will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke.
I will show wonders in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and columns of smoke.
The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the LORD come.
The sun
will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and
awesome Day of the LORD.
And it shall come to pass, that
whosoever shall call on the name of the LORD shall be delivered: for in mount
Zion and in Jerusalem shall be
deliverance, as the LORD hath said, and in the
remnant whom the LORD shall call.
And
everyone who calls on the name of the LORD
will be saved; for on Mount
Zion and in Jerusalem there
will be
deliverance, as the LORD has promised, among the
remnant called by the LORD.
I
will also gather all nations, and
will bring them down into the valley of
Jehoshaphat, and
will plead with them there for my people and for my
heritage Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations, and parted my land.
I
will gather all the nations and bring them down to the Valley of
Jehoshaphat. There I
will enter into judgment against them concerning My people, My inheritance, Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations as they divided up My land.
Yea, and what have ye to do with me, O Tyre, and Zidon, and all the coasts of Palestine?
will ye render me a recompence? and if ye
recompense me, swiftly and speedily
will I return your recompence upon your own head;
Now what do you have against Me, O Tyre,
Sidon, and all the regions of Philistia? Are you rendering against Me a
recompense? If you
retaliate against Me, I
will swiftly and speedily return your
recompense upon your heads.
Behold, I
will raise them out of the place
whither ye have sold them, and
will return your recompence upon your own head:
Behold, I
will rouse them from the places to which you sold them; I
will return your
recompense upon your heads.
And I
will sell your sons and your daughters into the hand of the children of Judah, and they shall sell them to the
Sabeans, to a people far off: for the LORD hath spoken it.
I
will sell your sons and daughters into the hands of the people of Judah, and they
will sell them to the
Sabeans—to a distant nation.” Indeed, the LORD has spoken.
Let the heathen be
wakened, and come up to the valley of
Jehoshaphat: for there
will I sit to judge all the heathen round about.
Let the nations be
roused and advance to the Valley of
Jehoshaphat, for there I
will sit down to judge all the nations on every side.
The sun and the moon shall be
darkened, and the stars shall withdraw their
shining.
The sun and moon
will grow dark, and the stars
will no longer
shine.
The LORD also shall
roar out of
Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the heavens and the earth shall
shake: but the LORD
will be the hope of his people, and the strength of the children of Israel.
The LORD
will roar from
Zion and raise His voice from Jerusalem; heaven and earth
will tremble. But the LORD
will be a refuge for His people, a
stronghold for the people of Israel.
So shall ye know that I am the LORD your God dwelling in
Zion, my holy mountain: then shall Jerusalem be holy, and there shall no strangers pass through her any more.
Then you
will know that I am the LORD your God, who dwells in
Zion, My holy mountain. Jerusalem
will be holy, never again to be overrun by foreigners.
And it shall come to pass in that day, that the mountains shall drop down new wine, and the hills shall flow with milk, and all the rivers of Judah shall flow with waters, and a fountain shall come forth of the house of the LORD, and shall water the valley of
Shittim.
And in that day the mountains
will drip with sweet wine, and the hills
will flow with milk. All the streams of Judah
will run with water, and a spring
will flow from the house of the LORD to water the Valley of
Acacias.
Egypt shall be a
desolation, and
Edom shall be a
desolate wilderness, for the violence against the children of Judah, because they have shed innocent blood in their land.
Egypt
will become
desolate, and
Edom a desert wasteland, because of the violence done to the people of Judah, in whose land they shed innocent blood.
But Judah shall dwell for ever, and Jerusalem from generation to generation.
But Judah
will be inhabited
forever, and Jerusalem from generation to generation.
For I
will avenge their blood, which I have not yet
avenged.” For the LORD dwells in
Zion.
And he said, The LORD
will roar from
Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the habitations of the
shepherds shall
mourn, and the top of
Carmel shall wither.
Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of Damascus, and for four, I
will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they have
threshed Gilead with
threshing instruments of iron:
This is what the LORD says: “For three transgressions of Damascus, even four, I
will not
revoke My judgment, because they
threshed Gilead with sledges of iron.
But I
will send a fire into the house of
Hazael, which shall
devour the palaces of Ben-
hadad.
I
will break also the bar of Damascus, and cut off the inhabitant from the plain of
Aven, and him that holdeth the
sceptre from the house of
Eden: and the people of Syria shall go into captivity unto Kir, saith the LORD.
I
will break down the gates of Damascus; I
will cut off the ruler of the Valley of
Aven and the one who wields the
scepter in Beth-
eden. The people of
Aram will be exiled to Kir,” says the LORD.
Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of
Gaza, and for four, I
will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they carried away
captive the whole captivity, to deliver them up to
Edom:
This is what the LORD says: “For three transgressions of
Gaza, even four, I
will not
revoke My judgment, because they exiled a whole population, delivering them up to
Edom.
But I
will send a fire on the wall of
Gaza, which shall
devour the palaces thereof:
So I
will send fire upon the walls of
Gaza, to
consume its citadels.
And I
will cut off the inhabitant from
Ashdod, and him that holdeth the
sceptre from Ashkelon, and I
will turn mine hand against
Ekron: and the
remnant of the Philistines shall perish, saith the Lord GOD.
I
will cut off the ruler of
Ashdod and the one who wields the
scepter in Ashkelon. I
will turn My hand against
Ekron, and the
remnant of the Philistines
will perish,” says the Lord GOD.
Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of Tyrus, and for four, I
will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they delivered up the whole captivity to
Edom, and remembered not the brotherly covenant:
This is what the LORD says: “For three transgressions of Tyre, even four, I
will not
revoke My judgment, because they delivered up a whole congregation of exiles to
Edom and broke a covenant of
brotherhood.
But I
will send a fire on the wall of Tyrus, which shall
devour the palaces thereof.
So I
will send fire upon the walls of Tyre to
consume its citadels.”
Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of
Edom, and for four, I
will not turn away the punishment thereof; because he did pursue his brother with the sword, and did cast off all
pity, and his anger did
tear perpetually, and he kept his wrath for ever:
This is what the LORD says: “For three transgressions of
Edom, even four, I
will not
revoke My judgment, because he pursued his brother with the sword and
stifled all
compassion; his anger
raged continually, and his
fury flamed
incessantly.
But I
will send a fire upon Teman, which shall
devour the palaces of
Bozrah.
So I
will send fire upon Teman to
consume the citadels of
Bozrah.”
Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of the children of
Ammon, and for four, I
will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they have
ripped up the women with child of
Gilead, that they might
enlarge their border:
So I
will kindle a fire in the walls of Rabbah to
consume its citadels amid war
cries on the day of battle and a violent wind on the day of
tempest.
And their king shall go into captivity, he and his princes together, saith the LORD.
Their king will go into exile— he and his princes together,” says the LORD.
Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of Moab, and for four, I
will not turn away the punishment thereof; because he burned the bones of the king of
Edom into lime:
This is what the LORD says: “For three transgressions of Moab, even four, I
will not
revoke My judgment, because he burned to lime the bones of
Edom’s king.
But I
will send a fire upon Moab, and it shall
devour the palaces of Kirioth: and Moab shall die with
tumult, with
shouting, and with the sound of the
trumpet:
So I
will send fire against Moab to
consume the citadels of Kerioth. Moab
will die in
tumult, amid war
cries and the sound of the ram’s horn.
And I
will cut off the judge from the midst thereof, and
will slay all the princes thereof with him, saith the LORD.
I will cut off the ruler of Moab and kill all the officials with him,” says the LORD.
Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of Judah, and for four, I
will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they have
despised the law of the LORD, and have not kept his commandments, and their lies caused them to
err, after the which their fathers have walked:
This is what the LORD says: “For three transgressions of Judah, even four, I
will not
revoke My judgment, because they
reject the Law of the LORD and fail to keep His statutes; they are led
astray by the lies in which their fathers walked.
But I
will send a fire upon Judah, and it shall
devour the palaces of Jerusalem.
So I
will send fire upon Judah to
consume the citadels of Jerusalem.”
Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of Israel, and for four, I
will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they sold the righteous for silver, and the poor for a pair of
shoes;
This is what the LORD says: “For three transgressions of Israel, even four, I
will not
revoke My judgment, because they sell the righteous for silver and the
needy for a pair of
sandals.
That
pant after the dust of the earth on the head of the poor, and turn aside the way of the
meek: and a man and his father
will go in unto the same
maid, to
profane my holy name:
They
trample on the heads of the poor as on the dust of the earth; they
push the
needy out of their way. A man and his father have relations with the same
girl and so
profane My holy name.
Therefore the flight shall perish from the swift, and the strong shall not
strengthen his force, neither shall the mighty deliver himself:
Escape will fail the swift, the strong will not prevail by his strength, and the mighty will not save his life.
Neither shall he stand that handleth the bow; and he that is swift of foot shall not deliver himself: neither shall he that rideth the horse deliver himself.
The archer
will not stand his ground, the fleet of foot
will not escape, and the
horseman will not save his life.
And he that is
courageous among the mighty shall
flee away naked in that day, saith the LORD.
Even the bravest of mighty men
will flee naked on that day,” declares the LORD.
You only have I known of all the families of the earth: therefore I
will punish you for all your
iniquities.
“Only you have I known from all the families of the earth; therefore I
will punish you for all your
iniquities.”
Will a lion
roar in the forest, when he hath no prey?
will a young lion cry out of his den, if he have taken nothing?
Does a lion
roar in the forest when he has no prey? Does a young lion
growl in his den if he has caught nothing?
Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets.
Surely the Lord GOD does nothing without
revealing His plan to His servants the prophets.
The lion hath
roared, who
will not fear? the Lord GOD hath spoken, who can but
prophesy?
The lion has
roared— who
will not fear? The Lord GOD has spoken— who
will not
prophesy?
Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; An
adversary there shall be even round about the land; and he shall bring down thy strength from thee, and thy palaces shall be
spoiled.
Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: “An enemy
will surround the land; he
will pull down your strongholds and
plunder your citadels.”
Thus saith the LORD; As the
shepherd taketh out of the mouth of the lion two legs, or a piece of an ear; so shall the children of Israel be taken out that dwell in Samaria in the corner of a bed, and in Damascus in a
couch.
This is what the LORD says: “As the
shepherd snatches from the mouth of the lion two legs or a piece of an ear, so the Israelites dwelling in Samaria
will be
rescued having just the corner of a bed or the
cushion of a
couch.
That in the day that I shall visit the transgressions of Israel upon him I
will also visit the altars of
Bethel: and the horns of the altar shall be cut off, and fall to the ground.
On the day I
punish Israel for their transgressions, I
will visit destruction on the altars of
Bethel; the horns of the altar
will be cut off, and they
will fall to the ground.
And I
will smite the winter house with the summer house; and the houses of ivory shall perish, and the great houses shall have an end, saith the LORD.
I
will tear down the winter house along with the summer house; the houses of ivory
will also perish, and the great houses
will come to an end,” declares the LORD.
The Lord GOD hath
sworn by his
holiness, that, lo, the days shall come upon you, that he
will take you away with hooks, and your
posterity with fishhooks.
The Lord GOD has
sworn by His
holiness: “Behold, the days are coming when you
will be taken away with hooks, and your
posterity with fishhooks.
And ye shall go out at the breaches, every cow at that which is before her; and ye shall cast them into the palace, saith the LORD.
You
will go out through broken walls, each one straight
ahead of her, and you
will be cast out toward Harmon,” declares the LORD.
Therefore thus will I do unto thee, O Israel: and because I will do this unto thee, prepare to meet thy God, O Israel.
“Therefore, that is what I will do to you, O Israel, and since I will do this to you, prepare to meet your God, O Israel!
For thus saith the Lord GOD; The city that went out by a thousand shall leave an hundred, and that which went forth by an hundred shall leave ten, to the house of Israel.
This is what the Lord GOD says: “The city that marches out a thousand strong will only see a hundred return, and the one that marches out a hundred strong will have but ten left in the house of Israel.”
Seek the LORD, and ye shall live; lest he break out like fire in the house of Joseph, and
devour it, and there be none to
quench it in
Bethel.
Seek the LORD and live, or He
will sweep like fire through the house of Joseph; it
will devour everything, with no one at
Bethel to
extinguish it.
Forasmuch therefore as your
treading is upon the poor, and ye take from him burdens of wheat: ye have built houses of
hewn stone, but ye shall not dwell in them; ye have planted pleasant vineyards, but ye shall not drink wine of them.
Therefore, because you
trample on the poor and exact from him a tax of grain, you
will never live in the stone houses you have built; you
will never drink the wine from the
lush vineyards you have planted.
Seek good, and not evil, that ye may live: and so the LORD, the God of hosts, shall be with you, as ye have spoken.
Seek good, not evil, so that you may live. And the LORD, the God of Hosts, will be with you, as you have claimed.
Hate the evil, and love the good, and establish judgment in the gate: it may be that the LORD God of hosts
will be
gracious unto the
remnant of Joseph.
Hate evil and love good; establish justice in the gate. Perhaps the LORD, the God of Hosts,
will be
gracious to the
remnant of Joseph.”
Therefore this is what the LORD, the God of Hosts, the Lord, says: “There
will be
wailing in all the public squares and
cries of ‘
Alas!
Alas!’ in all the streets. The farmer
will be summoned to
mourn, and the mourners to
wail.
And in all vineyards shall be
wailing: for I
will pass through thee, saith the LORD.
There
will be
wailing in all the vineyards, for I
will pass through your midst,” says the LORD.
Woe unto you that desire the day of the LORD! to what end is it for you? the day of the LORD is darkness, and not light.
Woe to you who long for the Day of the LORD! What
will the Day of the LORD be for you? It
will be darkness and not light.
As if a man did
flee from a lion, and a bear met him; or went into the house, and
leaned his hand on the wall, and a serpent
bit him.
It
will be like a man who flees from a lion, only to
encounter a bear, or who enters his house and rests his hand against the wall, only to be
bitten by a
snake.
Shall not the day of the LORD be darkness, and not light? even very dark, and no brightness in it?
Will not the Day of the LORD be darkness and not light, even
gloom with no brightness in it?
Though ye offer me burnt offerings and your meat offerings, I will not accept them: neither will I regard the peace offerings of your fat beasts.
Even though you offer Me burnt offerings and grain offerings, I
will not accept them; for your peace offerings of
fattened cattle I
will have no regard.
Take thou away from me the noise of thy songs; for I
will not hear the
melody of thy viols.
Take away from Me the noise of your songs! I
will not
listen to the music of your harps.
Therefore will I cause you to go into captivity beyond Damascus, saith the LORD, whose name is The God of hosts.
Therefore I will send you into exile beyond Damascus,” says the LORD, whose name is the God of Hosts.
Therefore now shall they go
captive with the first that go
captive, and the
banquet of them that stretched themselves shall be removed.
Therefore, you
will now go into exile as the first of the
captives, and your feasting and
lounging will come to an end.
