disguised himself, and put on other
raiment, and he went, and two men with him, and they came to the woman by night: and he said, I pray thee, divine unto me by the familiar spirit, and bring me him up, whom I shall name unto thee.
So Saul
disguised himself by putting on different
clothes, and he set out with two of his men. They came to the woman at night, and Saul said, “
Consult a spirit for me. Bring up for me the one I name.”
It came even to pass on the third day, that, behold, a man came out of the camp from Saul with his
clothes rent, and earth upon his head: and so it was, when he came to David, that he fell to the earth, and did
obeisance.
On the third day a man with
torn clothes and dust on his head arrived from Saul’s camp. When he came to David, he fell to the ground to pay him
homage.
Then David took hold on his clothes, and rent them; and likewise all the men that were with him:

clothes and
tore them, and all the men who were with him did the same.
Ye daughters of Israel,
weep over Saul, who
clothed you in scarlet, with other delights, who put on ornaments of gold upon your
apparel.

weep for Saul, who
clothed you in scarlet and
luxury, who decked your garments with ornaments of gold.
And David said to
Joab, and to all the people that were with him,
Rend your
clothes, and
gird you with
sackcloth, and
mourn before
Abner. And king David himself followed the
bier.
Then David ordered
Joab and all the people with him, “
Tear your
clothes, put on
sackcloth, and
mourn before
Abner.” And King David himself walked behind the funeral
bier.
Then David arose from the earth, and washed, and
anointed himself, and changed his
apparel, and came into the house of the LORD, and worshipped: then he came to his own house; and when he required, they set bread before him, and he did eat.
Then David got up from the ground, washed and
anointed himself, changed his
clothes, and went into the house of the LORD and worshiped. Then he went to his own house, and at his request they set food before him, and he
ate.
Then the king arose, and
tare his garments, and lay on the earth; and all his servants stood by with their

clothes torn.
So
Joab sent to Tekoa to bring a wise woman from there. He told her, “Please pretend to be a
mourner; put on
clothes for
mourning and do not
anoint yourself with oil. Act like a woman who has

And Mephibosheth the son of Saul came down to meet the king, and had neither dressed his feet, nor
trimmed his
beard, nor washed his
clothes, from the day the king departed until the day he came again in peace.
Then Mephibosheth, Saul’s grandson, went down to meet the king. He had not cared for his feet or
trimmed his
mustache or washed his
clothes from the day the king had left until the day he returned safely.
And
Amasa wallowed in blood in the midst of the
highway. And when the man saw that all the people stood still, he removed
Amasa out of the
highway into the field, and cast a
cloth upon him, when he saw that every one that came by him stood still.
But
Amasa wallowed in his blood in the middle of the road, and when the man saw that all the troops were
stopping there, he
dragged the body off the road into a field and threw a garment over it.

Aram, “and I will send you with a letter to the king of Israel.” So
Naaman departed, taking with him ten talents of silver, six thousand shekels of gold, and ten sets of
clothing.
And it came to pass, when the king of Israel had read the letter, that he rent his
clothes, and said, Am I God, to kill and to make alive, that this man
doth send unto me to recover a man of his
leprosy? wherefore consider, I pray you, and see how he seeketh a quarrel against me.
When the king of Israel read the letter, he
tore his
clothes and asked, “Am I God, killing and giving life, that this man expects me to cure a
leper? Surely you can see that he is seeking a quarrel with me!”
And it was so, when
Elisha the man of God had heard that the king of Israel had rent his
clothes, that he sent to the king, saying, Wherefore hast thou rent thy
clothes? let him come now to me, and he shall know that there is a prophet in Israel.
Now when
Elisha the man of God heard that the king of Israel had
torn his
clothes, he sent a message to the king: “Why have you
torn your
clothes? Please let the man come to me, and he will know that there is a prophet in Israel.”
And he said, All is well. My master hath sent me, saying, Behold, even now there be come to me from mount Ephraim two young men of the sons of the prophets: give them, I pray thee, a talent of silver, and two changes of garments.
“Everything is all right,” Gehazi replied. “My master has sent me to say, ‘I have just now discovered that two young men from the sons of the prophets have come to me from the hill country of Ephraim. Please give them a talent of silver and two sets of clothing.’”
And
Naaman said, Be content, take two talents. And he urged him, and bound two talents of silver in two bags, with two changes of garments, and laid them upon two of his servants; and they bare them before him.
But
Naaman insisted, “Please, take two talents.” And he urged Gehazi to accept them. Then he
tied up two talents of silver in two bags along with two sets of
clothing and gave them to two of his servants, who carried them
ahead of Gehazi.
And he said unto him, Went not mine heart with thee, when the man turned again from his
chariot to meet thee? Is it a time to receive money, and to receive garments, and oliveyards, and vineyards, and sheep, and oxen, and menservants, and maidservants?
But
Elisha questioned him, “Did not my spirit go with you when the man got down from his
chariot to meet you? Is this the time to accept money and

tore his
clothes. And as he passed by on the wall, the people saw the

And when these lepers came to the
uttermost part of the camp, they went into one tent, and did eat and drink, and carried thence silver, and gold, and
raiment, and went and
hid it; and came again, and entered into another tent, and carried thence also, and went and
hid it.
When the lepers reached the edge of the camp, they went into a tent to eat and drink. Then they carried off the silver, gold, and
clothing, and went and
hid them. On returning, they entered another tent, carried off some items from there, and
hid them.
And they went after them unto Jordan: and, lo, all the way was full of garments and vessels, which the Syrians had cast away in their
haste. And the messengers returned, and told the king.
And they
tracked them as far as the Jordan, and indeed, the whole way was
littered with the
clothing and
equipment the Arameans had thrown off in
haste. So the scouts returned and told the king.
And it came to pass on the
morrow, that he took a thick
cloth, and
dipped it in water, and spread it on his face, so that he died: and
Hazael reigned in his
stead.
But the next day
Hazael took a thick
cloth,
dipped it in water, and spread it over the king’s face. So Ben-
hadad died, and
Hazael reigned in his place.
And when she looked, behold, the king stood by a
pillar, as the manner was, and the princes and the trumpeters by the king, and all the people of the land
rejoiced, and
blew with
trumpets: and
Athaliah rent her
clothes, and
cried, Treason, Treason.
And she looked out and saw the king standing by the
pillar, according to the custom. The officers and trumpeters were beside the king, and all the people of the land were
rejoicing and blowing
trumpets. Then
Athaliah tore her
clothes and
screamed, “Treason! Treason!”
Then came Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, which was over the household, and Shebna the
scribe, and Joah the son of
Asaph the recorder, to
Hezekiah with their
clothes rent, and told him the words of
Rab-shakeh.
And it came to pass, when king
Hezekiah heard it, that he rent his
clothes, and covered himself with
sackcloth, and went into the house of the LORD.
On hearing this report, King
Hezekiah tore his
clothes, put on
sackcloth, and entered the house of the LORD.
And it came to pass, when the king had heard the words of the book of the law, that he rent his clothes.
When the king heard the words of the Book of the Law, he
tore his
clothes Because thine heart was tender, and thou hast humbled
thyself before the LORD, when thou heardest what I spake against this place, and against the inhabitants thereof, that they should become a
desolation and a
curse, and hast rent thy
clothes, and
wept before me; I also have heard thee, saith the LORD.
because your heart was tender and you humbled
yourself before the LORD when you heard what I spoke against this place and against its people, that they would become a
desolation and a
curse, and because you have
torn your
clothes and
wept before Me, I have heard you,’ declares the LORD.
And changed his prison garments: and he did eat bread continually before him all the days of his life.
So
Jehoiachin changed out of his prison
clothes, and he
dined regularly at the king’s table for the rest of his life.
And David was
clothed with a
robe of fine linen, and all the Levites that bare the ark, and the singers, and Chenaniah the master of the song with the singers: David also had upon him an
ephod of linen.
Now David was dressed in a
robe of fine linen, as were all the Levites who were carrying the ark, as well as the singers and Chenaniah, the director of music for the singers. David also
wore a linen
ephod.
And David lifted up his eyes, and saw the angel of the LORD stand between the earth and the heaven, having a drawn sword in his hand stretched out over Jerusalem. Then David and the elders of Israel, who were
clothed in
sackcloth, fell upon their faces.
When David lifted up his eyes and saw the angel of the LORD standing between heaven and earth, with a drawn sword in his hand stretched out over Jerusalem, David and the elders,
clothed in
sackcloth, fell facedown.
Now therefore arise, O LORD God, into thy resting place, thou, and the ark of thy strength: let thy priests, O LORD God, be
clothed with salvation, and let thy saints
rejoice in goodness.
Now therefore, arise, O LORD God, and enter Your resting place, You and the ark of Your might. May Your priests, O LORD God, be
clothed with salvation, and may Your godly ones
rejoice in goodness.
And they brought every man his present, vessels of silver, and vessels of gold, and
raiment,
harness, and spices, horses, and mules, a rate year by year.
Year after year, each
visitor would bring his tribute: articles of silver and gold,
clothing, weapons, spices, horses, and mules.
And the king of Israel and
Jehoshaphat king of Judah sat either of them on his throne,
clothed in their robes, and they sat in a void place at the entering in of the gate of Samaria; and all the prophets
prophesied before them.
Dressed in royal
attire, the king of Israel and
Jehoshaphat king of Judah were sitting on their thrones at the
threshing floor by the entrance of the gate of Samaria, with all the prophets
prophesying before them.
And she looked, and, behold, the king stood at his
pillar at the entering in, and the princes and the
trumpets by the king: and all the people of the land
rejoiced, and sounded with
trumpets, also the singers with instruments of musick, and such as taught to sing praise. Then
Athaliah rent her
clothes, and said, Treason, Treason.
And she looked out and saw the king standing by his
pillar at the entrance. The officers and trumpeters were beside the king, and all the people of the land were
rejoicing and blowing
trumpets, while the singers with musical instruments were leading the praises. Then
Athaliah tore her
clothes and
screamed, “Treason, treason!”
And the men which were expressed by name rose up, and took the
captives, and with the
spoil clothed all that were naked among them, and
arrayed them, and
shod them, and gave them to eat and to drink, and
anointed them, and carried all the feeble of them upon
asses, and brought them to
Jericho, the city of palm trees, to their brethren: then they returned to Samaria.
Then the men who were designated by name arose, took charge of the
captives, and provided from the
plunder clothing for the naked. They
clothed them, gave them
sandals and food and drink,
anointed their wounds, and put all the feeble on
donkeys. So they brought them to
Jericho, the City of Palms, to their brothers. Then they returned to Samaria.
And it came to pass, when the king had heard the words of the law, that he rent his clothes.
When the king heard the words of the Law, he
tore his
clothes Because thine heart was tender, and thou
didst humble
thyself before God, when thou heardest his words against this place, and against the inhabitants thereof, and humbledst
thyself before me, and
didst rend thy
clothes, and
weep before me; I have even heard thee also, saith the LORD.
because your heart was tender and you humbled
yourself before God when you heard His words against this place and against its people, and because you have humbled
yourself before Me and you have
torn your
clothes and
wept before Me, I have heard you,’ declares the LORD.
So neither I, nor my brethren, nor my servants, nor the men of the guard which followed me, none of us put off our clothes, saving that every one put them off for washing.
So neither I nor my brothers nor my servants nor the guards with me changed out of our clothes; each carried his weapon, even to go for water.
Yea, forty years
didst thou
sustain them in the wilderness, so that they lacked nothing; their
clothes waxed not old, and their feet swelled not.
For forty years You sustained them in the wilderness, so that they lacked nothing. Their clothes did not wear out and their feet did not swell.
When
Mordecai perceived all that was done,
Mordecai rent his
clothes, and put on
sackcloth with ashes, and went out into the midst of the city, and
cried with a loud and a bitter cry;
When
Mordecai learned of all that had happened, he
tore his
clothes, put on
sackcloth and ashes, and went out into the middle of the city,
wailing loudly and bitterly.
And came even before the king’s gate: for none might enter into the king’s gate
clothed with
sackcloth.
But he went only as far as the king’s gate, because the law prohibited
anyone wearing
sackcloth from entering that gate.
When
Esther’s maidens and eunuchs came and told her about
Mordecai, the queen was overcome with distress. She sent
clothes for
Mordecai to wear instead of his
sackcloth, but he would not accept them.
My flesh is
clothed with worms and clods of dust; my skin is broken, and become
loathsome.
They that
hate thee shall be
clothed with shame; and the dwelling place of the wicked shall come to
nought.
Your enemies will be clothed in shame, and the tent of the wicked will be no more.”
then You would
plunge me into the pit, and even my own
clothes would
despise me.
Thou hast
clothed me with skin and flesh, and hast
fenced me with bones and sinews.
You
clothed me with skin and flesh, and
knit me together with bones and sinews.
For you
needlessly demanded security from your brothers and deprived the naked of their
clothing.
They cause the naked to
lodge without
clothing, that they have no covering in the cold.
Without
clothing, they
spend the night naked; they have no covering against the cold.
They cause him to go naked without
clothing, and they take away the
sheaf from the
hungry;
I put on righteousness, and it
clothed me: my judgment was as a
robe and a
diadem.
I put on righteousness, and it
clothed me; justice was my
robe and my
turban.
If I have seen any perish for want of clothing, or any poor without covering;
if I have seen one perish for lack of
clothing, or a
needy man without a
cloak,
How thy garments are warm, when he quieteth the earth by the south wind?
You whose
clothes get hot when the land lies
hushed under the south wind,
Hath thou given the horse strength? hast thou
clothed his neck with
thunder?
Do you give strength to the horse or
adorn his neck with a
mane?
They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my
vesture.
They divide my garments among them and cast lots for my clothing.
But as for me, when they were sick, my
clothing was
sackcloth: I humbled my soul with fasting; and my prayer returned into mine own
bosom.
Yet when they were ill, I put on
sackcloth; I humbled myself with fasting, but my prayers returned unanswered.
Let them be
ashamed and brought to confusion together that
rejoice at mine
hurt: let them be
clothed with shame and dishonour that
magnify themselves against me.
May those who
gloat in my distress be
ashamed and confounded; may those who
exalt themselves over me be
clothed in shame and reproach.
The king’s daughter is all glorious within: her clothing is of wrought gold.
All glorious is the princess in her chamber; her
gown is
embroidered with gold.
The pastures are
clothed with flocks; the valleys also are covered over with corn; they
shout for joy, they also sing.
The pastures are
clothed with flocks, and the valleys are decked with grain. They
shout in triumph; indeed, they sing.
Surely the wrath of man shall praise thee: the remainder of wrath shalt thou restrain.
Even the wrath of man shall praise You; with the survivors of wrath You will
clothe Yourself.
The LORD reigneth, he is
clothed with majesty; the LORD is
clothed with strength,
wherewith he hath
girded himself: the world also is stablished, that it cannot be moved.
The LORD reigns! He is
robed in majesty; the LORD has
clothed and armed Himself with strength. The world indeed is firmly established; it cannot be moved.
They shall perish, but thou shalt
endure:
yea, all of them shall wax old like a garment; as a
vesture shalt thou change them, and they shall be changed:
They will perish, but You remain; they will all wear out like a garment. Like clothing You will change them, and they will be passed on.
Bless the LORD, O my soul. O LORD my God, thou art very great; thou art
clothed with honour and majesty.
Bless the LORD, O my soul! O LORD my God, You are very great; You are
clothed with
splendor and majesty.
As he
clothed himself with
cursing like as with his garment, so let it come into his
bowels like water, and like oil into his bones.
The
cursing that he
wore like a coat, may it
soak into his body like water, and into his bones like oil.
Let mine
adversaries be
clothed with shame, and let them cover themselves with their own confusion, as with a
mantle.
May my accusers be
clothed with disgrace; may they wear their shame like a
robe.
Let thy priests be
clothed with righteousness; and let thy saints
shout for joy.
May Your priests be
clothed with righteousness, and Your saints
shout for joy.
I will also
clothe her priests with salvation: and her saints shall
shout aloud for joy.
I will
clothe her priests with salvation, and her saints will sing out in joy.
His enemies will I
clothe with shame: but upon himself shall his crown
flourish.
I will
clothe his enemies with shame, but the crown upon him will
gleam.”
Can a man take fire in his
bosom, and his
clothes not be burned?
Can a man embrace fire and his clothes not be burned?
The lambs are for thy clothing, and the goats are the price of the field.
the lambs will provide you with clothing, and the goats with the price of a field.
She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet.
When it snows, she has no fear for her household, for they are all clothed in scarlet.
She maketh herself coverings of
tapestry; her
clothing is silk and purple.
She makes coverings for her bed; her clothing is fine linen and purple.
Strength and honour are her
clothing; and she shall
rejoice in time to come.
Strength and honor are her
clothing, and she can
laugh at the days to come.
When a man shall take hold of his brother of the house of his father, saying, Thou hast clothing, be thou our ruler, and let this ruin be under thy hand:
A man will seize his brother within his father’s house: “You have a
cloak—you be our leader! Take charge of this
heap of
rubble.”
In that day shall he
swear, saying, I will not be an
healer; for in my house is neither bread nor
clothing: make me not a ruler of the people.
On that day he will cry
aloud: “I am not a
healer. I have no food or
clothing in my house. Do not make me leader of the people!”
And it shall come to pass, that instead of sweet smell there shall be
stink; and instead of a
girdle a rent; and instead of well set hair
baldness; and instead of a stomacher a
girding of
sackcloth; and burning instead of beauty.
Instead of
fragrance there will be a
stench; instead of a belt, a rope; instead of styled hair,
baldness; instead of fine
clothing,
sackcloth; instead of beauty, shame.
And in that day seven women shall take hold of one man, saying, We will eat our own bread, and wear our own
apparel: only let us be called by thy name, to take away our reproach.
In that day seven women will take hold of one man and say, “We will eat our own bread and provide our own clothes. Just let us be called by your name. Take away our disgrace!”
And they shall be broken in the purposes thereof, all that make sluices and ponds for fish.
The workers in
cloth will be
dejected, and all the
hired workers will be sick at heart.
And I will
clothe him with thy
robe, and
strengthen him with thy
girdle, and I will commit thy government into his hand: and he shall be a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to the house of Judah.
I will
clothe him with your
robe and
tie your
sash around him. I will put your authority in his hand, and he will be a father to the dwellers of Jerusalem and to the house of Judah.
Yet her profits and wages will be set apart to the LORD; they will not be stored or saved, for her profit will go to those who live before the LORD, for abundant food and fine clothing.
Ye shall
defile also the covering of thy
graven images of silver, and the ornament of thy
molten images of gold: thou shalt cast them away as a
menstruous cloth; thou shalt say unto it, Get thee hence.
So you will
desecrate your silver-plated idols and your gold-plated images. You will throw them away like
menstrual cloths, saying to them, “Be gone!”
Then came Eliakim, the son of Hilkiah, that was over the household, and Shebna the
scribe, and Joah, the son of
Asaph, the recorder, to
Hezekiah with their

Rabshakeh.
And it came to pass, when king
Hezekiah heard it, that he rent his

sackcloth, and went into the house of the LORD.
On hearing this report, King
Hezekiah tore his
clothes, put on
sackcloth, and entered the house of the LORD.
Lift up thine eyes round about, and behold: all these gather themselves together, and come to thee. As I live, saith the LORD, thou shalt surely
clothe thee with them all, as with an ornament, and bind them on thee, as a
bride doeth.
Lift up your eyes and look around. They all gather together; they come to you. As surely as I live,” declares the LORD, “you will wear them all as
jewelry and put them on like a
bride.
Awake,
awake; put on thy strength, O
Zion; put on thy beautiful garments, O Jerusalem, the holy city: for henceforth there shall no more come into thee the
uncircumcised and the unclean.
Is it not to deal thy bread to the
hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not
thyself from thine own flesh?
Isn’t it to share your bread with the
hungry, to bring the poor and homeless into your home, to
clothe the naked when you see him, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?
Their webs shall not become garments, neither shall they cover themselves with their works: their works are works of iniquity, and the act of violence is in their hands.
Their cobwebs cannot be made into clothing, and they cannot cover themselves with their works. Their deeds are sinful deeds, and acts of violence are in their hands.
For he put on righteousness as a
breastplate, and an
helmet of salvation upon his head; and he put on the garments of
vengeance for
clothing, and was
clad with zeal as a
cloke.
I will greatly
rejoice in the LORD, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath
clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the
robe of righteousness, as a
bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments, and as a
bride adorneth herself with her jewels.
I will
rejoice greatly in the LORD, my soul will
exult in my God; for He has
clothed me with garments of salvation and
wrapped me in a
robe of righteousness, as a
bridegroom wears a priestly
headdress, as a
bride adorns herself with her jewels.
Wherefore art thou red in thine
apparel, and thy garments like him that treadeth in the winefat?
Why are Your clothes red, and Your garments like one who treads the winepress?
I have
trodden the winepress alone; and of the people there was none with me: for I will
tread them in mine anger, and
trample them in my
fury; and their blood shall be
sprinkled upon my garments, and I will
stain all my
raiment.
“I have
trodden the winepress alone, and no one from the nations was with Me. I
trampled them in My anger and
trod them down in My
fury; their blood
spattered My garments, and all My
clothes were
stained.
And when thou art
spoiled, what
wilt thou do? Though thou
clothest thyself with
crimson, though thou deckest thee with ornaments of gold, though thou rentest thy face with painting, in vain shalt thou make
thyself fair; thy lovers will
despise thee, they will seek thy life.
Silver spread into plates is brought from
Tarshish, and gold from Uphaz, the work of the
workman, and of the hands of the founder: blue and purple is their
clothing: they are all the work of
cunning men.
Hammered silver is brought from
Tarshish, and gold from Uphaz— the work of a
craftsman from the hands of a
goldsmith. Their
clothes are blue and purple, all fashioned by skilled workers.
So Ebed-melech took the men with him, and went into the house of the king under the treasury, and took thence old cast clouts and old
rotten rags, and let them down by cords into the
dungeon to Jeremiah.
Then Ebed-melech took the men with him and went to the king’s palace, to a place below the
storehouse. From there he took old rags and worn-out
clothes and lowered them with ropes to Jeremiah in the
cistern.
