Then the LORD opened the eyes of
Balaam, and he saw the angel of the LORD standing in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand: and he bowed down his head, and fell flat on his
face.
Then the LORD opened
Balaam’s eyes, and he saw the angel of the LORD standing in the road with a drawn sword in his hand. And
Balaam bowed low and fell
facedown.
And when
Balaam saw that it pleased the LORD to
bless Israel, he went not, as at other times, to seek for enchantments, but he set his
face toward the wilderness.
And when
Balaam saw that it pleased the LORD to
bless Israel, he did not resort to
sorcery as on previous occasions, but he turned his
face toward the wilderness.
And they removed from
Almon-diblathaim, and pitched in the mountains of Abarim, before
Nebo.
They set out from
Almon-diblathaim and camped in the mountains of Abarim
facing Nebo.
Ye shall not respect persons in judgment; but ye shall hear the small as well as the great; ye shall not be afraid of the face of man; for the judgment is God’s: and the cause that is too hard for you, bring it unto me, and I will hear it.
Show no
partiality in judging; hear both small and great alike. Do not be
intimidated by
anyone, for judgment belongs to God. And bring to me any case too difficult for you, and I will hear it.”
On this side Jordan, in the valley over against Beth-peor, in the land of Sihon king of the
Amorites, who dwelt at
Heshbon, whom Moses and the children of Israel
smote, after they were come forth out of Egypt:
while they were in the valley across the Jordan
facing Beth-peor in the land of Sihon king of the
Amorites, who lived in
Heshbon and was defeated by Moses and the Israelites after they had come out of Egypt.
The LORD talked with you face to face in the mount out of the midst of the fire,
The LORD spoke with you face to face out of the fire on the mountain.
(For the LORD thy God is a
jealous God among you) lest the anger of the LORD thy God be
kindled against thee, and destroy thee from off the
face of the earth.
For the LORD your God, who is among you, is a
jealous God. Otherwise the anger of the LORD your God will be
kindled against you, and He will
wipe you off the
face of the earth.
For thou art an holy people unto the LORD thy God: the LORD thy God hath chosen thee to be a special people unto himself, above all people that are upon the face of the earth.
For you are a people holy to the LORD your God. The LORD your God has chosen you to be a people for His prized possession out of all peoples on the face of the earth.
And repayeth them that
hate him to their
face, to destroy them: he will not be
slack to him that hateth him, he will repay him to his
face.
But those who
hate Him He repays to their
faces with destruction; He will not
hesitate to repay to his
face the one who hates Him.
As the nations which the LORD destroyeth before your
face, so shall ye perish; because ye would not be
obedient unto the voice of the LORD your God.
Like the nations that the LORD has destroyed before you, so you will perish if you do not obey the LORD your God.
Understand therefore this day, that the LORD thy God is he which goeth over before thee; as a
consuming fire he shall destroy them, and he shall bring them down before thy
face: so shalt thou drive them out, and destroy them quickly, as the LORD hath said unto thee.
But understand that
today the LORD your God goes across
ahead of you as a
consuming fire; He will destroy them and
subdue them before you. And you will drive them out and
annihilate them swiftly, as the LORD has promised you.
for thou art an holy people unto the LORD thy God, and the LORD hath chosen thee to be a peculiar people unto himself, above all the nations that are upon the earth.
for you are a people holy to the LORD your God. The LORD has chosen you to be a people for His prized possession out of all the peoples on the face of the earth.
And it shall be, if the wicked man be worthy to be beaten, that the judge shall cause him to lie down, and to be beaten before his face, according to his fault, by a certain number.
If the guilty man deserves to be beaten, the judge shall have him lie down and be
flogged in his presence with the number of lashes his crime warrants.
Then shall his brother’s wife come unto him in the presence of the elders, and loose his
shoe from off his foot, and
spit in his
face, and shall answer and say, So shall it be done unto that man that will not build up his brother’s house.
his brother’s widow shall go up to him in the presence of the elders, remove his
sandal,
spit in his
face, and declare, “This is what is done to the man who will not maintain his brother’s line.”
The LORD shall cause thine enemies that rise up against thee to be
smitten before thy
face: they shall come out against thee one way, and
flee before thee seven ways.
The LORD will cause the enemies who rise up against you to be defeated before you. They will march out against you in one direction but
flee from you in seven.
Thine ox shall be slain before thine eyes, and thou shalt not eat thereof: thine
ass shall be violently taken away from before thy
face, and shall not be restored to thee: thy sheep shall be given unto thine enemies, and thou shalt have none to
rescue them.
Your ox will be slaughtered before your eyes, but you will not eat any of it. Your
donkey will be taken away and not returned to you. Your flock will be given to your enemies, and no one will save you.
And the LORD shall give them up before your face, that ye may do unto them according unto all the commandments which I have commanded you.
The LORD will deliver them over to you, and you must do to them exactly as I have commanded you.
Then my anger shall be
kindled against them in that day, and I will
forsake them, and I will hide my
face from them, and they shall be
devoured, and many evils and troubles shall
befall them; so that they will say in that day, Are not these evils come upon us, because our God is not among us?
On that day My anger will burn against them, and I will
abandon them and hide My
face from them, so that they will be consumed, and many troubles and afflictions will
befall them. On that day they will say, ‘Have not these disasters come upon us because our God is no longer with us?’
And I will surely hide my face in that day for all the evils which they shall have wrought, in that they are turned unto other gods.
And on that day I will surely hide My face because of all the evil they have done by turning to other gods.
And he said, I will hide my
face from them, I will see what their end shall be: for they are a very
froward generation, children in whom is no faith.
He said: “I will hide My
face from them; I will see what will be their end. For they are a
perverse generation— children of unfaithfulness.
And Moses went up from the plains of Moab unto the mountain of
Nebo, to the top of
Pisgah, that is over against
Jericho. And the LORD shewed him all the land of
Gilead, unto
Dan,
Then Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount
Nebo, to the top of
Pisgah, which
faces Jericho. And the LORD showed him the whole land—from
Gilead as far as
Dan,
And he buried him in a valley in the land of Moab, over against Beth-peor: but no man knoweth of his
sepulchre unto this day.
And He buried him in a valley in the land of Moab
facing Beth-peor, and no one to this day knows the
location of his grave.
And there arose not a prophet since in Israel like unto Moses, whom the LORD knew face to face,
Since that time, no prophet has risen in Israel like Moses, whom the LORD knew face to face—
And he said,
Nay; but as captain of the host of the LORD am I now come. And Joshua fell on his
face to the earth, and did worship, and said unto him, What saith my lord unto his servant?
“Neither,” He replied. “I have now come as Commander of the LORD’s army.” Then Joshua fell facedown in reverence and asked Him, “What does my Lord have to say to His servant?”
And Joshua rent his clothes, and fell to the earth upon his
face before the ark of the LORD until the
eventide, he and the elders of Israel, and put dust upon their heads.
Then Joshua
tore his clothes and fell
facedown before the ark of the LORD until evening, as did the elders of Israel; and they all
sprinkled dust on their heads.
And the LORD said unto Joshua, Get thee up; wherefore liest thou thus upon thy face?
But the LORD said to Joshua, “Stand up! Why have you fallen on your face?
And all Israel, and their elders, and officers, and their judges, stood on this side the ark and on that side before the priests the Levites, which bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD, as well the stranger, as he that was born among them; half of them over against mount
Gerizim, and half of them over against mount
Ebal; as Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded before, that they should
bless the people of Israel.
All Israel, foreigners and citizens alike, with their elders, officers, and judges, stood on both sides of the ark of the covenant of the LORD
facing the
Levitical priests who carried it. Half of the people stood in front of Mount
Gerizim and half of them in front of Mount
Ebal, as Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded earlier, to
bless the people of Israel.
And Joshua called for them, and he spake unto them, saying, Wherefore have ye
beguiled us, saying, We are very far from you; when ye dwell among us?
Then Joshua summoned the Gibeonites and said, “Why did you
deceive us by telling us you live far away from us, when in
fact you live among us?
And the border went up toward Debir from the valley of
Achor, and so northward, looking toward
Gilgal, that is before the going up to Adummim, which is on the south side of the river: and the border passed toward the waters of En-shemesh, and the goings out thereof were at En-rogel:
Then the border went up to Debir from the Valley of
Achor, turning north to
Gilgal, which
faces the
Ascent of Adummim south of the
ravine. It continued along the waters of En-shemesh and came out at En-rogel.
And the border went up by the valley of the son of
Hinnom unto the south side of the Jebusite; the same is Jerusalem: and the border went up to the top of the mountain that lieth before the valley of
Hinnom westward, which is at the end of the valley of the giants northward:
From there the border went up the Valley of
Hinnom along the southern slope of the Jebusites (that is, Jerusalem) and ascended to the top of the hill that
faces the Valley of
Hinnom on the west, at the northern end of the Valley of
Rephaim.
And the border was drawn thence, and compassed the corner of the sea southward, from the hill that lieth before Beth-horon southward; and the goings out thereof were at Kirjath-
baal, which is Kirjath-jearim, a city of the children of Judah: this was the west quarter.
On the west side the border curved southward from the hill
facing Beth-horon on the south and came out at Kiriath-
baal (that is, Kiriath-jearim), a city of the sons of Judah. This was the western side.
And the border came down to the end of the mountain that lieth before the valley of the son of
Hinnom, and which is in the valley of the giants on the north, and descended to the valley of
Hinnom, to the side of Jebusi on the south, and descended to En-rogel,
Then it went down to the foot of the hill that
faces the Valley of
Hinnom at the northern end of the Valley of
Rephaim and ran down the Valley of
Hinnom toward the southern slope of the Jebusites and
downward to En-rogel.
And was drawn from the north, and went forth to En-shemesh, and went forth toward Geliloth, which is over against the going up of Adummim, and descended to the stone of Bohan the son of
Reuben,
From there it curved northward and proceeded to En-shemesh and on to Geliloth
facing the
Ascent of Adummim, and continued down to the Stone of Bohan son of
Reuben.
And if we have not rather done it for fear of this thing, saying, In time to come your children might speak unto our children, saying, What have ye to do with the LORD God of Israel?
But in fact we have done this for fear that in the future your descendants might say to ours, ‘What have you to do with the LORD, the God of Israel?
And when
Gideon perceived that he was an angel of the LORD,
Gideon said,
Alas, O Lord GOD! for because I have seen an angel of the LORD
face to
face.
When
Gideon realized that it was the angel of the LORD, he said, “Oh no, Lord GOD! I have seen the angel of the LORD
face to
face!”
For it came to pass, when the flame went up toward heaven from off the altar, that the angel of the LORD ascended in the flame of the altar. And
Manoah and his wife looked on it, and fell on their
faces to the ground.
When the flame went up from the altar to the sky, the angel of the LORD ascended in the flame. When
Manoah and his wife saw this, they fell
facedown to the ground.
And they
cried unto the children of
Dan. And they turned their
faces, and said unto
Micah, What aileth thee, that thou comest with such a company?
When they called out after them, the Danites turned to
face them and said to
Micah, “What is the matter with you that you have called out such a company?”
And they said, What one is there of the tribes of Israel that came not up to Mizpeh to the LORD? And, behold, there came none to the camp from
Jabesh-
gilead to the assembly.
So they asked, “Which one of the tribes of Israel failed to come up before the LORD at
Mizpah?” And, in
fact, no one from
Jabesh-
gilead had come to the camp for the assembly.
Then she fell on her face, and bowed herself to the ground, and said unto him, Why have I found grace in thine eyes, that thou shouldest take knowledge of me, seeing I am a stranger?
At this, she fell on her face, bowing low to the ground, and said to him, “Why have I found such favor in your eyes that you should take notice of me, even though I am a foreigner?”
And now is not Boaz of our kindred, with whose maidens thou
wast? Behold, he winnoweth barley to night in the threshingfloor.
Now is not Boaz, with whose servant girls you have been working, a relative of ours? In
fact,
tonight he is
winnowing barley on the
threshing floor.
And she said, Let thine
handmaid find grace in thy sight. So the woman went her way, and did eat, and her countenance was no more
sad.
“May your
maidservant find favor with you,” said
Hannah. Then she went on her way, and she began eating again, and her
face was no longer
downcast.
And when they of
Ashdod arose early on the
morrow, behold,
Dagon was fallen upon his
face to the earth before the ark of the LORD. And they took
Dagon, and set him in his place again.
When the people of
Ashdod got up early the next morning, there was
Dagon, fallen on his
face before the ark of the LORD. So they took
Dagon and returned him to his place.
And when they arose early on the
morrow morning, behold,
Dagon was fallen upon his
face to the ground before the ark of the LORD; and the head of
Dagon and both the palms of his hands were cut off upon the
threshold; only the
stump of
Dagon was left to him.
But when they got up early the next morning, there was
Dagon, fallen on his
face before the ark of the LORD, with his head and his hands broken off and lying on the
threshold. Only the
torso remained.
And another company turned the way to Beth-horon: and another company turned to the way of the border that looketh to the valley of
Zeboim toward the wilderness.

Zeboim facing the wilderness.
And
Jonathan spake good of David unto Saul his father, and said unto him, Let not the king sin against his servant, against David; because he hath not
sinned against thee, and because his works have been to thee-ward very good:
Then
Jonathan spoke well of David to his father Saul and said to him, “The king should not sin against his servant David; he has not
sinned against you. In
fact, his actions have been highly
beneficial to you.
But also thou shalt not cut off thy kindness from my house for ever: no, not when the LORD hath cut off the enemies of David every one from the face of the earth.
and do not ever cut off your loving devotion from my household—not even when the LORD cuts off every one of David’s enemies from the face of the earth.”
And as soon as the
lad was gone, David arose out of a place toward the south, and fell on his
face to the ground, and bowed himself three times: and they
kissed one another, and
wept one with another, until David exceeded.
When the young man had gone, David got up from the south side of the stone, fell
facedown, and bowed three times. Then he and
Jonathan kissed each other and
wept together—though David
wept more.
David also arose afterward, and went out of the cave, and
cried after Saul, saying, My lord the king. And when Saul looked behind him, David
stooped with his
face to the earth, and bowed himself.
After that, David got up, went out of the cave, and called out to Saul, “My lord the king!” When Saul looked behind him, David bowed facedown in reverence
And when
Abigail saw David, she hasted, and lighted off the
ass, and fell before David on her
face, and bowed herself to the ground,
When
Abigail saw David, she quickly got off the
donkey, fell
facedown, and bowed before him.
And she arose, and bowed herself on her
face to the earth, and said, Behold, let thine
handmaid be a servant to wash the feet of the servants of my lord.
She arose, then bowed
facedown and said, “Here is your
maidservant, ready to serve and to wash the feet of my lord’s servants.”
Now therefore, let not my blood fall to the earth before the
face of the LORD: for the king of Israel is come out to seek a
flea, as when one
doth hunt a
partridge in the mountains.
So do not let my blood fall to the ground far from the presence of the LORD. For the king of Israel has come out to look for a
flea, like one who hunts a
partridge in the mountains.”
And he said unto her, What form is he of? And she said, An old man cometh up; and he is covered with a
mantle. And Saul perceived that it was Samuel, and he
stooped with his
face to the ground, and bowed himself.
“What does he look like?” asked Saul. “An old man is coming up,” she replied. “And he is wearing a
robe.” So Saul knew that it was Samuel, and he bowed
facedown in reverence.
And
Abner said again to
Asahel, Turn thee aside from following me: wherefore should I
smite thee to the ground? how then should I hold up my
face to
Joab thy brother?
And he said, Well; I will make a league with thee: but one thing I require of thee, that is, Thou shalt not see my face, except thou first bring Michal Saul’s daughter, when thou comest to see my face.
“Good,” replied David, “I will make a covenant with you. But there is one thing I require of you: Do not appear before me unless you bring Saul’s daughter Michal when you come to see me.”
And all the people took notice of it, and it pleased them: as
whatsoever the king did pleased all the people.
All the people took note and were pleased. In fact, everything the king did pleased them.
Now when Mephibosheth, the son of
Jonathan, the son of Saul, was come unto David, he fell on his
face, and did reverence. And David said, Mephibosheth. And he answered, Behold thy servant!
And when Mephibosheth son of
Jonathan, the son of Saul, came to David, he fell
facedown in reverence. Then David said, “Mephibosheth!” “I am your servant,” he replied.
And Jonadab, the son of Shimeah David’s brother, answered and said, Let not my lord suppose that they have slain all the young men the king’s sons; for Amnon only is dead: for by the appointment of
Absalom this hath been determined from the day that he forced his sister Tamar.
But Jonadab, the son of David’s brother Shimeah, spoke up: “My lord must not think they have killed all the sons of the king, for only Amnon is dead. In
fact,
Absalom has
planned this since the day Amnon
violated his sister Tamar.
And when the woman of Tekoah spake to the king, she fell on her
face to the ground, and did
obeisance, and said, Help, O king.
When the woman from Tekoa went to the king, she fell
facedown in
homage and said, “Help me, O king!”
And
Joab fell to the ground on his
face, and bowed himself, and
thanked the king: and
Joab said,
Today thy servant knoweth that I have found grace in thy sight, my lord, O king, in that the king hath fulfilled the request of his servant.
Joab fell
facedown in
homage and blessed the king. “
Today,” said
Joab, “your servant knows that he has found favor with you, my lord the king, because the king has granted his request.”
And the king said, Let him turn to his own house, and let him not see my
face. So
Absalom returned to his own house, and saw not the king’s
face.
But the king added, “He may return to his house, but he must not see my
face.” So
Absalom returned to his own house, but he did not see the king.
So
Absalom dwelt two full years in Jerusalem, and saw not the king’s
face.
Now
Absalom lived in Jerusalem two years without seeing the
face of the king.
And
Absalom answered
Joab, Behold, I sent unto thee, saying, Come
hither, that I may send thee to the king, to say, Wherefore am I come from Geshur? it had been good for me to have been there still: now therefore let me see the king’s
face; and if there be any iniquity in me, let him kill me.
“Look,” said
Absalom, “I sent for you and said, ‘Come here. I want to send you to the king to ask: Why have I come back from Geshur? It would be better for me if I were still there.’ So now, let me see the king’s
face, and if there is iniquity in me, let him kill me.”
So
Joab came to the king, and told him: and when he had called for
Absalom, he came to the king, and bowed himself on his
face to the ground before the king: and the king
kissed Absalom.
So
Joab went and told the king, and David summoned
Absalom, who came to him and bowed
facedown before him. Then the king
kissed Absalom.
Whereas thou camest but
yesterday, should I this day make thee go up and down with us? seeing I go
whither I may, return thou, and take back thy brethren: mercy and truth be with thee.
In
fact, you arrived only
yesterday; should I make you
wander around with us
today while I do not know where I am going? Go back and take your brothers with you. May the LORD show you loving devotion and faithfulness.”
For the battle was there scattered over the
face of all the country: and the wood
devoured more people that day than the sword
devoured.
The battle spread over the whole
countryside, and that day the forest
devoured more people than the sword.
And
Ahimaaz called, and said unto the king, All is well. And he fell down to the earth upon his
face before the king, and said, Blessed be the LORD thy God, which hath delivered up the men that lifted up their hand against my lord the king.
Then
Ahimaaz called out to the king, “All is well!” And he bowed
facedown before the king. He continued, “Blessed be the LORD your God! He has delivered up the men who raised their hands against my lord the king.”
But the king covered his
face, and the king
cried with a loud voice, O my son
Absalom, O
Absalom, my son, my son!
But the king covered his
face and
cried out at the top of his voice, “O my son
Absalom! O
Absalom, my son, my son!”
And
Joab came into the house to the king, and said, Thou hast shamed this day the
faces of all thy servants, which this day have saved thy life, and the lives of thy sons and of thy daughters, and the lives of thy wives, and the lives of thy concubines;
Then
Joab went into the house and said to the king, “
Today you have disgraced all your servants who have saved your life and the lives of your sons and daughters, of your wives, and of your concubines.
Then there was a famine in the days of David three years, year after year; and David enquired of the LORD. And the LORD answered, It is for Saul, and for his
bloody house, because he
slew the Gibeonites.
During the reign of David there was a famine for three successive years, and David sought the face of the LORD. And the LORD said, “It is because of the blood shed by Saul and his family, because he killed the Gibeonites.”
And Araunah looked, and saw the king and his servants coming on toward him: and Araunah went out, and bowed himself before the king on his face upon the ground.

And they told the king, saying, Behold
Nathan the prophet. And when he was come in before the king, he bowed himself before the king with his
face to the ground.

facedown before the king.
Then Bath-
sheba bowed with her
face to the earth, and did reverence to the king, and said, Let my lord king David live for ever.
Bathsheba bowed
facedown in
homage to the king and said, “May my lord King David live
forever!”
And he said, Thou knowest that the kingdom was mine, and that all Israel set their
faces on me, that I should reign:
howbeit the kingdom is turned about, and is become my brother’s: for it was his from the LORD.
“You know that the
kingship was mine,” he said. “All Israel expected that I should reign, but the
kingship has turned to my brother, for it has come to him from the LORD.
And there were windows in three rows, and light was against light in three ranks.
There were three rows of high windows facing one another in three tiers.
And all the doors and posts were square, with the windows: and light was against light in three ranks.
All the doorways had rectangular frames, with the openings facing one another in three tiers.
It stood upon twelve oxen, three looking toward the north, and three looking toward the west, and three looking toward the south, and three looking toward the east: and the sea was set above upon them, and all their hinder parts were inward.
The Sea stood on twelve oxen, three facing north, three facing west, three facing south, and three facing east. The Sea rested on them, with all their hindquarters toward the center.
And the king turned his face about, and blessed all the congregation of Israel: (and all the congregation of Israel stood;)
And as the whole assembly of Israel stood there, the king turned around and blessed them all
And the king answered and said unto the man of God, Intreat now the
face of the LORD thy God, and pray for me, that my hand may be restored me again. And the man of God
besought the LORD, and the king’s hand was restored him again, and became as it was before.
Then the king
responded to the man of God, “
Intercede with the LORD your God and pray that my hand may be restored.” So the man of God
interceded with the LORD, and the king’s hand was restored to him as it was before.
And this thing became sin unto the house of
Jeroboam, even to cut it off, and to destroy it from off the
face of the earth.
And this was the sin of the house of
Jeroboam that led to its
extermination and destruction from the
face of the earth.
For thus saith the LORD God of Israel, The barrel of meal shall not waste, neither shall the
cruse of oil fail, until the day that the LORD sendeth rain upon the earth.
for this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘The
jar of flour will not be exhausted and the
jug of oil will not run dry until the day the LORD sends rain upon the
face of the earth.’”
And it came to pass after many days, that the word of the LORD came to
Elijah in the third year, saying, Go,
shew thyself unto
Ahab; and I will send rain upon the earth.
After a long time, in the third year of the
drought, the word of the LORD came to
Elijah: “Go and present
yourself to
Ahab, and I will send rain upon the
face of the earth.”
And as
Obadiah was in the way, behold,
Elijah met him: and he knew him, and fell on his
face, and said, Art thou that my lord
Elijah?
Now as
Obadiah went on his way,
Elijah suddenly met him. When
Obadiah recognized him, he fell
facedown and said, “Is it you, my lord
Elijah?”
And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces: and they said, The LORD, he is the God; the LORD, he is the God.
When all the people saw this, they fell facedown and said, “The LORD, He is God! The LORD, He is God!”
So
Ahab went up to eat and to drink. And
Elijah went up to the top of
Carmel; and he cast himself down upon the earth, and put his
face between his knees,
So
Ahab went up to eat and drink. But
Elijah climbed to the summit of
Carmel, bent down on the ground, and put his
face between his knees.
And it was so, when
Elijah heard it, that he
wrapped his
face in his
mantle, and went out, and stood in the entering in of the cave. And, behold, there came a voice unto him, and said, What doest thou here,
Elijah?
When
Elijah heard it, he
wrapped his
face in his
cloak and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave. Suddenly a voice came to him and said, “What are you doing here,
Elijah?”
So the prophet departed, and waited for the king by the way, and
disguised himself with ashes upon his
face.
and the prophet went and waited on the road for the king,
disguising himself with a
bandage over his eyes.
And he hasted, and took the ashes away from his
face; and the king of Israel
discerned him that he was of the prophets.
Then the prophet quickly removed the
bandage from his eyes, and the king of Israel recognized him as one of the prophets.
And
Ahab came into his house heavy and displeased because of the word which
Naboth the Jezreelite had spoken to him: for he had said, I will not give thee the inheritance of my fathers. And he laid him down upon his bed, and turned away his
face, and would eat no bread.
So
Ahab went to his palace,
sullen and
angry because
Naboth the Jezreelite had told him, “I will not give you the inheritance of my fathers.” He lay down on his bed, turned his
face away, and refused to eat.
But
Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah went near, and
smote Micaiah on the
cheek, and said, Which way went the Spirit of the LORD from me to speak unto thee?
Then
Zedekiah son of Chenaanah went up, struck Micaiah in the
face, and demanded, “Which way did the Spirit of the LORD go when He departed from me to speak with you?”
And the battle increased that day: and the king was stayed up in his
chariot against the Syrians, and died at even: and the blood ran out of the wound into the midst of the
chariot.
The battle
raged throughout that day, and the king was
propped up in his
chariot facing the Arameans. And the blood from his wound ran out
onto the floor of the
chariot, and that evening he died.
And fifty men of the sons of the prophets went, and stood to view
afar off: and they two stood by Jordan.
Then a company of fifty of the sons of the prophets went and stood at a distance,
facing Elijah and
Elisha as the two of them stood by the Jordan.
And when the sons of the prophets which were to view at
Jericho saw him, they said, The spirit of
Elijah doth rest on
Elisha. And they came to meet him, and bowed themselves to the ground before him.
When the sons of the prophets who were
facing him from
Jericho saw what had happened, they said, “The spirit of
Elijah rests on
Elisha.” And they went to meet him and bowed down to the ground before him.
Then he said to Gehazi,
Gird up thy loins, and take my staff in thine hand, and go thy way: if thou meet any man,
salute him not; and if any
salute thee, answer him not again: and lay my staff upon the
face of the child.
So
Elisha said to Gehazi, “
Tie up your garment, take my staff in your hand, and go! If you meet
anyone, do not
greet him, and if
anyone greets you, do not answer him. Then lay my staff on the boy’s
face.”
And Gehazi passed on before them, and laid the staff upon the
face of the child; but there was neither voice, nor hearing. Wherefore he went again to meet him, and told him, saying, The child is not
awaked.
Gehazi went on
ahead of them and laid the staff on the boy’s
face, but there was no sound or
response. So he went back to meet
Elisha and told him, “The boy has not
awakened.”
And
Elisha said unto him, Go, say unto him, Thou mayest certainly recover:
howbeit the LORD hath shewed me that he shall surely die.
Elisha answered, “Go and tell him, ‘You will surely recover.’ But the LORD has shown me that in
fact he will die.”
And it came to pass on the
morrow, that he took a thick cloth, and
dipped it in water, and spread it on his
face, so that he died: and
Hazael reigned in his
stead.
But the next day
Hazael took a thick cloth,
dipped it in water, and spread it over the king’s
face. So Ben-
hadad died, and
Hazael reigned in his place.
And when
Jehu was come to
Jezreel,
Jezebel heard of it; and she painted her
face, and
tired her head, and looked out at a window.
Now when
Jehu arrived in
Jezreel,
Jezebel heard of it. So she painted her eyes, adorned her head, and looked down from a window.
And he lifted up his face to the window, and said, Who is on my side? who? And there looked out to him two or three eunuchs.
He looked up at the window and called out, “Who is on my side? Who?” And two or three eunuchs looked down at him.
And the
carcase of
Jezebel shall be as dung upon the
face of the field in the portion of
Jezreel; so that they shall not say, This is
Jezebel.
And
Jezebel’s body will lie like dung in the field on the plot of ground at
Jezreel, so that no one can say: This is
Jezebel.’”
