And the Syrians had gone out by companies, and had brought away
captive out of the land of Israel a little
maid; and she waited on
Naaman’s wife.
At this time the Arameans had gone out in bands and had taken a young
girl from the land of Israel, and she was serving
Naaman’s wife.
And one went in, and told his lord, saying, Thus and thus said the
maid that is of the land of Israel.
And
Naaman went and told his master what the
girl from the land of Israel had said.
And he said unto him, Went not mine heart with thee, when the man turned again from his
chariot to meet thee? Is it a time to receive money, and to receive garments, and oliveyards, and vineyards, and sheep, and oxen, and menservants, and
maidservants?
But
Elisha questioned him, “Did not my spirit go with you when the man got down from his
chariot to meet you? Is this the time to accept money and clothing, olive groves and vineyards, sheep and oxen, menservants and
maidservants?
Yet the LORD would not destroy Judah for David his servant’s sake, as he promised him to give him
alway a light, and to his children.
Yet for the sake of His servant David, the LORD was unwilling to destroy Judah, since He had promised to
maintain a lamp for David and his descendants
forever.
Out of the spoils won in battles did they
dedicate to
maintain the house of the LORD.
They had dedicated some of the
plunder from their battles to the repair of the house of the LORD.
And the greater house he cieled with
fir tree, which he overlaid with fine gold, and set
thereon palm trees and chains.
He
paneled the
main room with
cypress, which he overlaid with fine gold and decorated with palm trees and chains.
The wings of these cherubims spread themselves forth twenty cubits: and they stood on their feet, and their faces were inward.
So the total wingspan of these
cherubim was twenty cubits. They stood on their feet, facing the
main room.
And the
snuffers, and the basons, and the spoons, and the censers, of pure gold: and the entry of the house, the inner doors thereof for the most holy place, and the doors of the house of the temple, were of gold.
the
wick trimmers,
sprinkling bowls, ladles, and censers of purest gold; and the gold doors of the temple: the inner doors to the Most Holy Place as well as the doors of the
main hall.
Then hear thou from the heavens their prayer and their
supplication, and
maintain their cause.
then may You hear from heaven their prayer and their
plea, and may You
uphold their cause.
Then hear thou from the heavens, even from thy dwelling place, their prayer and their supplications, and
maintain their cause, and
forgive thy people which have
sinned against thee.
then may You hear from heaven, Your dwelling place, their prayer and petition, and may You
uphold their cause. May You
forgive Your people who
sinned against You.
Howbeit the LORD would not destroy the house of David, because of the covenant that he had made with David, and as he promised to give a light to him and to his sons for ever.
Yet the LORD was unwilling to destroy the house of David, because of the covenant He had made with David, and since He had promised to
maintain a lamp for David and his descendants
forever.
Therefore he brought upon them the king of the Chaldees, who
slew their young men with the sword in the house of their sanctuary, and had no
compassion upon young man or
maiden, old man, or him that
stooped for age: he gave them all into his hand.
So He brought up against them the king of the Chaldeans, who put their young men to the sword in the sanctuary,
sparing neither young men nor young women, neither elderly nor infirm. God gave them all into the hand of
Nebuchadnezzar,
Beside their servants and their maids, of whom there were seven thousand three hundred thirty and seven: and there were among them two hundred singing men and singing women.
in addition to their 7,337 menservants and maidservants, as well as their 200 male and female singers.
Now because we have
maintenance from the king’s palace, and it was not meet for us to see the king’s dishonour, therefore have we sent and
certified the king;
Now because we are in the service of the palace and it is not fitting for us to allow the king to be dishonored, we have sent to inform the king
Beside their manservants and their maidservants, of whom there were seven thousand three hundred thirty and seven: and they had two hundred forty and five singing men and singing women.
in addition to their 7,337 menservants and maidservants, as well as their 245 male and female singers.
And let the
maiden which pleaseth the king be queen instead of Vashti. And the thing pleased the king; and he did so.
Then let the young woman who pleases the king become queen in place of Vashti.” This suggestion pleased the king, and he acted accordingly.
And he brought up Hadassah, that is,
Esther, his uncle’s daughter: for she had neither father nor mother, and the
maid was fair and beautiful; whom
Mordecai, when her father and mother were dead, took for his own daughter.
And
Mordecai had brought up Hadassah (that is,
Esther), the daughter of his uncle, because she did not have a father or mother. The young woman was lovely in form and appearance, and when her father and mother had died,
Mordecai had taken her in as his own daughter.
So it came to pass, when the king’s commandment and his decree was heard, and when many
maidens were gathered together unto
Shushan the palace, to the
custody of Hegai, that
Esther was brought also unto the king’s house, to the
custody of Hegai, keeper of the women.
When the king’s command and edict had been proclaimed, many young women gathered at the citadel of
Susa under the care of Hegai.
Esther was also taken to the palace and placed under the care of Hegai, the
custodian of the women.
And the
maiden pleased him, and she obtained kindness of him; and he speedily gave her her things for
purification, with such things as belonged to her, and seven
maidens, which were meet to be given her, out of the king’s house: and he preferred her and her
maids unto the best place of the house of the women.
And the young woman pleased him and obtained his favor, so he quickly provided her with beauty treatments and the special diet. He assigned to her seven select
maidservants from the palace and transferred her with them to the best place in the
harem.
Now when every
maid’s turn was come to go in to king
Ahasuerus, after that she had been twelve months, according to the manner of the women, (for so were the days of their purifications accomplished, to wit, six months with oil of
myrrh, and six months with sweet odours, and with other things for the
purifying of the women;)
In the twelve months before her turn to go to King
Xerxes, the
harem regulation required each young woman to receive beauty treatments with oil of
myrrh for six months, and then with perfumes and cosmetics for another six months.
Then thus came every
maiden unto the king;
whatsoever she desired was given her to go with her out of the house of the women unto the king’s house.
When the young woman would go to the king, she was given whatever she requested to take with her from the
harem to the king’s palace.
When
Esther’s
maidens and eunuchs came and told her about
Mordecai, the queen was overcome with distress. She sent clothes for
Mordecai to wear instead of his
sackcloth, but he would not accept them.
Go, gather together all the Jews that are present in
Shushan, and fast ye for me, and neither eat nor drink three days, night or day: I also and my
maidens will fast likewise; and so will I go in unto the king, which is not according to the law: and if I perish, I perish.
“Go and
assemble all the Jews who can be found in
Susa, and fast for me. Do not eat or drink for three days, night or day, and I and my
maidens will fast as you do. After that, I will go to the king, even though it is against the law. And if I perish, I perish!”
For we are sold, I and my people, to be destroyed, to be slain, and to perish. But if we had been sold for
bondmen and
bondwomen, I had held my tongue, although the enemy could not
countervail the king’s damage.
For my people and I have been sold out to destruction, death, and
annihilation. If we had merely been sold as menservants and
maidservants, I would have remained silent, because no such distress would
justify burdening the king.”
Though he
slay me, yet will I trust in him: but I will
maintain mine own ways before him.
Though He
slay me, I will hope in Him. I will still defend my ways to His face.
They that dwell in mine house, and my
maids, count me for a stranger: I am an
alien in their sight.
My guests and maidservants count me as a stranger; I am a foreigner in their sight.
I will never say that you are right; I will
maintain my
integrity until I die.
I made a covenant with mine eyes; why then should I think upon a
maid?
“I have made a covenant with my eyes. How then could I
gaze with desire at a virgin?
Wilt thou play with him as with a bird? or
wilt thou bind him for thy
maidens?
Can you
pet him like a bird or put him on a
leash for your
maidens?
For thou hast maintained my right and my cause; thou satest in the throne judging right.
For You have
upheld my just cause; You sit on Your throne judging righteously.
The LORD is the portion of mine inheritance and of my cup: thou maintainest my lot.
The LORD is my chosen portion and my cup; You have made my lot secure.
The singers went before, the players on instruments followed after; among them were the damsels playing with
timbrels.
The singers lead the way, the musicians follow after, among the maidens playing tambourines.
The fire consumed their young men; and their maidens were not given to marriage.
Fire consumed His young men, and their
maidens were left without
wedding songs.
O turn unto me, and have mercy upon me; give thy strength unto thy servant, and save the son of thine
handmaid.
Turn to me and have mercy; grant Your strength to Your servant; save the son of Your
maidservant.
O LORD, truly I am thy servant; I am thy servant, and the son of thine
handmaid: thou hast loosed my bonds.
Truly, O LORD, I am Your servant; I am Your servant, the son of Your
maidservant; You have broken my bonds.
Behold, as the eyes of servants look unto the hand of their masters, and as the eyes of a
maiden unto the hand of her
mistress; so our eyes wait upon the LORD our God, until that he have mercy upon us.
As the eyes of servants look to the hand of their master, as the eyes of a
maidservant look to the hand of her
mistress, so our eyes are on the LORD our God until He shows us mercy.
I know that the LORD will
maintain the cause of the
afflicted, and the right of the poor.
I know that the LORD upholds justice for the poor and defends the cause of the
needy.
Both young men, and maidens; old men, and children:
young men and maidens, old and young together.
She crieth in the chief place of
concourse, in the openings of the gates: in the city she uttereth her words, saying,
That thou mayest regard
discretion, and that thy lips may keep knowledge.
that you may
maintain discretion and your lips may preserve knowledge.
She hath sent forth her maidens: she crieth upon the highest places of the city,
She has sent out her maidservants; she calls out from the heights of the city.
He that hath knowledge spareth his words: and a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit.
A man of knowledge restrains his words, and a man of understanding maintains a calm spirit.
Mercy and truth preserve the king: and his throne is upholden by mercy.
Loving devotion and faithfulness preserve a king; by these he maintains his throne.
And thou shalt have goats’ milk enough for thy food, for the food of thy household, and for the maintenance for thy maidens.
You will have
plenty of goats’ milk to feed you— food for your household and
nourishment for your
maidservants.
For the
transgression of a land many are the princes thereof: but by a man of understanding and knowledge the state thereof shall be prolonged.
A land in rebellion has many rulers, but a man of understanding and knowledge maintains order.
The way of an eagle in the air; the way of a serpent upon a rock; the way of a ship in the midst of the sea; and the way of a man with a
maid.
the way of an eagle in the sky, the way of a
snake on a rock, the way of a ship at sea, and the way of a man with a
maiden.
She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens.
She rises while it is still night to provide food for her household and portions for her maidservants.
I got me servants and maidens, and had servants born in my house; also I had great possessions of great and small cattle above all that were in Jerusalem before me:
I acquired menservants and
maidservants, and servants were born in my house. I also owned more herds and flocks than
anyone in Jerusalem before me,
Because of the savour of thy good ointments thy name is as
ointment poured forth, therefore do the virgins love thee.
As the
lily among thorns, so is my love among the daughters.
Like a
lily among the thorns is my
darling among the
maidens.
There are sixty queens and eighty concubines, and maidens without number,
My
dove, my
undefiled is but one; she is the only one of her mother, she is the choice one of her that bare her. The daughters saw her, and blessed her;
yea, the queens and the concubines, and they praised her.
but my
dove, my perfect one, is unique, the
favorite of the mother who bore her. The
maidens see her and call her blessed; the queens and concubines sing her praises.
And the people shall take them, and bring them to their place: and the house of Israel shall possess them in the land of the LORD for servants and handmaids: and they shall take them
captives, whose
captives they were; and they shall rule over their oppressors.
The nations will
escort Israel and bring it to its homeland. Then the house of Israel will possess the nations as menservants and
maidservants in the LORD’s land. They will make
captives of their captors and rule over their oppressors.
And it shall be, as with the people, so with the priest; as with the servant, so with his master; as with the
maid, so with her
mistress; as with the
buyer, so with the seller; as with the
lender, so with the
borrower; as with the taker of
usury, so with the giver of
usury to him.
Thus saith the LORD, Keep ye judgment, and do justice: for my salvation is near to come, and my righteousness to be revealed.
This is what the LORD says: “Maintain justice and do what is right, for My salvation is coming soon, and My righteousness will be revealed.
Can a
maid forget her ornaments, or a
bride her
attire? yet my people have forgotten me days without number.
Then shall the virgin
rejoice in the dance, both young men and old together: for I will turn their
mourning into joy, and will comfort them, and make them
rejoice from their sorrow.
Then the
maidens will
rejoice with dancing, young men and old as well. I will turn their
mourning into joy, and give them comfort and joy for their sorrow.
That every man should let his
manservant, and every man his
maidservant, being an Hebrew or an
Hebrewess, go free; that none should serve himself of them, to wit, of a
Jew his brother.
that each man should free his Hebrew slaves, both male and female, and no one should hold his fellow
Jew in
bondage.
Now when all the princes, and all the people, which had entered into the covenant, heard that every one should let his
manservant, and every one his
maidservant, go free, that none should serve themselves of them any more, then they obeyed, and let them go.
So all the officials and all the people who entered into this covenant agreed that they would free their menservants and
maidservants and no longer hold them in
bondage. They obeyed and released them,
But afterward they turned, and caused the servants and the handmaids, whom they had let go free, to return, and brought them into subjection for servants and for handmaids.
but later they changed their minds and took back the menservants and maidservants they had freed, and they forced them to become slaves again.
But ye turned and
polluted my name, and caused every man his servant, and every man his
handmaid, whom ye had set at liberty at their pleasure, to return, and brought them into subjection, to be unto you for servants and for handmaids.
But now you have changed your minds and
profaned My name. Each of you has taken back the menservants and
maidservants whom you had set at liberty to go wherever they wanted, and you have again forced them to be your slaves.
Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Behold, I will break the bow of
Elam, the chief of their might.
This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Behold, I will
shatter Elam’s bow, the
mainstay of their might.
With thee also will I break in pieces man and woman; and with thee will I break in pieces old and young; and with thee will I break in pieces the young man and the
maid;
The ways of
Zion do
mourn, because none come to the solemn feasts: all her gates are
desolate: her priests
sigh, her virgins are
afflicted, and she is in bitterness.
The roads to
Zion mourn, because no one comes to her appointed feasts. All her gates are deserted; her priests
groan, her
maidens grieve, and she herself is bitter with
anguish.
The LORD is righteous; for I have rebelled against his commandment: hear, I pray you, all people, and behold my sorrow: my virgins and my young men are gone into captivity.
The LORD is righteous, for I have rebelled against His command.
Listen, all you people; look upon my suffering. My young men and
maidens have gone into captivity.
The young and the old lie on the ground in the streets: my virgins and my young men are fallen by the sword; thou hast slain them in the day of thine anger; thou hast killed, and not
pitied.
Both young and old lie together in the dust of the streets. My young men and
maidens have fallen by the sword. You have slain them in the day of Your anger; You have slaughtered them without
compassion.
They
ravished the women in
Zion, and the
maids in the cities of Judah.
Women have been
ravished in
Zion, virgins in the cities of Judah.
Slay utterly old and young, both
maids, and little children, and women: but come not near any man upon whom is the mark; and begin at my sanctuary. Then they began at the ancient men which were before the house.
Slaughter the old men, the young men and
maidens, the women and children; but do not go near
anyone who has the mark. Now begin at My sanctuary.” So they began with the elders who were before the temple.
And fire is gone out of a rod of her branches, which hath
devoured her fruit, so that she hath no strong rod to be a
sceptre to rule. This is a
lamentation, and shall be for a
lamentation.
Fire has gone out from its
main branch and
devoured its fruit; on it no strong branch remains fit for a ruler’s
scepter.’ This is a
lament and shall be used as a
lament.”
And her daughters which are in the field shall be slain by the sword; and they shall know that I am the LORD.
and the villages on her mainland will be slain by the sword. Then they will know that I am the LORD.’
He shall
slay with the sword thy daughters in the field: and he shall make a fort against thee, and cast a mount against thee, and lift up the
buckler against thee.
He will slaughter the villages of your
mainland with the sword; he will set up siege works against you, build a
ramp to your walls, and raise his shields against you.
Neither shall they take for their wives a widow, nor her that is put away: but they shall take maidens of the seed of the house of Israel, or a widow that had a priest before.
And they shall not marry a widow or a
divorced woman, but must marry a virgin of the descendants of the house of Israel, or a widow of a priest.
Therefore turn thou to thy God: keep mercy and judgment, and wait on thy God continually.
But you must return to your God, maintaining love and justice, and always waiting on your God.
And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit.
Even on My menservants and maidservants, I will pour out My Spirit in those days.
That
pant after the dust of the earth on the head of the poor, and turn aside the way of the
meek: and a man and his father will go in unto the same
maid, to
profane my holy name:
They
trample on the heads of the poor as on the dust of the earth; they
push the
needy out of their way. A man and his father have relations with the same
girl and so
profane My holy name.
And Huzzab shall be led away
captive, she shall be brought up, and her
maids shall lead her as with the voice of doves, tabering upon their breasts.
It is decreed that the city be exiled and carried away; her
maidservants moan like doves, and beat upon their breasts.
For how great is his goodness, and how great is his beauty! corn shall make the young men
cheerful, and new wine the
maids.
How lovely they will be, and how beautiful! Grain will make the young men
flourish, and new wine, the young women.
He said unto them, Give place: for the
maid is not dead, but sleepeth. And they
laughed him to
scorn.
“Go away,” He told them. “The
girl is not dead, but
asleep.” And they
laughed at Him.
But when the people were put forth, he went in, and took her by the hand, and the
maid arose.
After the crowd had been put outside, Jesus went in and took the
girl by the hand, and she got up.
And great multitudes came unto him, having with them those that were
lame, blind,
dumb,
maimed, and many others, and cast them down at Jesus’ feet; and he
healed them:
Large crowds came to Him, bringing the
lame, the blind, the
crippled, the
mute, and many others, and laid them at His feet, and He
healed them.
Insomuch that the multitude wondered, when they saw the
dumb to speak, the
maimed to be whole, the
lame to walk, and the blind to see: and they
glorified the God of Israel.
Wherefore if thy hand or thy foot
offend thee, cut them off, and cast them from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life
halt or
maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into
everlasting fire.
If your hand or your foot causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life
crippled or
lame than to have two hands and two feet and be thrown into the eternal fire.
And when he was gone out into the
porch, another
maid saw him, and said unto them that were there, This fellow was also with Jesus of
Nazareth.
When Peter had gone out to the
gateway, another servant
girl saw him and said to the people there, “This man was with Jesus of
Nazareth.”
And he said unto them, Full well ye
reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition.
He went on to say, “You
neatly set aside the command of God to
maintain your own tradition.
And if thy hand
offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life
maimed, than having two hands to go into
hell, into the fire that never shall be
quenched:
If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life
crippled than to have two hands and go into
hell, into the
unquenchable fire.
And as Peter was beneath in the palace, there cometh one of the maids of the high priest:
While Peter was in the
courtyard below, one of the servant girls of the high priest came down
And a
maid saw him again, and began to say to them that stood by, This is one of them.
There the servant
girl saw him and again said to those standing nearby, “This man is one of them.”
And when he came into the house, he suffered no man to go in, save Peter, and James, and John, and the father and the mother of the
maiden.
When He entered the house, He did not allow
anyone to go in with Him except Peter, John, James, and the child’s father and mother.
And he put them all out, and took her by the hand, and called, saying,
Maid, arise.
But Jesus took her by the hand and called out, “Child, get up!”
But and if that servant say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; and shall begin to beat the menservants and
maidens, and to eat and drink, and to be
drunken;
But suppose that servant says in his heart, ‘My master will be a long time in coming,’ and he begins to beat the menservants and
maidservants, and to eat and drink and get
drunk.
But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the
maimed, the
lame, the blind:
So that servant came, and shewed his lord these things. Then the master of the house being
angry said to his servant, Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in
hither the poor, and the
maimed, and the
halt, and the blind.
The servant returned and reported all this to his master. Then the owner of the house became
angry and said to his servant, ‘Go out quickly into the streets and
alleys of the city, and bring in the poor, the
crippled, the blind, and the
lame.’
But a certain
maid beheld him as he sat by the fire, and earnestly looked upon him, and said, This man was also with him.
A servant
girl saw him seated in the firelight and looked intently at him. “This man also was with Him,” she said.
And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall
prophesy:
Even on My menservants and
maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days, and they will
prophesy.
And
herein do I exercise myself, to have always a conscience void of offence toward God, and toward men.
In this hope, I
strive always to
maintain a clear conscience before God and man.
And when they had taken up the anchors, they committed themselves unto the sea, and loosed the
rudder bands, and hoised up the
mainsail to the wind, and made toward shore.
Cutting away the anchors, they left them in the sea as they
loosened the ropes that held the rudders. Then they
hoisted the
foresail to the wind and made for the
beach.
Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.
For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from works of the law.
