I have seen the wicked in great power, and spreading himself like a green bay tree.
I have seen a wicked,
ruthless man flourishing like a well-rooted native tree,
God is known in her palaces for a refuge.
God is in her citadels; He has shown Himself to be a fortress.
But God will
redeem my soul from the power of the grave: for he shall receive me.
Selah.
But God will
redeem my life from
Sheol, for He will surely take me to
Himself.
Selah And the heavens shall declare his righteousness: for God is judge
himself.
Selah.
And the heavens
proclaim His righteousness, for God
Himself is Judge.
Selah Lo, this is the man that made not God his strength; but trusted in the abundance of his riches, and strengthened himself in his wickedness.
“Look at the man who did not make God his refuge, but trusted in the abundance of his wealth and strengthened himself by destruction.”
For it was not an enemy that reproached me; then I could have borne it: neither was it he that
hated me that did
magnify himself against me; then I would have
hid myself from him:
For it is not an enemy who insults me; that I could
endure. It is not a
foe who rises against me; from him I could hide.
Rebuke the company of
spearmen, the multitude of the bulls, with the
calves of the people, till every one submit
himself with pieces of silver:
scatter thou the people that delight in war.
Rebuke the beast in the reeds, the
herd of bulls among the
calves of the nations, until it submits, bringing bars of silver.
Scatter the nations who delight in war.
O God, thou art terrible out of thy holy places: the God of Israel is he that giveth strength and power unto his people. Blessed be God.
O God, You are
awesome in Your sanctuary; the God of Israel
Himself gives strength and power to His people. Blessed be God!
And of
Zion it shall be said, This and that man was born in her: and the highest
himself shall establish her.
And it will be said of
Zion: “This one and that one were born in her, and the Most High
Himself will establish her.”
The LORD reigneth, he is clothed with majesty; the LORD is clothed with strength,
wherewith he hath
girded himself: the world also is stablished, that it cannot be moved.
The LORD reigns! He is
robed in majesty; the LORD has clothed and armed
Himself with strength. The world indeed is firmly established; it cannot be moved.
Who coverest
thyself with light as with a garment: who stretchest out the heavens like a
curtain:
He wraps Himself in light as with a garment; He stretches out the heavens like a tent,
As he clothed
himself with
cursing like as with his garment, so let it come into his
bowels like water, and like oil into his bones.
The
cursing that he
wore like a coat, may it
soak into his body like water, and into his bones like oil.
Who humbleth himself to behold the things that are in heaven, and in the earth!
He humbles Himself to behold the heavens and the earth.
His enemies will I
clothe with shame: but upon
himself shall his crown
flourish.
I will
clothe his enemies with shame, but the crown upon him will
gleam.”

himself, and Israel for his peculiar
treasure.
For the LORD has chosen Jacob as His own, Israel as His
treasured possession.
For the LORD will judge his people, and he will
repent himself concerning his servants.
His own
iniquities shall take the wicked
himself, and he shall be
holden with the cords of his sins.

whoso committeth
adultery with a woman lacketh understanding: he that doeth it destroyeth his own soul.
But he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul: all they that
hate me love death.
But he who fails to find me harms
himself; all who
hate me love death.”
He that reproveth a
scorner getteth to
himself shame: and he that rebuketh a wicked man getteth
himself a
blot.
He who corrects a
mocker brings shame on
himself; he who rebukes a wicked man taints
himself.
The
merciful man doeth good to his own soul: but he that is cruel troubleth his own flesh.
A kind man benefits himself, but a cruel man brings trouble on himself.

A generous soul will
prosper, and he who refreshes others will
himself be refreshed.

despised, and hath a servant, is better than he that honoureth
himself, and lacketh bread.

A
shrewd man keeps his knowledge to
himself, but a
foolish heart proclaims its folly.
There is that maketh himself rich, yet hath nothing: there is that maketh himself poor, yet hath great riches.
One pretends to be rich, but has nothing; another pretends to be poor, yet has great wealth.
The
backslider in heart shall be filled with his own ways: and a good man shall be satisfied from
himself.
The
backslider in heart receives the fill of his own ways, but a good man is rewarded for his ways.
He that refuseth instruction despiseth his own soul: but he that heareth reproof getteth understanding.
He who ignores discipline despises
himself, but
whoever heeds correction gains understanding.

himself:
yea, even the wicked for the day of evil.
The LORD has made everything for His purpose— even the wicked for the day of
disaster.
He that laboureth laboureth for himself; for his mouth craveth it of him.
A worker’s
appetite works for him because his hunger drives him
onward.
Through desire a man, having separated himself, seeketh and intermeddleth with all wisdom.
He who isolates
himself pursues
selfish desires; he rebels against all sound judgment.
A man that hath friends must
shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.
A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who stays closer than a brother.
He that getteth wisdom loveth his own soul: he that keepeth understanding shall find good.
He who acquires wisdom loves himself; one who safeguards understanding will find success.
Whoso stoppeth his ears at the cry of the poor, he also shall cry
himself, but shall not be heard.
Whoever shuts his ears to the cry of the poor, he too shall cry out and receive no answer.
A
prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth
himself: but the simple pass on, and are punished.
The
prudent see danger and take cover, but the simple keep going and suffer the consequences.
Debate thy cause with thy neighbour
himself; and discover not a secret to another:
Whoso boasteth
himself of a false gift is like clouds and wind without rain.
Like clouds and wind without rain is the man who boasts of gifts never given.
He that hateth dissembleth with his lips, and layeth up
deceit within him;
A
hateful man disguises
himself with his speech, but he lays up
deceit in his heart.
A
prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth
himself; but the simple pass on, and are punished.
The
prudent see danger and take cover; but the simple keep going and pay the penalty.
Whoso causeth the righteous to go
astray in an evil way, he shall fall
himself into his own pit: but the upright shall have good things in possession.
He who leads the upright along the path of evil will fall into his own pit, but the
blameless will
inherit what is good.
He that trusteth in his own heart is a
fool: but
whoso walketh wisely, he shall be delivered.
He who trusts in
himself is a
fool, but one who walks in wisdom will be safe.
The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame.
A rod of correction imparts wisdom, but a child left to himself disgraces his mother.
Moreover the profit of the earth is for all: the king himself is served by the field.
The produce of the earth is taken by all; the king himself profits from the fields.
For what hath the wise more than the
fool? what hath the poor, that knoweth to walk before the living?
What advantage, then, has the wise man over the
fool? What gain comes to the poor man who knows how to conduct
himself before others?
The one who
quarries stones may be injured by them, and he who splits logs endangers
himself.
My beloved is like a
roe or a young
hart: behold, he standeth behind our wall, he looketh forth at the windows,
shewing himself through the
lattice.
King Solomon has made his carriage out of the timber of
Lebanon.
I opened to my beloved; but my beloved had withdrawn himself, and was gone: my soul failed when he spake: I sought him, but I could not find him; I called him, but he gave me no answer.
I opened for my beloved, but he had turned and gone. My heart
sank at his departure. I sought him, but did not find him. I called, but he did not answer.
And the mean man boweth down, and the great man humbleth
himself: therefore
forgive them not.
So mankind is brought low, and man is humbled— do not
forgive them!
In that day a man shall cast his idols of silver, and his idols of gold, which they made each one for himself to worship, to the moles and to the bats;
In that day men will cast away to the moles and bats their idols of silver and gold— the idols they made to worship.
And the people shall be
oppressed, every one by another, and every one by his neighbour: the child shall
behave himself proudly against the ancient, and the base against the honourable.
The people will
oppress one another, man against man,
neighbor against
neighbor; the young will rise up against the old, and the base against the honorable.
But the LORD of hosts shall be
exalted in judgment, and God that is holy shall be
sanctified in righteousness.
But the LORD of Hosts will be
exalted by His justice, and the holy God will show
Himself holy in righteousness.
Therefore the Lord
himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name
Immanuel.
Therefore the Lord
Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call Him
Immanuel.
Sanctify the LORD of hosts
himself; and let him be your fear, and let him be your
dread.
The LORD of Hosts is the One you shall regard as holy. Only He should be feared; only He should be
dreaded.
And it shall come to pass, when it is seen that Moab is
weary on the high place, that he shall come to his sanctuary to pray; but he shall not prevail.
When Moab appears on the high place, when he wearies himself and enters his sanctuary to pray, it will do him no good.
And the land of Judah shall be a terror unto Egypt, every one that maketh mention thereof shall be afraid in himself, because of the counsel of the LORD of hosts, which he hath determined against it.
The land of Judah will bring terror to Egypt; whenever Judah is mentioned, Egypt will
tremble over what the LORD of Hosts has
planned against it.
And the LORD shall be known to Egypt, and the Egyptians shall know the LORD in that day, and shall do sacrifice and
oblation;
yea, they shall
vow a
vow unto the LORD, and perform it.
The LORD will make
Himself known to Egypt, and on that day Egypt will acknowledge the LORD. They will worship with sacrifices and offerings; they will make vows to the LORD and
fulfill them.
What hast thou here? and whom hast thou here, that thou hast
hewed thee out a
sepulchre here, as he that heweth him out a
sepulchre on high, and that graveth an
habitation for
himself in a rock?
What are you doing here, and who authorized you to
carve out a tomb for
yourself here—to
chisel your tomb in the height and cut your resting place in the rock?
For the bed is shorter than that a man can stretch
himself on it: and the covering narrower than that he can
wrap himself in it.
Indeed, the bed is too short to stretch out on, and the
blanket too small to
wrap around you.
For the LORD shall rise up as in mount Perazim, he shall be
wroth as in the valley of
Gibeon, that he may do his work, his strange work; and bring to pass his act, his strange act.
For the LORD will rise up as at Mount Perazim. He will
rouse Himself as in the Valley of
Gibeon, to do His work, His strange work, and to perform His task, His
disturbing task.
And though the Lord give you the bread of
adversity, and the water of
affliction, yet shall not thy teachers be removed into a corner any more, but thine eyes shall see thy teachers:
The Lord will give you the bread of
adversity and the water of
affliction, but your Teacher will no longer hide
Himself—with your own eyes you will see Him.
For thus hath the LORD spoken unto me, Like as the lion and the young lion
roaring on his prey, when a multitude of
shepherds is called forth against him, he will not be afraid of their voice, nor
abase himself for the noise of them: so shall the LORD of hosts come down to fight for mount
Zion, and for the hill thereof.
For this is what the LORD has said to me: “Like a lion
roaring or a young lion over its prey— and though a band of
shepherds is called out against it, it is not
terrified by their
shouting or subdued by their
clamor— so the LORD of Hosts will come down to do battle on Mount
Zion and its heights.
And am I now come up without the LORD against this land to destroy it? the LORD said unto me, Go up against this land, and destroy it.
So now, was it apart from the LORD that I have come up against this land to destroy it? The LORD Himself said to me, ‘Go up against this land and destroy it.’”
And it came to pass, when king
Hezekiah heard it, that he rent his clothes, and covered
himself with
sackcloth, and went into the house of the LORD.
On hearing this report, King
Hezekiah tore his clothes, put on
sackcloth, and entered the house of the LORD.
What shall I say? he hath both spoken unto me, and himself hath done it: I shall go softly all my years in the bitterness of my soul.
What can I say? He has spoken to me, and He
Himself has done this. I will walk slowly all my years because of the
anguish of my soul.
One shall say, I am the LORD’S; and another shall call
himself by the name of Jacob; and another shall
subscribe with his hand unto the LORD, and
surname himself by the name of Israel.
One will say, ‘I belong to the LORD,’ another will call himself by the name of Jacob, and still another will write on his hand, ‘The LORD’s,’ and will take the name of Israel.”
He heweth him down cedars, and taketh the
cypress and the oak, which he strengtheneth for
himself among the trees of the forest: he planteth an ash, and the rain
doth nourish it.
He cuts down cedars or retrieves a
cypress or oak. He lets it grow strong among the trees of the forest. He plants a
laurel, and the rain makes it grow.
Then shall it be for a man to burn: for he will take thereof, and warm
himself;
yea, he kindleth it, and baketh bread;
yea, he maketh a god, and worshippeth it; he maketh it a
graven image, and falleth down
thereto.
It serves as fuel for man. He takes some of it to warm
himself, and he kindles a fire and bakes his bread; he even fashions it into a god and worships it; he makes an
idol and bows down to it.
He burneth part thereof in the fire; with part thereof he eateth flesh; he roasteth
roast, and is satisfied:
yea, he warmeth
himself, and saith,
Aha, I am warm, I have seen the fire:
He burns half of it in the fire, and he roasts meat on that half. He eats the
roast and is satisfied. Indeed, he warms
himself and says, “
Ah! I am warm; I see the fire.”
He feedeth on ashes: a
deceived heart hath turned him aside, that he cannot deliver his soul, nor say, Is there not a lie in my right hand?
He feeds on ashes. His
deluded heart has led him
astray, and he cannot deliver
himself or say, “Is not this thing in my right hand a lie?”
Sing, O ye heavens; for the LORD hath done it:
shout, ye lower parts of the earth: break forth into singing, ye mountains, O forest, and every tree therein: for the LORD hath redeemed Jacob, and
glorified himself in Israel.
Sing for joy, O heavens, for the LORD has done this;
shout aloud, O depths of the earth. Break forth in song, O mountains, you forests and all your trees. For the LORD has redeemed Jacob, and revealed His glory in Israel.
Verily thou art a God that hidest
thyself, O God of Israel, the Saviour.
Truly You are a God who hides
Himself, O God of Israel, the
Savior.
For thus saith the LORD that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited: I am the LORD; and there is none else.
For thus says the LORD, who created the heavens—He is God; He formed the earth and fashioned it; He established it; He did not
create it to be empty, but formed it to be inhabited: “I am the LORD, and there is no other.
Neither let the son of the stranger, that hath joined
himself to the LORD, speak, saying, The LORD hath utterly separated me from his people: neither let the
eunuch say, Behold, I am a dry tree.
Let no foreigner who has joined
himself to the LORD say, “The LORD will utterly
exclude me from His people.” And let the
eunuch not say, “I am but a dry tree.”
Is it such a fast that I have chosen? a day for a man to
afflict his soul? is it to bow down his head as a
bulrush, and to spread
sackcloth and ashes under him?
wilt thou call this a fast, and an acceptable day to the LORD?
Is this the fast I have chosen: a day for a man to deny
himself, to bow his head like a reed, and to spread out
sackcloth and ashes? Will you call this a fast and a day acceptable to the LORD?
Yea, truth faileth; and he that departeth from evil maketh
himself a prey: and the LORD saw it, and it displeased him that there was no judgment.
Truth is missing, and
whoever turns from evil becomes prey. The LORD looked and was displeased that there was no justice.
For he put on righteousness as a
breastplate, and an
helmet of salvation upon his head; and he put on the garments of
vengeance for clothing, and was
clad with zeal as a
cloke.
I will greatly
rejoice in the LORD, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the
robe of righteousness, as a
bridegroom decketh
himself with ornaments, and as a
bride adorneth herself with her jewels.
I will
rejoice greatly in the LORD, my soul will
exult in my God; for He has clothed me with garments of salvation and
wrapped me in a
robe of righteousness, as a
bridegroom wears a priestly
headdress, as a
bride adorns herself with her jewels.
But they rebelled, and
vexed his holy Spirit: therefore he was turned to be their enemy, and he fought against them.
But they rebelled and
grieved His Holy Spirit. So He turned and became their enemy, and He
Himself fought against them.
That led them by the right hand of Moses with his glorious arm, dividing the water before them, to make
himself an
everlasting name?
who sent His glorious arm to lead them by the right hand of Moses, who divided the waters before them to gain for
Himself everlasting renown,
And there is none that calleth upon thy name, that stirreth up
himself to take hold of thee: for thou hast
hid thy face from us, and hast consumed us, because of our
iniquities.
No one calls on Your name or strives to take hold of You. For You have hidden Your face from us and delivered us into the hand of our iniquity.
That he who blesseth
himself in the earth shall
bless himself in the God of truth; and he that sweareth in the earth shall
swear by the God of truth; because the former troubles are forgotten, and because they are
hid from mine eyes.
Whoever invokes a blessing in the land will do so by the God of truth, and
whoever takes an oath in the land will
swear by the God of truth. For the former troubles will be forgotten and hidden from My sight.
O LORD, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps.
I know, O LORD, that a man’s way is not his own; no one who walks directs his own steps.
Both the great and the small shall die in this land: they shall not be buried, neither shall men
lament for them, nor cut themselves, nor make themselves
bald for them:
“Both great and small will die in this land. They will not be buried or
mourned, nor will
anyone cut
himself or
shave his head for them.
Shall a man make gods unto himself, and they are no gods?
Can man make gods for himself? Such are not gods!”
Can any hide himself in secret places that I shall not see him? saith the LORD. Do not I fill heaven and earth? saith the LORD.
“Can a man hide in secret places where I cannot see him?” declares the LORD. “Do I not fill the heavens and the earth?” declares the LORD.
The LORD hath made thee priest in the
stead of Jehoiada the priest, that ye should be officers in the house of the LORD, for every man that is
mad, and maketh
himself a prophet, that thou shouldest put him in prison, and in the stocks.
‘The LORD has appointed you priest in place of Jehoiada, to be the chief officer in the house of the LORD, responsible for any
madman who acts like a prophet—you must put him in stocks and neck irons.
Now therefore why hast thou not reproved Jeremiah of Anathoth, which maketh himself a prophet to you?
So now, why have you not
rebuked Jeremiah of Anathoth, who poses as a prophet among you?
I have surely heard Ephraim
bemoaning himself thus; Thou hast
chastised me, and I was
chastised, as a
bullock unaccustomed to the yoke: turn thou me, and I shall be turned; for thou art the LORD my God.
I have surely heard Ephraim’s
moaning: ‘You disciplined me severely, like an untrained
calf. Restore me, that I may return, for You are the LORD my God.
That every man should let his
manservant, and every man his
maidservant, being an Hebrew or an
Hebrewess, go free; that none should serve
himself of them, to wit, of a
Jew his brother.
that each man should free his Hebrew slaves, both male and female, and no one should hold his fellow
Jew in
bondage.
At the end of seven years let ye go every man his brother an Hebrew, which hath been sold unto thee; and when he hath served thee six years, thou shalt let him go free from thee: but your fathers
hearkened not unto me, neither inclined their ear.
Every seventh year, each of you must free his Hebrew brother who has sold
himself to you. He may serve you six years, but then you must let him go free. But your fathers did not
listen or
incline their ear.
Then Jeremiah went forth out of Jerusalem to go into the land of Benjamin, to separate himself thence in the midst of the people.
Jeremiah started to leave Jerusalem to go to the land of Benjamin to claim his portion there among the people.
And I will
kindle a fire in the houses of the gods of Egypt; and he shall burn them, and carry them away
captives: and he shall
array himself with the land of Egypt, as a
shepherd putteth on his garment; and he shall go forth from thence in peace.
I will
kindle a fire in the temples of the gods of Egypt, and
Nebuchadnezzar will burn those temples and take their gods as
captives. So he will
wrap himself with the land of Egypt as a
shepherd wraps
himself in his garment, and he will depart from there unscathed.
And Moab shall be destroyed from being a people, because he hath
magnified himself against the LORD.
Moab will be destroyed as a nation because he
vaunted himself against the LORD.
But I have made
Esau bare, I have uncovered his secret places, and he shall not be able to hide
himself: his seed is
spoiled, and his brethren, and his neighbours, and he is not.
But I will strip
Esau bare; I will uncover his hiding places, and he will be unable to
conceal himself. His descendants will be destroyed along with his relatives and neighbors, and he will be no more.
Against him that bendeth let the archer bend his bow, and against him that lifteth
himself up in his
brigandine: and
spare ye not her young men; destroy ye utterly all her host.
Do not let the archer bend his bow or put on his
armor. Do not
spare her young men;
devote all her army to destruction!
The LORD of hosts hath
sworn by
himself, saying, Surely I will fill thee with men, as with caterpillers; and they shall lift up a
shout against thee.
The LORD of Hosts has
sworn by
Himself: “Surely I will fill you up with men as with locusts, and they will
shout in triumph over you.”
Her
filthiness is in her skirts; she remembereth not her last end; therefore she came down wonderfully: she had no comforter. O LORD, behold my
affliction: for the enemy hath
magnified himself.
Her uncleanness stains her skirts; she did not consider her end. Her
downfall was
astounding; there was no one to comfort her. Look, O LORD, on my
affliction, for the enemy has triumphed!
For the seller shall not return to that which is sold, although they were yet alive: for the vision is touching the whole multitude thereof, which shall not return; neither shall any
strengthen himself in the iniquity of his life.
The seller will surely not recover what he sold while both remain alive. For the vision concerning the whole multitude will not be
revoked, and because of their iniquity, not one of them will preserve his life.
