Wherefore my
fury and mine anger was poured forth, and was
kindled in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem; and they are wasted and
desolate, as at this day.
Therefore My wrath and anger poured out and
burned in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem, so that they have become the
desolate ruin they are
today.
In that ye
provoke me unto wrath with the works of your hands,
burning incense unto other gods in the land of Egypt,
whither ye be gone to dwell, that ye might cut
yourselves off, and that ye might be a
curse and a reproach among all the nations of the earth?
Why are you
provoking Me to anger by the work of your hands by
burning incense to other gods in the land of Egypt, where you have gone to reside? As a result, you will be cut off and will become an object of
cursing and reproach among all the nations of the earth.
Then all the men which knew that their wives had burned incense unto other gods, and all the women that stood by, a great multitude, even all the people that dwelt in the land of Egypt, in Pathros, answered Jeremiah, saying,
Then all the men who knew that their wives were burning incense to other gods, and all the women standing by—a great assembly—along with all the people living in the land of Egypt and in Pathros, said to Jeremiah,
But we will certainly do
whatsoever thing goeth forth out of our own mouth, to
burn incense unto the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto her, as we have done, we, and our fathers, our kings, and our princes, in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem: for then had we
plenty of
victuals, and were well, and saw no evil.
Instead, we will do everything we
vowed to do: We will
burn incense to the Queen of Heaven and offer drink offerings to her, just as we, our fathers, our kings, and our officials did in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem. At that time we had
plenty of food and good things, and we saw no
disaster.
But since we left off to burn incense to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto her, we have wanted all things, and have been consumed by the sword and by the famine.
But from the time we stopped burning incense to the Queen of Heaven and pouring out drink offerings to her, we have lacked everything and have been perishing by sword and famine.”
And when we burned incense to the queen of heaven, and poured out drink offerings unto her, did we make her cakes to worship her, and pour out drink offerings unto her, without our men?
“Moreover,” said the women, “when we
burned incense to the Queen of Heaven and poured out drink offerings to her, was it without our husbands’ knowledge that we made
sacrificial cakes in her image and poured out drink offerings to her?”
The incense that ye burned in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem, ye, and your fathers, your kings, and your princes, and the people of the land, did not the LORD remember them, and came it not into his mind?
“As for the incense you burned in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem—you, your fathers, your kings, your officials, and the people of the land—did the LORD not remember and bring this to mind?
Because ye have
burned incense, and because ye have
sinned against the LORD, and have not obeyed the voice of the LORD, nor walked in his law, nor in his statutes, nor in his
testimonies; therefore this evil is happened unto you, as at this day.
Because you
burned incense and
sinned against the LORD, and did not obey the voice of the LORD or walk in His instruction, His statutes, and His
testimonies, this
disaster has
befallen you, as you see
today.”
Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, saying; Ye and your wives have both spoken with your mouths, and fulfilled with your hand, saying, We will surely perform our vows that we have
vowed, to
burn incense to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto her: ye will surely
accomplish your vows, and surely perform your vows.
This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: As for you and your wives, you have spoken with your mouths and fulfilled with your hands your words: ‘We will surely perform our vows that we have made to
burn incense to the Queen of Heaven and to pour out drink offerings to her.’ Go
ahead, then, do what you have promised! Keep your vows!
Moreover I will cause to cease in Moab, saith the LORD, him that offereth in the high places, and him that burneth incense to his gods.
In Moab, declares the LORD, I will bring an end to those who make offerings on the high places and burn incense to their gods.
Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will cause an
alarm of war to be heard in Rabbah of the
Ammonites; and it shall be a
desolate heap, and her daughters shall be
burned with fire: then shall Israel be heir unto them that were his heirs, saith the LORD.
Therefore, behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will sound the battle cry against Rabbah of the
Ammonites. It will become a
heap of ruins, and its villages will be
burned. Then Israel will drive out their dispossessors, says the LORD.
Behold, I am against thee, O destroying mountain, saith the LORD, which destroyest all the earth: and I will stretch out mine hand upon thee, and roll thee down from the rocks, and will make thee a burnt mountain.
“Behold, I am against you, O destroying mountain, you who
devastate the whole earth, declares the LORD. I will stretch out My hand against you; I will roll you over the cliffs and turn you into a
charred mountain.
The mighty men of Babylon have forborn to fight, they have remained in their holds: their might hath failed; they became as women: they have burned her dwellingplaces; her bars are broken.
The warriors of Babylon have stopped fighting; they sit in their strongholds. Their strength is exhausted; they have become like women. Babylon’s homes have been set
ablaze, the bars of her gates are broken.
And that the passages are stopped, and the reeds they have
burned with fire, and the men of war are
affrighted.
The fords have been seized, the marshes set on fire, and the soldiers are
terrified.”
Thus saith the LORD of hosts; The broad walls of Babylon shall be utterly broken, and her high gates shall be
burned with fire; and the people shall labour in vain, and the
folk in the fire, and they shall be
weary.
This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Babylon’s thick walls will be leveled, and her high gates consumed by fire. So the labor of the people will be for nothing; the nations will
exhaust themselves to fuel the flames.”
And burned the house of the LORD, and the king’s house; and all the houses of Jerusalem, and all the houses of the great men, burned he with fire:
He
burned down the house of the LORD, the royal palace, and all the houses of Jerusalem—every
significant building.
He hath cut off in his fierce anger all the horn of Israel: he hath drawn back his right hand from before the enemy, and he burned against Jacob like a flaming fire, which devoureth round about.
In fierce anger He has cut off every horn of Israel and withdrawn His right hand at the approach of the enemy. He has burned in Jacob like a flaming fire that consumes everything around it.
Thy prophets have seen vain and
foolish things for thee: and they have not discovered thine iniquity, to turn away thy captivity; but have seen for thee false
burdens and causes of
banishment.
The visions of your prophets were empty and
deceptive; they did not
expose your guilt to ward off your captivity. The
burdens they envisioned for you were empty and misleading.
He putteth his mouth in the dust; if so be there may be hope.
Let him
bury his face in the dust— perhaps there is still hope.
And their feet were straight feet; and the sole of their feet was like the sole of a
calf’s foot: and they
sparkled like the colour of
burnished brass.
Their legs were straight, and the soles of their feet were like the
hooves of a
calf,
gleaming like polished bronze.
As for the likeness of the living creatures, their appearance was like
burning coals of fire, and like the appearance of lamps: it went up and down among the living creatures; and the fire was bright, and out of the fire went forth
lightning.
In the midst of the living creatures was the appearance of
glowing coals of fire, or of torches. Fire moved back and forth between the living creatures; it was bright, and
lightning flashed out of it.
Thou shalt
burn with fire a third part in the midst of the city, when the days of the siege are fulfilled: and thou shalt take a third part, and
smite about it with a knife: and a third part thou shalt
scatter in the wind; and I will draw out a sword after them.
When the days of the siege have ended, you are to
burn up a third of the hair inside the city; you are also to take a third and
slash it with the sword all around the city; and you are to
scatter a third to the wind. For I will
unleash a sword behind them.
Then take of them again, and cast them into the midst of the fire, and burn them in the fire; for thereof shall a fire come forth into all the house of Israel.
Again, take a few of these, throw them into the fire, and burn them. From there a fire will spread to the whole house of Israel.
And he spake unto the man clothed with linen, and said, Go in between the wheels, even under the
cherub, and fill thine hand with coals of fire from between the cherubims, and
scatter them over the city. And he went in in my sight.
And the LORD said to the man clothed in linen, “Go inside the
wheelwork beneath the
cherubim. Fill your hands with
burning coals from among the
cherubim and
scatter them over the city.” And as I watched, he went in.
Say thou unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; This burden concerneth the prince in Jerusalem, and all the house of Israel that are among them.
Tell them that this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘This burden concerns the prince in Jerusalem and all the house of Israel who are there.’
Say unto them which
daub it with untempered
morter, that it shall fall: there shall be an overflowing shower; and ye, O great hailstones, shall fall; and a
stormy wind shall
rend it.
Behold, it is cast into the fire for fuel; the fire devoureth both the ends of it, and the midst of it is burned. Is it meet for any work?
No, it is cast into the fire for fuel. The fire devours both ends, and the middle is
charred. Can it be useful for anything?
Behold, when it was whole, it was meet for no work: how much less shall it be meet yet for any work, when the fire hath
devoured it, and it is
burned?
Even when it was whole, it could not be made useful. How much less can it ever be useful when the fire has consumed it and
charred it!
And they shall
burn thine houses with fire, and
execute judgments upon thee in the sight of many women: and I will cause thee to cease from playing the
harlot, and thou also shalt give no
hire any more.
Then they will
burn down your houses and
execute judgment against you in the sight of many women. I will put an end to your
prostitution, and you will never again pay your lovers.
And say to the forest of the south, Hear the word of the LORD; Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will
kindle a fire in thee, and it shall
devour every green tree in thee, and every dry tree: the flaming flame shall not be
quenched, and all faces from the south to the north shall be
burned therein.
Say to the forest of the Negev: Hear the word of the LORD! This is what the Lord GOD says: I am about to
ignite in you a fire, and it will
devour all your trees, both green and dry. The
blazing flame will not be
quenched, and by it every face from south to north will be
scorched.
And the company shall stone them with stones, and
dispatch them with their swords; they shall
slay their sons and their daughters, and
burn up their houses with fire.
The
mob will stone them and cut them down with their swords. They will kill their sons and daughters and
burn down their houses.
Take the choice of the flock, and
burn also the bones under it, and make it
boil well, and let them
seethe the bones of it therein.
Take the choicest of the flock and pile the fuel beneath it. Bring it to a
boil and
cook the bones in it.’
Pile on the logs and
kindle the fire;
cook the meat well and
mix in the spices; let the bones be
burned.
Then set it empty upon the coals thereof, that the brass of it may be hot, and may
burn, and that the
filthiness of it may be
molten in it, that the
scum of it may be consumed.
Set the empty pot on its coals until it becomes hot and its copper glows. Then its impurity will
melt within; its
rust will be consumed.
And I will leave thee thrown into the wilderness, thee and all the fish of thy rivers: thou shalt fall upon the open fields; thou shalt not be brought together, nor gathered: I have given thee for meat to the beasts of the field and to the fowls of the heaven.
I will leave you in the desert, you and all the fish of your streams. You will fall on the open field and will not be taken away or gathered for burial. I have given you as food to the beasts of the earth and the birds of the air.
Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Surely in the fire of my jealousy have I spoken against the residue of the heathen, and against all
Idumea, which have appointed my land into their possession with the joy of all their heart, with
despiteful minds, to cast it out for a prey.
Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: Surely in My
burning zeal I have spoken against the rest of the nations, and against all
Edom, who took My land as their own possession with wholehearted joy and utter contempt, so that its pastureland became
plunder.
Prophesy therefore concerning the land of Israel, and say unto the mountains, and to the hills, to the rivers, and to the valleys, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I have spoken in my jealousy and in my
fury, because ye have borne the shame of the heathen:
Therefore,
prophesy concerning the land of Israel and tell the mountains and hills, the ravines and valleys, that this is what the Lord GOD says: Behold, I have spoken in My
burning zeal because you have
endured the reproach of the nations.
And they that dwell in the cities of Israel shall go forth, and shall set on fire and burn the weapons, both the shields and the bucklers, the bows and the arrows, and the handstaves, and the spears, and they shall burn them with fire seven years:
Then those who dwell in the cities of Israel will go out,
kindle fires, and
burn up the weapons—the bucklers and shields, the bows and arrows, the clubs and spears. For seven years they will use them for fuel.
So that they shall take no wood out of the field, neither cut down any out of the forests; for they shall
burn the weapons with fire: and they shall
spoil those that
spoiled them, and
rob those that
robbed them, saith the Lord GOD.
They will not gather wood from the
countryside or cut it from the forests, for they will use the weapons for fuel. They will
loot those who
looted them and
plunder those who
plundered them, declares the Lord GOD.
And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will give unto
Gog a place there of graves in Israel, the valley of the passengers on the east of the sea: and it shall stop the noses of the passengers: and there shall they
bury Gog and all his multitude: and they shall call it The valley of
Hamon-
gog.
And on that day I will give
Gog a
burial place in Israel, the Valley of the Travelers, east of the Sea. It will block those who travel through, because
Gog and all his hordes will be
buried there. So it will be called the Valley of
Hamon-
gog.
And seven months shall the house of Israel be
burying of them, that they may
cleanse the land.
For seven months the house of Israel will be
burying them in order to
cleanse the land.
Yea, all the people of the land shall
bury them; and it shall be to them a
renown the day that I shall be
glorified, saith the Lord GOD.
All the people of the land will
bury them, and it will bring them
renown on the day I display My glory, declares the Lord GOD.
And they shall
sever out men of continual employment, passing through the land to
bury with the passengers those that remain upon the face of the earth, to
cleanse it: after the end of seven months shall they search.
And men will be employed to continually pass through the land to
cleanse it by
burying the invaders who remain on the ground. At the end of the seven months they will begin their search.
And the passengers that pass through the land, when any
seeth a man’s bone, then shall he set up a sign by it, till the
buriers have
buried it in the valley of
Hamon-
gog.
As they pass through the land,
anyone who sees a human bone will set up a
pillar next to it, until the gravediggers have
buried it in the Valley of
Hamon-
gog.
And the chambers and the
entries thereof were by the posts of the gates, where they washed the
burnt offering.
There was a chamber with a
doorway by the
portico in each of the inner gateways. There the
burnt offering was to be washed.
And in the
porch of the gate were two tables on this side, and two tables on that side, to
slay thereon the
burnt offering and the sin offering and the
trespass offering.
Inside the
portico of the
gateway were two tables on each side, on which the
burnt offerings, sin offerings, and guilt offerings were to be slaughtered.
And the four tables were of
hewn stone for the
burnt offering, of a
cubit and an half long, and a
cubit and an half broad, and one
cubit high:
whereupon also they laid the instruments
wherewith they
slew the
burnt offering and the sacrifice.
There were also four tables of dressed stone for the
burnt offering, each a
cubit and a half long, a
cubit and a half wide, and a
cubit high. On these were placed the utensils used to slaughter the
burnt offerings and the other sacrifices.
And he said unto me, Son of man, thus saith the Lord GOD; These are the ordinances of the altar in the day when they shall make it, to offer
burnt offerings
thereon, and to
sprinkle blood
thereon.
Then He said to me: “Son of man, this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘These are the statutes for the altar on the day it is constructed, so that
burnt offerings may be sacrificed on it and blood may be
sprinkled on it:
Thou shalt take the
bullock also of the sin offering, and he shall
burn it in the appointed place of the house, without the sanctuary.
Then you are to take away the bull for the sin offering and burn it in the appointed part of the temple area outside the sanctuary.
And thou shalt offer them before the LORD, and the priests shall cast salt upon them, and they shall offer them up for a burnt offering unto the LORD.
You must present them before the LORD; the priests are to
sprinkle salt on them and sacrifice them as a
burnt offering to the LORD.
And when these days are
expired, it shall be, that upon the eighth day, and so forward, the priests shall make your
burnt offerings upon the altar, and your peace offerings; and I will accept you, saith the Lord GOD.
At the end of these days, from the eighth day on, the priests are to present your burnt offerings and peace offerings on the altar. Then I will accept you, declares the Lord GOD.’”
Yet they shall be ministers in my sanctuary, having charge at the gates of the house, and ministering to the house: they shall
slay the
burnt offering and the sacrifice for the people, and they shall stand before them to minister unto them.
Yet they shall be ministers in My sanctuary, having charge of the gates of the temple and ministering there. They shall slaughter the burnt offerings and other sacrifices for the people and stand before them to minister to them.
And one lamb out of the flock, out of two hundred, out of the fat pastures of Israel; for a meat offering, and for a
burnt offering, and for peace offerings, to make
reconciliation for them, saith the Lord GOD.
And one sheep shall be given from each flock of two hundred from the well-watered pastures of Israel. These are for the grain offerings,
burnt offerings, and peace offerings, to make
atonement for the people, declares the Lord GOD.
And it shall be the prince’s part to give
burnt offerings, and meat offerings, and drink offerings, in the feasts, and in the new moons, and in the sabbaths, in all
solemnities of the house of Israel: he shall prepare the sin offering, and the meat offering, and the
burnt offering, and the peace offerings, to make
reconciliation for the house of Israel.
And it shall be the prince’s part to provide the
burnt offerings, grain offerings, and drink offerings for the feasts, New Moons, and Sabbaths—for all the appointed feasts of the house of Israel. He will provide the sin offerings, grain offerings,
burnt offerings, and peace offerings to make
atonement for the house of Israel.
And seven days of the feast he shall prepare a
burnt offering to the LORD, seven bullocks and seven rams without
blemish daily the seven days; and a
kid of the goats daily for a sin offering.
Each day during the seven days of the feast, he shall provide seven bulls and seven rams without
blemish as a
burnt offering to the LORD, along with a male goat for a sin offering.
In the seventh month, in the
fifteenth day of the month, shall he do the like in the feast of the seven days, according to the sin offering, according to the
burnt offering, and according to the meat offering, and according to the oil.
During the seven days of the feast that begins on the
fifteenth day of the seventh month, he is to make the same provision for sin offerings,
burnt offerings, grain offerings, and oil.’
And the prince shall enter by the way of the
porch of that gate without, and shall stand by the post of the gate, and the priests shall prepare his
burnt offering and his peace offerings, and he shall worship at the
threshold of the gate: then he shall go forth; but the gate shall not be shut until the evening.
The prince is to enter from the outside through the
portico of the
gateway and stand by the
gatepost, while the priests sacrifice his
burnt offerings and peace offerings. He is to bow in worship at the
threshold of the gate and then depart, but the gate must not be shut until evening.
And the
burnt offering that the prince shall offer unto the LORD in the sabbath day shall be six lambs without
blemish, and a ram without
blemish.
The
burnt offering that the prince presents to the LORD on the Sabbath day shall be six
unblemished male lambs and an
unblemished ram.
Now when the prince shall prepare a voluntary
burnt offering or peace offerings
voluntarily unto the LORD, one shall then open him the gate that looketh toward the east, and he shall prepare his
burnt offering and his peace offerings, as he did on the sabbath day: then he shall go forth; and after his going forth one shall shut the gate.
When the prince makes a
freewill offering to the LORD, whether a
burnt offering or a peace offering, the gate facing east must be opened for him. He is to offer his
burnt offering or peace offering just as he does on the Sabbath day. Then he shall go out, and the gate must be closed after he goes out.
Thou shalt daily prepare a
burnt offering unto the LORD of a lamb of the first year without
blemish: thou shalt prepare it every morning.
And you shall provide an
unblemished year-old lamb as a daily
burnt offering to the LORD; you are to offer it every morning.
Thus shall they prepare the lamb, and the meat offering, and the oil, every morning for a continual burnt offering.
Thus they shall provide the lamb, the grain offering, and the oil every morning as a regular burnt offering.’
And
whoso falleth not down and worshippeth shall the same hour be cast into the midst of a
burning fiery furnace.
And
whoever does not fall down and worship will immediately be thrown into the
blazing fiery furnace.”
And
whoso falleth not down and worshippeth, that he should be cast into the midst of a
burning fiery furnace.
Now if ye be ready that at what time ye hear the sound of the
cornet,
flute,
harp,
sackbut,
psaltery, and
dulcimer, and all kinds of musick, ye fall down and worship the image which I have made; well: but if ye worship not, ye shall be cast the same hour into the midst of a
burning fiery furnace; and who is that God that shall deliver you out of my hands?
Now, if you are ready, as soon as you hear the sound of the horn,
flute,
zither,
lyre,
harp, pipes, and all kinds of music, you must fall down and worship the statue I have made. But if you refuse to worship, you will be thrown at once into the
blazing fiery furnace. Then what god will be able to deliver you from my hands?”
If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the
burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king.
If the God whom we serve exists, then He is able to deliver us from the
blazing fiery furnace and from your hand, O king.
And he commanded the most mighty men that were in his army to bind
Shadrach, Meshach, and
Abed-nego, and to cast them into the
burning fiery furnace.
Then these men were bound in their coats, their
hosen, and their hats, and their other garments, and were cast into the midst of the
burning fiery furnace.
So they were
tied up, wearing robes,
trousers, turbans, and other clothes, and they were thrown into the
blazing fiery furnace.
And these three men,
Shadrach, Meshach, and
Abed-nego, fell down bound into the midst of the
burning fiery furnace.
Then
Nebuchadnezzar came near to the mouth of the
burning fiery furnace, and spake, and said,
Shadrach, Meshach, and
Abed-nego, ye servants of the most high God, come forth, and come
hither. Then
Shadrach, Meshach, and
Abed-nego, came forth of the midst of the fire.
I
beheld till the thrones were cast down, and the Ancient of days did sit, whose garment was white as snow, and the hair of his head like the pure wool: his throne was like the
fiery flame, and his wheels as
burning fire.
As I continued to watch, thrones were set in place, and the Ancient of Days took His seat. His clothing was white as snow, and the hair of His head was like pure wool. His throne was flaming with fire, and its wheels were all
ablaze.
I
beheld then because of the voice of the great words which the horn spake: I
beheld even till the beast was slain, and his body destroyed, and given to the
burning flame.
Then I kept watching because of the
arrogant words the horn was speaking. As I continued to watch, the beast was slain, and its body was destroyed and thrown into the
blazing fire.
And I will visit upon her the days of
Baalim, wherein she
burned incense to them, and she decked herself with her earrings and her jewels, and she went after her lovers, and
forgat me, saith the LORD.
I will
punish her for the days of the Baals when she
burned incense to them, when she decked herself with rings and
jewelry, and went after her lovers. But Me she
forgot,” declares the LORD.
They sacrifice upon the tops of the mountains, and
burn incense upon the hills, under oaks and poplars and elms, because the shadow thereof is good: therefore your daughters shall commit
whoredom, and your spouses shall commit
adultery.
They sacrifice on the mountaintops and
burn offerings on the hills, under oak,
poplar, and
terebinth, because their shade is pleasant. And so your daughters turn to
prostitution and your daughters-in-law to
adultery.
For I desired mercy, and not sacrifice; and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings.
For I desire mercy, not sacrifice, and the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.
For they have made ready their heart like an
oven, whiles they lie in wait: their
baker sleepeth all the night; in the morning it
burneth as a flaming fire.
For they prepare their heart like an
oven while they lie in wait; all night their anger smolders; in the morning it blazes like a flaming fire.
Thy
calf, O Samaria, hath cast thee off; mine anger is
kindled against them: how long will it be
ere they attain to
innocency?
He has rejected your
calf, O Samaria. My anger
burns against them. How long will they be incapable of
innocence?
Yea, though they have
hired among the nations, now will I gather them, and they shall sorrow a little for the
burden of the king of princes.
Though they
hire allies among the nations, I will now round them up, and they will begin to diminish under the oppression of the king of princes.
For, lo, they are gone because of destruction: Egypt shall gather them up,
Memphis shall
bury them: the pleasant places for their silver,
nettles shall possess them: thorns shall be in their tabernacles.
For even if they
flee destruction, Egypt will gather them and
Memphis will
bury them. Their precious silver will be taken over by thistles, and thorns will overrun their tents.
As they called them, so they went from them: they sacrificed unto
Baalim, and
burned incense to
graven images.
But the more I called Israel, the farther they departed from Me. They sacrificed to the Baals and burned incense to carved images.
O LORD, to thee will I cry: for the fire hath
devoured the pastures of the wilderness, and the flame hath
burned all the trees of the field.
To You, O LORD, I call, for fire has consumed the open pastures and flames have
scorched all the trees of the field.
A fire devoureth before them; and behind them a flame
burneth: the land is as the garden of
Eden before them, and behind them a
desolate wilderness;
yea, and nothing shall escape them.
Before them a fire devours, and behind them a flame scorches. The land before them is like the Garden of
Eden, but behind them, it is like a desert wasteland— surely nothing will escape them.
Neither shall one thrust another; they shall walk every one in his path: and when they fall upon the sword, they shall not be wounded.
They do not
jostle one another; each proceeds in his path. They
burst through the defenses, never breaking ranks.
Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of Moab, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because he
burned the bones of the king of
Edom into lime:
This is what the LORD says: “For three transgressions of Moab, even four, I will not
revoke My judgment, because he
burned to lime the bones of
Edom’s king.
I have overthrown some of you, as God overthrew
Sodom and
Gomorrah, and ye were as a
firebrand plucked out of the
burning: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the LORD.
Forasmuch therefore as your
treading is upon the poor, and ye take from him
burdens of wheat: ye have built houses of
hewn stone, but ye shall not dwell in them; ye have planted pleasant vineyards, but ye shall not drink wine of them.
Therefore, because you
trample on the poor and exact from him a tax of grain, you will never live in the stone houses you have built; you will never drink the wine from the
lush vineyards you have planted.
Though ye offer me burnt offerings and your meat offerings, I will not accept them: neither will I regard the peace offerings of your fat beasts.
Even though you offer Me
burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them; for your peace offerings of
fattened cattle I will have no regard.
And a man’s uncle shall take him up, and he that burneth him, to bring out the bones out of the house, and shall say unto him that is by the sides of the house, Is there yet any with thee? and he shall say, No. Then shall he say, Hold thy tongue: for we may not make mention of the name of the LORD.
And when the relative who is to
burn the bodies picks them up to remove them from the house, he will call to one inside, “Is
anyone else with you?” “None,” that person will answer. “Silence,” the relative will
retort, “for the name of the LORD must not be
invoked.”
And the house of Jacob shall be a fire, and the house of Joseph a flame, and the house of
Esau for
stubble, and they shall
kindle in them, and
devour them; and there shall not be any remaining of the house of
Esau; for the LORD hath spoken it.
Then the house of Jacob will be a
blazing fire, and the house of Joseph a
burning flame; but the house of
Esau will be
stubble— Jacob will set it
ablaze and
consume it. Therefore no
survivor will remain from the house of
Esau.” For the LORD has spoken.
And all the
graven images thereof shall be beaten to pieces, and all the
hires thereof shall be
burned with the fire, and all the idols thereof will I lay
desolate: for she gathered it of the
hire of an
harlot, and they shall return to the
hire of an
harlot.
All her carved images will be
smashed to pieces; all her wages will be
burned in the fire, and I will destroy all her idols. Since she collected the wages of a
prostitute, they will be used again on a
prostitute.
Wherewith shall I come before the LORD, and bow myself before the high God? shall I come before him with
burnt offerings, with
calves of a year old?
With what shall I come before the LORD when I bow before the God on high? Should I come to Him with
burnt offerings, with year-old
calves?
The
burden of
Nineveh. The book of the vision of
Nahum the Elkoshite.
This is the
burden against
Nineveh, the book of the vision of
Nahum the Elkoshite:
The mountains
quake at him, and the hills
melt, and the earth is
burned at his presence,
yea, the world, and all that dwell therein.
The mountains
quake before Him, and the hills
melt away; the earth trembles at His presence— the world and all its dwellers.
Who can stand before his
indignation? and who can
abide in the fierceness of his anger? his
fury is poured out like fire, and the rocks are thrown down by him.
For now will I break his yoke from off thee, and will
burst thy bonds in
sunder.
For I will now break their yoke from your neck and
tear away your
shackles.”
Behold, I am against thee, saith the LORD of hosts, and I will
burn her
chariots in the smoke, and the sword shall
devour thy young lions: and I will cut off thy prey from the earth, and the voice of thy messengers shall no more be heard.
“Behold, I am against you,” declares the LORD of Hosts. “I will send your
chariots up in smoke, and the sword will
devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voices of your messengers will no longer be heard.”
The
burden which
Habakkuk the prophet did see.
This is the
burden that
Habakkuk the prophet received in a vision:
Therefore they sacrifice unto their net, and
burn incense unto their
drag; because by them their portion is fat, and their meat
plenteous.
Therefore he sacrifices to his
dragnet and
burns incense to his fishing net, for by these things his portion is
sumptuous and his food is rich.
Before him went the
pestilence, and
burning coals went forth at his feet.
Plague went before Him, and fever followed in His steps.
Before the decree bring forth, before the day pass as the
chaff, before the fierce anger of the LORD come upon you, before the day of the LORD’S anger come upon you.
before the decree takes effect and the day passes like
chaff, before the
burning anger of the LORD comes upon you, before the Day of the LORD’s anger comes upon you.
Therefore wait ye upon me, saith the LORD, until the day that I rise up to the prey: for my determination is to gather the nations, that I may
assemble the kingdoms, to pour upon them mine
indignation, even all my fierce anger: for all the earth shall be
devoured with the fire of my jealousy.
Therefore wait for Me,” declares the LORD, “until the day I rise to
testify. For My decision is to gather nations, to
assemble kingdoms, to pour out upon them My
indignation— all My
burning anger. For all the earth will be consumed by the fire of My jealousy.
