And the name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his wife
Naomi, and the name of his two sons Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites of Bethlehemjudah. And they came into the country of Moab, and continued there.
The man’s name was Elimelech, his wife’s name was
Naomi, and the names of his two sons were Mahlon and Chilion. They were Ephrathites
from Bethlehem in Judah, and they entered the land of Moab and settled there.
Then she arose with her daughters in law, that she might return from the country of Moab: for she had heard in the country of Moab how that the LORD had visited his people in giving them bread.
When
Naomi heard in Moab that the LORD had attended to His people by providing them with food, she and her daughters-in-law prepared to leave the land of Moab.
Would ye
tarry for them till they were grown? would ye stay for them
from having husbands?
nay, my daughters; for it grieveth me much for your sakes that the hand of the LORD is gone out against me.
would you wait for them to grow up? Would you
refrain from having husbands? No, my daughters, it grieves me very much for your sakes that the hand of the LORD has gone out against me.”
And
Ruth said, Intreat me not to leave thee, or to return
from following after thee: for
whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will
lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God:
But
Ruth replied: “Do not
urge me to leave you or to turn
from following you. For wherever you go, I will go, and wherever you live, I will live; your people will be my people, and your God will be my God.
So
Naomi returned, and
Ruth the
Moabitess, her daughter in law, with her, which returned out of the country of Moab: and they came to
Bethlehem in the beginning of barley harvest.
So
Naomi returned
from the land of Moab with her daughter-in-law
Ruth the
Moabitess. And they arrived in
Bethlehem at the beginning of the barley harvest.
And
Naomi had a
kinsman of her husband’s, a mighty man of wealth, of the family of Elimelech; and his name was Boaz.
Now
Naomi had a relative on her husband’s side, a prominent man of noble character
from the clan of Elimelech, whose name was Boaz.
And she went, and came, and
gleaned in the field after the reapers: and her
hap was to light on a part of the field belonging unto Boaz, who was of the kindred of Elimelech.
So
Ruth departed and went out into the field and
gleaned after the harvesters. And she happened to come to the part of the field belonging to Boaz, who was
from the clan of Elimelech.
And behold, Boaz came
from Bethlehem, and said unto the reapers, The LORD be with you. And they answered him, The LORD
bless thee.
Just then Boaz arrived
from Bethlehem and said to the harvesters, “The LORD be with you.” “The LORD
bless you,” they replied.
And the servant that was set over the reapers answered and said, It is the
Moabitish damsel that came back with
Naomi out of the country of Moab:
And she said, I pray you, let me
glean and gather after the reapers among the
sheaves: so she came, and hath continued even
from the morning until now, that she
tarried a little in the house.
She has said, ‘Please let me
glean and gather among the
sheaves after the harvesters.’ So she came out and has continued
from morning until now, except that she rested a short time in the shelter.”
Then said Boaz unto
Ruth, Hearest thou not, my daughter? Go not to
glean in another field, neither go
from hence, but
abide here fast by my maidens:
Then Boaz said to
Ruth, “
Listen, my daughter. Do not go and
glean in another field, and do not go away
from this place, but stay here close to my servant girls.
Let thine eyes be on the field that they do
reap, and go thou after them: have I not charged the young men that they shall not touch thee? and when thou art
athirst, go unto the vessels, and drink of that which the young men have drawn.
Let your eyes be on the field they are harvesting, and follow along after these girls. Indeed, I have ordered the young men not to touch you. And when you are
thirsty, go and drink
from the jars the young men have filled.”
The LORD
recompense thy work, and a full reward be given thee of the LORD God of Israel, under whose wings thou art come to trust.
May the LORD repay your work, and may you receive a rich reward from the LORD, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have taken refuge.”
And let fall also some of the handfuls of purpose for her, and leave them, that she may
glean them, and
rebuke her not.
Rather, pull out for her some stalks
from the bundles and leave them for her to gather. Do not
rebuke her.”
And she took it up, and went into the city: and her mother in law saw what she had
gleaned: and she brought forth, and gave to her that she had reserved after she was sufficed.
She
picked up the grain and went into the town, where her mother-in-law saw what she had
gleaned. And she brought out what she had saved
from her meal and gave it to
Naomi.
And
Naomi said unto her daughter in law, Blessed be he of the LORD, who hath not left off his kindness to the living and to the dead. And
Naomi said unto her, The man is near of
kin unto us, one of our next
kinsmen.
Then
Naomi said to her daughter-in-law, “May he be blessed by the LORD, who has not withdrawn His kindness
from the living or the dead.”
Naomi continued, “The man is a close relative. He is one of our
kinsman-redeemers.”
And he said unto the
kinsman,
Naomi, that is come again out of the country of Moab, selleth a
parcel of land, which was our brother Elimelech’s:
And he said to the
kinsman-
redeemer, “
Naomi, who has returned
from the land of Moab, is selling the piece of land that belonged to our brother Elimelech.
Then said Boaz, What day thou buyest the field of the hand of
Naomi, thou must
buy it also of
Ruth the
Moabitess, the wife of the dead, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance.
Then Boaz said, “On the day you
buy the land
from Naomi and also
from Ruth the
Moabitess, you must also acquire the widow of the deceased in order to raise up the name of the deceased on his inheritance.”
And Boaz said unto the elders, and unto all the people, Ye are witnesses this day, that I have bought all that was Elimelech’s, and all that was Chilion’s and Mahlon’s, of the hand of
Naomi.
At this, Boaz said to the elders and all the people, “You are witnesses
today that I am
buying from Naomi all that belonged to Elimelech, Chilion, and Mahlon.
Moreover
Ruth the
Moabitess, the wife of Mahlon, have I purchased to be my wife, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance, that the name of the dead be not cut off
from among his brethren, and
from the gate of his place: ye are witnesses this day.
Moreover, I have acquired
Ruth the
Moabitess, Mahlon’s widow, as my wife, to raise up the name of the deceased through his inheritance, so that his name will not disappear
from among his brothers or
from the gate of his home. You are witnesses
today.”
Now there was a certain man of Ramathaim-zophim, of mount Ephraim, and his name was Elkanah, the son of Jeroham, the son of
Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephrathite:
Now there was a man named Elkanah who was
from Ramathaim-zophim in the hill country of Ephraim. He was the son of Jeroham, the son of
Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite.
And this man went up out of his city yearly to worship and to sacrifice unto the LORD of hosts in
Shiloh. And the two sons of
Eli,
Hophni and
Phinehas, the priests of the LORD, were there.
Year after year Elkanah would go up
from his city to worship and sacrifice to the LORD of Hosts at
Shiloh, where
Eli’s two sons,
Hophni and
Phinehas, were priests to the LORD.
And
Eli said unto her, How long
wilt thou be
drunken? put away thy wine
from thee.
and said to her, “How long will you be
drunk? Put away your wine!”
Wherefore it came to pass, when the time was come about after
Hannah had conceived, that she bare a son, and called his name Samuel, saying, Because I have asked him of the LORD.
So in the course of time,
Hannah conceived and gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel, saying, “Because I have asked for him
from the LORD.”
Talk no more so exceeding proudly; let not
arrogancy come out of your mouth: for the LORD is a God of knowledge, and by him actions are
weighed.
Do not
boast so proudly, or let
arrogance come
from your mouth, for the LORD is a God who knows, and by Him actions are
weighed.
He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth up the
beggar from the
dunghill, to set them among princes, and to make them
inherit the throne of glory: for the pillars of the earth are the LORD’S, and he hath set the world upon them.
He raises the poor
from the dust and lifts the
needy from the ash
heap. He seats them among princes and bestows on them a throne of honor. For the foundations of the earth are the LORD’s, and upon them He has set the world.
The
adversaries of the LORD shall be broken to pieces; out of heaven shall he
thunder upon them: the LORD shall judge the ends of the earth; and he shall give strength unto his king, and
exalt the horn of his
anointed.
Those who
oppose the LORD will be
shattered. He will
thunder from heaven against them. The LORD will judge the ends of the earth and will give power to His king. He will
exalt the horn of His
anointed.”
Also before they burnt the fat, the priest’s servant came, and said to the man that sacrificed, Give flesh to
roast for the priest; for he will not have
sodden flesh of thee, but raw.
Even before the fat was burned, the servant of the priest would come and say to the man who was sacrificing, “Give the priest some meat to
roast, because he will not accept boiled meat
from you, but only raw.”
Moreover his mother made him a little coat, and brought it to him from year to year, when she came up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice.
Each year his mother would make him a little
robe and bring it to him when she went with her husband to offer the annual sacrifice.
And he said unto them, Why do ye such things? for I hear of your evil dealings by all this people.
“Why are you doing these things?”
Eli said to his sons. “I hear about your wicked deeds
from all these people.
Wherefore the LORD God of Israel saith, I said indeed that thy house, and the house of thy father, should walk before me for ever: but now the LORD saith, Be it far
from me; for them that honour me I will honour, and they that
despise me shall be lightly esteemed.
Therefore, the LORD, the God of Israel, declares: ‘I did indeed say that your house and the house of your father would walk before Me
forever. But now the LORD declares: Far be it
from Me! For I will honor those who honor Me, but those who
despise Me will be
disdained.
And the man of thine, whom I shall not cut off
from mine altar, shall be to
consume thine eyes, and to
grieve thine heart: and all the increase of thine house shall die in the flower of their age.
And every one of you that I do not cut off
from My altar, your eyes will fail and your heart will
grieve. All your descendants will die by the sword of men.
In that day I will perform against
Eli all things which I have spoken concerning his house: when I begin, I will also make an end.
On that day I will carry out against
Eli everything I have spoken about his family,
from beginning to end.
And he said, What is the thing that the LORD hath said unto thee? I pray thee hide it not from me: God do so to thee, and more also, if thou hide any thing from me of all the things that he said unto thee.
“What was the message He gave you?”
Eli asked. “Do not hide it
from me. May God
punish you, and ever so severely, if you hide
from me anything He said to you.”
And Samuel told him every
whit, and
hid nothing
from him. And he said, It is the LORD: let him do what seemeth him good.
So Samuel told him everything and did not hide a thing
from him. “He is the LORD,” replied
Eli. “Let Him do what is good in His eyes.”
And all Israel
from Dan even to Beer-
sheba knew that Samuel was established to be a prophet of the LORD.
So all Israel
from Dan to
Beersheba knew that Samuel was confirmed as a prophet of the LORD.
And when the people were come into the camp, the elders of Israel said, Wherefore hath the LORD
smitten us to day before the Philistines? Let us
fetch the ark of the covenant of the LORD out of
Shiloh unto us, that, when it cometh among us, it may save us out of the hand of our enemies.
When the troops returned to the camp, the elders of Israel asked, “Why has the LORD brought defeat on us before the Philistines
today? Let us bring the ark of the covenant of the LORD
from Shiloh, so that it may go with us to save us
from the hand of our enemies.”
So the people sent to
Shiloh, that they might bring
from thence the ark of the covenant of the LORD of hosts, which dwelleth between the cherubims: and the two sons of
Eli,
Hophni and
Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.
So the people sent men to
Shiloh, and they brought back the ark of the covenant of the LORD of Hosts, who sits enthroned between the
cherubim. And the two sons of
Eli,
Hophni and
Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.
Woe unto us! who shall deliver us out of the hand of these mighty Gods? these are the Gods that
smote the Egyptians with all the plagues in the wilderness.
Woe to us! Who will deliver us
from the hand of these mighty gods? These are the gods who struck the Egyptians with all kinds of plagues in the wilderness.
And there ran a man of Benjamin out of the army, and came to
Shiloh the same day with his clothes rent, and with earth upon his head.
That same day a
Benjamite ran
from the battle line all the way to
Shiloh, with his clothes
torn and
dirt on his head.
And the man said unto
Eli, I am he that came out of the army, and I fled to day out of the army. And he said, What is there done, my son?
“I have just come
from the battle,” the man said to
Eli. “I fled
from there
today.” “What happened, my son?”
Eli asked.
And it came to pass, when he made mention of the ark of God, that he fell
from off the seat backward by the side of the gate, and his neck
brake, and he died: for he was an old man, and heavy. And he had judged Israel forty years.
As soon as the ark of God was mentioned,
Eli fell backward
from his chair by the city gate, and being old and heavy, he broke his neck and died. And
Eli had judged Israel forty years.
And she named the child I-chabod, saying, The glory is departed from Israel: because the ark of God was taken, and because of her father in law and her husband.
And she named the boy Ichabod, saying, “The glory has departed from Israel,” because the ark of God had been captured and her father-in-law and her husband had been killed.
And she said, The glory is departed from Israel: for the ark of God is taken.
“The glory has departed from Israel,” she said, “for the ark of God has been captured.”
And the Philistines took the ark of God, and brought it
from Eben-ezer unto
Ashdod.
After the Philistines had captured the ark of God, they took it
from Ebenezer to
Ashdod,
And they said, If ye send away the ark of the God of Israel, send it not empty; but in any wise return him a
trespass offering: then ye shall be
healed, and it shall be known to you why his hand is not removed
from you.
They replied, “If you return the ark of the God of Israel, do not send it away empty, but by all means return it to Him with a guilt offering. Then you will be
healed, and you will understand why His hand has not been lifted
from you.”
Wherefore ye shall make images of your
emerods, and images of your
mice that
mar the land; and ye shall give glory unto the God of Israel:
peradventure he will
lighten his hand
from off you, and
from off your gods, and
from off your land.
Make images of your tumors and of the rats that are
ravaging the land. Give glory to the God of Israel, and perhaps He will lift His hand
from you and your gods and your land.
Now therefore make a new
cart, and take two
milch kine, on which there hath come no yoke, and
tie the
kine to the
cart, and bring their
calves home
from them:
Now, therefore, prepare one new
cart with two milk cows that have never been yoked.
Hitch the cows to the
cart, but take their
calves away and pen them up.
And the men of Beth-shemesh said, Who is able to stand before this holy LORD God? and to whom shall he go up from us?
The men of Beth-shemesh asked, “Who can stand in the presence of the LORD, this holy God? To whom should the ark go up from here?”
And it came to pass, while the ark abode in Kirjath-jearim, that the time was long; for it was twenty years: and all the house of Israel
lamented after the LORD.
And
from that day a long time passed, twenty years in all, as the ark remained at Kiriath-jearim. And all the house of Israel
mourned and sought after the LORD.
And Samuel spake unto all the house of Israel, saying, If ye do return unto the LORD with all your hearts, then put away the strange gods and
Ashtaroth from among you, and prepare your hearts unto the LORD, and serve him only: and he will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines.
Then Samuel said to all the house of Israel, “If you are returning to the LORD with all your hearts, then rid
yourselves of the foreign gods and Ashtoreths among you, prepare your hearts for the LORD, and serve Him only. And He will deliver you
from the hand of the Philistines.”
And the children of Israel said to Samuel, Cease not to cry unto the LORD our God for us, that he will save us out of the hand of the Philistines.
and said to Samuel, “Do not stop crying out to the LORD our God for us, that He may save us from the hand of the Philistines.”
And the cities which the Philistines had taken
from Israel were restored to Israel,
from Ekron even unto
Gath; and the coasts thereof did Israel deliver out of the hands of the Philistines. And there was peace between Israel and the
Amorites.
The cities
from Ekron to
Gath, which the Philistines had taken, were restored to Israel, who also delivered the surrounding territory
from the hand of the Philistines. And there was peace between the Israelites and the
Amorites.
And he went
from year to year in circuit to
Bethel, and
Gilgal, and Mizpeh, and judged Israel in all those places.
Every year he would go on a circuit
from Bethel to
Gilgal to
Mizpah, judging Israel in all these places.
According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even unto this day,
wherewith they have
forsaken me, and served other gods, so do they also unto thee.
Just as they have done
from the day I brought them up out of Egypt until this day,
forsaking Me and serving other gods, so they are doing to you.
And he said, This will be the manner of the king that shall reign over you: He will take your sons, and
appoint them for himself, for his
chariots, and to be his
horsemen; and some shall run before his
chariots.
He said, “This will be the manner of the king who will reign over you: He will take your sons and
appoint them to his own
chariots and horses, to run in
front of his
chariots.
And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king which ye shall have chosen you; and the LORD will not hear you in that day.
When that day comes, you will
beg for relief
from the king you have chosen, but the LORD will not answer you on that day.”
And he had a son, whose name was Saul, a choice young man, and a goodly: and there was not among the children of Israel a goodlier person than he: from his shoulders and upward he was higher than any of the people.
And he had a son named Saul, choice and handsome, without equal among the Israelites—a head taller than any of the people.
To
morrow about this time I will send thee a man out of the land of Benjamin, and thou shalt
anoint him to be captain over my people Israel, that he may save my people out of the hand of the Philistines: for I have looked upon my people, because their cry is come unto me.
“At this time
tomorrow I will send you a man
from the land of Benjamin, and you are to
anoint him leader over My people Israel; he will save them
from the hand of the Philistines. For I have looked upon My people, because their cry has come to Me.”
And Saul answered and said, Am not I a
Benjamite, of the smallest of the tribes of Israel? and my family the least of all the families of the tribe of Benjamin? wherefore then speakest thou so to me?
Saul replied, “Am I not a
Benjamite from the smallest tribe of Israel, and is not my clan the least of all the clans of Benjamin? So why would you say such a thing to me?”
And the
cook took up the shoulder, and that which was upon it, and set it before Saul. And Samuel said, Behold that which is left! set it before thee, and eat: for unto this time hath it been kept for thee since I said, I have invited the people. So Saul did eat with Samuel that day.
So the
cook picked up the leg and what was attached to it and set it before Saul. Then Samuel said, “Here is what was kept back. It was set apart for you. Eat, for it has been kept for you for this occasion,
from the time I said, ‘I have invited the people.’” So Saul
dined with Samuel that day.
And when they were come down from the high place into the city, Samuel communed with Saul upon the top of the house.
And after they had come down from the high place into the city, Samuel spoke with Saul on the roof of his house.
When thou art departed
from me to day, then thou shalt find two men by
Rachel’s
sepulchre in the border of Benjamin at Zelzah; and they will say unto thee, The
asses which thou wentest to seek are found: and, lo, thy father hath left the care of the
asses, and sorroweth for you, saying, What shall I do for my son?
When you leave me
today, you will find two men at
Rachel’s tomb in Zelzah on the border of Benjamin. They will say to you, ‘The
donkeys you seek have been found, and now your father has stopped
worrying about the
donkeys and started
worrying about you, asking, “What should I do about my son?”’
Then shalt thou go on forward
from thence, and thou shalt come to the plain of
Tabor, and there shall meet thee three men going up to God to
Bethel, one carrying three kids, and another carrying three
loaves of bread, and another carrying a
bottle of wine:
Then you will go on
from there until you come to the Oak of
Tabor. Three men going up to God at
Bethel will meet you there, one carrying three young goats, another carrying three
loaves of bread, and another carrying a skin of wine.
And they will
salute thee, and give thee two
loaves of bread; which thou shalt receive of their hands.
They will
greet you and give you two
loaves of bread, which you will accept
from their hands.
After that thou shalt come to the hill of God, where is the garrison of the Philistines: and it shall come to pass, when thou art come thither to the city, that thou shalt meet a company of prophets coming down
from the high place with a
psaltery, and a
tabret, and a pipe, and a
harp, before them; and they shall
prophesy:
After that you will come to Gibeah of God, where the Philistines have an outpost. As you approach the city, you will meet a group of prophets coming down
from the high place, preceded by harps, tambourines, flutes, and lyres, and they will be
prophesying.
And it was so, that when he had turned his back to go from Samuel, God gave him another heart: and all those signs came to pass that day.
As Saul turned to leave Samuel, God changed Saul’s heart, and all the signs came to pass that day.
And said unto the children of Israel, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I brought up Israel out of Egypt, and delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all kingdoms, and of them that
oppressed you:
and said to the Israelites, “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘I brought Israel up out of Egypt, and I
rescued you
from the hands of the Egyptians and of all the kingdoms that
oppressed you.’
And ye have this day rejected your God, who himself saved you out of all your
adversities and your tribulations; and ye have said unto him,
Nay, but set a king over us. Now therefore present
yourselves before the LORD by your tribes, and by your thousands.
But
today you have rejected your God, who saves you
from all your troubles and afflictions, and you have said to Him, ‘No, set a king over us.’ Now therefore present
yourselves before the LORD by your tribes and clans.”
And they ran and
fetched him thence: and when he stood among the people, he was higher than any of the people
from his shoulders and upward.
So they ran and brought Saul, and when he stood among the people, he was a head taller than any of the others.
And, behold, Saul came after the
herd out of the field; and Saul said, What aileth the people that they
weep? And they told him the
tidings of the men of
Jabesh.
Just then Saul was returning
from the field, behind his oxen. “What troubles the people?” asked Saul. “Why are they
weeping?” And they relayed to him the words of the men
from Jabesh.
And now, behold, the king walketh before you: and I am old and grayheaded; and, behold, my sons are with you: and I have walked before you
from my
childhood unto this day.
Now here is the king walking before you, and I am old and gray, and my sons are here with you. I have walked before you from my youth until this day.
Behold, here I am: witness against me before the LORD, and before his
anointed: whose ox have I taken? or whose
ass have I taken? or whom have I
defrauded? whom have I
oppressed? or of whose hand have I received any
bribe to blind mine eyes
therewith? and I will restore it you.
Here I am. Bear witness against me before the LORD and before His
anointed: Whose ox or
donkey have I taken? Whom have I
cheated or
oppressed?
From whose hand have I accepted a
bribe and closed my eyes? Tell me, and I will restore it to you.”
And they said, Thou hast not
defrauded us, nor
oppressed us, neither hast thou taken ought of any man’s hand.
“You have not wronged us or
oppressed us,” they replied, “nor have you taken anything
from the hand of man.”
And they
cried unto the LORD, and said, We have
sinned, because we have
forsaken the LORD, and have served
Baalim and
Ashtaroth: but now deliver us out of the hand of our enemies, and we will serve thee.
Then they
cried out to the LORD and said, ‘We have
sinned, for we have
forsaken the LORD and served the Baals and Ashtoreths. Now deliver us
from the hands of our enemies, that we may serve You.’
And the LORD sent Jerubbaal, and Bedan, and
Jephthah, and Samuel, and delivered you out of the hand of your enemies on every side, and ye dwelled safe.
So the LORD sent Jerubbaal,
Barak,
Jephthah, and Samuel, and He delivered you
from the hands of your enemies on every side, and you dwelt securely.
And Samuel said unto the people, Fear not: ye have done all this wickedness: yet turn not aside from following the LORD, but serve the LORD with all your heart;
“Do not be afraid,” Samuel replied. “Even though you have committed all this evil, do not turn aside from following the LORD, but serve the LORD with all your heart.
Moreover as for me, God
forbid that I should sin against the LORD in ceasing to pray for you: but I will teach you the good and the right way:
As for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the LORD by ceasing to pray for you. And I will continue to teach you the good and right way.
And the Philistines gathered themselves together to fight with Israel, thirty thousand
chariots, and six thousand
horsemen, and people as the sand which is on the sea shore in multitude: and they came up, and pitched in
Michmash, eastward
from Beth-
aven.
Now the Philistines assembled to fight against Israel with three thousand
chariots, six thousand
horsemen, and troops as numerous as the sand on the
seashore. They went up and camped at
Michmash, east of Beth-
aven.
And he
tarried seven days, according to the set time that Samuel had appointed: but Samuel came not to
Gilgal; and the people were scattered
from him.
And Saul waited seven days for the time appointed by Samuel, but Samuel did not come to
Gilgal, and the troops began to desert Saul.
And Samuel said, What hast thou done? And Saul said, Because I saw that the people were scattered
from me, and that thou camest not within the days appointed, and that the Philistines gathered themselves together at
Michmash;
“What have you done?” Samuel asked. And Saul replied, “When I saw that the troops were deserting me, and that you did not come at the appointed time and the Philistines were gathering at
Michmash,
And Samuel arose, and
gat him up
from Gilgal unto Gibeah of Benjamin. And Saul numbered the people that were present with him, about six hundred men.
Then Samuel set out
from Gilgal and went up to Gibeah in Benjamin. And Saul numbered the troops who were with him, about six hundred men.
And
Jonathan said to the young man that bare his armour, Come, and let us go over unto the garrison of these
uncircumcised: it may be that the LORD will work for us: for there is no restraint to the LORD to save by many or by few.
Jonathan said to the young man bearing his
armor, “Come, let us cross over to the outpost of these
uncircumcised men. Perhaps the LORD will work on our behalf. Nothing can hinder the LORD
from saving, whether by many or by few.”
And there was
trembling in the host, in the field, and among all the people: the garrison, and the spoilers, they also
trembled, and the earth
quaked: so it was a very great
trembling.
Then terror struck the Philistines in the camp, in the field, and among all the people. Even those in the outposts and
raiding parties
trembled. Indeed, the earth
quaked and
panic spread
from God.
Then said Saul unto the people that were with him, Number now, and see who is gone
from us. And when they had numbered, behold,
Jonathan and his armourbearer were not there.
Saul said to the troops who were with him, “Call the roll and see who has left us.” And when they had called the roll, they saw that
Jonathan and his
armor-bearer were not there.
Moreover the Hebrews that were with the Philistines before that time, which went up with them into the camp
from the country round about, even they also turned to be with the Israelites that were with Saul and
Jonathan.
And the Hebrews who had previously gone up into the surrounding camps of the Philistines now went over to the Israelites who were with Saul and
Jonathan.
How much more, if
haply the people had eaten freely to day of the
spoil of their enemies which they found? for had there not been now a much greater slaughter among the Philistines?
How much better it would have been if the troops had eaten freely
today from the
plunder they took
from their enemies! Would not the slaughter of the Philistines have been much greater?”
That day, after the Israelites had struck down the Philistines
from Michmash to
Aijalon, the people were very
faint.
Then Saul went up from following the Philistines: and the Philistines went to their own place.
Then Saul gave up his pursuit of the Philistines, and the Philistines returned to their own land.
And he gathered an host, and
smote the
Amalekites, and delivered Israel out of the hands of them that
spoiled them.
He fought
valiantly and defeated the
Amalekites, delivering Israel
from the hands of its plunderers.
Thus saith the LORD of hosts, I remember that which Amalek did to Israel, how he laid wait for him in the way, when he came up from Egypt.
This is what the LORD of Hosts says: ‘I witnessed what the
Amalekites did to the Israelites when they
ambushed them on their way up
from Egypt.
And Saul said unto the
Kenites, Go, depart, get you down
from among the
Amalekites, lest I destroy you with them: for ye shewed kindness to all the children of Israel, when they came up out of Egypt. So the
Kenites departed
from among the
Amalekites.
And he
warned the
Kenites, “Since you showed kindness to all the Israelites when they came up out of Egypt, go on and get away
from the
Amalekites. Otherwise I will
sweep you away with them.” So the
Kenites moved away
from the
Amalekites.
Then Saul struck down the
Amalekites all the way
from Havilah to Shur, which is east of Egypt.
It repenteth me that I have set up Saul to be king: for he is turned back
from following me, and hath not performed my commandments. And it
grieved Samuel; and he
cried unto the LORD all night.
“I
regret that I have made Saul king, for he has turned away
from following Me and has not carried out My instructions.” And Samuel was distressed and
cried out to the LORD all that night.
And Saul said, They have brought them
from the
Amalekites: for the people
spared the best of the sheep and of the oxen, to sacrifice unto the LORD thy God; and the rest we have utterly destroyed.
Saul answered, “The troops brought them
from the
Amalekites; they
spared the best sheep and cattle to sacrifice to the LORD your God, but the rest we devoted to destruction.”
But the people took of the
spoil, sheep and oxen, the chief of the things which should have been utterly destroyed, to sacrifice unto the LORD thy God in
Gilgal.
The troops took sheep and cattle
from the
plunder, the best of the things devoted to destruction, in order to sacrifice them to the LORD your God at
Gilgal.”
For rebellion is as the sin of
witchcraft, and
stubbornness is as iniquity and
idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee
from being king.
For rebellion is like the sin of
divination, and
arrogance is like the wickedness of
idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the LORD, He has rejected you as king.”
And Samuel said unto Saul, I will not return with thee: for thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, and the LORD hath rejected thee from being king over Israel.
“I will not return with you,” Samuel replied. “For you have rejected the word of the LORD, and He has rejected you as king over Israel.”
And Samuel said unto him, The LORD hath rent the kingdom of Israel from thee this day, and hath given it to a neighbour of thine, that is better than thou.
So Samuel said to him, “The LORD has
torn the kingdom of Israel
from you
today and has given it to your
neighbor who is better than you.
And the LORD said unto Samuel, How long
wilt thou
mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him
from reigning over Israel? fill thine horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to
Jesse the
Bethlehemite: for I have provided me a king among his sons.
Now the LORD said to Samuel, “How long are you going to
mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him as king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and go. I am sending you to
Jesse of
Bethlehem, for I have selected
from his sons a king for Myself.”
